FROM THE RABBI TRADITION AND CHANGE DURING THE HIGH HOLIDAY SEASON As Alison and I started to prepare This High Holiday season, we are for Zachary’s return home from going to experience a few camp, we realized that we had no changes to our services with the family photos displayed in our hope of bringing new and added home. I think that might be an meaning to these holy days and unexpected result of our use of broadening the opportunities for cell phones as cameras and those in our congregation and social media as our forum to community. I’ll high light two display them. That said, we significant changes below: RABBI MORRIS ZIMBALIST decided to print several family photos, frame them and put them Selichot Service: There are many up in our kitchen for us and customs surrounding when we begin reciting guests in our home to enjoy. The pictures selichot – penitential prayers – prior to Rosh memorialize our family over the past three Hashanah. Those who follow the Sephardic years, from Zachary’s Bar Mitzvah to our custom recite selichot throughout the entire nephew’s wedding to our trip to Florida month of Elul, the month preceding Rosh this summer. What stands out to me is how much we change over the course of Hashanah. Ashkenazic Jews tend to follow just a few short years. Speaking solely for the tradition of formalizing a service on a myself, I can tell you that from picture to Saturday night approximately one week prior picture, I have physically changed, to Rosh Hashanah. Centuries ago, that emotionally changed and spiritually service began just before dawn. However, as changed. Even as I look for what remains time passed it became more challenging for consistent in each picture – love of family, communities to sustain a service just before tradition and unwavering commitment to dawn, so it was moved to midnight which, at each other – my understanding and the time, was more desirable. Modern responsibility to those values change congregations have continued to change the within every picture. They continue to time of Selichot services; however, I believe change even now as I look at the pictures the intention has shifted and we focus on and remember how and what I felt back changing times so that we are “earlier than then. Perhaps part of appreciating midnight” rather than “closer to dawn.” All the pictures is recalling the memories, feelings and emotions that took place at more so, as I look at our congregation and the time of the photo and recognizing that hear from rabbinic colleagues from around we cannot and should not live in the past. the country, participation in Selichot services Our challenge is to use the past as both a trend to the older demographics of foundation for and springboard towards congregations. What can we do to make this the future so that change broadens our service more accessible and desirable for understandings of tradition, inclusion and benefit of the greater congregation? How can betterment for ourselves, our families and we actively ensure that it remains relevant for our community. the children and generations still to come? The Word – August 2019

FROM THE RABBI (CONTINUED)

To address those questions and embrace the tenants of tradition and change, this year our Selichot service will take place on Sunday morning, September 22, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. We will continue to use traditional liturgy and our choir will still participate; however, the service will provide more opportunities for us to learn together – whether it is a new melody, a closer examination of a text or a fresh perspective of an ancient custom. We also hope that the timing of services together with the length (approximately one hour) will be more appealing to our greater membership and participation will increase. We will also be serving a formal brunch following services so that everyone can enjoy each other’s company. I hope that many more people will joining us for what promises to be a meaningful Selichot service this year. Tashlich Service: Traditionally performed following the first day of Rosh Hashanah services, Tashlich is the service in which we throw bread crumbs into a body of water to symbolically cast away our sins (which are then consumed by fish or other animals on or near the water) so that we never see or experience them again. Too often, I fear that many of us lose much of the meaning and symbolism of Tashlich simply because of the timing. We’ve been at Rosh Hashanah services for several hours and, rightly so, are tired, hungry and ready to go home. Skipping Tashlich

becomes easy or we simply toss some bread in the lake behind the Youth House, jump in our cars and head home. Our Sages, of blessed memory, have taught for centuries that the Tashlich service does not have to follow the strict custom of being performed on Rosh Hashanah. Rather, as long as Tashlich is performed before the conclusion of Sukkot (i.e., until Hoshanah Rabbah) we have fulfilled the commandment and our obligation, and hopefully successfully cast away all of our sins so that we can begin the year anew – free of our transgressions, forgiven and committed to self-improvement. This year, our Tashlich service will take place on Sunday, October 6, 2019, at 12:00 p.m. which is the Sunday in between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. We will be heading off-site to a local lake and providing bus transportation for our Religious School students. Parents, CBJ members and the greater community will be encouraged to gather together at the lake, bring a picnic dairy/parve lunch, participate in a formal tasting of different apples and different honeys, and then participate in the meaningful and brief Tashlich service. Just as we acknowledge our sins together as a sacred community during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services, so too should we gather together in support of each other and cast those sins away at Tashlich. Our hope is that by changing the time and location of the service, we will make it more accessible and meaningful to all who participate. I hope you are able to join. Great things are happening at Congregation Beth Judea! Thank you for all that you have done to make this past year incredible, and may we be blessed with an even more exciting and meaningful year ahead together! Rabbi Zimbalist

NOTES FROM HAZZAN Achat Sha’alti Me’et Adonai, Otah Avakesh. One thing I ask of Adonai, this is what I seek. To dwell in the house of Adonai all the days of my life. To behold Adonai’s beauty and to pray in Adonai’s sanctuary (Psalms 27:4). In the month of Elul, we add Psalm 27 to our daily prayers to help prepare us for the High Holy Days. To me, a great gift of Judaism is that the correct meaning of any text is how each of us interprets it at that moment. Each day leading up to the High Holy Days, I find different meaning in this particular text. Even as my interpretation of Adonai’s house and Adonai’s beauty may change, one thing always remains the same: that Adonai’s sanctuary is always the space I create for prayer. This month we will celebrate Shabbat Under the Stars, once again making our prayer space the JCC Elaine Frank Apachi Camp. Last year, I found that my understanding of Adonai’s house was the world in which we live, and Adonai’s beauty was the sound of the Beth Judea family singing together in prayer. Over

the next few weeks watch for videos on social media and through e-mail of some of the melodies we will be singing together at Shabbat Under the Stars on August 23rd. We will see Adonai’s beauty in each other as we sing together in the sanctuary that we will create. As the High Holy Days approach, we share with each other for our interpretations of this text. What does it mean to you to dwell in Adonai’s house? What does Adonai’s beauty look like to you? What does Adonai’s sanctuary look like to you? Achat Sha’alti, one thing I ask of you: Send your interpretations of this text to hazzanezring@bethjudea.org with the subject: “One Thing I Ask,” and your personal interpretation could be incorporated into our S’lichot service this year as we begin the Days of Awe, our High Holy Days. For inspiration, enjoy this setting of Achat Sha’alti: http://bit.ly/AchatShaaltiEzring. Thank you, Hazzan Gil Ezring

President’s Message I am honored and humbled to be the new president of Congregation Beth Judea. My husband, Ken, and I have been members for 16 years. I’ve served on the Board of Directors for the past 5 years and as an Executive Committee member for 4 of those 5 years. There are so many great things happening at CBJ. It is a great time to become the president of the synagogue!! We have inspirational clergy, dedicated staff, committed lay leaders and volunteers, and a loyal congregation who make up DANA GOLDSTEIN CBJ PRESIDENT the CBJ community. I would like to thank Sid Mathias for serving as our president for the last two years. Sid did an incredible job by transitioning both Rabbi Klatzker and Rabbi Zimbalist as well as Hazzan Ezring. CBJ is in the stable condition that it is today due to Sid’s leadership and direction. The congregation owes a debt of gratitude to not only Sid, but to Rita, who supported him during his tenure!! Thank you, Sid and Rita. Were you able to attend the Awards and Installation Shabbat on June 29? We had the opportunity to honor our dedicated staff member and committed lay leaders and volunteers. Mazel Tov to: Rabbi’s Award Recipient: Louis Rabin Board Member of the Year: Herb Finn and Sherry Krawitz Outstanding Service Awards: Trudy Balogh, Dave Colen, Anna Kudlowitz, and Paul Zucker Distinguished Service: Lisa Neiman There are lots of events that will happen at CBJ in August. Trivia, ice cream and the viewing!! Please join me. Are you a softball fan? Do you enjoy a friendly competition between the Men’s Club and USY? This year, the Men’s Club has invited clients of Keshet and their families to join us. Shabbat Under the Stars was a huge success last year!! This year, it will again be held at the JCC Elaine Frank Apachi Day Camp on August 23, 2019. Please join me for ruach, a BBQ Dinner, Shabbat services, and oneg. Last year was such a cool experience for our congregation with a record-breaking crowd. I challenge you to break that record this year!! The membership committee, led by Arnie Goldberg, is committed to enhancing the experiences of our congregants. One group that is now formed is the Boomers + or -. The first event for this group is on August 25, 2019. It is a meet and greet to kick off this exciting new initiative. While this event is at the synagogue, not all events will be there As excited as I am for these events, I’m so thrilled that CBJ is in the process of planning a congregational trip to Israel. Did you get the survey? Whether you filled it out or not, it is not too late. Please watch for more announcements on what will be a memorable experience for all who participate. HESED COMMITTEE Congregation Beth Judea is more than just a building. It is a caring community, and we are here to help each other in times of need. The Hesed committee consists of dedicated volunteers who want to support our congregants when they need it most. As such, we offer a variety of services that we hope will be helpful to our CBJ congregants. The committee has five (5) sub-committees, outlined below, that would welcome the opportunity to be of assistance. Please let us know if you need assistance by calling the synagogue office or emailing the Hesed chairs Marilyn Green-Rebnord (megx150@comcast.net) or Evan Rumack (evanbr1@comcast.net). Confidentiality is one of our major concerns, so please do not be embarrassed to ask for our help. Only our chairs and the volunteer will know. 

If you are ill — and give permission to our clergy or office staff — we will try to have a committee member call to see how you are doing and if you need anything. This may include a hospital, rehab facility, home, or skilled nursing care visit during your illness. If you need help getting to a doctor’s appointment, religious services, synagogue programs, or such errands as prescription pickup, our committee is set up to help you. While we may not always be able to make such arrangements, we will do our best. Should you have a loss, we will try to arrange for a committee member to stay at the shiva house during the funeral service so the house will not be unattended, and no family member or friend need miss the service. We will be there to accept deliveries, but not to set up the kitchen. Rabbi will ask you if you would like this help when he is contacted. For security reasons, you will be told in advance who is coming to your home. Should you need, the committee will try to arrange to attend the evening minyan at the shiva home to ensure that a minyan is present to enable mourners to say kaddish. Minyan leaders are also willing to help. At the end of shloshim, we will contact you to check in during your bereavement. It is our intention that this period will be marked during the evening minyan by acknowledging your loved one’s name and by dedicating the reading of a psalm to them and inviting you to the service.

We would like to thank our current committee members: Bruce Darin Joanne Dicker Steve Dicker Cathy Feiger (congregant calls coordinator) Helene Fox Marilyn Green-Rebnord (Hesed co-chair) Ellene Lammers (shloshim coordinator) Brenda Levin

Marcie Marcus Louis Rabin (shiva minyan coordinator) Orin Rotman Evan Rumack (Hesed co-chair) Merle Rumack Heidi Sakol Bonnie Sender (shiva house sitting coordinator) Barb Stark Larry Wollheim (driving/Helping Hands coordinator)

If you have any questions or wish to join us, please contact Marilyn Green-Rebnord (847-821-7740) or Evan Rumack (847-253-4130).

CBJ Business Directory Advertising Opportunity

The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws. Historically, the Board of Directors of Congregation Beth Judea has sent shiva baskets to the immediate family of Board members; parents, spouses, siblings and G-d forbid, children. We would like to extend this gesture to the entire congregation.

B’nei Mitzvah Bios Madeline Sarah Berenson will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, August 31st, 2019. Madeline will be entering 7th grade at Bernotas Middle School in Crystal Lake, where she plays flute in the school band. Madeline loves performing on stage and has held roles in school plays and musicals every year since she was in 4th grade. She is also a competitive travel softball player. She is a talented pitcher and plays 2nd base and outfield. Madeline also enjoys golfing and has developed quite a swing, even participating in the golf club at school. Madeline also enjoys art, cooking and baking, time spent with friends, and traveling with her family. Some of her favorite trips include visits to Oval Beach in Saugatuck, Michigan; hanging by the pool and seeing amazing shows in Las Vegas; and trips to California, Colorado, New York, Florida, and Virginia. Her most special trip was, by far, her visit to Israel with her parents, Rabbi Lifshitz, and other members of CBJ when she was only 4yrs old. She was such a wonderful traveler at such a young age that she amazed all the other travelers; and she has been remembered fondly as a special part of their trip too! Every August, Madeline enjoys helping her mom set up her classroom before school

begins. Sometimes she even gets to help out when class is in session before her own school year begins. Therefore, as we approach this time of year again, for her Mitzvah Project, Madeline is collecting school supplies to donate to the Kids In Need Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps level the playing field for students who don’t have the supplies they need to be successful in school. In addition, Madeline volunteered her time stuffing backpacks with school supplies for Project Backpack at Elgin Community College. The backpacks were then passed out to needy students in local school districts. Madeline will share this simcha with her very proud parents, Mitch and Stacey Berenson, and her younger sister Alyssa. She will also be celebrating with her grandparents: Jean Berenson, and Craig Luttig and Barbara Friedman-Luttig, as well as many other family members and friends from near and far. The Berenson family would like to extend a very special thank you to Rabbi Zimbalist, Hazzan Ezring, and Kim Abern for assisting Madeline as she prepared for becoming a Bat Mitzvah. Additionally, the family would like to thank Rabbi Lifshitz for being here to celebrate this special day with Madeline, as well as many other synagogue members who have watched her grow over the years, bringing her to this point in beginning her role as a Jewish adult.

Congregation Beth Judea Mission Statement Congregation Beth Judea is a welcoming egalitarian synagogue whose mission is to create a warm and inviting home that serves the lifelong spiritual, educational and fellowship needs of our members. Youth WHAT’S UP IN THE WORLD OF OUR YOUTH??? Camp Camp Camp and Now We’re Back!!! Over the past month, in addition to spending time with family, I once again had the pleasure of visiting our CBJ youth and teens at various Jewish day and overnight camps across the Chicagoland and Wisconsin areas. I had an AMAZING time!!! It is hard to describe the feeling that I get inside when I enter one of these camp communities. It is one of those warm fuzzy feelings that permeate throughout your body. I find it impossible to hold back a smile when I enter one of these Jewish camps. This year’s camp visits included some extra excitement for me as I got to visit the camps that two of my children were at and I got to see them in action. Additionally, I watched one of our BJUSY board members race against a staff member up the climbing wall at Apachi day camp. At Ramah overnight we got the pleasure of watching the dress rehearsal of the musical, Sound of Music, performed entirely in Hebrew. It was a very impressive site. This year we will offer programs that cater to the artists, the athletes, the techies, the board gamers, the writers, the readers, the adventurers, and the social butterflies. We will have programs that will thrill, educate, scare, enlighten, surprise, excite and so much more. The only way, however, for our programs to do any of that is for you to help get people to them. Send us your sons, your daughters, your sisters, your brothers, your nieces, your nephews, and all of your grandchildren!!! We will make believers out of all of them. Be sure to take a look at the pictures from all the different camp visits by clicking one of the folders below! Religious Education

Anna Besser Education Director

It’s true. The most important thing we can do at CBJ Religious School is create and foster opportunities for our families to build relationships with one another and create a Kehillah. Easier said than done, so where do we start? Sometimes it’s as simple as jumping right in. This upcoming year join us for our opening day, our family programs, our social outings. These school programs are designed to foster parent engagement and social interactions to build relationships to one another and to Congregation Beth Judea. Our auxiliary organizations offer additional ways to connect. Interested in softball? Join the Men’s Club Softball League. Interested in art/mahjong/social events? Join Sisterhood. Volunteering is your thing? Join the Social Action committee. We have many ways for you to become involved. A Kehillah such as ours is diverse. We celebrate our diversity of opinion, diversity of Jewish practice, social diversity, diversity of profession, diversity of abilities, and more. All of these differences make our community stronger. Kehillah teaches us to recognize ourselves in one another rather than divide on the differences. So, take the first step. This month we have numerous opportunities for engagement within the school and the synagogue community. • • •

A Season of Mussar: Information Sessions Facilitated by Sherry Weinberger through the Mussar Institute

Mussar- Exercise for your soul You exercise your body, but what about your soul? The study and practice of Mussar will do just that. Join Sherry Weinberger to learn more about A SEASON OF MUSSAR and hear what's involved in participating. Two information sessions are being offered for your convenience.

Thursday, August 8, 2019 11 am & 8 pm @ Congregation Beth Judea Life comes with tests - often in the relationships with the people we love the most. Those tests try us. They also reveal the places where we have the potential to grow spiritually. The Jewish tradition of Mussar offers wisdom for facing and making the most of life's challenges to help you find peace, love, and fulfillment in heart and soul. A Season of Mussar is a 13-week program that is split between 7 group lessons and 6 chevruta (study partner) sessions that guides participants in active engagement with Mussar as a spiritual tradition and a discipline in order to learn and transform. Mussar is accessible to all people, regardless of age, gender, or level of Jewish knowledge. The only criteria are for a person to have a desire to grow spiritually. Mussar offers us a "map" of the inner life and a body of practices to transform our inner ways.

Please contact Lisa Neiman at lneiman@bethjudea.org or 847-634-0777 if you need any special accommodations, including transportation, to participate in our program.

Sisterhood The universe has prompted me with opportunities at very auspicious times in my life, a new relationship (fast forward to husband) after an apartment fire, an admission to nursing school when it was time to find a new direction, and a new, fulfilling position when I knew my time as a bedside nurse had to come to a close. I didn’t know that they were coming, yet there they were. Each one has taken me out of my comfort zone and changed and evolved me as a human being. I am embarking on another opportunity, Sisterhood co president. It wasn’t really what I saw for myself, but here I am! The welcome I have received from the women of Sisterhood has been so warm, inviting, and frankly humbling. I must admit I am nervous. I have very big shoes to fill. At the same time, excited to take on a new opportunity that seemed to be waiting. For those of you who have not found Sisterhood yet, I encourage you to do so. You never know what a quick step outside your comfort zone will do for you until you try. We had a beautiful Installation dinner to celebrate the outgoing board members and welcome in the new. Thank you to Sherry Krawitz and Debbi Green for planning and running the event. It was so nice to see so many members attend. The next big event is the Rummage sale. We have been able to extend the drop off and the dates of the sale. That means we will need everyone’s help! Drop off starts on July 21st through August 1st (no drop off during Shabbat). The sale will be Aug 2nd, 4th, and 5th. Come for an hour, come for a few hours. Help the day of the sale. No set of hands or legs will be turned away! Please contact Helaine Katz-Ratzkoff (helainerae@gmail.com) Kitty Hoffman (mskitty.hoffman@gmail.com) for any additional information. We are using SignUp Genius this year. Let us know if you want the links to sign up to help. We have lots of other great events planned for the year. Stay tuned and get involved! Men’s Club This is being written a few days after returning from the biennial FJMC International Convention that was held this year in Toronto from July 3-7. To say that I’m still abuzz from this wonderful event is an understatement. While hard to put into words, attending one of these conventions is a stimulating, exhilarating, educational, and highly spiritual experience. I didn’t imagine that attending my second convention would fill me with the same, and in some cases even stronger, kinds of feelings that I had from my first experience two years ago in Washington, D.C. I thought that the intense feelings I had during and after that first convention were simply a result of it all being new to me. Attending my second convention however, showed me I was wrong. Although the keynote speakers, many varied and interesting breakout sessions, and Cantor’s Concert are all worthwhile convention staples by themselves, the indescribable, almost transcendent experience of davening with over 300 men (and several women) moved me to my core and lifted me spiritually to heights not experienced before. While this was only my second convention, there are several Men’s Club members who have been to as many as ten and still look forward to the next one; it’s that amazing of an experience. If you haven’t had the opportunity to attend one of these conventions, I would strongly encourage you to make it a personal priority to not miss the next one that is scheduled for 2021; you’ll be a different and better person after being there. Turning now to the regular report of Men’s Club activities, the Poker Tournament held on June 23 was a rousing success attended by 39 participants. After many hours of spirited competition broken up by a sumptuous deli dinner, there were three players left at 10pm who were vying for the top prize. Rather than continue playing for an indefinite amount of time, the three competitors graciously decided to pool the prize amounts for the top three players and divide that amount evenly; how appropriately mensch like was that!? The top three - in no particular order were: Steve Dicker, Noah Ban, and Andrew Tomashow. A very hearty “thank you” to all 39 who competed. A much bigger “THANK YOU” and Yasher Koach to those men and women whose tireless efforts helped make the evening a success. The

volunteers who gave generously of themselves are: Event Chairperson Fred Rabinowitz, Allen Harris, Steve Limer, Arnie Bender, Karen Edidin, Rob Lipka, Chuck Walcer, Larry Bender, Alan Friedlander, Jerry Sakol, Eric Yegelwel, Norm Kurtz, and Noah Ban. On July 14 the Beer & Burgers (a/k/a Moo & Brew) event was held featuring craft beer from the Buffalo Creek Brewery in Long Grove and a fun game emceed by our very own Brandt Rosen. As usual, this was a fun event at which everyone had a good time. Special thanks to Allen Harris and Steve Limer for organizing and helping to make the event run smoothly. While the summer months are usually quieter than the rest of the year, we do have a very special event coming up on August 18. That is the date of the Annual CBJ Block Party. This has grown to become one of the hallmark family events for the shul featuring games and activities for all ages, equipment from the Buffalo Grove Fire Department, a DJ, the fiercely competitive Men’s Club versus USY Challenge softball game, food (naturally), and much more. But this year there’s going to be something special. This year, the Men’s Club has arranged to have residents (and their family members) from several local Keshet facilities attend the Block Party as our guest. If you haven’t heard about Keshet, I strongly encourage you to check out their website at: Keshet.org. Started by a few people in Chicago over 36 years ago, it has grown to over 70 sites in the Chicago area and Midwest serving over 1,000 individuals with disabilities. Their mission statement is: To do whatever necessary to allow individuals with disabilities to achieve their potential.

We’d like to have at least one adult accompany each Keshet individual during their time with us, so it is requested that you make every effort to join us that day. Your participation will certainly be worthwhile and help make it a very special day for some lucky person; it’s an extra-special kind of mitzvah that you will long remember. Ron Friedman, BJMC President

Men’s Club AUGUST MEN’S CLUB SPOTLIGHT MEMBER: LOUIS RABIN This month’s Men’s Club spotlight is shining brightly on Louis Rabin. Louis and his wife of 33 years moved to Buffalo Grove and joined Beth Judea 21 years ago and are the proud parents of two sons. Louis’ many contributions to the shul include: leading part of the Shachrit service during the High Holydays every year, leading Shabbat services throughout the year, regularly reading Torah for Shabbat and the morning minyan, leading the morning minyan, and heading up the Shiva Committee where he helps to ensure there is someone to lead a minyan at a member’s home, if needed, and often leads the service himself. He also served a term on the synagogue Board of Directors. His Men’s Club contributions are equally impressive. He served as Ritual VP and in that position organized the annual Men’s Club Shabbat, prepared the services for the Men’s Club Winter Retreat held in Lake Geneva, and served as Ritual Chairman for the FJMC Midwest Region retreat held in Starved Rock. Louis and his family enjoy traveling and take many road trips together that include a visit to the Stoogeum, a museum in Ambler, PA dedicated to collecting and preserving memorabilia about the Three Stooges; an experience he highly recommends to everyone. They also visit NYC often and regularly attend Second City reviews. Louis likes to read when time permits and is partial to spiritually themed books. His fondness for the book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance led to his purchase a few years ago of a Honda Nighthawk that he rides whenever time and weather permit. Louis spends his days delivering product for Edible Arrangements which provides him the opportunity to see a lot of the surrounding suburbs, listen to his favorite radio programs, and best of all, be heartened many times every day by the happiness he witnesses in the people receiving the fruit basket gifts. Louis is certainly someone to know, admire and call a friend.
