Rabbi’s Reflections A GOOD START TO A GOOD YEAR Because of the intricacies of the Hebrew calendar, our High Holiday observances shift later in the secular year to October (their date on the Hebrew calendar is, of course, fixed.) It is a great opportunity for us to begin our year in September by learning together in adult education courses and in our religious school, even prior to the holidays, rededicating ourselves to our most deeply held values.
Three of those values are the study of sacred texts, Jewish ritual and keeping Judaism alive and well for future generations. All three come together this fall as we dedicate our new Sefer Haftarah on September 18th. As I announced earlier in the year, as part of our Me’ah campaign, we have commissioned such a scroll, and now we are making sponsorships of its sections, verses and even single words available to our members. Coming together to celebrate a beautiful new scroll in this way weaves together prophetic words from our past, the ritual of our weekly lives in the present, and the future that our Me’ah campaign will establish for generations. This scroll includes every haftarah read during the year on Shabbat and holidays and, like other sacred scrolls, is hand-written by a sofeir/scribe. Unlike a Torah scroll, a haftarah scroll can include vowels, making reading it as easy as a printed text. Our scroll will indeed include vowels, as well as the trope marks which readers use
to sing the haftarah properly. In addition, we will be able to inscribe the names of families who sponsor entire sections directly onto the scroll, enabling them to commemorate b’nei mitzvah celebrations, anniversaries, or memorials, making permanent and public dedications of favorite haftarot. This new scroll is not merely decorative. We will be using it regularly during Shabbat and holiday services and encouraging all our readers to do so. The funds raised by its sponsorships will go to our permanent endowment fund, which will in turn benefit our members for many years to come. We want the entire community to take part in the dedication of this new scroll. Sponsorships for words, verses, or entire haftarah sections are available, but major sponsorships for are limited; if you are interested in sponsoring an entire haftarah selection, please contact me or our Me’ah cochairs, Steve Limer and Paul Saharak. We will celebrate the writing of the sefer haftarah with a public ceremony, music, and lunch on Sunday September 18th at noon. Mark your calendar now for what is sure to be a joyous and moving celebration of this new scroll, a permanent reminder of our devotion to our tradition, to our synagogue, and to our members’ life cycle events.

NOTES FROM THE CANTOR SHELOSHIM As we enter August, the Jewish people are observing the three-week mourning period leading up to Tisha b’Av, the day which commemorates the destruction of both the First Temple (586 B.C.E.) and Second Temple (70 C.E.), and numerous subsequent tragic events that occurred throughout our long history. Other than Yom Kippur, Tisha b’Av is the only full day of fasting in the Jewish calendar. This year we observe Tisha b’Av, or the 9th of Av, beginning after Shabbat ends on Saturday evening, August 13, when we will listen to the sad, despairing melodies of the Book of Lamentations and mourn our tremendous loss. The three weeks leading up to Tisha b’Av, during which Jewish weddings do not take place, among other restrictions, preview this sad occasion. For a few days, those three weeks overlapped the 30-day mourning period called sheloshim which, as many of you know, I have been observing in memory of my beloved father. Sheloshim is the Hebrew word for 30, and along with shiva (7 days) and the eleven months of mourning for a parent, the 30 days of sheloshim are recognized as an important and meaningful stage in the Jewish mourning process. It is a time of transition, the mourner returning slowly to her/his life, while trying to allow for the many adjustments which must be made. I am but one of many in our congregation and community who have suffered the loss of a parent or loved one recently. I think my own loss has made me more keenly aware of their grief as well, just as they have been among the many of you who have been so kind in offering me words of comfort, in visiting as I sat shiva, in donating to meaningful causes in my father’s memory. There is a certain irony I have been feeling. My month of sheloshim coincides with another, much different type of sheloshim for me – I have now begun my 30th year here at Beth Judea. What an

amazing blessing these years have been, both for me personally, and for my family. My dad loved synagogue life, as did his own father. During his school years, my dad learned to daven and to chant Torah and Haftarah, he became president of his USY youth group chapter, and after his years in the Navy and in college, he returned to that same shul. He headed the Education and other committees, ultimately serving as synagogue president. He was active in so many organizations and supported so many worthy causes I could not even begin to list them. In later years, of course, he and my mom (z”l) would come here to celebrate some of the Holidays or our family simha’s at Beth Judea, and Dad always loved the warm, cordial greetings he would receive. Not long after the loss of my mom in early 2005, we were celebrating my being with the synagogue for 18 years, and it was in connection with that event that he also donated an initial set of weekday siddurim to Beth Judea, including my mother’s name along with his own in this tribute. He was proud that he could help support our synagogue, which has supported me and my family in every way, now for these past thirty years. Audrey and I had planned to visit my dad for his birthday in mid-July. We returned to my native Detroit instead reciting Kaddish alongside one of my brothers, who still resides there. And then we continued on in the car to New York, spending a Shabbat in Toronto, several days in (Ontario’s) Niagara Falls, and numerous other locales. In each place I would manage to locate a minyan in order to recite Kaddish, and we had some truly remarkable experiences as a result. Being a recent mourner, I was invited to lead the davening in some of the Orthodox and Chabad communities we encountered, but even when I was not expected to lead, despite all my training and years

NOTES FROM THE CANTOR
Tisha B’Av Schedule
SHELOSHIM (continued) in the pulpit, it was often challenging for me to keep up – unlike us, many of these congregations (to my surprise!) followed the Sefardic liturgic traditions. And yet it was always worthwhile! I felt support and consolation each time. Psalm 147, recited in our our daily liturgy, carries the beautiful verse, “[Hashem] heals the brokenhearted, binds up their wounds.” I do believe that. One of the people I met put it like this, “We are all strangers, but we are all family.” Indeed, that is the beauty of our Jewish world. So my month of sheloshim has ended, as my ‘sheloshim’ year at Beth Judea begins. Like the story of the Jewish people, life is a journey, filled with many ups and downs. After Tisha b’Av, we will be looking ahead to the New Year. In that season, we will find further words of consolation in Psalm 27: “Though my father and my mother leave me, HaShem will care for me.” Barukh Dayan Emet – praised is the true God, and my deepest thanks, again, to all of you. May we enjoy our friends, our family, our remaining weeks of summer and years to come, in good health.
See you in shul, Hazzan Roger Weisberg

Religious Education EDUCATING FOR LIFE: How is our education making us better people? In Aryeh Ben David’s eJewishPhilanthropy post, he describes 3 stages of education. The first two stages focus on acquiring content (becoming literate Jews) and developing personal connections to the sources. Ben David argues that what we need to shift our thinking to a more practical focus on Jewish living. He writes: The first…connected to our minds, asked the question – “What do I know?” The second…connected to our hearts, asked the question – “Am I connected to what I know?” Both stages addressed the needs of their times, and yet both came with ‘shadowsides’. We are now ready for the next step: educating for life. Educating to make us better people. The third stage of Jewish education asks the questions – “How can I bring my learning into my life? How does (sic) what I know and my personal connection to this knowledge change me? How is Jewish education making me a better person?” Let’s look at the 3 stages of education through the lens of Brachot. Thousands of years ago, Judaism instituted the reciting of brachot (blessings) before eating. Stage 1: The goal of saying the bracha is to know the words AND meaning of the bracha. Stage 2: The goal of saying the bracha is to feel connected to the words of the blessing. Stage 3: The goal of the bracha is to affect me and transform how I eat. The test of saying a blessing is whether it changes how I actually eat. This third stage of education forces us as educators to teach content, develop personal connections, and think about how this knowledge and connection affect the student – after the class is over. While we need those “aha” moments of personal awakening and excitement, what is most important is providing tools for our students to become their best selves and live through the middot and mitzvot they learn about. This is a challenge the Education Vision committee is taking on. We are looking at our curriculum to see how we can educate for life. We will continue connecting to our minds and to our hearts, but what we need most is to find ways for the learning to become internalized into our students’ day-to-day lives. Read the full-length article at: http://ejewishphilanthropy.com/the-third-stage-of-jewish-education/ Don’t forget to join us on Wednesday, August 24th at 6:30 pm for our Ice Cream Social & MiniMitzvah Day. -Anna Besser !

Religious Education Shabbat Service Attendance: Shabbat is an important part of our school curriculum. We teach our students about the joys and beauty of Shabbat. We train them to become proficient members of our community. In an effort to coordinate what our students are learning in the classroom and what they practice in their daily lives, CBJ has integrated Shabbat service attendance into our curriculum. Shabbat attendance is a requirement for all CBJ students in Aleph – Heh.
During the school year, Aleph through Heh students are expected to attend 9 Shabbat services
(July 29, 2016 – May 31, 2017) Please mark your attendance in the Shabbat Book located in the main Sanctuary

Shabbat morning – services begin at 9:30 am. Aleph & Bet families may attend the Gan Shabbat service which begins at 10:30 am in the Beit Midrash.
High Holiday Services - Rosh Hashanah, Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur day services.
Any service in which there is a Torah and Haftarah reading such as Rosh Hodesh - Simhat Torah (morning service) Sukkot - Passover Sh’mini Atzeret - Shavuot We want the students to come with parents in order to fully enjoy and participate in the service. Students and families must stay for the DURATION of the SERVICE. This is NOT a drop-off Shabbat.

Youth
WHAT’S UP IN THE WORLD OF OUR YOUTH??? We’re Baaaack!!! That’s right friends... the BJUSY that you know and love is back for another raucous year. We are returning to you with fresh faces and expanded programming. The fun all begins August 21st with our annual USY vs. Men’s Club softball game and BBQ at the amazing Beth Judea Block Party. Be sure to join us there as we kick off another great year!!! Inclusion is the big theme of this upcoming year. While many people who hear the word inclusion immediately think of modifying or adapting a program to make it so that people who may have special needs or otherwise were not able to participate are now able to, we are targeting a much broader audience with our inclusion theme. Whom, you may ask, is our audience then??? EVERYBODY!!!
Our goal this year is to provide programming that is dynamic and different enough that there will be something for everybody. This requires your help. Ever meet somebody who says “Oh, USY is not for me,” or “I don’t do Kadima,” or worse yet, “Synagogue programming that can’t be fun?” We need you to help change the narrative with those people. Help somebody take that first step toward what can be a life changing program. This year, we will offer programs that cater to the artists, the athletes, the techies, the board gamers, the writers, the readers, the adventurers, and the social butterflies. We will have programs that will thrill, educate, scare, enlighten, surprise, excite, and so much more. The only way, however, for our programs to do any of that is for you to help get people to them. Send us your sons, your daughters, your sisters, your brothers, your nieces, your nephews, and all of your grandchildren!!! We will make believers out of all of them. Make sure to also be on the lookout for our upcoming open house date for parents to come by and learn about all the fun ways to get their kids involved. Date TBA soon! Remember, you can always stay up to date with all things BJUSY throughout the entire year by visiting our new and improved website www.bethjudeausy.weebly.com, and you can sign up for membership by going to http://tinyurl.com/bethjudeayouth. Sisterhood We are very excited to be planning our new Sisterhood events for 2016-2017. We are looking forward to Learning and Laughter, Service and Friendship with our wonderful group of supportive and loving women in addition to the new friends we will meet this year. We will welcome you and make you feel comfortable and at home. Although we absolutely appreciate each and every membership dues donation, the best way to feel a part of Sisterhood is to attend an event or meeting. What you’ll receive in return is being a part of a group of women who want to gain new friendships while treasuring old ones, help support Beth Judea and our community and BE A PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER! Our Rummage Sale will be held Sunday, August 7th from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. Rummage Sale drop off begins Sunday, July 31st thru Thursday, August 4th until 3 pm. We appreciate the many wonderful items our synagogue members donate each year to the sale. We couldn’t do it without you! Please let us know if you’d like to volunteer to help the day of the sale or help sort during the week prior. We’d love to have you.. Please contact Sharon Harris, our Rummage Sale chair, with questions or the desire to help out. The next board meeting will be Tuesday, August 9th at 8 pm at Beth Judea. The meetings are open to everyone. If you’re interested, please come by.
