RABBI’S REFLECTIONS

IN THIS ISSUE

“A Tradition in Constant Transition” Having recently returned from a wonderful Israel trip, I want to share a few highlights, as well as continue our study of Torah that we began this fall. Let’s first follow up on last month’s overview of Bereshit (Genesis) by reviewing the content of the Torah’s second book, Shemot (Exodus). Its first parsha, also called Shemot, describes the Israelites' enslavement in Egypt, God’s call to Moses to lead them out, and the initial confrontation of Moses and Pharaoh. In parshat Va’era, Moses continues to plead with Pharoah and the plagues begin. They continue in parshat Bo, culminating in the death of the firstborn throughout Egypt and the Israelites’ hurried exit from bondage. Pharaoh’s chariots pursue the people in parshat Beshallakh, but the Israelites escape safely through the split Sea of Reeds, which then drowns the Egyptians. Manna falls for the people to eat each day of their journey. In parshat Yitro, the judicial system is established, and the people receive the law at the foot of Mt. Sinai. Many more laws are promulgated in parshat Mishpatim, and in parshat Terumah, God commands the creation of the furnishings of the mishkan, the portable tabernacle that the people will take with them during their wanderings. Parshat Tetzaveh details the garb the Kohanim wore for their service in the mishkan, as well as purification rites for the people. Ki Tisa records the creation of the Golden Calf, the punishment for that sin, and the creation of a second set of tablets of the law. In parshat Vayakhel and parshat Pekudei the Torah provides more description of the mishkan, its furnishings and the clothing of the Kohanim. (continued next page)

UPSTAIRS THOUGHTS RABBI’S REFLECTIONS “A Tradition in Constant Transition” A lot happens in Shemot! And a great deal also happened while we were in Israel. While I have spent a great deal of time there as a student and in the years since, it never ceases to amaze me how much changes in the land of Israel from one year to the next. There seemed to be construction cranes everywhere, putting up new apartment complexes, high rise buildings, and shopping areas. We had dinner (some of us more than once) at the new pedestrian mall in what was once called the Old Train Station in Jerusalem, which they now call the New Old Train Station. Israel continues to transform itself through improvements to its infrastructure, through a proliferation of high-tech research, and through its leadership in water conservation and desalination. Our wide ranging experiences in Israel this fall and the wide range of topics in the book of Shemot both remind us of a key Jewish experience and characteristic: adapting to rapid change. Whether it was our ancestors’ sudden departure from Egypt following the plagues, the many forced wanderings of our people in the centuries since, or modern Israel’s transformation from a kibbutz society to a Fortune 500 society, Jews have internalized the capacity to quickly adjust to new realities and to thrive in those new situations. As we continue our studies in this Shanah Torah (Year of Torah), we should remember that we are the ever-evolving people, a dynamic we both embrace and take care to manage appropriately. We know that the nature of American Judaism is also changing quickly and that our responsibility is to manage that change in ways that will continue to reflect the eternal values embedded in our Torah and in our historical memory. As things continue to change, we must keep some things the same, chief among them our dedication to learning the words, the books, and the values that formed us and which will sustain us through even the most breathtaking changes we can imagine.

A HANUKKAH MESSAGE FROM RABBI PIVO The miracle of Hanukkah commemorates events from the 2nd century B.C.E., when a small band of Jews, the Maccabees, triumphed over the forces of King Antiochus IV, who had banned Jewish practices and desecrated the Temple in Jerusalem. The Maccabees fought for Jewish practices and control of the Temple and won. The Talmud teaches us that when the Maccabees reconsecrated the Temple, a small quantity of oil, enough to last for only one day, miraculously burned for eight. Throughout the ages from that time, Jews have continued the practice of lighting the menorah for eight nights. The battle for Jewish freedom of religion and to have control of the Jewish homeland in Israel is a constant one. We fight not only those who threaten Jews and Judaism, but also the Antiochus within each one of us, which is the urge to be exactly like those around us, with no distinctive Jewish practices to remind us of who we are, and no connection to Israel as the land of Jewish history, past and present. As we light the hanukkiah each night of Hanukkah, its lights can remind us of the courage that the Maccabees needed to wage their fight, and the same courage that we need today to wage ours. Let’s rededicate ourselves, much as they rededicated the Temple, to service to God, Jewish learning and the Jewish community.

Hag Hanukkah Sameakh,

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE IMPORTANT NOTICE BOARD POSITIONS NOW AVAILABLE

There are 2 positions available for at-large Board Members that expire June 30, 2015. Our constitution allows all members in good standing to be eligible for service on the Board of Directors. The Board has the authority for guiding many aspects of our Congregational life, some of those including oversight of our Professional Staff, budgeting, finance matters and establishment of policies related to Synagogue operations – all while serving as goodwill ambassadors to our greater community. Board Members are also required to serve as an active member of a standing committee, usher at services, and be an active participant in our synagogue’s programs.

DEBBIE KREISMAN DUBIN CONGREGATION BETH JUDEA E-mail: debdubin-cbj@hotmail.com

MISSION STATEMENT Congregation Beth Judea is a welcoming, egalitarian synagogue whose mission is to create a warm and inviting home that serves the lifelong spiritual, educational and fellowship needs of our members. Consistent with the principles of the Conservative Movement, we embrace Torah and our responsibility to serve and support the greater Jewish community, the community at large, the United States of America and the State of Israel.

The Word December 2014

Why become a Board Member? A fair question to ask – with perhaps rewards that you may never have expected to receive. This is an opportunity to give back to your community, explore a ‘personal stretch’ in being of service, sharing with other members of our vibrant organization, exploring other areas of interest that you may have never considered before or, perhaps, even a vision of adding to a larger role of leadership. Everyone has something to bring to the table – this is a unique opportunity for you to consider taking action on. Please, if you are interested, we ask that you simply answer the following questions to begin the process and assist the committee. Your response, via email to Debbie Kreisman Dubin at debdubincbj@hotmail.com must be submitted before Monday, January 5, 2015: 1. How long have you been a member of CBJ? 2. What, if any committees have you previously served on – or are presently serving? 3. Why do you have a desire to be of service as a member of the Board of Directors? 4. What areas of the synagogue are you most interested in? How would you envision participating in pursuing that interest? Sincerely, Debbie Kreisman Dubin President Debdubin-cbj@hotmail.co

B’NAI MITZVAH BIO Zachary Wolf Pivo will be called to the Torah as a bar mitzvah on Saturday, December 13, 2014. Zachary is a 7th grade student at Solomon Schechter Day School in Northbrook. He attends Camp Ramah Wisconsin in the summer and has also been a camper at Ramah Day Camp. He loves Legos and enjoys playing sports, especially basketball, soccer, and baseball, at camp and at home. Zachary also enjoys all manner of electronic games and apps on any device he can get his hands on. He plays drums in the school band, acts as assistant to the school athletic director, and spends time at home taking care of his dog Milo. Zachary is pleased to share the celebration of his reaching Jewish adulthood with his parents Jeff and Lisa, his sister Celia, and brother Max, as well as his grandfather Steve Pivo, who will travel from California to spend the week with the family. Zachary also appreciates the support of his grandfather Henry Bittmann and great uncle Kurt Bittmann, who cannot travel but who send their love. Zachary thanks Cantor Weisberg for his help in learning haftarah trop and his Torah reading, as well as Shabbat service skills, and his father for assisting him in preparing his d’var Torah. He also thanks his family for reading Torah in honor of his becoming a bar mitzvah.

B’NAI MITZVAH BIO Sammy Epstein will be called to the Torah as a bar mitzvah on Saturday, December 13, 2014. Sammy is a seventh grader at West Oak Middle School, where he plays on the soccer and basketball teams. He is also a youth representative to the Mundelein After School Coalition. His favorite sport is soccer, and he has played on the same recreational team with the same coach and players for almost 5 years. The team has lost only 5 games in those years! Although Sammy loves soccer, he also enjoys hanging out with family and friends.

Sammy has a kind heart, especially for the less fortunate. At his bar mitzvah he is asking guests to bring an unwrapped toy that Sammy will donate to families of the Mundelein Food Pantry in hopes of brightening the holidays of some underprivileged children in his community. Sammy is celebrating his special mitzvah with his proud mother and father, Jamie and Dustin Epstein, his sisters, Hannah and Emma, his grandparents, Renee and Wes Brown, Arnold and Linda Epstein and Dorothy Neal. In addition, he will celebrate with his aunt and uncles, several cousins, and, of course, his friends. However, he will greatly miss celebrating with his maternal grandfather, Papa Don, who loved Sammy so much. Sammy would like to thank Anna Besser, Cantor Weisberg, and Rabbi Pivo for their flexibility in working with him to make his Hebrew School experience special for him. In addition, he would like to thank Judy Jury and Natalie Gurin for their outstanding tutoring.

LIFE IN ISRAEL – THE GOODMAN’S BLOG Howie and Suzanne Goodman were valued members at Beth Judea until they decided to make aliyah in 2009. The Goodmans have agreed to provide us with a blog on their experiences as new olim in Israel. Though we continue to miss the Goodmans, we can all look forward to reading about their adventures in Israel through the blog. In this issue, they tell of their visit with the Beth Judea mission, their latest day trip, the wounding of “Aron”, and SodaStream. “Israel is now in one of the most beautiful seasons. The cooler weather and rain are a relief after the hot summer.”...Click here to share their experience.

EDUCATION I'm really excited for Hanukkah this year. I love lighting the candles, singing the songs, dining on latkes, and spending time with family and friends. Below are some creative ways to celebrate Hanukkah. Creative Hanukkah Celebrations at Home Looking for a creative way to celebrate the eight nights of Hanukkah? Here's one solution from Lisa Popik Coll: 

Home-made Gift Night: Give each other a little something, but only if it is handmade by the giver – pictures, decorations, cases, etc.!

Entertainment Night: Have the kids perform a skit, song, or stand-up routine.

Family Game Night: Make it a point to have one night of just sitting down as a family and playing games - card games or board games.

Book Night: Encourage grandparents to give books - preferably ones with Jewish themes. Create a tradition of reading a book out loud this night.

Dreidel Night: You know those dreidels you stash away year after year? On this night, take out your lovely collection of dreidels - wood, metal, plastic, even a few that light up - get a ton of gelt and play. It is a really fun game!

Movie Night: Watch a DVD with a Jewish theme.

Tzedakah Night: This is a favorite for everyone. On this night, give your children money that they must donate to the charity of their choice. Give the children lots of options social services, environmental, educational, Jewish, non-Jewish, here and in Israel. They decide how much they want to donate, if they want to donate all their money to one charity or divide it up, whether or not they want to pool it.

HANUKKAH BAZAAR is coming up on Sunday, Dec. 7th from 9 am – 2:30 pm. ALL students can go to the Bazaar AFTER Religious School. No classes will be coming up during Religious School Time. Parents are invited to join their children for the Bazaar. See attached flyer for more information.

YOUTH WHAT’S UP IN THE WORLD OF OUR YOUTH Bingo is the name of the game. Each month, USYers are spending their first Sunday at the Gidwitz Senior Center helping residents with a rousing game of bingo. This has become a rewarding experience for all who are involved. Each month, different USYers attend and come back talking about how rewarding the experience is. The amazing thing is that what they are doing to brighten up the lives of many of the seniors is also putting a huge smile on their faces. It is really a wonderful thing to see two completely different generations be able to brighten each other’s days. This month is the Jewish Heritage Day at Northwestern University. As part of the day we are going to be attending the Northwestern basketball game on Sunday December 14th. The game is for all 6th-12th graders, but families are welcome to purchase and attend as well. For only $20 each person will get a ticket to the game, a limited edition Northwestern University hat (one with the Hebrew Letter Nun on the front instead of an N), and a bus ride to and from the game. As an added bonus, Northwestern is making kosher concessions available for purchase at the game. There will also be a special opportunity for a few kids to go onto the court either before the game or during half time. Make sure to check out the flyer or contact me for more details KADINKERS (3rd-5th grade) Our Kadinkers group had an awesome time at Rinkside sports. We played IDF style laser tag, went ice skating, played video games, and made tons of new friends. We have so many action packed programs ready for this group that this upcoming secular new year is going to be great. Be sure to get involved at an early age. KADIMA (6th-8th grade) We are looking for Kadimaniks who want to take a lead role in the group and help decide what programs we should be doing. They may even get a chance to help lead some programs for some of the younger kids. The Kadima board packets were recently emailed. Anybody who is interested can contact Marc Sender or Paige Reinstein During this past month the Kadima group got to participate in a Krav Maga teen minyan and have two awesome trips: one to Rinkside Sports for IDF laser tag and one to Dave and Busters over Thanksgiving. This coming month, we have a Northwestern basketball game for Jewish heritage day on December 14th. In addition to all of the wonderful program through the synagogue this month, coming up this month be sure to get signed up for the upcoming Kadima Konvention and 8th Grade Shabbaton. On December 5-7, we will get together for 3 incredible days at the Perlstein Resort at Camp Chi. The trip is amazing as we join 6th-8th graders from all across Chicagoland and Wisconsin and it even includes a trip to Kalahari. We already have 20 members from Beth Judea signed up for this trip; think we can get 25??? Registration information is included here, or you can contact Marc Sender for more details. Subsidies are available to make the trip very affordable to all who want to go!!! USY (BJUSY) (9th-12th grade) Our high school group has been incredibly busy. While we had a great Krav Maga teen minyan, helped at Bingo for the Gidwitz center, and went for a great IDF laser tag night, two of the most incredible programs happened just this past week. First, we sent 16 teens to the Perlstein resort for an amazing CHUSYfest weekend. It was really inspirational listening to the teens talk about real world issues. Listening to their ideas and thoughts makes me confident that our future is in good hands. One of the best programs of the month was just this past Tuesday. We got together with teens from B’nai Tikvah for an old fashioned nerf war. The program coincidentally occurred on the same day as the horrific attacks in Israel. The USYers immediately adjusted the end of the program to have a discussion about what needs to be done. They discussed the terrible headlines by CNN and discussed arranging a boycott of CNN goods at International Convention; they talked about how to change people’s thoughts on Israel at their school and even discussed how lucky they are to be able to pray at minyan and have youth programs and not be in fear for their safety. It was really a moving experience to see our teens taking the lead on world issues. Make sure you do not miss out on the CHUSYfest CHUSYworld adventure Disney style. We are going to spend 3 incredible days at the Perlstein Resort at Camp Chi. The youth committee has approved a huge subsidy for this event taking the cost down to only $199 for BJUSY members and more subsidy is available if needed. If you have any questions about the trip contact a board member or Marc Sender. Remember you can always stay up to date with all things BJUSY throughout the entire year by visiting our new and improved website, www.bethjudeausy.weebly.com and you can sign up for membership by going to http://tinyurl.com/bethjudeayouth. Noteworthy (and Nosh-worthy!) News: Coexistence in the Middle East Taught by Hazzan Weisberg

Whether you’ve had your coffee and nosh already or not, join with Hazzan Weisberg in gaining a better understanding of the newest challenges and opportunities arising for Israel as well as its neighbors. New alliances are swiftly taking shape - are the prospects of a lasting peace greater or are they becoming further diminished? How can we get more honest perspectives from our media sources? What Jewish values and religious principles can be seen when Israel’s leaders are dealing with the Palestinians, with the growing number of Islamic extremist groups, with the Arab world, with the greater international community? We will explore these matters in the months ahead, as events continue to unfold. Tuesdays 8:45-9:30 AM Oct. 14 – Dec. 9, 2014

JUDAISM 201: "What's Bugging Rashi?" Taught by Rabbi Pivo

For nearly a thousand years, Jews have understood the Torah through the eyes of Rabbi Shlomo Yitzhaki, or Rashi. His commentary has been the indispensable source for beginners and expert students alike to understand Torah. Rashi's brief, clear comments are the best starting point for an in-depth study of our most vital texts. The course is open to all but with advanced students in mind; we will use the Hebrew text as much as possible. Tuesday evenings @ 8 pm

SISTERHOOD SOURCE Sisterhood Update - December 2014 It is a pleasure to report that our November 10th Membership Dinner was very successful. The company was wonderful; the food was delicious - thanks to Panosh Catering - and the storytelling by Susan Stone was a delight. Cindy Andreoli's table favors - bookmarks with information on upcoming Sisterhood events - were a hit. As a 'tikun olam" project, we collected books for Bernie's Book Bank to distribute to at risk youth in the Chicago area. Many thanks to Sandy Goldenberg for the beautiful table decorations, to Joni Altman for the lovely calligraphy, to our bartenders Jerry Sakol, Dave Cohn, and Michael Altman, and to Lauri Rosenbloom and her dedicated committee who worked so diligently to make the evening memorable. AND a huge thank you to Lisa Neiman for all her help. Our next big event is the December 7th Chanukah bazaar from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM . Please help us with setting up the week before, giving time to help run the bazaar on that Sunday, and purchasing merchandise. We have so much fun, and it supports Sisterhood and Beth Judea. This event is open to the community, so bring your relatives and friends. Please address any questions to Ann Lerman and Karen Nagel. Welcome home to Rabbi Pivo and everyone who went on the synagogue trip to Israel. Happy Chanukah and a very happy and safe secular New Year to you and yours. - Merle Rumack, Secretary “Where every woman’s voice is heard”

MEN’S CLUB We begin the celebration of Hanukkah this month with the lighting of candles to remind us of the Macabee’s fight for religious freedom. By now most of you should have received Hanukkah candles from Men’s Club. The contributions we receive from these candles help us support youth activities including purchasing of Siddurim for the Aleph class and providing support to synagogue youth groups. Please send your donation to Men’s Club so that we can continue to support these activities and spark light in Jewish life for our young people. Thanks to all of you who participated in the packing and distribution of the Hanukkah candles. The program’s success is due to your participation. Congregation Beth Judea Men’s Club has several interesting and appealing events and programs coming up in the near future. We will be joining Temple Chai Brotherhood for a night out at The Rack in Arlington Heights on December 15 for Monday night football with the Chicago Bears. Contact Allen Harris for further details. On December 11 at 8 PM Sandy Victor will be leading a Stop Smoking Program as part of the Men’s Club Wellness Initiative. This program is free and open to all members of Congregation Beth Judea (and their family members that are living with them). If you smoke, please quit and consider attending this program. Men’s Club is also planning to arrange a Burger and Brew dinner sometime in the spring. Similar to our successful Steak and Scotch in the Sukkah dinner, we plan to have a master brewer provide us with a tasting a various craft beers along with grilled hamburgers. More information will follow. The Adult Hebrew Literacy One class will be graduating on Friday night December 12. This large class of almost a dozen students has worked very hard over the twelve-week course. They have made an extraordinary commitment to further their Jewish education. Please show your support and attend services on Friday night December 12. Thank you to Hazzan Weisberg for teaching the Shiva Minyan course last month as part of the joint program with the Midwest Region of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Club and the Cantor’s Assembly. We had four men complete the course and they will be receiving their certificates at the next Cantor Assembly convention. Please be sure to congratulate Ron Friedman who has been chosen Congregation Beth Judea’s 2015 Man of the Year. Ron serves on the Board of Directors of the Men’s Club. He is instrumental in coordinating Congregation Beth Judea Men’s Club participation in assisting the residents at the Lieberman Center on Shabbat. He can also be found helping in Beth Judea’s kitchen on Shabbat as well as at other events such as the recent Hebrew School Pancake Breakfast. This well deserved Man of the Year award will be presented to Ron on February 22, 2015 at the Man of the Year dinner at Beth Hillel/Congregation B’nai Emunah in Wilmette. It has been a very long time since Congregation Beth Judea Men’s Club organized a retreat for just our members. We are excited to be holding an overnight retreat on February 7-8 for Men’s Club members. This post Shabbat retreat will be held at the Geneva Ridge Resort in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. There will be lots of camaraderie and fun. It will be a complete Men’s Club experience with learning, fitness and ritual activities. Please contact Ron Friedman, Allen Harris or Norm Kurtz if you have any questions or wish to attend. We request that reservations be made by December 15. On behalf of Beth Judea’s Men’s Club, I wish you all a very Happy Hanukkah. Eric Yegelwel

WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records.

We firmly believe that reaching out to others benefits not only the recipient, but the person providing help as well. This is, without a doubt, a win-win situation for all involved. If you are interested in making a difference, please contact one of the Hesed (Caring) committee members below:

Rabbi Pivo Ellene Lammers Wendy Wunsch Evan Rumack

Please call the synagogue office with this information. Do not assume that someone else will have notified the synagogue staff.

A SPECIAL MESSAGE “Its okay, the children aren’t affected” But what if you knew they were? Shalva clients will often say that they can withstand their husband’s abuse as long as he never directs his anger toward their children. What many women don’t understand is that children are the silent victims of abuse and that they often repeat the behaviors they have seen. According to a recent study, over 90% of children are aware of domestic abuse in their home. These children are affected emotionally, cognitively, and physically. They are at great risk and often experience low self-esteem, shame, fear and guilt. Many distrust adults, fail to thrive or suffer from depression and anxiety. What can we do? The issue of domestic abuse is not just a women’s issue; it affects the entire family as well as our Jewish community. SHALVA offers free counseling to Jewish women who are or were in an intimate partner relationship. If you or someone you know needs our help, call 773-583-4673. The Word December 2014
