HIGH HOLIDAY INFORMATION HIGH HOLIDAY TICKETS and SCHOOL INFO PICKUP To expedite the distribution of High Holiday tickets and school admit cards, congregants are required to pick up their High Holiday tickets and school assignments in person at the synagogue office.

Tickets and school assignments will be available for pick-up beginning Monday, August 20, 2018. Packets can be also picked up during regular weekday office hours: Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm and on Fridays from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm.

Should you need special arrangements please call Lisa at the synagogue office at 634-0777.

Tickets cannot be released unless 1/3 of dues and fees for the fiscal year 2018/19 and all prior dues are paid, unless you are on Visa/MC or on a payment plan approved by the Finance Committee.

SIDNEY MATHIAS CBJ PRESIDENT

As I start my second year as your President at Congregation Beth Judea, I can hear the excitement brewing. Our new clergy have already made their positive impact at CBJ. Let us welcome Rabbi Morris Zimbalist and his wife, Alison, and their children, Zachary and Evelyn, and Hazzan Gil Ezring to our CBJ community. If you have not yet met our new clergy, please take the opportunity to meet them at our Shabbat Under the Stars BBQ and Service on August 17th. You can also watch them on several videos on the CBJ Facebook page. Their last video has over 5000 "hits." I have been stopped by many congregants and non-congregants who have expressed their excitement about our new clergy.

On August 5th and 6th, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, our Sisterhood is holding their Annual Rummage Sale. Drop-offs are at the synagogue starting on Sunday July 29th through Thursday, August 2nd.

Volunteers are needed to help sort during the drop off week. Please see the details in your weekly CBJ email.

On Wednesday, August 15th at 8:00 pm, StandWithUs is holding a workshop on "The ABCs of the BDS Movement." It is a must event, especially for students who will be going to college campuses this fall and their parents. You need to find out what the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement is doing in their efforts on our campuses to marginalize and eventually eliminate Israel.

This event is for the community and is sponsored by the CBJ Israel Committee. Please RSVP to Lisa Neiman at lneiman@bethjudea.org, or call her at the office at 847-634-0777.

On Friday, August 17th, Shabbat Under the Stars will be held at JCC Elaine Frank Apachi Day Camp. More information can be found in this issue of the word.

On Sunday, August 19th , our annual Block Party will be held at Twin Creeks Park in Buffalo Grove at 11:30 am. Lunch will be available, and we will have our annual USY vs Men’s Club softball game.

On Sunday, August 26th at 10:00 am, the Men's Club is hosting the 23rd Annual "Dr. Jack Rizman Memorial Golf Outing." It will be located at the Buffalo Grove Golf Club at 48 Raupp Blvd. in Buffalo Grove. Please see all the details and the registration form in your weekly CBJ email or contact the CBJ office.

As you know the High Holidays are earlier this year. I appreciate all our members past support for our congregation. Please register your membership on-line to show your continued support for CBJ. As a reminder, Book of Remembrance forms are due on August 10th, and you can pick up your High Holiday tickets and school assignments on August 20th.

As we all know, there was a devastating condo fire recently in Prospect Heights. We at CBJ want to help the victims of this tragedy. Residents of the buildings lost everything. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them. I understand the victims have received enough clothing and other items from the generosity of the community and would prefer gift cards. We will be notifying our congregants how they can help the victims.

B’nei Mitzvah Bios With much pride and love, Harrison Reinstein will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, August 25, 2018.

Harrison is an 8th grade honor roll student at Daniel Wright Junior High School.

Harrison loves basketball, volleyball, and just about anything sports related. He presently enjoys playing volleyball for the Daniel Wright Trojans. Harrison has a genuine love for family, friends, learning, and life in general.

Harrison took his love of sports to a new level by choosing the Sports Shed to be the focus of his Mitzvah Project. He collected new and gently used sports equipment that will be sent to inner city schools and after school clubs, allowing them to have the opportunity to enjoy sports as much as he does.

Joining Harrison on his special day are his proud parents, David and Michelle Reinstein, siblings Paige and Arielle, and grandparents Marilyn and Joel Levin and Michael and Debby Reinstein, as well as friends and relatives from near and far.

Harrison would like to thank Hazzan Weisberg and Andrea Dickson for all their kindness, and dedication in helping Harrison prepare for his special day. Much thanks as well to Rabbi Zimbalist, Hazzan Ezring, Rabbi Pivo, Anna Besser, and all of Harrison's teachers for guiding and instructing him over the years in preparation for this important milestone.

Dylan Alec Tehrani, an eighth grader at Hawthorn Middle School South in Vernon Hills, will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, September 1, 2018.

Ever since Dylan took to the stage for the first time in a production of “Gulliver’s Travels,” he has loved the theater. He has been in about a dozen shows over the years and has developed his acting chops in musicals and plays such as “The Jungle Book,” “Lion King,” “Grease,” and “High School Musical.”

Dylan has also starred as Horton the Elephant in “Seussical the Musical,” the Beast in “Beauty and the Beast,” and Michael Banks in his school’s production of “Mary Poppins.”

Besides theater, Dylan is active in school government. He was a senator for his class last year and was voted to be in charge of the school store this year. He also participates in choir and has attended We Day for the past couple of years. Over the summers, Dylan loves his time at Camp Chi, and he recently returned from a trip to Boston with his Nana and Papa.

For his mitzvah project, Dylan wanted to give back to Reach Rescue, a local shelter where his family recently adopted a puppy named Oreo. Dylan made ropes for the puppies to chew on and will donate some of his bar mitzvah money to the shelter.

Dylan would like to thank his tutor, Kim Abern, for helping him learn his Torah and Haftorah portions, and he is excited to be the second bar mitzvah that Rabbi Zimbalist and Cantor Ezring officiate at Beth Judea. He would also like to thank his Mom and Dad, James and Robin Tehrani, his sister, Amelia, his grandparents, and the rest of his family, as well as all his Hebrew school teachers for all of their support and guidance over the years.

Religious Education When students return to the classroom in the fall, they will be taking part in the deeply rooted Jewish tradition of kehillah, or community. It all began at Mt. Sinai when the Israelites united in Anna Besser their commitment to each other Education Director and to God. The descendants of that kehillah at Mt. Sinai have created Jewish communities all over the world to provide for the spiritual and social needs of Jews everywhere. But what is a kehillah? The definition of kehillah is community, but that doesn’t only apply to Jewish communities. It’s also about the various communities we are a part of - school, clubs, summer camp, sports teams, service community group, or even a social network.

Any group of people united around a common goal or belief is a kehillah. By attending religious school, our children become members of many kehillot—their group of friends, class, grade, youth group, and/or b’nei mitzvah group—within the larger synagogue community.

Youth WHAT’S UP IN THE WORLD OF OUR YOUTH???

Camp – Camp – Camp ... And Now We’re Back!!!

That’s right friends... the BJUSY you know and love is back for another raucous year. We are returning to you with fresh faces and expanded programming. The fun all begins August 19th with our annual USY vs. Men’s Club softball game and BBQ at the amazing Beth Judea Block Party. Be sure to join us there as we kick off another great year!!! We will follow that up with our second annual Back to Camp Pray and Play around the bonfire on Friday, August 24th and a joint CBJ Youth and Hebrew school kickoff event featuring Ben’s Amazing Balloon Show on Sunday, August 26th. Our Tuesday lounge nights then kick-off on Tuesday, August 28th with mini golf. With all the fun events throughout the summer with Rabbi Zimbalist and Cantor Ezring, I can’t wait for the school year to begin and for more people to get to know our incredible new clergy members.

Over the past month, in addition to spending time with our new clergy, I once again had the pleasure of visiting our CBJ youth and teens at various Jewish day and overnight camps across the Chicagoland and Wisconsin areas. I had an AMAZING time!!! It is hard to describe the feeling that I get inside when I enter one of these camp communities. It is one of those warm fuzzy feelings that permeate throughout your body. I find it impossible to hold back a smile when I enter one of these Jewish camps.

After my camp visit last year, I wrote about how the feeling of being “at home” is what makes camp so special. This year solidified that notion that we have built as a CBJ youth department mirrors that same feeling. As I walked into each camp, I could see, hear, feel, and experience the sense of comradery among the campers. I could tell the pride that each camper felt in “their” camp. They thought about the camp as an extension of themselves and as belonging to them. When talking to one camper at Ramah overnight camp, she specifically described it as being home. I spoke to another camper about it

at Camp Chi, and she talked about not wanting to even know what day it was because she didn’t want to have to think about the idea of leaving camp. Each camper I spoke with beamed when they talked about the things that they did at their camp. They were truly excited to show me around and point out everything about their camp that makes it special. In the end, it is that exact feeling that these campers have that makes going to a Jewish camp special. That special exciting home feeling is the same one our kids share about going to USY programs at the Youth House.

This year we will offer programs that cater to the artists, the athletes, the techies, the board gamers, the writers, the readers, the adventurers, and the social butterflies. We will have programs that will thrill, educate, scare, enlighten, surprise, excite, and so much more. The only way, however, for our programs to do any of that is for you to help get people to them.

Send us your sons, your daughters, your sisters, your brothers, your nieces, your nephews, and all your grandchildren!!! We will make believers out of all of them.

It’s SISTERHOOD RUMMAGE SALE TIME!! Yep, Sunday, August 5th is the day our Beth Judea Sisterhood’s rummage sale. Rummage drop off starts on Sunday, July 29th. So, if you’re thinking of getting rid of your gently used clothing and household items, please consider donating them to the rummage sale. And, we not only want your rummage, we want YOU to join in the fun. Please plan to help us with the sorting and distribution of all the goodies people will be dropping off. In fact, you would be very surprised to discover how many items still have price tags attached to them. Yes, you could consider these items NOT gently used, but NEVER used!

And we’re talking some designer stuff too! If you’ve wanted to get more active in Sisterhood, this is a great way to get your toes wet. Think about helping during the week and/or on the day of the sale. It’s easy-peasy, AND you’ll have FUN! As the first order of business in my new role as Men’s Club President, I want to thank Jerry Sakol, the outgoing President, for his outstanding leadership these past two years. He leaves some immensely big shoes to fill; he has been both a helpful mentor and inspirational role model. With his able assistance, along with the guidance from all the other past presidents we are blessed to have play active roles in the Men’s Club, I will hopefully be able to get the job done.

These are certainly momentous times for Beth Judea. The synagogue celebrated its 50th Anniversary in May with a very successful event attended by over 250 people. On July 1 we welcomed our new clergy team of Rabbi Morris Zimbalist (and family) and Hazzan Gil Ezring.

Their leadership will help us usher in a new era and lay the foundation for our shul’s next 50 years! At the same time, we bade farewell to Rabbi David Klatzker and his wife Randy. We owe them a deep sense of gratitude for ably leading us through a difficult year that ended brightly with the exciting prospect of new beginnings.

On a much smaller scale, the Men’s Club also changed leadership. Ably assisting me in the coming years are: Rob Lipka, Executive Vice President and Treasurer; Allen Harris and Steve Limer, Vice Presidents for Programming; Jerry Sakol, Ritual Vice President; Brandt Rosen and David Granoff, Vice Presidents for Membership & Communication; Alan Friedlander, Secretary; Sandy Ramras, Lieberman Center Volunteer Coordinator; and acting as Directors at Large Orin Rotman, Mischa Schlichting, Norm Kurtz, Fred Rabinowitz, Evan Rumack, Jerry Sakol, Sandy Victor, Eric Yegelwel, Louis Rabin, and Craig Cohn. STEAK & SCOTCH IN THE SUKKAH SEPTEMBER 23: This is probably one of the most beloved and well attended events of the year. Great food, excellent and sometimes unique adult beverages, interesting people, and scintillating conversation all combine to make this a don’t miss date!

HEBREW LITERACY I - STARTING ON OCTOBER 9: A wonderful and easy to follow 13-week class taught by Eric Yegelwel and Jerry Sakol to either refresh your Hebrew reading skills or start you on the path to becoming a more proficient Hebrew reader. This class helps make all worship services more meaningful.

In closing, I’d like to tell you a little about myself and in the months ahead a different Men’s Club member will be similarly featured. My wife Jean and I have been Beth Judea members for over 30 years. I recently completed a 3 year term on Beth Judea’s Board of Directors; I also served on the Facilities Committee and continue to serve on the Finance Committee. Our four grown daughters and one grand-daughter all regrettably live out of state. I retired from a banking career in 2010 at the height of the financial crisis and have been happily retired ever since. My main hobbies are gardening and traveling as much as possible. Last year Jean and I successfully finished a multi-year goal of visiting all 50 states.

Interfaith Council News from the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council

We welcome our new members of the Interfaith Council: Rabbi Morris Zimbalist of Beth Judea, Cantor Gil Ezring of Beth Judea, and Father Joseph N. Le of St. Alphonsus Liguori.

Thank you to all of you who participated in the “Stamp out Hunger” program sponsored by the US Postal mail carriers on May 12, 2018. The non-perishable food items donated were distributed to our food pantries located at Beth Am, St. Mary Parish, and Kingswood Methodist Church.

Also, a big thank you to all who participated in our 5th annual i-walk against hunger on Sunday, June 24, 2018. We collected over $7,000.00 in corporate and individual donations which went directly to our four local food pantries. This walk was so successful due to the community working together as coordinators, walkers, donors, and volunteers. A special thanks to the members of St. Mary Parish, who hosted registration and set up, and the members of Hope Lutheran Church, who hosted our midway reception.

5th annual service trip to Detroit on August 1-5, 2018. Volunteers will work with Cass Community Social Services to repair, maintain, and build facilities to benefit the hungry, homeless, and unemployed.

Our growing interpretive minyan (prayer group) is focused on building community by enjoying a passionate, meaningful, and dynamic Shabbat morning experience. We are innovative, creative, and different from the traditional service.

We are friendly and welcoming to all. Being nonjudgmental and accessible, we are interested in creating a meaningful spiritual community where joyful prayer and spirited Torah discussion is experienced, accompanied by camaraderie and friendship.

Join us for prayer/discussion/ learning and stay after services for Kiddush/lunch with the entire Congregation.

LIFE IN ISRAEL THE GOODMAN’S BLOG Howie and Suzanne Goodman were valued members at Beth Judea until they decided to make aliyah in 2009.

We have a group of congregants who have been trained or are professionals who would be able to provide a brief consultation with you in order to refer you on for more in-depth assistance. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance.

If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records.
