Facilities Update You may have noticed a number of changes, upgrades and updates that the Facilities Committee has authorized to be made to the Synagogue building and surrounding grounds. Some of these changes related to increasing the security of the building and the safety of our congregants. Last year the Jewish Federation (JUF) began a program to help subsidize security related upgrades for Jewish institutions. CBJ participated in JUF’s program and was generously granted significant monies that were used in upgrading and updating the following in and around the Synagogue:

New Entryway Doors Automatic Door openers Security shatter resistant films placed on outside doors and windows Installation of new enhanced visibility LED lighting in the parking lot Security Cameras focusing on the outside of the building We at CBJ are grateful for JUF’s assistance in keeping the congregation safe. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to the Facilities Committee. Better yet, please join us as we meet at CBJ at 8 pm on the first Wednesday of the month.

Gardners Wanted As we continue the celebration of our 50th Anniversary, and as we eagerly anticipated spring, we are seeking all who are interested in beautifying the grounds in and around CBJ and including more color. The Facilities Committee is looking for people interested in updating/revising the landscaping around the Synagogue. There are many plantable areas that remain under utilized. This is an opportunity to enhance the appearance of CBJ to the Community as a whole. If you’re interested in helping in the effort, please contact Herb Finn (HerbCBJ@gmail.com) or Lisa Neiman at the Synagogue.

CBJ 50th ANNIVERSARY EVENTS A 50th ANNIVERSARY MESSAGE On April 29th, 2018 Beth Judea will celebrate its 50th Anniversary. This anniversary year gives us an opportunity to look back into our history from our start at the Kingsbury Methodist Church to the 500 plus family Conservative Jewish community we are today. Over the past 50 years, with the hard work of our professional staff and lay leaders, we have become a strong Conservative synagogue. To me, Beth Judea is so much more than just a place of worship. It is a Jewish community where we learn, socialize, celebrate, and get through difficult times together.

A 50th Anniversary Event! SPONSORED BY THE ISRAEL COMMITTEE

The Israel Committee of Beth Judea invites you to join us on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at 8:00 pm

This Anniversary not only gives us an opportunity to celebrate our past, but also to prepare for our future. Starting in July, we will welcome our new Rabbi and possibly a new Hazzan and begin to plan for the years ahead. This Anniversary will clearly mark the Gateway to our Future! I hope you will join Rabbi Klatzker, Hazzan Weisberg, Rabbi Lifshitz, and me in supporting the future of CBJ. Become an Event Sponsor Inscribe your Name on the 50th Anniversary Plaque Attend the event on April 29th, 2018 Arnie Goldberg Co-chair 50th Anniversary Committee

In honor of Israel's 70th anniversary and Congregation Beth Judea's 50th anniversary, Steven Peck will be displaying model aircraft and tanks from his extensive collection representing those used in Israel in 1948 during Israel's War of Independence and in 1968, immediately following the Six Day War. He will be giving the back story of many of these aircraft and tanks. It is especially fitting that the event will be on the night of Israel's Independence Day (Yom Ha'Atzmaut) and the week before CBJ's big anniversary celebration. Steven has acquired and built scale models of almost every type of aircraft that has served in the Israel Air Force (including from before the state was officially founded), Israel's various airlines and tanks and military vehicles serving in the Israeli Army.

As Yom HaShoah approaches, my thoughts turn to our rescued Czech Torah scroll, on permanent loan through the auspices of the Memorial Scroll Trust in London, England. Scroll #1400 once belonged to the Jewish community of Mladá Boleslav, Bohemia. It was one of 1,564 Torah scrolls taken by 1942 from Czech synagogues to be stockpiled in Prague’s Michle Synagogue, intended for a Nazi museum of an “extinct race.” After the war, the scrolls remained hidden away until 1963, when art dealer Eric Estorick purchased them all, transferring them in five sealed boxcars to London’s Westminster Synagogue, where the Memorial Scroll Trust was born. Many Torah scrolls remain in their care; many more have been loaned out all over the world. Congregation Beth Judea acquired Scroll #1400 in 1973. Our scroll comes from Mladá Boleslav, situated 37 miles northeast of Prague in what is now the Czech Republic. A Jewish presence was recorded there as early as 1592. At its height in 1880, the Jewish population numbered 865 people. Mounting antisemitism in the 20th century resulted in mass departures, such that at the beginning of the war, the community itself was home to only 183 Jews. After deportations began in Bohemia, their Torah, like many others, was sent to Prague. Across two days in January 1942, 1,041 Jews from Mladá Boleslav and nearby towns were forcibly deported on two trains to Terezín. Of them, only 50 survived. A small congregation was established in town after the war; it closed in the 1950s. There is no longer a Jewish community in Mladá Boleslav, but we are proud to preserve their memory by caring for their Torah. Our Torah scroll will be featured in the upcoming Yom HaShoah service at Temple Chai on Wednesday, April 11. Please join us in commemorating the Holocaust and honoring the memories of those who perished. For more information on the Memorial Scroll Trust, visit www.memorialscrollstrust.org. Hannah Mills

He raised money for the Crohn’s and Colitis foundation for research to hopefully to find a cure. This cause was close to Josh because when he was 10 years old, he was diagnosed with Crohn’s, and it affects his daily life. In addition to raising money from family and friends, he also donated his own money towards the cause. He will be donating toys and games to Lurie’s Children’s Hospital infusion center, where he gets his medicine monthly for Crohn’s disease.

For her mitzvah project, Caitlyn put together a 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament held at Redline Athletics in Buffalo Grove. Religious Education Chutzpah: Good or Bad?

Anna Besser Education Director

Chutzpah, the quality of audacity, can also be defined as sassiness, gall, brazen nerve, incredible guts and arrogance. Over the years, its use has become part of the English vernacular, having been popularized through use in film, literature, and television. So what is chutzpah? It’s an attitude of there’s nothing really to stop you from doing whatever you want.

The Mishnah shares an insight about chutzpah, “Be fierce as a leopard.” When you go about doing all those Jewish things that Jews do, you shouldn’t feel even the slightest embarrassment before those who ridicule you. You don’t have to call them names, you don’t have to react at all. Just keep on doing what you have to do as though they don’t exist. Chutzpah means having the courage to be above it all. As Jews, we need the 2 extremes of chutzpah. We need to maintain a sense of humility that prevents us from acting with chutzpah to do the wrong thing, while maintain a sense of chutzpah to prevent us from being embarrassed to do the right thing. Take a look at Abraham, Moses and David. They had chutzpah. Abraham argued with G-d to not destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. Moses argued with G-d to save the Jewish people. King David wasn’t afraid to fight Goliath and stand up for the Jewish people. Let’s encourage chutzpah in our students, which means we have to allow our students to ask questions. We are inquisitive by nature and should allow for exploration. “In many cultures, teachers teach and students repeat what they learn, but in the Israeli [Jewish] culture — and it goes back hundreds of years — asking is part of the learning,” said Menahem Ben-Sasson, president of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Chutzpah means we should dare to ask, no matter who we are. “In Israel, you do not see a mute class. Somebody lectures and in the middle of it a student will ask a question, offer an alternative understanding or another way of thinking and it will be encouraged.” This inquisitive method of learning is an important component of Israel’s success in innovations. Each and every day we should encourage our students to ask questions, to have chutzpah so that inquisitiveness is ingrained in their learning. Inquisitiveness leads to explorations, which leads to creativity, which leads to new ideas and innovation.

Men’s Club Ladies and Gentlemen of Beth Judea,

I have a confession to make to all of you; I’ve been jealous of a great many of you for a long time. But let me explain. I have some very dear friends here and elsewhere who are Jewish (no surprise), but they almost all have something I did not, and never would, have, specifically Jewish blood. When I go to some friends’ houses, many times there is a long history of their lineage proudly displayed on their walls in a progression of old photos that leaves me feeling vaguely excluded from my people. I have none of those links to the past to hold on to. My Jewish heritage starts with me. Being adopted has precluded me from truly being a MOT or if you will “A Member of the Tribe.” My own children are more Jewish than I am genetically, yet I feel so Jewish that I can’t even fully describe what my faith means to me. There is no point in denying that I am an emotional person, and every holiday or day of remembrance we observe fills my heart with tremendous feelings. Every triumph and tragedy we have experienced or endured as a people strikes me to the very essence of my being. In my heart, I am now and always have been a Jew. But, a very strange bit of information has come into view, I am the product of two parents who were mostly Irish. My last name should have been Keegan, I was told I had three Irish grandparents, and a great grandmother who was full blooded Sioux, so I sent away for an Ancestry.com kit to see how Irish I really am. Here are the results: o o o o o o o o o

Great Britain-13% Ireland/Scotland/Wales-24% Europe West-14% Scandinavia-17% Europe South-11% European Jewish-8% Finland/Northwest Russia-4% Native America-30% Polynesia, Caucasus, Middle East-1% each

So, wait a minute! European Jewish 8%? I’m in! I’m in, I’m in, I’m in! This coming Pesach, I will lead a Seder on the second night, and when I say we were there, I mean we were there! I’m not faking or imagining my feelings; I was there, I mean I was THERE. Now you may look at my results and say, but Jerry, you are 30% Native American! Well rest assured my brethren, I am not about to turn in my tefillin for a tomahawk any time soon. Though the Trail of Tears was a horrible chapter in our American history, a shanda of tremendous proportion, lighting a candle on this Yom HaShoah will fill me with anguish for my lost relatives murdered by savages. So, my 8% means I have a full measure of joy, pain, sorrow, naches, pride, humility, freedom, and great responsibility to be the best child of Israel I can. Last month was a busy one; the fact that our articles for The Word have to be in by the 15th of every month, sometimes requires us to look back a bit to get a full taste of what is going on at CBJ. The Purim reading of the Megillah was an enriching but unconventional experience, as was expected. In between chapters, there was a wide range of occurrences that are unique to this holiday. On March 4th, we had our annual candle packing event and had the biggest turnout we’d ever seen. I would like to thank Sandy Victor, Marty Karlin, Albert Stark, Orin Rotman, Phyllis Udany, Stacy Sachs, Evan Rumack, Joe Rosenfeld, Harold Cohen, Eric Yegewel, Alan Marcus, Rob Likpka, Zak Pesin, Fred Rabinowitz, Barry Bikshorn, Darlene Bikshorn, Maynard Hirsch, Sandy Ramras, M. Groth, Jack Redfern, Abbey Finn, Alexa Feldman, Ron Friedman, and Jerry Sakol. I would like to point out that the USYers helped out even though they were busy with helping teach as madrichim, serving two roles by helping our youth and assisting the adults with a very important endeavor. Men’s Club The evening of March 4th was our annual Wine Tasting Event. Thanks to the hard work of Pam Herstein, Bobbie Goldenberg, Sandy Englander, Evan Rumack, Rob Likpa, and Sandy Ramras, the very hamish event was a success. To anyone out there who did not attend, you aren’t bound in any way to just drink that sweet grape wine our ancestors were stuck with. There are a great many very finely crafted wines with a wide range of tastes that can add a wonderful facet to your seders or anytime at all.

4-11-2018: Yom HaShoah. By now everyone should have received their yellow candles. This is a particularly important Yom Hashoah, as each candle has a sticker with the name of a child killed in the Holocaust. I am hoping that every one of the candles will be kindled to honor them.

On March 11th, our yearly Man of the Year/Youth of the Year event honored Rob Lipka and Ari Weiss — two exceptional people whose contributions have caught the eyes of all who know them. Kudos and yashir koach to you both. You are both inspiring ambassadors of our shul and our faith.

4-19-2018: Yom Ha’atsm’aut

This month of April brings more than a few holidays and activities to Beth Judea.

4-12-2018: Men’s Club Board meeting 4-18-2018: Yom Hazikaron Israel’s Memorial Day

My dear readers and fellow congregants, I hope you have a meaningful seder and healthy month. I think this is the longest WORD article I’ve ever written. Therefore, I must close with best wishes, zei gezundt, and I’ll see you in shul. Jerry Sakol, Men’s Club President

Sisterhood If you are reading this in the beginning of April, then you are still celebrating Passover. We hope your Seders were meaningful and joyous. On that note, first we would like to thank the 12th Annual Passover Wine Tasting event committee on a job well done. Kudos to team leader Pam Herstein, team leader Sandy Goldenberg, Bobbi Goldenberg, and from Men’s Club, Evan Rumack and Rob Lipka. It will be held at North Suburban Synagogue Beth El in Highland Park, and all are invited. There will be wonderful speakers,

SUPPORT BETH JUDEA BY PURCHASING GIFT CARDS

The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws. Historically, the Board of Directors of Congregation Beth Judea has sent shiva baskets to the immediate family of Board members; parents, spouses, siblings and G-d forbid, children. We would like to extend this gesture to the entire congregation.

Purchasing gift cards is one of the easiest ways to support Beth Judea. The Congregation earns a rebate from the vendors when you utilize the gift cards, so there is no cost to you.

Gift cards can be utilized the same as cash, there are no restrictions. If you are shopping for groceries or clothes, going to a movie or traveling, you can help support our Congregation. Order forms for Gift Cards are available in the office or in the Lobby on Sunday morning. They can be purchased with cash, check, or credit cards (a 2.5% convenience fee will be added when paying with a credit card).

You are invited to join the Alternative Shabbat Service which meets every Shabbat morning. LIFE IN ISRAEL THE GOODMAN’S BLOG Howie and Suzanne Goodman were valued members at Beth Judea until they decided to make aliyah in 2009. The Goodmans have agreed to provide us with a blog on their experiences as new olim in Israel. Though we continue to miss the Goodmans, we can all look forward to reading about their adventures in Israel through the blog. The Helping Hand Plan

The Helping Hand Plan A Project of Congregation Beth Judea Hesed Committee   

Do you need some help? Do you need a ride to a doctor’s appointment? Do you need a ride to services at Beth Judea?

WHAT IS THE HELPING HAND PLAN? Beth Judea has a group of volunteers who are ready, willing, and able to lend a hand. Just call or e-mail if you need some assistance. WHO DO I CONTACT TO REQUEST SOME HELP? Please call Larry Wollheim at 847-6349399 or e-mail Larry at lwollheim45@gmail.com or call Rabbi Klatzker at 847-634-0777 or e-mail Rabbi Klatzker at rabbiklatzker@bethjudea.org to request help. It’s a Mitzvah to help someone. Please allow us to help you.

You Make A Difference We firmly believe that reaching out to others benefits not only the recipient, but the person providing help as well. This is, without a doubt, a win-win situation for all involved. If you are interested in making a difference, please contact one of the Hesed (Caring) committee members below: Rabbi Klatzker Ellene Lammers Wendy Wunsch Evan Rumack Larry Wolheim

The Word - April 2018

Hesed Committee

An Important Announcement CONGREGATION BETH JUDEA HESED (CARING) COMMITTEE The Hesed committee would like to know if you have any difficulties/problems that you would like to discuss with a knowledgeable individual. We have a group of congregants who have been trained or are professionals who would be able to provide a brief consultation with you in order to refer you on for more in-depth assistance. We are also thinking about starting some support groups. We would like to know what you feel your needs are. Please email Ellene Lammers at elammers@comcast.net or call the Rabbi. FOR A LIST OF EMERGENCY HOTLINE NUMBERS, AGENCIES AND RESOURCES click here

We Would Like To Know WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records. Please call the synagogue office with this information. Do not assume that someone else will have notified the synagogue staff.
