Rabbi’s Reflections PROPER PESAKH PREP Abraham Lincoln said that one who fails to prepare, prepares to fail. I very much doubt that he had Pesakh in mind when saying so, but he may as well have. Pesakh, particularly the seder, requires more advance preparation than any other holiday, but good planning will make it a wonderful family experience. We should all devote ourselves to these preparations, not only to be good hosts, but to truly feel that we are telling the story of our deliverance as well as reexperiencing it. While we have special Yom Tov services at Beth Judea, as on every holiday, seder is truly the center of Pesakh.

The two main areas that require advance planning are Food and Seder; following is a reminder list of things to do. Discuss these issues as a family before Pesakh in order to maximize participation and enjoyment for all. Consult a good haggadah, such as the Rabbinical Assembly’s Feast of Freedom or the Hartman Institute’s A Different Night for details. Food issues: 1) We remove all hametz (leavened food) from our homes prior to Pesakh or, where that is not possible, put it aside and sell it to a non-Jew for the duration of the holiday. (I will do this for you if you assign me to be your agent; you must sign a form in the synagogue office prior to the holiday.) 2) We purchase all we need for serving family and friends, as well as those items need for the seder plate: beitzah (a boiled egg), zero’a (shank bone), karpas (often parsley) you must sign a form in the synagogue office

prior to the holiday.) 2) We purchase all we need for serving family and friends, as well as those items need for the seder plate: beitzah (a boiled egg), zero’a (shank bone), karpas (often parsley maror (romaine lettuce or fresh horseradish) and haroset (haroset!). 3) Having removed all hametz, we make a ceremonial search for it, using pre-planted and easily found pieces of bread, on the night before seder (search on the evening of April 21st.) This year, a new teshuvah in the Conservative Movement has permitted Ashkenazic Jews to eat kitniyot; but before changing any family customs, be sure to discuss them in detail as a family. Seder issues: Which haggadah will be used? (Some families use more than one and shout out differences.) Who leads the seder or assigns parts? What is the ratio of English to Hebrew? Who recites the four questions? What tunes are used? How will second seder differ, if it does? What time will seder begin and end? (According to Jewish law, seder begins after sunset, 7:21 p.m. this year, coinciding with Shabbat candle lighting.) I will be leading a discussion of these options on April 7th; to share ideas and learn more, join us for dinner that night at 6:30.

Please contact me with any questions. There is no holiday more detail-centered, and thus rife with possibilities for learning and connection, than Pesakh. Let this be the year when we redeem ourselves from the chains of poor planning and leave the Mitzrayim of dull seders. May all your seders be joyful and memorable, and may we all feel redeemed from what ails us. Hag sameakh, Rabbi Jeff Pivo

Notes from the Cantor Remembering Judi, z”l On February 26 of this year, Judi Zelson participated in our Shabbat worship for the last time. She led one of the verses of L’cha Dodi; she enriched our musical Shabbat celebration that evening, as she had on many times in recent years. A week later, having suffered a sudden heart stoppage, she was on a ventilator in the hospital, and within days, she was gone from our lives forever. Judi actually came to Chicago from her native Philadelphia in order to assume the role of cantorial soloist at Temple Beth El in Northbrook, almost two decades ago. She and I got to know one another through the local cantorial organizations, and while she was working in the Reform movement, her background and training at Gratz College gave her a full knowledge and appreciation of traditional Jewish prayer and music. When she left Beth El after a few years, she remained in the northwest suburbs, assisting various Reform congregations with their cantorial needs. She began attending Beth Judea’s Shabbat and holiday services, and in 2013 she decided to join our congregation. Judi quickly became active and soon became an invaluable asset, singing in our High Holiday choir, joining Sisterhood, participating in our Friday eve Shirat Shabbat musical group, subbing for me on Friday nights from time to time, chanting Haftarah on Shabbat mornings, Megillat Esther on Purim, and on Tisha b’Av, she

would recite a chapter of Eikha. She happily volunteered in other synagogue programming, too. Though not many knew much about her, Judi gained the respect and affection of all those with whom she interacted. The fact that she had lived in Munich for three years singing opera, among her many other personal achievements, did not seem important enough for her to share with most people. Her nature was not that of a diva, but of a warm, down-to-earth, dignified woman. While she had never married or had children, in all other respects Judi appeared to meet the Biblical description of a Woman of Valor, one who quietly looked after the needs of others, with a kind and easy smile. She touched our lives with her sweet voice and her fine character. Judi entered Olam Haba on the 30th day of Adar I, as we were about to enter the second month of Adar. We recited the psalms of Hallel for Rosh Hodesh the following day, and my eyes were drawn to the beautiful passage from Psalm 118, “The voice of song and triumph echoes in the home of the righteous.” May Judi’s voice, now among the angels, echo in our hearts in the years ahead. The memory of all the righteous indeed brings us blessing. Wishing all a joyous, kosher Pesach. Hazzan Roger Weisberg

B’nai Mitzvah Bios Miriam Abigail Besser will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, April 9, 2016. Miriam is a seventh grader at Hawthorn Middle School South in Vernon Hills, where she actively participates in choir and student council. Miriam enjoys spending time with family and friends, and kicking butt at Sweatshop. She also enjoys spending her summers at Camp Chi, her “home away from home.” Miriam is celebrating her special day surrounded by family and friends. She is especially grateful to be sharing her simcha with her twin brother, Robbie, and her younger sister, Sarah. She appreciates the love and support of her grandparents, Bella and Izidor Gologorsky and Susie and Jake Besser. Miriam is excited to welcome aunts, uncles, cousins, and family friends from Israel, Canada, Arizona, California, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. Her parents Anna and Michael couldn’t be more proud of all her accomplishments as she prepared for this special day. As part of her Mitzvah Project, Miriam, with family and friends, created blankets for the NICU at Advocate Children’s Hospital. There is a personal connection as Miriam and her twin brother were born prematurely and spent a month at the NICU in Methodist Hospital in Omaha, NE. When delivering the blankets, she saw firsthand the positive impact this makes. The Besser family would like to thank Rabbi Pivo, Hazzan Weisberg, and all of Miriam’s Hebrew school teachers for providing guidance and an excellent Jewish education. Miriam would like to extend a special thank you to Natalie Gurin and Andrea Dickson, who patiently helped her prepare for this amazing experience.

Robert David Besser will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, April 9, 2016. Robbie is a seventh grader at Hawthorn Middle School South in Vernon Hills, where he actively participates in math team and wrestling. Robbie has enjoyed playing soccer for the past 7 years, and currently plays on the Vernon Hills Travel Soccer Team. He also looks forward to his marvelous experiences up at Camp Chi every summer, where he enjoys water sports, the ropes course, and night excursions! Robbie is thrilled to see all his friends and family gather together as he becomes Bar Mitzvah, alongside his twin sister, Miriam. This is a special bond they will always share. He is thankful for the love and support of his grandparents, Bella and Izidor Gologorsky and Susie and Jake Besser, as well as his aunts, uncles, cousins, and family friends. His parents, Anna and Michael Besser, are extremely proud of his hard work as he prepared for this milestone. Near and far, Robbie appreciates everyone’s support and good wishes. For his Mitzvah project, Robbie, with friends and family, created blankets for the NICU at Advocate Children’s Hospital. There is a personal connection as Robbie and his twin sister were born prematurely and spent a month at the NICU in Methodist Hospital in Omaha, NE. When delivering the blankets, he saw firsthand the positive impact this makes. The Besser family would like to thank all those who helped Robbie on his journey to become Bar Mitzvah. This day would not be possible without the outstanding education from his Hebrew school teachers at CBJ. A special thank you to Rabbi Pivo, Hazzan Weisberg, Natalie Gurin, and Andrea Dickson for preparing him for this special day.

Youth WHAT’S UP IN THE WORLD OF OUR YOUTH??? CBJ Youth is a mishpacha (family)!!! Below is something that I wrote while sitting in the hospital after the birth of my third child… It is amazing the perspective that kids give to things! Family… As I sit here in the now, for a moment, quiet hospital room, I look around and realize just how lucky I really am. With the normal craziness (and yes, I know that is an oxymoron) of a typical day paused for just a moment I have a few minutes to reflect. I started to think about just how amazing everything in my life is. I have an incredible family of now five, two great dogs, I do what I love each day, and am surrounded by an amazing extended family. As I continued to reflect, I started to realize that family is the exact reason I love Congregation Beth Judea, and specifically BJUSY and the CBJ Youth so much. The CBJ Youth community, and the members of it, are one big family. Sure, we all come from different backgrounds and have different homes to go home to at night, but each one of us is able to call CBJ our home away from home. We gather together for meals, celebrate each other’s successes, mourn each other’s losses, and are always there for each other. Sure, we bicker, but what family doesn’t? In the end, through the bickering and the differences, we all come together to support a common cause, and more importantly, support each other. BJUSY, and all aspects of our CBJ Youth, functions as one of the best families anybody could hope for. As we have now moved into our official youth house, those family aspects shine through now more than ever. At CBJ youth we take the time to get to know each and every member and try to make each member feel like the special part of our family that they are. We know that not every program will entice or work for every single person, but we want to do our part to bring pieces of Judaism to every person. Membership at CBJ is not just about being able to daven at the High Holiday services or having clergy available for life

events. Membership at CBJ is about being able to laugh around people who will laugh with you, cry around people who will support you and lift you up, and most importantly surround yourself with people who will go out of their way to make your day just a bit better! It is this aspect that has made our CBJ youth and our entire CBJ mishpacha the place that I have been proud to call my home away from home for the last 30 years, and I can’t wait to do it for another 30 years!!! I encourage each and every one of you to evaluate what CBJ means to you. Take some time to try that new program or send your kid to that event that you were considering. So many people have had a chance to find a place of belonging in a home away from home: you and your kids can be next. Next time that opportunity arises, say “yes” and join together with your CBJ mispacha for an event that will impact a lifetime. Some Special Thank You’s: Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers at the Purim Carnival. Teens and adults alike dedicated their time and efforts to help make a very successful Purim Carnival. Be on the lookout for amazing pictures from the event in future emails!!! The entire CBJ Youth community would like to send out a special thank you to the Sisterhood of Congregation Beth Judea. We recently teamed together for a housewarming party that saw over 150 people come through to check out our new house, eat some lunch, make some shirts, and overall have a great time together. None of this would have been possible without the support of our Sisterhood, and specifically their presidents Sherry Krawitz and Kitty Hoffman. Their hard work and dedication made for an incredible event. Thank you to the entire congregation for their generosity at the Purim Megillah reading and for all of their help in making the youth house such a wonderful home away from home for all of our CBJ youth! Save the Date: We will once again be hosting a USY on Wheels Bus. Please save the date of Sunday, June 26th for hosting. More details will be sent out as we get closer. ADULT EDUCATION Welcome to our Adult Education Series. To register for classes or to find out more information, please contact Anna Besser at abesser@bethjudea.org.

Adult Education Series April 2016 Bible Stories You Haven’t Heard Taught by Rabbi Emeritus Lifshitz

Who were Jeptha, Amaziah, and the daughters of Zelophed? Their stories are just some of the lesser known events found in the Tanach (the Bible) that we will discuss. Among others will be those of Rachav and Yael, courageous non-Jews; of Absalom and his rebellion against King David; of Ahab and Jezebel and their evil acts along with Elijah’s response, and of Josiah, a young king who sparks a reformation of Israelite religion and a revival of the nation. Besides finding episodes interesting, we will also seek to find in them lessons relevant for our own time. Monday Evenings; 8:00—9:00 pm April 11 – 25, 2016

Hebrew Literacy III: Amidah - Stand and Understand CO-SPONSORED by MEN’S CLUB Taught by Norm Kurtz & Eric Yegelwel

The Amidah is often called "HaTefillah" - the prayer. Our rabbis compiled 18 pearls of prayer, strung together into a necklace of standing contemplation. Join us to learn more about the Amidah. Tuesday Evenings 8:00 - 9:00 pm Dates: April 5 – May 10, 2106

COST: Members – FREE; Non-Members - $18 for series

Melton: Jewish Mysticism and Kabbalah: Secret Knowledge in Judaism Taught by Rabbi David M. Rosenberg

Despite the public chatter about Kabbalah, for many, this important aspect of the Jewish tradition remains a “closed book”. This course presents the rich history of Jewish mysticism, along with understandings of many of the texts that have been so central to that tradition speaking to the deepest mysteries of human existence and to many of life’s eternal universal questions.

Monday Evenings; 7:00—8:30 pm March 7 – May 23, 2016 Classes Held at Congregation Beth Judea

Text and Context: Pirkei Avot Taught by Rabbi Pivo

What are the ethics that shaped ancient Judaism, and how do they stand up today? In this class we will study the Hebrew text of Pirkei Avot, dating back to the early rabbinic period, and explore the limits of applying ancient traditions to modern Jewish life.

Thursday lunchtime; 12:00 – 1:00 pm Thursday evenings; 8:00—9:00 pm (Through June 9) (will not meet on monthly Board Meeting nights)

Men’s Club On Sunday evening March 6, Congregation Beth Judea’s Men’s Club, along with ten other Men’s Clubs from the Midwest Region, honored their 2016 Men and Youths of the Year. The dinner was hosted by Congregation Beth Judea’s Men’s Club and was held at Beth Hillel Congregation B’nai Emunah in Wilmette. We had 295 people attend the dinner and program. Mazel tov to Orin Rotman, our Men’s Club Man of the Year, and Celia Pivo, our Youth of the Year. Yasher koach to the event chairman Ron Friedman and Master of Ceremonies Jerry Sakol as well as to Allen Harris, Fred Rabinowitz, and Evan Rumack, who formed the rest of the event committee. They did a great job organizing, preparing, and running the event. Beth Hillel Congregation B’nai Emunah’s Jay Lawrence was instrumental in helping us plan for this event, and we greatly appreciate his efforts. The turnout from Congregation Beth Judea was extraordinary. Thank you to our Beth Judea community for a wonderful show of support for your Men’s Club and its honorees.

Hearing Men’s Voices is a signature program of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs that meets the challenge of engaging Jewish Men in Jewish life. North American Conservative/Masorti Jewry faces many challenges. Participation is down, especially among men. Jewish men are opting out of public Jewish life and opting out of Jewish leadership. Hearing Men’s Voices connects men with each other, building the foundations of Jewish community. A Hearing Men’s Voices program is scheduled for Wednesday, April 13, 2016. The program will be “What about me, (God)? Men sharing ideas about personal prayer.” The discussion is intended for men only. It will be led by Orin Rotman and held at Beth Judea following minyan at 7:45 PM. Please note that a Tap the Torah program was originally scheduled to be held at this time. We will still have the “tap” part of the program and plan to provide beer, snacks and soft drinks. There is no charge to attend this program, and you do not need to RSVP if you plan to attend.

Yasher koach to Louis Rabin for coordinating the recent Men’s Club Shabbat. One of the goals of Men’s Club Shabbat is to get as many men as possible to participate in the service. Thanks to all of you who participated in the service.

On April 10, Men’s Club and Sisterhood will cosponsor our annual Passover Wine Tasting. The turnout last year was high, and we hope that this years’ turnout will be even better. Let us prove to you that good Passover wine is not an oxymoron.

Men’s Club is scheduled to pack Yellow Candles on Sunday, April 3. Yom Hashoah begins in the evening of May 4, 2016. Routes will be mapped out and distributed to our members who will deliver the candles to most of the members of Congregation Beth Judea. This process will be similar to how the Hanukah candles were successfully distributed. The memory, lessons, and magnitude of the Holocaust inconceivably continue to fade away and are even denied by some as having occurred. We commemorate this meaningful, historic occasion with the Federation of Jewish Men’s Club Yellow Candle Program. This is a vital, important, and symbolic way to show our solidarity and resolve that we will never forget!

Softball season is fast approaching. Please contact Allen Harris if you are interested in playing for Congregation Beth Judea Men’s Club Softball Team.

We have a group of congregants who have been trained or are professionals who would be able to provide a brief consultation with you in order to refer you on for more in-depth assistance. We are also thinking about starting some support groups. We would like to know what you feel your needs are. Please email Ellene Lammers at elammers@comcast.net or call Rabbi Pivo. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records. Please call the synagogue office with this information. Do not assume that someone else will have notified the synagogue staff.

SHALVA “Its okay, the children aren’t effected” But what if you knew they were?

Did you Know……… SHALVA Collects Cellphones?

Shalva clients will often say that they can withstand their husband’s abuse as long as he never directs his anger toward their children. What many women don’t understand is that children are the silent victims of abuse and that they often repeat the behaviors they have seen.

For quite a few years now, Congregation Beth Judea has been generously collecting cell phones for SHALVA.

According to a recent study, over 90% of children are aware of domestic abuse in their home. These children are affected emotionally, cognitively, and physically. They are at great risk and often experience low selfesteem, shame, fear and guilt. Many distrust adults, fail to thrive or suffer from depression and anxiety. What can we do? The issue of domestic abuse is not just a women’s issue; it affects the entire family as well as our Jewish community. SHALVA offers free counseling to Jewish women who are or were in an intimate partner relationship. If you or someone you know needs our help, call 773-583-4673.

We thought you’d enjoy knowing a bit about how this process works. After we gather the phones you put into the collection box, we ship them to a recycling operation in Florida, Shelter Alliance . They pay us according to the “blue book”value of each phone. In processing the thousands of phones we send them every year, they wipe clean all your personal data and either refurbish your phones, recycle the parts or melt them down. Each year SHALVA receives around $40005,000 just by collecting your old or broken cellphones. All of these dollars go directly to help our clients. Recently Shelter Alliance has expanded their recycling program and now accepts Ipods, Ipads, and Readers. So, the next time you pass by the synagogue office and see the SHALVA collection box, think about all those old cellphones, ipads and ipods taking up space in your drawer or closet, and help us turn them into dollars for clients.

Upon three things the world is based: Upon Torah, Upon Divine Service, and Upon the Practice of Charity.

Cell Phone Drop-Off Box In Synagogue Office! Help domestic abuse victims by donating your old cell phones. Each phone raises money for domestic abuse crisis-counseling services in the Jewish community! There is a collection box in the synagogue office. The Word - April 2016

This includes information on disk as well. We need your article as it is important to let the congregation know what your group is doing.
