RABBI’S REFLECTIONS
IN THIS ISSUE
“From Slavery to Freedom, Wandering and Conquest” All year we are studying the content of the Torah in many ways: ongoing classes, shorter or even single-session units, brief discussions after morning or evening services and here, in my monthly article. In previous months I have described the content of the first three books of the Torah. We continue this month with a summary of the Torah’s fourth book, Numbers/Bemidbar. The book is well named. It concerns the exploits of the Israelites during the forty years they wandered from Egypt to Canaan. It begins with a census of the people in parshat Bemidbar, as the journey commences. Parshat Naso continues with the duties of some of the levitical clans, rules for purifying the camp and preparations for the use of the mishkan, the portable shrine that housed the ark. In the next parsha, Beha’alotkha, the final preparations for the use of the mishkan are spelled out, the journey begins, and the people begin to complain about life in the wilderness. In Shelakh Lekha, Moses sends out a group of spies, one from each tribe, to scout out the land of Canaan, but the scouts discourage the idea of conquering it, and God sentences the entire generation to wander until the adults all die in the wilderness. The Torah mentions a number of laws on various subjects, and then in parshat Korakh we witness a real rebellion against the leadership of Moses and Aaron by their fellow Levite Korakh. After that rebellion is put down, God reaffirms the role of the Levites as members of the priesthood. Next, in parshat Hukkat, we read about the purification of those who come into contact with the dead, the Torah reports the death of Miriam, Moses and Aaron’s sister, and the Israelites confront Moses and Aaron for more water. Aaron’s role as kohein gadol, High Priest, is

UPSTAIRS THOUGHTS RABBI’S REFLECTIONS “From Slavery to Freedom, Wandering and Conquest” transferred to his son Eleazar, and Aaron dies. In parshat Balak we learn about the attempt of King Balak to curse the Israelites through the prophet Bilaam, a rare instance of what we might call fable and even humor in the Torah. At the end of this parsha there is an episode of idolatry among the people, which is punished at the beginning of the next parsha, Pinkhas. That parsha includes a lengthy list of the clans and descendants of each of the tribes, the laws of inheritance, the succession of Moses by Joshua, as well as a calendar of public sacrifices. Parshat Mattot discusses vows and oaths, and the circumstances in which they are binding, the account of a war against the Midianites, and a description of some of the tribes settling east of the Jordan river. In the final parsha of the book, Mas’ei, the Torah speaks of the boundaries of the land, the cases of homicide and manslaughter, and additional laws about inheritance. While a great deal happens in the book, we should note that with few exceptions the events it describes occur near the beginning and end of the wilderness years, which is to say just as the Israelites are leaving Egypt and just as they approach the end of the forty years of wandering. Most of the 38 years in the middle are passed over with little comment. That is probably an indication that the importance of those years is the transition to a new generation. Those who came out of Egypt were timid and unready to assume the responsibilities of liberation, so the task of conquering Canaan and establishing God’s covenant in the land fell to their children. From a certain perspective, the end of the book of Bemidbar is the end of the story of the Israelites’ history, the journey that began with Abraham and Sarah. If we did not have Deuteronomy we might not have missed it in terms of what happened to the people. Next month we will see what the fifth, final, book of the Torah has to add to that story in terms of what that narrative meant as the Israelites stand at the edge of the Promised Land.

B’NAI MITZVAH BIO Shaina Pearl Wenk will be called to the Torah as a bat mitzvah on Saturday, February 7, 2015.
Abigail Golde will be called to the Torah as a bat mitzvah on Saturday, February 21, 2015.
Shaina is a 7th grader at Twin Groves Middle School. Shaina is on the Twin Groves Colts Poms squad and began playing lacrosse this fall with the Illinois Girls Lacrosse Association.
Abby is a seventh grade High Honor Roll student at Hawthorn Middle School South. In her free time, she enjoys hanging out with her friends, singing in the school choir, running cross country and track on her school's team, ice skating, and art.
Shaina also loves to shop, cook, hang out with friends and watch TV. Shaina’s mitzvah projects focused on two of her favorite things – pets and B'nai B'rith Beber Camp in Mukwonago, WI. Shaina has spent many hours volunteering with Orphans of the Storm. She has spent time “showing animals” that are up for adoption, and collecting blankets to donate to the shelter. Just in time for Rosh Hashanah, Shaina held a bake sale to support the B’nai B’rith Beber Camp Scholarship Fund. She raised money to help ensure that every child has the opportunity to experience Jewish overnight camp, just like she has for the last 3 amazing summers. Joining in Shaina's special day are her extremely proud parents, Hillary & Brian, older sister, Brooke, Grammie Susan Stouber, and many more friends and family. This day is made even more special as Shaina chants from the same Parsha as her sister did, three years ago. Shaina would like to thank Hazzan Weisberg and Andrea Dickson for helping prepare her for this wonderful occasion. A special thanks to Rabbi Pivo for his help with Shaina’s D’var Torah.

