DEAR BROTHERS, FRIENDS OF BETA AND PARENTS: On behalf of the General Fraternity, thank you for your generous support of today’s young men of principle. Because of you, 10,000 students, 140,000+ alumni and 1,000 volunteers will continue to receive the resources needed to honor the mission of our Fraternity: “To develop men of principle for a principled life.” With the challenging climate of today’s Greek life across North America, we look to 2019 as an opportunity to rededicate ourselves to Beta Theta Pi’s founding principles. The Fraternity continues to perform at a high level, including nearly 2,000 leadership program graduates this year and 3.23 allBeta GPA — but now is not the time to rest on our laurels. This year we lost a brother who has been a key player in the Fraternity’s pivotal Men of Principle initiative, serving as its 20-year spokesman. Retired Indiana Senator Richard G. Lugar, Denison ’54, dedicated his life to bettering his country, the world and our Fraternity. Lugar considered this Fraternity a lifelong commitment and devoted his time and treasure pouring back into it what he received as a young student, including his attendance at countless Beta events around the continent and 23 General Conventions. Today, as we look at the path ahead for our Great and Good Fraternity, we aim to all be individuals as caring and involved as Senator Lugar — a man who ever honored his Fraternity. It is through these beliefs that the Fraternity’s vision will be realized in support of the founding principles of eight young men from Miami University in 1839. OUR IMPACT An astonishing 1,767 undergraduates received quality leadership training through Beta’s leadership programs in 2019.

OUR FOUNDATION 17 Foundation Directors, 6 Foundation staff members and 23 Foundation Ambassadors continually give of their time and treasure as Foundation advocates.

BETA LEADERSHIP FUND SUPPORTS STRATEGIC PRIORITIES

Guided by the Board of Trustees, the Fraternity is hard at work developing and executing important new programs, procedures and resources aimed at fulfilling the goals of Beta’s recently adopted strategic priorities focused on brotherhood, personal growth, and a sense of home. This year, the BLF is funding new educational endeavors, including three promising programs aimed at enriching brotherhood, strengthening chapters, and fulfilling the Fraternity’s mission of developing men of principle for a principled life. The Beta Brotherhood Assessment is an in-depth evaluation of the undergraduate chapter culture. Individual chapter results are discussed with chapter officers and alumni, and customized reports point chapters toward areas of brotherhood which can be strengthened. New online training is maximizing effectiveness by offering consistent, standardized onboarding and resources for chapter officers and volunteers. Son of the Stars is a standardized new member education program being piloted by some 40 chapters. It offers a road map to an outcomes-based new member experience, ensuring a breadth of Beta knowledge is shared by every brother welcomed into Beta Theta Pi. Donor support, through gifts to the BLF, will continue to be integral in providing these important new resources to today’s Beta undergraduates and volunteers.

MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM /// Exemplifying Beta’s Devotion to the Cultivation of the Intellect In fiscal year 2019, the Merit Scholarship Program provided 90 scholarships totaling $108,425 to Betas and sons and daughters of Betas pursuing their undergraduate or graduate degrees. DEA GRANT PROGRAM /// Enhancing the Academic Culture of Beta’s Living Environments The Designated Educational Area Grant Program allows alumni to make gifts to the Beta Foundation that are earmarked for funding educational areas or projects of chapter houses. Once a DEA Grant application is approved by the Foundation Board, the funds can be used to fully or partially subsidize educational projects such as libraries, study rooms, computer rooms, computer equipment, internet and access space.”

NAMED ENDOWMENT FUND Willie Romero, UNLV ’95, endowed the Willie Romero Men of Principle Scholarship Fund to support undergraduate Beta leaders through tuition scholarships.

SONS OF THE DRAGON CLUB Noah Anderson, Arkansas ’21, joined the Sons of the Dragon Club with a gift of $18.39 to the BLF and led his chapter to 100 percent Club participation.

AUTO-KAI CLUB Amory Baril, Friend of Beta and University of Texas chapter advisor, continued her recurring BLF giving through the Auto-Kai Club.

NAMED ENDOWMENT FUNDS /// Exemplifying Beta’s Devotion to the Cultivation of the Intellect Named Endowment Funds allow the Foundation to impact the Beta generations of today and tomorrow. These funds are subject to a four percent spending policy, which ensures generous annual distributions, while also emphasizing compounding growth for the future.

BR. SIMON HERRMANN, O.S.B. LEADERSHIP FUND Former Beta Associate Editor turned Monk, Simon Herrmann, Dayton ’10, gifted $10,000 to the Beta Foundation to establish an endowment that will benefit the Eta Delta undergraduates through leadership development opportunities.

STEVEN CRUZ LEADERSHIP FUND To honor the impact that Beta Theta Pi has made on his life, recently elected General Fraternity Trustee Steven Cruz, Florida International ’12, created the Steven Cruz Leadership Fund. The fund provides leadership development sponsorships for Beta undergraduates through a recurring annual gift and a generous estate provision. LIGHT FAMILY LEADERSHIP FUND David W. Light III, SMU ’64, established the Light Family Leadership Endowment Fund to memorialize his father and two uncles, all three of which were Betas (David W. Light, Jr., Tulane ’30, Jack H. Light, Texas ’32 and William M. Light, Tulane ’31). Specifically, the fund will support the Men of Principle initiative for Beta undergraduates from all chapters.

Norman died in 1995 and upon the death of his wife, Eleanor, the Beta Foundation received a gift of $10,000. The Beta Foundation wishes it could have thanked Norman while he was alive!

Estate Gift Received in FY19 William E. Roth Wittenberg ’35 Though Bill died in 1989, in 2016, the Foundation learned that it would be the recipient of 1/12 of Bill’s trust upon the death of his granddaughter. $100,000 of the Trust was set aside as cash, and at the discretion of the trust officer, the Foundation may benefit annually until the bulk of the bequest is realized. This year, $5,000 was distributed, which was placed in endowment, per policy.

FOUNDATION HISTORY /// And Board Leadership The Beta Theta Pi Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity created in 1990 to attract and receive gifts to support leadership and academic opportunities. The 17-member Board of Directors meets semi-annually with the Foundation staff and Fraternity Board of Trustees to develop, measure and execute strategies aimed at advancing the work of the Men of Principle initiative.

Founders Fund is created and thus the concept of an educational foundation is introduced The concept of an educational foundation was first introduced in 1920 with the creation of the Founders Fund, a trust that was established by “various members of the Fraternity of Beta Theta Pi who desired to establish a permanent fund to honor the memory of the men who created, interpreted and exemplified the ideals of the Fraternity, which fund shall be devoted exclusively to charitable, scientific, literary and educational purposes.”

Beta Leadership Fund is established The BLF is an annual fundraising initiative that was launched to finance Beta Leadership Workshops and establishment of new chapters. Since its establishment, the Foundation has actively advanced the educational mission and goals of Beta Theta Pi toward the vision of the Fraternity.

Beta Theta Pi Foundation is established as a not-for-profit public foundation

Men of Principle initiative is launched as an educational initiative of the Foundation

Formerly known as the Founder’s Fund, the Beta Theta Pi Foundation has solicited and received contributions for needs and priorities established by the Fraternity’s Board of Trustees and prescribed by donors.

“Upon These Principles: A Campaign for Every Beta” successfully raises $20.1 million in cash and estate gift pledges

The Beta Leadership Fund sets annual goal of $1 million in unrestricted gifts and successfully reaches the goal with $1,006,468 collected in cash gifts

The Foundation and Administrative Office building campaign becomes known as the General Fraternity’s first successful capital campaign, raising $3.4 million for construction of the building and grounds owned by the Foundation.

2015

Beta launches the Auto-Kai Club, the Fraternity’s first recurring gift program More than 130 supporters utilize the Auto-Kai platform to establish reoccurring Beta Leadership Fund gifts in its first year.

“The Promises To Keep Campaign” surpasses $20 million goal with $20,439,517 in cash and estate gifts pledged The Campaign had three main objectives: 1. Expand access to Beta’s leadership programs 2. Technology upgrades and online resources 3. Building improvements for Beta’s Administrative Office and preservation of its archives
