Simple and to the point. That’s Hagan Ainsworth’s philosophy about what makes a good volunteer. Ainsworth not only volunteers for the Beta Omicron Chapter at the University of British Columbia as the risk management advisor; he also devotes significant hours fostering their alumni association as well. Brother Ainsworth balances his influence on the undergraduates and the alumni in Vancouver, B.C. Canada. He understands the importance of lifelong brotherhood and the impact the Fraternity has on members young and old.

Ainsworth is a testament to UBC’s success as a chapter, and he serves as role model to all of his brothers. He recognizes the significance of volunteering because “it is an important part of being a well-rounded, fulfilled individual.” He takes great pride in knowing he and the other advisors and alumni influenced a young man’s life from the time he meets the young man at a rush event and sees him grow into the next instrumental businessman, family man and volunteer for Beta Theta Pi. It takes a great team of advisors to impact young men throughout North America.

Ainsworth notes, “It’s critical for a chapter to have qualified, experienced volunteers as advisors and running the alumni association.” Further, he remarks on the value of having a “good balance of ages, personalities and skill sets” that form a well-rounded volunteer corps.

Beta is a lifelong commitment, one that takes men and women, young and old to help one another live the three principles and seven obligations – volunteers who exemplify “___kai___.” Are you willing to honor your call for mutual aid and assistance? [From the Editor] Hey, you. Do something.

That’s right. I’m talking to you.

Now that I’ve got your attention, I hope you’ll hang with me for the next three minutes. That’s all it’s going to take for you to read this editorial. Okay? All right, then; let’s get to it.

As depicted on the cover, the Fraternity’s Board of Trustees has been engaging in a comprehensive strategic planning process for the last 18 months. All of this has been aimed at strengthening the fabric of our Fraternity toward one specific Mission: to develop men of principle for a principled life. A refined Vision and statement of Core Values is being introduced, along with four Strategic Priorities, which you can read more about on pages 10-13.

So…what’s the bottom line with this refined strategic plan?

Beta can’t be all things to all people. And yet, wherever we do choose to invest our human and financial resources, we must think big, be aggressive and, above all else, stay focused.

What is not articulated in this new effort, however, is something that really deserves an unvarnished, undiplomatic appeal. Simply put, it’s about the Fraternity’s capacity to achieve the plan’s desired outcomes. In more direct terms, it’s about each and every Beta doing something to help the Fraternity build strong chapters and develop young men’s abilities. That’s right. You need to do something for Beta Theta Pi. Now, this editorial isn’t really focused on the 1,000 individuals who are already volunteering at the local chapter level or the 3,500 generous donors (1,033 of which are undergraduates) who provide gifts every year to the Beta Leadership Fund to make Beta’s award-winning leadership programs possible. They are certainly already doing their part.

But what about the rest of you – the remaining 120,000 Beta alumni? Other than skimming the Beta magazine, gathering together every five or so years for a pledge class reunion or swinging by the chapter house if you happen to be in town for Homecoming, what are you actively doing on a consistent basis to strengthen your Fraternity?

You may find it shocking, but the brutal reality is that less than three percent of all Betas give to the Beta Leadership Fund and therefore fund the Men of Principle initiative each year. Less than three percent! And in terms of volunteerism, the record of performance is even worse. Of our 125,000 living alumni, less than one percent is actively involved with a local Beta chapter.

One percent!

Pardon my bluntness, Brothers. But that’s just sad… We can do better.

Just imagine how much stronger our chapters would be if we could get 10% of our alumni involved by volunteering time and contributing treasure. Think about it: 12,500 alumni involved with nearly five times the current contributions to the Beta Leadership Fund. With that kind of involvement and leadership funding, do you think your chapter’s undergraduates would take Beta at dear old alma mater to the next level? You better believe they would.

Norman Vincent Peale had a great saying that really gets to the heart of Beta Theta Pi these days: “Plan the work, and then work the plan.”

Indeed, the Trustees have put together a comprehensive yet focused plan for the next three years. Now – in order to bring it to life – we need to work the plan.

You are a part of the “we”, Brother. It’s time for you to do something.

Interfraternally Speaking November Midterm Election Results in Elected Betas

Beta Theta Pi expands its presence in the United States Congress after the recent 2010 November election, totaling seven elected officials. Robert Dold, Denison ’91, Joe Heck, Penn State ’84, David McKinley, Purdue ’69, and Patrick Meehan, Bowdoin ’78, were elected to the United States House of Representatives from Illinois, Nevada, West Virginia and Pennsylvania, respectively. Michael Bennet, Weselyan ’87, joins Senators Richard Lugar, Denison ’54, and Bill Nelson, Florida/ Yale ’65, in the United States Senate.

Having served multiple terms in office, Beta Theta Pi also recognizes and thanks outgoing Congressmen John Spratt, Davidson ’64, and Zack Space, Kenyon ’83, for their service to South Carolina and Ohio.

XΩ – Earlier this year, Chi Omega initiated its 300,000th member.

Chi Omega is the first – and to date only – national sorority to reach this milestone. Congratulations, Chi-O!

ΦDΘ – Phi Delta Theta has surpassed its fundraising goal of $100,000 for Iron Phi, a program meant to inspire members to achieve their athletic goals while helping The ALS Association fight Lou Gehrig’s disease. Check out their site at ironphi.org.

ΚAΘ – Kappa Alpha Theta has embarked on a mental health initiative, Sisters Supporting Sisters®. Through partnerships developed with mental health professionals, the program is the first Greek initiative dedicated to promoting all aspects of mental health and wellness.

ΣΑΕ – Sigma Alpha Epsilon released the newest version of its risk management manual, Minerva’s Shield. It was made not only for its members and host institutions, but to help all fraternity and sorority chapters adopt a culture of safety.

DΥ – Congratulations to Delta Upsilon for receiving the association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors (AFA) 2010 Excellence in Educational Programming Award for their Global Service Initiative. DU unites their competencies and principles with the Negril, Jamaica community. Members travel to, study in, and work with the community.

[Marching Along] Shining Stars of

Beta Theta Pi

Stephen C. Sherwood, Ohio Wesleyan ’70, was honored with the 2010 Alumni Award for his service to Ohio Wesleyan University.

According to the University’s citation, he “is an exemplary volunteer” and has shown lifelong dedication to his alma mater. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 28 years. In addition, he actively supports OWU’s Men’s Soccer and constructed the first ROTC Reunion on campus. He is a true go-getter and uses his humor to help further OWU’s cause.

The Marching Along section is back and full of great personal Beta stories. From war veterans and honorary professors to major benefactors and marathon runners, this Marching Along section features some of the shining stars of Beta Theta Pi. Read on to learn more about some of the great achievements of brothers throughout North America. Chris Griffes, Auburn ’78, is literally “marching along” as he strives to join the 500-member club for running a marathon in every state.

Griffes has completed marathons in 22 of the 50 states, including Alaska. He particularly remembers his run in Florida at the National Breast Cancer Marathon to honor his wife Laurie’s fight against breast cancer. World Food Prize Winner, Philip E. Nelson, Purdue ’56, will have the Food Science building named in his honor.

Serving on the Purdue faculty for 50 years, Nelson is a retired Food Science department professor. “It’s one dream I never imagined,” he exclaims. Brother Nelson is thrilled about this honor and looks forward to what will unravel in the department at Purdue.

Purple Heart awardee Sgt. and Brother Neil Avant, San Diego State ’01, is making the most of his post-military situation. At the age of 33, his military career ended after being attacked by a disguised bomber in Baghdad. Instead of letting his injuries get the best of him, he, along with many other wounded veterans, is taking the opportunity to study at schools like UCLA that provide all-expenses-paid entrepreneurial “boot camps” for business-minded servicemen and women. Brother Avant cultivated his intellect and now owns the Mettle Falcon Group. Brother Avant is proud to be one of the many Betas who served his country in the time of war, as he states, ”You will find the core values of our Fraternity reflected in the character of these men, as it has been for generations of Betas who have served our country in a time of war.”

During the summer, Boy Scouts of America celebrated its 100th anniversary.

Distinguished Eagle Scout and Silver Buffalo Award recipient, Stephen D. Bechtel Jr., Colorado/Purdue ’46 contributed his treasure to help further the Scouts’ mission. With Bechtel’s record-breaking $50 million gift, The Summit: Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in West Virginia will become a reality for scouts in 2013.

On July 24, 2010, The Alpha Alpha Chapter Alumni Association at Columbia honored Jim Mullin, Columbia ’77, for his 17 years of service as president of the association. Under Brother Mullin, the association oversaw the rebirth of the Alpha Alpha Chapter and led the chapter house renovations from 2003-2005. Congratulations Brother, and thank you for laying a great foundation for Alpha Alpha!

Six Beta Omega Chapter brothers from the 1952 class at the University of Washington spent time reminiscing and celebrating their 80th birthdays on a cruise to Alaska this past June. Since pledging Beta Theta Pi, the members continue to enjoy their long-lasting brotherhood.

The 1959 to 1963 Michigan State University brothers made a commitment. Not only did they pledge to honor Beta’s Three Great Principles, they pledged lifelong brotherhood to heart.

For the past 33 years, these brothers and their wives gather to continue their “friendship that will last through life.” Whether it was at a resort in Michigan or visiting brothers in Boston, New York, Chicago or San Diego, these chapter brothers honor the call to lifelong brotherhood.

Members of the 1983 class at DePauw University reunite at Lake Wawasee in Syracuse, Indiana in late July, where 14 out of 17 attended this celebration of brotherhood.

General Fraternity Archivist Eric Eickhoff, Ohio Wesleyan ’00, and his father, Rick Eickhoff, General Fraternity ’02, cultivated some brotherhood in the Williamsburg, Virginia area with local alumni. Pictured here are some of the members in attendance along with Leadership Consultant Brian Webber, Loyola Marymount ’09. Their meeting was an effort to grow volunteerism in the area to help support one another and the Zeta Upsilon Chapter at William & Mary.

Wisconsin brothers Tom Detienne ’52, Sam McKay ’54, Billy Lowe ’57 and Jack Pearson ’55, sent a story featuring their chapter brothers who make a habit out of attending Wisconsin’s homecoming every year. Tom Detienne ’57 and Sam McKay ’54 are Badger faithful; Tom has attended every homecoming since 1948 for a total of 62 homecoming! Between Tom and Sam, they have attended 119 homecoming games! Pictured with Tom and Sam is a fellow chapter brother, Billy Lowe ’57, who played halfback during his tenure as an undergraduate.

Trustees advance 18-month strategic planning process

Six months prior to the 2009 General Convention in Phoenix, Arizona, many members in Beta Theta Pi recognized the direction the Fraternity was heading was stronger than the day the Men of Principle initiative was officially launched. But with this direction, and some 10 years later, there seemed to be a lack of focus with too many priorities competing for equal attention – and resources.

Director of the Planning Committee for the Board of Trustees, Scott Allen, Minnesota ’95, observed, “It’s when we are trying to do everything and be everything to everyone that we dilute our resources and ultimately diminish our impact. Now is a really exciting time for our organization. We can really embrace what we have learned in the past 10 or 15 years and we can also…chart a course for the future.”

The Board of Trustees and other stakeholders of the Fraternity decided to embark upon a listening-tour to hear what the needs, wants and questions were of the Fraternity’s constituents and, indeed, strategize a short- and long-term plan for Beta’s future.

Administrative secretary, Judson Horras, Iowa State ’97, recalls, “It really kicked off at the 170th General Convention in Phoenix, Arizona, where a cross-section of 100 of our constituents met to discuss the current state of the Fraternity at the Strategic Thinking Summit.” The Strategic Thinking Summit consisted of undergraduates, alumni, Friends of Beta, university officials and executives of Beta’s peer fraternities and sororities. After The Summit’s conclusion, five themes rose to the surface:

1. A large number of Beta’s members still don’t know or act in alignment with Beta’s core values.

2. Members don’t always recruit with Beta’s values.

3. The Fraternity does not have enough good volunteers and staff.

4. Less is more. When there are too many priorities, nothing becomes a priority.

5. All too often, the Fraternity allows itself to fall victim to the fraternity stereotype (both externally and internally).

The major theme that drew the attention of the Board of Trustees, Foundation Board of Directors, General Fraternity Officers and Administrative Office Staff, Horras notes, “was that many members do not understand the core purpose of the Fraternity to the degree that they should.” This led to a thorough analysis and revision of the Men of principle initiative’s Mission and Vision statements, along with the adding of deliberate, reinforcing Core Value language (see side bar). By refining the core purpose language to make it more clear and concise, the fundamentals of the Fraternity can now be readily explained and communicated.

“What Men of principle did,” explains General Secretary David Schmidt, South Florida ’92, “was connect the dots for members in our Fraternity to understand better the Ritual and purpose of Beta Theta Pi. With the current revisions to the Men of principle initiative’s Mission, Vision and Core Values, we are simplifying them and boiling them down so the rest of the population, looking from the outside in, can truly grasp what we stand for as an organization.” When Beta is truly transparent in terms of its purpose for existence, its members and supporting constituents are better able to hold the organization accountable and, likewise, reward it for mission, vision and values adherence.

In the coming months and years, Beta’s leadership will strive to be proactive on the needs of the Fraternity as well as look ahead for ways to constantly align standards, programs and services with Beta’s core values. In order for the strategic plan to be effective and inclusive of all the Fraternity’s members, “The Mission, Vision and Core Values must weave throughout the fabric of our organization, whether it’s through educational programming, award-giving, social media, Convention, recruitment, chapter education, self-governance and volunteer support.

Our members must know and strive to live the Mission, Vision and Core Values,” Scott Allen shares. In this realigning, recalibration exercise, Beta has an improved roadmap to chart its focus for the future.

This underlying foundation and future-oriented roadmap is consistent with where the Fraternity is today and where it is heading. Specifically, it also includes four Strategic Priorities that help align Beta with its Men of principle initiative and center the Fraternity’s administrative and programmatic actions accordingly. The four priorities are Self-Governance, Education, Recruitment and Volunteers.

General Fraternity President Dr. Tom Purinton, Kansas State ’63, emphasizes, “In everything that we do, we want to be looking through these four lenses. By doing so, it will help the Fraternity with consistency and provide a refocusing and emphasis on our founding principles.” Instead of spreading itself so thin, these four Strategic Priorities help focus the Fraternity’s volunteer, staff and undergraduate leadership on a consistent framework for Beta Theta Pi’s present and future needs.

Under each of the four priorities there is a subset of directives that will be emphasized to all of Beta’s constituents: Self-Governance:

consistent self-governance.

Beta Theta Pi fosters a culture of individual accountability through upholding clear and concise expectations.

As a vice president on the Board of Trustees in 1998, Dan Westra, Virginia Tech ’76, initially oversaw the development of the Men of principle initiative and, this summer at the 2010 General Convention, was re-elected as a member of the Board of Trustees. Working closely with both the Men of Principle initiative and the current strategic planning effort, Westra acknowledges the effectiveness of this plan, “This strategic plan takes what we’re doing well and builds on it.” Furthermore, Doug Houser, chairman of the Beta Theta Pi Foundation Board of Directors adds, “The strategic planning process is so very vital to the success of Beta Theta Pi. The four priorities that rose to the surface for our organization truly allow for our members to see how their time and treasure can make a great impact on the Fraternity.”

The strategic planning has been set in motion to build upon a firm foundation, and it is a process that continually evolves to meet the current needs of the Fraternity.

The four priorities will continue to take shape over the coming months throughout leadership development curriculum, communication strategies, campus expansion projects, Foundation resource development, volunteer recruitment and training, new member recruitment and education, member accountability and administrative office staffing.

Beta Goes to Washington!

R E C A P P I N G T H E 1 7 1 ST G E N E R A L C O N V E N T I O N There is a lot to be proud of in Beta Theta Pi, and the 2010 General Convention provided an opportunity to celebrate those achievements with old friends as well as new ones. Undergraduates, alumni, Beta Sweethearts, Friends of Beta and other guests descended on the U.S. capital, filling the Crystal City Marriott with Beta’s special brand of friendship and fellowship. The success of our Great and Good Fraternity has always been the result of cooperation, so there was no better Convention theme than that of the Union Literary Society: Firmam Consensus Facit – Cooperation Makes Strength.

CELEBRATION AND RECOGNITION

The obvious fact to celebrate was that Beta’s undergraduate population is the strongest it’s been in ages – membership increased by 9.7% as compared to last year, GPA is the highest it’s ever been in Beta’s 171-year history and the average chapter size has grown from 49 in 1997 to 60 this past year. Beta has proved once and for all that quality and quantity can be mutually achieved.

Beta celebrated its crown as the Singing Fraternity as the Beta Four from Oklahoma State dazzled Convention attendees with their perfect harmonies.

But these young men weren’t the only ones carrying a tune – nearly 100 Convention-goers carried on the Convention Chorus tradition that, according to General Fraternity Chorister and former Administrative Secretary Steve Becker, Florida ’69, was revitalized by former General Fraternity Chorister Shelby L. Molter, Miami ’54, who passed away in 2008. Fittingly, the award recognizing the winner of the annual singing competition was changed at this year’s Convention to bear forever the name of the dearly departed Beta singer.

Convention attendees took a few minutes to honor one of the greatest Betas to ever live, the legendary John Robert Wooden, Purdue ’32. “He was an incredible Beta and an incredible American,” said Senator Richard Lugar, Denison ’54, who also shared that it was his own Beta brother’s father-in-law who recruited Wooden into the Beta Mu Chapter at Purdue. The legendary UCLA basketball 14

Another great Beta was honored with the Fraternity’s highest award for individual achievement, the Oxford Cup. Bill Nelson, Florida/Yale ’65 has served in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, and is the fourth Beta to fly in space. General Fraternity President Tom Purinton, Kansas State ’63, awarded Brother Nelson the Oxford Cup on stage with three former Cup winners – Astronaut Joe Allen, DePauw ’59; News man Howard Fineman, Colgate ’70; and fellow Senator Richard Lugar, Denison ’54 (see photo below). Yet another reason to celebrate in Washington D.C. this summer was the release of a new Beta Book. Senator Lugar unveiled and introduced Beta’s newest addition, Beta Statesmen – Lifelong Commitment to Serve. Filled with a litany of Betas who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in public service to the United States and Canada, this 216-page treasure shares just how powerful the Beta principles can be when one puts others before self. Erv Johnson, Idaho ’53, former Editor of The Beta Theta Pi and author of Son of the Stars, signed copies of his new book alongside the Senator, a true Beta Statesman in his own right.

DEEPENING THOSE FRATERNAL BONDS

The Beta Foundation hosted the inaugural John Reily Knox Dinner for all donors who gave $1,500 to the Beta Leadership Fund this past year or pledged to do so this coming fiscal year. Chapter President Andrew Lane, John Carroll ’12, spoke about what the BLF has helped him accomplish personally. “I was an undergraduate student who wanted nothing to do with the Greek system,” he said. “But I learned about Beta and saw that its morals, values and principles matched up with what I was raised with.” He went on to ask, “Why can’t fraternity and sorority members be the ones who change the world?

I can stand up here and say that with the funds you have all contributed, this has already happened.”

THE OFFICIAL BUSINESS OF BETA THETA PI

A sometimes-overlooked aspect of the General Convention is the fact that it is also the organization’s main governing body. “It was a true annual shareholders meeting,” mentioned Jeff Rundle, Kansas State ’03, General Convention President and soon-to-be Director of Chapter Services. “These chapter presidents are our shareholders, and it was great to see the administrative secretary deliver a State of the Fraternity Address.”

Beta Theta Pi: the Omicron Chapter at Virginia, the Alpha Rho Chapter at Washington and Lee, the Delta Eta Chapter at Kettering A, and the Eta Epsilon Chapter at John Carroll.

“It’s just such an honor,” said delegate Andrew Porter-Price, Connecticut ’11. “Knowing that I am playing an active role in the direction of this organization is inspiring.”

In other business, four brothers were congratulated on their elections to the Fraternity Board of Trustees: general secretary, David Schmidt, South Florida ’92; vice presidents Paul Swartz, Kansas State ’64, Dan Westra, Virginia Tech ’76 and Vince Mikolay, Bethany ’00. Three other brothers were thanked as they concluded their voluntary service to the Fraternity: Cal Black, Wabash ’66, Foundation Board of Directors; Marty Haskell, Ohio Wesleyan ’68, Vice President of the Board of Trustees; and Charlie Warner, Lynchburg ’87, General Secretary.

“Brothers,” announced Scott Allen, Minnesota ’95, Chairman of the Trustees’ Planning and Program Development Committee. “Your Board of Trustees has been hard at work for the past 18 months planning for the next evolution of the Fraternity’s Men of Principle renaissance.” Allen, a former district chief, was instrumental in helping to plan for the organization’s future. “We have achieved tremendous successes,” he remarked, “but there is more work to be done – and when everything is a priority…nothing is.”

Incoming General Secretary David Schmidt, South Florida ’92 assumed the podium before a grand audience during Saturday night’s Celebration Banquet and rhetorically asked, “What are the core needs for undergraduate brothers to enjoy the rich Beta experience that they deserve? What is necessary to develop men of principle for a principled life?” The answer lies in Beta Theta Pi’s Strategic Plan, outlined on page 10.

If there is one takeaway from this past year’s General Convention, it is that there are great things happening in Beta Theta Pi. However, this will only remain true if Betas continue to cooperate, and in the next 100 years, maintain that pioneering spirit that has characterized this organization for the previous 171. The Knox award raises the bar for chapters in such areas as ritual, leadership, community service, campus involvement, and even singing. Since the award’s inception in 1997, only 35 chapters have achieved it. Chapters that achieve this status are truly shining examples of how a chapter can live out this year’s Convention theme of “Cooperation Makes Strength.”

The Oxford Cup

The Fraternity awards the Oxford Cup in recognition of achievement of the highest order by a Beta.

Recipients must be loyal members of Beta Theta Pi, who have brought honor to the Fraternity through distinguished service and accomplishments in their chosen professional fields.

The Oxford Cup was developed in 1984 by then President Peter E. Van de Water, St. Lawrence ’58, and General Secretary B. Hume Morris, Centre ’68. Brother Morris also wrote the award ceremony and designed the Cup, a smaller version of the Pater Knox Golden Wedding Loving Cup.

Brother Nelson received the Oxford Cup on stage during the 171st General Convention in Washington, D.C. this past summer. He has served in the U.S. House of Representatives, the Florida State Cabinet and currently serves in the United States Senate. As a senator, Nelson has worked to prevent identity theft for consumers, created legislation to stop unsolicited e-mails to individuals and businesses and worked with men and women in the armed forces to ensure their proper equipment needs were met. Nelson also became the fourth Beta to fly in space, joining Joseph P. Allen, DePauw ’59, Kenneth D. Cameron, MIT ’71 and Paul J. Weitz, Penn State ’54.

Brother Cromer was awarded the Oxford Cup in conjunction with the 90th anniversary celebration of the Gamma Theta Chapter at Washington State University on September 18th. General Fraternity President Tom Purinton, Kansas State ’63, was on-hand to present the award and offer a few words about servant leadership. Brother Cromer exemplified this trait in his life, dedicating 50 years to national security and space exploration. He flew in the Air Force, tested space crafts for NASA, and after being involved in more than one hundred space and missile launches in his military career, found the time in retirement to help recolonize his Gamma Theta Chapter at Washington State. — Geoffrey P. Mark is a junior at Wabash College and a member of Beta Theta Pi. He is also a Type 1 diabetic, and has been since he was 18 months old. One Friday night during his junior year, Mark fell ill. It didn’t appear life-threatening, but according to his roommate’s phone call, Mark had been up off and on all night.

The phone rang, and it was Mark.

He was not himself - he slurred his speech, telling me how awful he felt. I knew he had to get to the ER immediately. His brothers had already made the courageous decision to call EMS, and were with him waiting for the ambulance. He was taken away within a few minutes.

Without a doubt, Mark’s Beta brothers saved his life. His blood sugar was the highest anyone at the hospital had ever seen on a patient not in a coma, due to a combination of a stomach virus, a faulty blood test meter and a kink in his insulin pump. The chance of all three things happening at once is unreal.

Luckily for us, Mark goes to Wabash and is a member of Beta Theta Pi. Mark’s brothers alerted EMS (per my instruction) to his diabetic situation, got him registered at the hospital, and continually contacted us with updates

on his condition. They took turns sitting with him in the ER and updating me constantly as I drove from Fort Wayne to Crawfordsville. They stayed at the hospital with him until I arrived, and would not leave after I arrived either.

They took me back to the chapter house to help gather a bag for him. Two of the boys’ families offered me a place to sleep and shower - I had never met either family. Numerous boys texted and called with good wishes for the two days we were in the hospital. The young men contacted Mark’s professors to alert them to his condition and let them know he would miss some classes and tests early in the week. They followed up with those professors on Monday and Tuesday. Mark is now back at Wabash, healthy and fine.

Beta Theta Pi reflects all that is good in the young men at Wabash. They think critically, they care about their brothers, and they react responsibly. They are polite, caring and giving young men.

Middle Tennessee State University & Texas Tech University Beta Theta Pi means different things to so many across North America, and though that is oftentimes the beauty of such a treasured organization, there must be standards to which a group of men is held if they are to continue the legacy of the three stars. It is with regret – and hope – that alumni and the General Fraternity were forced to close two chapters in the past few months: the Epsilon Theta Chapter at Middle Tennessee State University, and the Delta Mu Chapter at Texas Tech University.

At the beginning of this past year, the Epsilon Theta Chapter was given an ultimatum from its own alumni: “... raise your GPA and begin repaying your debt to the General Fraternity and University, or face closure.” The chapter membership unfortunately failed to respond – earning a 2.25 Chapter GPA and failing to make significant repayment of its debt -- leaving no other option than to close.

Unfortunately, it’s often an escalation of incidents over an extended period of time that leads to a chapter’s closure, not just one big event. This was exactly the case at Texas Tech, as the chapter continued to deal with member insubordination relative to established policies toward alcohol abuse, drug use, theft and academics. While there are no doubt outstanding young men who are members of both of these chapters, culture is stronger than any individual, and self-governance becomes a façade when there exist individuals who are unwilling to commit to living the values of Beta Theta Pi. The Fraternity will continue to work with University officials and each chapter’s respective alumni to develop a mutually beneficial timetable for re-establishment.

for a principled life Beta Theta Pi Welcomed Back to the University of Kentucky The Wildcats at the University of Kentucky welcomed back Beta Theta Pi with 43 outstanding young men ready to learn about the illustrious history and ritual of the Fraternity. The four-man expansion team, charged with rebuilding Beta’s Epsilon Omicron Chapter at the University of Kentucky, completed its mission. Director of Expansion Allen Hardin, Oregon ’09, led the team of full-time staff members from Oxford, Ohio: Brian Webber, Loyola Marymount ’09, TJ Hutchings, Oklahoma ’10 and John Reineke, Central Michigan ’09. They were on-site for nearly four weeks meeting students and educating them about the opportunity to be part of the recolonization. The men they recruited bring a lot to the table as RAs, Governor’s Scholars, accomplished athletes, Eagle Scouts, even an MBA candidate. The upperclassmen pledges have a cumulative GPA of 3.63, while

the first-year students have a high school cumulative 3.75 GPA. Brother Webber will remain on campus as the colony educator to help develop these promising young men of principle.

One of the tough lines to cross as an undergraduate is garnering parent support to join a fraternity. Duncan King, Kentucky ’14, a first-year student and founding father at UK, was at first discouraged by his mother to join a fraternity. His mother, Kathy Gosnell, recalls her impressions of fraternities, “I remember fraternities from my days in college and their parties were about the only thing I knew them to do. That was not the environment that I wanted to send my son into.” Duncan was happy to respond that Beta Theta Pi “develops men of principle for a principled life,” and did not tear brothers down in a stereotypical way. Add to that

the wonderful stories of brotherhood she continues to hear through her son and Beta’s Facebook page, she now supports her son’s decision and has the “peace of mind that Duncan is following a path that can only lead to good things.”

The road ahead will be bright for Epsilon Omicron. As the first University of Kentucky President, James K. Patterson, Hanover 1855, stated in his 1914 endorsement of opening a chapter at UK, “These are men of conspicuous ability, high character, fine attainments and great moral worth.” His sentiments ring true for the 43 refounding fathers in Lexington, and it is a call to action for them to earn the badge and proudly bear the name of Beta Theta Pi. — Timothy S. Eta Epsilon, Beta’s Newest Chapter It is a time of leadership and moving forward for the newly-chartered Eta Epsilon Chapter at John Carroll University. This summer 21 actives, alumni and advisors traveled to Washington, D.C. for the 171st General Convention where the delegates unanimously granted JCU its charter.

We were also proud to have earned six General Fraternity awards. In November we held a weekend-long celebration to commemorate our chapter installation.

The weekend kicked off with Carroll’s Got Talent, our annual philanthropic event, and a family dessert hour. The next day we held our official Installation Ceremony

in addition to a special Installation Mass attended by parents and many members of the JCU community. Following Mass, we enjoyed the Installation Banquet held at the Canterbury Club in conjunction with the Cleveland Area Alumni Appreciation Dinner, hosted by the General Fraternity’s Board of Trustees. It was especially memorable to have the Board preside over our Installation Ceremony.

This semester we also welcomed nine new members into our Zeta Class. Eta Epsilon hosted two weeks of recruitment events, some of which focused on Beta’s

principle of giving back to the community.

The chapter is proud to announce its new philanthropic association with Milestones Autism Organization, which provides the tools for a better life for individuals with autism, their families and the professionals who support them.

Renewing the Historic Alpha Rho On October 2nd the Alpha Rho Chapter celebrated regaining its charter with a Chapter Installation Ceremony in the historic Lee Chapel. We greatly appreciate the support of our brothers from District 16 and elsewhere for their help in attaining this goal.

Looking to build on the positive momentum from this summer, we are especially focused on having a successful recruitment in an effort to surpass last year’s record-size, 19-man pledge class.

Additionally, this past spring, Alpha Rho held its first “Beta-Theta Pie Eating Contest” philanthropy event with the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. The contest had a great turnout and we were able

Over the past semester, the Delta Theta Chapter continued to establish itself as one of the premier fraternities on the University of Alabama campus. We initiated 45 young men into our brotherhood, many of whom were student government leaders, varsity athletes and excellent students at their respective high schools. Another highlight was hosting an annual late night pancake dinner with the Delta Delta Delta Sorority to raise money for the St. Jude’s Children’s Cancer Research Hospital. The Delta Beta Chapter expanded its numbers with the addition of 37 new members, raising our overall chapter size to more than 120. We are currently in the process of reinstalling our annual philanthropy, Beta Theta Spike, a volleyball tournament open to the entire campus. Last semester, the chapter’s intramural basketball team finished first among Greeks and second among all intramural teams. This fall, the chapter won another championship in 3-on-3 basketball and looks to repeat last year’s soccer championship. Improvements in academics during the fall semester should place Beta among the highest organizations on campus.

The Delta Sigma Chapter of Beta Theta Pi hit the ground running during fall quarter 2010 with its strongest fall quarter recruitment since rechartering. During recruitment, 75 men were recruited with 26 bids given and 17 bids accepted. The philanthropy chairman is organizing a fall quarter service project with the organization Think Together. Additionally, he is planning for the spring quarter philanthropy event, Dragon Skate Race. Our 26th Annual Walkathon for Diabetes was very successful in raising awareness of diabetes in northeast Ohio. It raised over $4,000 for the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland. We are looking forward to our 13th-annual Ski-a-thon which raises money for helmet awareness on the ski slopes. The brothers at the Epsilon Kappa Chapter are doing their best to stay afloat. Within the last year, we paid off more than half of an inherited $8,000 debt and continue to make strides with fundraising to pay the rest by December 2010. On October 14, Fraternity President Tom Purinton visited the Castle on the Rock and shared Beta wisdom with the chapter. We held an art gallery philanthropic event on November 13, where local artists sold their art at a formal auction held in the chapter house. All profits were donated to our charity.

The Delta Chapter is off to a strong start this year. We are currently the largest chapter on campus with 78 members.

The brothers of Delta now have athletes in four sports, including seven soccer players and ten swimmers. We currently have several members in academic programs of distinction at DePauw and had three brothers initiated into Phi Beta Kappa last spring. The colony started the semester well, being awarded the prestigious Centennial Award for the second consecutive year for having the highest IFC grade point average on campus. With a 10-person new member class for the fall semester, the men worked hard to prepare for homecoming activities with the ladies of Kappa Delta. In the coming weeks, the entire colony plans to participate in a campus-wide walking event sponsored by EIU’s Sexual Assault Counseling and Information Services. Very few individuals have received this honor and even fewer organizations. Beta looks to keep the momentum going and the energy high all semester.

Our recruitment went fairly well this semester. Initially we were looking at approximately a 15-man pledge class. Unfortunately, many of these men were freshmen and they opted to defer until spring 2011. We were, nonetheless, excited to recruit seven quality men. As far as our recruitment strategies were concerned, we focused entirely on non-alcoholic recruitment. Primarily, we held events that were based on meeting and getting to know the brothers, rather than pressuring the recruits to join a fraternity. Last semester, the men of Alpha Tau ranked second in grades for fraternities (falling short of first by .008), maintained an average of 33 philanthropy hours per member and won Alpha Tau’s ninth Knox Award. In recent news, Alpha Tau held a successful alumni weekend, where over 50 alumni participated in a game day tailgate and golf tournament. Also, Alpha Tau has already supported three philanthropies this year, which raised funds and packaged 116,000 food packs for needy children in Zimbabwe. Lastly, the chapter hosted its annual Beta Burrito Bash philanthropy on November 12, benefiting the American Cancer Society.

The Northeastern Colony continued to excel with the onset of our one-year anniversary -- sustaining the highest GPA within Northeastern Greek Life during the spring semester. We inducted 13 new members in our fall class, many of whom are leaders on campus and in the community. We expanded our advisor base to include 10 esteemed individuals with various experiences. This fall we sponsored “A Call to Men: Becoming Part of the Bystander Solution”, which promotes the prevention of sexual and domestic violence. We are looking forward to a bright future with our campus and community, including our second annual “Beta Holidays”, where we sing holiday songs to benefit our philanthropy. We will continue to embody Men of Principle’s mission in our actions every day.

The Brothers of the Zeta Mu Chapter are having a very successful first semester. We recruited nine quality individuals to join our brotherhood. We had a silent auction dinner to raise money for the American Cancer Society and plan on having another event to benefit the Society second semester. The fall quarter of 2010 was a productive one to say the least.

We officially have 12 pledges, all of which far exceed the highest standard on campus. We set a chapter goal to perform 200 hours of community service each quarter. During the last two weeks of October, we held our annual Beta Pumpkin Patch, which is a philanthropy event benefiting the Athens Humane Society. We will be holding a “Beta Alcohol Awareness Week” from January 10-14. As the calendar turned and a new school year began, Theta Delta was excited to continue being a positive contributor to Greek Life at Ohio State. Our chapter is currently in the process of recruiting outstanding young men to go Beta when winter quarter arrives. This winter and spring, Theta Delta will hold its annual dodgeball philanthropy to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, as well as a March Madness bracket tournament that will raise money for a charity that the chapter will select in the near future.

The Gamma Phi Chapter was off to another great start. Recruitment Chairman Josh Breeden helped sign another outstanding pledge class. Currently, the chapter is in first place in intramurals. The Gamma Lambda Chapter had several exciting events throughout this semester. During this year’s homecoming, we continued our tradition of hosting a large benefit concert. The event featured the Casey Donahue Band. Our philanthropy, the Stillwater Battered and Abused Women’s Shelter, will receive all proceeds.

Beta Rho is thrilled to announce that, through the tireless efforts of Chapter Advisor David Rae, the house at 1009 Patterson St. is back in the hands of the Beta Rho Alumni Association. The chapter would like to extend a special thanks to Arthur Carmichael for his years of supporting the chapter by allowing our use of the house. On the undergraduate side, the men of the house took a stand for being men of principle this summer, asking membership to re-evaluate their values to align with those of Beta Theta Pi. Through this process, directed by strong undergraduate leadership, the chapter raised its cumulative GPA from a 2.90 to a 3.15. The current pledge class, numbering 26 men, has a cumulative GPA of over 3.30. This is the year of possibilities for Beta Rho, and we look forward to rising to the challenge.

Last spring, our chapter pledged and initiated 12 men of principle to compose our Iota Class. Since then, our chapter hosted a concert to support FOP research, a disease that has affected the family of an alumnus. This Halloween, we transformed our chapter house into a haunted attraction for Philadelphia inner-city children, and this November, we spearheaded Movember, an event to raise money and spread awareness about prostate cancer. Our newly-instituted Alumni Advisory Board has been instrumental in our chapter’s recent success, raising funds for chapter house improvements. Penn State (AU)

Alpha Upsilon had a busy semester after a year of recolonizing efforts. Within two weeks, the chapter was up and running with a ratified constitution and bylaws. Recruitment efforts were strong leading up to bid extensions. A list of about 150 potential recruits was narrowed down to 30-35 throughout the first few weeks of rush. Of these, 21 were extended bids and 17 accepted. For homecoming, the chapter paired with Phi Sigma Rho to win fifth place overall in its opening year. As of September 13, the Delta Epsilon Chapter has been lifted to Probation status. All 28 active members are determined to attain both Good Standing and qualification for the Sisson Award this academic year. This semester, we enjoyed hosting local alumni for a BBQ and sharing stories. We planned a philanthropic 3-on-3 basketball tournament for the spring and have been volunteering at local parks with clean-up efforts on a monthly basis. The Beta Mu Chapter was proud to have a very successful fall rush with over 30 bids and 29 accepting (three of which are legacies). Our annual Theta-Beta Grill Off, which raises money for CASA, a nonprofit network supporting and promoting courtappointed volunteer advocacy for abused and neglected children, raised a record $10,000 this fall. From an athletics standpoint, we finished first overall, earning 10 championships. We look forward to a similar season this year. Future events for alumni and family include Mom’s Day and Dad’s Day. Zeta Tau got off to a great start by recruiting the largest pledge class for the third straight semester. In addition to outstanding recruitment, the chapter held its second-annual Surf as One surf competition benefiting Life Rolls On, which cares for individuals with severe spinal cord injuries. Gamma Alpha had a successful recruitment season consisting of a concert, poker tournament and a lot of volleyball. The turnout was one of the largest in over a decade. Standards for the fall pledge class have been extremely high since they are following the 12 seniors that are leaving at the end of the year. As a result of hard work from the entire Gamma Tau Chapter, we were pleased to recruit 18 men of principle through some spectacular recruitment events this fall. Among the highlights of these events were a rallying speech by ESPN sports anchor and Beta alum Neil Everett, indoor skydiving and dinner at the famous Gauchos Village Brazilian BBQ. We will also be holding several philanthropy events from a beach cleanup day with a sorority to hosting, a CPR training event. In addition, over 120 parents attended our annual parents’ weekend events. There is a fresh sense of optimism surrounding the Zeta Omicron Chapter here at SIU. We recently recruited 14 new pledges of the highest quality. This past spring we raised our GPA to a 2.75 and met the Fraternity’s GPA requirement for the first time in over three semesters. On another note, I would like to congratulate David Rhoads ‘11 and Cory Flicher for being accepted into the Order of Omega (Greek Honors Society). Finally, our next major event will be the Alumni Golf Outing and Formal (on the same day), which will be April 16th.

The brothers of Sigma took significant strides toward increasing community and campus involvement this semester. We plan to exceed our community service goal from last semester by getting more involved with our school and the community. The brothers have volunteered with local churches, homeless shelters and youth sports teams. We also are planning a large brotherhood philanthropic event with CureSearch, an organization that helps the fight against cancer. We had a very successful open house and school homecoming in September. We showcased many historical treasures and had several alumni in attendance who were able to see some of the structural updates we made to the house. Epsilon Eta had a terrific rush this year. We were able to bring 20 new men of principle into the chapter. The Zeta Rho Chapter has been working diligently with the General Fraternity leadership in efforts to carry our chapter to excellence in areas of scholarship and finance. In late September, Brother Eric Lindgren was diagnosed with testicular cancer. As of late, brothers have been supportive and caring for his well-being. The chapter held a successful philanthropy event in support of Brother Lindgren, donating hundreds of dollars to the Live Strong Foundation. We have also had high attendance in many community philanthropic events. Our chapter recruited a choice pledge class of six men who were selected on the basis of virtuous character.

This fall, the chapter recruited eight men during a deferred recruitment period. A short while later, Greek Life reports were given out and the Delta Rho Chapter held not only the highest cumulative GPA of all IFC fraternities, but the most service hours of all Greeks too. The alumni were invited to a campus-wide Virgin Island Event they started years ago. The fourth annual Beta 500, supporting Heroes for Hope, added more teams and peer support since last year. The Theta Zeta Chapter is pleased to announce that its efforts to renew the rush program have been successful. Facing a hostile recruitment environment, the brothers were able to aggressively recruit eight pledges this semester. Utilizing new rush tools to meet the most freshmen proved that quantity does drive quality. Bolstered by a successful recruitment, the chapter has chosen to undertake Movember. This is an ambitious charity in which the brothers will grow their moustaches for the month of November to raise money for prostate cancer research. The Zeta Xi Chapter has seen continued success in all areas of Greek Life at Truman. In addition, we continue to battle on the intramural fields to regain the title of intramural champions. We have once again started the year off strong. Our success with rush has continued, as all 11 bids given out this fall were accepted.

Our new member education program also remains top-notch, demonstrated by the fact that all 13 of our pledges during the spring semester were initiated. We have renewed our relationship with Tools for Schools, an organization that builds classroom furniture for local Nashville schools. Though we all returned to school this fall with heavy hearts after the loss of our brother, Kyle Craig ’11, the tragedy has only made our brotherhood stronger. The Zeta Epsilon Chapter is looking forward to continuing the progress made during the previous spring semester as we proudly welcomed 16 new brothers into our chapter. Our fall recruitment for sophomores has seen eight men begin the pledge process. The chapter is currently preparing for our annual Beta Rose Pageant to benefit the fight against cerebral palsy. On campus, brothers maintain leadership roles in activities ranging from Peers, a student tutoring group for engineers, Blue Key, the student run tour group for prospective students, and IFC. This fall we extended three bids and all three accepted. This is good for the “off” semester. As far as events go, we had our annual scholarship banquet on November 20th. We rewarded some of the hard-working, non-Greek students at the university, as well as put on an exceptional dinner for the brothers, alumni and university officials. Last semester we attained the highest GPA of all Greek organizations, and we are working hard to maintain that accomplishment. Omicron is doing very well, and we are looking forward to another great semester. We soon will publish our Installation date which will take place in late spring. The Alpha Phi Chapter had an incredible fall rush. Twentythree new men accepted bids -- the largest pledge class since the chapter’s refounding father class! The chapter also put on an extremely successful philanthropy by attempting to break the world record for the world’s largest pillow fight. Participants came from the student body and the local Blacksburg community. All proceeds went to the family of a local infant that is suffering from cancer. The Tau Chapter at Wabash College was pleased to accept a 20-member pledge class to its ranks this fall. The class is a diverse, involved group that looks to continue the traditions of the chapter.

The Tau Chapter will be hosting its first Dad’s Day later this semester. Also, the chapter will be hosting a campus-wide grill-out for charity. The Beta Omega Chapter had a very active and busy summer. At the 2010 General Convention, Beta Omega took home the Knox Award for the second consecutive year. The chapter recently began volunteering at the Seattle Ryther Child Center, where active members act as role models and support the children. Significant renovations were made to the Beta Omega house over the summer, including a newly-remodeled third-floor bathroom and a new sleeping porch. By changing the focus of the university’s annual Thurtene Carnival towards community service, our chapter has set itself apart as a trailblazer in the Greek community. The highlight for the Gamma Theta Chapter this fall semester was the Oxford Cup Presentation and 90th Anniversary Celebration of the chapter’s existence. The largest alumni reunion in our chapter’s history featured Oxford Cup winner Don Cromer ’59.

The chapter is rising off a semester in which it earned top grades on campus for fraternities and is building off of that accomplishment by continuing to recruit and develop men of principle. Our annual philanthropy was on October 24, with proceeds going to Hospice of Spokane, an organization that supports terminally ill cancer patients and their families.

Mu Epsilon has 17 pledges, which is the highest number since the Class of 2009. Our brothers continue to maintain a strong GPA and also are succeeding athletically. Risk Manager David Zachary Dixon is Wesleyan University’s starting center midfielder for a previously nationally-ranked men’s soccer team. With basketball season approaching shortly, Brothers David Maltz, David Fogel and Pledge Shasha Brown are looking to have a great season in the NESCAC conference.

Academically, Brother Conor Byrne is about to start shooting his Senior Thesis film entitled Merry, chronicling the story of a mall Santa Claus in the offseason.

Our fall lecture series also commenced, featuring Robert Benjamin, former Managing Director at JPMorgan Chase and Margalit Fox, a New York Times reporter.

The brothers at Zeta Sigma had a unifying start to a great semester with our chapter retreat. The retreat was carefully planned by the executive board and our chapter advisors. As another way of promoting brotherhood, we have begun a brother of the week program. We also had our annual philanthropic event, Bedtime for Beta, a 72-hour event with all donations going to support prostate cancer research. We started really pushing recruitment at the beginning of June 2010. We held a variety of recruitment events that included: dinners, volleyball nights, shooting range visits, lake house trips and, on the night of move-in for Wichita State University, we had moon bounces, a DJ, volleyball games and pizza for all students. After all of our recruitment events, we signed 22 pledges for the fall and 4 pledges for the spring semester. On September 18, we held our annual philanthropy event “Beta Bash” and raised $2,500 for the Luca John Foundation through a 5K run, volleyball tournament, food stand and raffle.

Zeta Upsilon wrapped up the fall formal recruitment period with one of the largest pledge classes on campus. The brothers who attended Convention enjoyed their experiences and came back to the college reinvigorated and ready to continue to improve chapter operations. This fall, Zeta Upsilon focused on inviting local alumni to interact with the chapter and is looking forward to continued outreach in the upcoming years.

The Alpha Pi Chapter recruited six outstanding pledges. The chapter house continues to improve, thanks in large part to the actives, current BBA President and Chapter Counselor Rick Abegglen and a substantial amount of money we received. By way of a miracle, the chapter rented a portion of the Beta House to a construction company building on Mendota Ct. and received $42,000. Ted D. This semester, the Zeta Zeta Chapter had a very successful recruitment period. We pledged nine new members and are looking forward to initiation. Our recruitment period consisted of a number of events. We went go-karting, played pool, went bowling and held numerous cookouts. Along with a great recruitment season, we participated in a number of philanthropy events. Our chapter DJ’d a number of campus events, and on September 18, over half the chapter attended the DARE 2 Battle: Battle of the Bands. Wittenberg (ΑΓ)

The brothers of the Alpha Gamma Chapter had a great start this year with high morale following a trying spring semester.

With informal rush, we took three pledges and are looking forward to formal rush in January. We recently participated in Greek Week and are proud to note that we were the Greek Week Champions.

Homecoming was great as many alumni came back for a cookout. We look forward to finishing the fall semester strong and would like to invite alumni to the following events: Formal Preference Dinner (January 20, 2011) and Dorg Dinner (April 16, 2011). We wish everyone a safe and Happy Holiday season!

A Lasting Moment

L

It is hard to believe that my journey as a Friend of Beta began almost 10 years ago when I was asked to facilitate a session of The John and Nellie Wooden Institute for Men of Principle. I had no idea how my life was about to change. I left Oxford inspired by Beta’s renewed passion for redefining the fraternity experience and became committed to helping regain Beta Theta Pi’s presence in San Diego. One of my proudest moments was the colonization of the Zeta Omega Chapter at the University of San Diego in 2004.

Serving as an advisor for the Zeta Omega Chapter for the last six years has been by far one of my most rewarding life experiences. It is a joy to mentor a group of young men who are committed to doing the right thing. It is inspiring to volunteer for a fraternity that is so invested in the continued growth and success of its undergraduate and alumni members.

And somewhere along this amazing journey, Beta became family to me. My life has been

enriched by the incredible undergraduates, volunteers and Friends of Beta who are now a part of my life. So, when it came time to do my estate planning, it was a natural decision to include the Beta Theta Pi Foundation as one of my beneficiaries.

As an FOB, I have had the privilege of experiencing first-hand the tremendous impact of Beta’s values-based leadership programs.

I know every penny I donate will be well spent on developing future generations of exemplary young men. It is the least I can do to thank Beta for all it has given me. I think, perhaps, it may be one of the best investments I will ever make.

Beta is changing lives, and I am honored to be a small part of it.
