Dear Brothers, Parents and Friends of Beta:

Chairman’s Letter

As newly appointed chairman, it gives me considerable pleasure to personally share with you the Beta Theta Pi Foundation’s 2008 Annual Report. What a year of Report achievement and focus it has been. This year’s publication – as you can tell from the cover – reinforces the parallels of the Beta Foundation’s work and that of “nature.” Believe it or not, the similarities are striking. And nothing summarizes the philosophy under which we’ve been working to improve our beloved Fraternity than the quote once penned by Nelson Henderson:

“The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.” We couldn’t agree more. While the pages that follow are chock-full of organizational/financial data and undergraduate-centered achievement, a primary purpose of this publication is to also thank those individuals and organizations who continue to provide their treasure in helping nurture and grow a brotherhood of purpose. In fact, a brotherhood of lifelong relevance to the lives of thousands of energetic young men across North America. The John and Nellie Wooden Institute for Men of Principle 2008

“A friend might well be reckoned the masterpiece of nature.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson 6 | Beta Theta Pi Foundation

I am hopeful you will take a few minutes to seriously digest and reflect on the work of the Beta Foundation, along with the important role you have played this past year in helping advance our personal and leadership development mission. Together, we are committed to “building men of principle for a principled life.” And like the undergraduates we develop on a daily basis, you matter, my friend. You matter a lot.

Of course, as you can imagine, now that the academic year is back in full swing, the Foundation is once again active rallying Betas and Friends of Beta across the land to support our annual fund drive, the Beta Leadership Fund. When called upon by Foundation Director Jonathan Brant and our staff in Oxford in the coming days, it’s my hope that you will give all you can so we can keep our important undergraduate leadership programs and services going. Young Betas everywhere are counting on all of us! Yes, as we take on another year of important challenges and opportunities, your annual support of the BLF is critical to the continuation of the high-caliber leadership programs and services that build strong Beta chapters at the local level. It’s these programs that provide a premier undergraduate experience – one that distinguishes Beta from all other fraternities. Again, let me stress how important you are to the continued progress of Beta Theta Pi. You truly are making a difference. Finally, I would like to recognize our two outgoing Foundation Board members, Jim Ellis, Missouri ’55 and recent Chairman Tom Hook, Miami ’81. Both have been so instrumental in providing the resources and leadership necessary to push the Men of Principle initiative and our Fraternity’s educational Foundation forward. Their contributions in both insight and encouragement have been instrumental. And we are grateful. Indeed, I am humbled to serve as your Foundation’s chairman in the coming year, my friends. With that, please know we will continue to be effective and efficient in garnering and managing the resources that make Beta Theta Pi one of North America’s greatest college fraternities. Sincerely and in ___kai___, Michael G. Feinstein, MIT ’82 Chairman Foundation Board of Directors

Merit Scholarships Beta Foundation Merit Scholarships The Beta Theta Pi Foundation’s merit scholarship program, instituted in 1949 by the Beta Theta Pi Board of Trustees, has enabled our members to achieve their academic endeavors by providing important financial assistance. Beta Theta Pi offered 69 scholarships — totaling $83,425 — to undergraduate and graduate student members of the Fraternity as well as sons and daughters of Betas who excelled in the areas of academics, chapter leadership and campus/community involvement. Their achievements and leadership range from officer roles within the chapter, student government and interfraternity council, to honorary societies such as Order of Omega, Phi Eta Sigma and Golden Key. This year’s scholarship recipients are active in varsity athletics, university-wide organizations and philanthropy. They are often Eagle Scouts, community volunteers, youth coaches and tutors. For more information about next year’s opportunities, log on to www.betathetapi.org. Scholarship forms and details will be available on the web site in early February. The deadline for submission is April 1. All scholarships will be awarded prior to the 170th General Convention in Phoenix, Arizona.

Discovering Beta Theta Pi’s True Principles

Applying Beta’s Principles to Daily Life

Championing Beta’s Principles for a Better Future

The John and Nellie Wooden Institute for Men of Principle, endowed by a gift of James A. (Jim) Collins, UCLA ’50 and his wife Carol, is a five-day values-based leadership experience that has garnered international attention and recognition from the Greek community. It continues to be a hallmark education program for the Fraternity.

The Donald W. English Beta Wilderness Challenge, endowed by a gift of Jeffrey N. Newton, Miami ’77 and his wife Carolyn, is a six-day outdoor leadership experience that takes Beta undergraduates through a bold agenda focusing on the principles and obligations of the Fraternity and a series of challenging outdoor elements that promote personal development.

Endowed by a gift of James J. Ellis, Missouri ’55 and his wife, Van, The Leadership Summit provides an opportunity for all regional directors, district chiefs and assistant district chiefs to meet annually in Oxford to focus on the future of Beta Theta Pi. Participants receive focused training on how to utilize all available resources of the General Fraternity, while at the same time learning how to better support undergraduates and advisors at the local level.

Embracing Beta’s Interfraternal Responsibility

Connecting “the Beta Spirit” with our Principled Future

Recruiting Men of Principle to Help Build Beta Theta Pi

The Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute (UIFI), hosted by the North-American Interfraternity Conference, is a five-day co-educational leadership institute that focuses on personal and chapter values, leadership development, team building and the art of building community.

Endowed gifts from family and friends of Beta’s past president, Peter F. Greiner, Minnesota ’51, The Leadership College provides leadership training and education for up-and-coming leaders of Beta chapters and colonies. Conducted during the Fraternity’s General Convention, this year’s program curriculum focused on Stephen Covey’s best-selling book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.

The Men of Principle Scholarship Grant Program supports chapters and colonies by helping them award merit scholarships to non-affiliated males who have distinguished themselves inside and outside the classroom. Applicants are not required to join the Fraternity, but it is through the application and interview process that Beta chapters and colonies meet some of the most accomplished, achievementoriented young men on campus.

Estate Planning Society

The Foundation is pleased to recognize those who have chosen to leave a legacy for the future of Beta Theta Pi through their will or estate plans. The Bridge Builder Society honors those loyal brothers and friends who have followed the example set by that famous “old man” immortalized by Miss Will Allen Dromgoole, one who builds the bridge for the young man who will follow after him. Why I decided to make an estate gift to Beta Theta Pi: My wife and I currently own and operate a small horse boarding and animal care facility in Lowell, Michigan. And while I became a Beta in the summer of 1970, I have enjoyed lifelong friendships with brothers from my time as an active member of the Delta Eta Chapter at Kettering University (formerly General Motors Institute). Last year my wife and I decided to make an estate gift of $25,000 to the Beta Theta Pi Foundation for members of the Delta Eta Chapter. I truly enjoy working with the active members of my chapter and it makes me proud to be a Beta! Estate Gifts Received in Fiscal 2008 When Ellen Ross, the wife of James M. Ross, North Carolina ’40, passed away this year, the Beta Foundation benefited from a percentage of their charitable remainder trust, equal to $37,500. Their daughter Lynda Bridger recalls that her father, who died in July 1999, “really loved the Fraternity . . . When in Chapel Hill, we always had to go by the Beta house.” A loyal Beta Leadership Fund supporter, Brother Ross made a gift to the annual fund every year since its inception in 1971! John A. Jenkins, Ohio State ’50, provided $10,000 for the Beta Foundation in his estate plans. Wife Margery confirmed that John, “a gentleman and a true Man of Principle,” was a loyal Beta and great supporter of the Beta Principle Leadership Fund Fund. She recalled fondly the 2005 General Convention in Scottsdale and how privileged John was to participate in Beta’s traditional Marching Line. James S. Wachs, Cincinnati ’55, an attorney specializing in estate planning, realized the importance of giving back to the Fraternity that gave him so much. A life insurance benefit of $5,500 was received shortly after his death in February 2008, and the Foundation will additionally benefit from Jim’s forethought and planning through a charitable remainder trust and a second life insurance policy. In his lifetime, Jim shared his time and talent through several volunteer positions within Beta Theta Pi, including service as General Treasurer. What a great Beta leader! “Jim always spoke so fondly and nostalgically about his undergraduate years as a Beta at the University of Cincinnati. He loved his lifelong association with the Fraternity and cherished the friendships that grew from it. Most of Jim’s shower song repertoire included Beta songs from his college days!” ~ Karen Wachs

