RABBI’S REFLECTIONS

IN THIS ISSUE

“The Search for Sanctity” Each month this year we are learning a bit about the content of the Torah as we share in the sacred process of study and celebration of a Shanah Torah (Year of Torah). I remind you that each day of the week our clergy and lay leaders are teaching some aspect of Torah and that there is no time like the present to engage in study. In this space we have so far learned the Hebrew names of the Torah’s books and reviewed the content of Bereshit/Genesis and Shemot/Exodus.

This month we will continue our study of the Torah as we cover the contents of its third book, Vayikra/Leviticus. Vayikra begins with a list of animal and grain sacrifices, which were the main method of reaching out to God in the biblical period. Tzav, the second parshah, continues along the same lines, adding information about vestments of the priesthood who officiated over the sacrificial system. Shemini includes instructions about which animals are permissible for consumption; this is a major source for the laws of kashrut. Tazriah addresses the cases of those who have suffered ritual impurity associated with birth and other life-threatening experiences. Metzora includes instructions about the treatment of one who has a skin affliction and their re-entry to the community. Aharei Mot describes the purification of the mishkan, the portable sanctuary in the wilderness years, and Kedoshim includes a number of laws prohibiting acts that the Torah deems as impairing the sanctity of the community. Parshat Emor elaborates on the laws concerning dealing with the dead and the Jewish calendar. Behar describes sacred times of the calendar, and Behukotai deals in part with the sabbatical year, in which the land of Israel lies fallow just as we rest every seventh day of the week. UPSTAIRS THOUGHTS RABBI’S REFLECTIONS “The Search for Sanctity” When we look at Vayikra as an integrated whole, we see that it lays out a series of topics that all relate to sanctity, kedushah in Hebrew. The Torah sees the sacrificial system, revolving around the altar, the priesthood, and tithing, as foundational to Judaism. The book’s concerns for that system are literarily and figuratively at the center of the Torah’s theology. It teaches us how to achieve sanctity through sacrifice, through the actions of the kohanim, through food, through time, and through acts of purification following physical impairment. Many of these laws fell into disuse following the destruction of the Temple in the first century, and our sages were forced to reorient Jewish life along the axis of holidays, ethics, and learning. Those elements were already present, of course, but in the absence of the central pillar of the sacrificial system, they took on an emphasis that they did not previous have. In many senses, the Judaism of today would be totally foreign to Jews who lived when the Jerusalem Temple was in operation. And in spite of the seemingly radical differences between biblical religion and our own Judaism, our connection to the Torah’s foundational ideas remains strong. Finding the sacred in life remains our faith’s central concern, and doing so in the realms of prayer, ritual, food, time, and purity continues to be our method. The details have changed, sometimes dramatically, but the hunger for meaning that we feel is as old as the text of the Torah and the rituals it describes. While our practices have changed, the values that informed those first rituals remain with us, binding us to one another and to God.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE IMPORTANT NOTICE BOARD POSITIONS NOW AVAILABLE

There are 2 positions available for at-large Board Members that expire June 30, 2015. Our constitution allows all members in good standing to be eligible for service on the Board of Directors. The Board has the authority for guiding many aspects of our Congregational life, some of those including oversight of our Professional Staff, budgeting, finance matters and establishment of policies related to Synagogue operations – all while serving as goodwill ambassadors to our greater community. Board Members are also required to serve as an active member of a standing committee, usher at services, and be an active participant in our synagogue’s programs.

DEBBIE KREISMAN DUBIN CONGREGATION BETH JUDEA E-mail: debdubin-cbj@hotmail.com

MISSION STATEMENT Congregation Beth Judea is a welcoming, egalitarian synagogue whose mission is to create a warm and inviting home that serves the lifelong spiritual, educational and fellowship needs of our members. Consistent with the principles of the Conservative Movement, we embrace Torah and our responsibility to serve and support the greater Jewish community, the community at large, the United States of America and the State of Israel.

The Word January 2015

Why become a Board Member? A fair question to ask – with perhaps rewards that you may never have expected to receive. This is an opportunity to give back to your community, explore a ‘personal stretch’ in being of service, sharing with other members of our vibrant organization, exploring other areas of interest that you may have never considered before or, perhaps, even a vision of adding to a larger role of leadership. Everyone has something to bring to the table – this is a unique opportunity for you to consider taking action on. Please, if you are interested, we ask that you simply answer the following questions to begin the process and assist the committee. Your response, via email to Debbie Kreisman Dubin at debdubincbj@hotmail.com must be submitted before Monday, January 5, 2015: 1. How long have you been a member of CBJ? 2. What, if any committees have you previously served on – or are presently serving? 3. Why do you have a desire to be of service as a member of the Board of Directors? 4. What areas of the synagogue are you most interested in? How would you envision participating in pursuing that interest? Sincerely, Debbie Kreisman Dubin President Debdubin-cbj@hotmail.co

VICE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE CBJ ISRAEL TRIP On October 22nd, fifty–two enthusiastic and apprehensive travelers left Chicago as participants in the CBJ Israel Trip. For approximately 75% of the group, this was their first trip to Eretz Israel, and their expectations and excitement level were high. Everyone arrived safely in the late afternoon of October 23rd. We had our first formal get together on the beach in Tel Aviv, where we meet our tour guides Jonathan Cutler and Bena Mantel from Touring Israel. Our guides would prove to be the catalyst for an amazing journey over the next ten days. Our journey began in Tel Aviv, as we got a historical perspective of the State of Israel. After our first day activities, we prepared for our first Shabbat in Israel. Many of us attended Friday evening and Saturday morning services at a communal Conservative congregation. We were made to feel welcome by the entire Congregation.

After four days in Tel Aviv, we headed north to Caesarea (location of King Herod’s palace), Haifa (Israel’s port city), and Akko, where there is an excavated Crusader fortress used by the British as a prison for Irgun and Haganah members. It was the subject of one of the scenes in the movie Exodus. After Akko we headed east to our overnight lodging in Kinneret. The next morning we awoke to a spectacular view of the Kinneret (Sea of Galilee). The highlights of the next two days were visits to the Golan Heights, where we could hear shelling on the Syrian border, and the City of Tzfat (Safed). Tzfat is a great place to shop for art work, but we were also treated to a very informative presentation on Kabbalah (mystical Jewish study). We then proceeded on our journey to Jerusalem, the soul of Israel. We traveled straight south, stopping at Ein Gedi, Masada, and the Dead Sea. Fourteen members of our group elected to climb Masada on the snake path. Everyone made it to the top. We were all proud of their accomplishment. After our final stop at the Dead Sea (plenty of mud to go around), we entered Jerusalem via Mt Scopus. Words cannot describe the city of Jerusalem and its significance to Jewish heritage. When we arrived at seven in the evening, it was cold and dark; however viewing the Old City brought a glow to everyone’s face. The highlight of my trip happened on our second day in Jerusalem. Our schedule included a visit to Yad Vashem , a tour of an Orthodox neighborhood, and Friday night services at the Kotel. It was raining all day with no apparent end. After Yad Vashem, it appeared the rest of our plans for the day would be cancelled. However, I remained hopeful the rain would stop. At 4:30 the rain did stop, and we headed to the southern excavation of the Kotel for Friday evening prayer. Praying as a group led by Rabbi Pivo was inspirational. Towards the end of our service, just as it started to drizzle, Rabbi lead us in the Yizkor prayer, recommending to all of us that we remember family and friends who never had the opportunity to travel to Israel. There were few dry eyes after our service. I would like to thank Rabbi Pivo for planting the idea of a trip to Israel three years ago, the Israel trip planning Ed Hockfield, Cathy Feiger, Steve Frost, and Steve Peck for all their efforts in planning our experience, and especially my 51 fellow travelers who made this one of my most memorable trips. We left Chicago as just acquaintances, but returned as close friends. I hope everyone will consider visiting our Jewish Homeland sometime in the future. Our Congregation will be planning a Family trip for December 2016.

RESUMES ON FEBRUARY 2 – MARCH 23, 2015 Tuesday mornings after minyan (8:10 – 8:30 am) Linger after morning minyan for a light breakfast and a bit of Torah, as we spend a few minutes together looking at the weekly parshah with Rabbi Pivo. Judaism 201: `What’s Bugging Rashi?’ (Rabbi Pivo) Tuesday Evenings at 8:00 pm begins Nov. 4, 2014 -May For nearly a thousand years, Jews have understood the Torah through the eyes of Rabbi Shlomo Yitzhaki, or Rashi. His commentary has been the indispensable source for beginners and expert students alike to understand Torah. Rashi’s brief, clear comments are the best starting point for an in-depth study of our most vital texts. The course is open to all but with advanced students in mind; we will use the Hebrew text as much as possible. Kohelet & Song of Songs Sweet Taste of Torah Wednesday evenings at 8 pm For thousands of years, Judaism has been interpreting and applying the Torah to everyday life. This class follows the Tanach cycle. Each week we will read through several chapters a week of the Nevim (Prophets) texts, then on to Ketuvim (Writings), then back to Torah again. Parsha Perspectives Thursday evenings after minyan (7:45—8:00 pm) Do you have 10 minutes to spare? It only takes 10 minutes to get started on a lifelong journey. Spend each Thursday after Minyan learning about the upcoming Parsha with Rabbi Pivo, and before you know it you'll have completed hours of Torah study. Parsha of the Week Shabbat Torah/Haftarah Study Shabbat morning at 9 am Join a study/discussion of the week’s parsha. We will discuss questions raised by the participants.

MEN’S CLUB The New Year marks the beginning of a new season of exciting Men’s Club programs and events. Last month we announced that our Men's Club Man of the Year is Ron Friedman. This month we are happy to announce that Larry Bender has been chosen as our 2015 Men's Club Youth of the Year. Larry is a student at Chicagoland Jewish High School. He has served in leadership roles at both the local and national levels. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors at Congregation Beth Judea and is the youngest person to have served in this position. The Midwest Region Man of the Year/Youth of the Year Dinner will be held on Sunday February 22, 2015 at Beth Hillel Congregation Bnai Emunah in Wilmette, IL from 5 PM until 8 PM. You can show your support for each honoree by purchasing an advertisement in the ad book for the program. If you would like to attend the celebration dinner to honor Ron and Larry, please make a reservation. Please see the link to instructions for purchasing an ad or making a reservation at the end of this article. A signature program of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs is scheduled for Super Bowl Sunday, February 1, 2015. The World Wide Wrap focuses on a Jewish ritual that spans the ages and generations. We bind up, engage and learn about the unique Jewish ritual of putting on tefillin. The program begins at 8:30 PM and is led by Norm Kurtz and Orin Rotman. Last month the Hebrew Literacy class graduated one of its largest classes in recent memory. Eleven students took the 12-week course designed to teach adults to quickly develop a proficiency in reading prayer book Hebrew. The goal of the class was geared towards the traditional Friday night service. The graduates worked very hard to achieve this goal. On Friday December 12, 2014 the students help lead Friday night services. It was a wonderful evening, and the students performed exceptionally well. Yasher Koach to all of the students! On February 7 -8, 2015 Men’s Club has planned a post Shabbat retreat at the Geneva Ridge Resort in Lake Geneva, WI. There will be lots of camaraderie and fun with learning, fitness, and ritual activities planned. Three complete meals including dinner, breakfast and lunch (dairy/pareve) are included. A hospitality suite with snacks and beverages of all types will be available. Interest in the retreat has been great, and as of this writing almost twenty men have signed up. The absolute last day to sign up is January 2, 2015. If you want to attend please call either Ron Friedman or Norm Kurtz NOW! One of the most important things Congregation Beth Judea’s Men’s Club participates in is volunteering at the Lieberman Center Home in Skokie every fourth Shabbat morning. Men’s Club members ( as well as any one else interested in helping others) assist the residents to and from services and assist as needed during the Shabbat service. This is a very rewarding experience. The program began in 2008. Four clubs from the Midwest region rotate attendance for this program. Congregation Beth Judea’s Men’s Club is scheduled to assist at Shabbat morning services on January 24 at the Lieberman Home. We ask that you arrive by 9:30 AM. Please contact Jerry Sakol or Ron Friedman if you plan to attend or have any questions. Men’s Club wishes you and your family a healthy and happy 2015! Eric Yegelwel

RON FRIEDMAN Ron Friedman is Congregation Beth Judea’s 2015 Men’s Club Man of the Year. He is has been married for forty-five years to his beautiful, wonderful, and understanding wife Jean. Ron is the proud father of four daughters and one granddaughter. He is happily retired after a long commercial banking career. Ron now spends his free time reading, working out, summer gardening, and completing “honey do” chores. Before moving to Buffalo Grove from Skokie in 1987, he served 8.5 years on District 68 School Board, including one term as Board President. Ron and Jean joined Congregation Beth Judea 26 years ago.. Ron currently serves on the synagogue Finance Committee. Recently he has become more active in the Men’s Club. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Men’s Club and is instrumental in coordinating Congregation Beth Judea’s Men’s Club participation in assisting the residents at the Lieberman Center on Shabbat. Ron has found his experience with Men’s Club to be immensely enriching due to the “menschlichkeit” generated by a truly wonderful group of men. He would like to give a special shout out to those in the group (who modestly prefer anonymity) whose leadership and traits of charity, spirituality, and morality have been inspirations for him to emulate. Ron is both honored and humbled to have been chosen for this award and hopes he can live up to the high standards set by his predecessors. LARRY BENDER Larry Bender is Congregation Beth Judea’s Men’s Club 2015 Youth of the Year. Larry is currently a senior at Chicagoland Jewish High School. He has been very active in Beth Judea’s award winning USY chapter serving as co-editor of the Chapter newsletter and Vice President of Communications. More recently, Larry has assumed regional leadership roles as co-chair of the Fall USY Convention and Regional Vice President of Communications. He has also participated in USY on Wheels Mission Mitzvah and the USY Pilgrimage to Israel. In addition to USY activities, Larry has been a strong supporter and advocate for Israel. He is active in StandWithUs having worked with them as a teen intern. He has attended both the 2013 AIPAC High School Summit held in Washington, D.C. in 2013 and the AIPAC Policy Conference also held in Washington, D.C. in 2014. Sports are Larry’s other passion. He has played for both the baseball and the bowling teams for Chicagoland Jewish High School for the past three years. He has also worked as a baseball umpire for several years. He was selected to receive the Best Umpire Award in 2009. Currently, Larry is the youngest member to have ever served on the Congregation Beth Judea Board of Directors. He is a member of the Education, Ritual, Membership and Israel committees. After graduation, Larry plans to spend a year is Israel attending NATIV which will provide him a unique opportunity to continue his journey to becoming an adult Conservative Jewish leader of tomorrow.

LIFE IN ISRAEL – THE GOODMAN’S BLOG Howie and Suzanne Goodman were valued members at Beth Judea until they decided to make aliyah in 2009. The Goodmans have agreed to provide us with a blog on their experiences as new olim in Israel. Though we continue to miss the Goodmans, we can all look forward to reading about their adventures in Israel through the blog. In this issue, they give us an update on the wounding of “Aron,” their latest tiyul (day trip), and the Hula Valley. “We feel it is important to follow up on our last newsletter about the grandson of our Rabbi Emeritus who was seriously wounded near the Egyptian Border”...Click here to share their experience.

SHALVA “Its okay, the children aren’t affected” But what if you knew they were?

Shalva clients will often say that they can withstand their husband’s abuse as long as he never directs his anger toward their children. What many women don’t understand is that children are the silent victims of abuse and that they often repeat the behaviors they have seen. According to a recent study, over 90% of children are aware of domestic abuse in their home. These children are affected emotionally, cognitively, and physically. They are at great risk and often experience low self-esteem, shame, fear and guilt. Many distrust adults, fail to thrive or suffer from depression and anxiety. What can we do? The issue of domestic abuse is not just a women’s issue; it affects the entire family as well as our Jewish community. SHALVA offers free counseling to Jewish women who are or were in an intimate partner relationship. If you or someone you know needs our help, call 773-583-4673.

WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records.

We firmly believe that reaching out to others benefits not only the recipient, but the person providing help as well. This is, without a doubt, a win-win situation for all involved. If you are interested in making a difference, please contact one of the Hesed (Caring) committee members below:
