UPSTAIRS THOUGHTS RABBI’S REFLECTIONS “Hungry for Meaning” Jews seem forever to be feasting or fasting. On most Jewish holidays, including Rosh Hashanah and Sukkot, which we are about to observe, as well as Simhat Torah, Pesakh and Shavuot, (not to mention the minor holidays of Hanukkah and Purim) we feast, and those celebratory meals reflect the joy we feel because of those days and adds to it. On the major (24 hour) fasts of Yom Kippur and Tisha b’Av, as well as several minor fast days, our lack of the enjoyment of eating reminds us of times of grief in Jewish history and reminds us that some things deserve serious reflection, extending even to the exclusion of food from those days. As the Yamim Nora’im (Days of Awe) approach, we are faced with the stark symmetry of the first ten days of the month of Tishrei. That symmetry consists of two days of feasting and two of fasting. The feast days are the first two, the two days of Rosh Hashanah. Over the course of those days we spend a great deal of time in services together, praying in acknowledgment of God’s awesome power over our lives and our world, as we symbolically seat God on the throne of heaven and remember that this is the birthday of the world. The fast days are Yom Kippur and the less-observed Fast of Gedalia, which falls on the day after the second day of Rosh Hashanah. This minor fast, lasting from sunup to sundown, provides a second opportunity for self-reflection exactly one week before the major fast of Yom Kippur. Coming out of Rosh Hashanah, it reminds us that the purpose of these first ten days of Tishrei, culminating with Yom Kippur, is to examine our deeds and to make amends. Fasting for religious purposes has fallen out of fashion for most Jews. With the exception of Yom Kippur and perhaps Tisha b’Av we rarely take advantage of the opportunities that a fast day can provide to refocus. Using the time we would have expended on eating to reflect on the meaning of our lives, and denying ourselves this one pleasure in order to remember the suffering of our people at various points in our history, can help us to re-prioritize and find a context for our own personal failings. We all make choices about our food, including choices that reflect the morality of what and how we eat. Vegetarians and vegans abstain from animal-based foods out of respect for the life which God has endowed them; Jews and Muslims refrain from eating pork in awareness of God’s demand to cultivate purity and to engage in distinctive ways of eating. On the lighter side we often eat cake to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and other personal dates of importance. Food is an expression of our emotions and our values. I encourage our members to take part in the fast of Gedalia this year to help set a mood for the week of reflection and atonement that follows. By connecting to our tradition in this way, we can deepen our experience of the Yamim Nora’im both by feasting and by fasting. L’shanah tova tikateivu May you be inscribed for a good year.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE As the High Holidays approach and I become older and more introspective, I realize that it is the people and the relationships in my life that are important. Stuff is, well, stuff. These past two years have certainly highlighted this. To make a long story short, my dad was diagnosed in November, 2011 with stage 4 prostate cancer. With my mom, I attended all of my father's various doctor appointments, until November, 2012 when my mother died six weeks after a malignant liver tumor ruptured. Then, I became my dad's primary care giver until his death in June, 2013. I knew that the day would come when I would take care of my parents. So sure, that I “made” my husband move back home from San Diego in 1992. It was the right decision on so many levels. It allowed my children to grow up with both sets of grandparents, as well as learn about compassion and the joy that care giving can bring.

I became closer to my parents in the last year(s) of their lives, which I didn't even think was possible. We talked about life, we talked about death, we talked about the right decisions we made in our lives, and we talked about the wrong decisions that we made. We laughed, and we teased (I still cannot believe that my mom loved the Game Show Network)! There were very few tears. Certainly, there were no regrets.
It was such a privilege to be able to take care of them the way they had always taken care of me.

And now, that I have no more doctor appointments to keep me busy, and I'm feeling a bit lost and sad, my Congregation Beth Judea family is taking care of me. From bringing us meals, to asking me how I'm doing (and I mean truly wanting to know), making donations in the memory of my parents, and offering physical and emotional help as I empty my parents' home, I feel supported and loved. I cannot thank you enough, Congregation Beth Judea, for the kindness you have shown me and my family. In return, I ask each and every one of you for forgiveness. If I have hurt you in any way by my words or my (in)actions, I am very, very sorry. As we move forward, I hope I can provide you with the strength you have provided to me.

Chant MEGILLAT ESTHER next Purim!
My name is Fred Rabinowitz and I am excited to be the new Vice-President of Programming.
It may seem strange to be thinking about Purim during the summer, but this is actually the perfect time for those who enjoy chanting scripture to be acquiring this wonderful, tongue-in-cheek version of the tropes, in order to read from the Megillah next Purim (March 15, 2014 in the evening). It is such a dramatic story! The anticipation of everyone’s groggers, which surrounds each time the evil Haman is mentioned, makes it all the more exciting. If enough of you are interested, I will offer a class on Esther trope – I know of several already who have asked about it – or if not, then hopefully I can work with you individually. Be forewarned, however, that the Purim story is recited at breakneck speed, and should be read directly from the scroll, similar to Torah. Once again, if you are up for a fun challenge, please get in touch with me at hazzanweisberg@bethjudea.org
It is my goal to makie sure that we have programs that are of interest to all the different congregates of the synagogue and to get people to help plan and volunteer to help with those programs. Carly Resceda Colen will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on September 28, 2013. Carly is a 7th grader at Cooper Middle School in Buffalo Grove. She enjoys acting, softball, dance, and reading. Carly just spent her second summer at B’nai B’rith Beber Camp where she enjoyed paddle boarding, archery, Israeli dance, and hanging out with friends. Proudly joining in Carly’s celebration are her parents, David and Nicole Colen, and her grandparents, Jack and Arlene Colen, and Morris and Betty Casper. EDUCATION Parent Welcome and Orientation: Join us on Sunday, September 29th at 10 am for Parent’s Day. Meet the clergy, administration and lay leadership of our school. It’s a great time to get a panorama of our entire program, ask questions, and meet other parents. This informal and educational conversation will help you get acquainted with school events (holiday & family programs, Consecration, etc.), School Policies, Overnighters for Aleph-Dalet students, and much more. Following this assembly, you’re invited to join your children’s classes to meet the teachers, hear about the curriculum and class expectations. Shabbat Service Attendance: All Aleph through Heh students are required to attend 9 Shabbat services during the course of the school year (August 2013 – May 31, 2014). Services that will count toward Shabbat service requirements include (1)Friday night services (2)Shabbat morning services - Aleph & Bet families may attend the Gan Shabbat service which begins at 10:30 am in the Beit Midrash. (3)High Holiday Services (Rosh Hashanah, Kol Nidre & Yom Kippur Day services) (4) any service in which there is a Torah and Haftarah reading such as - Rosh Chodesh - Sukkot - Shemini Atzeret (morning service) - Simchat Torah (morning service) - Passover - Shavuot We want the students to come with parents in order to fully enjoy and participate in the service. NEW: COMMUNITY JEWISH HIGH SCHOOL We have an exciting new High School program for all 8th-12th Graders next year – a community Jewish High School for all Beth Judea, Temple Chai and Beth Am families! Take a look at the brochure to see various course offerings! We are redefining what it means to be an 8th-12th grade student in the Northwest Suburbs! We are calling our school Beyachad, which means “together”. By combining our resources we are able to enhance our program and our student’s learning opportunities. We are able to offer more diverse classes, taught by 5 clergy of the 3 synagogues, as well as other teachers. Beyachad will be taking the place of our current BJU (Beth Judea University) program. It will be meeting on Monday nights from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. Our program grows from about 30 students to over 200, creating a larger cohort of students and engagement opportunities for each of them. Students will have more choices in the classes they take and more diversity in the kinds of learning experiences offered. Our 8th graders, who will be part of Beyachad, will have a special 8th Grade-only experience for the first 2 trimesters focusing on Israel (and getting our students ready for Ta’am Yisrael) and Middot (Jewish Values). They will join in with the 9th-12th Grade electives in the third trimester. The 12th Graders will have a special Senior Seminar that will take place at that same time, so 8th Graders and 12th Graders won’t be in class together. The Education Committee, Rabbi Pivo and I are extremely excited about our Beyachad program for next year and hope you share our enthusiasm. YOUTH A MESSAGE FROM: MARC SENDER, YOUTH DIRECTOR Dear Beth Judea FamilyWell summer has finally ended and the High Holidays are here. This is the time of year to clean your slate. It is fitting that this year Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur correspond with the beginning of a new school year. As a time to begin anew and try to do better this is a great theme for children and adults of all ages to march into the new school year with. Whether it is spending a few extra minutes studying, or trying to be on time for class, or even trying out for a new extracurricular event, this is a great time to throw caution to the wind and try something new and exciting. In that same spirit there are a few changes in the youth groups this year. To begin with we are excited to welcome two new advisors to our Beth Judea family. Abigail Drazner and Scottie Friedland have been hired to fill some very large shoes with the departing of two very long tenured advisors. I cannot express how excited I am to have them on our team. Both are former presidents of the BJUSY chapter and come with a wealth of experience and a ton of passion. The year is barely a couple weeks old and I already feel a great energy in our youth program. Additionally the youth program will see a couple of other changes this year. With our Hebrew High School joining forces with other synagogues and creating a community Hebrew High on Monday nights we will no longer have the joint BJU and USY dinners on Tuesday night. Have no fear though we will still provide heavy snacks and many programs (especially the ones where we go out of the building) will still provide dinner. Additionally we are adjusting the timing of some of our programs. Most programs will still run the customary 7-9pm however on the once a month (or sometimes more often) when we are going out of the building or any other time we deem it necessary the program will begin at 6:30pm instead so that we can end closer to 9:30pm. As a result it is very important for USYers and parents alike to pay close attention to the BJUSY calendar and monthly email to make sure to be on time to events. We have made the calendar very easy to access by either logging onto our website http://www.bethjudeausy.weebly.com or simply going to the link http://tinyurl.com/BJUSYcalendar. We also have placed our membership system online as well as allowing for rsvping to Kadima and Kadinkers events through unique online links. Finally, this year we are excited to announce a new initiative that BJUSY is teaming up with CHUSY region for. On the second week of most months there will be no BJUSY on Tuesday night. Instead there will be a regional lounge night on the Wednesday night immediately following. These regional lounge nights will rotate from synagogue to synagogue (the first one is at Am Yisrael in Northfield and the second one is at our very own Beth Judea) and give the teens a chance to program with other teens from around the entire Chicagoland region on a monthly basis.
In other news, the annual USY vs. Men’s Club softball game was another huge success. Though our youth fought valiantly they ended up falling by a score of 10-4 to the much more “experienced” Men’s Club. This coming year we are going to continue our new teen minyanim once a month on a Saturday morning. We will be having our youth High Holiday services in the beginning of September and then our very first teen minyan will be October 26th and it will be a Superhero Minyan. In addition to our teen minyanim we are going to continue our outstanding programming throughout the year. Our Kadima will have their first program, a Maccabi Madness program, on September 15th and then our Kadinkers will have their program, More and More Monkeys Jumping on the Trampolines, on September 22 nd. ALIYAH IN OUR 60’s FROM ARLINGTON HTS, IL TO CAESEREA, ISRAEL (Part 17) L TO R: HOWIE GOODMAN, SUZANNE GOODMAN, AND BEVERLY GOODMAN TCHERNOV NEAR EILAT, ISRAEL Howie and Suzanne Goodman were valued members at Beth Judea until they decided to make aliyah in 2009. The Goodmans have agreed to provide us with a blog on their experiences as new olim in Israel. Though we continue to miss the Goodmans, we can all look forward to reading about their adventures in Israel through the blog.
Aliyan in Our 60’s – Part 17 Now that the holidays are over, Israel has a break from holidays. Bar mitzvahs in Israel are a bit different than in the United States. Many are held on Monday or Thursday instead of Shabbat morning. One of the reasons is that the weekday ceremony allows for friends and family to travel to the ceremony without causing issues for the “Shomer Shabbos” attendees. It also permits musical instruments and other additions to the festivities. Our daughter's stepson, Amit, was a Bar Mitzvah in early May. It was held on a Thursday in Tzvat ( Sevat- Sefad) which is considered the home of the Kabbalistic movement. Abbas, President of Palestine, is from Tzvat. Amit lives with his mother, brother, and extended family on a Moshav (farm settlement) called Mochavia. It is near Afula. His family is mostly secular and as many Israelis, they do not belong to a synagogue. Secular Jews in Israel normally do not even attend services for the High Holidays. As mentioned before, Israelis do not understand paying dues to belong to a synagogue as approved Orthodox synagogues are subsidized by the state. Therefore, the secular Israelis tend to have the bar mitzvah ceremony at a place of their choosing. Four years ago Amit’s brother had his ceremony at the Kotel. For Amit's Bar Mitzvah,we all met in the main parking area below the old city of Tzvat. A walking caravan of friends and family (perhaps 25 people) followed a guide, a trumpet player, a drummer, and the Bar Mitzvah Boy. The group climbed a series of high and long steps to the old city. As we traversed the narrow sidewalks, songs were sung and spontaneous dancing occurred. Along the way, we encountered tour groups from Africa and the United States. Many of them became excited and joined in our celebration. The party first stopped at a Sephardic Synagogue where the guide explained the origin of the shul. Everything was in Ivrit. After that stop we climbed some more stone steps and stopped at the second synagogue, Abuhav Shul. In the courtyard was a wonderful table full of cheeses, pastries, salads, croissants, juices, tea, water, and coffee. The synagogue was built in the sixteenth century and has the oldest Torah in Zvat. This is where the Bar Mitzvah ceremony would occur. Amit sat near the Ark and was assisted by the guide in the wearing of Tefillum. Each of the seven wraps of the Yad Tefillum was assisted by a person who was called up to Amit. They were uncles, cousins, Saba, and Amit’s father Dani. The person called would do one wrap on his arm and then give him their special thoughts or blessings. Howie was honored to be called up. After that, there was a brief pre-Torah service without the Amidah. The Torah was removed from the Ark and carried to the reading area in the center of the small synagogue. People were called to the Torah and the portion read. Amit then said the blessings. (continued on next page)

ALIYAH IN OUR 60’s (continued from previous page) After the Torah Service, the Torah was returned to the ark. Then the special women in Amit’s life were called up to unwrap the Tefillum. Suzanne and Beverly were both asked to participate. Again, each person gave a blessing or advice after each unwrapping of his arm. Of course, candy was thrown at Amit. Then there was joyous singing and dancing. The group walked to the third synagogue and had another talk about its origins. After that tour, we walked to the Ha Ari 8 restaurant for a wonderful lunch. Amit’s mother, Ramah, had a slide presentation about Amit’s life. She also had a presentation about their recent trip to Japan where his grandparents are living. His grandfather manages an Israeli plant in Japan. We have a busy life in Caesarea. The Mediterranean Sea is in our “backyard” and we belong to a health club within walking distance of our home. It has equipment comparable to XSport Fitness in Buffalo Grove. Suzanne is in a weekly painting class held near the health club. Every Wednesday, we go to Netanya which is about fifteen minutes from our home. We attend 8:00 Shakarit services at our synagogue, Bet Israel. It is the only Masorti Congregation in Israel that has a daily morning minyan. We then have other responsibilities. Howie meets weekly with the CFO. Money is very tight and we struggle to pay our synagogue bills.

The Sisterhood known as “BICA” has a board meeting once a month. BICA also has monthly programs such as movies, lectures, Kabbalat Shabbat dinners and Kiddushim. Our Synagogue Board meets once per month for about two hours. Our main themes are money and membership. There are Israeli dancing groups, bridge clubs, Hadassah programs, Concerts, and the Masons using our facility.
Mondays ,at 11:00 in the morning, there is a magnificent musical program at the Shearim building. Outstanding Russian olim musicians perform. It is an hour long program that costs thirty shekels.
Tourists joining in on Amit's celebration AACI (Association of Americans and Canadians in Israel) of Netanya hosts many activities and tiyulim. A member of our synagogue, Harvey Bordowitz, has been giving a four-part audiovisual discussion about the symphony. He was conductor of the Herzliya Symphony for thirty-one years. Most of the AACI members are British. Our Rabbi emeritus, Rabbi Irvin Birnbaum, holds a tiyul once per month. It is a day trip to somewhere wonderful in Israel. We have been north, south, and east on various trips. We do not even ask where we are going anymore because we have never been disappointed.

ALIYAH IN OUR 60’s (continued from previous page) Friday nights, we have family and friends for a Shabbat Dinner. Saturday mornings we attend Shabbat services at our Netanya synagogue. In addition to this schedule, we have Alon and Erez, our Israeli grandkids, quite a few times during the week.
We also enjoy seeing friends who are visiting Israel. Recently, Judy Meservey along with her cousins from Tel Aviv, joined us for lunch in the old Caesarea harbor. We will be in Chicago in early July and hope to be at Beth Judea after visiting the Lyons in St Louis. Have a wonderful summer!

SISTERHOOD SOURCE Thanks to the wonderful donations from our synagogue members, we had a very successful rummage sale. Kudos to Laurie B. Davis for chairing the event.