The Beta Leadership Fund Annual and Lifetime Giving Societies The Beta Leadership Fund (BLF) is the lifeline of the Beta Theta Pi Foundation which supports essential educational and leadership programs. It is funded by gifts from Beta alumni, friends and families. The BLF welcomed 2,595 total donors in fiscal 2008, including 213 new alumni donors. Gifts totaling $669,477 were received (not including estate gifts.) BLF gifts underwrite the Men of Principle initiative, all educational training of emerging leaders and our professional development staff in Oxford. In turn, the General Fraternity is afforded the opportunity to increase services to chapters, colonies and advisors. Also included in this section are the Fraternity’s Lifetime Giving Societies, which reflect donors’ cumulative gifts for their lifetime, whether it be to the BLF, chapter funds or named leadership/ scholarship funds.

When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world. ~ John Muir 24 | Beta Theta Pi Foundation

The following list, in chapter order, reflects donations made to all funds June 1, 2007, through May 31, 2008. Consult the legend (throughout the listing) for symbols that depict the various annual and lifetime giving societies.

“Nature is man’s teacher. She unfolds her treasures to his search, unseals his eye, illumes his mind and purifies his heart; an influence breathes from all the sights and sounds of her existence.” ~ Alfred Billings Street

Christopher W. Cantu, Connecticut ’07 I know now that I cannot sacrifice the integrity, credibility, and safety of everyone for the few. It’s not right. Thanks for giving me a new perspective. This conference has changed my life. Not just in Beta but everywhere. My relationships and leadership have all benefited! The President’s Academy gave me something I can’t put a price on.

But some very energetic people have been recolonizing nearby, e. g. at William & Mary in Williamsburg and at Hampden-Sydney, not too far from my Richmond home. At 81, and retired, about all I am able to do is drop in, show my Fraternal Fifty card, maybe sing along, and wish them well. It isn’t so difficult to overlook my own mixed active experience, when I see men young enough to be my grandsons, actually living it!

Michael R. Okenquist, Villanova ’94 During the 16 years since my initiation, I have contributed to the Foundation to give other young colony members as well as Betas from my chapter and other chapters the opportunity to attend The Wooden Institute, The Leadership College, and other award-winning programs. I am so proud of the work our Foundation does to assist and encourage our young brothers - it makes it very easy to want to give back.

“I believe a leaf of grass is no less than the journey-work of the stars.” ~ Walt Whitman

Joseph B. Buchanan, Washington State ’53 What a great feeling of satisfaction it is to know that you have had a personal involvement in supplying some of the bricks for the ‘Bridge Builder,’ to provide a safe and productive path for others to follow. Our donations, large and small, go directly to channeling the leadership talents of our young men in a positive and fundamentally sound educational manner. This is a step toward ensuring that our future national and world leaders are well prepared now.

“Nature does not hurry yet everything is accomplished.” ~ Lao Tzu

Nolan Kent Scanlan, Knox ’07 The brotherhood that I’ve fostered with fellow Betas across the continent has been inspirational. We all share the same ideals and aspirations. To see all that can be accomplished when men work for something bigger than themselves is amazing. We had 73 men all consecutively jump through a rope without any mistakes. That was amazing. The leadership skills, especially leading by example, that I’ve learned will without a doubt benefit me, and more importantly, my chapter.

“Failure is nature’s plan to prepare you for great responsibilities.” ~ Napolean Hill

Theodore P. Labus, MD, Purdue ’86 In my second year of medical school I received a $750 scholarship from the Beta Foundation. While the amount of money was not staggering, it was certainly appreciated and very much needed. I had come from a lower middle class home and I already had plenty of school debt that was mounting. It was very kind of Beta to do so and unexpected. I told myself I would pay back the money when and if I ever finished school and could afford to do so. Thank you.

