Dear Friends & Neighbors, April is here! We have only about 250 days now before the first day of winter. No worries: There’s lots to do. Spring has arrived! And all those spring events we’ve missed for a few years are back, as we can look forward to the Summer of 2022. Bring it all on, even those April Showers. I want to see those May Flowers coming our way soon.

With good things coming, sadly, a good Sponsor is leaving us: Retro Fitness Newtown Square, owned by our friends Luigi and Geno Truono, who are returning to Florida. Two years ago, they came and got involved in our community, happily sponsoring our hometown magazine, with Luigi serving as our Expert Contributor for Personal Training & Fitness. Then COVID -19 came in and took its toll. Luigi and Geno are both healthy but must return to Florida, to manage their other investments. Luigi and Geno, you’ll be missed and remembered by us for your kindness and support of our good health and fitness. This month, many will celebrate Passover, Good Friday and Easter. And some will also honor Earth Day and Arbor Day. (I won’t mention — but keep it in mind — that rather “taxing” April 15th deadline, which is back in April this year.) With Passover beginning April 15th, and Good Friday being April 15th and Easter celebrated April 17th, no doubt many will be taking part in religious observances, particularly in these times of continued COVID-19 caution and global tensions of war. Prayers are needed, and so our team thought Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors readers might appreciate this issue including a directory of our many places of worship in Marple Newtown. I agree. Newtown Square and our greater Marple Newtown community is home to many different faith communities. If you are looking for a church, synagogue or house of worship to visit this month, see our Directory of Marple Newtown Places of Worship on pages 30 – 31. Visit their websites for times of services your friends and neighbors may already attend. We all have much to be thankful for in these times when so many in the world are still at risk from the pandemic and war. I am thankful for my family, our good health, our magazine team, and for all of you, who I know will enjoy this April issue that Sheila and our team bring you this month.

Dear Residents, Fresh air, flowers and meteor showers? That’s right! Keep your eyes to the skies the evening of April 22nd to catch the Lyrid meteor shower. Located close to the bright star of Vega, Lyrids are known for surges that can bring rates of up to 100 meteors per hour! This month, we are busy as bees as we gather to celebrate Easter, Passover and Earth Day. Be sure to check out the Calendar of Events on page 34 for lots of family activities. Our Resident Feature is the O’Donnell Family, who set their sights on Newtown Square and worked hard to build a beautiful life here. We also feature AmeriHealth Caritas as a Sponsor and community partner. Baseball is back at NELL, and the Challenger Division is ready to take the field. Finally, we introduce you to a hidden Marple Newtown gem located in the heart of Broomall located in a place you’d least expect. We’re looking for more Newtown Square families, individuals and nonprofit organizations to feature in our magazine. To nominate someone, please email me at STurnerHilliard@BestVersionMedia.com.

Resident Feature
The O’Donnell Family Happiness Is Homegrown by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos by Katie Borsuk Photography www.KatieBorsuk.com
We would like to thank
for sponsoring this month’s Resident Feature. Over the years, we have had the pleasure of featuring families with a wide variety of backgrounds. Some of their stories began in foreign countries while others started with a chance encounter through mutual friends. But not for Scott and Regina O’Donnell and their children, Logan and Deirdre. Their story is all about family, friends and finding love right here in Delaware County. Scott and Regina grew up not too far from each other: Scott in Upper Darby, where he lived with his parents and two brothers, and Regina in Glenolden. Scott went to Highland Park Elementary School, Beverly Hills Middle School and Upper Darby High School, where he ran track, cross country and played lacrosse. After graduation, he completed two International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) apprenticeships and began his career as an Electrician. Scott continued his education by traveling around the country for specific job training in High Voltage Electricity, Vapor Combustion, Thermography/ Infrared Technology, and Ultrasonic Leak Testing. He also attended night school at Delaware Technical Community College for Process Control and Instrumentation. Scott is an Electrician 6

by trade but currently works for Johnson & Johnson as a Metrologist, specializing in measurement and test equipment and their associated uses and capabilities as it relates to manufacturing and engineering. Regina grew up in Glenolden with her parents, her sister and her brother. She said that she loved growing up surrounded by plenty of extended family. Her grandparents lived in the twin home next door, and her cousins were just a few doors away. She went to St. George Parish Elementary School in Glenolden, then Archbishop Prendergast High School, where she was involved with the chorus, school plays and pretty much anything involving music. Regina then earned her Associate degree from Delaware County Community College, after which she transferred to Neumann University, where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Business. Regina said she first noticed Scott because he lived next door to her best friend. “While I wasn’t sitting at home waiting for him to realize I was interested, he eventually caught on,” she said, laughing. They started dating and ironically shared their first kiss at a friend’s home right around the corner from where they live now. “Looking back now April 2022
at that first kiss, we think that Newtown Square was where we were meant to be.” After a few years of dating, Scott and Regina knew that marriage was in their future. Around that time, Regina’s grandfather passed away. He had lived next door to Regina’s parents. “My parents asked Scott if he would like to rent the house and help fix it up for sale,” Regina said. “Scott moved in in April 2000 and proposed to me later that month.” Instead of renting, Regina and Scott decided to buy her grandfather’s house and started to plan their wedding. Scott and Regina were married in September 2001, at St. George Parish Catholic Church, and had their reception at The Drexelbrook. “We got married just weeks after 9/11, so honestly it was a very scary time,” she said. “It was a strange feeling to be so happy during such uncertainty.” They honeymooned on the island of Aruba and then returned home to begin their married life together. Life was moving along nicely in Glenolden surrounded by their family and friends. They welcomed their son Logan in 2004, and then their daughter Deirdre just happened to be born on Regina’s birthday in 2007. Scott was busy working as
an Electrician, and Regina began teaching preschool during the day and waited tables a few nights a week so she could be home after school for the kids. They were both very involved in the kids’ school and extracurricular activities. Regina served as Vice President of the home and school association for three years, and Scott coached youth soccer and baseball. After a few years, Regina and Scott decided that although they loved where they lived, they wanted to move to an area that would give them space to grow, in a single-family home with a nice backyard and schools that would provide their kids more of an opportunity to explore and excel. After doing a lot of research and looking around, they set their sights on Newtown Square and the Marple Newtown School District. “I had a friend who lived in Newtown Square, and he would send me listings all the time,” Scott said. “We knew it would be a stretch financially, but we were determined to make it work.” They hired a seasoned (and patient) real estate
Logan and Deirdre O’Donnell
agent who helped them find a home that checked all their boxes. Regina and Scott knew that moving their kids to a new area and a new school would be tough, but they say it proved to be the best decision they have ever made. They do admit though, that the move might have been made a little sweeter with the promise of someday getting a puppy! The O’Donnells settled on their home in 2015, and enrolled the kids at Culbertson Elementary. Logan was in 5th grade and
Deirdre in 3rd. Regina and Scott both said that they were blown away by how they were welcomed right away by their neighbors and the school community. Deirdre made new friends in the schoolyard, and Logan connected with a few new teammates on the soccer field. Regina and Scott jumped right in doing what they do best: volunteering in the community. Regina stepped up to offer her help with the Culbertson PTO, Continued on page 8

active in the Girls Scouts and recently wrapped up their 10th year of successful cookie sales. Now that the kids are older and more independent, they require less time from their parents and want more time with their friends. Regina has scaled back her time volunteering at the school and has turned her focus toward her career. “A good friend of mine suggested I apply for a position with the legal department of a property management group in Conshohocken,” Regina said. “Although I didn’t have the legal experience, I was extremely interested in learning, and I got the job.” Regina works on the commercial real estate side and truly loves what she does. And, as promised, the O’Donnells eventually made good on that bribe (disguised as a promise) to get a puppy. Well, they actually ended up with two
puppies, thanks to Scott. Their Boxer, Joy, was the first to join the family. Being a young pup, Joy needed lots of new puppy vaccinations, which meant lots of visits to the local veterinarian’s office. It just so happened that as Scott was bringing Joy in to be seen, their veterinarian was fostering a Bulldog named Abby who was about to have nine puppies. The vet’s plan was to care for Abby as she gave birth, then offer the puppies for adoption to local families. “This is where Scott got the bright idea to submit an application,” Regina laughed. “And we are so glad he did because we couldn’t imagine life without Bessie our Bulldog.” Regina and Scott feel very blessed to live here in Newtown Square. They had a dream to raise their children in a safe and welcoming community with endless educational opportunities, and
they worked hard to achieve it. “We absolutely love where we live!” said Scott. Regina added that she not only has made some incredible friends here, she also loves being surrounded by nature. “We didn’t see much wildlife in Glenolden,” she said. “Now we have the pleasure of looking out our windows every day to see deer, foxes and beautiful birds in the yard.”

Student of the Month by Lisa Jeffries
AJ MAROZZI
APRIL STUDENT OF THE MONTH AJ Marozzi, April Student of the Month Photo courtesy of Kim Marozzi
The April Student of the Month is Anthony (“AJ”) Marozzi, a Senior at Cardinal O’Hara High School (COHS). AJ received a Certificate of Achievement to recognize how he demonstrates Excellence in Service to many communities. Along with his academic classes at COHS, AJ attends the Delaware County Vocational Technical School for Building Trades. AJ hopes to continue his education in construction, although he’s not sure whether it will be in plumbing, HVAC or a different construction specialty that he would like to continue to learn about and apprentice in after graduation. As one of the most ardent COHS Sports enthusiasts, AJ tries to attend every home game — no matter the sport — and even some away games, to cheer on and encourage his fellow students. That is one thing that AJ makes a point of in EVERYTHING he does: He’s always there for his friends, family, fellow students and also those with special needs, no matter what. AJ had a difficult childhood, requiring a bone marrow transplant (from his brother), and many weeks and months spent in Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. During AJ's battle, he kept his positive outlook, sense
of humor and the determination to “stay strong.” That’s why his friends nicknamed him “Mighty Marozzi.” At times during AJ’s severe childhood illness, his parents weren’t sure if his battle would end happily. Once AJ was a bit healthier, he was granted a wish from the Make-A-Wish Foundation: a trip to swim with the dolphins in the Bahamas. Since then, AJ and his family have been involved with the foundation, to give back and help with fundraising. In 2021, the 5th Annual Wish with Marozzi fundraiser was held. AJ is an exceptional young man who spreads joy to everyone he meets. He also volunteers with the COHS Community Service Corps, Danny Hammond Dance Marathon (DHDM) and various DHDM charity events. AJ feels it’s very important that he gives back because he knows he has been given so much to be thankful for. AJ, your Marple Newtown Friends & Neighbors congratulate you on this award and for turning your childhood health struggles into something wonderful and beneficial to others. We wish you well in the years to come and in all your future endeavors! NS

Modern Hi-Tech Methods vs. Proven Troubleshooting Methods and Expertise
by David Linn Cook Weatherproofing Plus, Inc.
Most weatherization projects are like a good mystery book. If the rain gutters fail, the foundation grading is poor or the basement windows and/or walls are leaking, there will be poor air quality in certain areas of the home. The answer to the mystery isn’t always “the usual suspects” — French drains, stucco walls and ineffective dehumidifiers. The roofing, siding, windows, insulation, venting, water seepage and heat loss must be evaluated for possible inefficiencies.
Things are not always as they seem. Imagine a new custom-built home with all the amenities. The home looked exceptional, but the cold draft that ran down the steps from the second floor and throughout the home was preventing the homeowners from living comfortably in their beautiful new home. To identify the source of the draft, the contractor used an infrared camera to do a full thermal imaging of the home. That scan showed no draft source, so the home underwent a second full thermal imaging scan by a PA state agency’s thermal imaging crew. They also used their Blower Door airflow testing equipment, but came up with no clear answer for the draft. And both thermal scans showed complete insulation “enveloping” at the perimeter. The homeowner then called a weatherproofing estimator, to ask what additional diagnostic tools were available beyond what had already been done. The homeowner said that after two years and several deeper examinations, the contractor and the state agency’s crew had come to the conclusion that there was no heat loss at the expected spots in the walls, windows or ceilings.
The weatherproofing estimator’s many years of experience with homes of every shape and size helped him identify that the source of the draft was in the “bonus room” above the garage. That room, which was next to the top of the stairs on the second floor, had a barn/Dutch-style roof line and a doublewalled framed design, which meant that insulation could be omitted. When the lower part of the bonus room’s walls were cut open, there was NO insulation, but the storage space behind the walls had blocked the heat loss from showing on both infrared imaging scans. That same weatherproofing estimator discovered what was causing water marks on the walls of another homeowner’s dining room, which had been a first-floor addition 10 years prior. The cause of the water marks had originally been misdiagnosed by an Energy Audit crew, at considerable expense to the homeowner. Although there was some insulation, the exterior soffit vents near the sliding door from the dining room to a patio created a cold corner in the room. The problem turned out to be the fact that there was no kitchen exhaust fan. This was discovered not by using thermal or other hi-tech diagnostic equipment but through the simple and proven troubleshooting methods of a weatherproofing estimator with many years of experience. The evening also included a unanimous vote to elevate Leonard Altieri to Chair of the Newtown Township Board of Supervisors, with Supervisor Tina Roberts-Lightcap serving as Board Vice-Chair. Supervisor Kathy Chandless explained how the decision was simple. “Leonard has assumed a leadership role from the start of his tenure on the Board, pioneering much-needed efforts to increase transparency and community engagement, and so he was a natural choice to be elevated to Board Chair,” she said. Leonard is excited to undertake his new role as Chair of the Board of Supervisors. “I am a lifelong Newtown Square resident. I attended St. Anastasia and Marple Newtown High School,” he said, “and I am honored to now be in a position to do all I can to give back and to improve the community I love.” Leonard has previously served on the Marple Newtown School Board, the Newtown Township Planning Commission, and was the Chairman of the School Board Curriculum, Instruction and Technology Committee.
Township Supervisors Altieri, Roberts-Lightcap and Russo at Newtown Square’s first annual Circle at Sundown event
have publicly available township email addresses that are posted on the township website. They have also secured essential grant money to explore the expansion of our walking trail system; assembled a team to address speed and traffic control solutions; as well as implemented an engineer-based plan committed to addressing portions of our township plagued with outdated stormwater systems. As Board Chairman, Leonard has also launched a Community Outreach Tour in an effort to open the lines of communication between our local business owners, school officials and religious institutions. While it seems the list of tasks is daunting, the Board of Supervisors is committed to working hard to keep our community thriving. They welcome the opportunity to work together with the residents of Newtown Township, and encourage ideas, suggestions, feedback and of course, volunteers. Passing of the historical preservation ordinance. (L to R): Mike Russo, Tina Roberts-Lightcap, Cathy Cavalier, President of the Newtown Square Historical Society, Leonard Altieri and Ed Partridge
Since January, the Board of Supervisors has been working diligently to connect with community leaders, pass important ordinances and focus on open lines of communication with residents. The Board is particularly proud of their work on successfully passing the Historic Preservation Ordinance in February. This ordinance was first attempted over 20 years ago but did not pass. Leonard explained that for the past two years, he and his fellow Supervisors worked with the Newtown Square Historical Society, which was instrumental in getting it passed. The ordinance affords protections to our historic structures, establishes a Historic Commission comprised of residents, and creates a foundation in this Township for additional protections. Opening the lines of communication between Newtown Township residents and our elected officials is top priority for our Board of Supervisors. They recently passed a resolution codifying the ability for greater public participation/comment for all township Boards and Commissions including the Board of Supervisors. There is now a dedicated public comment email address that is monitored, recorded and presented at the proper Board or Commission meeting. Public comments are welcomed and included on meeting agendas, and all township public meetings are live-streamed and recorded for future viewing. Additionally, most of the Board of Supervisors now

Bringing People Together Here and Across North America I often write about our advertising Sponsors. They value Newtown Square and its residents for being important to the success of their business. That is why it’s important that we reward our Sponsors for their loyalty to us with our loyalty to them, by choosing to do business with them first whenever possible. The advertising Sponsors you see on our pages have become very recognizable to us for Bringing People Together because they fund the costs of each new issue of our magazine, which brings our community together through features about our hometown residents, places and organizations. We have our Sponsors to thank. Sure, they’re advertisers looking for new business, but there’s more. Our advertising Sponsors want to contribute to our community, and not only by operating
a business in our hometown. The advertisers you see in our monthly magazine are choosing to put back into the communities that contribute to their success. And they’re not alone. More than a thousand communities are served by a monthly hometown magazine like ours, all published by Best Version Media. And so, this month, I thought it best to have my colleague from BVM, Mitch Writt, share with us how Best Version Media has been Bringing People Together for 15 years now in so many communities like ours. The Norman Rockwell Museum: A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Broomall at DANJOLELL Memorial Homes by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos courtesy of DANJOLELL Memorial Home Robert D'Anjolell, Sr., with a fraction of his collection
One of the most recognizable buildings along West Chester Pike in Broomall is the DANJOLELL Memorial Home. But did you know that the iconic octagonal building is also home to the largest private collection of Norman Rockwell memorabilia in the United States?
Every room on the lower level is a tribute to Norman Rockwell
The Norman Rockwell Museum on the lower level was established by Robert L. D’Anjolell, Sr. Many years ago, Bob began collecting Norman Rockwell memorabilia – everything from plates and drawings to figurines and bound copies of The Saturday Evening Post, which made Rockwell famous.
Today, the entire lower level of the funeral home serves not only as a tribute to Rockwell and his art, but also as a welcome distraction for grieving families. When a family loses a loved one and needs to make funeral arrangements, the family and a funeral director use a private room on the comforting lower level to discuss private matters such as viewing and funeral arrangements and choosing a casket or an urn as a final resting place. They also have rooms for families to relax and a children’s area to keep the kids occupied. As visitors walk down the center staircase, they cannot help but see the amazing display of Norman Rockwell pieces in the foyer area. But that is just the beginning. Every room on this spacious level is filled with Rockwell’s work. There is even a large vestibule area named The Rockwell Museum, with hundreds of plates on display in lighted glass cabinets. Robert, Sr., has long been a fan of Norman Rockwell’s art, his work ethic and his iconic depictions of Americana. Rockwell was fiercely determined to become a successful artist and, at the age of 14, enrolled in art classes. By age 16, he had left high school to study under influential artists, Thomas Fogarty and George Bridgman, and shortly thereafter, was named the Art Director of Boys’ Life, the official publication of the Boy Scouts of America. 16

By the time Rockwell was 22 years old, he painted his first cover for The Saturday Evening Post. Over the next 47 years, Norman Rockwell painted over 300 of the magazine’s covers. His most famous covers include “Freedom From Want,” the third of the “Four Freedoms” series that became a symbol of family togetherness, peace, and plenty; “Rosie the Riveter,” which served as a tribute to the strength and contributions of women during World War II; and “The Problem We All Live With,” which addressed the Civil Rights Movement and the beginning of desegregation in our schools.

In 1969, Rockwell placed his works in the custodianship of the Old Corner House Stockbridge Historical Society, later to become Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. The museum is home to 998 original paintings and drawings as well as Rockwell’s art materials, his library, furnishings and personal items.

Norman Rockwell was a true entrepreneur from humble means, which is one of the reasons why Robert D’Anjolell, Sr., is an avid collector of Rockwell’s artwork. Robert, Sr., also came from a modest background, and at an early age, saved his money and opened his first funeral home in 1963, in Philadelphia’s Overbrook section Since Norman Rockwell’s then, he has worked hard “Triple Self Portrait”, 1960 to achieve his dreams and now owns and manages six funeral homes in Delaware and Chester Counties. Bob is proud of his accomplishments and proud to own such an extensive collection of Norman Rockwell memorabilia. Robert, Sr., his family and his staff welcome you to visit The Rockwell Museum, which is open to the public. He asks that you kindly call ahead of time to arrange a visit that is mutually convenient. History Spotlight
The 1950s Cold War Came to Delco by Doug Humes World War II ended in August 1945, but the “Cold War” essentially began at the same time. The struggle between democratic capitalism and authoritarian communism lasted for most of the 20th century. The possibility of an exchange of nuclear weapons was very real in the 1950s, and so Civil Defense became the watchword. To protect likely military and civilian targets, we installed missile bases surrounding our cities. Philadelphia, then the 3rd-largest city in the country, was one of the protected cities, with a dozen Nike missile bases ringing the city, including Site PH-75 right off of West Chester Pike in Edgmont. The Edgmont base was completed in 1955. Each site had three parts: a radar system to detect incoming aircraft and direct the outgoing missiles; with 1–3 underground “magazines,” each with four launchers; and an area for personnel, headquarters, barracks, mess, recreation hall and motor pool. The

base was staffed by 109 soldiers, initially Regular Army but later PA National Guard units. The initial missile was a Nike (Greek Goddess of Victory) Ajax, with a 25-mile range that could be fired at incoming bombers. At least one launcher was on constant alert.

Over the next few years, as missiles improved in range and power, the new generation – Hercules – were installed in area sites. While the Ajax was a conventional warhead, the Hercules missiles were nuclear.
Abandoned storage shed at Nike base in Edgmont 2012 Steven Strommer
Having a missile site in your neighborhood was a two-edged sword. While it may have given some sense of protection, it had its own risks. In May, 1958, eight fully armed missiles blew up “in a furious mushroom of fire and death,” at a Nike base in Middletown, NJ, killing 10 men. Those missiles were not the nuclear missiles, or the results could have been much worse. While anti-war sentiment grew in the 1960s, it came earlier to Edgmont in 1958, when a group of 50 young activists held a silent vigil for peace at the entrance to the base. That peace vigil lasted several days.
Intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) spelled the end to the Nike bases. The new missiles traveled too quickly to be intercepted by the Nikes, which were designed for slower-flying bombers. The Nike bases were all closed down, including Edgmont in September 1968. The site continues to be used as a U.S. Army Reserve Center. Cold War traces remain there, as well as in the Don Guanella woods, which once hosted an anti-aircraft battery. Large Enough to Serve, Small Enough to Care Spring has finally sprung, and for many homeowners, that means your trees will be in need of some attention and care. Whether you need tree removal, pruning and shaping or other tree-related services, our local Tree Care and Inspection Expert Mike Bradley, Owner of Bradley Tree Experts, is an experienced tree arborist with all the equipment necessary to accommodate any job from large to small. Mike grew up in Upper Darby and was the oldest of his five siblings. He started climbing trees when he was just 11 years old and hasn’t stopped since. Mike’s tree-climbing skills as a kid caught the attenMike Bradley with his granddaughter Adrienne
tion of his neighbor, who happened to be a tree surgeon. He recruited Mike to help with his own tree business, and passed down his knowledge and expertise. “Not only did I realize that I was good at tree climbing and working on trees, but I found it very rewarding,” Mike said. “Since the day my neighbor asked me to help, I’ve never looked back!” While Mike attended Upper Darby High School, he continued working with his neighbor, and in the summers, he started his own landscaping business, overseeing 60 properties. “I was definitely a hustler!” Mike said proudly. After high school, he took classes in accounting at Delaware County Community College while working for E&J Tree Experts, where Mike considered the head tree surgeon, Howard Foulk, a mentor. During the early 1980s, Mike was looking to start his own business and found a great place to set up shop in Broomall. With just a single pickup truck, Mike started what was first known as Brad’s Incredible Tree Experts. Back then, Mike was known

as “Brad,” and he was able to build a strong customer base just by word of mouth. He had recently married his wife Kathleen, and she handled the business side of things while Mike was out on jobs. Kathleen and Mike raised their two daughters here in Broomall, both of whom graduated from Cardinal O’Hara High School. Their oldest daughter Elana is now a Certified Arborist and the Office Manager for Bradley Tree Experts. And their daughter Melissa is a Respiratory Therapist at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. With Elana now serving in the role her mother once had, Mike said Kathleen now considers herself the retired President of the company and happily helps take care of her three-year-old granddaughter, Adrienne. For years, Mike’s younger brother Bernie also worked alongside him. Sadly, Bernie passed away last year. But now, lucky for Mike, Bernie’s son Jonathan, who grew up in the business and eventually became a Certified Arborist, is working for Bradley Tree Experts. Longtime customers appreciate the personal touch they get with a small, family owned business. “They know that when they call, they'll get to talk to Elana,” he said. “And when they hire us for tree work, they know I’ll be the one coming out to the property to talk to them about the project.” Another perk to having his daughter work with him? “She keeps me in line,” he said jokingly. “Because of Elana, I always know where to be and to be there on time!” Bradley Tree Experts offers many services including but not limited to tree removal, pruning and shaping, cabling and bracing, stump and brush removal, lightning protection and fertilization. Since they started, Mike has also added two new divisions: Bradley Firewood and The Firewood Queen. Firewood, primarily made up of mixed hardwoods, is sold all year long in ¼, ½ and full cords and is available for delivery. Mike loves his work and says he’s typically working from sunrise to sundown. Occasionally when he gets some down time, he can be found out on his fishing boat. In the summer he’s off to fish in Rock Hall, MD. Then come fall, he takes the boat out in Avalon, to catch striped bass. “I love the outdoors,” said Mike. “When I’m not working, I’m doing something outside like riding a motorcycle or spending time in the mountains.” For the past 30 years, Mike’s hard work, quick response, reasonable rates and expertise in tree care have earned Bradley Tree Experts the respect of customers in the Marple Newtown area. “The best part of my job is having satisfied customers,” Ask about OUR NEW Cleaning & Surface Protection!

said Mike. “It’s especially rewarding if I worked on a declining tree and when I go back to the property two years later, I see that that tree is now thriving.” Maintaining your trees is, of course, a year-round job, but taking big steps to ensure their health in the early spring will set them up for a great year! If you have the need to hire a tree expert, getting the right person or company can make a huge difference in the appearance of your home. Bradley Tree Experts is fully licensed and insured and serves Delaware County, Chester County, the Main Line and Philadelphia. What You Need to Know About Water Heaters
In a true example of planned obsolescence, did you know that standard tank-style electric or gas water heaters start to leak and fail within 8 – 12 years? That makes water heater replacements one of the most common home improvement projects. Although there may be warning signs when they are starting to fail, the most important factor to consider is the age of the heater, because in most cases, the tank will fail without any warning signs. One of the most important things to consider is what areas would be affected if your water heater started leaking? If it’s located in an unfinished basement near a sump pump, that would be considered a lower degree of risk if the tank failed. If the heater tank is in a finished basement or a part of the home where a water leak could mean extensive damage, it’s best to replace it based on age. Also, if the water runs lukewarm or cold, or if you see rust and corrosion on the tank or piping, consider replacement. Leak detection devices have become more and more popular, and now you have the option to have the water heater set in a pan that automatically shuts off the water to the unit if water is detected in the pan. When water gets heated, it expands. There’s often nowhere for the expansion to go, so it builds up pressure in the plumbing system, and can cause the temperature and pressure relief valve to drip or blow off. This causes unnecessary stress to the water heater and the entire plumbing system. So, part of the current plumbing code requires that new water heater installations include a thermal expansion tank.
• Any & All Plumbing Repairs • High Efficiency Boilers • Backflow Protection (Installation & Testing) • Sewer/Drain Cleaning & Repairs
When purchasing a new hot water heater, it’s important to look at how your current hot water needs may have changed. For instance, if more or fewer people live in the home, the tank size that you need may have changed. Water heaters come in a few different sizes so consider your usage requirements before simply replacing the water heater with the same size that was there. Efficiency is paramount when you consider that about 25% of the energy in your home goes toward heating your water. Tankless water heaters are one of the more efficient options available. They can last 15 to 20 years. They also save on space. They do require annual service and flushing, but being vigilant about the upkeep will increase the life expectancy of the unit. Contact a professional if you have questions or are ready to make a change. NS

Rounding Out Your Physical Routine with Dance With spring around the corner, there is so much to look forward to! The days start to get longer, giving you lots of extra time for physical activities. As soon as the weather starts getting warmer, some may feel more inclined to get active and amp up their physical exercise. Let’s face it: It can be tough to find the motivation to stick with a well-rounded physical routine when it’s cold and snowy outside. While winter provides us with the important opportunity to rest and restore, the sunshine that comes with spring can help motivate us to stay on top of our physical health. According to the Mayo Clinic, there are five elements to a well-rounded physical routine: aerobic fitness, strength training, core exercises, balance training and stretching. Dancing can encompass all five of these elements, which is why it is a great activity to round out your routine and help you achieve optimal physical health. Dance offers numerous physical and mental health benefits, and there is sure to be a style of dance that suits you best. Some popular dance styles include ballet, hip-hop and jazz. Ballet makes for the perfect blend of strength, balance and flexibility training. It is an important foundation for any other style of dance or physical activity, and it can even help with injury prevention by strengthening and lengthening the muscles. Hip-hop is another popular urban dance style whose popping, locking, breaking and freestyling moves can provide a fun and expressive way to increase cardiovascular health and build endurance. Jazz is a high-energy style of dance, sure to get your blood flowing and your heart rate up. Kick, leap and turn to the beat of the music! While there are many more styles of dance to check out, each style covers one or multiple elements of a well-rounded physical routine.
Hopefully this information gives you the motivation to get moving this spring. So what are you waiting for? With all of the benefits dance can offer, add it to your routine this spring. Get outside, get active and get dancing! NS

resource hub. Plans are underway to offer free exercise and art classes as well as weekly food distribution to those in need. In addition to providing healthcare solutions, AmeriHealth Caritas is proud to be a mission-driven organization dedicated to making a difference in the communities they serve. Their slogan, Care is the heart of our work®, also serves as a call to action for their associates who participate in the AmeriHealth Caritas Care Crewsm program. It’s an internal volunteer program that offers year-round opportunities for employees to donate their time and energy to various causes. Nationally, AmeriHealth Caritas partners with the United Way fundraising campaign, and locally they volunteer and fundraise for worthy causes as well as offer community health education and outreach programs. The folks at AmeriHealth Caritas are always looking for new ways to collaborate with local organizations to help build healthy communities. AmeriHealth Caritas, located at 3811 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, provides full-risk Medicaid managed care in 12 states and Washington, D.C., where it serves about 5 million using Medicaid, Medicare and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). For more information, visit their website: www.AmeriHealthCaritas.com. AmeriHealth Caritas is proud to move to Newtown Square and become a Premium Sponsor of Newtown Square Residents as our Inside Back Cover Sponsor of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine (see page 39). Sharing Special Holiday Recipes: Celebrating Easter and Passover By Sheila Turner-Hilliard Each year, followers of Christian faiths close out Lent by attending church services and gathering with friends and family for spring-inspired celebrations. There are many classic Easter traditions you can incorporate this year as you celebrate this April 17th. Some traditions like visiting the Easter bunny or attending an egg hunt may already be a part of your holiday plans, but perhaps this
is the year you’d like to try a new tradition or even a new recipe. Aside from the traditional Easter dinner of ham, rack of lamb, scalloped potatoes and asparagus, why not try your hand at homemade carrot cake? It’s an easy-to-prepare, delicious crowd-pleasing dessert topped with your very own cream cheese frosting!
Carrot Cake Cake Ingredients
• Unsalted butter for the pan • 2½ cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for the pan • 12 oz grated carrots (approx. 6 med. carrots) • 1 tsp baking powder • 1 tsp baking soda • ¼ tsp ground allspice
Cream Cheese Frosting Ingredients • • • • •
¼ tsp ground cinnamon ¼ tsp ground nutmeg ½ tsp salt 1¼ cups sugar ¼ cup firmly packed dark brown sugar • 3 large eggs • 6 oz plain yogurt • 6 oz vegetable oil

Bringing Spring Into Focus!

Many neighbors in our community are also getting ready to celebrate Passover, which begins on April 15th and ends on April 23rd this year. Also known as Pesach, it commemorates the liberation of the Hebrew slaves from Egypt. On the first two nights of Passover, a special family meal called the seder is held. During Passover, no leavened food (called chametz) is eaten, and on the first two and last two days of Passover, no work is permitted, as these four days are considered sacred. At the seder, foods of symbolic significance are served, and prayers
and traditional recitations are performed. Just because leavened food is not permitted during Passover, doesn’t mean that we can’t enjoy some cake — a flourless cake, that is! The recipe below is for the most delicious flourless chocolate cake topped with fresh berries. It’s easy to make and is sure to satisfy your sweet tooth! Wishing all of our Friends & Neighbors a happy Easter and Passover filled with love, family and LOTS of good food! N S

Ingredients
Directions Preheat oven to 350º.
• 4 oz unsalted butter, cut into pieces • 10 oz semisweet chocolate chips
Grease a 9-inch round cake pan. Line the bottom with parchment paper and dust with a pinch of cocoa powder.
• 4 eggs, separated, plus one egg yolk
Melt the butter and chocolate chips in a double broiler. Remove from heat and let cool.
• • • • •
½ cup cocoa powder, plus more for dusting the pan ½ tsp salt ½ tsp cinnamon ¼ tsp cayenne pepper ¾ cup sugar
Once cooled, transfer the chocolate and butter mixture to a large mixing bowl. Mix the egg yolks, cocoa powder, salt, cinnamon and cayenne pepper into the chocolate mixture. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites with a mixer until foamy. Slowly add the sugar and continue to beat until the egg whites form stiff peaks. Add ¼ of the egg whites to the bowl with the chocolate mixture and stir to combine, then add the remaining egg whites to the bowl and gently fold them into the batter. Pour the batter into the pan and smooth the top. Bake for 30 – 35 mins until center is set. Cool on a wire rack. Allow cake to cool completely before removing it from the pan. Top with whipped cream and fresh berries. Serves 8.

Enjoy the Beauty and Ease of a Gas Fire Pit It’s that time of year when warmer weather makes us want to spend as much time as possible outside. What a great time to bring the indoors out, and think about adding a gas fire pit to your outdoor space! These days you’ll find outdoor fire pits in many yards, but some municipalities have ordinances against burning wood fires outside. The perfect solution is to add a stylish, gas fire pit that offers beauty, ease of use and warmth (but only when you want heat), and becomes the focal point of the back yard! Some Things You May Not Know About Gas Fire Pits Gas burns cleaner than wood, which makes it easier on everyone’s lungs. You won’t have those clouds of smoke choking you or your neighbors, and there’s no waiting for the embers to burn down before you can leave the area or go inside. Plus, there won’t be any unsafe flying embers or unpredictable flames that can make a wood fire a disaster waiting to happen. Automatic ignition makes starting and stopping your gas fire pit a breeze. Whether your unit is natural gas or propane, there’s no unpleasant smell.
by Scott Magness Scott’s Fireplace Products
You can safely place your gas fire pit just about anywhere, including under an overhang or canopy or even in a gazebo. You get more value for your hard-earned money because you can enjoy your gas fire pit more often, even for brief periods of time, because there’s no wood to burn down. Multiple uses, you have the flexibility to convert your gas fire pit into a standard table. It’s a great way to enjoy that extra surface where you can eat a meal or play card games. Then you can switch it back to a gas fire pit with the snap of a finger. A gas fire pit in your yard creates an oasis that everyone can enjoy, even older children because they’re that safe. You can find gas fire pits in literally any shape, style or size you can imagine, so it’s one of the fastest ways to add ambiance to your yard or any outdoor area. For a uniquely beautiful custom look, you can place glass beads inside the burner, like they show on all the home makeover shows. And you can even alternate the styles and colors of the beads, depending on what look you want to achieve. NS
Value, at the end of the day, is what bridges the gap between low price desires and the premium products we offer at Scott’s Fireplace Products.

Springtime Is Car Time! Some people think of springtime as the time of year to change things up. Whether it’s a thorough cleaning, a color change or time to replace older items in our lives, spring is a perfect opportunity for a fresh start. Spring also signifies the start to a new driving season. It’s the perfect time to have your vehicle detailed to wash away the nasty remnants of a long winter, or to service or replace that vehicle. Below are things to consider while making the decision on what to do with your current vehicle, especially in the current economy. If you are keeping your current vehicle, regardless of its age, plan to have the maintenance performed according to the mileage as per the manufacturer’s recommendations. Have a complete detail performed inside and out, including the undercarriage, to remove road salt. If any body work is needed, be sure to contact your collision service provider as soon as possible. Some automotive parts are still hard to source and may need extra time to receive. And due to the shortage of new vehicles, auto repair shops are very busy servicing older vehicles, so do not wait to schedule any services that are needed. If you are in the market for a new car or truck, be careful and do your homework. The costs of used vehicles are at an alltime high, and new vehicle inventory is at an all-time low. If you are looking for a pre-owned vehicle, be sure to have it checked
out by your auto service provider. The main concerns for used vehicles are rust, fluid leaks and a comprehensive computer scan for faults or a recent code erasure. If you plan on buying a new car or truck, start looking ASAP! It’s almost unbelievable how low the current inventory is at some auto dealerships, and some are limiting new orders due to raw material shortages. Unless you are driving a fully electric car, be diligent in having the engine oil checked regularly, especially in newer vehicles. The new high-tech engines require very thin oil, which causes a very high oil consumption rate. The oil light on most vehicles measures oil pressure and may not come on even with a low oil condition, while others have oil level sensors and will alert the driver to low oil conditions. Consult your owner’s manual to see which type you have. No matter what vehicle you drive this season, as always, check your tire pressure, keep your fluids filled and follow all safety precautions. Have a happy and safe spring, Neighbors!

Surviving the Legal Shuffle Going through legal issues in or out of court can be emotionally and mentally draining, not to mention stressful. Here are a few things you can do on your end to get through the stress and anxiety you may feel as a result of these issues. 1. When you have an appointment with your attorney or are going to court, eat lightly. A cup of coffee with a bowl of oatmeal or cereal, strawberries or blueberries for breakfast and a salad for lunch is just enough. This helps with keeping alert and clear minded. 2. Family therapy and/or individual counseling is a great avenue to pursue. The importance of therapy/counseling is learning the tools to use to deal with stress. Sometimes the therapist/ counselor suggests different ways to eliminate or deal with stress that you may not have thought about. One of the best resources to find a professional to help you deal with stress is through BuildingBridgesMedia.com located in Media. This organization offers a host of psychologists who can help with most if not all of your needs to survive the legal shuffle.
3. At least five days before an appointment with your attorney, prepare a list of questions you might have and then bring it to the meeting. As your appointment progresses you will probably hear answers to many of your questions. Toward the latter part of your meeting, ask for time to check your list for any questions that might not have been answered yet. 4. Massage therapy, chiropractic care and/or a reflexologist are also good avenues to pursue to handle the stress as a result of legal issues. Look up each of these disciplines to see what they are about, how they can help you and if you have these options in your area. Ask your primary care physician about these options as well, and ask for their opinion regarding what would best suit you. The bottom line is that it is very important to take care of yourself and your health in order to survive the stressors of legal issues. So be sure to carve out some time in your schedule for you. NS

NELL’s Challenger Division Takes the Field by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos courtesy of Matt Catania Oh, how the sweet sounds of spring fill the air! Birds are chirping, kids are playing and bats are cracking over at Newtown Edgmont Little League (NELL). Baseball season is officially here! NELL has always been known as a special place in our community where kids of all playing abilities learn to develop their love of the game. But did you know that NELL is also home to our area’s longest-running special needs baseball program called the Challenger Division? NELL’s Challenger Division has been in existence for over 30 years now. The program was introduced to NELL by life-long Newtown Square resident Joe Catania, whose two special-needs sons, Jimmy and Luke, were inaugural players. Joe, along with his wife Maureen, have been growing the program ever since, and now Jimmy and Luke’s brother Matt, who grew up watching his brothers play Challenger baseball, is not only a coach and steady pitcher, but he also sits on NELL’s Board, representing the Challenger Division. Matt said that the Division’s goal is to give kids with physical and intellectual challenges the opportunity to play ball with their peers. “Our players enjoy being part of a team and playing a game that is structured to meet their specific needs,” he explained. Luke said his teammates help him be a better player. “When we practice together, we learn from each other.”

The Challenger Division welcomes players ages 4–21 and is inclusive of all physical and intellectual challenges. Players and their families participate in NELL’s Opening Day Parade and fundraising events, and their baseball season follows NELL’s regular-season schedule. Games are every Sunday at 12pm and spectators are welcome and encouraged. Matt explained that Challenger games are three innings long, with each team batting through their lineup each time. The last batter in each inning circles the bases and tags home before taking the field to play defense. Just like NELL’s Little League program, the Challenger Division relies heavily on volunteers and participation from community members. “Getting to know these kids and watching them as they work together as a team is truly a gift,” said Matt. Joe said that he has been very fortunate when it comes to volunteers. “People generally reach out directly to me, but we are always looking for more,” he said. “Special Education teachers and coaches are always natural fits.” Several years ago, when Jimmy and Luke aged out of the Challenger Division, the Catanias discovered that there weren’t many

athletic programs for special needs adults. Recognizing that need and their sons’ love for the game, the Catanias formed the Challenger Senior League. “Because we are the only such Senior League around, we attract players from all over the area,” said Matt. “Some players and their families travel over an hour each way to play ball with us.” You’ll find the Challenger Senior League players on the NELL fields every Sunday at 5pm.

The formation of the Senior Challenger League also gives older players the opportunity to be assistant coaches, helpers and mentors for the younger NELL Challenger League. Jimmy said, “The best part of being involved with the Challenger League is being a coach and teaching baseball to younger players.”
NELL President Daren Grande said that NELL’s Challenger Division is such a success because of the Catania family. “We are happy to support them and are so proud that other leagues model their programs after ours.” Daren said that it is not only important that these kids have a place to play ball, but that other NELL teams, their families and the community have the opportunity to learn about the special needs community.

“We are one big family,” said Joe. “We watch these kids grow as players and as friends.” He said that in addition to their regular season of games, the team takes time to have fun at their annual Father’s Day game and the event everyone looks forward to: the end-of-season pool party at Joe and Maureen Catania’s house. Your HVAC Spring TO - DON’T List What’s better than a TO-DO list? A TO-DON’T list! When it comes to your HVAC system, avoiding certain behaviors and ensuring you don’t neglect proper maintenance is critical to keeping your system functioning. Winter might be fading away (for now), but spring and summer have their own challenges, and indoor air quality is important year round. To protect your family’s health and keep your HVAC system in tip-top shape, here is your spring to-don’t list. DON’T leave that dirty filter in your furnace. Neglecting your filter leads to dust in your ductwork, increased allergen levels and a struggling blower. Replace your filter this spring to avoid poor indoor air quality and the issues that come with it.

DON’T forget to clean your furnace room. Add the furnace room to your spring clean-up list so your equipment has the right amount of clearance for safe and efficient operation. DON’T neglect a tune-up. Neglecting your HVAC equipment is another habit to change this spring. Add this to the top of your to-do list for the season, and you’ll reap the benefits for the years added to your equipment’s lifespan. Even though we’re moving out of the “furnace season,” this is a great time to address any possible issues your furnace may have developed from keeping you warm all winter. Tuning up your air conditioner during the spring season will also prepare you for the sweltering heat before it becomes a problem. DON’T ignore your ventilation. Ventilation is critical regardless of the season, but if you have allergies that act up in the spring, it may be tempting to shut all the windows and recirculate air to avoid outdoor allergens. That’s not the solution. A robust ventilation system gives you the benefit of outdoor air without exposure to allergens from outside. Ensure that your exhaust systems work, and consider a heat recovery ventilation system with high-efficiency filters to get the benefit of outdoor air without the allergens. DON’T leave your thermostat turned up. As the temperature outside rises, you might take this opportunity to experience an early summer indoors. However, this wastes energy and is unnecessary for you to maintain indoor comfort levels. If you have a programmable thermostat, lower your setpoints as the weather improves, or do it manually as needed. NS

H appy Easter! After church every Sunday, breakfast is a big deal in our house. My wife Jean has her crew on duty. Usually it’s Jerry breaking eggs, Joe making coffee, Jim frying meat, and me assigned to toaster duty while Jean cuts up fruit or prepares some bread or guacamole before cooking eggs to order. No wonder our oldest son John and our lovely new daughter-in-law Lyndsay often join us. But this Easter Sunday, our
crew deserves a holiday. And a bigger breakfast. So does your family! Celebrate Easter Sunday with us on April 17th. Treat your family to the best Easter Sunday Brunch in Newtown Square. Not at our home, at Bright Spot Cafe on the Ellis Preserve. Reservations are required. See your invitation on page 8. Happy Easter, Everyone! by Bob Blaisse
