Monday night, July 31, 2017, is the eve of Tisha B'Av -- the saddest day in the Jewish calendar. Erev Tisha B'Av memorial Services will be held at 7:30 PM on Monday night at Congregation Beth Judea. The synagogue is located on IL Route 83 and Hilltop Road in Long Grove. The community is cordially invited to attend. The Jewish holiday of Tisha B'Av commemorates the destruction of both Jewish Temples -- the first in 586 BCE by the Babylonians and the second in 70 CE by the Romans. Over the course of time, this holiday has become a time to mourn the persecutions of Jews throughout history, including the Spanish Inquisition and the Holocaust. Like Yom Kippur, Tisha B'Av is a major fast day, observed from sunset to sunset. On Tisha B'Av, as on Yom Kippur, observant Jews abstain from eating, bathing, wearing perfume and leather shoes and engaging in any kind of physical pleasure. During services on Monday night the Book of Lamentations (Eikhah) will be recited and chanted by candlelight as the congregation sits along the steps of the bima or on the floor. This ritual is meant to elicit a reflective and forlorn mood. This powerful book laments the loss of the Temple and describes the desolation of Jerusalem and the suffering of the Jewish people in the five moving chapters of Eikhah.

NOTES FROM THE CANTOR HELPING OUR SOLDIERS An easy way to help our soldiers I made a donation last month to an organization in Israel called CONNECTIONs ISRAEL, supplying a pizza to the IDF soldiers near Israel’s borders. I received a nice thank you email, including a picture of one of the soldiers holding up a card which reads “Thank You Cantor Weisberg”– I have to admit, I was impressed! Below is the information on this program in case you would be interested in participating. HAZZAN ROGER WEISBERG

"Pizza2Give" delivers pizzas to soldiers located on bases and outposts near Israel's borders. We buy pizzas from development town restaurants located in the periphery. In this way, we demonstrate support for both IDF soldiers and small businesses that are affected by continued tensions. As of today we are 1) delivering pizzas to soldiers daily. 2) sending pies to soldiers directly from parents who live overseas, and once every two weeks provide pizza to soldiers whose have come from overseas to serve in the IDF. 3) delivering letters written by IDF supporters to the soldier to let them know their service and sacrifice is appreciated

Make a donation to help our small businesses and show your support to our IDF soldiers.

President’s Message I am very honored and excited to be the next President of Congregation Beth Judea. I would especially like to thank our outgoing president, Arnie Goldberg, for his countless hours of service and dedication to our community. I would also like to thank our outgoing Board of Directors for all their hard work.

SIDNEY MATHIAS CBJ PRESIDENT

At our recent Installation service, we honored some of our fellow congregants for their service to CBJ. Mazel Tov to Diane Ganden, Jeff Karp and Harris Weiner on their Outstanding Service Awards; Tammy Brody and Dana Goldstein on their Board Members of the Year Awards; and Bonnie Sender as recipient of the Rabbi's Award. Thank you to all the volunteers who are responsible for making CBJ "our home.“ We are now starting our 50th year as a congregation, and we will be facing numerous challenges — including hiring a permanent rabbi, a second clergy, and a second cantor or cantorial soloist for our upcoming High Holiday Services. We have a dedicated rabbi search committee in place that will resume after the high holidays. We have appointed co-chairs of a second clergy search committee, and they also will begin their work shortly. We are already receiving applications for a second cantor for our upcoming high holiday services, and we hope to be far along in the process by the time you read my message.

I want to again welcome Rabbi David Klatzker and his wife into our community. If you have not yet met him, I hope you take the opportunity to meet him at "Shabbat Under the Stars" on August 18th. He has many years of experience as both a permanent and an interim rabbi who will help us through our transition.

We are in the process of planning several events to celebrate our 50th anniversary. We will need many volunteers to plan and help at these events. Please contact me with your interest in serving on the 50th Anniversary committee or any of our committees. We have the following standing committees: Finance, Ritual, Membership, Education, Facilities, Youth, Programming, Social Action, Israel Affairs, Communications, Planned Giving, and Ways and Means. We also have special a committees like our Inclusion committee. As you can see from our wide variety of committees, we hope you will find a committee that meets your talents and expertise. I again ask all of our CBJ family to keep our cantorial soloist and friend, Ben Saypol, in your thoughts and prayers. His CaringBridge webpage is https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/bensaypol. It is so very sad but I hope Ben finds comfort in realizing how many friends he has here at CBJ and who have already posted their thoughts on his webpage. Sidney Mathias CBJ President

Ways & Means As the newly elected VP of Ways and Means, my goal is to oversee all fund-raising activities here at Congregation Beth Judea. These fundraisers supplement the pledge drive, donations, and other contributions received by MITCH HECHT our generous congregants here WAYS & MEANS VP at the synagogue. This helps the synagogue meet our annual budget and promotes and builds a sense of community. To date, our first scheduled fund raiser is on Sunday, October 15th for Congregation Beth Judea’s annual Mah Jongg Tournament. It is opened to the entire Northwest Suburban community as well as your neighbors, friends, and family from around the Chicagoland area. Another goal is growing our Tree of Life to recognize wonderful life cycle events from b’nai mitzvah, engagements, weddings, and milestone birthdays and anniversaries. Please contact the office for a form. As is required of all service committees, the Ways and Means Committee shall establish annual goals and plan for monitoring and evaluating the success of the committee in achieving these goals and report regularly to the executive committee on the progress of these goals and the future activities of the committee. The committee meets on the third Tuesday of each month. Our next meeting is August 15th at 8:00 pm following evening minyan. We have lots of ideas and would love additional input. Sincerely,

Shiva Baskets

Shirat Shabbat

Sunshine Fund The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws.

Join us on Friday September 15th at 7:30 pm as we celebrate

SHIRAT SHABBAT

Musical ShaBBaT Celebration!!!

Historically, the Board of Directors of Congregation Beth Judea has sent shiva baskets to the immediate family of Board members; parents, spouses, siblings and G-d forbid, children. We would like to extend this gesture to the entire congregation. As chairman of the Sunshine Fund, donations may be sent to Mitch Hecht at 215 S. Evergreen Avenue, Arlington Heights, IL 60005 or to the shul attention Lisa Neiman.

10-for-10 Summer 2017 Minyan Attendance Challenge

Did You Know... Do you know of information that would be of interest to our congregants? If so, please let us know.

Religious Education We are known as “Am Yisrael – the people of Israel” because we have long considered peoplehood and belonging as a defining characteristic of being a Jew. On an everyday level, this focus is Anna Besser translated into community building Education Director in our congregations. Belonging gives us a sense of purpose, a connection to those around us, and an opportunity to forge friendships through congregational programs, celebrations, and life cycle events.

-

Community is an integral part of CBJ religious school. Jewish families shouldn’t live in isolation. We need engagement with other Jewish families for our community to flourish. Join us throughout the year to continue building our CBJ Community!

So, what makes a community? In simplest terms, a community is a group of people living in the same place and having a particular characteristic in common. -

-

A group is more than two people, as two people create a partnership, but three people make a community. At CBJ Religious School, we emphasize that we are links in a long chain of tradition and history, which has endured for thousands of years, and, hopefully, will endure for thousands more. By providing a loving and supportive atmosphere in which our children can study about their heritage, we hope to instill in our students a sense of pride in who they are and a feeling of responsibility and caring for the continuity of the Jewish people. Living in the same place…we live in the northwest suburbs of Chicago and while our children may go to different public schools, we all come together at CBJ to learn, celebrate, and support one another. At CBJ religious school, each grade and/or class is a community. We get to know one another, work together, and look out for each other. We teach kehillah (community), kavod (honor and respect), talmud Torah (learning), tikkun olam (repairing the world), achdut (unity), and much more. We strive to teach our students to be menchsen.

A particular characteristic in common… a similar story binds us together. Torah unites us. We are given the opportunity to delve into our history and choose how to continue building on it. At CBJ religious school, our educational experiences are designed to nurture personalization of the words of Torah, create a comfort with tefillah, and cultivate each child’s Jewish identity.

Religious Education “More than the Jews have kept the Shabbat, the Shabbat has kept the Jews.” Ahad HaAm

Shabbat is an important part of our school curriculum. We teach our students about the joys and beauty of Shabbat. We train them to become proficient members of our community. In an effort to coordinate what our students are learning in the classroom and what they practice in their daily lives, CBJ has integrated Shabbat service attendance into our curriculum.

Shabbat attendance is a requirement for all CBJ students in Aleph – Heh. During the school year, Aleph through Heh students are expected to attend 9 Shabbat services

(August 1, 2017 – June 2, 2018) Please mark your attendance in the Shabbat Book located in the Robbins Sanctuary

Services that will count toward Shabbat service requirements are: 

Friday night – services begin at 7:30 pm

Shabbat morning Robbins Sanctuary services begin at 9:30 am Junior Congregation services begin at 10:30 am o Will count towards 4 Shabbat services for Aleph & Bet o Will count towards 3 Shabbat services for Gimel, Dalet & Heh

High Holiday Services - Rosh Hashanah, Kol Nidre, and Yom Kippur day services.

Any service in which there is a Torah and Haftarah reading such as Rosh Hodesh - Simhat Torah (morning service) Sukkot - Passover Sh’mini Atzeret - Shavuot

We want the students to come with parents in order to fully enjoy and participate in the service. Students and families must stay for the DURATION of the SERVICE. This is NOT a drop-off Shabbat.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING: HEH students must attend 6 Shabbat morning services prior to their Bar/Bat Mitzvah; these 6 services will be counted towards both the Shabbat service and b’nai mitzvah requirement.

Shabbat services need to be attended at Beth Judea in order to count towards the attendance policy

Our next book club will be on Wednesday, August 16th at Brenda Levin’s home. The book will be Small Great Things by Jodi Piccoult. It is always a joy to gather at Brenda’s home to discuss our books. It’s warm and intimate and VERY enjoyable. Come join us! This year our Paid-Up Membership Dinner will be held on Thursday, September 7th. The next day the baby goes into cardiac arrest while that nurse is the only one on duty.

Does she follow orders or does she intervene? Her decision leads to her being charged with a serious crime. The nurse, along with her white attorney, come to see that what they've been taught their whole lives about others - and themselves - might be wrong. Men’s Club Ladies and Gentlemen of Beth Judea, As the month of August is now upon us, I decided to look up the meaning of the word August. It means “inspiring reverence or admiration of supreme dignity.” The month will come and go no matter what we do, but will we as a congregation live up to that definition in this month? Only we can decide this. This beginning of the secular month of August will usher in, along with many other things, Rabbi Klatzker. I am proud to be a member of Beth Judea and our Men’s Club. I know we, as a congregation on our “honeymoon.” will impress our transitional Rabbi in many ways, as our congregants and lay leaders are our greatest asset. The first of August is also the 9th of Av, the saddest holiday of the year Tisha B’av. As we commemorate our most devastating tragedies, we must also be proud of our tenacity when all hope seems lost. There has hardly been a time when we were not beset by troubles that seem impossible to overcome, and yet we are still here. Our most amazing strength is to bend and adapt to this constantly changing world. Very few of us are huge fans of change, but that is one facet of our people that has and will sustain us thru time. When adversity befalls us, that is when we must embrace and support one another the most. This August 13th, is our softball game Men’s Club vs. The Youth. Everyone is invited, and a wonderful time is guaranteed. This is also a the Congregation Block Party. Check for flyers in our media, and I hope to see everyone there. August 18th is Shabbat under the Stars̶ one of my personal favorite events. Food, fun, music, and ruach will be served in heavy doses. Please bring your entire family, and sing along with the Shirat Shabbat Band. I will be doing my V’Shamru dance. If you don’t know what that is, you should come and find out. August 27th ATTENTION ALL GOLFERS! Sunday is the day of the annual Jack Rizman Golf Outing. We have this as a fund-raising event that helps pay for all of our musical events. We also honor Dr. Jack Rizman who was an extremely talented and enthusiastic participant in so many ways to our synagogue. There are a great many

people who knew him and his family, many that are still active contributors to our shul. Please check the flyer for information on how to reserve a spot, sponsor a hole, or just join us for pizza @ Lou Malnatis. I am really looking forward to this activity. Next month I hope to tell you about the upcoming Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs Convention in Washington DC. Good health and safe travels to all, and I’ll see you in Shul. Jerry Sakol Men’s Club President

Tzedakah Fund The Men's Club has made donations from the minyan tzedakah box to: American Committee Weitzman Institute of Science (ACWIS) Jewish National Fund Hillel International

The Helping Hand Plan

The Helping Hand Plan A Project of Congregation Beth Judea Hesed Committee   

Do you need some help? Do you need a ride to a doctor’s appointment? Do you need a ride to services at Beth Judea?

WHAT IS THE HELPING HAND PLAN? Beth Judea has a group of volunteers who are ready, willing, and able to lend a hand. Just call or e-mail if you need some assistance. WHO DO I CONTACT TO REQUEST SOME HELP? Please call Larry Wollheim at 847-6349399 or e-mail Larry at lwollheim45@gmail.com or call Rabbi Klatzker at 847-634-0777 or e-mail Rabbi Klatzker at rabbiklatzker@bethjudea.org to request help. It’s a Mitzvah to help someone. Please allow us to help you.

You Make A Difference We firmly believe that reaching out to others benefits not only the recipient, but the person providing help as well. This is, without a doubt, a win-win situation for all involved. If you are interested in making a difference, please contact one of the Hesed (Caring) committee members below: Rabbi Pivo Ellene Lammers Wendy Wunsch Evan Rumack

The Word - August 2017

Hesed Committee

An Important Announcement CONGREGATION BETH JUDEA HESED (CARING) COMMITTEE The Hesed committee would like to know if you have any difficulties/problems that you would like to discuss with a knowledgeable individual. We have a group of congregants who have been trained or are professionals who would be able to provide a brief consultation with you in order to refer you on for more in-depth assistance. We are also thinking about starting some support groups. We would like to know what you feel your needs are. Please email Ellene Lammers at elammers@comcast.net or call Rabbi Pivo. FOR A LIST OF EMERGENCY HOTLINE NUMBERS, AGENCIES AND RESOURCES click here

We Would Like To Know WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records. Please call the synagogue office with this information. Do not assume that someone else will have notified the synagogue staff.
