FROM THE RABBI Interfaith Vigil Remarks following the Terrorist Attacks in New Zealand Rabbi Morris Zimbalist March 17, 2019 The following remarks were delivered by Rabbi Zimbalist at the Interfaith Peace and Unity Vigil following the terrorist attacks in New Zealand. The vigil was organized by the Turkish American Society and the Islamic Society of the Midwest. Approximately 25 CBJ members were in attendance and the event itself brought together 400 supporters, united in hope and prayer, for peace and tolerance.

The hate-filled and horrific events that took place just days ago in the mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, the unimaginable and cowardly terrorist acts that took the lives of 50 innocent souls, left countless worshippers injured and ravaged the lives of too many to count within the Muslim community and greater world RABBI MORRIS ZIMBALIST must be condemned, and I condemn them. Together – united in sacred purpose – we must make every effort to end Islamophobia and all manifestations of religiously - biased hate. Together – united in sacred purpose – we can and we must stand in solidarity to make our world a better place. I have preached these words before and I take great pride in sharing them again. When I look out and see everyone here, I see a beautiful subset of the multi-cultured, multi-colored and multi-ethnic country that we live in. I see Muslims. I see Christians. I see Jews. I see humanity at its best. I see all of us together and I see unity. As I look out and see you, and as you look around and see each other, I respectfully ask that you hear these words clearly and understand the depth of what they mean and represent: There is no room for hate in any house of worship – whether it is a mosque, synagogue or church – there is no room for hate. Hate cannot fill our homes. Hate cannot fill our schools. And the words that we speak to each other, whether we look the same or extremely different, whether we are strangers or best of friends, whether our

beliefs follow the sacred teachings of Moses, Muhammad, Jesus or any other sacred prophet, our words to each other must be spoken with respect, kindness, tolerance, understanding and compassion. That is how we are going to make a difference. That is our responsibility to each other. And that is the purpose behind our creation. The Prime Minister of New Zealand described the attacks in the mosques as one of her country’s “darkest days.” At this sacred hour and in this holy space, we must unite together and become a beacon of light and hope for the greater Muslim community. At this time of unthinkable loss, I, like you, stand proudly with my Muslim brothers and sisters and friends and neighbors. May the goodness of our interfaith gathering today give you strength and courage to meet the challenges ahead and please remember – you are not alone. We are here. We are with you. And I pray that we are blessed to always stand together, united together and supporting each other so that there are fewer dark days in our world and a greater sense of light, love, tolerance and peace shining upon all people. Thank you.

Presidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Message Along with Rabbi Zimbalist and twenty-three fellow congregants, Rita and I returned home from the 2019 AIPAC Policy Conference inspired in many ways. We are inspired to further strengthen our connection with AIPAC and our connection to Israel. We are inspired to bring back the urgency for all of us to be educated and motivated to be activists, now more than ever, as we all are surrounded by growing anti-Semitism and rocket attacks. We were inspired to hear from Democrats, Republicans, Independents, Conservatives, Progressives, Jews, Christians, Muslims, Bedouins, SIDNEY MATHIAS CBJ PRESIDENT and human rights activists. We were inspired to see all the latest innovations from Israeli companies. We held face to face meetings and dialogues with our legislators and told them what was important to us and to the U.S.-Israel relationship. But most of all, we were touched by our common goals, common beliefs, and united strength. We were thoughtful to look at action - not rhetoric, not personalities, not parties. Please consider talking to us and others and watching some of the speeches available online at www.aipacpolicyconference.org. Also, please consider joining us at next year's AIPAC Policy Conference on March 1-3, 2020 in Washington D.C. It will be a very exciting conference ahead of the 2020 national elections. Please join Congregation Beth Judea and Tikkun Olam Volunteers (TOV) on Sunday, April 7th for "Good Deeds Day" at the Buffalo Grove Community Arts Center from 10am until 11:30am. There will be projects for young children, teens and adults to help many first responders. Our theme this year is First Responders/Disaster Relief. Some of the projects scheduled for this most important event are preparing cookies and cards for our local police and fire stations. They will also be collecting hats, gloves, and scarves to be donated to "Journeys The Road Home." CBJ will be collecting plastic grocery bags that will be weaved into fabric and turned into sleeping mats for the homeless. You can help with collecting as many plastic grocery bags as you can. A collection box will be set up at the synagogue. We need as many plastic bags as you can bring to CBJ. We also need your help at the event. "Good Deeds Day" is an international day of 'doing good' founded in Israel in 2007. Participants from over 75 countries throughout the world perform good deeds, proving that any single person can make a difference in their community. You can help improve the quality of health care in hospitals and health clinics in developing countries by saving and donating basic medical supplies such as pill bottles. There is a basket in the CBJ office marked, "Pill Bottles." Please drop off your empty pill bottles. Before dropping them off, please remove all labels, leaving no glue or residue. Please wash them in very hot water and dish soap and rinse and dry them thoroughly. Finally, please replace the lids on clean and dried bottles before putting them in the basket. Each year our Men’s Club provides our families with yellow candles to light in memory of the victims of the Shoah (the Holocaust). During the Holocaust, the Nazis and their collaborators murdered over 1.5 million Jewish children under the age of 16. Unfortunately, lost in this statistic is the tragedy of each and every child that was murdered. This year, Congregation Beth Judea’s Men’s Club again hopes to underscore the horror of the Shoah by providing each Synagogue family with the name of a young victim who may have no surviving relatives to light a candle in their memory. The name, age, and place of death for that child is attached to the candle you received. The lighting of a memorial candle for the dead is a long-held Jewish tradition. During the week of shiva, and on the eve of a yahrzeit, wekindle a light as a symbol of the continuing presence of the dead in our lives. During the Shoah, the symbol the Nazis used to identify Jews for persecutionand eventual death was the yellow star, a patch sewn onto a Jew’s outer garments. The candle we light in memory of the victims of the Shoah is yellow for that reason. We use a bit of the symbol of their suffering to sanctify their deaths. Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance) Day falls on 27 Nisan (May 2) this year. Please attend morning minyan on that day to say Kaddish for a child of the Shoah. Please do not forget to light the enclosed yellow candle on the evening of May 1 and attend the Community Yom HaShoah Services being held at Beth Judea at 7:00 pm on May 1. Alternately, please attend Shabbat services on April 27 which is the last day of Pesach when we will also reciteYizkor. . If you would like to make a contribution to offset the cost of providing these candles, it would be greatly appreciated. One of the functions of a synagogue is to make it possible to remember our shared tragedies. By lighting the yellow candle, we remind ourselves that unspeakable evil was not limited to the Shoah, and that we commit ourselves to preserving its memory as a caution against future evil. There is so much to do to get ready for Passover. If your family is hosting or attending a Seder, there is food to prepare or gifts to purchase. Perhaps you rid your house of chametz (items including leavening), clean extra carefully, or buy special food to consume during the weeklong festival. Below, you'll find a calendar of suggested questions and activities to think about and do from the 1st of Nisan until the 15th, Seder night. Hopefully these suggestions will add to your spiritual and intellectual preparation for the holiday. Sometimes, the "to do" comes before the "to think about"; sometimes it's the other way around; we don't mind the inconsistency, it mirrors what most of our lives look like.

1st of Nisan To Do: To Think About: It's a new month; why not try a new ritual? Men’s Club DAYENU! A word that foretells the upcoming Pesach observance later this month and also very aptly describes what I imagine is almost everyone’s feelings about this year’s horrible winter season. Dayenu! Feh, enough already! Let’s hope that spring is just around the corner and that by the time we all gather together with family and friends to celebrate Pesach, the flowers have started to bloom, the grass has shed its dingy appearance, and the trees show evidence of leafy re-emergence. Another harbinger of springtime is the annual Men’s Club Shabbat that this year takes place on April 6. This special service is led entirely by many of our capable, talented, and spiritual Men’s Club Members. I would strongly encourage everyone to join us for what always proves to be a very inspirational service. If you missed the Passover Wine Tasting event last month, you can still take advantage of the special pricing offered by Binny’s Beverage Depot. While there’s not much else happening this month, a few future Men’s Club events merit mentioning. On May 15, Orin Rotman will again lead a lively and thought provoking “Tap the Torah” discussion on “Does this Make Sense? Some Talmud Mysteries.” Then, on June 23, the Men’s Club is thrilled to be bringing back a very special event – Poker Tournament. The details for this popular event are still being worked on by Fred Rabinowitz, who is leading this effort, and his able assistants. Fred welcomes everyone who’s interested in helping to contact him at rabino49@aol.com. This will surely be an afternoon/evening affair to be long remembered. Lastly, even though it’s still several months away, it’s not too early to sign up for the biennial FJMC Men’s Club International Convention being held in Toronto from July 3-7. The attached link provides more details on the convention and also has a portal to use for registration. Speaking from personal experience, these conventions are truly inspirational and educational. Men’s Club MARCH MEN’S CLUB SPOTLIGHT MEMBER: FRED RABINOWITZ This month’s Men’s Club spotlight member is Fred Rabinowitz. Fred and Susan, his wife of 44 years, have three children and have been blessed with 5 grandchildren. Fred has been an attorney for 43 years and specializes in personal injury. Fred and Sue have been CBJ members for over 30 years. During that time, Fred served 10 years on the CBJ Board of Directors that included terms as Vice President Membership and Vice President Programming. Fred’s involvement with our Men’s Club is even more extensive. He was one of the men who helped resurrect and breathe new life into the club in the early 1990’s and whose efforts and dedication formed the foundation and nucleus of what our club has become today. Over the intervening years Fred served two terms as President and one term as Co-President. In addition, he has been Vice President of both Membership and Programming and was actively involved in our club’s participation in PADS events. He also developed the annual CBJ Block Party featuring the always competitive and exciting Softball Challenge pitting the Men’s Club and USY in a spirited contest. While just about all of the Men’s Club members who’ve been featured previously in this space have also been chosen as our club’s Man of the Year, Fred has the unique distinction of having been chosen twice for that prestigious award. Fred is a club stalwart who can always be counted on to volunteer his time to bring events to fruition. His personal mantra is “what can I do to help?” Although work and the Men’s Club occupy much of his time, Fred always places family first and tries to never miss an opportunity to be with his expanding family. His hobbies include attending action movies and reading science fiction and action books whenever possible.

Fred is truly one of the good guys who quietly, yet very effectively, makes sure our club is successful and that it continues to be a valuable adjunct to the synagogue.

HELP THE ELDERLY ATTEND SERVICES Once a month, the Beth Judea Men’s Club volunteers at the Lieberman Geriatric Center and helps the elderly get to and from services. If you are interested in helping please contact Sandy Ramras.

Your postal carriers will take your donations back to the Post office for collection by the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council. We can always use volunteers to help distribute the food to our pantries located at Beth Am, Kingswood Methodist Church, St. Alphonsus, and St. Mary Parish. i-walk for hunger: Sunday, June 23, 2019: Our annual family walk to raise awareness of hunger in our community. All funds collected are donated to our food pantries. We walk from St. Mary Parish to Hope Lutheran Church and back. Hope Lutheran hosts refreshment and entertainment for the walkers. We welcome you and other community organizations to join us.

BGRA food collection: June: This baseball league collects non-perishable food items for our food pantries.

Mission trip to Des Moines, Iowa. We will be joining other volunteers working with Habitat for Humanity in a project called “Rock the Block.” The trip is tentatively scheduled for July 15-20th. Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration: Sunday, November 24, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. Our annual family oriented celebration filled with song and prayer.
