Forty-eight issues later, we enter our fifth year of successfully publishing Newtown Square’s hometown magazine, which so many of you have told me for years has become your favorite mail surprise each month. Here’s how I introduced myself and our new hometown magazine to all of you back in August 2018. Our first issue came in your mail that month unexpectedly, and has continued to arrive every month since thanks to the hometown heroes, our advertising Sponsors who can take all the credit for our success. Welcome Friends & Neighbors of Newtown Square, to the inaugural edition of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine. As a resident of Newtown Square for nearly 25 years, I’m honored that Best Version Media has asked me to serve as Publisher of our hometown’s new monthly magazine in service to the residents and businesses of Newtown Square. Each month, Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors will introduce you to Newtown residents you may already know. If not, you will learn about them through a cover story inside your hometown magazine filled with articles of interest and features written by local Expert Contributors. This month, meet “The Kohlhepp Family” and read their story. You’ll also recognize local businesses whose advertising in our magazine should be rewarded for their sponsorship of our community. Please reach out to thank these businesses for bringing your hometown magazine to you each month. And please, whenever possible, shop local. It was the Kohlhepp Family that launched us four years ago. Now we ‘Welcome the family of Bob Dodge and Ashleigh Caiazzo, as seen on the cover of this anniversary issue, which Sheila Turner-Hilliard has put together for us to kick off our fifth year. Bob, Ashleigh and their children are making memories in Newtown Square and now making history too as they join our continued mission to be Bringing People Together by sharing their story with us, as they did while relaxing at Newtown Square’s gem, St. Albans Swim Club. I know you’ll enjoy reading their story. Take this issue to read at your pool or the beach, and enjoy this last full month of summer!

I know for sure that our Resident Feature family is enjoying these last few weeks of summer cooling off at St. Albans Swim Club! Bob, Ashleigh and their three kids love making memories at the pool and in our community. We’ve got lots to celebrate this month with a full recap of the 4th of July parade winners and a special announcement about the return of Pints in the Square Brew Fest. Resident Feature
Meet Bob, Ashleigh and the Kids: Exactly Where They're Meant To Be by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos by Crissy Everhart Photography www.CrissyEverhart.com
We would like to thank Alpha Century Security for sponsoring this month’s Resident Feature. Ashleigh and Bob
Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors is proud to introduce you to Bob Dodge, Ashleigh Caiazzo and their three children: Lilly, Liam and Bobby. They are a family who truly values Newtown Square’s strong community connections, the love and support they have received as neighbors and business owners and the opportunity to show their appreciation by getting involved and giving back. Bob and Ashleigh both grew up in Havertown. Bob went to Lynnewood Elementary and Ashleigh attended Manoa Elementary. Their paths crossed when they got to Haverford High School. “Bob and I began dating in high school,” Ashleigh explained. “We were together for a few years but then went our separate ways.” Bob went on to earn his associate’s degree in Business Management and Ashleigh completed courses to receive her Child Development Accreditation. A few years went by, and as life — or fate — would have it, they reconnected. Ashleigh found out that one of her co-workers knew Bob through his work, so Ashleigh reached out to him. “It was one of those ‘small world’ moments, but it turned out to be the beginning of something much larger.” Bob and Ashleigh began talking more, then meeting for coffee on weekends and eventually going on dates. By this time, Bob was living in Newtown Square while Ashleigh was in Havertown. After a few years of dating, they decided that Newtown Square would be the perfect place to blend their lives and family, so Ashleigh and her two children moved in with Bob. Two years later, they added their son to the family, got engaged and are planning a wedding in the near future. Their oldest, Lilly, loves to sing, dance and play the flute. She’s heading into 7th grade at Paxon Hollow Middle School and loves being a member of the school band. “Lilly is very creative 6

and caring,” Ashleigh said. “She loves art, cooking, baking and helping me around the house.” Lilly also has a soft side for animals and is always asking her parents to adopt more. They already have two cats named after their favorite pastas, Gnocchi and Penne, along with a white German Shepherd named Loki! Liam is next in line and loves all-things sports. He will be entering 5th grade at Culbertson Elementary this fall. Liam plays baseball for Newtown Edgmont Little League, football with Marple Junior Tigers and recently started wrestling. “Liam loves to make everyone laugh,” Bob said. “He also loves to train with me in martial arts and I’m excited to start helping to coach him in wrestling” Bob and Ashleigh’s youngest is Bobby. “Bobby is a love bug who never stops moving,” Ashleigh laughed. “He may be only three years old, but he has no problem keeping up with his brother and sister.” Ashleigh said they make sure Bobby has plenty of outlets for all that energy by playing soccer, riding his bike and building things. He also loves to watch his dad and brother while they’re practicing martial arts. Bob explained that his business management degree has come in handy, but his true passion is art. “I’ve always considered myself an artist,” he said. “When I was in high school, my friends and family would ask me to draw tattoo designs for them and it was fascinating to see my designs come to life.” Bob said that by the time he was 18, he knew he wanted to pursue tattooing as his career. Bob attended his first tattoo convention in Philadelphia that year and walked away with all the tools he needed to get started.
Bob’s natural talent and hard work landed him a coveted apprenticeship with the legendary tattoo artist RC. “I feel very fortunate to have learned from the very best in the industry,” Bob said. “RC gave me so many opportunities to grow as an artist and to get my name out there.” One of his most memorable experiences came from the time he spent on WMMR’s Preston and Steve radio show. Every Tuesday was Tattoosday, when lucky guests, who would often wait over a year to get the call, would get a custom tattoo in the studio. Bob’s impressive portfolio and waitlist grew so fast that he decided to open his own studio. In 2013 he opened Red Sparrow Tattoo in Downingtown. The success of Red Sparrow and the desire to expand brought him closer to home. These days you’ll find Bob in his Runic Tattoo studio, located right in St. Albans Circle. “I love it because I am so close to home and I also get to work with Ashleigh, who does our body piercings.” Ashleigh said she does love working at Runic Tattoo when she’s not busy planning epic vacations for her clients. “I was a preschool teacher for many years before becoming a travel agent,” she explained. “What made me change careers was when Bob and I worked with someone to help us plan our first family trip to Disney in 2021.” She said that their agent from Mad Hatter Adventures took care of every detail and that they had the trip of a lifetime. “I was so impressed and so intrigued by the process, I decided that I wanted to give my family, my friends and my future clients the same incredible vacation experience.”
Ashleigh and Bob’s children (L to R): Liam, Bobby and Lilly
After they returned from Disney, Ashleigh called the travel agency and went in to meet the owner. “I cannot say enough wonderful things about the entire team,” Ashleigh gushed. “The level of support and training is outstanding. Oh, and the Continued on page 8

Resident Feature travel perks aren’t bad, either!” Of course, Ashleigh mentioned this as she was packing her suitcase to explore yet another vacation destination. When Ashleigh’s not busy balancing her kids and her career, she dabbles in photography. “I get my artistic side from my grandmother,” she said. “My grandmother painted with watercolors and always had a camera by her side.” Last year Bob bought Ashleigh a Nikon camera and she hopes to learn more about photography and incorporate it into her travel agency business.

Bob, Ashleigh and the kids enjoying time at St. Albans Swim Club
Both Bob and Ashleigh agree that the paths they have taken have led them to exactly where they are meant to be. They love living in Newtown Square and being involved in our community. One of their favorite places to spend time is St. Albans Swim Club. “We joined in 2021 and can tell you that it is one of the best things we’ve ever done,” Ashleigh said. “The club offers so much for families. They have beautifully maintained pools, the best snack bar, playgrounds, tennis courts and they just recently added a mini-golf course.” Ashleigh and Bob also make it a priority to give back to the community that they love. Runic Tattoo sponsors many of our community programs and sports teams. Bob has also joined the Marple Civic Association, the Newtown Square Business Association, volunteers at NELL and gives his time to the Marple Junior Tigers. He and Ashleigh regularly donate to our police and EMS departments. Thank you, Ashleigh and Bob, for sharing your story. Your dedication to your family, your neighborhood and your community is inspiring. We look forward to watching your family and your careers flourish for years to come. Hand-Tied Extensions: People are Obsessed! Q: Does your hair take forever to grow, or do you dream of having thicker, fuller hair? A: Habit hand-tied extensions are just what you’re looking for! There are numerous methods of obtaining hair extensions, just about all of which are annoying or terrible for your hair.
Newtown Square’s On Location Bridal Team Have You Booked Your Wedding Day Hair And Makeup?
Whether you’re looking for more volume, adding a little length to get you through the awkward growing out your hair phase or a full on transformation, the Habit Extension Method is the answer to all your hair extension needs. How are They Put In? Using no heat, no glue and no adhesive, a track of beads and string are applied to the hair, and then the wefts are sewn to that string and your natural hair, making them secure to your head. They don’t pull on your hair, like some other methods, so they cause less tension on your hair, which prevents breakage. Can I Put My Hair Up? Because of the way they’re attached, with Habit Extensions you can easily pull your hair up into a high ponytail or braids, without showing the tracks. When you get this method done, you can wear your hair in pretty much any style without showing the usual telltale signs that you have extensions.
Blushing Brides by Blush Salon will take care of all your beauty needs on your special day.
What Makes Them So Popular? The Habit Extension Method offers much more versatility and fullness for every day styles, unique styles and even bridal styles. Everyone’s hairline is different, so your extensions need to have a custom fit in order to give you as much freedom with your style as possible.
@blush__salon @blushing_bride_team
I
However, the Habit Extension Method is the most comfortable and versatile extension method available. The wefts are attached solely using silicone lined beads and string, making it the healthiest extension method available for your hair.
These extensions come in all different lengths and colors, blend seamlessly and last a long time. With proper maintenance, the hair itself can last for up to a year. Once you get the extensions put in, they last 8–10 weeks before needing to be moved up, and you can still color your hair as you normally would. So you don’t have to change up your look, unless you want to. In which case, the sky’s the limit! NS

Chloe will be a Senior at Marple Newtown High School (MNHS) in September. Some of her favorite classes have been U.S. History, Psychology and AP Language and Composition.

Add to that the fact that Chloe also takes part in the high school’s Hospitality Committee Mini-thon, which raises funds for pediatric cancer research, and it’s easy to see what makes Chloe such an outstanding Student of the Month!
Chloe enjoys taking on a large role in numerous MNHS clubs, including being the President of the History Honor Society and Treasurer of the English Honor Society and a member of the Science Honor Society, not to mention being a member of the National Honor Society since Sophomore year. In her Senior year, she hopes to improve upon her already high GPA of 4.2.

Your Home, Safe and Welcoming With Exterior Lighting Lighting around your home’s exterior can provide safety, security, and a sense of pride and enjoyment in daylight and especially at night.
turn lights on and off at any time of day and even to adjust light levels are all in your control, depending on how sophisticated you want to be.
Landscape lighting around your home can range from a simple wall light to a spectacular scene. Today, light fixtures and light bulbs are available in a seemingly endless variety of sizes, shapes, designs and colors. And the quality of lighting systems and fixtures ranges from plug-and-play like what the “big box” stores sell with little or no warranty, to bronze fixtures that have a lifetime warranty.
When choosing landscape lighting fixtures, your choices are plentiful. A few of the many applications are path lights, up lights, flood lights, lights that wash light on walls, lamp post lights, and lighting in masonry walls along paths and around pool decks.
With advances in wireless bluetooth technology, the internet and WiFi, lights can be controlled from your handheld device, desktop computer, laptop computer and so on. The ability to
A lighting system doesn’t need to be elaborate to be effective. Path lighting that’s pleasing to look at in the daylight becomes a practical safety feature at night. Most times, just a few simple lights strategically placed can make your home quite pleasant to look at. For a more dramatic effect at night, use up lighting that washes your home’s features, trees and shrubs in light. Some home security lighting systems can even easily integrate with your home’s landscape lighting plan, flood lights and your video doorbell/camera system. When considering starting a new lighting plan, upgrading what you have or just repairing your home’s current light fixtures and bulbs, take a look around. Go to the internet and have fun searching products, systems and accessories. You might also take a drive at night, to observe other homes’ lighting effects and get ideas for what might be best for your home.

Fall Inspired Paint Colors To Warm Your Home With the right shade of paint, your home can be made to look warmer and more welcoming. You can completely transform the feeling of a room, even if the wall color is the only thing that you change. As the days become shorter and the nights become cooler, we often find ourselves inspired to make our homes cozier and more inviting. Adding a fresh coat of paint to a room is a simple way to achieve this, but which colors are people drawn to at this time of year? From vibrant oranges to earthy greens and browns, fall is best known for its spectacular array of colors. If your walls are in need of an update, draw inspiration from autumn’s most beloved hues. Dynamic Orange Color Combinations Orange is a traditionally earthy color, especially when it has brown undertones. When picking a shade of orange, choose a color that is more of a burnt orange or bronze. Vivid Yellow Color Schemes Darker, more elegant yellow hues that resemble the marigolds and sunflowers of the fall season work well to bring warmth to a room. They’ll easily transition well into winter by pairing with
THOMPSON Custom Painting
red and green accents. Plus, they’ll give you a splash of sunlight during the months when the sun shines less. Captivating Brown Color Palettes Browns don’t have to be boring. By capturing the essence of fall foliage with several other seasonal shades, softer browns can make any interior space feel warm and pleasant. Take a cue from nature and get inspired by these natural brown shades that are anything but neutral. Exquisite Autumn Greens Evergreen trees in a rich, deep shade of green, or the color of moss covered ground peeking through the fallen leaves, evoke a feeling of abundance and renewal, which is perfect for the fall season! When picking a shade of green, try to choose one that has a bit of gray in the blend for a more grounded tone. Green paint pairs well with many other fall tones as well. While we’re sad to see summer go, we love to see the character behind the rich, warm tones of this season of change. If you’re not ready to commit to painting a full room, these colors can also help guide smaller-scale projects like painting an accent wall or trim. NS

Giving Their Customers Peace of Mind
Countywide
GENERATORS
Let’s face it, when our power is disrupted, our life is disrupted. For the past several years, changing weather patterns and overworked power grids have led to frequent and long power outages in our area. Luckily, whole house generators can give us peace of mind when power outages occur. Steve Di Tomo, owner of Countywide Generators, LLC said the best way to keep from getting frustrated from these power outages is to “get generated!” A licensed electrician for almost 40 years, Steve has the knowledge and experience to help his customers get through even the worst of power outages. Steve has been an electrician since 1973. He grew up in Philadelphia and in 1970 he graduated from Dobbins Technical High School, a historic vocational school located in north Philadelphia. After high school he joined the Air Force and he learned electronics and electrical skills by working on fighter and cargo aircrafts. When he completed his military service, he worked as an electronics apprentice and eventually a supervisor at the Navy Yard in Philadelphia until it closed in 1996. After it closed, Steve wasn’t quite ready to retire and had to decide what to do next in his career. “I followed the philosophy of do what you know!” he said. For Steve, that meant taking electrical code courses at Delaware County Community College and earning his electrical license in Philadelphia.
Steve Di Tomo, owner of Countywide Generators
While Steve was working as an electrician, he installed numerous generators in homes over the years. Not only did he want to make sure his customers got the full advantage of owning a whole-house generator, but he wanted to gain more expertise in generator maintenance. As the owner of Countywide Generators for the past five years, Steve said that he’s proud of his team who not only dispatch technicians quickly when customers have issues, they are also equipped to resolve most repairs right then and there, even if the customer is not home. Countywide Generators installs generators from Generac, the industry leader. Because Generac generators come right off the assembly line, they’re brand new with all of the latest updates. The company’s dealer relationship with Generac and being connected to their mainframe allows them to quickly troubleshoot any issues. “What sets us apart from hiring an electrician or other company is that when we install a generator, we deal with Generac directly so that customers don’t have to and we handle any warranty issues,” he explained. “Another advantage for our customers is that we have up-to-date maintenance records.” Like a central air-conditioning unit, Generac generators sit outside your home delivering power directly to the home’s electrical system in the event of a power outage. It runs on natural gas or liquid propane fuel and when the power goes out, the generator starts up automatically and supplies electricity until the local power utility restores service. By using the Generac’s Mobile Link™ app, customers can monitor the status of their generator from anywhere in the world using a smartphone, tablet or computer.

Steve explained that to get the maximum benefit from your generator, it’s important to get the required maintenance as soon as an issue arises. Some common issues include dead batteries, a natural gas or propane fuel supply issue, a faulty circuit board, clogged lines or leaking coolant. Most importantly, it’s crucial to hire a generator expert. Hiring a non-factory certified expert who doesn’t install your generator correctly will lead to problems in the future. “For your generator to operate when you need it, proper maintenance is the key," said Steve.
Countywide Generators’ staff includes highly trained technicians and installers. Steve and his team of expert professionals will ensure safe and proper operation, meet warranty conditions and provide emergency assistance every day of the week. Michelle Saraceni is the Office Manager and she handles everything from payroll to monitoring customers’ generators online. When a customer has an issue with their generator, Michelle gets an alert, and one of their technicians is sent out to do any repairs. From TV/WiFi, cooking, lighting, cooling, etc., generators can create enough power to meet all of a customer’s electric needs all at the same time. Now more than ever, with people teleworking and many relying on electricity to monitor a home security system, to store medication or to operate medical equipment, a permanently installed generator gives homeowners peace of mind. “For our customers who rely on electricity for medical issues, power outages are more than just an inconvenience,” said Steve. “A whole-house generator can eliminate that stress for them.” Having a whole house generator can also save homeowners money down the line in appliance repairs and pipe replacements, as well as preventing having to replace spoiled food or staying somewhere else while you wait for your power to be restored. “Many people think they can't afford a generator and therefore must endure power outages caused by storms

or downed power lines,” said Steve. “When they learn that the monthly cost can be spread out over many years, they realize what a sensible and practical decision it is.” Countywide Generators is located in Broomall, where Steve and his wife Kate have lived for 15 years. They enjoy spending as much time as they can with their 5 children and 13 grandchildren. Steve is also the owner of STD/Maintenance Company, Inc. History Spotlight
The West Chester Trolley by Doug Humes Photos courtesy of Newtown Square Historical Society
Two trolleys on the siding next to Hanley’s farm in Newtown Square, now the Newtown Square Shopping Center The sign that marked the stops along the line when it was operated as a Red Arrow line
West Chester Pike has been a witness to the history of transportation in Delaware County. From its first creation in the 1790s, the road saw foot traffic, horse and wagons, a “plank road” turnpike, regular stagecoach service and finally in 1895, a horse-drawn and later motorized trolley line that eventually connected the 69th Street Terminal with West Chester.
The colors of the early trolleys
The Philadelphia and West Chester Traction Company built the trolley line to Newtown Square in 1895 – running nine miles from 63rd and Baltimore Avenue in Philadelphia to Newtown Square. The fare was 10 cents. The line was assured of initial

financial success in 1896, when the US Post Office hired it to carry the mail to towns along the way: Manoa, Adele, Broomall and Newtown Square. More income would come in 1899 when the Castle Rock amusement park opened. Initial passenger service was provided beginning in August 1895 with “steam dummies” before trolley cars powered by electricity were put into service. The trolley helped provide for access and growth to the western suburbs. The city could easily visit the country, and vice versa. Workers could look for jobs a little further from home when they did not have to walk to get there. Amusement and recreation destinations were created to lure the city dwellers out into the country. Broomall Grove offered live music and dancing. Castle Rock offered picnicking and rides. Years of legal wrangling delayed the extension of the line the 11 additional miles to West Chester, but on New Year’s Eve of 1898, the first trolley left 63rd and Market Streets at 1:00pm and arrived at West Chester at 2:20pm, after a run of 20 miles. The first cars carried company President John N.M. Shimer along with other company officials and stockholders. They were greeted on their arrival by local officials, at which time they all made their way to the Green Tree Hotel for speeches and libations.

Trolley Car #22, being restored at the Newtown Square Railroad Museum on West Chester Pike
In the mid 1930s, the line was consolidated with other lines that were part of the Philadelphia Suburban Transportation Company, all converging on the beautiful new 69th Street Terminal building in Upper Darby, which opened on October 26, 1936. However, the postwar suburban boom and the rise of the private automobile led to the widening of West Chester Pike, leaving no room for the trolley tracks. The trolley line was abandoned in June of 1954, to be replaced by the next technology – the bus, which is still running today as Route 104! Senior Living:
How Much Is It and Who Pays for It? Retirement communities and senior housing can be an expensive proposition – often more expensive than expected. Who pays for what? How much do they each cost? Short-Term Rehab: After a hospitalization, one may require a stay at a short-term rehab facility for physical, occupational and speech therapy in order to be better prepared to return back home. This stay is covered by Medicare up to a specific number of days, which can vary, and after that point, there may be a co-payment. COST: Covered by Medicare Independent Living (IL): This type of community includes many amenities, often including meals, utilities, transportation and activities. But any personal care assistance would require the individual to hire a private-duty aide/home care aide. COST: ~$2,500 – $5,000 / month (this varies by size of residence)
Assisted Living (AL) / Personal Care (PC): While this varies by state, in Pennsylvania, AL/PC communities are privately paid for, meaning they are not covered by Medicare or Medicaid but rather by savings, the proceeds of a home sale, retirement accounts and pensions. Long-Term Care policies can also be used to help defer the costs, though they are less common. COST: ~$4,500 – $7,000 / month (this varies based on care needs and size of residence) Memory Care (MC): Paid for privately, as described previously for AL/PC. COST: ~$6,000 – $8,500 / month (this varies based on care needs and size of residence) Long-Term Skilled Nursing / Nursing Home: Nursing homes are the most expensive of the options given the level of care they provide and type of staff in the facility. This is also the only environment that can be covered by Medicaid, though not every Nursing Home accepts Medicaid. COST: ~$11,000 – $15,000 / month (paying privately or spending down* to qualify for Medicaid) *Spending down is when subtracting medical expenses and cost sharing lowers a person's income to a level that qualifies them for Medicaid. Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC): This community has all of the different levels of care on site, from Independent Living through Skilled Nursing. Their cost structure typically requires a large upfront buy-in in addition to a monthly cost. The buy-in can act like an Insurance policy, covering the resident through all levels of care. COST: Buy-Ins range widely based on community, from $90,000 – $1,000,000 and up

The Return of by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos courtesy of the Pints in the Square committee
The long-awaited return of Pints in the Square Craft Brew Fest and 5K is finally here! After a 2-year hiatus, the committee is excited to announce that the 5th annual celebration of local craft brewing, food vendors and live music will happen on Saturday, September 17th at Delaware County Veterans Memorial, 4599 West Chester Pike Newtown Square. Pints in the Square was co-founded by Rick Thompson, Sponsor of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine and owner of Thompson Custom Painting. The idea for the event came to him after he attended a beer festival in a neighboring town. He pitched the idea to some friends, and they got to work. Rick’s wife Bridget, a runner, loved the idea, too, and suggested including a 5K to start the day.
The festivities begin with a 5k run
It didn’t take long for Pints in the Square to become the talk of the town. In its first year alone, the festival drew over 500 attendees. It had been determined that this annual event would benefit the Newtown Square Fire Company, a 501(c)3 organization. Between ticket sales, vendors and event sponsorships, they raised an impressive $25,000 in donations. The amount of money raised and visitors attending this year’s Brew Fest is expected to keep multiplying just as the 2022 event committee has grown to 15+ dedicated members. The event kicks off with a chip-timed 5K run that is open to all ages. Registration is required and all participants will receive an event t-shirt and a participation medal. No bikes or roller blades will be permitted along the route. Everyone will need to sign a waiver, and anyone under age 18 must have a parent/ guardian sign. The celebration at the finish line continues when you head over to the Brew Fest from 12–4pm. This portion of the afternoon is a 21+ event, and everyone entering will be required to present a valid government-issued ID. All Brew Fest participants will receive a tasting glass, entrance to the festival with unlimited tastings, live music, and access to purchase food from local vendors. There will be an impressive selection of over 50 craft beers from more than 25 local and regional craft breweries. You can register for the 5k and get your tickets for the Brew Fest online at www.PintsInTheSquare.com. The tickets can either be for the 5K and the Brew Fest ($75); for the 5K only ($30); or for the Brew Fest only ($50). This year, designated drivers can

Fulfilling Your American Dream Depends on the Quality of the Questions You’re Asking Which stocks should I buy? Should I be in the market or out of the market? Which fund manager has the best track record? Perhaps unknowingly, what investors are really trying to get answers to is, what’s going to happen next, in the future? However, it might be helpful to ask, how many people in the world can reliably, consistently predict the future, and if they could, why would they share that skill with you? Imagine if you knew in advance what the stock market would do and how affluent and powerful you would become. It’s fun to dream, but not practical.
Investor Coaching Session
Cracking the Code!
These questions turn investors into gamblers and speculators, not prudent investors because success depends on the future occurring the way you believe it will. Now ask yourself, how comforting is it to be rolling the dice with money intended for important things like retirement or your children’s education? So, what would be the correct, more effective and empowering questions for an investor to ask? Here are a few: 1. How do markets actually work? How does the market generate returns and set prices? 2. What are the warning signs that I am or am allowing someone to gamble and speculate with my money rather than prudently invest it? 3. Do I have a way to mathematically measure how much risk/volatility is in my portfolio? 4. Do I have a clear-cut method for measuring the success or failure of my portfolio? Engaging in a process to discover the answers to these questions will give you a breakthrough in clarity, freedom and power around money and fulfilling your American Dream. NS

PROSTHETIC INNOVATIONS: Broomall Natives Change Lives Through Prosthetics by Holly Stupak Photos courtesy of Tim Rayer After Broomall native Tim Rayer graduated from Marple Newtown High School in 1989, he was all set to pursue a degree in Physical Therapy. He had already been working at one of Pat Croce’s local Physical Therapy offices and was studying Exercise and Sports Science at Penn State Brandywine. Tim was also on PSU Brandywine’s basketball team and when his teammate lost a leg due to Osteosarcoma (a type of bone cancer), Tim’s career took a different turn. “Seeing my friend’s artificial limb had a huge impact on me,” said Tim. “I was fascinated.” Tim was so intrigued by the prosthetic that he shifted gears and decided to become a Certified Prosthetist. “Back in the 1990s, there wasn’t as much popularity in the area of prosthetics,” Tim explained. But Tim found an apprenticeship in a prosthetics practice and eventually completed his graduate work in Prosthetics at Newington Children’s Hospital and the University of Connecticut Medical School. Meanwhile Tim’s older brother Mike had earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Virginia in 1993. The brothers shared an apartment together in Newtown Square and Tim began bringing some of his prosthetic limbs home to show Mike. “I could see Mike's mind spinning,” said Tim. “He was really interested in the mechanics and the technology of it.” With Mike’s interest now sparked in prosthetics too, he began coming into work with Tim to learn more. Ultimately, he completed his graduate education at the University of Connecticut Medical School and Newington Children’s Hospital and also became a Certified Prosthetist.
Tim Rayer with Army Sgt. Miles Kamson
The Rayer brothers honed their skills in prosthetics for a few years and eventually opened up Prosthetics Innovations, Inc. in 2006. Located in Eddystone, the company works with amputees in 30 states and nine countries, many of whom are military veterans. Their company provides innovative prosthetic care to amputees with permanent physical loss, specializing in highlevel below-knee (BK) and above-knee (AK), hip disarticulation, hemipelvectomy, above-elbow and shoulder disarticulation. Mike’s focus is upper extremity prosthetics, while Tim specializes in the design and fit of complex polytrauma patients including trans-femoral (AK), hemipelvectomy, hip disarticulation and running prosthetics. Mike also pioneers the program Team PROLIMB, which is dedicated to supporting amputees’ desire to resume their pre-injury activity level. Members compete in rigorous activities, including rock climbing, skiing and triathlons. Not only does this program provide encouragement, it also provides them with the mindset that there is a lifetime of opportunity. Chris Dalmass, a third partner in the practice, is the clinical expert with pediatric clients, as well as difficult trans-femoral clients. Tim originally connected with Chris when he was with a competing prosthetic company in Philadelphia. “I was so impressed with his work and he really aligned with our philosophy,” said Tim.

The Prosthetic Innovations team also includes prosthetic technicians and insurance specialists, as well as other administrative staff. They have also partnered with Drexel University’s cooperative education program. “These students are some of the best and brightest and bring a great energy to our practice,” said
Tim. He also said he’d be remiss if he didn’t mention that his dad Tom also works part-time for the company. “As a Vietnam Vet, he’s an asset to have and shows support and understanding to the veterans that we work with,” he added. What sets Prosthetic Innovations apart from competitors and large healthcare facilities is the fact that their staff sees the ‘big picture.’ “For us, simply following the ‘industry standard’ is not enough,” he said. “We have the capability to develop the absolute best possible prosthetic solution for each and every client. The goal for our clients is to return to a healthy and successful life.” For some clients that means they design activity-specific prosthetics. “When we first meet with clients we ask questions about what they want to do. Ride a bike? Swim? Walk down the aisle?” he explained. “Then we work as a team with doctors and therapists to set functional goals and formulate a plan for success.” Prosthetic Innovations is also known for their willingness to work with cutting-edge technology. Congratulations to All Winners In the 4th of July Parade! by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos courtesy of the 4th of July Parade Committee The reviews are in: The 2022 Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade was one for the record books! The weather was perfect, the streets were packed with people, and the excitement in the air was electric. Praise and thanks to the Parade Committee flooded their Facebook page just minutes after the conclusion. Words used to describe the event were “spectacular,” “the best one yet,” and “absolutely perfect.” This year’s parade Grand Marshall was William (Bill) Greco Jr. Bill is the co-owner of The Original Thunderbird Steakhouse which was founded in 1956 by his grandfather, Salvatore and his father, William Sr. Bill and his brother Tom are proud to be part of our community and continually support our Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade as well as charitable causes to help those in need throughout Marple Newtown. Best of Parade winner Newtown Square Presbyterian Church
Spectators were entertained by marching bands such as Mersey-British Rock Invasion and the Spirit of Slim 76. And returning to the parade this year was The Marching Cobras Drumline and Danceline from New York. South Philly’s WhoaPhat Brass Band and the Bushwackers Drum and Bugle Corps from New Jersey got the crowd up on their feet and our community marching bands, fire companies and first responders joined in the fun. Local businesses, community clubs and neighborhood residents did not disappoint with their decorated floats and marching groups. But it was the little ones who stole the show with their creative and festively decorated strollers, wagons, hand-drawn floats and bikes. The award for Best of Parade was Newtown Square Presbyterian Church whose decorated float earned them the largest trophy of the day.
Tom Greco, co-owner of The Original Thunderbird Steakhouse with his brother, Bill Greco who was the Grand Marshall of the parade
The parade ended with a celebration of our great country. Volunteers were on hand to serve pretzels, ice pops and water. The crowd gathered to listen to The Marple Newtown Community Band play our National Anthem, after which the awards ceremony began. Medals and trophies were given to the top three entries in each division, and their names and photos will be featured in the 2023 parade commemorative book. Congratulations to All of the Winners! Back when the 2020 parade was canceled due to the pandemic, the committee launched a Red, White and YOU! decorating contest for area residents and businesses. The turnout has been so successful over the past two years that they decided to continue the tradition. Judges toured the area and awarded prizes such as “Best Window,” “Most Patriotic” and “Most Spectacular.” There were over 40 entries from Broomall and Newtown Square. Judging took place June 30 and July 1, and winners were greeted by a caravan of judges, complete with Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty and a congratulatory lawn sign. All entries received a participation certificate.

Wood Splitting 101
In the 1950s, the new Lickity 8-horsepower log splitter became a popular gas-powered machine that professional tree experts often used to recycle into firewood the wood from trees they had cut down on recent jobs. Some of those machines are still in operation today. Using the Lickity log splitter requires a lot of manual intervention. Each log must first be cut into wood rounds. Then each wood round must be loaded by hand onto the splitting machine, which uses a motorized arm to push the wood into a wedge cutter, thus splitting the wood. This process is repeated again and again until you have a pile of wedges that are the desired size (18–22" is standard fireplace length). Splitting a cord of wood (4x4x8 or 128 cubic feet) can take several hours depending on how many people are doing the splitting. Over the years, upgrades in equipment have made firewood processing much more efficient. The cord of wood that used to take hours to split can now be done in a matter of minutes. Nowadays, Timberwolf splitters, skid steers, grapple trucks, conveyors, tumblers and the Cord King processor are all things that make a wood splitting operation run smoothly.
Seasoned firewood is split one year ahead, to allow for a low moisture content. Under 20% moisture is ideal. Ash, oak, maple, cherry and beech are the most common hardwoods split for firewood, with oak being the premium cut because it burns hotter and longer than the others. Never use pine for indoor burning because it’s the wood that produces the most unhealthy creosote due to its high sap content, which makes it very smokey. Ordering firewood early in the season (late summer to early fall) is a smart thing to do because you’ll get the driest, most aesthetically attractive wood because it has been on the top of the wood pile bathing in the summer sun. Burning firewood to heat your home is much more cost effective, especially in our present economy. Depending on how many gallons your oil tank holds, you could be spending over $2500 to fill your tank for the winter months. Heating with wood is probably around ¼ of that cost. A local tree expert can help you accurately calculate potential savings based on the square footage in your home that you may be considering heating with wood. NS

Newtown Township’s K- 9 Program: Thank you, Officer Anthony Kyne
Boya’s friendly demeanor allows Officer Kyne to educate our school children and community
by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos courtesy of Anthony Kyne
It’s no secret that Newtown Square is a special place to live, work and raise a family. Everywhere you go, you can easily find 2nd, 3rd and even 4th generations of families who value our community for its neighborhoods, schools and community pride. But it’s also no secret that in recent years, Newtown Township has seen record growth. New housing developments and retail town centers are being constructed which means more residents, more visitors, more traffic and an increased need to keep our friends and neighbors safe. For Newtown Township Officer Anthony Kyne, serving and protecting his community means doing all he can to ensure our safety. Like many of us, Anthony grew up in Newtown Square and graduated from Marple Newtown High School. His family still lives here and Anthony recently bought a home of his own in the same neighborhood. “I have always enjoyed helping people,” Anthony explained. “I took Criminal Justice classes in college and decided that becoming an officer was the right path for me.” Anthony began his career with the Collingdale Police Department before joining Newtown Township in March 2018 as a Patrolman. It didn’t take long for Anthony to decide that he wanted to make an even bigger difference. “I noticed that there was a need in Newtown Township and our surrounding communities for a K9 program,” said Anthony. “K9s not only assist in tracking and detection, but they are also a valuable tool in fostering relationships between our residents and law enforcement.”
Anthony began doing research before bringing his idea to Chief Lunn. He explained that Newtown Township once had a K9 program under the direction of Officer Jeff Johnson. “Jeff gave me great advice and guidance,” he said. “Between my research and Jeff ’s support, I felt confident enough to develop a proposal.” Chief Lunn fully supported Anthony’s efforts. “Implementing a K9 program is much more than selecting the right dog,” Anthony remarked. “There are some pretty significant costs associated with it like ongoing training courses, a K9 vehicle, housing, food and veterinary visits.” All in all, Anthony said he needed to raise over $100,000. He began reaching out to local business owners, community members and his fellow officers. “The response was overwhelming,” he said. “Before I knew it, I was collecting checks for hundreds and even thousands of dollars.” Some of the K9 program’s largest supporters have been Equus Capital Partners, Ltd., GMH Associates, Creative Financial Services, A Cut Above and NSM Insurance Group.

It didn’t take long for Anthony to reach his goal and start the process of selecting his dog. He wanted one that would be both friendly and approachable, yet capable of taking care of business. His match was a female Belgian Malinois Shepherd from Holland named Boya. Boya completed extensive training with Officer Kyne, and they are now certified in Patrol and Explosives Detection. Together, Boya and Officer Kyne work to protect residents, visitors, schools and businesses in Newtown Township. Boya can also assist with tracking missing and endangered persons and tracking people who engage in criminal activity. The duo performs extensive school checks, foot patrols and weekly business sweeps to ensure the relationship between the police and community is one built on connection, trust and openness.
WELCOME BACK PATIO
“I remember bringing Boya home on a Friday, and that Monday — her first day on the job — she was called to assist in two separate incidents,” Anthony said. “During the first call Boya successfully located a missing, endangered person in Edgmont, and while on the 2nd call, she tracked and located a suspect who fled on foot after being pulled over in Newtown Square.”

Boya certainly made an impressive debut on the force and continues to be a critical asset to our community. She has been called to do extensive school checks, weekly business and medical facility sweeps and neighborhood foot patrols. Boya’s expertise and proven success in performing her assigned tasks have earned her praise from Newtown Township as well as our surrounding communities which do not have their own K9 programs. “I am proud and grateful to live and work with so many supportive colleagues and community members,” Anthony remarked. “Without their trust and generosity, we wouldn’t have Boya.” Anthony, on behalf of your Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors, we would like to thank you for your tireless dedication to keeping our community safe.
