ON THE COVER
The
Dear Friends & Neighbors,
When I try to remember September, in years past, I still recall my own sluggish acceptance of heading off to another new school year. Now as a parent, with my two youngest of four sons heading off to college, this will surely be a September to Remember for my wife Jean and me. We’ll begin a new kind of September, now as empty nesters during the school year.
Remembering those Septembers, when our boys were entering a new school grade, at times managing through multiple schools with older boys in high school, I cannot forget that quick snap-back that started up school, Scouts, fall sports and community activities all around Labor Day. September is an exciting ride of new beginnings including Fall.
Four years ago, our Newtown Square community was experiencing a big new beginning. Our first issue of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine had arrived in August with a mission to be Bringing People Together. By September everyone was talking about the new local magazine, the one with a Newtown Square family on the cover, and wondering who would be on the September issue cover.
Four years later, our hometown magazine may have 100% readership in the homes Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors is mailed to monthly, while also being available to read or download online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com, just as our sister publication, Marple Friends & Neighbors (www.MarpleMag.com), is so widely read monthly by homeowners in Marple Township.
This year, staying in pace with September’s new beginnings, our publishing team is not only hard at work developing the October issues of our magazines, we are also about to widen our Bringing People Together outreach through our unique brand of socialmedia-in-print, to widen our friends and neighbors readership to homeowners in the newer home developments of Newtown Square, and to all homeowners in Edgemont Township. Next month the inaugural October 2022 issue of our third local magazine, Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors, launches. (More to come next month on that new beginning.)
The Party just keeps getting bigger Bringing People Together. And you know who we have to thank - our advertising Sponsors who make it all possible for you to receive this September issue of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors I know you’ll enjoy.
Bob Blaisse Publisher
Dear Residents,
So long, summer! It seems there’s never enough time to soak it all in. Here’s hoping you were able to fill some of your days with sun, surf and sand.
And just like that, September snaps us back to reality. Back to school, routines and all things pumpkin spice. We welcome cooler weather, falling leaves and post-season baseball. Speaking of baseball, join us in congratulating our very own Chris Newell who realized his dream of playing in the major leagues when he was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers. You’ll also meet the Leahy family who, despite just recently moving to Newtown Square, feel right at home. And our Business Profile highlights Mostardi Nursery: A family-owned business focused on quality customer service and a commitment to improving our community.
We are always looking for more Newtown Square families, individuals and organizations to feature in our magazine. If you’d like to nominate someone, please email me at STurnerHilliard@BestVersionMedia.com.

We would like to thank Bradley Tree Experts for sponsoring this month’s Resident Feature.
This month we are pleased to introduce you to the Leahy Family: Mike, Cheri, Sloane, Makenna and Philly. They may be new to Newtown Square, but the warm welcome and love they have received over the last few months make them feel as though they have been here for years.
Mike was born and raised in Upper Darby with his parents and his younger brother, Brian. “Brian was a big part of my life,” Mike said. “Unfortunately, he passed away just a few months ago.” Mike said that growing up in Delaware County was very special to him and his family. “I was born in Delco and all of my relatives still live in Delco!” Mike attended Beverly Hills Middle School and graduated from Upper Darby High School where he enjoyed playing baseball throughout his school years.
Mike had an interest in finance, so after graduating from Upper Darby, he began working for DLL, a global vendor finance company that serves equipment, technology and medical manufacturers, distributors and dealers in more than 30 countries.
“Today, I am an International Program Manager for DLL,” Mike explained. “I expand and build financial service capabilities and provide financial solutions to healthcare facilities in the United States and around the world.” His career does require quite a bit of international travel that Mike is grateful for. Over the course of his career, Mike has taken courses through Harvard Business School Online to stay on top of his industry and to learn new skills.
Cheri grew up in Mount Laurel, New Jersey with her parents and her older sister, Marlyn. She attended Countryside Elementary School in Mount Laurel where she discovered a love for art. Cheerleading became her passion at Lenape High School and she was also very active in school clubs and planning social events.
After high school, Cheri’s artistic and creative side led her to The Restaurant School in West Philadelphia where she studied culinary arts and hospitality management. “I have a deep love of food and food as art,” she explained. “My grandfather was an avid baker, and my mother is a phenomenal cook.”
Cheri then went on to earn her bachelor's degree in Nutrition and Food Science from Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina. She played golf and tennis while there and earned her board certification as a Registered Dietitian, where she worked to build programs to support public health and nutrition education. Today,
The Leahy Family: Welcome to the Neighborhood
Cheri is the Enterprise Service Line Director for Bariatric Surgery and Obesity Medicine at Jefferson Health. Cheri explained, “I am fortunate to have the opportunity to innovate new programming, encourage patient engagement and develop positive work relationships among our clinical and non-clinical staff.”
Cheri and Mike’s story began in October of 2002 when they met at Spectators bar in Springfield. Cheri said, “We introduced ourselves, started chatting and never stopped!” Cheri was studying at The Restaurant School and lived in West Philadelphia at the time and Mike had just begun his career with DLL. Then in 2008, Mike earned a promotion that required him to move to Raleigh, NC. He proposed to Cheri, and they packed their bags and headed south.
Life was busy for Cheri and Mike. Cheri was working hard in school to become a Registered Dietitian and Mike’s career was taking off. Wedding plans were underway too. Cheri and Mike decided that they would marry closer to their loved ones, so they chose to exchange their vows in June of 2010 at The Mansion in Vorhees, New Jersey. The fairytale continued with a honeymoon at the Waldorf Astoria in Puerto Rico. “It was a blissful 10 days,” Cheri said. “And even though Mike’s not a gambler, he took his chances at the resort casino and won big at the blackjack table!”

Mike and Cheri returned to Raleigh but said their hearts longed to be closer to home. Just a few short months after the wedding, they decided to move back north and settled on a house in Cherry Hill where they lived until the beginning of this year. “Back in 2006, Mike and I were living in Drexel Hill, and I would drive through Newtown Square to get to work every day,” Cheri recalled. “There was just something so special about it and that feeling stayed with me.”
They agreed to start looking for a home, but Mike was more interested in West Chester because many of his friends lived there. Cheri had a different plan, however. “We did look at a dozen or so houses in West Chester, but deep down I knew that Newtown Square was the only place I wanted to raise our family.”
Their family now included two young daughters who would have to switch schools and adjust to new surroundings while making new friends. Cheri and Mike knew they needed to make the right decision for their family and their future. And after endless research, consulting with friends and scouring neighborhoods, they found the perfect home on a quiet cul-de-sac in Newtown Square. “We love the kindness of our new neighbors,” Cheri remarked. “We truly feel that we belong here.”
Mike and Cheri’s oldest daughter, Sloane is a fourth grader at Culbertson Elementary School. She loves art, reading, baking and playing with her friends. She also stays very active with horseback riding, cheerleading and tennis. “Sloane is silly, kind and compassionate,” Cheri said. “She is wise beyond her years and her teachers consistently describe her as having strong leadership qualities.”
Sloane also shares Cheri’s love of baking and aspires to be a pastry chef someday. Her signature dish is her lemon coconut milk flapjacks. Cheri said, “She just made them for my birthday, but we would eat them every day if we could!”
Sloane is also an amazing big sister to six-year-old Makenna who just started first grade at Culberston. “Makenna is a comedian,”

Mike laughed. “She has the most perfect comedic timing, and she keeps us laughing every single day.” Cheri said the best part is that Makenna’s not looking for the laugh, she’s just naturally funny.
Aside from her humor, Makenna loves ballet, cheerleading, tennis, playing with friends and creating her own science experiments. No doubt, she finds fun in everything she does!
The Leahy’s family dog is Philly, a 14-year-old Cavachon who they agree is the star of the show. Cheri and Mike adopted him in 2009 when they were living in North Carolina. “He’s a lovebug with such an easy-going personality,” Cheri said. “He absolutely adores the girls and follows them everywhere.”
Mike, Cheri and the girls love spending quality time together here in Newtown Square and on family vacations. They visit Cape May, NJ every summer where they ride bikes, spend time at Congress Hall, swim, shop and explore. “Mike and I have been going to Cape May every year since our first wedding anniversary,” Cheri explained. “We love continuing this tradition with our girls.” They also enjoy family time playing tennis, golf and taking road trips.
But no matter how far they go, their new home is their happy place. Cheri loves spending time in the kitchen, cooking and baking. “My specialty is taking a recipe and making it healthy,” she explained. “I love to substitute ingredients that will boost nutrients yet still taste delicious.” She said she’s created a recipe for
healthy twix bars and makes a walnut-crusted salmon that never disappoints. Mike’s favorite activity at home is serving up delicious meals from his smoker. “My favorite thing to make in the smoker is reverse-seared NY strip steak,” said Mike. Cheri and the girls agree but also say that anything Mike makes is delicious.
The Leahy’s may be fairly new to Newtown Square, but they are looking forward to getting involved in the community and volunteering their time and talents with the school district and extracurricular activities. We’re pretty sure their neighbors in the cul-de-sac are looking forward to being invited over for some of Mike’s famous strip steak and Cheri’s delicious sweet treats!
Cheri, Mike, Sloane and Makenna want to share this special message with our Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors: “We are grateful. Thank you for welcoming us in a way that has made our transition to a new state and a new community seamless.”

Social Media as a
to reach out to others to let those who would want to know about the passing, know. Of course, as with most things related to social media, it can be difficult to traverse.
One aspect is the return to approaching death as a more public social event, as it had been throughout history until more recent times. When families all lived in close proximity to each other, learning of a death was almost instantaneous. As people started to move farther apart, newspaper obituaries and then personal phone calls became the norm. But in this age of social media the question becomes should you post about the passing of someone you know in an effort to get the word out to family, friends, coworkers or anyone who might care to know?
If it’s been decided that social media would be an appropriate means of announcement, keep the deceased and the family in mind when sharing the news, while keeping the information
idea to connect people with the funeral home’s online remembrance page, where they can find out when and where the viewing, funeral and interment will be, as well as leave memories and condolences for the family. Some people choose to trust the responsibility to another family member or a close friend to take care of social media posts on their behalf. When doing so, remember to discuss with them what you’re willing to share and let them know that they can ignore posts or questions that fall outside those boundaries, or are disrespectful of your wishes.
The bottom line is that since technology is such a part of our lives, using social media as a way of notification and information when a loved one has passed is perfectly acceptable these days. If doing so works for you, embrace it and keep these tips in mind. N S

SEPTEMBER STUDENT OF THE MONTH
The September Casey’s Public House Student of the Month is Grace Yacobe, who received a Certificate of Achievement and a $25 gift card from Casey’s Public House, our Sponsor of this program. Grace is a 10th grade honor student from the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur (ND), who also works as a student ambassador, helping the admissions team with tours, shadow days and Open Houses. She is also the President of the Play It Forward Club and a STEM Scholar.
After winning 1st place in the tri-state biology competition, Grace was one of 13 students who presented their research
at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Sciences state meet at Penn State, where she achieved a perfect score and was awarded a Director’s Award for Biology. Then Grace entered the Delaware Valley Science Fair, which included over 700 projects by middle and high school students representing 10 regions from across the state, and was awarded a bronze medal as the 3rd place overall winner for 9th grade students. This earned her an all-expense-paid trip to the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Atlanta, GA, with students from over 80 countries. Her research project examined the creation of a non-invasive method to efficiently detect lung conditions, one of the world’s leading causes of death.
Along with her high achievements academically, Grace also enjoys playing on ND’s field hockey and swimming teams, and playing the piano and violin in their concert orchestra. Grace enjoys helping in the kitchen and with fundraising efforts at her church. In fact, she helped to raise over $18,000 for COVID relief during the pandemic. When she has free time, Grace enjoys drawing, reading and baking, as well as writing – in particular poetry which has been featured in the school’s magazine. She’d like to go into the field of neuroscience when she’s older, and lives by her mother’s motto, “Don’t stop and never give up!”
Grace, your Marple Newtown Friends & Neighbors congratulate you on receiving this award, and on your numerous accomplishments. Thanks for sharing your time and talents with so many! N S

Lawn
Late summer to early fall is the best time to plant a new lawn, patch bare areas or overseed your current lawn, because grass seed needs regular irrigation, especially until it begins to germinate. Fall is actually a better time of year for this growth cycle because in the spring and summer your new seed must contend with warm to hot days.
Plants, trees, shrubs
First, remove all overgrown or dead plants, trees and shrubs. Many plants lose their leaves during the fall, so be extra careful not to get rid of something that will come back again in the spring. Keeping your landscape borders crisp and clean will add a sense of order to your landscape design, and makes the entire landscape look well maintained and appear inviting.
When planting new items, be sure to plant early enough in the fall for the plant’s root system to become established (at least six weeks before the first frost). Before winter sets in, check your newly planted items weekly and water them if dry. A thick layer of mulch helps to protect these newbies during periods of freezing and thawing.
Cover crops
You don’t have to be a farmer to grow a cover crop. For instance, if you grow warm-season vegetables and/or annuals that tradi-
tionally die in the winter, you can improve the soil by planting a grain or legume. Doing so retains the nutrients in the soil and helps keep it from eroding, as well as alleviating soil compaction.
Plant your cover crop right after the last of your vegetables or annuals stop producing to give them a head start before the cooler weather. Try planting alfalfa, Austrian winter peas, crimson clover, barley, oats or winter wheat/rye.
Bulbs, perennials
Bulbs such as daffodils, hyacinths, crocuses, irises and tulips are programmed to grow foliage and bloom after an extended cold period. They should be planted when the weather is cool in the fall and before the first hard frost. Fall planting is only for a patient gardener, but the reward in the spring will be well worth the wait.
When looking for something new to plant, perennials are your best choice, because you can plant them once and they’ll return year after year. Some perennials even keep their leaves during the winter, which adds extra color to a winter garden.
Hardscape and lighting
Adding a new visual element to your garden, like creating wide, geometric paths with decorative pavers in warm colors, will draw the eye to the front of your house. Firepits, patios, decks, rocks/ boulders, retaining walls and paths are also great to add visual interest to your landscape. Lighting can add elegance, beauty and interest, as well as safety to your garden. N S

DriGanic Carpet
The summer is coming to a close for this year, and here are a few things to think about in order to protect your carpets, floors and furniture:
Folks with pools, especially those that are located within close proximity to the home, need to protect all of the flooring and other surfaces, not only from the chlorine that can get tracked in by your family, friends and pets, but also from the resulting dirt and grime.
Even those with salt water pools need to be cautious of the water making it into the home. Either type can have adverse effects on tile, hardwoods, carpeting, grout and upholstery. Floor mats placed both inside and outside of the access door is your best and first line defense. It is much less expensive to replace those mats or throw rugs as needed rather than have to replace your entire rug/ carpet or other flooring.
When an unexpected mishap does occur, hiring a well respected, professional service company to clean those surfaces can usually bring them back to their customary condition. Vacuuming your rugs and carpets and cleaning your other flooring on a regular basis, will also help to ensure that a small stain or issue doesn’t become something more substantial, which can turn into something expensive to fix.
Now that the summer heat is lessening and giving homeowners a bit of a break, allowing them to let the fresh air in, it is vital to vacuum carpets at least a few times a week and furniture weekly. If you have high foot traffic or other conditions that require a higher level of attention, daily cleaning may be more in line for your situation. By keeping up with this flooring and surface “maintenance,” you will be able to keep the dust, polen and soil from gaining a hold on your surfaces.
These tips will also help prevent micro-scratches in your carpet, which reflect light differently than a non damaged fiber, thus giving you that “dirty traffic lane” even when the surface is clean. Debris can also cause scratches in wood surfaces so be mindful to keep them clean as well. Always remember, annual and semi annual professional cleaning, especially for those active households, usually doubles the life of your carpets/rugs, flooring and upholstery. N S

MOSTARDI NURSERY
Mostardi Nursery is a family-owned business in Newtown Square that has been serving our growing community since 1976. If you have visited their location on West Chester Pike, you know that Mostardi’s is your resource for all kinds of outdoor and indoor plants, trees, shrubbery, seasonal decor, gardening tools and more. But did you know that dedicated gardeners, as well as novice homeowners, also depend on Mostardi’s for expert advice in helping them be successful with their home gardening and landscaping projects?
Owner Steve Mostardi is proud of his family’s long-standing reputation of offering excellent customer service, superior quality and a large selection of items that his customers have come to expect. “My parents originally opened their landscape business on this property,” explained Steve. “Over the years, they built greenhouses and shifted to growing and selling plants.” Steve said that the success of that end of the business led them to pivot once again, build a parking lot, a retail store and open the property to consumer sales of plants, decor and supplies.
Steve’s gardening roots trace back to his grandfather, who was an estate gardener on the Main Line. Steve not only grew up in the family business, but he also trained at the Barnes Foundation
Arboretum and studied Horticulture at Temple University. He served as the President of the Horticultural Research Institute and now serves as Chairman of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Gold Medal Plant Award Committee.
Over the years, the Mostardi Nursery team has grown beyond the Mostardi family. “My wife, two sons and my sister all work with me,” explained Steve. “But we also have over 20 dedicated and knowledgeable employees to serve our customer’s needs.” They are proud to be members of the Pennsylvania and American Nursery and Landscape Association, as well as both the Pennsylvania and the American Horticultural Societies.
As an independent garden center, Mostardi’s mission is to provide you with plants, lawn and garden products, and friendly service that goes above and beyond your expectations. “We offer a unique service that you won’t find in those big-box stores,” said Steve. “We are here to help you determine what’s best for your home, advise you on the best time to plant and even help you diagnose any problems you’re having with your plant’s health.” Mostardi Nursery even has a plant pharmacy department with products designed for animal repellents, weed control and lawn care.
Another difference that sets Mostardi Nursery apart is its dedication and generosity toward our community. They partner with Newtown Square In Bloom, Newtown Township Parks and Recreation, the Shade Tree Commission and the Trails and Greenways Committee to source trees, grow plants and flowers and to offer them at cost to these organizations. They also donate mulch and materials used to plant and install displays throughout Newtown Square.
Just take a look around at all the beautiful hanging baskets lining West Chester Pike and the colorful display of flowers in St. Albans Circle. Perhaps you’ve noticed new trees planted along the Goshen Road trail and Newtown Street Road. Newtown Township is fortunate to have Steve Mostardi and his team to thank for their guidance, generosity and commitment to improving the appearance of our neighborhoods.
Now that the fall season is upon us, it’s an ideal time to stop by for pumpkins, corn stalks, straw and mums. Steve said that fall is also

a perfect time to do your landscape planting. “Planting trees and shrubs in the fall allows their root systems to adapt and acclimate more easily,” he explained. Steve also said that fall is a great time to take advantage of special pricing and seasonal deals. Mostardi Nursery is open year-round for all your gardening and seasonal decor needs. Their hours are Monday through Saturday 9:00am–5:30pm, and Sunday 10am–5pm. Mostardi’s is located at 4033 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square. Ratifying the U.S. Constitution
by Doug Humes
Each September we recognize Constitution Day on September 17th, to celebrate the U.S. Constitution. Over four months in 1787, 12 of the 13 states elected 74 delegates, of which 55 attended the convention, and 39 signed the final document on September 17, 1787. But there was still a long way to go until it became effective, with no assurance that would happen. George Washington, remarked upon signing it, “Should the States reject this excellent Constitution, the probability is, an opportunity will never again offer to cancel another in peace—the next will be drawn in blood.”
The first state to ratify the Constitution was our neighbor, the “First State” Marple Historical Society
The “State House” (now known as Independence Hall) as it appeared in 1788
General Anthony Wayne, delegate from Chester County, also first General of the American Army

The document was submitted to the U.S. Congress of the Confederation, which on September 28th recommended submitting it to the states for approval. If nine states voted to ratify

the document, then it would become effective. Neighboring Delaware was the first to do so, voting unanimously to approve it on December 7th, giving them permanent bragging rights as the “First State.”
Pennsylvania’s 69 delegates went into session in November at the Pennsylvania State House, the same location where the Constitution was created and debated by the national delegates. There was far more opposition to the document as written. The Anti-Federalists feared a powerful centralized government, and the lack of a Bill of Rights. Three of the Pennsylvania delegates had also sat at the Constitutional Convention, and one of them, James Wilson, gave the most forceful arguments in its favor. On December 12, 1787, Pennsylvania voted 46-23 to approve the document. Newtown was then part of Chester County, and its delegate, General Anthony Wayne, voted in favor. Voting nay: Abraham Lincoln of Berks County, the great-great uncle of our 16th president.
How should we celebrate the day? Like our delegates did! They, the state government officers, the faculty of the university and the militia marched to the courthouse and read the ratification document to the assembled citizens; the uniformed militia fired off a “federal salute” and the bells of Christ Church were rung. At three o’clock they repaired to Mr. Epple’s Tavern. At least 13 toasts were made, including “May the flame kindled on the Altar of Liberty in America, lead the nations of the world to a knowledge of their

rights and to the means of recovering them.” The remainder of the day “was spent in mutual congratulations upon the happy prospect of enjoying, once more, order, justice and good government in the United States.”

Identity Theft Alert
Most people have heard of high profile cyberattacks or the hacking of companies and individuals in the news. Unfortunately it can and does happen to just about anyone.
It is vital to be able to recognize the common signs to look for in these types of situations, particularly where IRS notifications are concerned. IRS publications and updates list several tell-tale signs of identity theft to watch out for.
The IRS warns that if you experience any of the following situations, you may be a victim of identity theft:
• You receive a text, call or email notice about a return you didn’t file
• An online account was created in your name that you’re unaware of
• You receive tax transcripts you did not request
• The IRS sends records indicating earned wages from an employer you don’t know
The IRS wants to make clear that it primarily communicates with taxpayers through letters and mailed notices. RARELY does the IRS call a taxpayer directly, and they NEVER communicate through text messages.
Taxpayers who have fallen victim to a scam or otherwise had their identity stolen can file an Identity Theft Affidavit with the IRS or speak with the Fraud Resolution Department, who can assist in identity recovery, by calling 800-908-4490. Prompt communication with the IRS is pivotal in identity theft cases.
According to a study by Verizon, more than a third of all data breaches in 2021 involved ‘Social Engineering’ which involves
digital con-artists. They seek to obtain sensitive information from people through impersonating someone official, hoping to convince an individual to reveal personal data. If successful, the hacker can access bank and investment accounts to drain funds. They could use your identification details to open credit cards and write phony checks, which could ultimately be billed to you. These traps are referred to as ‘phishing’ scams.
Some common indicators of phishing scams are as follows:
• Unexpected and untimely email, phone call or text message
• May include a fake invoice from a company you currently are or have done business with
• Attention-grabbing emails claiming that you’ve won a prize or are being charged with a crime
• Requests to provide private information
It’s important to visually check the sender’s email address to be sure it's correct and free from spelling errors. Hackers craft email addresses that look very similar to a familiar address. Consider calling or texting the sender to verify if the communication is legitimate. Delete suspicious emails immediately and never reveal personal information to unknown parties. If you are unsure if an email or text message is legitimate, treat it as a fake. The damage identity theft and data breaches can do to individuals and companies can be catastrophic and result in bankruptcy or costly lawsuits. N S

Congratulations, Chris Newell: From Little League to the Big League
by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photo courtesy of John Newell
You may recall that our September, 2021 issue featured Newtown Square resident and former Newtown Edgmont Little League player Chris Newell. From the time Chris was a little boy, he dreamed of playing major league baseball. For Chris, that dream became a reality on July 19th when he was selected in the 13th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the MLB draft. But luck didn’t get Chris to where he is today. Work did. Chris has some advice for the younger generation of ballplayers who dream of making it to the big leagues. “Growing up, I wasn’t the best player on my team, but I worked hard to become one,” he said. “Study the game, listen to your coaches and stay hungry.”
Congratulations, Chris. Your Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors are proud of your accomplishments and look forward to watching your future unfold on the field. N S

Did you know that Newtown Square is home to a sprawling 240acre hidden gem on Bishop Hollow Rd? Perhaps you’ve noticed a few cows grazing in a pasture on your way to the Newtown Edgmont Little League fields. Or you may have seen the sign on the side of the road that says Garrett Williamson. But have you ever wondered what is tucked back around the curve and down that long driveway?
If you’re curious, you’ll have the opportunity to find out this fall as Garrett Williamson hosts its 2nd annual Harvest Festival. Everyone is invited to the family-friendly festivities from 11am–3pm on Saturday, October 15th (rain date: Sunday, October 16th).
The Harvest Festival will be an afternoon of fun for the whole family. Visitors will enjoy hayrides, pumpkin decorating, barn
tours, children's games and activities, garden tours and nature hikes. Pumpkins, vegetables and flowers will also be available for purchase at Urban Roots Farm. And if you’re hungry, there will be food trucks on hand and refreshments will also be available for purchase.
Last year’s Harvest Festival helped raise money for Garrett Williamson’s Agricultural Education Programs. Garrett Williamson is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide access to high-quality educational and recreational programs, offer families in need with financial support and foster loving connections within the community. All proceeds from this year’s event will directly benefit and support this mission.
Since the mid-1980s, the Garrett Williamson preserve has been home to the Garrett’s Way Childcare and Learning Center, serving infants six weeks of age through kindergarten. And every summer, there’s Camp Garrett, which serves youth ages 5 through 15 years. These award-winning programs take place on a beautiful 240-acre farm that raises alpacas, horses, sheep, chickens and goats. This land also grows crops of fruits, vegetables and flowers, and serves as an educational space for our community.
Giselle Cosentino is the Director of Community Initiatives at Garrett Williamson and is excited to invite the community to explore and enjoy this hidden gem. “Last year’s event attracted nearly 700 visitors to our beautiful property for an afternoon of hayrides, pumpkin decorating, animal interactions, straw maze adventures, children’s activities and nature hikes,” she said. “We will have all of those activities this year, plus music and food trucks! We hope you’ll join us for a quality family-friendly fall experience.”

Is Downsizing Right for You?
Have you been paying attention to the real estate market over the last year and thinking about making a change? Realtors are very accustomed these days to having conversations with homeowners about selling larger homes and buying something smaller. It can be extremely overwhelming to think about downsizing, but here are some thoughts about the benefits of choosing to make a move.
FOUR PROS TO DOWNSIZING
1. Freedom of time
Time is by far the most important asset we have in life. Have you ever thought about how much time you spend cleaning, both inside and out? Instead of spending precious moments taking care of all those projects around the home, this time could be spent enjoying your hobbies and relaxing with family and friends. Moving into a smaller place allows for new opportunities to do the things you love.
2. Safety and physical health improvements
Owning a larger home can cause more physical drain than you realize. Between mowing the lawn, cleaning the gutters, plowing snow, cleaning multiple bathrooms, etc., it all adds up to quite a bit of dangerous, physical labor on an ongoing basis. Additionally, a home with minimal or no steps can significantly decrease your fall risk. Hazards throughout the home are one of the leading causes of falls and hospitalizations.
3. Reduce expenses
Even if you don’t do any of the jobs mentioned above yourself, paying people to do them for you significantly adds to your expenses. Plus, the energy costs and property taxes will be less in a smaller home. The freedom of releasing these financial obligations can make a huge difference.
4. Release the chains of your stuff
The more space you have, the more likely you are to accumulate more stuff, much of which you probably don’t really need anymore. It can be very emotional to go through your stuff and donate or trash things, but it also gives you an opportunity to reassess what is truly important. It can actually be very freeing!
During these ongoing uncertain times, it’s scary to think about making a big change, looking toward “what’s next” instead of “what was.” However, your next move could be your next great adventure. N S

THE MARPLE NEWTOWN HIGH SCHOOL STEM ACADEMY: Building Skills to Become Future Leaders
by Holly Stupak

High school students all have their own set of unique strengths and skills. Some students shine on the stage whereas others prefer conducting lab experiments or coding software. Now, Marple Newtown students don't have to wait until college to pursue their academic interests at a deeper level. In September 2021, the Marple Newtown High School STEM Academy welcomed its first cohort of ninth graders (STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).
The Marple Newtown High School STEM Academy offers students a rigorous program to learn the skills they need to enhance their academic potential and prepare them to confidently contribute to social, civil and economic outcomes. “STEM teaches students critical thinking and innovation skills, which will help them tremendously in the workforce,” said MNHS Principal Mr. John Beltrante. “Our students in the program will be equipped to enter college and their future career with knowledge and tools for leadership.”
The program was in the works for several years and, under MNHS principal Mr. Beltrante’s leadership, it came to fruition last year. Mr. Beltrante said that soon after he took on the role as principal, the wheels were turning to create a rigorous, STEM-enriched program for Marple Newtown students. “There was a high level of interest from staff and faculty to put together this type of program and through a collaborative effort between our CCAC Counselors, the high school administration, the Teaching and Learning Team
along with the support of our superintendent, our plan was developed,” he said. “Despite challenges along the way, including the pandemic, the STEM Academy team persevered and welcomed our first class of the STEM Academy in the fall of 2021.”
What sets MNHS’s Stem Academy apart from other STEM programs in our area and in other parts of the country is that it is a school within a school. “Although the STEM Academy students are following a different program, we want the students to have the most normal high school experience as possible,” Mr. Beltrante explained. “We want to give them the new experience and push them, but make sure they are connected with the school and all it has to offer.”

Incoming freshmen in the program will get an in-depth look at each pathway through an Exploratory Studies course before choosing a pathway by their 10th-grade year.
MNHS STEM Academy students are required to take two Design Thinking courses as well as several other pathway-specific courses focused on employability skills and the use of design thinking to solve real-world problems. STEM students are also required to take six Advanced Placement courses during the course of their high school career. “Marple’s STEM program provides
more rigorous course options,” Mr. Beltrante said. “It is hands-on and challenging, which pushes students to develop independent thought and initiative to succeed.” Depending on the path they choose, there will be STEM-centered electives as well as internship opportunities.
An advisory council comprised of area business and industry professionals help steer the academy’s initiatives. The STEM team was able to bring in a variety of companies in the STEM field for a Career Carousel this past Spring. The students also traveled to Penn State Brandywine to participate in their STEM Pathways Program, an interactive program with faculty and other professionals.
Students in the inaugural cohort already started building the skills they need to become future leaders. From design challenges and business proposals to large presentations, these collaborative team-building experiences broadened their STEM education. “Seeing the level of interest and success the students had in the first year was inspiring,” said Mr. Beltrante.
The mission of Marple Newtown’s STEM Academy is to be a multifaceted, holistic experience that will shape students to be agents of positive change. “We hope to spark their curiosity, open their minds to the possibility of greatness and engage them in learning beyond their current visions of intellectual success,” Mr. Beltrante said. Celebrating Our Centenarians
by Sheila Turner-Hilliard
Albert Einstein once said, “Wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it.” That’s the thing about wisdom, it cannot be taught. We gain it over time, through our own life experiences and sage advice from those who know a thing or two about living a long, meaningful life.
Join us this month as we celebrate National Centenarian’s Day on September 22nd. It is a day set aside each year to celebrate and honor those who have reached the age of 100. The day was originally proclaimed as a time to partake in the rich history and wisdom shared by centenarians.
Over the years, as the human population and life expectancy have increased, so have the number of people who live to 100 years of age. According to the United Nations, there are over 570,000 centenarians in the world currently, with the United States being home to 97,000 of them.
When you stop to think about it, our current centenarians have lived and experienced more life-changing events than our future generations can ever imagine. These precious members of society have lived through the Great Depression, World Wars and Civil Wars. They’ve witnessed the invention of television, the golden age of radio, the innovation of air travel, all the way to the exploration of space and the digital revolution — they have lived and seen it all in one lifetime!
Listening to centenarians’ stories is always inspiring, and this is one day to be cherished by everyone to honor those among us who have seen a century go by.
One of our local centenarian’s is Marguerite Wagner. Marguerite was featured in Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine back in 2020 when she celebrated her 100th birthday. She and her husband, Gus moved to Newtown Square in 1980 and raised their two children here.
Marguerite is now 102 years old and lives with her daughter, Carol. When asked how she got to 102, she said, “How did I get here? One day at a time.” Marguerite has lived through many challenging times including the Great Depression, an automobile accident in 1931, World War II and most recently, the Covid-19 pandemic.
These days, Marguerite likes to spend time knitting and listening to classical music. She offered some advice for our younger generation. “Relax, don’t smoke and limit your alcohol intake,” she said. “Take a long walk and a short nap every single day. You can do it if you take it one day at a time.”

Roberta Taylor, a 20-year resident at Dunwoody Village will celebrate her 103rd birthday on December 29th. She was born in Newport, RI and moved to the area with her husband after World War II to raise their three children. After her husband passed away, Roberta decided to move to Dunwoody Village where she enjoys reading the newspaper and watching movies with her fellow residents.
Keeping her mind and her body active is the key to her long life. Roberta’s advice is, “You have to stay interested and participate in life,” she said. “Just keep you mind and your body moving.”
One of our most cherished Newtown Square residents, Mr. Eugene Vickers, was no stranger to our magazine. Mr. Vickers, a family man, and retired U.S. Navy Lieutenant recently passed away at 106 years old, surrounded by his loving family.
Eugene’s daughter, Barbara Vickers said that her father considered his faith and his family his number one priority. “As a family we ate dinner together, many times guessing what he had eaten for lunch that day. He made it a game and we loved to play along,” she recalled. “Dad helped us with our homework, played softball with us, read Bible stories and prayed with us before bed.”
Barbara said that her father was often asked what advice he had for young people with their lives ahead of them. “Proverbs 3:5,6 in the Bible was his answer: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path.”
Centenarians will always be with us at each point in history, and all the memories of the lives they’ve lived will continue to live on when passed down. N S

The Benefits of Solar Panels and Shingles
Now more than ever, home and business owners are looking to solar power as a way to reduce their electric bills, protect themselves from increasing utility rates and protect the environment by producing clean energy. However, most people know little to nothing about the process or the actual savings that comes with solar panel installation.
While most people are familiar with traditional solar roof panels, these days solar shingles are another option for home and business owners. Solar shingles work in a similar way to solar panels—they both absorb the sun’s rays, converting the light to thermal or electrical energy. However, solar shingles (also referred to as solar roof tiles) are made of slim photovoltaic (PV) sheets that can either overlay or replace the existing roof shingles. The number of tiles for a typical roof installation can lower utility bills by 40% to 70%. Of course, by adding more tiles, the energy output increases.
The first step would be to perform an analysis of the home and property, via satellite imagery and specialized software, to determine the best areas on the roof or ground to install a solar array. Then your installer will examine the existing electrical panel to determine how to run the wiring between the PV panels/shingles and the power inverter. After that, the specialist will work with a structural engineer, your insurance company and your municipality to secure the needed permits and begin sourcing the required materials.
After installation, when your PV system produces electricity, it is either used to power your property or it goes into the grid. That is where you can sell the excess Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs), which are generated by your new solar home, to power co-ops. Solar panels also increase the resale value of your home, plus you can take advantage of government rebates and tax credits.
Solar panels and shingles have long life spans, typically 20 years or more, but it does vary depending on the manufacturer and installation. Warranties also vary, so be sure to research all of these aspects of various solar panels/shingles you’re considering.
Harnessing the power of solar energy is not only good for the environment, it’s good for your wallet too. The best part is that spending less on electricity gives you more money to spend on the things you really enjoy. N S

by Mark E. Reitz, PT Penn Therapy Associates
Have you ever been to a Physical Therapist (PT) for treatment?
Most people haven’t and so do not know what to expect from their first visit. The experience should be consistent across the spectrum of care, but unfortunately it isn’t. As with doctors, dentists, chiropractors or any health care provider, the experiences can vary from wonderful to disappointing. Here’s what your first experience at a PT office should look like.
Whether you’ve been referred by a physician or dentist (yes dentists often refer patients for head, neck or facial pain like TMJ disorders), or you’re going without a referral, you should be given an extensive evaluation upon your first visit. This should be done in a private room so that your medical information is not being broadcast across a large room where others can hear your
conversation. It must also be performed by a licensed PT and not a PT assistant or other office personnel.
The evaluation should cover your overall medical history including medications, in addition to an extensive examination of the specific area of your body for which you are seeking care. Strength, range of motion, sensation and often balance should be assessed in addition to a hands-on exam, which should include palpation of painful areas. The PT should ask for the history and cause of the pain or dysfunction for which you wish to be treated. Next, there should be a discussion about YOUR treatment goals and a plan put in place. Only at this point should your actual treatment begin, and yes you should receive treatment in addition to your evaluation on your first visit.
Your PT should discuss the anatomy involved in your diagnosis and the reasons for the treatment rendered. They should teach you how and why you were hurt and how to prevent further injury or exacerbation of your present condition. Hands-on care, such as passive stretches, soft tissue release, trigger point massage or edema control techniques should be utilized on most if not all sessions. Detailed exercise instructions including demonstrations should be given to the patient, who should then demonstrate the exercises themselves. Every patient should go home with a home exercise program to supplement their PT session.
There are many practices in the area that offer this kind of oneon-one attention that you deserve. Ask questions when you call for your first appointment so you know what to expect and if it doesn’t sound like what you just read, move on and look elsewhere. You deserve the best and it is out there if you know what you’re looking for.
Publisher’s Note: I am even more of a believer in Penn Therapy now, after dealing with a case of “Frozen Shoulder.” When my right arm’s upward mobility stopped being so upward, my doctor knew my frozen shoulder was a simple case of “Adhesive Capsulitis.” When he recommended physical therapy to unlock it, I knew just who to call. Just ten visits of PT with Dr. Reitz, and his associate, Dr. Tainter, and I was back in full swing again. Thank you Penn Therapy! Bob Blaisse N S