Matching Gifts Matching Gift Program Want to double or even triple your gift to the Beta Foundation? In recent years, many employers (companies/corporations/foundations) have established plans that provide incentives for their employees to make gifts to certified fraternity and sorority foundations. Typically, these are referred to as Matching Gift Programs, and more than 130 such programs have been identified. If you are employed by an organization listed here, inquire how you can take advantage of its Matching Gift Program, thereby boosting your personal donation substantially, often doubling or even tripling your gift! If you don’t see your company listed on this page, we recommend that you check with your employer to determine if a matching program exists. The Beta Theta Pi Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization and may be an eligible recipient. This page contains a list of organizations that have participated in our Matching Gifts Program. • This is a list of any company that has ever made a matching gift to the Foundation. • In Fiscal 2008, gifts totaling $21,360 were received as matching gifts.

“Nature hates calculators.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Alexander D. Snowden, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi ’06 “I have had the honor of serving as a Chapter Counselor for Colorado State University and now as District Chief XLI for University of Illinois and Eastern Illinois University since becoming an alumnus. Nothing has been more fulfilling than dedicating my free time to help young men develop and live The Three Great Principles that are instilled in us all. I would also challenge every alumnus to donate to this great cause and also challenge all alumni to offer some of your time to help a chapter or colony in your area grow and develop. In Texas alone there are chapters at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, and Texas-Arlington, and starting this fall we will return to Southern Methodist University. The reward and experience alone will show you not only what it means to be a Beta but the pride that you continue to make a difference in peoples lives.”

“This Fraternity has come down to us as a precious legacy. We have a distinct and definite obligation to cherish it, to add to it and to transmit it to those who are to follow after us in Beta Theta Pi. It is an inspiring thought that idealism persists through the ages. An even finer conception is that of adding to such a treasure to make it more valuable, more potent, to another generation.”

Doug and I met when I was a junior at Georgia State University and he was a sophomore at Georgia Tech. We met through my brother who was also a Beta. Beta meant the world to both of us and Doug was always so proud when he met a fellow Beta in his travels after leaving school. Throughout his career and his travels he very proudly spoke of his college experience and the many brothers he had at the Beta house. Doug suffered with brain cancer for 15 months and received so many calls from his brothers and also many of them visited during his illness. This included Bill Manofsky, Paul Heim and Steve Ferro. All had to travel a great distance to be with Doug during this time. I could not imagine a more worthy organization for Doug to be remembered by. While there are important causes that would have benefited from a donation in Doug’s memory, the many donations made by friends and family truly honored Doug’s spirit and his commitment to the brotherhood of Beta Theta Pi. Sincerely, Jody Staszesky Wife of Doug Staszesky, Georgia Tech ’81

Ways to Give

In the finest tradition of our Fraternity, benefits flow to our young men from those who have gone before. Each of us is asked to help provide these benefits in turn. To promote our educational and charitable purposes, the Beta Theta Pi Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity, was created to attract and receive gifts to support leadership and scholarship opportunities. Cash or Check: This is the most popular method for making a donation to Beta Theta Pi. The Foundation’s address is P.O. Box 6277, Oxford, Ohio 45056. Credit Card: Beta Theta Pi accepts VISA, American Express, MasterCard and Discover. This method can be used for monthly, quarterly and yearly contributions. Appreciated Stock/Securities: Multiple benefits are realized when using appreciated stock as a means for making a gift to the Beta Theta Pi Foundation. Our professional staff in Oxford can work with you and your financial advisor to make a gift of this nature, which can benefit the Foundation’s award-winning leadership programs, while at the same time provide a charitable tax-benefit to the donor. Corporate Matching Gifts: Numerous companies match an employee’s personal donation to non-profit, tax exempt foundations. Check the listing of companies affiliated with the Foundation on page 41, or ask if your employer participates in a gift-matching program.