August 16th at 8pm, Scott Turk, Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney, will be returning to talk about “Internet/Cyber/On-line Safety issues.” It should be a very interesting and timely topic. Scott is an excellent speaker and deals with these issues in his work for the state. Please be on the lookout for an invitation to our Sisterhood Membership Dinner, which will be held on Wednesday evening August 31st. There is no cost to attend the dinner for paid up Sisterhood members, and this will be a wonderful evening. We are having an interesting speaker, Sue Lewis, whose topic is “Bubbe Meises” and will be collecting food for the Ark food pantry in Northbrook. Please contact our Sisterhood membership VP, Debbie Limer, with any membership questions or to join Sisterhood. If you have any questions, ideas or suggestions, we’d be thrilled to hear from you! BETH JUDEA COMMUNITY NEWS Camp Ramah Calls: BJMC Answers!! In mid-June, Rabbi David Soloff of Camp Ramah Wisconsin called Rabbi Pivo, to commiserate that this year Camp Ramah was faced with a dilemma. So many subsidized campers, girls/women and foreign staff members would be part of the Camp Ramah community and without their own sets of tefillin, and this summer, Ramah simply had no inventory of extra tefillin left or the budget for correcting the situation. At least 12 sets were going to be needed for the summer. That day, Rabbi Pivo contacted Orin Rotman of our CBJ Men's Club, and Orin put the BJMC Mitzvah Machine into high gear. After contacting the CBJ Men’s Club board, calls and emails flew around to Rabbi Soloff of Ramah, Rabbi Chuck Simon of international FJMC and to Norwin Merens, president of Midwest Region FJMC. Within the week, BJMC had arranged 9 sets of tefillin to be loaned to Ramah immediately and had met in person with the full Midwest Region FJMC board. The result was a tremendous outpouring of support whereby BJMC secured commitment to purchase tefillin at cost from FJMC, get the delivery charges donated, and then secured donations from Beth Judea Men’s Club, Midwest Region FJMC, and from various individuals including Brian and Natalie Gurin, Judy and Glenn Goldstein, Rick and Barbara Kavitt, Orin and Denise Rotman, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Redfern, and from Rabbi Pivo and Hazzan Weisberg. In all, within 10 days of the request donations had been secured and 15 sets of new tefillin were on their way to Camp Ramah. For this BJMC is so appreciative and extends its sincerest thank you. But wait, that is only half the story. In exchange for the donation and loan of tefillin BJMC got a commitment from Camp Ramah that this could not end as a passive donation Mitzvah. We first got a commitment that Camp Ramah would immediately prepare an arts and crafts
The Word - August 2016
educational program and make decorative bags for each of the new sets and talk with the kids about beautifying sacred objects. But much more importantly Camp Ramah accepted our help in setting up on-site educational seminars for the Camp Ramah campers and staff about the mitzvah and marvelous opportunity the mitzvah entailed. Of special focus was reaching out to the future leadership of Conservative Judaism, and especially the female community at Camp Ramah, as to the opportunity our Jewish women have to participate fully in this wonderful, prayer enhancing ritual. On Tuesday, July 12, 2016, after a 6 hour drive up to beautiful Conover, Wisconsin, Orin Rotman, Norm Kurtz, and Evan Rumack arrived Tuesday evening in time to see the all-Hebrew 7th grade rendition of the play "Willie Wonka,” and then launched into 4 seminars between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. On Tuesday evening an intense staff only seminar was conducted with the staff of the 11th grade girl's section and then with some of the 7th grade combined program staff. Then on Wednesday morning Norm, Orin, and Evan put on three separate editions of the "World Wide Wrap" program for the 7th and 8th graders. After an exhaustive but invigorating 18 hours, with our mitzvah work of the day accomplished, Evan not only chauffeured Norm and Orin from and back to Chicagoland but provided the additional mitzvah of transporting one of the Ramah staff back for the sole purpose of allowing the pick-up at Midway Airport of one camper to enter the Camp Ramah Tikvah program.
CBJ Men’s Club so deeply appreciates the quick response of all involved that allowed our club to immediately do a mitzvah project with hopefully lasting positive results. Thanks to all.

Men’s Club Ladies and gentlemen of Beth Judea, I am no longer the presumptive nominee, but now president of Congregation Beth Judea’s Men’s Club. My name is Jerry Sakol, and I am honored to hold such a title. If you are reading this, you are probably not my main targeted audience. I am hoping to reach all those who never read the Word. If you know of anyone who would benefit from an association with a fine group of men, please know we are ready and eager to have them join us. Recently, I was given an article to read from the Tuesday, June 28 The New York Times written by Jane E. Brody titled “The Challenges of Male Friendships.”. It spoke of men who enter retirement and feel lost and disenfranchised. Most men feel it is unmanly to share emotions and issues that they find troubling, unlike women who are more apt to form close bonds with one another. Statistically, men who do develop and maintain a close circle of friends can extend their life expectancy by up to 22%. The good news is, our Men’s Club can offer you a wide variety of important social and spiritual events and activities to fill your life with meaning and purpose. Our entire calendar year is full of a wide range of opportunities to build friendships and bonds that will spark thought provoking, socially elevating engagement with a fine group of men. We eat, drink, laugh, schmooze, and have a great time together. The Jack Rizman Memorial golf outing is August 28th. We currently are sponsoring two softball teams that are actually doing quite well, and we hope to make the playoffs. We have a World Wide Wrap where we help our youth and
The Word - August 2016
adults understand the meaning of tefillin. We have Men’s Club Shabbatot, where you can participate in Hebrew or English. We host Hearing Men’s Voices events where we can freely talk about sensitive issues in a safe closed environment. There’s Tap the Torah, Steak and Scotch in the Sukkah, Moo and Brew (beer and burgers), just to mention a few. One particularly compelling mitzvah that happened last month was a long distance deed of loving kindness orchestrated by our own Men’s Club. Rabbi Soloff of Camp Ramah Wisconsin asked for some assistance in getting tefillin for the young campers. Orin Rotman, Norm Kurtz, and Evan Rumack took a took a 51/2 hour drive on Tuesday, July 12 to meet with the youth to show them how to properly put on these tefillin. Yashir Koach to these dedicated men who give their time, expertise, and heartfelt humanitarian spirit in the service of others. I can honestly say that being among men like Orin, Norm, and Evan and the other (too many to list here) truly dedicated members of Beth Judea’s Men’s Club has made me a better human being. Beside having a great time with some great guys, anyone would find time spent with us will be a fulfilling and rewarding part of life, and I encourage all you other good men out there to join us in our goal to promote leadership, innovation, and community.
Jerry Sakol Men’s Club President

INTERFAITH COUNCIL News from the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council I want to thank all of the volunteers, walkers, and donors to the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council’s “i-walk against hunger” which took place on Sunday, June 26, 2016. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to donate $1,600.00 to each of our four food pantries located at Congregation Beth Am, St. Mary Parish, Kingswood Methodist Church, and St. Alphonsus. In addition, we experienced a wonderful sense of community gathering together at St. Mary Parish, walking to Hope Lutheran Church, then sharing treats and enjoying entertainment, and finally returning to St. Mary Parish.
Our volunteers will be heading soon for a service trip to Detroit on July 20-24th. There participants will help frame homes under the auspices of the Cass Community Social Services for homeless persons. We have our next food drive at National Night Out at Willow Stream Park (651 Old Checker Road) in Buffalo Grove on August 2nd. While you are enjoying the free food, entertainment and giveaways, please remember those less fortunate and bring a nonperishable food item. All our food donations remain in the community. Our table will be at the entrance to the park near the parking lot and playground. Donations may be made directly to: Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council 1282 Green Knolls Drive Buffalo Grove, IL 60089 For more information on any of our programs please contact:
