Rabbi’s Reflections DEDICATION AND REDEDICATION During the time the Jerusalem Temple stood, its activities were accompanied by music and singing. Psalms and other Hebrew readings were sung by the Levites to heighten the drama of the priestly service to God and beautify it. This month, we have multiple connections to those ancient services.

That service will occur during Hanukkah, the celebration of the Rabbi Jeff Pivo rededication of the Temple in the 2nd century B.C.E. by the Hasmoneans. In the centuries since the fall of the Jews around the world will be marking Temple, music remained a central feature of Jewish prayer and culture. President’s Message I cannot believe it is already December 1st. Two thousand sixteen has gone by so quickly. We had a euphoric high, followed by a surprise ending to a very long Presidential election and a general concern for the divisiveness that may follow with the new administration. For those who lost loved ones during the past year, I express my condolences again. I realize how difficult it can be to be without someone you love at this time of the year. I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends. We all have much to be thankful for- not only on the fourth Thursday in November of the year, but on every day of the year.

ARNIE GOLDBERG CBJ PRESIDENT

On December 3rd, we will honor Hazzan Weisberg for his thirty years of tenure at CBJ. I remember the first services that Cantor lead, thirty years ago. He did a great job then and continues to perform at the same high standard. Thank you again, Hazzan, for thirty wonderful years. To the dinner and concert committee, thank you for all your hard work and extra effort. There was never a doubt that the committee would make this a huge success. I would like to offer my congratulation to Brad Finkel, a friend and fellow CBJ Board member. Brad has been appointed to replace Ron Levin as director of Camp Chi. Best wishes on your promotion Brad, we know you will do a great job. Lastly, 47 of our congregants and family will be traveling to Israel in the middle of December on the generational congregational trip. Four family members will become b’nai mitzvot during the trip. I wish everyone safe travels. I hope this congregational trip is as successful as the last one. I know everyone will find spirituality in Eretz Yisrael and will form friendships with their fellow travelers which will last forever. A healthy and happy holiday season to everyone, and for those who are traveling, travel safe and enjoy. Arnie Goldberg President Congregation Beth Judea

HANUKKAH xHanukkah Blessings for 5777 Each winter we light the Hanukkiah for eight nights, remembering the miracle of the oil in the ancient Temple and the miracle of the Maccabees’ victories. Hanukkah begins on the 25th of Kislev (the night of Dec. 24 this year); we light the shamash first, recite the three blessings below, then use the shamash to light one candle on the far right of the Hanukkiah. Each night we add one additional candle, corresponding to the day of Hanukkah. While candles are placed on the right side, they are customarily lit left to right, giving that day’s candle the honor of being lit first. After the first night we recite only the first two blessings. Blessings:

Religious Education Eight Day of Hanukkah…Ways to Make Your Hanukkah Brighter Day 1: Jewish Identity What if you had to hide your Jewishness? In Jerusalem under Greek rule, King Antiochus outlawed Judaism. Today, show your Jewish pride! Wear an Israelthemed T shirt, a Jewish star or h˙amsa necklace, a kippah, or a hat/button/sticker with Hebrew writing. Anna Besser Education Director

Day 2: Family The Maccabees worked together to fight for the rights of Jews, with Judah leading them all to an amazing victory. Show your family’s strengths with pictures. Find a frame and glue photographs of your family members all over the frame. Attach a ribbon to the back and display it with pride. Day 3: Dedication The Maccabees had to make the Holy Temple into a Jewish space again. You can show that your home or bedroom is a Jewish space. Hang a special handmade mezuzah on your doorpost. Day 4: Oil Today, candles – and electricity – provide a glowing light, but in Temple days, only pure oil was used to light the 7-branched menorah. If the light went out, there would be no Temple celebrations. Listen to “Light One Candle” and think about what the chorus “Don’t Let the Light Go Out” means. Write that line on a piece of paper and draw a picture of what that line means to you. Day 5: It’s a Miracle What is the miracle of Hanukkah? Is it that the oil lasted 8 days? Is it that the Maccabees were victorious over King Antiochus’s army? Is it both? Either way, the dreidel reminds us of a miracle. Its letters stand for Nes Gadol Haya Sham (A Great Miracle Happened There). Play a game or two of dreidel. All you need is a driedel, some candy or pennies, and the instructions.

Day 6: Jerusalem Can you tell the difference between scenes in Jerusalem, Israel and the United States? Test your instincts online with the game, Poh (Here) or Sham (There). Day 7: Festival of Lights Keep the glow of Hanukkah shining even in the dark. Using glow-in-the dark markers or paints on dark paper, draw pictures that will make you smile when you see them at night with the lights off. Day 8: Eight Each player gets 8 cards. The other cards go in a pile face down. Turn the top card over and put it next to the pile. The first player has to cover that card with one of the same suit or same number. If not, he/she has to take one from the pile. Take turns. Eights are wild, so the player decides the suit. To win, get rid of all your cards! -

When first reading the opening to this article many would believe that it would be about the most recent, incredibly divisive, election we just had. We all know that this election has brought about some incredibly harsh rhetoric on both sides of the aisle and awakened fear in many people. Additionally, there is real concern from our teens about what this election will mean for their futures. All that being said, I would like to focus on the reverse side of what this election has done. Recently on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and a number of other places, impromptu #bekind or #kindessmatters campaigns have been popping up. So much of the election season was filled with hate, bickering, anger, name calling, and vitriol. After such a bitter campaign season, it is difficult to sometimes detach from all the divisiveness and come back together as a country. I am by no means trying to explain that we should simply forget about everything that has happened, quite the contrary. I think that we need to battle the overt hate and bitterness with kindness. I recently faced a situation at the public school where I work. I was approached by an 8th grader who came in the day after the election upset, and he approached me very matter of factly to let me know that there was a good chance I may not see him anymore. When I asked him why he explained to me that he was Mexican, and that he is probably getting deported (he shared that his parents were not here legally even though he was born here). I found myself in a horrible situation of not necessarily being able to tell him that everything would be ok and that he would be just fine. I simply did not have that answer to give him. I found myself explaining to him how great of a young man he was and no matter what the situation, I was sure he would handle it in the best possible way and approach it with a positive attitude. My point by this story is not to try to take a stand when it comes to politics or even judge either side. I am also not trying to normalize a situation that is different than one faced in our country in my lifetime. Instead, I realized that we need to do more on the micro level within our own communities to spread kindness in the face of hatred and divisiveness. In the days since the election I have seen such an outpouring of positive messages and support for various groups and people by complete strangers. I have seen public schools welcome students in the doors with positive messages and words of encouragement. I have seen our own teens come together and discuss a very difficult time for them in a mature way and make promises to support each other no matter what. I have seen our teens transform a weekend shortly after the election into a place where everybody felt included and everybody felt welcomed. There is much more kindness in the world than hate. Our world is by no means as dark as what the last 18 months may have shown, and now, more than ever, is the time to show that to everybody.

Youth Is this really our country??? (continued) In the days since the election I have seen such an outpouring of positive messages and support for various groups and people by complete strangers. I have seen public schools welcome students in the doors with positive messages and words of encouragement. I have seen our own teens come together and discuss a very difficult time for them in a mature way and make promises to support each other no matter what. Our world is by no means as dark as what the last 18 months may have shown, and now, more than ever, is the time to show that to everybody. I urge each and every one of you to go forward and #bekind to all those around you and show everybody in your life, from your closest friends and families to the complete strangers that #kindness matters. Youth Special D’var Torah given by CHUSY President Liat Wasserman at the recent CHUSYfest convention: When I sat down to write this a week ago, I couldn’t help but wonder if I would be talking to constituents of a nation that had elected Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. I like to write my dvars [sic] about the present, about things that will be applicable to everyone right now, and this time is no exception. Yet, I realized that my instinct to talk about elections was very telling. This instinct is telling of the fact that I have really not focused on any other domestic issues lately other than elections, let alone focused on any foreign policy issues. And I am guilty, because any time I was asked about why I was supporting one candidate over the other I jumped to reasoning based for the most part upon heavily circulated quotes, scandals, and news headliners. I think it’s safe to say that I forgot to delegate some focus to the specific issues that matter, and act upon it. I think that many of us just wanted to do something this week. We wanted to yell at the TV screen. We wanted to protest. We wanted to call out any person on the side that wasn’t our own. However, it is my belief that at some point you have to stop shouting into the void that is Facebook and start evaluating your own biases. You have to use ethical reasoning to determine the next steps, to come to a realization about how YOU will actually change something beyond typing a rant or fuming any time you see an election map. This distinction, in essence, is what makes someone an activist as opposed to someone who demands change but won’t pursue it. In this week’s haftorah, it is said, “Now youths shall become tired and weary, and young men shall stumble. But those who put their hope in the Lord shall renew [their] vigor, they shall raise wings as eagles; they shall run and not weary, they shall walk and not tire.” Those who invest in the future are those who are ultimately successful, regardless of current circumstances.

To reflect on our convention theme, the late ‘60s was a time of great political division in the US, and overseas we were involved in a very complicated war. US citizens began to rise up when they didn’t support this war and had school walkouts, they started peace movements, they protested at the DNC. Concrete action was taken by those who were unhappy with the outcomes they had received, and those years ended up going down in history as one of the most influential time periods ever. 2016 will undoubtedly will go down the same way, too, and hopefully for the right reasons. Because beyond the elections, the world is a crazy place that needs crazy people like us to defend it. Only a few weeks ago, the president of the Philippines called for the execution of drug abusers in his country, saying that “If Germany had Hitler, the Philippines will have me.” If this should concern anyone, it should most definitely concern Jews who every year say never again. Ultimately, just like the people of the ‘60s, we should open our eyes to what is happening beyond what media popularizes as being important and beyond just presidential campaigns. We should work to change the bad not because of the party we are part of, or the red or blue we bleed, but because of our place as Jews and as people. Not everyone needs to take action in the same way or for the same reason, but I hope that everyone at least considers their place in a world where nothing is certain. I know that I have a long way to go, don’t worry. And if you’re afraid to be who you are right now, take a look around and realize that you have a room full of people who would love to give you a hug. Your feelings are valid, and I hope to see a world full of caring people like you one day. Shabbat Shalom.

Congratulations: BJUSY would like to extend a special congratulations to our very own youth committee member, Brad Finkel. Brad recently was promoted to the position of director of Camp Chi. He has served for a number of years as the Associate Director of Camp Chi, helping to improve the lives of a number of our youngest members at CBJ. Everyone in the BJUSY family would 20 like to extend a hearty mazel tov to Brad on a well-deserved promotion, and we look forward to many more years of the amazing impact he will make on our children and teens.

Sisterhood Heidi and I hope that all our Beth Judea sisters enjoyed some special family time and shared your gratitude for good health and friendship on Thanksgiving. We both appreciate your support and are grateful to serve this wonderful community! We want to take this opportunity to congratulate former Sisterhood president, Debbi Green, who recently finished the training to become a consultant and has been named a Vice President of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism, the international umbrella organization that supports Conservative Judaism, rabbinic and cantorial students, and the development of leadership skills, education and opportunities for all sisterhood members. She will be serving a three-year term. In November book club members who read Women Hold Up Half the Sky, visited the Illinois Holocaust Museum to view the current exhibit that highlights the plight of women around the world and the struggle for appropriate health care and equal education as well as the work being done to end all types of slavery. Joining the group was Karen Stramich, RN from Condell Hospital who is specially trained to help sexual assault victims. Karen spoke briefly at our November meeting. We learned that sex trafficking, slavery and abuse happens right in our own back yard. That is why services like SHALVA and WINGS are so important and need our support. Please remember to consider donating when making your yearend contributions! Looking forward to seeing you soon, Kitty and Heidi, your Sisterhood Copresidents Contact Kitty Hoffman mskitty.hoffman@gmail.com, or Heidi Sakol heidis121@yahoo.com for more nformation or to get involved.

Sisterhood

SISTERHOOD BOOK CLUB Thursday, December 15, 2016 – 7:30 pm

Come Join Us As We Discuss SHELTER US by Laura Nicole Diam

An inspirational novel about Jewish values and what it means to live with meaning, purpose, and compassion. Sarah Shaw is a lawyer-turned-stayhome-mom struggling to raise two Shelter Us young sons while grieving the death suggests that of an infant daughter. Judaism’s power is not in providing firm answers but rather in guiding us how to act while we are alive. Inspired by the Torah, one of the thirty-six parashiyot that include the directive “to take care of the stranger” & the strong connection with her late mother, who had modeled this value, Laura’s mother’s legacy spured her on helping develop the fabric of this novel.

While driving in Los Angeles one day, Sarah sees a homeless mother and child and makes it her mission to save them.

The daughter of a secular father and converted-Jewish mother, Sarah turns toward Judaism for guidance, much as she relied on Jewish rituals upon the sudden death of her mother years before. Recalling her mother's emphasis on "welcoming the stranger," Sarah is emboldened to approach the young homeless woman, despite her husband's admonition not to get involved.

Beth Judea Sisterhood Judaic Arts Program Design and craft a fused glass mezuzah Sunday, December 18, 2016 1:00-3:00pm Gallery's Choice Studio 926 Warren Ave. - Downers Grove, IL We will meet at Beth Judea at noon and car pool to the studio or you are welcome to meet us there. Online registration and prepay via a credit card by using the link below: Go to www.GallerysChoice.com Select MEETUPS AND GROUPS (top left) Select SISTERHOOD MEZUZAHS class Add the Mezuzah class to your "bag" Add the coupon code: MEZUZAH18 Then select shipping method: ONLINE/NO SHIPPING (price reduces to $20) Pay for the class. DONE! For questions, please email Hannah Whitney: Hannahswhitney@gmail.com

All the while, Sarah's son's questions about the death of his baby sister force Sarah to confront what she believes about God, death, and afterlife. In Sarah's lack of certainty, Shelter Us suggests that Judaism's power is not in providing firm answers but rather in guiding us how to act while we are alive. Shelter Us—its title taken from the Hashkiveinu prayer— expresses a mother's fervent longing that her children will be safe, despite the painful knowledge that there are no guarantees.

Book Discussion will be at Brenda Levin’s Home Please RSVP to brendaclevin@yahoo.com This event is open to Sisterhood and CBJ Members

Men’s Club Ladies and Gentlemen of Beth Judea, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our congregants who helped with the candle packing on Sun. November 13th. I would also like to tip my hat to the staff who took the time to get everything ready. A great amount of work was done by staff ahead of time allowing me to just show up and get things rolling. Thanks to our wonderful staff.

We have some important dates to remember this month:: 12-1-2016:

synagogue. This is actually one of my favorite activities connected to Men’s Club. If you you are interested, call me or Sandy Ramras for details. 12-24-2016

Hanukkah begins at sundown.

I am especially excited to attend the Cantor’s Concert this month. We will be able to honor a man who has brought great honor to our synagogue. For 30 years, he has been a shining light to all the people he has been in contact with. To me, he has been a great teacher of Hebrew chanting and meaningful prayers for over 20 years. It’s very likely that 90% of what I know and can do are because of him. He has elevated me musically, vocally, and spiritually to a level I could never have achieved without him. The only way I can ever repay all he has done for me is to fan that spark of humanity and ruach and hopefully inspire others to love Hashem. Thank you, Hazzan Weisberg for being my mentor.

I would like to close by wishing everyone a safe and happy celebration of “The Festival of Lights.” Happy Hanukkah everybody. May Hashem’s blessings touch you all. Jerry Sakol
