Dear Friends & Neighbors,
What a great time of year! From my home near Marple Newtown High School, I’m hearing the Fall sounds of football games and marching bands. And while I continue to get out to flea markets and fall festivals, I am increasingly mindful of all that I'm thankful for as Thanksgiving Day approaches.
I’m thankful for my family, my wife Jean and our four sons. And for our advertising Sponsors who are Bringing People Together by making Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors possible in print and online at: www.NewtownSquareMag.com.
I am also thankful for you, as a faithful reader of our magazine, which is created by the great efforts of our publication team. You only see a few of our faces: myself as Publisher, and Sheila Turner-Hilliard, our Content Coordinator for whom I am so thankful, for writing our cover story feature every month and her talent for all her writing, copyediting and proofing our magazine that takes so much time. Thank you for all you do Sheila!
Besides me as Publisher, Sheila as our Content Coordinator, and all our Expert Contributors, there are others whose faces you don’t see. Who doesn’t look forward to reading Doug Humes’ monthly History Spotlight feature? Thank you Doug. Your research and writing entertains and inspires our appreciation for Newtown Township’s rich history.
You also don’t see the face of my Executive Assistant, Lisa Jeffries, who keeps me organized, administers our monthly website changes, officiates our Student of The Month award, and schedules features authored by our Experts. I’m thankful for Lisa, and for the monthly proofing help provided by Holly Stupak, our Content Coordinator of our Marple Friends & Neighbors you can see online at: www.MarpleMag.com. Thank you Ladies.
But there’s one person whose face you never see but whose fingerprints have been on every page of every issue of our magazine — our designer, Kim Cesati, who this month has now designed our 50th issue! Thank you Kim, for so wonderfully shareing your design talents for the monthly enjoyment of Newtown Township residents.
Kim Cesati, this 50th edition of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine is dedicated to you, in thanks for your talented designs of nearly 2,000 pages of Newtown Square’s hometown magazine.
Sheila, let’s ask Newtown Township’s #1 Booster and Board of Supervisors Chairman, Leonard Altieri, to consider creating a Township Resolution to make Kim Cesati, an honorary citizen of Newtown Township in this month of Thanksgiving for Kim’s 50 months of talented efforts to be Bringing People Together as Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
Bob Blaisse Publisher
Dear Residents,
The holiday season is here! Our calendars are filled with reminders to turn back our clocks, vote in our local elections, thank our military veterans and pause to give thanks for all our blessings.
And just like your November calendar, this month’s issue is packed! Make sure those plans include a trip to Flight On Ice this winter for some family fun. We’ll introduce you to Meghan O’Neill, whose zest for life, learning and travel has led her to exactly where she’s meant to be. Our Business Profile highlights D&K Appliances and their commitment to being the dependable difference in our community for over 60 years. And, don’t forget to shop local on Small Business Saturday® and throughout the holiday season.
We are always looking for more Newtown Square families, individuals and organizations to feature in our magazine. If you’d like to nominate someone, please email me at STurnerHilliard@BestVersionMedia.com.

Meghan O’Neill: Living a Bright, Bold and Beautiful Life
Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors is proud to introduce Meghan O’Neill: A local artist whose colorful and creative path has led her home to Newtown Square.
Meghan (pronounced Mee-gan) grew up in Newtown Square with her parents and her younger sister, Shannon. She attended grade school at St. John Newman and graduated high school from The Academy of Notre Dame, where she played field hockey and lacrosse.
We would like to thank DANJOLELL Memorial Homes for sponsoring this month’s Resident Feature.
“I have such wonderful childhood memories,” Meghan said. “We grew up on a street with lots of kids and spent much of our time playing in the neighborhood and hanging out at each other’s houses.” Meghan said she especially loved trick-or-treating when her mother would hand out candy apples, and waving to Santa Claus as he rode down their street on the fire truck at Christmastime. Meghan’s father still lives in her childhood home, where Meghan and her sister often meet up with the friends that they grew up with. “Our friend Holly who lived next door, ended up buying her mom’s house, and now she hosts neighborhood reunion parties,” she said. “It was just such a special place to grow up, and I am happy that my childhood friends are still my family.”
After high school, Meghan went to Fairfield University, where she studied English and studied abroad in Paris, France. After graduation, Meghan began working as a marketing professional for a consulting firm and a law firm in New York. They were positions that allowed her to travel and connect with professionals around the world. Meghan’s desire to explore led her to land a position with SOCOG (Sydney Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games). “It was an amazing opportunity to work in their operations center and even more special because my sister came with me,” Meghan said. “We spent an amazing 16 months living in beautiful Bondi Beach before returning to the U.S.”
Meghan said she has always been passionate about traveling but also shared that she’s equally passionate about art. “I have loved art since winning a coloring contest when I was eight years old,” Meghan recalled. “The Newtown Square Fire Company sponsored the

contest, and the winner got to ride around town on one of their fire trucks. It was such a memorable moment for me.”
A self-described free spirit and lifelong learner, Meghan graduated with honors in Photography from The Art Institute of Philadelphia in 2011. She then studied under critically acclaimed artists Kelly Rae Roberts and Isaiah Zagar. “I have always had a hand in something creative, whether painting bisque at pottery studios in New York City or falling in love with photography while living in Australia,” Meghan explained. “I learned how to create angel art with Kelly Rae Roberts, and Isaiah Zagar taught me how to create amazing mosaic murals in downtown Philadelphia.”
Meghan is a true believer in the notion that each one of us is inherently creative. “I think art should be fun and make you feel good,” she said. “That is why I unapologetically work in different mediums on different days.” Meghan’s portfolio of artwork includes pieces made using alcohol ink, acrylic paints, encaustic wax and beautiful scraps of paper. Her work varies, from vivid and exuberant, to soft and contemplative, to whimsical and playful.
Over the years, Meghan has shown and sold her pieces at local art shows and charity events. “I enjoy sharing my work with others and have been able to use my art as a way to raise money for ‘Love Orphanage’ in Haiti,” she said. “Their mission is to change the lives of impoverished children in Haiti by providing a stable and safe home that nurtures the whole child –emotional, physical and mental well-being.”

Meghan has traveled to Haiti four times and actively fundraises for them. “Unfortunately, Haiti is not a safe place to travel to right now, and I miss the kids so much.” In 2017 and 2019, Meghan gathered other local artists who were willing to donate some of their work and held “Art for Love” fundraising events at Teca Newtown Square. “Between those two events, we raised over $45,000 for the orphanage’s culture camp program where kids are introduced to art and other creative outlets.”
Making a difference in others’ lives is very important to Meghan. It’s a lesson she learned from her parents. “My mother grew up in a family who built homes in this area,” she explained. “She understood what it was like to be a local business owner. So, every time a new local business opened, my mom would head right over to offer her best wishes and always made it a point to shop there regularly.” Unfortunately, her mother passed away in 2008, but the lessons she taught Meghan and her sister will last a lifetime.
Meghan and her sister, Shannon shared a very special bond with both of their parents. “One of my mom’s favorite things to tell people was that Shannon and I share the same birthday,” Megan laughed. “It wasn’t supposed to be that way because Shannon was born six weeks early!” Even more incredible is that even though Meghan and Shannon are three years apart, they are often mistaken for identical twins!
“Shannon and I have always been inseparable,” explained Meghan. “And that is why I eventually made my way back to Newtown Square.” Meghan said that she lived in Philadelphia full-time until 2020, when the pandemic began. Shannon was living in a townhome in Newtown Square with her daughter, Olivia, and Meghan’s father was in his home in Newtown Square. The separation caused by the pandemic was challenging, so she decided to spend the majority of time with her family in the suburbs. So Meghan decided to move in with Shannon, Olivia and their loveable pup, Murphy.
At the time, Shannon was actively looking for a single-family home in Newtown Square. “My sister always wanted to raise her daughter in Newtown Square in a neighborhood like we grew up in,” Meghan explained. Shannon learned that one was about to hit the market in the Echo Valley neighborhood and immediately made an offer. “Having just celebrated one year in Echo Valley, we

love all the new traditions with such great people,” Meghan said. “Halloween is a huge celebration, along with Easter Egg hunts and First Friday family parties. Murphy loves walking around the neighborhood, too!”
Meghan said that a favorite fall tradition that continues today is spending time around the firepit and watching Notre Dame football games. “Dad graduated in 1967 and is a huge fan.”
To Shannon’s daughter, Olivia, affectionately calls Meghan Bee, and they do just about everything together. From taking Olivia to dance class or to the dentist, Bee is by her side. In fact, a recent trip to the dentist is the reason why Meghan is about to embark on a new journey right here in Newtown Square. “I am a very spiritual person and have a strong desire to share my love of art and help bring creative expression through people who say they’re not creative,” she explained. “I was hoping to find studio space in Newtown Square and starting to look around for a space where I could offer classes and workshops, but wasn’t having much success.”

That was until Olivia showed her the way. “We were walking into the dentist’s office, but before we got to the door, Olivia darted up the steps to the second floor of the building,” Meghan said. “I followed her up to see she had opened the door to a beautiful, bright and inviting space that just so happened to be empty.” Meghan said she took one look and knew it was exactly what she was searching for. She contacted the owner and signed the lease.
Over the last few months, Meghan has transformed the space into her art studio, which is filled with an abundance of natural light and every art supply you could possibly imagine. “It’s absolutely perfect,” Meghan said. “I am so excited to fulfill my dream of having a space right here in Newtown Square that will help others learn, create and feel comfortable with expressing themselves.” Her studio, Meghan O’Neill Studios (www.MeghanONeill.com), located on Smedley Ln, will open this month and will offer workshops and house a gallery of Meghan’s original artwork, prints, greeting cards and gifts.
Meghan, thank you for sharing your story with our Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors. We wish you all the best as you embark on this bright, bold and whimsical new journey right here in your hometown!

NOVEMBER
The November Casey’s Public House Student of the Month is Harjot Lehal, who received a Certificate of Achievement and a $25 gift card from Casey’s Public House, our Sponsor of this program.
Harjot is in the 7th grade at Paxon Hollow Middle School and attends their Life Skills Program, which teaches students on the spectrum valuable skills and tools for daily living, as well as functional academics. As a very social and friendly student,
STUDENT OF THE
Harjot enjoys helping to deliver the daily mail throughout the school. He is a part of the Best Buddies Club, and enjoys the interaction and camaraderie he encounters in the halls, the classrooms and anywhere he can offer someone a smile or tell a joke.
Cooking is one of Harjot’s great joys in the Life Skills Program. He enjoys math class the most out of his classes, but he’s not all that fond of Language Arts class. Although he is sometimes hesitant when it comes to going on field trips, this is one place where Harjot shines, showing his incredible skills when bowling or playing mini-golf, among other trips. The move up from elementary school to middle school truly helped Harjot to blossom even more, and his great sense of humor gets a smile from everyone.
Harjot hopes to continue to improve in both daily living skills and academics, through attending Marple Newtown High School and then onto college, where he hopes to prepare for his dream career in a restaurant-focused business. Like most students his age, Harjot likes to spend time with friends and playing video games. Your Marple Newtown Friends & Neighbors congratulate you on your incredible growth and accomplishments, Harjot! We wish you all the best in everything you dream of doing in the future, and we have no doubt you’ll do great things! N S
MONTH Any grade 7–12 student who resides within the borders of the Marple Newtown School District may be nominated by a parent, teacher or other adult who submits in writing some ways the student demonstrates Excellence in Service to friendship, school or other local communities. Academic or athletic excellence is not required. Email your nomination to Lisa Jeffries at LJeffries@BestVersionMedia. com. An interior paint job can be a great way to make your home feel brand-new, but how do you know when it’s the right time? Here are some top signs that it’s time for you to repaint your interior for a fresh perspective.
Walls Are Damaged
Chances are your walls are going to get damaged at some point. Small dents, holes and dings can be repaired with a quick touch-up coat on the damaged area. But larger issues like water leaks may require more drastic measures. If you notice water spots on your paint, first and foremost, call a plumber to find and fix the source of the leak. Even if you paint over a water stain, it will just come back if you don’t fix the underlying problem first.
Colors Are Faded
As beautiful as natural sunlight is, over the years it can take its toll on your home, as exposure to light strips away color. Although it may take you a long time to notice, the same happens to your walls. Look around the edges of glass doors, windows and skylights to see if any sharp lines show where the paint color has faded away. A new paint color can make everything seem brighter, cleaner and newer.
Things Are Outdated
Times change, trends change and as much as you may have loved that paint color when you first put it on the walls, it may feel very outdated now. In the 1990s, many homeowners wanted red and yellow walls with wood accents to make their homes feel cozy and luxurious. Today those colors are almost unspeakable in the interior design world – everything is about grays and whites that keep things light and airy.
You’re Ready for a Change
Even aside from cultural fads, you may find that a color you once loved in a room doesn’t spark the joy it used to. Bold jewel tones and patterned accent walls can feel exciting and stylish when you first paint them. But over time, your taste may have changed and you might find yourself wishing you didn’t have to look at that color.
You’re Selling Your House
One of the best times to paint your interior is when you’re getting ready to put your house on the market. Bold colors and décor can
be a great choice for your family, but during showings you want buyers to be able to see themselves living in the home.
When selling your house, plan to paint the interior walls to neutral shades. Whites and light grays are best, as these colors are relaxing, clean and easy for potential buyers to see themselves living with. If you want something a little warmer, you can also go for a nice beige color. Paint can change the entire feel of your house from top to bottom, and it’s not a job you should put off. N S

Most of us have purchased a TV from a major retailer and did our due diligence to ensure it is installed safely and protected. So the next step is often to purchase a point of use surge protector strip, although many people don’t really understand why they need one and why it’s important to protect their devices. Televisions these days are bigger and more impressive than anything we could have imagined years ago, but whether they’re giant or small, they are all sensitive to electrical power surges. What many people don’t realize is that today’s home appliances – dishwashers, washing machines, microwaves, refrigerators, coffee makers – are packed with electronic circuits where many voltage surges within the home can originate from. Voltage surges are often caused when an appliance is turned on.
Think about how many times a day the refrigerator alone cycles on and off, or you use your microwave or coffee maker. A second type of voltage surge comes from outside of your home, most commonly when the power goes off and on from storms, accidents, regular system maintenance or other causes.
Voltage surges can be highly dangerous for your electronics, and that’s why surge protectors have become so popular because most will help prevent damage to your things. However, if a surge protector isn’t properly installed, a sudden surge of 120 volts or higher can cause anything from premature device failure, to burned wires and fires. Permanent damage or personal injury is always a possibility as well.
A surge protector is made to provide additional internal protection for your electrics. When a surge does occur, the surge protector strip is the final protective layer, commonly referred to as stage 2 protection. Stage 1 protection is most often a piece of equipment attached to your service panel which provides protection from the small surges originating inside the home as well as those generated externally from the power grid. These two devices working in tandem will extend the life of the electronic components in all of your home appliances.
It’s important to regularly check your surge protectors. A green light indicator, which many are equipped with, shows that the device is functioning. To ensure the protection of your electronics and your home, a surge protection system which includes both stage 1 and stage 2 provisions, along with a properly installed grounding system, is a good and safe plan.

Some business owners I meet with, to propose they become an advertising Sponsor of our community, will slant a question about how much people read magazines these days, with the mention of everyone getting their news and entertainment online these days. I promise to answer that question but ask if I can first ask them several questions so I can give them a better anser. Then I ask:
“Do you like to read digital ads? Do you think people living in homes where our hometown magazines are mailed, have pride in living in their hometown?”
And then the final question, the one that gets the ball across the line: “Do you believe people can come together by reading feel-good stories about the community they share, and about people living among them?”
That last question not only gets the ball across the line, it also changes who’s holding the ball.
Nearly everyone enjoys reading special interest magazines, and even the ads in these magazines. That’s because once a publication has proven itself to be of some special interest to a reader, each new issue elevates greater trust that time spent reading the publication will be a similar rewarding investment of time. The Dependable Difference
We are fortunate to live in an area so rich with both history and local businesses that have stood the test of time; Businesses like D&K Appliances, which has been a staple of our community since 1960.
Whether you’re in the market for a new refrigerator or planning a total kitchen renovation, you owe it to yourself to check out D&K. For over 60 years, the friendly and helpful folks there have been providing the care and expert service that loyal customers
have come to know and trust, serving homeowners and commercial businesses in Delaware, Chester and Montgomery counties. The business was originally owned by partners Dan Cosfol and Bob Krunkel. It was purchased in 1988 by Tom McIntyre and remains in the McIntyre family today. “I worked for General Electric (GE) as a service tech and a manufacturing supervisor for 20 years,” Tom explained. “During that time, I had the opportunity to work with various appliance companies in the area. That is how I met Dan and Bob.” Tom said that over the years, he formed a solid relationship built on trust and work ethic. So, when it came time for Dan and Bob to sell their business, they approached Tom.
Leaving a company like GE to run your own business is a big risk, but Tom was prepared for the challenge. “D&K was already established in Newtown Square and had a good reputation for quality sales and service,” explained Tom. “I had the manufacturing experience and the desire to run my own business to provide for my family’s future.” After the sale was complete, Dan agreed to stay on as an employee to help with the transition. “He ended up staying for 20 years,” laughed Tom. “All kidding aside, Dan Cosfol was instrumental in training and mentoring our sales team.”
Tom said that another reason he wanted to own his own business was that he hoped that someday his kids would join him. Today, Tom’s son Dan McIntyre is part owner and President of D&K Appliances, his daughter, Karen Farrelly is D&K’s Chief Financial Officer and his son-in-law, Mike Fitz is their Chief Operating Officer.
And that’s just the beginning! The minute you open the showroom door, you are greeted by Tom’s granddaughters, Ashley and Caitlyn in the sales department. Another one of his granddaughters, Makenzie, recently joined the team and handles marketing and social media. “Yes, we are a family-owned business,” said Dan. “But we consider everyone who works at D&K part of our family. So much so that everyone calls my father, Tom, Pop.”
Pop’s family has certainly grown over the years as has his business. Originally, D&K Appliances was located on the Westbound side of West Chester Pike. It was a 3,000-square-foot building

that housed a showroom, offices and a service department. “About seven years ago, we decided that we needed more space,” Tom explained. “We didn’t have to look too far, because the perfect spot became available right across the street.”
Now located on the Eastbound side of West Chester Pike, D&K’s impressive 12,000-square-foot showroom features two floors of the latest appliances from refrigerators, dishwashers and ranges to washers, dryers and outdoor grills. Their sales team is also fully equipped to educate customers on the latest technologies and help them choose the best appliances for their everyday needs and their budget.
Customers come to D&K Appliances because they want answers from a knowledgeable sales team, fast delivery from a local warehouse, and service from a team of technicians that knows how to keep appliances working. “Our field technicians and installers complete 70-80 jobs every day,” Dan said. “Whether you need a new appliance installed or a repair to your existing appliance, our expert technicians will deliver quality service and offer valued advice.”
The success of D&K Appliances is based on the company’s standard of excellence and its core values. “We are the dependable difference because we are dedicated to Excellence, Integrity, Customer Service and Dependability,” Dan explained. “We treat our customers like family, not only because we live here and work here, but also because supporting our local community is important to us, too.”
That is why you will consistently see D&K Appliances involved in local events, donating to local charities and supporting our schools. They also work with the Marple Newtown High School’s football team to provide internships and community service work. “Each year, we put five or six football players on a project to learn about installing and servicing equipment,” said Dan. “We really enjoy giving back to our friends and neighbors and look forward to many more years of serving our community.”
D&K Appliances is located at 3510 W Chester Pike, Newtown Square. Their showroom is open Monday–Friday from 9am –7pm and Saturday 10am – 5pm. For more information, call 610-356-2424, visit their website, www.DKappliances.net, and follow them on Instagram at dkappliances. N S

Time Travel at the Firehouse
by Preston Tyrrell and Doug Humes
Carl Ewing, past Chief the Newtown Square Fire Company is now the “Official Time Capsule Opener.” When the first firehouse building was built in 1916, a copper box was sealed in the cornerstone. When that firehouse was torn down in 1965, Carl was on hand to grab the time capsule, which was opened with 11 Charter members on hand to witness the event.
In 1967, it was once again sealed, with plans to open it on the 100th Anniversary of the fire company. In 2016, the decision was made to wait to open it as a new building was planned. COVID interfered –and members moved into the new building, leaving the cornerstone behind, but not forgotten. On September 24, 2022, Carl Ewing removed the copper box at the old building. Assisting him were Past Chief and Past President Robert Allison, Past Chief Robert Robinson, Chief Douglas Everlof and President Tina Heffernan.

With no instruction on which end to open, Carl guessed and went to work with a hacksaw. It was a good guess, as one end had glass items and the other paper. Members gathered around as company historian Preston Tyrrell took each item out of the box. Some items were expected to be in the box, and others were not. The members had recently found a list of the items added in 1967. Jack Monahan, who sealed the box in 1967, placed two of his driver’s licenses in the box, as well as a photo. Danny Cosfol placed in an envelope a penny, a nickel, a dime and a quarter, totaling 41 cents. Oddly enough, five years later, the fire company would join the county-wide dispatch system and receive the station designation of 41.
In 1995, long-time member Al Branca who had served for 56 years, wished to have his ashes spread from the roof of the firehouse. As they moved to a new location in 2020, one of the concerns was “What to do about Al?” A mug of gravel from the old roof was collected and spread on the roof of the new firehouse, symbolically bringing Al with us.
The items, including a nail and rivet from the 1915 fire that gave birth to the fire company, were displayed during the building’s dedication on October 8, 2022. Plans for what to do with the items and a new time capsule are in the works.

Assisted Living Myths
While many individuals dread a move to a senior community for a variety of reasons, the senior living industry has revolutionized itself into something to be celebrated. Common misunderstandings among seniors and families often emerge when the topic is broached.
Myth #1: These Are Nursing Homes
The words “Assisted Living” conjure up scary images for many individuals – based upon past experiences – nursing homes of the 1960s and 1970s – where their loved ones may have had negative experiences.
Today’s senior communities couldn’t be further from the nursing homes of yore. They are designed to cover health management, safety, social engagement and quality of life for the residents. They offer bright, comfortable residences of all sizes, engaging programming based on the residents’ preferences and peace of mind that any care needs can be addressed.
Myth #2: Safer at Home Safety is a key benefit of moving into a community. Most seniors prefer to stay in their own home – somewhere familiar and full of memories – but many homes are not conducive to “age in place” safely. They may not be able to easily accommodate walkers or wheelchairs, which often results in seniors spending more and more time in a small section of the house. Senior communities are specifically designed with safety in mind: Handrails, grab bars, personal alert devices and emergency pull cords are all standard –helping to reduce stress on both the senior and families knowing they are in a safer environment.
Myth #3: Taking Away Independence
Many seniors feel a move to a community means a loss of independence – the next step in their ever-shrinking world. Though many no longer drive, family and friends may not visit as often, friends and spouses may have passed – leaving these individuals more isolated than ever before. Maintaining independence is a priority for communities and residents alike – staff provides the care and support (including transportation) so the senior’s world actually expands beyond what they had at home.
Myth #4: They Aren’t That Social Even if someone is not a social butterfly, there is value in daily engagement with peers. It has been demonstrated that both loneliness and social isolation are associated with decreased cognitive function. Even something as simple as coming out of their apartment for three meals a day can go a long way in the social engagement of a resident.
The best way to dispel the myths associated with these communities is to get information and tour those near you. A move to a senior community can provide the framework for a future of independence through reassuring avenues of care, safety and socialization. N S

Celebrating Veterans Day
by Sheila Turner-Hilliard
Veterans give us many gifts including safety, security and freedom. So how can we thank the members of our military, both past and present? Veterans Day is right around the corner, so let’s honor these service members by acknowledging the sacrifices they make and finding ways to celebrate them.
In order to honor American veterans of all wars properly, it is important to know the history of the holiday. Each year, Veterans Day is observed on November 11th, regardless of the day of the week. Why November 11th? It’s the day that signifies the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, marking the end of World War I.
Originally known as Armistice Day, Congress passed legislation in 1938 to officially dedicate November 11th to the cause of world peace. In 1954, veterans and service organizations urged Congress to change the word “Armistice” to “Veterans.” The legislation was approved in June of that year, and November 11th became the
official holiday to honor our American veterans of any war. Then in 1968, due to the Uniform Holiday Bill, Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday in October, ensuring a three-day weekend for federal holidays. However some states did not agree with this decision, so they continued to celebrate it on its original date. Finally in 1975, President Ford signed a law returning the annual observance of the holiday to November 11th.
Perhaps you know a veteran personally and you’re looking to honor them, or you want to contribute something meaningful to all veterans this year. There are many ways to do that, right here in our community. Veterans Day events like parades or local services are great ways to celebrate our local vets. The Delaware County Veterans Legacy organizes the annual Veterans Day Parade held in Media, PA, an enjoyable event for the community where you can clap and cheer as these service members go by.
Veterans Day is the perfect time to ask a veteran you know about their service. Some good questions are: What did you do in the military? How long did you serve? Why did you choose to go into a specific service branch? You may not have to say much, just listen as they tell you about their experience. You can even spend time with them in the great outdoors as the National Parks offer free admittance to all veterans on November 11th.
Whether it’s attending an event, supporting a veteran-owned business or simply striking up a conversation with a veteran, be sure to find a way to honor the bravery and sacrifice of all United States veterans. Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors wish all of our local veterans a Happy Veterans Day, and we sincerely thank these men and women for their service! N S

Marple Newtown Residents Welcomed at Marple's Community Days Fall Festival
by Holly Stupak Photos courtesy of Holly Stupak
A good time was had by Newtown Square and Broomall residents alike at Marple Community Days Fall Festival. On Saturday, October 15th, visitors to Veterans Memorial Park enjoyed music, games, bounce houses and arts and crafts stations. A portion of Lawrence Rd was closed so that shoppers could enjoy plenty of food and vendors. The evening ended with a fireworks display! Marple Township worked with JoLina events, community members, local business owners and government officials to bring this event to life. It was thanks to these local Sponsors who made the day possible: Republic Bank, Anthony’s Paxon, Pacifico Marple Ford Lincoln, Videon Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, Produce Junction, Owls Water Ice and Treats, Marple Public House, Rafferty Suburu, Dotty’s Gourmet Kitchen and Market, Logowear House, Splash Club, Delco Steaks and Joe’s Pizza.
There was something for everyone on Lawrence Rd in Broomall. Local craft vendors sold their handmade jewelry, bags, seasonal decorations, toys, Phillies, Eagles and Delco gear, hot wheels, sweet treats and candles. Sweet treats like donuts and cotton candy and good eats like tacos and pizza were provided by the area’s top food trucks and restaurants. The DJ as well as a local string band kept the mood fun and festive with some great music.
Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine’s mission is Bringing People and highlighting this event is the perfect way to show how our Marple Newtown readers love to come together! N S

Are you looking to protect your trees and shrubs from the elements this winter? If extreme winter weather has taken a toll on your trees in the past, you aren't alone. Each year in regions hit by bitter cold winter weather, gardeners do their yearly spring check and discover all of the damage the winter has wrought. Here are four steps you can take now that can make all the difference.
Wrap - Warm winter sun can cause the cells in your tree trunks to come out of dormancy and become active. When temperatures drop below freezing again, the newly active cells and tissue within the trees can be killed, causing an injury that may result in scarring. Wrap tree trunks (especially saplings) in burlap or a light-colored crepe paper wrap made specifically for wrapping trees, in order to protect them from this warming and freezing scenario.
Mulch Types - Covering the area around your trees with plenty of mulch prevents winter root injury, by slowing down the daytime thawing and nighttime freezing process that occurs in late fall and
early winter. Mulch traps soil moisture and warmth, so your tree and plant roots can continue their growth farther into the winter months. Mulch depth should be between 2-3 inches for smaller mulch, and 3-4 inches for larger mulch.
Water - You should definitely water trees in the winter, but do it when the temperature is above 40 degrees and when there is no snow cover on the ground. Watering your trees is essential during dry periods in the fall, winter and early spring, when you aren't watering your lawn regularly so your trees aren’t getting that residual hydration.
Fertilize - Believe it or not, winter is the right time of year to start fertilizing your trees for new growth in the spring. The reason is that you want the tree to have time to soak up all those nutrients and start metabolizing them, before the spring growth begins. These simple steps can save you time, money and headaches come spring when you don’t have to replace your trees. N S

SHOP LOCAL
by Sheila Turner-Hilliard
Tucked between mammoth national sales events Black Friday and Cyber Monday is Small Business Saturday® — a day to celebrate and support our small businesses and all they do for our community. Let's come together this holiday season for our independent merchants on Saturday, November 26th, to thank them for working hard to keep our local economy flourishing.
Small Business Saturday® was originally founded by American Express in 2010 to encourage buyers to support small businesses after the economic slump we experienced from 2007–2009. In 2011, the U.S. Senate joined the cause by passing a resolution supporting Small Business Saturday®. The Small Business Association (SBA) officially co-sponsored this annual initiative, which has since grown to include all 50 states. We know that now more than ever, our local businesses need our support as they continue to bounce back from the effects of the pandemic.
For small business owners, their business is more than just a business — it’s an extension of who they are. When you flip through the pages of our Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine, you see all our hometown Sponsors who are not only a large part of our daily lives, but big supporters of our community causes and our school fundraisers. These business owners are always the first to thank the community for their patronage, so take the time to use your holiday dollars this season to ensure their doors stay open for years to come.
Before you buy big, think small. Remember those businesses who are always there to sponsor and support our local sports teams and charity events. How many times have you seen local restaurants donate food? Or hair salons, gift shops and dance studios donate

baskets of goods and services? Over at Blush Salon, Co-Owners Michele Quinn and Brittany Naab appreciate when residents choose to purchase gift cards, products and services because they consistently see Blush supporting the community. “Growing up in Newtown Square and now also owning a business here is really special,” they said.
Small businesses are the backbone of our community. When you shop local, you support the entrepreneurial spirit, driving our economic prosperity and keeping our friends and neighbors employed. Shopping local means that businesses can grow and hire more employees. In fact, the Small Business Association (SBA) says that across the United States, small businesses account for over 64% of new jobs created each year.
Local businesses like Rey Azteca certainly know how vital community support is to sustain and grow a business. They opened their Newtown Square location just two months before the pandemic shut everything down. Co-Owner Jenny Palacios said, “We appreciate all the incredible support from the community during that difficult time.” Rey Azteca is not only surviving but thriving. Consider booking your next gathering there or purchasing a gift card on Small Business Saturday®
Remember our friends at Weinrich’s Bakery and Luigi & Giovanni’s when planning your holiday menus this season. And if you’re looking to add some holiday cheer to your home, take a ride over to Mostardi’s Nursery for beautiful seasonal decor, flowers and plants.
Our very own Newtown Square Business Association (NSBA) is encouraging you to shop local as well. Last year they completed a project to have decorative banners designed and installed along West Chester Pike and St. Albans Circle that encourage you to “Shop the Square.” Graphic Designer and NSBA Member Pam Purser was asked to create the design. “We knew we wanted the banners to be modern and dynamic,” she said. “The squares refer to the square in our town’s name, of course, but they also represent the small businesses that make Newtown Square unique.”
Sure, the deals and steals that flood our mailboxes and social media feeds can be awfully tempting, but nothing beats the feeling of walking into your local gift shop where you’re greeted by name. That level of customer service is what makes shopping local so special. “We care about our customers,” explained Anne Marie Hare from Bunny Hare’s gift shop. “Because we live here and work here, we can help you pick out unique gifts that you won’t find anywhere else.” Loyal customers certainly agree, not to mention their complimentary gift wrapping is one less thing you need to do this holiday season!
’Tis the season to spread holiday cheer and offer good tidings to all, including our local small businesses. Make a difference and commit this year by choosing to shop local instead of the big retailers. Thanksgiving Craft Ideas for Kids
by Lisa Jeffries
Jar Leaf Lanterns
For extra fun and beauty this year, have your child create mood lighting for the Thanksgiving table. These Jar Leaf Lanterns come together so easily with just a few pretty leaves and a bit of Mod Podge. Your child will be proud to tell everyone that they helped make this year’s feast even more beautiful!
Here’s what you’ll need:
• Glass jar
• Fall colored real or fabric leaves
• Mod Podge (matte finish)
• Sponge Brush
Directions: Peel the plastic ribbing off if using fabric leaves; thoroughly wash the jar and wipe the outside with rubbing alcohol; add a thin layer of Mod Podge to the outside of the jar slightly larger than your first leaf with the sponge brush; let the glue get a little sticky before pressing the leaves on or they won’t stick; press down any edges to ensure the leaf is completely adhered before you move on to the next leaf and so on till the jar is covered to your liking. Then brush a layer of Mod Podge around the whole outside of the jar and let it dry completely. When you’re ready to set your festive table decor, place either a battery operated or regular tea light candle inside.

Beaded Pipe Cleaner Corn
Every Thanksgiving Day needs some autumnal color, and you can’t go wrong with these beautiful ears of colorful corn. And it couldn’t be more simple! All you need are some pipe cleaners and pony beads.
Here’s what you’ll need:
• 4 pipe cleaners, each 12" long
• Plastic pony beads
Directions: Take four 12" pipe cleaners and an assortment of beads in the shades you like best; line up the pipe cleaners so they are even on each end and twist them together to form a star shape; thread the beads onto each pipe cleaner, until they are all covered; leave about an inch of pipe cleaner showing on each end so you can form the “husks” on the ends; bend each bead covered pipe cleaner to form the “ear” and twist them to secure the beads and form the corn “husks.”
Turkey Hand Puppets Craft
It’s hard to believe that all it takes to make adorable turkey hand puppets is some old gloves, feathers, googly eyes, pipe cleaners and scraps of felt or construction paper. Then let the show begin!
Here’s what you’ll need:
• Gloves (old or mismatched work great)
• Sets of googly eyes
• Small piece red felt or paper
• A yellow/orange pipe cleaner
• Feathers
Directions: Glue a set of googly eyes onto the glove thumbs; cut two small pieces of the pipe cleaner and glue these to the thumbs to form the beak; cut two small pieces of felt or paper and glue directly below the beaks to form the turkey waddle; glue the feathers to the other four fingers of each glove. It’s important to remember to let the glue dry between each step. Now you’re ready to help put on or sit back and watch the kids’ Thanksgiving puppet show! N S

Flight On Ice Skating Rink Is Back! A Community Partnership to Benefit Our Veterans

In addition, the team at Flight On Ice is excited to fill your calendar with extra special events for the upcoming holiday season, so save the date for Thanksgiving Eve skates, Santa Brunches and a New Year’s Eve party you won’t want to miss!
It’s hard to believe that what was an empty lot just a few short months ago is being transformed into such a fun, vibrant winter wonderland for all ages. But the Flight On Ice folks and Edgmont Township officials worked hard, along with the deBotton family and National Realty Corporation to make it happen. This is the second year in a row that this rink has been installed in Edgmont, and is one of six rink locations planned to bring outdoor skating fun to communities in PA and NJ this season.
Shake off those winter-weather blues, grab your skates and hit the ice for some fun, November 18th through February 27th at Flight On Ice’s Energy Transfer Veterans Memorial Rink. This pop-up winter wonderland right in our own backyard features a full-size (60'x100') outdoor skating rink, skate rentals, festive lighting, delicious food and beverages, heated hospitality tents, cozy firepit seating, special events and entertainment for the whole family. The buzz surrounding the rink’s opening last year was undeniably electric, and the reviews since then have been spectacular, with the rink recently being voted Best of Delco 2022 for Fun Day Family Outing. Season passes, family 4-packs and individual online ticket sales have been as brisk as the weather, as many of our Friends & Neighbors gathered in good cheer last season to enjoy the rink and all its splendor. This month, the Flight On Ice team is just getting started! Their calendar of events will feature a jam-packed lineup of special events and party opportunities. Weekly events include Movie Nights on Wednesdays, Thank You Thursdays with buy-one-getone half off skate pass specials and Skating Under the Stars on Fridays with a discount on 2-packs — perfect for a couples night out. Saturday Night Socials will transform the rink into a colorful glow party with music and themed entertainment and Sunday Fundays will feature a special family 4-pack ticket bundle, including a complimentary offering that will enhance the experience along with games, giveaways and more. Whether it’s during the week or the weekend, the rink is this season’s go-to place to enjoy a night out with friends, take your special someone on a date or make family memories.
Flight On Ice’s location and its mission were made possible through a partnership between those two partners and the Delaware County Veterans Memorial Association (DCVMA).
Jon Schaffer said that the mission of Flight On Ice is to donate a significant portion of their proceeds to that worthy organization and other similar organizations that support veterans. “We want to help shine a light on our veterans,” Jon explained. “Through our donations and our new community-partnering educational program last year, we’re able to help teach younger generations what it means to serve our country.”
A portion of the proceeds from both rink sales and sponsorships will benefit the Delaware County Veterans Memorial Association,

located just blocks away from the rink. Last season, Flight On Ice raised over $55,000 for the DCVMA to support the memorial and local veterans in the community. The donations received from the ice rink were used to start an endowment program for the memorial managed by Lynch Investments. This season, the DCVMA will be creating a match program for all proceeds.
There are a number of sponsorship opportunities available at the rink, including a special educational-focused program that brings groups of school students out to the rink for a private skate session and complimentary refreshments, but more importantly, includes a visit to the Delaware County Veterans Memorial just a few blocks up the road. That’s where the students get a guided tour of the Memorial and learn first hand from a local veteran about those who have sacrificed for our freedoms.
Jon said that local businesses are welcome to sponsor a field trip that they’ve branded their Skip and Skate event, to show their support and commitment to educating our youth. Interested community leaders, business owners and individuals should contact Flight On Ice for more information on how to become a sponsor.
The Energy Transfer Veterans Memorial Rink is located at 4901 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, right next door to Starbucks and Bonefish Grill at the Shoppes at Marville. It will be open Wednesdays and Thursdays 4 – 8pm; Fridays 4 – 10pm; Saturdays 11am – 10pm; and Sundays 11am – 8pm. Hours are weather dependent. The rink is also available for private and semi-private events with a number of party packages to choose from.
For their current events calendar and for any weather-related closings, check their website and social media pages @FlightOnIce and @FlightOnIceEdgmont. Science has made huge contributions to our quality of life. We live longer and better because of medical science. We travel more comfortably and go farther because of science. Scientific breakthroughs have brought certainty, clarity and control to our lives. Wouldn’t it be great if all the things that come with science could be made available to investing?
You may not be aware of it, but science has had a huge impact on investing for over 88 years. Schools like the University of Chicago, have engaged in groundbreaking research that has resulted in 17 Nobel Prizes in the field of economics.
One of the wonderful things about living at this point in time is that the computer and digital age allows for the processing of massive amounts of data, and it has allowed researchers to verify the efficacy of their research. There is now actually PhD level math behind the science of investing. The breakthroughs have taken a lot of the mystery out of investing. When discovered and applied properly, they can be life changing and life saving. For example, how much risk is in your portfolio?
Rather than broad ambiguous terms like conservative, moderate or aggressive, an investor can actually mathematically measure the amount of risk of one portfolio against another. Measurements make it easier for an investor to build a portfolio that matches their risk and return preferences.
Science has also added an important component to diversification. Diversification is not just owning different kinds of investments. To academia, it’s also measuring how those different investments will offset each other under different sets of economic conditions. Investors can get this measurement before they invest so they know in advance whether or not the portfolio they are considering is truly diversified. These are just some areas of investing through which science has made huge strides in impacting the quality of peoples’ lives. And the great thing about science is that it’s a mountain that has no top. The best is yet to come. N S
