Rabbi’s Reflections THE MEANING OF MATZAH Pesakh is the most important holiday in the Torah. Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur are mentioned briefly (though not by those names), the other harvest festivals Sukkot and Shavuot are discussed, but nothing really compares with the amount of attention Pesakh receives. The reason is obvious: Pesakh recalls our flight from Mitzrayim, our transformation from a slave people to a

Rabbi Jeff Pivo

free nation, one that was on its way to living a sanctified life in a sacred land. What Pesakh shares with other Jewish holidays is the ritualization of its themes through food, and the food that represents Pesakh is matzah. For eight days, we refrain from eating leavened bread, typically the most basic of foods, and instead eat unleavened matzah. This dramatic shift in what we eat is a constant reminder of what is missing from our diet during Pesakh: hametz (leaven). In fact, the removal of hametz is so central to the experience of Pesakh that we work for days or weeks prior to the holiday to clean our homes of it, sell any hametz that remains in our possession, ritually search for and then burn some of it just prior to Pesakh and, finally, maintain our homes as non-hametz zones for the rest of the week. It takes a great deal of effort to fulfill that level of commitment to Jewish law, but most Jews make that effort. It is critical that we remember why we do, so that we don’t become enslaved to the very rituals that commemorate our freedom. There are two main reasons for our zeal in removing hametz from our diets during Pesakh. First, we do so as a remembrance of the haste with which our ancestors fled Mitzrayim. I don’t know how many Israelites were awake and just getting started baking bread in the middle of the

The Word – April 2017

night when the final plague hit Mitzrayim, but the symbol of haste is the key to our practice: They fled more quickly than the time it would take for bread to rise. Escape from slavery does not come easily or without danger; when it comes, we need to be ready to go at a moment’s notice. By avoiding all hametz during Pesakh, we remember the speed of our delivery

that night and the precariousness of the entire endeavor; had they not fled immediately, we might not now be Jews. The second reason for the fervor our hametz removal is the symbol of purging ourselves of any impurities that accompany us when we are redeemed from slavery, whether the actual bonds of slavery in Mitzrayim or the psychological bonds of addiction, character flaws, unhealthy relationships, and the like. Making a clean break from the past means leaving behind even the smallest hint of what had enslaved us, symbolized by omitting even the smallest particle of hametz in our diets and in our homes. The meaning of matzah is found not in what it is but in what it lacks. We avoid hametz for eight days to remember the speed of the escape from slavery, of taking the opportunity to liberate ourselves while we can, and to attempt to leave behind those remnants of our slavery which may still cling to us. We eat matzah to remember their liberation and our own. Hag kasher v’same’akh,

Hazzan’s Happenings FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION

HAZZAN ROGER WEISBERG

If we are entering April, we know that we’re busily preparing for Passover. One of the happiest and most meaningful holidays in the Jewish calendar, much of the time at the seder table is spent looking back to and retelling the story of the early generations of our people. At the end of our eight-day celebration, we recite the Yizkor prayers, this time looking back to more recent generations. And before April comes to an end, we also observe Yom HaShoah, in which we remember the six million who perished in the Holocaust.

But we have also entered Springtime, with the promise of warmer, longer, happier days which lie ahead. Perhaps appropriately, then, I found myself thinking about these next generations of Jewish souls, our children and grandchildren, to whom we are entrusting the Jewish continuity. It is always fulfilling to see our kids in the synagogue, and we do take pride in our B’nei Mitzvah students, our Confirmation students, our religious school, the younger children who come with their families to celebrate Shabbat or Purim or other occasions. Several weeks ago, I was delighted to open the 2017 issue of the JUF’s “Guide to Jewish Living in Chicago.” In it, on page 16, a saw one of Beth Judea’s high school students, Carly Colen, spotlighted as a “Budding Philanthropist.” Carly has been very actively pursuing mitzvot through JUF’s Voices: The Chicago Jewish Teen Foundation. She has learned the fundamentals of Jewish philanthropy and grantmaking and has been busy helping to secure funding for the organizations applying for grants. She has worked with Uptown Café and Camp TOV, where she has served at soup kitchens, a task which Carly finds particularly rewarding. It’s so great to see that many of our children are making the performance of mitzvot a part of their daily lives, just as we would hope. Indeed, we have many reasons to be proud as we watch them take their place in the adult Jewish community. May our young people continue to find ways in which to strengthen Judaism in the years ahead. Thus we can continue to pray each day, L’dor Vador, from generation to generation. Wishing for you and yours a chag kasher v’same’ach – a kosher and very joyous Pesakh!

See you in shul, Hazzan Roger Weisberg

Yom HaShoah MEN’S CLUB To the Beth Judea Community: Each year our Men’s Club provides our families with yellow candles to light in memory of the victims of the Shoah (the Holocaust). The six million Jews who were murdered in the Shoah lost their lives for no other reason than their ! identity as Jews. It made no difference to the Nazis whether their victims were religious or secular, ritually observant, knowledgeable in Jewish texts and practices or completely estranged from them. In their mania to rid Europe of its Jews they cast a broad net. The memory, lessons, and magnitude of the Holocaust inconceivably continue to fade away and are even denied by some as having occurred. We commemorate this meaningful, historic occasion with the Federation of Jewish Men's Clubs Yellow Candle Program.

The lighting of a memorial candle for the dead is a long held Jewish tradition. We ask that you light the candles on the evening of April 23 and join us on Monday evening, April 24 for the Community Yom Hashoah service at Temple Chai at 7:00 pm (click here for details). This is a vital, important, and symbolic way to show our solidarity and resolve that we will never forget! If you would like to make a contribution to offset the cost of providing these candles, I strongly encourage it. One of the functions of a synagogue is to make it possible to remember our shared tragedies. By lighting the yellow candle, we remind ourselves that evil was not limited to the Shoah, and that we commit ourselves to preserving its memory as a caution against future evil.

Sunshine Fund The primary purpose of the Shiva tradition, or "sitting Shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong Shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the Shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws. Historically, the Board of Directors of Congregation Beth Judea sent Shiva baskets to the immediate family of Board members; parents, spouses, siblings and G-d forbid children. We would like to extend this gesture to the entire congregation.

Religious Education #BlogExodus

Anna Besser Education Director

Rabbi Phyllis Sommer has for many years invited people to "Blog Exodus" at this time of year. Basically, she chooses a theme a day for the 14 days leading up to the Seder, and invites us all to write on that theme. #BlogExodus is really what you want to make of it. Each day a new topic can be reflected upon – write a blog post, tweet or post on Facebook. #BlogExodus provides an opportunity for us to prepare ourselves for Pesakh! While this picture is from last year’s post, we look forward to seeing the new version for 5777.

Let’s take a moment and reflect on one of the topics – Examine. In several weeks we will clean our homes of all chametz. We examine all our nooks and crannies to search out the very last of the chametz. We examine store shelves, searching all the items we need to prepare the numerous Passover meals for the week. We examine inward as well. The time leading up to Pesakh provides an opportunity to find the chametz that is inside of us – what holds us back from reaching our path to freedom? What do we need to do to deal with the roadblocks? Some we can handle on our own, while others are too big and require additional help.

We carry our chametz with us. The forty years of wandering was God's attempt to get the chametz of actual slavery – and the fantasy that somehow Egypt was better than the reality of freedom – out of our heads. This year, let’s find your own chametz - the kind that is inside you. And get rid of it. Sisterhood I want to share a small segment from our recent Sisterhood Seder “My Fair Seder’ and hope that as you sit around your table with family and friends, you take time to really listen. The story of Passover and freedom is so relevant today as we see so many places around the world and here at home in turmoil. The words below can open the door to a much broader discussion of who isn’t being heard and how we can help. Listen, and I believe it will help us focus on the wisdom, strength, and caring that is within each of us. Let’s use the Seder to learn the traditions of our past and make them meaningful for our future. The Sounds of Conscience Each person in sequence reads a line, with everyone reading the italicized response in unison.

Judaism begins with the commandment "Hear O Israel." [All:] But what does it really mean to hear? The person who attends a concert thinking only of work, Hears, but does not really hear. The person who walks among the songs of birds and thinks only of noisy city streets, Hears, but does not really hear. The person who listens to the words of family or friends and does not catch the note of urgency: “Notice me, help me, care about me.” Hears, but does not really hear. The person who listens to the news and thinks only of how it will affect the stock market, Hears, but does not really hear. The person who stifles the sounds of conscience and says enough has been done, Hears, but does not really hear. And so, may we listen to and hear the music of the world, the infant’s cry and the lover’s sigh. May we hear the call for help from the lonely among us and the sound of the breaking heart. May we hear the words of our friends and also their unspoken dreams. May we hear within ourselves the yearnings that are struggling to be expressed. May we hear each other. For only if we do, will we have the right to hope that anyone will hear us. Take advantage of the many opportunities to enrich your Seder by referring to any of the Rabbis, educators and poet credited with developing My Fair Seder. CREDITS - Sections and selections in this haggadah are based on: A Growing Haggadah, Mark Hurvitz ; A Survivors’ Haggadah, Munich Germany 1946; Ira Steinroot, quoted in A Different Night, Noam Zion and David Dishon; My Father's Paradise: A Son's Search for His Family's Past, Ariel Sabar New Prayers for the High Holy Days, Rabbis Harold Kushner and Jack Reimer; Ephod Bad: Paradox of Providence, Rabbi Benjamin Rabinowitz (Warsaw, 1872), paraphrased by Rabbi Mark Greenspan (Oceanside, NY, 2007)) Next Year in Lhasa, a Seder for Tibet; The Art of Blessing the Day, Marge Piercy; The Journey Continues: The Ma’yan Passover Haggadah, Tamara Cohen; Torah Guidelines For Living Like A Mensch, Rabbi Sidney Greenberg

Men’s Club Ladies and Gentlemen of Beth Judea, This month promises to be very interesting. This coming Thursday is our next Men’s Club board meeting, and the following evening we are having a Shirat Shabbat where Hazzan and several musicians (including yours truly, Bill Levitan, Scott Eisner, Andy Zarchy, Sandy Moses, and Andy Seigel) play and sing many different and compelling tunes to the Shabbat service. We are growing in popularity, as can be seen by increasing attendance. It is our hope to instill ruach in your Shabbat experience. Please join us! Our first Seder is on the tenth, and I would like to wish everyone a wonderful holiday. This is my favorite holiday. I have heard it is the most commonly observed of all the hollidays we have. It is interesting to note in this modern time that there are still people literally being enslaved. And it was not so long ago that a great many of our people were enslaved in Europe. Please enjoy your holiday responsibly. April 15th is our Men’s Club Shabbat, deftly managed by our current Man of the Year Lou Rabin. I encourage everyone to attend. There will be a healthy handful of hearty and holy

hymns happily harmonized here. Please help harken to hear for a hardly heard and wholly heartfelt Hallelujah. This coming April 23rd, at sundown we light our Yom Hashoah candles. As we commemorate this particularly poignant event I hope all of us at Beth Judea will observe this solemn remembrance. Your Men’s Club is providing every member whom we can reach with a candle, all hand delivered by Men’s Club and other dedicated fellow members. Our honored fellow member, commonly known as Captain Ruach, is at this time quite ill. Please be sure to keep him in your prayers and contact list to wish him a full and speedy recovery. In closing, I would like to wish everyone a fine month as our snowbirds begin to come back home. We welcome them back and hope they won’t go aflauntin’ their tans too much. Zei gezundt everyone, be well, and I’ll see you in shul.

Interfaith News from the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council By Jay Jayapalan, President Hello everyone. As I take on this role as the new President for the Interfaith Council, many thoughts come to mind, but primarily I am looking forward to serving the council toward our purpose as listed below.   

To foster understanding and unity among those of different faiths by means of open dialogue, discussion, and fellowship. To encourage cooperative service efforts in identifying, addressing, and meeting some of the agreed upon “social needs” in our collective areas. To serve as an ethical and moral voice when issues surface which affect the positive growth and unity of our community

I am up for the challenges ahead and look to all of you for support. Although I have served in this role before, the council is quite different than it was six years ago. We have more active members, more events, and many more member congregations. I am thankful for this growth due to the efforts of all participants and leaders and thankful to God for providing these results for our labor. It is hard to imagine our community without the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council. Here are some upcoming events you wouldn’t want to miss. Monday, May 15, 7:00 pm: “Know your Neighbor’s Religion: Judaism” Our local clergy will be speaking on the Conservative, Reform and Reconstructionist movements at Shir Hadash Synagogue,200 W. Dundee Road, Wheeling, IL 60090 Monday, May 22, 7:00 pm “Know your Neighbor’s Religion: Christianity” Our local clergy will be speaking on the Catholic, Lutheran and Methodist traditions at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1111 N Elmhurst Road, Prospect Heights, IL 60070 Sunday, June 25, 2017: Fourth annual “i-WALK” to feed the hungry. July 30-August 3rd (Sunday to Thursday), will be our 4th Annual Interfaith Service Trip. This year, we will be going to the Greater St. Louis area to help with flood recovery. This area suffered from a massive flash flood in December of 2015. The inhabitants are still recovering, and their federal grant expires in November. Please mark your calendars and join us in this worthy endeavor. All skill levels are welcome. For more information go to: www.interfaithservice.blogspot.com. Registration is open now. Please check this location for fliers on upcoming events. For more information on any of our programs, please contact us by e-mail or telephone: nwsinterfaith@gmail.com, 224-699-0386 or visit our website at: http://www.northwestsuburbaninterfaith.org or your council representatives: Joanne Dicker: joannedicker@comcast.net (Beth Judea) Helene Fox: helene125125@gmail.com (Beth Judea) Donations may also be made directly to:
