IN THIS ISSUE
“Creating A Caring Community” The Hebrew word Hesed can be translated as ‘charity,’ ‘kindness,’ ‘love’ and even ‘loyalty.’ The Baal Shem Tov founded a movement that came to be known as Hasidim, ‘the pious ones,’ or ‘the charitable ones.’ When we perform an act of gemilut hasadim, such as helping the needy, tending to the sick or showing kindness to the poor, mourners or others who are suffering, we typically call it an ‘act of loving kindness’ in English. About a year ago, several members of the Beth Judea community organized a new group, the Hesed Committee. Its charge is to live up to each of the meanings of its name, expressing piety by displaying charity, kindness, love and loyalty to our members. In its first year, that group has been maintaining a list of those who are ill and checking in on them by phone or in person. We also use that list in daily prayer to call out to God on behalf of those who are sick. This year, the Hesed Committee is expanding its outreach to include those who are homebound due to frailty or long-term illness. We want to make sure that those members of the shul who are not able to come to the building remain connected to the community and support from the community as needed. This is the kind of sacred work that makes concrete the Jewish values of visiting the sick or elderly and creating community. (continued on next page)

Specifically, the three tasks that the Hesed Committee will now take on include calling those who are homebound or otherwise in need, following up with visits as appropriate, and cooking soup and other simple dishes to bring to those who would benefit from them. Hesed is also planning ways to provide candles, hallah and grape juice for Shabbat to those who want them but cannot otherwise obtain them. In order to achieve these goals we will need your help. If you are able to make a few calls a week, visit a shul member on occasion, cook in the synagogue kitchen, or make deliveries, the work of Hesed will become a reality. We will hold a one-time informational meeting to go over how to perform each of these roles; please join me and our Hesed volunteers on either Sunday June 1st at 10 a.m. and Monday June 2nd at 8 p.m. to learn more and get involved. There are few things that are so simple, yet can make such a huge difference in someone’s life, as one of these acts of hesed. Those who read Torah last year should contact me ASAP to let me know whether they wish to continue reading their assigned section. Even if not planning to continue, a phone call or email would be appreciated. This will allow me to place new readers without giving your reading away unintentionally.
RELIGIOUS SCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM – Jr. Yad Squad for Beginners & Advanced Special opportunity for accelerated incoming BET Students to learn how to read Torah with Hazzan Weisberg on Thursdays at 4:15!! Students who enjoy learning Hebrew and music are invited to get a head start using the ancient musical phrases known as the Trope System, taught by Hazzan Weisberg. After getting to know the trope signs, students will have a chance to prepare small portions in the Torah for Gan Shabbat services in 2015. There is a one-time $60 fee for texts/recordings. Returning Jr. Yad Squad members will be able to continue their Torahreading studies and receive new assignments in the 5:05-5:45 time slot on Thursdays. LAG B’OMER
SHAVUOT SHAVUOT SCHEDULE:
The "Counting of the Omer," which is a mourning period of sorts between Passover and Shavuot originated as an agricultural tradition but became associated with tragic memories in history. Jews suspend the mourning period for one day during the Omer. This day is the Jewish holiday of Lag B'Omer.
In the course of the long centuries of exile, the days between Passover and Shavuot have, on many occasions, been periods of distress and misfortune for the Jewish people. In the Middle Ages, the Crusader massacre of the Jews of Jerusalem took place and one of Rabbi Akiba's students, who had been sentenced to die, hid in a cave until the 18th day of the Jewish month of Iyar, when he learned that the enemy had been defeated. Lag B'Omer is known as the Scholar's Festival, and children throughout the world hold special celebrations to mark the occasion

Beth Judea Men’s Club is again sponsoring our annual Mother’s Day Lox Box program. Last year we sold over 400, and we set this year’s goal at 500. The profit from this program supports a number of programs in the Synagogue and the local ARK food pantry. An integral part of the Lox Box is a bag of advertising/promotional give-a-ways donated by local merchants. Herb Keinon is an American-born Israeli journalist. He has staffed various beats for The Jerusalem Post since 1985, and became diplomatic correspondent in 2000. In that capacity, Keinon covers the prime minister and the foreign minister, and often travels with the prime minister on his trips abroad.

