Rabbi's Reflections I’d Like To Be a Maccabee! It’s Hanukkah time again. Soon the lights of the hanukkiah will grow brighter each night, as we commemorate the victory of the few over the many, the fight for the freedom to live as Jews, and the courage that it took to turn back to a sacred tradition. As in the Maccabees time, the Jewish people are a small minority in America, valiantly trying to maintain our distinctive beliefs and practices in a time of diminishing belief and lessening of religious ritual. The Maccabees were not the totally virtuous figures we sometimes imagine them to be. The early rabbis were not big fans of theirs, for example, for a variety of reasons. But we can still admire and find inspiration in their devotion to God and their miraculous deliverance by God. They fought for Judaism, and they celebrated their victory by reasserting the primacy of God in their lives. The Maccabees teach us that sustaining Judaism must be our primary task, that it is a task which takes tremendous effort, and that the effort does not come without a cost. Like the Maccabees, we face the challenge of sustaining Judaism in a harsh environment. American Jews do not suffer the active antagonism of non-Jews; our battle is not against the imposition of paganism but rather the lure of non-belief, non-connection, and the lack of communal connection that has become common across American society. The Jewish community is not immune to those trends, but we do know how to fight them.

Forward

First, we must see ourselves as having a responsibility to one another. Kol Yisrael aravim zeh lazeh we say, all the people Israel are connected to one another. Those of us already part of a synagogue family must work to create a home for those who are not and then bring them home. That means ensuring that our services, programs, and educational system are of high quality and are accessible to all. Second, we must commit ourselves to a life of learning, celebration, and comfort by taking part in serious study and being personally present in the life cycle events of our synagogue family. Finally, we have to fund our shul at a level that will not only pay our bills month to month, but which will also establish a future for our children and those yearning for a synagogue home. The Maccabees fought with the sword, spear, and arrows; we will fight with engagement, caring, and dollars. I call on every Beth Judea family to be a Maccabee by taking part in the Me’ah Campaign to reach our goal of a $3 million dollar endowment in 2016. Call me to find out how to help; no one can win the battle for our future alone, but we will succeed only when every one of us joins that battle. You can sponsor a section of the haftarah scroll we will dedicate this spring, sponsor a space in the building, or simply add your name to the dozens of others who have committed to building the future now. I need your help to fight the modern equivalent of a battle for Judaism’s future. Join me in that fight so that others in the future will look back at our time as one when we lit the fire and brightened Jewish lives for generations to come. Rabbi Jeff Pivo

President’s Message It is hard to believe that I have served as either the Executive Vice President or as your President for thirty months. The time has gone time by very quickly. There have been more than a few frustrating moments, and at times, I wished I could have made some of the problems disappear, but for the most part the rewards of leading the congregation have far-out weighed the frustrations. ARNIE GOLDBERG CBJ PRESIDENT

First and foremost, getting to know so many additional congregants on a personal level has been extremely rewarding. Congregants I had seen only occasionally have become close friends. We have shared simchas,

family stories, and life events. Being the leader of the congregational trip to Israel in October of 2014 was clearly the highlight of the last thirty months. I had previously been to Israel several times; however being with fellow congregants enhanced my experience far beyond my expectations. I never realized how difficult it is to run a congregation: to balance the budget, to make certain we are prepared for every holiday, to assure that our school and youth programs function in the most efficient manner, and to let each congregant know they are valued. None of this could be accomplished without our clergy, our professional staff and their individual staffs, our executive committee, our Board of Directors, and all our volunteers. I want to thank each and every one of them and ask each of our congregants to do the same whenever they are in the building. Recently Rabbi, Hazzan, Lisa, and I attended the USCJ convention in Schaumburg. We had the opportunity to exchange ideas and learn new concepts from other Jewish leaders from all of North America. I attended six different sessions that dealt with: immunity to change, building your endowment through planned giving, how to engage millennials in our kehilla, and empty nester engagement. Additionally, I attended two highly relevant workshops on the impossible task of Jewish leadership, and financial sustainability. Rabbi, Hazzan, and Lisa, and I hope to share and implement some of the new creative concepts in our Congregation. I hope everyone had a very happy Thanksgiving celebration with their family and friends and took time to be grateful for those significant things we value. The 25th of Kislev (December 7th) marks the first the first day of Hanukkah, and I want to wish everyone a very happy Hanukkah. May the light of the candles bring happiness to you and your families. Arnie Goldberg President Congregation Beth Judea

HANUKKAH xHanukkah Blessings for 5776 Each winter we light the Hanukkiah for eight nights, remembering the miracle of the oil in the ancient Temple and the miracle of the Maccabees’ victories. Hanukkah begins on the 25th of Kislev (the night of Dec. 6 this year); we light the shamash first, recite the three blessings below, then use the shamash to light one candle on the far right of the Hanukkiah. Each night we add one additional candle, corresponding to the day of Hanukkah. While candles are placed on the right side, they are customarily lit left to right, giving that day’s candle the honor of being lit first. After the first night we recite only the first two blessings. Blessings:

Men’s Club By now you should have already received Hanukkah candles from Men’s Club. These candles are packed in dark bluegray bags and were placed hanging on your front door. Men’s Club distributes Hanukkah candles to the members of Congregation Beth Judea every year. Not only are these candles manufactured in Israel but they are produced in Sderot. Sderot you may recall is the rocketbattered city in Israel that is less than a mile from Gaza. The city has been an ongoing target of rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip since 2001. Not only do the contributions we receive for the candles help us to support youth activities including purchasing Siddurim for the Aleph class and providing support to synagogue youth groups, they also help to provide much needed cash into the local economy of Sderot. Please send your donations to Men’s Club so that we can continue to support these youth activities and show solidarity with the people of Sderot. The Men’s Club FJMC Sefer Haftarah Shabbat was held on November 21. Thank you to Louis Rabin for coordinating the service and yasher koach to all those who participated. Men’s Club commitment to our synagogue was demonstrated once again by our volunteers who painted the conference room. Thank you to Craig Cohn, Sandy Victor, Evan Rumack, and Sandy Ramas for their help. A special note of gratitude to both Ron Friedman and Jerry Sakol whose extraordinary efforts transformed the conference room to a place we can be proud of.

Men’s Club The Adult Hebrew Literacy One class will be graduating on Friday night December 11. Although we had a very small class this year as compared to last year, the student worked just as hard over the twelve-week course. This is an extraordinary commitment to further one’s Jewish education. Please show your support and attend services on Friday night December 11. Both Men’s Club and Rabbi Pivo have recently sponsored Fred Rabinowitz (Men’s Club Past President and recent CBJ VP Programming) to attend an FJMC Keruv training program in Chicago. Many if not most people in Conservative/Masorti congregations have an intermarried family member. Unfortunately, intermarried families who chose to affiliate predominately choose Reform congregations where outreach programs are more common and synagogue policies are more appealing. We need to changes this while understanding that interpretation of Jewish law is the province of our Rabbi and that the objectives of Keruv do not include changing ritual practice. The FJMC Keruv Initiative serves the needs of our congregations in several ways. Keruv

programing provides opportunities for congregants to explore issues relating to intermarriage in a safe and supportive environment. The establishment of a synagogue Keruv Committee fosters a culture change which makes the congregation more appealing to potential members with diverse backgrounds. As Rabbi Charles Simon, FJMC Executive Director expressed it “If we are concerned with the future of Conservative Judaism and fail to act proactively, then our movement will be condemned to a diminishing future.” The FJMC Keruv program recognizes intermarriage as a reality that congregations must confront as we face the future. We look forward to hearing what Fred has learned and how we can make Congregation Beth Judea an even more welcoming synagogue community. On behalf of Beth Judea’s Men’s Club, I wish you all a very Happy Hanukkah. May the light of the candles help brighten your homes on this joyous holiday.

Eric Yegelwel

BJMC Man of the Year Be sure to congratulate Orin Rotman who has been named CBJ Men’s Club 2016 Man of the Year. Orin joined Congregation Beth Judea in 1986 even before he had closed on his house in Buffalo Grove! Orin has been an active member of Men’s Club from the beginning. He has been a CBJ Men’s Club Board member and officer for years. He either participates in or leads almost every Men’s Club activity including the World Wide Wrap , Men’s Club Shabbat, Scotch and Steak in the Sukkah and Tap the Torah. Orin can be found on most shabbat mornings as Gabbai Rishon. He has served multiple terms as Congregation Beth Judea’s Vice President of Membership, Programming, Education, Ritual, Youth and Social Action. It is remarkable that Orin had not been selected for this honor years ago. It is well deserved and long overdue. Join us in honoring Orin by attending or purchasing an ad in the ad book at the Midwest Region FJMC Man of the Year Dinner which will be held on March 6, 2016. More information will be available soon. The selection of the Youth of the Year is still pending at the time of the writing of this column. The Men’s Club column in the next issue of the WORD will highlight the 2016 Youth of the Year.

However, membership in the MT Nesters for your first year is free if you are currently a member of Beth Judea. We are continuing to hold our monthly program/meetings on Sundays, usually in the afternoon, and sometimes outside of the synagogue. Our annual Hanukkah program for our members is set for December 20 (the first and seventh days of Hanukkah are reserved for family gatherings), and then we go on snowbird winter break until March. BJE Early Childhood Centers

Classes at the Board of Jewish Education Early Childhood Center at Beth Judea are well under way. We kicked off the school year with a Family Rosh Hashanah event featuring games, crafts, apple and honey tasting, and hearing Rabbi Pivo blow the shofar. After the Fall holidays, individual classes have been learning about their Jewish home, life cycle events, and nature explorations. Dreidles and hanukkiyot are now filling our classrooms as the children learn about Hanukkah and get ready for their class parties. Come and see what we’re all about! Registration for our 2016-2017 school year is under way. Schedule a visit to one of our classes: New Steps (parent/caregiver and toddler), More Steps (2 year olds), Kadima (3 year olds), and Pre-K, and learn about our amazing curriculum. Call us at 847-634-0363 to begin your child’s preschool journey.

YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE We firmly believe that reaching out to others benefits not only the recipient, but the person providing help as well. This is, without a doubt, a win-win situation for all involved. If you are interested in making a difference, please contact one of the Hesed (Caring) committee members below: Rabbi Pivo Ellene Lammers Wendy Wunsch Evan Rumack

Did You Know... Do you know of information that would be of interest to our congregants? If so, please let us know.

We Would Like To Know WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records. Please call the synagogue office with this information. Do not assume that someone else will have notified the synagogue staff.

HESED COMMITTEE LIFE IN ISRAEL THE GOODMAN’S BLOG Howie and Suzanne Goodman were valued members at Beth Judea until they decided to make aliyah in 2009. The Goodmans have agreed to provide us with a blog on their experiences as new olim in Israel. Though we continue to miss the Goodmans, we can all look forward to reading about their adventures in Israel through the blog. To learn more about the Goodman’s life in Israel .click here to share their experience.

An Important Announcement CONGREGATION BETH JUDEA HESED (CARING) COMMITTEE The Hesed committee would like to know if you have any difficulties/problems that you would like to discuss with a knowledgeable individual. We have a group of congregants who have been trained or are professionals who would be able to provide a brief consultation with you in order to refer you on for more in-depth assistance. We are also thinking about starting some support groups. We would like to know what you feel your needs are. Please email Ellene Lammers at elammers@comcast.net or call Rabbi Pivo. SHALVA “Its okay, the children aren’t effected” But what if you knew they were?

Did you Know……… SHALVA Collects Cellphones?

Shalva clients will often say that they can withstand their husband’s abuse as long as he never directs his anger toward their children. What many women don’t understand is that children are the silent victims of abuse and that they often repeat the behaviors they have seen.

For quite a few years now, Congregation Beth Judea has been generously collecting cell phones for SHALVA.

According to a recent study, over 90% of children are aware of domestic abuse in their home. These children are affected emotionally, cognitively, and physically. They are at great risk and often experience low selfesteem, shame, fear and guilt. Many distrust adults, fail to thrive or suffer from depression and anxiety. What can we do? The issue of domestic abuse is not just a women’s issue; it affects the entire family as well as our Jewish community. SHALVA offers free counseling to Jewish women who are or were in an intimate partner relationship. If you or someone you know needs our help, call 773-583-4673.

We thought you’d enjoy knowing a bit about how this process works. After we gather the phones you put into the collection box, we ship them to a recycling operation in Florida, Shelter Alliance . They pay us according to the “blue book”value of each phone. In processing the thousands of phones we send them every year, they wipe clean all your personal data and either refurbish your phones, recycle the parts or melt them down. Each year SHALVA receives around $40005,000 just by collecting your old or broken cellphones. All of these dollars go directly to help our clients. Recently Shelter Alliance has expanded their recycling program and now accepts Ipods, Ipads, and Readers. So, the next time you pass by the synagogue office and see the SHALVA collection box, think about all those old cellphones, ipads and ipods taking up space in your drawer or closet, and help us turn them into dollars for clients.

Upon three things the world is based: Upon Torah, Upon Divine Service, and Upon the Practice of Charity.

Cell Phone Drop-Off Box In Synagogue Office! Help domestic abuse victims by donating your old cell phones. Each phone raises money for domestic abuse crisis-counseling services in the Jewish community! There is a collection box in the synagogue office. The Word - December 2015