EDUCATION Tu B'Shvat and Ba’al Tashchit: How Much Do We Waste? Tu B’Shevat is one of four New Years on the Jewish calendar. In ancient times, it was necessary to know the age of a tree so that its fruit could be eaten at the proper age (in the 4th year of the tree’s life; Leviticus 19:23-25). Trees are a wonderful creation upon which we are all dependent. Tu B’Shevat marks the beginning of spring in Israel. When our ancestors left Israel, Tu B’Shevat represented an opportunity to reconnect with the land of Israel. The seven species, symbolic of Tu B’Shevat, represent foods that grow in Israel: wheat, barley, grapes, olives, figs, pomegranates, and (date) honey. In modern times, Tu B’Shevat has come to represent ecological issues. Ba’al Tashchit, a Jewish value, teaches us to not waste or destroy anything needlessly. Below are some statistics on American consumption patterns, emphasizing how much waste we produce, how much we throw away each year. • The average person in the US produces 4 pounds of garbage a day. • The average person in the US throws away about 20 pounds of nonfood waste each week (this includes paper, glass, plastic, and metals). • The average American uses and discards 690 pounds of paper a year. Average use worldwide is only 100 pounds of paper per person each year. • Only 25.6% of the 71.8 million tons of paper waste, 12% of the 12.5 million tons of glass waste, 31.7% of the 2.5 million tons of aluminum waste, and 1.1% of the 14.4 million tons of plastic waste our country produces is recovered. • It takes 95% less energy to produce an aluminum can from an existing one than it does to produce one from raw materials. • Recycling the paper from one Sunday edition of the New York Times would save 75,000 trees. • Recycling plastics save twice as much energy as burning them in an incinerator. (http://www.coejl.org/resources/baal-tashchit-how-much-do-we-waste/)
Does this information surprise you? Do you think your own family consumes or wastes more or less than average? An average amount? So how can we put Ba’al Tashchit into practice? Through recycling efforts, conservation of natural resources, exploring reusable energy and much more! If we were to buy only products that use minimal recyclable packaging, that would exemplify Ba’al Taschit.

HUMASH w/RASHI Judaism 201: `What’s Bugging Rashi?’ (Rabbi Pivo) Tuesday Evenings at 8:00 pm begins Nov. 4, 2014 -May For nearly a thousand years, Jews have understood the Torah through the eyes of Rabbi Shlomo Yitzhaki, or Rashi. His commentary has been the indispensable source for beginners and expert students alike to understand Torah. Rashi’s brief, clear comments are the best starting point for an in-depth study of our most vital texts. The course is open to all but with advanced students in mind; we will use the Hebrew text as much as possible. TASTE OF TORAH: Sweet Taste of Torah: Kohelet & Song of Songs Wednesday evenings at 8 pm For thousands of years, Judaism has been interpreting and applying the Torah to everyday life. This class follows the Tanach cycle. Each week we will read through several chapters a week of the Nevim (Prophets) texts, then on to Ketuvim (Writings), then back to Torah again. Parsha Perspectives Thursday evenings after minyan (7:45—8:00 pm) Do you have 10 minutes to spare? It only takes 10 minutes to get started on a lifelong journey. Spend each Thursday after Minyan learning about the upcoming Parsha with Rabbi Pivo, and before you know it you'll have completed hours of Torah study. PARSHA OF THE WEEK Shabbat Torah/Haftarah Study Shabbat morning at 9 am Join a study/discussion of the week’s parsha. We will discuss questions raised by the participants.

SISTERHOOD SOURCE Sisterhood Update - February 2015 In the movie, "Fiddler on the Roof", is a beautiful, song "Shabbat Prayer", in which Golda blesses their daughters with the line "May you be like Ruth and like Esther.” With Purim coming next month, it is appropriate to think about how we may be more like those two brave heroines of our ancient literature. Perhaps we could all be more of many things such as patient, understanding, independent, observant, active in synagogue, in effort to contribute to tikkun olam (repairing the world). In repairing the world, we repair ourselves too. One way Sisterhood was able to contribute to tikkun olam was by collecting 220 children's books to be distributed by Bernie's Book Bank to "at risk" youth in the Chicago area. We hope that Ruth and Esther would have been as proud and delighted with this effort as we were. In repairing the world, we repair ourselves too. Here are some upcoming events that bring us camaraderie, fun, and renewal: •
2/17/15
Sisterhood "Schmooze Night“
•
2/21/15
Nosh-A-Night
•
2/23/15

•

We also hope that everyone will support the synagogue's Purim Masquerade ball honoring Mitch and Ann Lerman as King and Queen.

Laskin honors the traditions, the lives and the choices of his ancestors (revolutionaries, entrepreneurs, scholars, farmers, tycoons and truck drivers), who were separated by the upheavals in western Russia. The Family is a deeply personal, dramatic and emotional account of people caught in a cataclysmic time in world history.

MEN’S CLUB The Men’s Club Retreat is moving forward! The Congregation Beth Judea’s Men’s Club Retreat is scheduled for February 7-8, 2015 at the Geneva Ridge Resort in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Twenty-nine men have signed up. The size of this turnout is beyond our most optimistic expectations. Hopefully, this is a sign of the strength of our Men’s Club and an indication of our future success. The retreat will be a fun weekend of great programming, relaxation, food, and schmoozing. The Midwest Region Man of the Year/Youth of the Year dinner is scheduled for Sunday, February 22, 2015 at Beth Hillel Congregation Bnai Emunah in Wilmette, IL from 5 PM to 8 PM. This year we honor Ron Friedman as our Man of the Year and Larry Bender as our Youth of the Year. It is not too late to make dinner reservations. If you are unable to attend the dinner, you can still honor both Ron and Larry by purchasing an advertisement in the ad book for the program. Please see the links at the end of this article for instructions for purchasing an ad and making dinner reservations. Our next Tap the Torah discussion, led by Orin Rotman, is scheduled for Thursday evening, February 19, 2015 at 8 PM at the Continental Restaurant in Buffalo Grove, IL. Join us for a lively Torah discussion on a timely and entertaining topic over a beer or any beverage of your choice. Eat, drink and be merry. On Monday evening, February 23, at 7 PM Men’s Club has planned another get together at the Beer Market in Vernon Hills. We will supply the pizza. Each attendee will cover their own drinks. More than thirty men attended our last get together at the Beer Market in September. We hope to have even more participants this year. Despite the cold and snowy weather, we will discuss the upcoming softball season for our championship team. We are considering fielding two teams in 2015. We are planning a Craft Beer and Burger Event at Congregation Beth Judea Sunday evening April 26, 2015. Please save the date. More information will follow. The Congregation Beth Judea Programming Committee has scheduled a Lay Led Shabbat on Friday, February 13, 2015. If you have not yet attended one of these special services, please consider attending this one. They are spiritually uplifting and filled with ruach. All Men’s Club members and their families are urged to show your support and attend this special Shabbat service. Men’s Club sponsored a PADS dinner on Christmas Day December 25, 2014 at the United Church of Christ in Arlington Heights. We also had six volunteers who served dinner to those less fortunate than we. Yasher Koach to Kitty and Bruce Hoffman, Jerry Sakol, Maynard and Carole Hirsh and Charles and Renee Lustig. A special thank you to Kitty Hoffman for making all the arrangements necessary to have made this possible. Yom Hashoah is April 15-16, 2015. Men’s Club is scheduled to pack Yellow Yom HaShoah Candles on Sunday March 15. Routes will be mapped out and distributed to our members who will deliver the candles to most of the members of Congregation Beth Judea. This process will be similar to how the Hanukah candles were successfully distributed. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. The memory, lessons, and magnitude of the Holocaust inconceivably continue to fade away. We commemorate this meaningful, historic occasion with the Federation of Jewish Men’s Club Yellow Candle Program. This is a vital, important, and symbolic way to show our solidarity and resolve that we will never forget! Eric Yegelwel

RON FRIEDMAN Ron Friedman is Congregation Beth Judea’s 2015 Men’s Club Man of the Year. He is has been married for forty-five years to his beautiful, wonderful, and understanding wife Jean. Ron is the proud father of four daughters and one granddaughter. He is happily retired after a long commercial banking career. Ron now spends his free time reading, working out, summer gardening, and completing “honey do” chores. Before moving to Buffalo Grove from Skokie in 1987, he served 8.5 years on District 68 School Board, including one term as Board President. Ron and Jean joined Congregation Beth Judea 26 years ago.. Ron currently serves on the synagogue Finance Committee. Recently he has become more active in the Men’s Club. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Men’s Club and is instrumental in coordinating Congregation Beth Judea’s Men’s Club participation in assisting the residents at the Lieberman Center on Shabbat. Ron has found his experience with Men’s Club to be immensely enriching due to the “menschlichkeit” generated by a truly wonderful group of men. He would like to give a special shout out to those in the group (who modestly prefer anonymity) whose leadership and traits of charity, spirituality, and morality have been inspirations for him to emulate. Ron is both honored and humbled to have been chosen for this award and hopes he can live up to the high standards set by his predecessors. LARRY BENDER Larry Bender is Congregation Beth Judea’s Men’s Club 2015 Youth of the Year. Larry is currently a senior at Chicagoland Jewish High School. He has been very active in Beth Judea’s award winning USY chapter serving as co-editor of the Chapter newsletter and Vice President of Communications. More recently, Larry has assumed regional leadership roles as co-chair of the Fall USY Convention and Regional Vice President of Communications. He has also participated in USY on Wheels Mission Mitzvah and the USY Pilgrimage to Israel. In addition to USY activities, Larry has been a strong supporter and advocate for Israel. He is active in StandWithUs having worked with them as a teen intern. He has attended both the 2013 AIPAC High School Summit held in Washington, D.C. in 2013 and the AIPAC Policy Conference also held in Washington, D.C. in 2014. Sports are Larry’s other passion. He has played for both the baseball and the bowling teams for Chicagoland Jewish High School for the past three years. He has also worked as a baseball umpire for several years. He was selected to receive the Best Umpire Award in 2009. Currently, Larry is the youngest member to have ever served on the Congregation Beth Judea Board of Directors. He is a member of the Education, Ritual, Membership and Israel committees. After graduation, Larry plans to spend a year is Israel attending NATIV which will provide him a unique opportunity to continue his journey to becoming an adult Conservative Jewish leader of tomorrow.

LIFE IN ISRAEL – THE GOODMAN’S BLOG Howie and Suzanne Goodman were valued members at Beth Judea until they decided to make aliyah in 2009. The Goodmans have agreed to provide us with a blog on their experiences as new olim in Israel. Though we continue to miss the Goodmans, we can all look forward to reading about their adventures in Israel through the blog. In this issue, they give us an update on the Israeli election process and tell us about the Druze in Israel.
“There are almost daily articles in the local newspapers about events that seem to be inconceivable but true.”...Click here to share their experience.
SHALVA “Its okay, the children aren’t affected” But what if you knew they were?
Shalva clients will often say that they can withstand their husband’s abuse as long as he never directs his anger toward their children. What many women don’t understand is that children are the silent victims of abuse and that they often repeat the behaviors they have seen. According to a recent study, over 90% of children are aware of domestic abuse in their home. These children are affected emotionally, cognitively, and physically. They are at great risk and often experience low self-esteem, shame, fear and guilt. Many distrust adults, fail to thrive or suffer from depression and anxiety. What can we do? The issue of domestic abuse is not just a women’s issue; it affects the entire family as well as our Jewish community. SHALVA offers free counseling to Jewish women who are or were in an intimate partner relationship. If you or someone you know needs our help, call 773-583-4673.

WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records.
We firmly believe that reaching out to others benefits not only the recipient, but the person providing help as well. This is, without a doubt, a win-win situation for all involved. If you are interested in making a difference, please contact one of the Hesed (Caring) committee members below:
