Israel Committee Movie Night THE ISRAEL COMMITTEE INVITES YOU TO JOIN US SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2020 – 7:00 P.M. FOR MOVIE NIGHT AS WE PRESENT

“The Shabbos Goy” God literally forbids she turn off a vibrator gone rogue, so an Orthodox Jew sets out on a quest to find someone who can. Executive Producer Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat) presents this award-winning short film written and directed by Talia Osteen. Audience Award (Best Short Film) | Florida Film Festival; USA, 2019; Comedy; English; 7 minutes

“ETGAR KERET: Based on a True Story” People from all over the world have come to love Israeli writer Etgar Keret for his surreal short stories and his hilarious live performances. As The Guardian wrote: “Spending time with him is like entering the world of his stories: suddenly, everything seems slightly off-kilter, full of comic potential.” Both Keret’s short stories and the anecdotes from his own life share the fact that they are very relatable despite their incredible absurdities. How did Keret become such an amazing storyteller? When two young Dutch filmmakers set out to make a film about Etgar Keret’s stories, they knew they had to make use of a lot of different techniques to truly show how his mind works. Through animations of his stories, re-enactments of his anecdotes, peeks behind the scenes, and interviews with family and friends (Jonathan Safran Foer and Ira Glass among them) in Tel Aviv and New York, they try to find out why Keret’s constant storytelling has kept him alive.

A Film by Stephane Kaas & Rutger Lemm (see trailer here) Netherlands / Israel, 2017; Documentary, Music and Arts; English, Hebrew; 54 minutes.

HESED COMMITTEE Dear Congregants, We hope you and your families are doing well during the quarantine.

As the virus numbers in the state are beginning to rise again, it is important that we recognize that many of our congregants are feeling more isolated than ever. Perhaps you know of members who would benefit from ongoing contact from a caring congregant or perhaps you wish for this outreach. If so, please let us know, and we will have a volunteer contact you on a regular basis. We cannot do this, however, unless you let us know. Please let us help you if you- or someone you know- need it! We don’t want you to feel alone. We continue to reach out to congregants to mark happy milestones, such as birthdays and anniversaries. We want you to know you are being thought of during these happy occasions. If you would like to help make these calls, please contact Marilyn or Evan.

If you need assistance with technology to participate in the synagogue offerings or if you need a cloth mask, please let us know! Finally, we would like to welcome all the new members to our Beth Judea family. Thank you for recognizing CBJ as a warm and welcoming community. While we cannot congregate in person, there are many opportunities for you to become involved. If joining our committee is enticing, please call or mail us. Our email address is listed below. If you would be interested in helping us in the future or have suggestions on how to best meet the needs of congregants, please contact us at hesed.cbj@gmail.com. We wish each of you the best. Please stay safe and use all reasonable precautions to remain healthy. We are one family and need to take care of each other. Evan Rumack Marilyn Green-Rebnord

Young Families

Gabriel Edward Shapiro will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, November 21, 2020. Gabe is a 7th grader at Woodlawn Middle School in Long Grove. He is extremely passionate about baseball and is a member of the D1 Prime travel baseball organization, where he primarily plays 2nd and 3rd base. Gabe also enjoys playing basketball and just hanging out with his friends and his dog Milo. Gabe will be celebrating this special day with his parents Kimberly and Steven Shapiro, his siblings Jacob and Sophia, his grandmother Judy Silman, and several close family friends. Although this celebration will not be like anything we imagined, we feel blessed that many additional family members and friends will be able to join us virtually to share in Gabe’s simcha. Gabe and his parents would like to give special thanks to Kim Abern for her tutoring, support, and friendship which have assisted Gabe in reaching this milestone. We would also like to thank Anna Besser, whose support and guidance during these unexpected times have been so helpful. And finally, many thanks to all of Gabe’s Beth Judea Hebrew School teachers throughout the years and to Rabbi Zimbalist for his spiritual leadership and guidance.

A Hearty Mazel Tov to all our B’nei Mitzvah Families

from your Beth Judea Family.

WAYS & MEANS

CBJ Business Directory Advertising Opportunity

The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws.

Religious Education

Embracing Our New Norm through Middot

Anna Besser Education Director

As we continue to embrace our new reality of virtual learning, social distancing, and only gathering with those in our social bubble, we have found ways to remain calm in the midst of the madness/chaos all around us. No matter how organized we are or how much we prepare, things happen. Madness is craziness, foolishness, and sometimes frenzy. In today’s time we just have to embrace it and find new ways to make it through. The middot below remind us what we should focus on.

Middah: Calmness “He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.” - Proverbs 16:32 Remaining calm and ultimately believing that everything will turn out for the better is essential. You are going to get there either way; being crazy in the moment or remaining calm. Remaining calm always achieves results more quickly. Middah: Patience “You can train yourself to be patient. You can train yourself to open the space between the match and the fuse.” - Rabbi Yechiel Yitzchok Perr Sometimes people do things in different ways and in their own timing. The thing to realize is that your timing might not be the same as your child’s or spouse’s timing. Set reasonable goals of what needs to get done and then work together to create a plan that everyone feels comfortable following. Middah: Joy “Delight and joy must accompany your every [spiritual] endeavor. Only when you delight and rejoice in each fine and positive deed will you have the enthusiasm to act in the most ideal manner and add to your deeds every day. Only when the delight and joy in your heart are bound to your fine and positive actions will they be anchored in you.” - Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook Experience the Simplicity of Simple Joys, Taking Joyful Pictures: Sometimes we get stuck in a negative loop about quarantine and the coronavirus. Now is the time to take advantage of all the possibilities for happiness that lie just within their reach. Here are some examples: • Food: There are a lot of recipes for complex, delicious foods—recipes you’d never normally have enough time to make. Now you do have the time. Post pictures to celebrate the experience. • Pets: Go for a walk with them, dress them up, or just enjoy their company. Snap a quick pic with your pet. • Family: Did you go see a relative? Try captioning the picture of them like this: “Great to see Grandma Rose—even from six feet away!” • Not into capturing these photos, then find a meme that gives you the giggles. Post it with a caption reminding everyone how important laughter is.

Sisterhood Thank you to Rabbi and Hazzan for the beautiful High Holiday services. Though we miss all being together in our synagogue, they were beautiful and meaningful. An additional thank you to all of those who were behind the scenes. We know it was no small feat to make it look so effortless. Welcome to all our Chaver members! We are excited to have you join or rejoin our shul family. At our Sisterhood membership event, we talked about silver linings. One such silver lining is welcoming Elizabeth Ladin-Gross back to an active role in Sisterhood. Several years ago, she moved to North Carolina and we only saw her a couple of times a year. She has very graciously volunteered to help with virtual programing. Thank you, Elizabeth! Speaking of virtual programming, we have some great events coming up. Nov 16th @ 6:30pm Michele will be leading a Zentangle program. It is organized doodling, and it is open to all synagogue members. All that is needed is paper, pen, and a relaxed attitude. Dec 16th @ 8pm is our Hanukkah Judaic Arts event. We will be quilling a dreidel. Because supplies are required, we need RSVPs by Nov 4th. Please see the flyer for the details. This is another great program to do at home with your kids and is open to whomever wants to join the fun. One kit of supplies is required for each person participating. Jan 11th is scheduled to be our Vashti Night. Details will follow as we adjust it to be a virtual event. Feb 20th will be our Sisterhood Shabbat. Darlene Bikshorn is looking for women to take an active part in the service. If you are interested, please reach out. Please see the flyers for the details to our events. As we transition into winter and staying indoors, are you interested in helping Project Linus? They are always looking for blankets for children in need. They can be knitted, crocheted, or even fleece tie blankets. You can make an entire blanket or part of one. Kitty Hoffman has all the information and has set up a Nov 4th @ 8pm meeting to discuss. Please see the weekly email for the zoom details. Due to our current situation this winter may feel longer than normal. Take the time to reach out to each other and connect. Do the things that bring you peace and comfort. Take care of others and yourself. Debbie Limer Debs825@datamanagerinc.com Michele Sussman CBJsisterhoodpresident@gmail.com Sisterhood Co-presidents

Men’s Club Greetings from the Men’s Club. I hope that your holidays were meaningful. I know mine were albeit, for the millionth time, different. I wanted to start my article this month by thanking everyone who helped make the High Holidays at CBJ incredibly special. To Rabbi Zimbalist, Hazzan Weisberg, Lisa Neiman, Dana Goldstein, Arnie Bender, Bruce Darin, Norm Kurtz, and everyone who helped put together the various services we had, thank you for bringing a sense of community to what could have been a very lonely time. Hopefully, next year we can all be together celebrating in person at the synagogue. Next, a big thank you goes to Ron Friedman for taking the lead this year on Project Isaiah. He worked with The Ark to make the arrangements to get the pod and schedule everyone who volunteered to help take the donations. As I think you know, this is a project that Men’s Club has been involved with for many years and, even with a pandemic, we did not want to skip. I also want to thank the people who volunteered to help work to take the donations including Steve Limer, Orin Rotman, Sandy Victor, Evan Rumack, Norm Kurtz, Alan Marcus, Sandy Ramras (z”l), Alan Friedlander, and me. Finally, I want to thank everyone who donated to this worthy cause. We should all be very proud of the mitzvah we performed in helping those in need - especially during this time. While we didn’t fill the entire pod, it nonetheless was pretty full. Ya’asher kochahem to all. In keeping with the holiday theme of this article, I next want to give a big thank you to Sandy Victor for all of the hard work he put in to make our drive-thru Sukkah a huge success. I happened to be at the Talmud class when this idea was first discussed and, at that time, I think everyone thought it was very funny. Fast forward a year later and it was reality. Sandy not only came up with the design but also made all the arrangements to get the materials needed to build it. Besides

The Word – November 2020

Sandy, thank you to Evan Rumack, Jerry Sakol, Carl Weiss, Eric Yegelwel, Daniel Landau, Aubrey Landau, Ron Friedman, Orin Rotman, Bruce Darin, Lisa Neiman, Norm Kurtz, Manny Ribot, Marilyn Victor, Arnie Bender, David Stolman, Michael Klass, Cindy Lipka, Al Gimpel, Trudy Balogh, Daniel Balogh, Sandy Levitt, Brandt Rosen, and Sia Rosen for your help to build it and man it during the holiday. Not only did we have many congregants and their families stop by, but we also had a random person who saw it while driving by and decided to fulfill the mitzvah of being in a Sukkah. How cool is that! Our next Tap the Torah is Wednesday, November 4 at 8:00 PM. Norm Kurtz and Orin Rotman will be discussing the topic of “Heneini/Henneni: Whose Got the Ball? What’s Next?” This sounds like a very interesting discussion, and I encourage all of you to attend. Click here for flyer and details. On Sunday, November 8, we will be “packing” Hanukkah candles for delivery. While we will not be able to be in the synagogue as we usually are, you can stop by and pick up a route and all the supplies. Click here for flyer and details. Tuesday, November 17, we will be having Dr. Michael Greenberg speak to us on his book Tables Turned on Them – Jews Guarding Nazi POWs Held in the United States. This is an event that was originally scheduled for Yom Ha Shoah but had to be postponed. The event will be streamed via Zoom, so keep an eye out for more details and a link. Dr. Greenberg has spoken on this topic throughout the country and presented at the 2019 FJMC International Convention in Toronto. Please put it on your calendar. As of this writing Jerry Sakol and Daniel Landau are preparing to teach our Hebrew Literacy class. Hebrew Literacy 1 is designed to teach those with no previous (or forgotten) knowledge of Hebrew how to read. The 12-week course focuses on learning to read the words used in the Friday Night service. The class is held on Tuesday evenings

Men’s Club from October 27, 2020 – January 26, 2021 with graduation on Friday evening, January 30, 2021. If you are interested, please contact the Shul. Finally, it is with great sadness that I have to write about our friend Sandy Ramras, who passed away on the evening of October 10, 2020. Sandy was a very active member of the Men’s Club and the synagogue. He was our liaison for the Lieberman Program. For those of you not familiar with this, pre-pandemic, once a month members of the Men’s Club volunteer to help at Lieberman Center in Skokie helping those residents who wish to partake in Shabbat Services get to the Beit Midrash. This was a passion of his as well as a mitzvah. He also was becoming a “regular” at services and the many adult education programs that CBJ offered. While he was a quiet person by nature, you could always count on him for a smile or an interesting question or comment. He also was a big help when we would pack candles for Hanukkah or Yom Ha Shoah. I think the last event he volunteered for was helping collect items for Project Isaiah. Sandy, you will be missed more than you know but, you are now with your love Ina, and in a better place. We thank you for your friendship and everything you gave to us. I know that you are looking down on us and smiling. May your memory be for a blessing and rest in peace. You will always be in our hearts.

Men’s Club strives to offer something for everyone. As such, we’re always open to new and creative programming ideas that help Jewish men lead rich and filling Jewish Lives.

INTERFAITH COUNCIL

News from the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council by Joanne Dicker, President

As we enter into this Thanksgiving season, what are you thankful for? I am thankful that I still have hope. “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of the things, and no good thing ever dies." (Shawshank Redemption) “Hope” has sustained me through the months: hope that my family and friends remain healthy; hope that I will be able to hug and kiss those I love; hope that a cure or vaccine will be developed sooner rather than later; hope that our country, so divided, shall come together again and hope that we once again remember that we are bound together as citizens, neighbors, and friends not divided by colors of red, blue, white, black. This year, our Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration will take place in the virtual world- on Sunday, November 22, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. Our theme is “Hope: a call for action.” Clergy and members from all of our ten synagogues and churches will be participating in this unique change of venue. (Yes, we will still celebrate in song and verse.) Join us in sharing and transmitting hope this Thanksgiving season. Watch for future mailings containing the link to the Celebration. Please also remember those who are less fortunate. The Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council helps support four food pantries of our member congregations located at Congregation Beth Am, Kingswood Methodist Church, St. Alphonsus, and St. Mary Parish. Your monetary donations are always welcome but especially needed at this time of year. I am also attaching a flier of requested non-perishable foods and dry goods should you wish to purchase and drop off at the food pantries directly. If you need assistance, I am also attaching contact information for our food and local pantries. The Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council proudly serves this community. If you have any programming suggestions, please forward them to me or your IFC representatives.
