Dear Friends & Neighbors,

Here comes October, the first full month of Fall, ushered in by September’s nice weather weekends so filled with local events Bringing People Together. This month of October promises more mild weather, more beautiful colors, and many more choices for weekend events. (See our Calendar of local Events page 34.)

That is our magazine motto and our mission: “Bringing People Together.” The way we do it is by our monthly social-media-in-print, with this new October issue of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors in print, and also online at: www.NewtownSquareMag.com.

This October our Bringing People Together mission expands to serve friends and neighbors who live in the newer home sections of Newtown Square, Edgmont Township and parts of Willistown Township. Those homeowners will be receiving a surprise in their mailbox - the Premier issue of our new magazine: “Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors.”

Along with this month’s issue of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors, and its sister publication, Marple Friends & Neighbors (www.MarpleMag.com), our inaugural issue of Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors now brings our three Friends & Neighbors magazines into thousands of Marple / Newtown / Edgmont homes every month. Longtime readers like you, of course, know who we have to thank - our advertising Sponsors - who make it possible for us to have this hometown magazine mailed to your home for free. Our advertising Sponsors all share this in common with us: they understand hometown pride, and how important our community is to us. They also know how important the residents of Newtown Square are to the success of their business. So it’s no wonder their support of our mission, to be Bringing People Together through our hometown magazine, gets rewarded by you when choosing to do business locally, and whenever possible with our advertising Sponsors first.

I know that you’ll fall for this new Fall issue our advertising Sponsors, and our talented Content Coordinator, Sheila Turner-Hilliard, have made possible for us to enjoy this month.

Dear Residents, October is one of the most beautiful months of the year, filled with rich colors, crisp days and cool nights. It’s a time to stop and smell the pumpkins, from spiced lattes to homemade pies, before all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season kicks in.

This festive fall issue is filled with great stories and community news. First, you will meet Newtown Square native, Nick Ciarrocchi, whose simple approach to life and reaching goals will leave you inspired. Our business profile highlights Fante Flooring. When it comes to turning your house into a dream home, they’ve got you covered. Join us this month as we recognize and thank our school principals during National Principals Month and be sure to check out our jam-packed calendar of events!

We are always looking for more Newtown Square families, individuals and organizations to feature in our magazine. If you’d like to nominate someone, please email me at STurnerHilliard@BestVersionMedia.com.

Nick Ciarrochi: Taking Simple Steps to Achieve Big Success

This month we are excited to introduce you to Nick Ciarrocchi: A product of Newtown Square who is crushing big goals by literally putting one foot in front of the other. His story will inspire you to rethink what you think is impossible.

Nick moved to Newtown Square with his parents and younger sister when he was 8 years old. He went to Culbertson Elementary and Paxon Hollow Middle School. Nick graduated from Marple Newtown High School where he played football and lacrosse and worked part-time for his father’s residential masonry company.

“I learned a lot about discipline and hard work while playing sports,” Nick said. “Coaches Davey Jones and Kevin Merchant really made an impact on me and Coach D’Alonzo taught me how to have confidence on the field.”

After high school, Nick was accepted to Temple University, where he studied Engineering with a focus on Construction Management. Temple is also where Nick met his fiancée, Amanda. Amanda grew up in Lansdowne and studied at Temple’s Tyler School of Art, earning her degree in Visual Studies and Art Education. She is an art teacher at St. Eugene School in Primos and Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM) school in Darby. She, Nick and their 18-month-old son, Domenic, currently live in Drexel Hill but hope to buy a home of their own in Newtown Square in the near future.

We would like
thank Bradley Tree Experts for sponsoring this month’s Resident Feature.

Today, Nick works as a Project Engineer for Warfel Construction and is based out of their Paoli office. “Right now, we’re working on a major renovation at Dunwoody Village,” Nick said. “I am really enjoying managing a project in my own hometown.”

It was during Nick’s college years that he began practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. This martial art uses the principles of leverage, angles, pressure and timing, as well as knowledge of the human anatomy. The goal is to achieve a non-violent submission of one’s opponent. It’s a sport that requires equal parts physical and mental toughness. As time went on, Nick continued to practice Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at a local gym. That was until Covid hit, and his gym had to shut down. “I needed to stay active, so I began running every day,” Nick said. “I set goals for myself to stay motivated by adding one mile and one more day each week.” He started running three miles three days a week, then four miles four days a week until he was running every day.

Nick said he has always been physically active but admitted that running wasn’t an activity he particularly enjoyed. “Back in college, a few of my friends encouraged me to do the Broad Street Run,” he said. “At the time, I thought running 10 miles was a

stretch, but I did it and felt accomplished.” After that race, Nick began thinking that if he could do 10 miles, why not try for 26.2? He signed up for the Philadelphia Marathon, laced up his sneakers and hit the pavement. Nick started running early in the morning before he went to work so he could come home at night and enjoy time with his family. “Eventually, I decided that running would replace my Jiu Jitsu training because I could do it on my own time and around my family’s schedule,” Nick explained. “Someday, I would like to start practicing again, but I’ll wait until my son can go to the gym with me.”

With his firm commitment in place to run, Nick set out to accomplish what many think is impossible. He set his sights on the Pine Creek 50-mile race in September 2020 and placed 3rd overall. From there, Nick ran the Pine Creek 50-kilometer in 2021 with another impressive finish. Then in 2022, Nick decided it was time for the next challenge – the Zion 100-kilometer ultra-marathon in Utah.

“The cool thing about running these races is that my family can travel with me,” Nick said. So, in April 2022, Nick, Amanda, Domenic, Nick’s parents and his sister all made the trip to Zion in Utah. “We got to explore and enjoy a new place we had never

been.” Nick said that running also gives him the opportunity to connect with nature. “It’s one thing to admire the mountains and the woods from afar, but to run through them is a completely different and humbling experience.”

But Nick wasn’t done there. It was time for him to take on the Eastern States 100 this past August. The Eastern States is a 103mile trail race in the Wilds region of the Allegheny Plateau in north-central Pennsylvania. It’s a course that brings participants through extremely remote terrain with over 20,000 feet of climbing. It’s a historically tough race that sees less than half of the runners who start successfully cross the finish line. Nick’s family and a few of his friends were there to cheer him on once again. There was a plan to meet up with them at designated checkpoints, but with no cell service and no tracking devices, it was impossible to predict where he would be at what time. Nick said that late into the race, he met up with his friend, Eric, who had planned to run 17 miles with him. “Eric was supposed to run 17 miles but ended up running 40!” Then at mile 75, Nick took a misstep and sprained his ankle. “I needed Eric’s support and encouragement to finish. Needless to say, I owe him a lot!”

Crossing the finish line was very special for Nick. “Having my family there and watching my son run towards me with the biggest smile on his face was overwhelming,” he recalled. “Domenic is the reason I continue to challenge myself. I want my son to see that you can achieve and accomplish things that seem unachievable as long as you are disciplined and consistent in your pursuit.”

And, as you may have guessed, Nick isn’t planning on slowing down anytime soon. He is going to run the Philadelphia Marathon again next month and is anxiously waiting to hear if his lottery number will be selected to run the Boston Marathon in April 2023. “I am excited about these races, but I really have my heart set on the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run,” he said. “It’s the ultimate endurance trail race through the mountains in California.”

Nick is often asked about his training routine and how he mentally and physically prepares for races. “Honestly, I don’t follow a set plan,” he explained. “My philosophy is simple and can be applied to just about anything in life: Don’t overcomplicate things, because what you think is impossible is not. Wake up every morning and take a step in the direction you want to go, even if it’s just one small step. Take responsibility for your actions; eventually, you will achieve more than you ever dreamed possible.”

Thank you, Nick, for sharing your inspirational story and words of encouragement. Your Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors are looking forward to following your adventurous footsteps.

William is an 11th grade Honors student at Marple Newtown High School where he plays the trombone, tuba and bass drum in the Tiger Marching Band, Jazz Band and DrumLine. As a member of the Tri-M Honor Society, which focuses on creating future leaders in music education and music advocacy,

William considers music to be one of his main interests at school, as well as a personal hobby.

As a Boy Scout with Troop 122 in Broomall, William was recently awarded the Rank of Eagle Scout for his project building and installing Cedar Bluebird houses in the Newtown Meadow Preserve. He enjoys helping out with his Troop’s activities and often volunteers weekends at Camp Musser and Resica Falls Scout Reservations.

In fact, for the past two summers William has been on staff as a counselor at the Resica Falls Scout Reservation in East Stroudsburg, to help teach merit badges to scouts from all over the east coast. He is a member of the Order of the Arrow (OA), known as the National Honor Society for scouting and enjoys volunteering at induction ceremonies for new OA members. He also takes the time to help out within the community, taking part in area clean-up projects, including helping to identify and control invasive species.

William is hoping to attend Drexel or West Chester University in two years, studying computer science and IT. In his free time, William enjoys camping, golf, playing video games and teaching his pet Cockatiel to speak!

HVAC Challenges

When things go wrong with your HVAC system, it can be challenging to determine the best approach. You don’t want to ignore problems, but you also don’t want to call in a professional for something you can handle on your own. As the owner and user of your HVAC equipment, you are in a position to compare how it’s acting up versus how it should behave. Here are some tips for approaching HVAC issues to overcome challenges.

Identify the Problem: Look for Patterns

One of the first steps in solving a problem is identifying it. When it comes to your HVAC equipment, you live with it on an ongoing basis. You know how it operates when everything in your home is comfortable and functioning. Use this baseline knowledge to find patterns that could indicate issues. For example, your cooling might be sufficient on most days but lacking when the temperature is extreme. If this has always been the case, you can consider upgrading to a larger system. If this is a recent issue, it may indicate a problem with the unit’s performance. Knowledge of the baseline will help you and an HVAC technician determine what the next step should be.

Pay Attention to How You Use Your System

Do you crank up your heating or cooling to the max and leave it there when you’re not at home? Or do you constantly adjust the temperature, turning it up and down to ensure you’re perfectly comfortable at all times? Depending on how you use your HVAC system, certain issues are more likely. This information is useful for a technician reviewing your system as it paints a picture of the conditions that your equipment experiences through use.

Look for Easy Solutions First

When things go wrong, it can be tempting to assume the worst and overreact. Sometimes the best solution is the simplest. Review basic maintenance items first. If you notice that your heating isn’t what it should be or the airflow through your grilles is slow, look at your filter. Are you overdue on its replacement? If your system isn’t responding to temperature changes, inspect your thermostat to see if there are loose wires or if it needs to be replaced.

Know When to Call for Help

Knowing when to call for professional help is key. The more you know about your equipment, the easier it will be for you to judge whether you have a small problem that can wait or whether to call for help immediately. Ongoing maintenance and open communication with the right HVAC professionals will help you get there.

Protect Your Outdoor Faucets From the Cold

As we move into the cooler weather, the leaves start to fall and the temps start to drop. Quite often, one thing that is overlooked is preparing the outdoor faucets for the winter. When water freezes, it expands and can split through pipes, which can cause thousands of dollars of damage from water-soaked walls, ceilings and floors to even worse outcomes. It just makes sense to take some time to prevent this from happening.

While there are specialty outdoor faucets that are marketed as “freeze-proof,” there is no guarantee that these faucets will not freeze in the coldest weather. While these types of faucets are the best and most popular outdoor faucets to have, it’s still wise to prepare them for winter.

No matter the outdoor spigot type, freeze-proof or not, it is very important to remove any hoses, splitters or other fitting that is screwed onto the faucet, before winter sets in. Not doing so will make it much more likely that the faucet will freeze. This is a task where the timing can be critical, as well as problematic if you continue to utilize your outdoor water until the very point that the

freezing weather begins. It’s a much better idea to anticipate the first freeze by disconnecting hoses early. Even one night of freezing weather can cause a break in the pipes.

The next step is to shut off the upstream water supply valve inside the house, and open up the faucet on the outside to drain any residual water. It’s important to keep the faucet open to allow every bit of the water to escape, and eventually the water should stop. If it does not stop and continues to drip, then that means the inside shut-off valve is faulty and needs to be replaced.

An outdoor faucet protector, which is a foam faucet cover available at hardware and home stores, offers an additional layer of protection to freeze-proof your faucet and pipes. You can also buy foam insulation to cover any exposed plumbing that’s connected to the outdoor faucet, as an extra precaution.

These few simple steps can save you some headaches when the temperatures drop below freezing. It can also make things a lot easier in the spring when you go to turn the outdoor faucets back on. N S

Bringing People Together

Bringing People Together

Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors

I didn’t think of it. I wish I had. No, it was an advertising Sponsor who once candidly shared when I asked why they wanted to advertise in our hometown magazine. They said, “Bob, we read every new issue from cover to cover on the day it arrives in the mail. We want to be seen at the party.”

How insightful! Yes, I suppose it’s like a party going on. After all, the mission and motto of our magazine is: “Bringing People Together.” We do it through our unique brand of social-media-inprint. which creates that feeling of belonging in the community by the one or two degrees of separation readers have with almost every feel-good feature which inspires hometown pride. That belonging to something bigger feels good, like being “at the party,” which many readers often tell me is not just reading our magazine, but in the feeling they get as soon as a new issue arrives. The mail highlight of the month has the party on again in print, and online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com.

The success of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors, and our sister publication Marple Friends & Neighbors, in hosting the party which has been Bringing People Together now for more than four years, is what inspired me and our advertising Sponsors to expand the party’s guest list. Because a good party is always a better party,

when it's a bigger party. This month the party gets bigger with the first issue launch of our third magazine, Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors.

We often hear our area called: “Marple Newtown.” And sometimes we hear Newtown Edgmont. Let me welcome our Edgmont friends and neighbors to the party, which now is a total combined home delivery of our three Friends & Neighbors magazines into thousands of homes in the Marple Newtown Edgmont communities.

Our advertising Sponsors are the heroes of the party, the business leaders Bringing People Together through our hometown magazines. We have them to thank. But I have to also thank our Reader Leaders who are always on the lookout, helping to bring new advertising Sponsors to the party.

Any reader of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors in print or online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com, can be a Reader Leader by telling our advertising Sponsors how thankful they are for their investment in our community that makes our hometown magazine possible. Please, pick a few advertising Sponsors, call them or stop in to thank them for their leadership.

Your Reader Leadership can also help grow our magazine page count so we can publish more local features. Here’s how: think about the businesses in the area that you trust. Recommend that they should be at the party which is Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors. Invite them to Sponsor the residents of Newtown Square. If your Reader Leadership brings in a new advertiser, I’ll be asking if we can share your name with readers, and I’ll ask you to select a Newtown Square resident to be featured on the cover of an upcoming issue of our hometown magazine.

The steps to becoming a Reader Leader are on the next page. Think about extending your personal invitation to a business you know, to come join the party that’s Bringing People Together in our community.

Turning Houses into Dream Homes

Choosing a floor can seem like an overwhelming task when faced with all the materials and designs you have to choose from. Luckily, Fante Flooring in Newtown Square has you covered. Not only do they have a wide selection of flooring you won’t find anywhere else, owner Eric Fante takes immense pride in seeing the finished products in his customers’ homes.

Eric opened Fante Flooring’s Newtown Square location in 2016, but the company’s roots started long before that in South Philadelphia. Eric’s great-grandfather, Thomas Fante, came to the United States from Italy in 1901, where he opened up and ran a successful furniture business. His son Dominic, Eric's grandfather, worked alongside his father and was particularly interested and knowledgeable in the area of flooring. They opened Fante Flooring in 1946. The business grew and by the 1970s Dominic had turned the store into a beautiful showroom.

Eric grew up in South Philadelphia in the 1970s and spent a lot of his childhood helping his dad, Ron, and grandfather in the family business. Eric remembers being a young boy and learning the many aspects of running a flooring business from both his father and grandfather. “I started as a young kid putting tools away and sweeping the floors,” explained Eric. “Then as a teenager

and young adult I took on more responsibilities and learned how to take measurements and install floors. They showed me how important it is to be a helper.”

Eventually Eric took over running the business and since 2001 he has been the owner and operator of Fante Flooring. Ron passed away in 2011, but Eric said his legacy is in great hands. His family’s traditions and techniques are what helped him run the store successfully. “My dad taught me everything in both business and life,” said Eric. “From him I learned the business from the ground up and how important it is to pay attention to all the little details. They are the most important aspects of being a business owner.”

Over the years as the business grew, Eric was serving more customers outside of the city. Traveling frequently to the Philadelphia suburbs and the Mainline prompted Eric to move the location to Newtown Square in 2016. Located where Route 3 and 252 intersect, the 4000 square foot showroom has a large selection of designer floors that aren’t always found in large retail stores.

From decorator fine hardwoods, the latest carpeting or tile woods and a vast array of modern engineered solutions, Fante Flooring offers a variety of flooring types that can turn houses into dream homes. Eric said he created the showroom so that customers can see the best and widest variety of flooring types all in one place. Shortly after Eric moved his business to Newtown Square, he and his wife Vera decided to find their forever home here in Marple Newtown. They’d been living in Ridley Park for more than a decade but always admired the family friendly neighborhoods in our area. In 2018 they found the perfect home in Broomall on a street with more than 30 kids. Vera is a fifth grade teacher at St. Anastasia School, where all three of their children attended school. Eric’s oldest son is now a freshman at Marple Newtown High School. “It’s so great to be part of this community both in business and in life,” Eric said fondly.

Eric spends his days in the showroom talking with his customers and walking them through the process of selecting, designing and installing high quality beautiful floors. For customers who can’t come into the showroom, Fante offers a showroom on wheels. Eric can bring the floor samples directly to customers' homes so they’re able to have a look at flooring under their own lighting to decide what works.

If you are ready to upgrade one or more rooms throughout your home, Fante Flooring has you covered. Call them today at 610-232-7080 or visit the showroom at 39 South Newtown Street Road (PA Rt 252) in Newtown Square. N S

What sets Fante Flooring apart from the big box stores is Eric’s personal approach and attention to detail that he takes very seriously. “ I sleep better knowing a job went smoothly,” said Eric. “Many customers become friends, so I’m elated seeing them happy with the finished product.” Eric also employs sub-contractors that have worked for him for 15 years. “I thank them every day because they help keep my business alive,” he said, proudly.

It’s so great to be part of this community both in business and in life.

Where do you begin to tell the history of Castle Rock, once one of the most prominent places in Edgmont Township? Millions of years ago when the rock formation thrust above the surface? 12,000 years ago, when the first Native Americans set eyes on the formation jutting out of the earth perhaps 400 feet? Do we start with the early settlers of Edgmont who christened it with the name “Castle Rock” because it reminded them of English castles? Perhaps the tale of Sandy Flash, the Highwayman of Castle Rock? Though Sandy Flash is fictitious, his story is based upon an actual bandit, James Fitzpatrick, who terrorized the community during the American Revolution, and was ultimately captured at a farmhouse nearby.

The rock formation was an early tourist destination, so much so that the Philadelphia and West Chester Traction Company built a trolley line from 63rd Street out to an amusement park that they created at Castle Rock. A 1902 news article described what was there: “The cave and the rocks which were the hiding places

The real story of James Fitzpatrick and his cave at Castle Rock

and fortifications of Fitzpatrick during the long period of his depredations in the Revolutionary War have been made easy of access by shaded walks and are visited by thousands of curious persons. Fishing, dancing, merry go-rounds, shuffle boards and other games are delighting visitors. The Park has a fine restaurant. It is an enjoyable ride on the Philadelphia and West Chester trolley line to Castle Rock.”

The outcropping, now about 325 feet in elevation, was taller in the past. The trolley company blasted the top of the formation for ballast to use in extending the line to West Chester. When the amusement park closed, a church group continued to hold picnics

and religious services at the Rock. WWI veterans began camping there to escape from the city, and erected small camp buildings. A developer bought the land in the 1920s and began building a model community, by fits and starts as the country entered the Great Depression.

The tight-knit community of Castle Rock continues today. The actual rock formation exists but no longer dominates the landscape. It is on private property and so not accessible other than to view it from Castle Rock Road. There are many chapters to its history – and in future issues we will be exploring Castle Rock and the other stories connected with the 300+ years of history of Edgmont Township.

Vent-Free Gas Fireplace Facts

Vent-free appliances are similar to other space-heating and hearth products, with one exception – they don’t have a vent. There is a large misconception when it comes to vent-free gas, but the truth is there are many valuable benefits to this type of heating. Today, vent-free gas appliances include heaters, fireplaces, fireplace inserts, stoves and log sets, and every year manufacturers introduce new designs and styles of vent-free products. Converting your wood-burning fireplace to a vent-free gas log set eliminates the hassle and mess of hauling in wood, disposing of ashes, lighting uncooperative kindling, tending the fire and guarding against stray embers.

Additionally, installation costs of vent-free products are up to 60 percent less than the cost of installing vented heating appliances, as there is no need to cut through exterior walls or to create an expensive chimney or vent system. Any of the 62 million homes that are supplied with natural or propane gas can inexpensively have a professional install a vent-free heater, fireplace, stove or log set. A certified installer familiar with vent-free products and local building codes can help you choose the right-sized product for your home and install it properly within an hour.

The most common myth about vent-free gas heat is that they are unsafe. First, vent-free appliances feature an automatic safety shutoff device (Oxygen Detection System or ODS). The ODS turns off the gas in case of a malfunction. Second, with 17 million units

installed in the U.S. alone since 1980, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has stated that it is not aware of any documented incident in the CPSC In-Depth Investigation (IDI) database of fatal carbon monoxide poisoning associated with an ODS-equipped vent-free gas heating product. Vent-free gas heaters, fireplaces, stoves and log sets meet all of the most relevant indoor air quality standards and guidelines and have an outstanding safety record.

In addition, in 1996 the Vent-Free Gas Products Alliance, members of GAMA, an Association of Appliance and Equipment Manufacturers, commissioned an independent research project to be conducted by the American Gas Association Research Division (AGAR). The researchers concluded that “vent-free gas heating products performed well within nationally recognized guidelines for indoor air quality. This research proves that vent-free gas heating products meet applicable emissions requirements even when used over extended time periods, among sensitive populations, and with units whose maximum heat output exceeds the requirements of the space.” This landmark research has been extensively peer-reviewed and has served as the basis for acceptance of vent-free gas products by national code groups and state regulatory agencies.

Vent-free gas heating has been proven time and again as a safe option, and for many people it is a cost-efficient and hassle-free alternative to other heating options. N S

Marple Township Community Days Fall Festival

Celebrate fall by coming out to Marple Community Days Fall Festival and Fireworks on Saturday, October 15. Not only will it be a fun day of food and entertainment, but the proceeds will also be donated to the Veterans Park Memorial Park and Playground! Enjoy retail vendors, food trucks, bounce houses, music and much more. Finish off the evening with a fireworks display!

A portion of Lawrence Rd will be closed in front of Veterans Memorial Park from noon–dusk so that attendees can shop local retailers, visit arts and crafts tables and enjoy delicious food from an array of food trucks. Parents may purchase wristbands for children so that they may enjoy a variety of activities for one price!

To help put this event together, Marple Township enlisted the help of JoLina Events, a non-profit event company that successfully organized the Marple Township Easter Egg Hunt back in April at Veterans Memorial Park! The township was so impressed with the event, they enlisted the company’s help again for Marple Community Day.

Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine’s mission is Bringing People Together, and Marple Community Day is the perfect way to celebrate bringing us all together. Hope to see you there! For more information, visit www.MarpleTwp.com. N S

Everyone these days seems to have a phone full of photos and videos. Many people also enjoy the ease of having a virtual notebook on their phone, for when they need to jot down something that they’ve seen or heard. But have you ever thought about how helpful having this ‘virtual history’ could be when you have a legal issue or need to prove something in court?

It’s very important to remember to take photos, videos and notes while things are happening in our lives, both good and maybe not so good. Just like keeping a journal or diary, evidence recorded as things are happening can be some of the strongest evidence in court.

The fact is that by the time something turns into a legal issue, it is usually already in the works long before we consult with an attorney and take legal action. Attorneys truly appreciate it when a client pulls out a pic, video or other unambiguous proof taken at the time in question.

Social media is definitely a double-edged sword in countless ways. It can be used against you or it can help you with an issue that you’re looking into. It can be used as evidence both for you or for the other side, so be extremely careful when posting to social media.

If you come across something pertinent to a case that you’re involved in online or on social media, take a screenshot of it and text or email it to your attorney. It absolutely can be used in court and can often be some of the most impactful evidence. Attorneys have been quite successful in court for their clients with the use of social media screenshots, as well as printouts of text messages. Our phones and computers have the ability to memorialize something, as it happens, and timestamp it, including a person's statements and activity. When in doubt, take the photo, screenshot, video or notes to be on the safe side. You absolutely miss out on the benefit of any evidence you don’t record and keep, just in case. N S

When a home changes ownership from the multi-decade original owner to a new, young family with a small child, the time comes to rehab for another generation. Phase 1 started on the exterior, even before waterproofing the basement den/laundry room. Work done by the previous owner prior to selling the home, such as plumbing and roofing, was not adequate. And what was that smell? The adjacent crawl space consisted of a dirt floor, with miscellaneous trash scattered about. Clean-out with a proper vapor barrier helped significantly, but the smell remained.

Upgrading the gutters and lawn grading kept the water away from the foundation walls. Two water tight/thermal basement windows with screen vents were added to let fresh air circulate, making an immediate improvement. Even with these comprehensive steps, letting their one year old to play on the tile/carpet floor while they were doing laundry still didn’t seem advisable… and that smell. Phase 2 was to move on with a new ‘empty space’ at the lower level. Demolition of the walls, insulation, flooring and ceiling was

long overdue after 45+ years. Surprisingly, the basement walls, unlike the raw stone crawl space walls, were in very good condition. So where was that nasty smell emanating from?

The drop ceiling was demolished in the den area and no issues were found. However when the paneled ceiling was removed, acorns came pouring down, revealing a squirrel’s “nut stash” for winter. Without a complete demo and clean out, as well as a thorough cleaning of the floor into the new French drain and sump pump, this odor wouldn’t have been discovered and would have prevented a successful basement remodel.

Getting the enthusiastic owners involved and emphasizing the importance of routine exterior maintenance helped in giving the homeowners confidence to get full use out of all three stories of their stone colonial. A multi-section, open space offered them a healthy, well lit area with multiple functions, the best of which was a safe play area for the baby. Happy family, plenty of smiles and equity growth too - accomplished! N S

Take the Leap: How Dance Fosters Self-Confidence

There are moments in life when we are expected to step outside of our comfort zone and rise to the challenge. Imagine that you applied for your dream job and were asked to come in for an interview, or you received a callback after auditioning for a role in a musical. An important life skill for moments like these is confidence.

Confidence can be defined as a feeling of self-assurance that occurs from the appreciation of one’s own abilities or qualities. Each one of us deserves to move through life with conviction in what we are truly capable of. While putting ourselves out there isn’t supposed to be easy or comfortable, doing things that sometimes scare us is key to achieving personal growth. Picture the things you can achieve if you just take the leap! Confidence impacts our happiness, success and well-being, and helps shape the way we carry ourselves. The activities we engage in, as well as the relationships we foster with ourselves and others, play a large role in building our confidence.

Dance is a prime example of a confidence-boosting activity – it takes guts to dance in front of others! Whether you’re dancing in the presence of a dance teacher, other students or you’re performing in front of an audience, the more your dancing skills grow, your self-confidence will follow. Because dance provides a space where we are encouraged to believe in ourselves, try our best, and set goals and accomplish them, we learn about the importance of persevering through challenges.

Dance teaches us that growth isn’t always linear: progress is a PROCESS. We can’t always expect things to come to us naturally. When attempting a pirouette turn for the first time, it’s likely going to be challenging. Instead of feeling discouraged when first starting out, be kind to yourself and remember that good things come with time, practice and patience. The same lesson applies to anything new you take on in life.

Immersing yourself in a group who supports one another is key to building self-confidence, and will in-turn change your inner-monologue. A true friend is someone who cheers you on in

your mission to conquer your own goals, and who makes it easy to be there for them when they need a pep talk. Not only are our relationships with others integral in shaping our confidence, positive self-talk can go a long way. If your friend nails their pirouette, cheer them on and remember your time to shine will come. In the words of ice hockey Hall of Famer, Wayne Gretsky, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” Don’t be afraid to fall… take the leap. N S

OCTOBER IS NATIONAL PRINCIPALS MONTH

Did you know that October is National Principals Month? We can all agree that principals are some of the hardest working individuals in education. They set the standard and academic tone for their schools, yet often go unrecognized for their tireless efforts. Let’s use this time as an opportunity to come together to honor our amazing principals and thank them for their leadership, forward vision and dedication to the success of every student.

National Principals Month is a collaboration between the American Federation of School Administrators (AFSA),

the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

Each October, they seek to honor our principals for their tireless efforts in pursuit of excellence in education.

We are very fortunate to live in a community with award-winning schools led by principals who love what they do. Let’s hear what they have to say!

What do

John Beltrante

love about being the Principal of

Marple Newtown High School

My favorite part about being the principal of MNHS is talking with the students. Having conversations and discussions with them and hearing about their experiences in life and their perspectives on things that are happening around them makes you proud of how well they can rationalize and form an opinion on things. As educators, we have a lot to offer our students as we share our experiences and life lessons, but there is also a lot we can learn from our students.

Paxon Hollow Middle School

My favorite thing about being a principal is interacting with our students. For those who remember, middle school can be some of the toughest years of your life. I sincerely enjoy getting to know our students and watching them grow from elementary school students into freshmen in high school.

James Wigo

Culbertson Elementary School

My favorite thing about being the principal of Culbertson Elementary School is being a part of the family atmosphere that we have created. Our teachers and staff do an unbelievable job of making all our students feel comfortable, which in turn allows our students to grow both academically and socially. It is truly a pleasure to work with the parents/guardians of this community who fully support the learning process that Culbertson presents to their children.

The best thing about being a principal is definitely the kids! They bring blessings into my life on a daily basis. Each of their smiles, their jokes and their thanks makes my life better. They are the future and to be able to have a positive influence on the future is a huge responsibility but one I take very seriously and is extremely rewarding to me.

Sister Kathleen Touey, IHM Saint Pius X School

Being a principal is a treasured position. The beauty of encountering the students and recognizing their unique gifts gives you such a deep sense of meaning. Watching each student become the person that they are created to be is an awesome experience to watch. I feel privileged to be a part of their life’s journey.

Our principals are there when we need them, and now they need us. Use your voice this month to honor, thank, and advocate for all principals during National Principals Month! Write a note of thanks, give a gift of appreciation and let everyone know when you #ThankAPrincipal. N S

It wasn’t long after Marple Newtown native Mike Kane launched the ChristmasPrism app that he was flooded with messages asking to create a similar app for Halloween. His ChristmasPrism app helps find houses with the best Christmas holiday lights and it turns out people are just as excited to find Halloween-themed houses. “Halloween is more than a holiday,” said Mike. “It’s

a mindset.” Ever since he was a kid, Halloween has been Mike’s favorite holiday, so he didn’t need much convincing to get started coding a Halloween version of the app.

Mike is a Marple Newtown High School graduate and has been a professional coder since April 2015. His newest creation, FrightMaps, launched on

September 29 and, like ChristmasPrism, the app is free and user-generated. Anyone with an elaborate holiday display can upload a photo of their house with a title, brief description and location. For people looking for Halloween displays, the app’s built-in map shows where these attractions are. Just tap an icon and the information pops right up. The app also allows visitors to “like” the display and even add comments. “FrightMaps is a round-up of every major Halloween display in America and features home haunts, the biggest attractions and a place to post and view some pumpkins!” explained Mike.

When ChristmasPrism launched back in 2020, the number of users was small at first, but the app really took off after Mike was featured in Philly Mag, 6ABC, NBC10 and Fox29. By midDecember that year they received well

over 800 downloads. They now have 2500 houses and 90k+ users in all 50 states. Mike said the FrightMaps app may even exceed the number of users that they had for ChristmasPrism. “People loved the app,” Mike said. “But Halloween is a whole different ball game! All they wanted to know was: When Is the Halloween App coming out?”

To celebrate the new FrightMaps app, Mike even invited hundreds of people to “A Festival of Fright” on launch day. Held at Thornbury Farms in West Chester, the family friendly event featured a screening of Hocus Pocus, food, music and Halloween vendors. “I love throwing Halloween parties. So this was the perfect way to meet subscribers and launch the new app,” Mike said. “I’m so excited for another community-driven place for people to show off their Halloween spirit!”

One local house on the FrightMaps app is located in Marple. While some people put fake spiderwebs and carved pumpkins on their doorsteps to decorate their homes for Halloween, John DiMeo has taken things to the next level. This fall he’s turned his home into Monster House Delco, a series of Halloween projection shows that will run every weekend in October at his home on Sylvan Drive in Broomall.

John, his wife Jen and daughters Lily and Violet have lived here for the past 17 years, but John grew up in Newtown Square almost his entire life. As a family, they've always enjoyed decorating for the holidays, being easily recognizable from the hanging ghosts or Christmas balls in their front yard tree. At Christmastime last year, his home displayed an elaborate Frozen-themed projection light show, attracting visitors from all over Delaware County. “It started out as just being something fun for the neighborhood,” John explained. “Now we’ve got people coming from all over. It’s fun to see a crowd get out of their cars and enjoy the shows.”

This year’s Monster House Delco Halloween lineup includes six different shows all set to music. With themes like Haunted Mansion, Ghostbusters, Beetlejuice, “This is Halloween,” Stranger Things and Clown House (Based on Stephen King’s book It), there is something for everyone.

With falling leaves, cooler temperatures and Halloween just around the corner, we thank these Marple Newtown natives for helping us get into the spirit of Halloween. Download the FrightMaps app for FREE on your Apple or Android phone. For Monster House Delco showtimes, visit their Facebook page. N S

Are you in the market for a quality yet inexpensive used vehicle?

Maybe you’re looking for a second car or need a vehicle for a new driver in the family? With so many choices out there, how can you be sure you’ll buy something reliable and safe? How can you avoid buying a known “lemon” or paying too much? Here are some tips to help you make a well-informed buying decision.

Have a Specific Budget in Mind Cost is usually the #1 variable for most people when choosing

the right vehicle, used or new. There are good cars out there for every budget. Pick out a few vehicles you like that are within your budget, then talk to a trusted automotive professional, who should gladly review your list and weed out the vehicles that are too expensive to maintain or just plain problematic.

Get a Pre-Purchase Inspection

Whether you’re buying from a dealership or a private party, any vehicle you want to buy should pass a pre-purchase inspection. If a seller refuses to let you take the vehicle to your auto technician, then cross that one off your list. Set an appointment with your auto repair facility, to have them check out your short list. The information you receive about the vehicle(s) could be priceless. A reasonable inspection for leaks, loose or worn components and rust can help you avoid immediate repair costs. Have your auto technician perform a computer scan for trouble codes, which could save you hundreds or even thousands in repairs on hightech features and accessories.

Use a Trusted Auto Technician

If the shop is in Pennsylvania, have an ASE-certified repair shop perform an official inspection. Relying on such professional expertise can steer you away from auto headaches and toward a reliable vehicle.

Expensive Vehicles Aren’t Always the Best Choice

Do some online research about the vehicle(s) you’re interested in looking at. Review the safety features, accessories and reliability of each potential used vehicle you’re considering. Get a report for each vehicle’s accident damage and maintenance history. If the previous owner cared enough to maintain the vehicle to protect their investment, chances are it’s a good investment for you.

Bottom line

Spending some time and even a little money to find a safe, quality used vehicle will give you some priceless peace of mind.

Publishers Note: I may have inspired Lou Matteo to write his feature this month after he inspected my son’s old car in August and suggested it was time to let it go. And then looking over the used pickup truck my son was thinking of buying if Lou approved. Two great recommendations by one great auto mechanic that so many of us have come to trust. Thank you Lou.