Congregant Steven Peck has built what is probably the world's largest model collection of Israeli Air Force planes, along with El Al Airlines planes and IDF Armored Corps tanks. He has acquired almost every type of plane that has served in the IAF, which is over 100 aircraft. He will be displaying most of them at Shabbat services this Friday night, May 2, in honor of Israel Independence Day. He will be discussing some of the stories of their involvement in the War of Independence, with a mostly rag tag collection of smuggled and salvaged planes, along with some of the more interesting stories of the planes which have served since then in what would now be considered the world's second most powerful air force.

B’NAI MITZVAH BIO Scott David Schwerdlin will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, May 3, 2014. Scott is a seventh grader at Aptaskisic Junior High School in Buffalo Grove.
Scott loves sports of all kinds and enjoys playing on the AJHS volleyball team and the Buffalo Grove Bills football team. He has played on the Buffalo Grove Bills for a few years. In his spare time, Scott enjoys playing games, video games, and hanging out with his friends. Most of all, Scott loves playing with his pug dogs, Ripples, Toby, and Moby. Family and friends have always been very important to Scott, and he feels very lucky to be commemorating this special day surrounded by so many. Scott will be celebrating with his proud parents, Ethel and Mitchell, his younger brother Jacob, his older siblings Lara, Jeremy and Emily, brother-in-law Lechaim, nephew Ravi and grandmother Nancy Schwerdlin. Although Scott’s grandparents, Sam and Bella Drate and Lawrence Schwerdlin, as well as aunts and uncle; Jack and Sylvia Drate, Karen Schwerdlin and his dog Pugsley are no longer with us, they will always be a part of Scott and will always be in our hearts. Scott is honored that so many friends and family members will be traveling from places such as Massachusetts, Tennessee, Georgia, Texas, Florida, and New York.
Scott would like to thank Rabbi Pivo, Hazzan Weisberg for helping him prepare for this special day and all of his teachers for their guidance and assistance during his Hebrew education. He is especially indebted to his tutor, Andrea Dickson for her patience, dedication and enthusiasm.
Kyle Wunsch will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, May 17, 2014. Kyle is a 7th grader at Twin Groves Middle School. Kyle loves playing hockey and lacrosse outside of school, and he enjoys playing volleyball on his school team. When Kyle is not playing sports or spending time with his friends and family, he volunteers regularly in the community, and participates in fundraisers helping others. Kyle will be celebrating this milestone with his parents, brother, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Kyle would like to thank his tutor, Andrea Dickson, Hazzan Weisberg, and Rabbi Pivo for helping him prepare for this special day.
Jeremy Brandon Getlin will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on May 31, 2014. Jeremy is a seventh grader at Hawthorn Middle School South, in Vernon Hills. You can find Jeremy playing some kind of sport all year long. He plays lacrosse, basketball, and this year will be playing football. Jeremy is also very musical. He plays both the piano and violin. Jeremy will be celebrating his bar mitzvah with his very excited sister Rebekah, his proud parents Aaron and Eve Getlin, and grandparents Judy and George Peyovich, and Howard Getlin and Eileen Rosengard. Jeremy would like to thank all his Hebrew school teachers, Anna Besser, Rabbi Pivo, and Hazzan Weisberg for all their hard work and dedication, making it possible for him to achieve this day.

A SPECIAL MESSAGE “Its okay, the children aren’t affected” But what if you knew they were? Shalva clients will often say that they can withstand their husband’s abuse as long as he never directs his anger toward their children. What many women don’t understand is that children are the silent victims of abuse and that they often repeat the behaviors they have seen. According to a recent study, over 90% of children are aware of domestic abuse in their home. These children are affected emotionally, cognitively, and physically. They are at great risk and often experience low selfesteem, shame, fear and guilt. Many distrust adults, fail to thrive or suffer from depression and anxiety. What can we do? The issue of domestic abuse is not just a women’s issue; it affects the entire family as well as our Jewish community.
DIVORCE SUPPORT GROUP Divorce Support Group
Experiencing a divorce can be one of the most difficult and stressful transitions in life, affecting adults, children, and extended family. We are reaching out as a synagogue community to those who are in the process of divorcing, or have recently gone through a divorce, to offer support at this extremely stressful time. This group, designed for both men and women, would meet weekly with our member Ellene Lammers, a trained therapist, and Rabbi Pivo. Orin Rotman will facilitate this weekly Talmud study session. EDUCATION This year, we celebrate Israel’s 66th anniversary on May 5th. Each year at CBJ, we present activity centers that allow all of our students to enjoy different aspects of Israel. This year is no different, and opportunities will abound to explore Israel from various perspectives. In the years following Israel’s establishment, there was an excitement about the miracle of Israel’s creation. There was finally a homeland for the Jewish people. We no longer needed to feel like strangers who had no land of our own. Over the years, Israel has grown and developed into a thriving country always on the cutting edge of new developments. While orchards and kibbutzim still have a place in Israel today, there are many more manufacturing plants, high-rises, five-star hotels, and much more. Israel is a modern, vibrant and booming country and also a global leader today in technology. Many of our students think of Israel as a dusty Biblical-appearing land. They find it hard to believe that it is a vibrant, thriving, exciting country with a majority Jewish population. It is important for us to find a way to excite our children about Israel and teach them the importance of this tiny country, our children will not see the need to fight for Israel’s existence. So what can we do to educate and excite our children about Israel? Here are some suggestions. o Israeli Food – have an Israeli dinner night and get your taste-buds acclimated to Israel. Enjoy falafel, pita, hummus, tahini, Israeli salad and many other Israeli delights! o Israeli Music – like most of our children, I love listening to up and coming artists. Their music is fresh and has a great beat to it. Introduce your children to the newest Israeli artists like the Eylan Gulan, Miri Musica and many more. I guarantee you they will enjoy the music! o Books about Israel – read some books about Israel, both fictional and non-fiction. There is a wide range of age appropriate books about Israel that are engaging and easy to read. o Hatikvah – take some time to learn the Hatikvah, Israel’s national anthem. Do you know that there was another poem submitted to be Israel’s national anthem? o Israel and Tikkun Olam – Israel strives to live up to the biblical mandate of being a “light unto the nations.” From medical assistance to disaster relief, Israel is at the forefront of helping others. As a family, find one organization in Israel that you can donate your Tzedakah to for the year.

EDUCATION END OF YEAR SCHOOL EVENTS: It’s hard to believe how fast this school year has gone. As we bring a close to our school year, we need to thank our teachers who make every effort to reach each of our students on an individual level. Calendar Contest: Each year, many Beth Judea students participate in the Shalom Memorial Calendar Contest. Shalom Memorial is celebrating their EIGHTH year of producing this unique Jewish calendar that features original artwork created by our local Jewish students. The contest runs through June 1, 2014 and is open to ALL grade levels. Contest details and registration are attached. The odds of “winning” in this contest are good as entries will be limited to students attending either a local Hebrew School or Day School. Quite simply: Artwork must be original. Artwork must depict some aspect of Jewish life. Deadline for submission is June 1st.

YOUTH Dear Beth Judea FamilyThis past month has been quite an exciting one for all of our youth at Congregation Beth Judea. We had our annual spring Youth Shabbat service, complete with an entirely youth read Torah service, had someone come in from Or Tzedek, painted and played at Arts and Crafts night, and finally sent 29 incredible delegates to the annual CHUSY spring Kinnus. We have been really finishing up the year in style, and we are not quite finished yet. On Tuesday, May 20th at 6:00 pm we will be having our annual installation dinner for all of our BJUSY supporters and USYers and their families. Prior to the installations, our annual elections will be May 6th at 7:00 pm; come out and have a say in next year’s leaders. I would like to send a special mazel tov to Allison Flack for helping co-chair the incredible Kinnus weekend, and a huge mazel tov to Larry Bender and Sarah Heiger for their recent election to the CHUSY regional executive board (Communication VP and Social Action/ Tikun Olam VP, respectively). I would also like to wish a yasher koach to Cara Golberg for her incredible service to the chapter and region this past year, as she just completed her term as the regional Membership/Kadima Vice-President. Finally, on the following page, is a message from Rebecca Katz, Manager of Teen Programs for the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs (JCUA). SISTERHOOD SOURCE We hope everyone had a wonderful Pesach. Due to the holiday, we did not plan many events for April; however, we held a double book club event discussing both Swimming Across the Hudson by Joshua Henkin and the Women’s League Orpah’s Book Club Selection, The Purim Superhero by Elizabeth Kushner. Thank you to Brenda Levin for hosting this event. Hopefully, you were able to hear Debbi Green’s inspiring speech on her mother’s story and her own experiences at the Yom HaShoah Service held at Beth Judea. As many of you know, Debbi is not only a member of our Sisterhood Exec Board, but is also the current Central Great Lakes Region President for Women’s League. The next Women’s League Convention will be held from July 17-20, 2014 in Whippany NJ. This year’s theme is “Balancing the Sacred and the Everyday.” Information on registration will be forthcoming from Women’s League. On Sunday May 4th, Gloria Adelson, a trainer from Women’s League, will be discussing Leadership Development and Team Building. MEN’S CLUB This past month was a busy one for Men's Club. MEN'S CLUB SHABBAT A very special yasher koach to Eric Yegelwel for chairing this year's Men's Club shabbat. All of us in attendance found that his efforts, in conjunction with Norm Kurtz and Orin Rotman, made this a wonderfully engaging service. Beyond that, the variety of honorees brought life and meaning to the service. Of course, we couldn't have made this happen without the involvement of our clergy: Rabbi Pivo, Hazzan Weissberg and Rabbi Lifshitz.
FJMC YELLOW CANDLE AND COMMUNITY YOM HASHOAH SERVICE Once again, the Men's Club provided synagogue members with special yellow candles. We hope that you were able to join families around the world light these candles in memory of the six million lost. The community service, hosted by Beth Judea, helped to ensure that we never forget for generations to come. A yasher koach to Debbie Green for delivering an inspiring speech on her mother's plight through the horrors of the holocaust. ALIYAH IN OUR 60’s FROM ARLINGTON HTS, IL TO CAESEREA, ISRAEL (Part 25) L TO R: HOWIE GOODMAN, SUZANNE GOODMAN, AND BEVERLY GOODMAN TCHERNOV NEAR EILAT, ISRAEL Howie and Suzanne Goodman were valued members at Beth Judea until they decided to make aliyah in 2009. The Goodmans have agreed to provide us with a blog on their experiences as new olim in Israel. Though we continue to miss the Goodmans, we can all look forward to reading about their adventures in Israel through the blog.
Aliyah in Our 60’s – May 2014 - Part 25 We go on tiyulim ,or day trips, with a group once a month. This allows us to visit things of current interest and historic sites in Israel. We are always visiting places and learning things which make us very proud of our history and modern day Israel. In April, our trip included visiting the new Gush Katif Center which was very emotional and thought provoking. This commemoration exhibit is located in Nitzan in the northern Negev not far from the Gaza Strip. It was created to inform the public about the Gush Katif settlements that were evacuated in 2005 before we made aliyah to Israel. We remember seeing on the news reports of IDF soldiers enforcing this “disengagement from the Gaza”. The soldiers were hugging the settlers as they forced them out of their homes. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon had at first believed that this area should be settled, and then the Israeli government under him decided that it should be evacuated as part of the push for peace with the Palestinians. . Our guide for the tour was conducted by a young lady who lived in Gush Katif settlement from 5 years old until the evacuation when she was 18. Her family had made aliyah from the States. She related stories of hiding in the closet as a missile landed near their house. She said this was one of 5000 mortar shellings on settlements in the Gaza Strip. In spite of the attacks they loved life in their community. As we progressed through the center there was a series of video presentations. The main character of the videos was a boy who was the last boy born in Gush Katif before the evacuation. More than eight thousand people who lived in seventeen Jewish communities in the Gaza Strip. The video presentations conveyed the life of Jewish settlers building a good life in Israel. It was a very sad story of how their homes, industrial buildings, schools, and synagogues were demolished. Being moved caused some older people to have heart attacks. People lost the businesses they had built. There were young people who were getting ready to join the IDF, and it was puzzling to be forced out of their homes by the army. This is one of the most difficult things Israel has ever done. This was land that our patriarchs Abraham and Isaac settled, a biblical part of Israel. We gave up this land in the War of Independence , and it was won back in the Six Day War. This is the second time that Jews have left the Gaza Strip. Despite the terrorist attacks in the area, agriculture was thriving and there was a very good quality of life in the settlements. ALIYAH IN OUR 60’s (continued from previous page) The disengagement was proposed by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on June 6, 2004 and enacted in August 2005. Citizens who refused the government compensation packages and to voluntarily vacate their homes prior to the August 15 deadline were evicted by the Israeli Security forces over the period of several days. Four settlements in the northern West Bank were also evacuated. The disengagement began with Operation “Yad l’Achim,” which means “giving brothers a hand”. IDF soldiers helped the settlers who chose to move voluntarily with packing and moving their belongings. The IDF also provided crews of social nurses, psychologists and support to youths. On the tour we watched a video of the officer in command of the evacuation in Gush Katif talking to a group of residents at a meeting. The officer was in tears. There were activists protesting this move. However, most of the residents chose to avoid violence and went peacefully.
The evacuated settlements were razed by demolition crews, with 2,530 homes being destroyed. The IDF dismantled Gush Katif’s 48 grave cemetery. All were reburied in locations of their families’ choosing. All the bodies were moved by special teams of soldiers supervised by the Military Rabbinate. Residents were given relocation compensation depending on the family, house size, how long they had lived there and other factors. Some of the communities moved as a group to other locations of Israel. Some moved away on their own; others are still living in caravans waiting to find new homes. Only sixty percent of the settlers are now in permanent homes. The relocation package was often not sufficient to cover higher cost of housing in other parts of the country. Overall there is a thirty percent unemployment among families from Gush Katif compared to five percent nationally. According to Wikipedia, over the years Israel has spent approximately one billion dollars for relocation benefits to the people who were moved.
Before the evacuation, remnants of the eighteen synagogues in the Gaza Strip were collected. There is a beautiful mosaic that an artist had created from these pieces of glass, tiles and ornaments. Part of the artwork are pictures of the synagogues. All but two of the synagogues of the settlements were left intact. (These synagogues along with greenhouses left intact were destroyed by Palestinian mobs after the evacuation.) The two synagogues that were not left there were dismantled and reconstructed elsewhere.
We remember when this evacuation occurred. We didn’t live in Israel, and it seemed “from a distance,” that Ariel Sharon and Israel might be doing the right thing. President Bush thought it was good for the peace process. In fact, at that time the US gave the Palestinians 50 million dollars to help them develop new housing and infrastructure projects in the Gaza. As in current negotiations, the intent was that they would know that Israel was willing to make sacrifices to have peace. Following the withdrawal, Hamas was elected as the Palestinian government and Operation “Summer Rains” started within a year. Hamas has in their constitution that they will eliminate Jews in Israel and they have fired thousands of missiles into Israel. Maybe this evacuation was a mistake. Will we look back at our recent concession to release 78 prisoners with American and Israeli blood on their hands and wonder if that was a mistake? (continued on next page)

ALIYAH IN OUR 60’s (continued from previous page) On the lighter side, Howie believes he has determined that sometimes it is better to be dumb or play dumb. After a recent doctor’s appointment in Or Akiva he was opening an envelope and cut his right thumb. He had nothing to stop the bleeding and decided to quickly drive home. After making a right hand turn out of the mall parking lot a policeman standing on the street pulled him over. After pulling him over, the policeman said, in Hebrew, of course, "What did you do?" and pointed to where Howie had turned right. Howie assumed he had not come to a complete stop, after which he pointed his bleeding thumb towards the sign. It was really bleeding. The policeman looked at the wound and said something. Howie thought the policeman said to wait. After waiting ten minutes, Howie got out of the car. The policeman looked and and asked why he was still there! Howie got back into the car and drove home without getting a ticket! As you know, many events of significance have occurred in the early part of April. Ehud Olmert, former Prime Minister of Israel, was found guilty of many counts of lying and bribery. Everyone seemed to know of his corruption but never thought Olmert would be found guilty. We have had mixed feelings regarding the system in Israel of no juries, only judges. With some of the strange verdicts that have occurred in the United States with juries, we expected judges to be much better, relying on the law. However, Israeli courts have also had some strange verdicts. Howie, as mentioned in a previous article, went in front of a judge regarding a traffic accident. Howie was told that Israel has no partial fault type of judgement, and the other driver was found not at fault. There have been hit and run situations that ended with what seemed very "light" sentencing in our viewpoint. Some people guilty of pre-meditated murder are given sentences of ten years. In addition, they are usually given weekend passes. Once, when we were here volunteering for Sar-El on an army base, Howie worked with prisoners. One had murdered someone in an argument. Another had embezzled the equivalent of $100,000. They were in prison but were given weekend passes. When Howie asked if the prisons were not concerned about them not returning, both replied basically, where could we go? Perhaps Gaza? Lebanon? Syria? Jordan? Egypt? Or the Mediterranean Sea?
Another major event was the possible ending of the Peace Process. Netanyahu wouldn't release the remaining 26 Palestinian prisoners unless there would be an extension of the dates of the negotiations. Abbas refused and applied to 15 International organizations for different types of recognition. Jonathan Pollard’s release for the release of the Palestinians was prominently mentioned in the Hebrew and English newspapers of Israel. There was a lot of speculation that Netanyahu's coalition government would have toppled if the prisoner release had occurred. Previously released Palestinian prisoners have been greeted as POWS by the Palestinian government. They are terrorists who have murdered civilians, some of whom were Americans. Here are Abbas's new demands to resume talks: • • • • • • •
Written message from Netanyahu recognizing the 1967 armistice lines as Palestine’s borders, with East Jerusalem as its Capital. Release 1200 Palestinian prisoners, including Marwan Barghouti, Fuad Shubaki and Ahmad Sadat. Lift the siege on Gaza. Grant amnesty and bring back the Palestinians deported after the Church of the Nativity siege. Stop settlement construction and institution building in occupied Jerusalem, and grant free access. Allow 15000 Palestinian reunification with families and grant them Israeli citizenship. Give PA complete control over Area C, and stop military operations and arrests in Areas A and B. (This means Israel cannot enter to arrest terrorists.)

ALIYAH IN OUR 60’s (continued from previous page) Marwan Barghouti is considered the leader of the two Intifadas. Abbas wants him released. There are rumors Abbas wants him to be the next president of Palestine. Many people believe Abbu Mazzan ( Abbas) was the bagman for the funding of the Munich Massacre. When Abu Daoud, the brains behind the Munich Massacre died in Damascas in 2010, Abbas sent a letter of condolence to his family telling about his never ending fight for the Palestinians. Many Israelis feel that Israel should let Abbas go to the International Criminal Court to charge Israel with "War Crimes". If he would, then Abbas should be tried for crimes by filtering money to Hamas. To be fair, we just read that one of the Palestinians released in the first wave is teaching tolerance to kids in the West Bank. Obviously, we don't know what the future will bring for Israel. The administration of the United States is publicly blaming Israel for the failure of the recent peace talks. It isn’t helpful to decide at this point who is to blame. We want to live in peace with our neighbors and wish that there could be true negotiations. Israel wants peace. However, there are some major points on which each side is not willing to budge. We believe that whether the two sides talk about talking in the future or not, it is important for the various ministries on both sides to continue to interact. These interactions are regarding finance, agriculture, preservation of water, and many other areas. Prime Minister Netanyahu, in our opinion, should not have discontinued these interactions between ministers. On May 5, we will have our Remembrance Day of those lost in the struggle for Israel to become and remain a Jewish State. On May 6, we will celebrate the 66th Independence Day Anniversary of the State of Israel. May we, our children, and all future generations of Israelis be able to celebrate the continued existence of Israel!

“Two Among the Righteous Few” On the evening of April 23, 2014, about 50 members and guests gathered at Congregation Beth Judea in Long Grove, Illinois to hear Marty Brounstein read and talk about his book, “Two Among the Righteous Few: A Story of Courage.” Mr. Brounstein gave background information about the rise of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust which followed with the coming of Hitler. He then described the heroic actions of Frans and Mien Wijnakker, two ordinary Christian, young married Dutch folks who lived with their four children in a small village in Holland. Frans was asked to shelter a young Jewish woman as the Nazis began to round up the Jews. He agreed to do this for a short time. Time went on, the woman stayed and more folks came to the Wijnakker home, a very small home. There were some twenty “guests” who live with Frans and Mien throughout the occupation. Two of them were married and had a little girl while in hiding. Turns out that Marty Brounstein married that little girl, Mien! Frans and his wife, Mien, were honored for their bravery and humanity with a plaque on the Avenue of the Righteous at Yad Vashem. Photos and article by Bob Weissman
