FROM THE RABBI OPTIMISM A congregant said to me: "Rabbi, you sure sound like an optimist. You seem to think that this congregation can overcome its challenges. I only wish I could believe you."
In our religious school, children receive individual attention. We provide a wide variety of adult educational opportunities. We have a talented staff.
In short, we have a lot to be proud of I responded with a classic Jewish as we enter our fiftieth year. joke. A Jewish optimist and a Jewish pessimist were sitting around talking. RABBI DAVID KLATZKER Of course, there is much work to be The Jewish pessimist turns to the done. Not everyone feels connected to the Jewish optimist and says: "Oy, it can't get any congregation; we need to make more of an worse for our people." The Jewish optimist effort to bring people together so they can turns to the Jewish pessimist, smiles, and get to know each other and draw strength says: "Sure it can!“ from one another. My hope is that CBJ will be known as a place where people really That's Jewish optimism. I know some connect with one another. Jewish "optimists" like that. But then I said to the congregant: Am I an optimist? I plead guilty as charged. In my experience it is optimism that gets things done. Optimism energizes people. But optimism is not the same thing as wishful thinking. When an optimist looks at a half-full glass, she knows that it is also half-empty. The difference is that she sees it as an opportunity for using available resources for introducing a preferred future. She thinks she can make a difference. We have many assets. Let’s hear it for our Youth program — USY International Chapter of the Year! We have an outstanding Men’s Club and Sisterhood. CBJ offers a warm And welcoming environment for prayer and life-cycle events.
This requires a different way of running the congregation. It is less about bringing energy to finding new ways to bring people to shul and more about refocusing the congregation’s life on listening, discerning, experimenting, and reflecting at the grassroots. I think a listening campaign is a more significant goal than aiming to "grow" the synagogue numerically. A larger synagogue will be of little value if its members do not find a sense of belonging. In other words, our glass is half-full of resources and half-full of space to fill. I look forward to starting to fill it with you. Best of Life, Rabbi David Klatzker

Two years ago, Congregation Beth Judea had one of the area's largest synagogue delegations to the AIPAC Policy Convention. It would be great if we could repeat this next year. The Conference will be held March 4-6 in Washington D.C. Please join our CBJ delegation and more than 18,000 other proIsrael activists, members of Congress, and countless Israeli and American policymakers and thought leaders for three of the most important jam-packed days impacting Israel’s future! You can choose from hundreds of informative sessions, and we will participate in the pro-Israel community's largest and most important advocacy day by meeting and discussing important U.S.-Israel issues with our Congressman and U.S. Senators. I hope that you will join Rita and me for this most important conference.

“A MORNING TO REMEMBER” – CBJ 50th ANNIVERSARY EVENT
A MORNING TO REMEMBER: SUNDAY, DECEMBER 3 Please mark your calendar for the CBJ “Morning to Remember,” which will be held Sunday, December 3, from 9AM -12PM, in the Lieberman Social Hall.
• 9AM – Breakfast in the Lieberman Social Hall • 10AM – Learn the history of Beth Judea and share stories of your personal involvement, no matter how long you’ve been here. Come eat breakfast and mingle with friends. Whether you are new at CBJ, or have been involved with the congregation your entire life, we want to hear stories about your time here. We will create three large timelines that will be hung on the walls of the Social Hall: significant events at CBJ from the present to the past; important happenings in the neighborhood and in the world around us; and milestones in your own personal life.
Information gathered at this event will help us tell the congregation’s story on our 50th anniversary. In addition, we will begin to identify those things that have made and continue to make CBJ a special community, so we can focus on the most life-giving aspects of our community as we move forward. We will conclude the morning by asking you: What are your wishes and hopes for our future as a congregation? To RSVP, please contact the office at cbjoffice@bethjudea.org There is no charge. Babysitting will be provided upon request. Teens are also welcome to join us. Please contact Lisa Neiman at lneiman@bethjudea.org or (847) 634-0777 if you need any special accommodations, including transportation, to participate in our program.

HANUKKAH xHanukkah Blessings for 5778 Each winter we light the Hanukkiah for eight nights, remembering the miracle of the oil in the ancient Temple and the miracle of the Maccabees’ victories. Hanukkah begins on the 25th of Kislev (the night of Dec. 12 this year); we light the shamash first, recite the three blessings below, then use the shamash to light one candle on the far right of the Hanukkiah. Each night we add one additional candle, corresponding to the day of Hanukkah. While candles are placed on the right side, they are customarily lit left to right, giving that day’s candle the honor of being lit first. After the first night we recite only the first two blessings.

SUPPORT BETH JUDEA BY PURCHASING GIFT CARDS
The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws. Historically, the Board of Directors of Congregation Beth Judea has sent shiva baskets to the immediate family of Board members; parents, spouses, siblings and G-d forbid, children. We would like to extend this gesture to the entire congregation.

Men’s Club Hanukkah Candles This year as in years past, Beth Judea Men’s Club delivered Hanukkah candles to help in your festive celebration. Within our community, one way we can keep a link between us is to light our candles that have all come from one common place and share in that ancient tradition together. Along with the candles was a donation envelope. The funds raised will go toward the purchase of Siddurim for the Aleph class and to support our youth groups (USY and Kadima). Please consider sending a donation to Men’s Club to help support these important programs and keep the spark of Jewish life and traditions glowing in the hearts of our children. On behalf of our Beth Judea Men’s Club, I would like to wish you and your family a safe, happy, and fulfilling holiday. Happy Hanukkah The Festival of Lights.

And you’ll be able to enjoy the company of our CBJ friends as we get together to learn from internationally-recognized thought leaders on the Middle East.

Religious Education Strength in the Hanukkah Story
Anna Besser Education Director
What is Strength? Strength is the capacity for endurance. It is support, firmness, and the power to resist force. While physical strength seems easy to measure and quantify, there are other types of strength we should explore. What makes a person feel strong? How do we build a sense of inner strength, self-esteem, and resilience? What is real strength?
There are times in our life when we need to access different types of strength. We use our inner strength to forge our identities. We use our emotional strength to express viewpoints and show vulnerability. We use our physical strength to help those around us – moving and doing what others may not be able to do. The Hanukkah story provides us with different understandings of what strength might mean: the physical strength of the Maccabees and the inner strength and resilience of those who stayed true to their convictions in the face of Hellenism. Throughout Jewish history, the story of Hanukkah has been interpreted differently, with different forms of strength being emphasized at different times. During the Talmudic era, rabbis shied away from the physical and military side of the story, focusing on the moral and spiritual lessons about hope and faith. During the rise of Zionism, early Zionists reclaimed the physical and military aspects of the story. As the early pioneers in Israel found themselves fighting to defend against attacks, they began to connect with the ancient Jewish fighters who stood their ground in the same place. Hanukkah is a time for accepting both the Maccabee and the rabbi within us, seeing them as different expressions of strength. In today’s age, Hanukkah primarily focuses on the celebration of human liberation and ultimately a victory to retain religious freedom. So, what does Hanukkah mean for us today? What models of strength in the story do we connect with? Is it the physical and military strength needed to overcome a seemingly more powerful enemy? Or the ability to retain individual character and inner strength against outside pressures? What type of strength is important for you? And lastly, who will you show our strength today?

Youth
WHAT’S UP IN THE WORLD OF OUR YOUTH??? Thank you!!! On Sunday morning, November 12th, 2017 our incredible group of BJUSY teens gathered at the Perlstein Resort at Camp Chi during the final day of CHUSYfest. We thought we were gathering to watch a pump up video for International Convention which will be hosted right here in Chicago over winter break. The video began by showing clips of USYers from all over the world talking about International Convention. Suddenly, however, the message changed. USYers in the video announced that they had a special announcement just for CHUSY region. It was then that things became a blur and came into focus all at the same time. The video began to announce that they were excited to announce that the winner of USY’s International Chapter of the Year was from right here in CHUSY region and that it belonged to Congregation Beth Judea BJUSY. The kids screamed and cried, and I can’t say I did any differently (you can check out the video yourself using the link below). Andy Bauman and Julie Marder came out from their hiding spot in the closet with a huge banner awarding BJUSY as the International Chapter of the Year. Additionally, we went on to find out that we had received top honors in three out of the five overall categories. BJUSY was named best of the best in overall programming excellence, religious education, and membership outreach along with being named overall best chapter in all of USY.
15
Youth This accomplishment is quite a testament to the never ending hard work of all our BJUSY members, staff, youth committee, and so many more. It would be impossible to thank all the people who helped make this possible but do know that we continue to appreciate the support we receive for our incredible youth group every single day. While this award is an amazing accomplishment (it is the highest possible honor that USCJ can bestow upon a single chapter), this in no way marks the end of our journey. The CBJ youth department aims to continue to bring the same strong effort that made this possible to all our age groups. We will continue to strengthen youth programming across the synagogue and help to grow CBJ as the vibrant, young, family oriented community that we all know that it is.
If you have not yet dipped your toe in the water and tried one of the youth programs that are available, we strongly encourage you to do so. Come check out what all the fuss is about and experience for yourself the power of CBJ youth! Men’s Club Ladies and Gentlemen of Beth Judea, There is still time to rsvp for the first annual Latke and Vodka event on Sat. Dec. 9th, which promises to be a wonderful and exciting event. Sponsored by Sisterhood and Men’s Club, we have fine spirits, designer latkes, and a great activity that will mystify and amaze you. If you haven’t already seen the flyer, you will not want to miss this one. Please see the December schedule below. Dec. 7th: Next Men’s Club board meeting Dec. 13th: Erev Hanukkah! Please celebrate The Festival Of Lights responsibly Dec. 16th: The next opportunity to assist the elderly at The Lieberman Center. This is a wonderful mitzvah to do during the holiday and every month. If you’ve never done so, you should really consider participating. It’s a very rewarding experience. I would also like to wish everyone a meaningful holiday to commemorate the victory of the Maccabees over tyranny.. I think the Menorah is one of the most recognizable symbols of our faith, and I’m sure most of us have only the fondest of memories concerning our family Hanukkiot. Those of us who are fearless and stay to fight thru the winter can take heart as the days begin to lengthen and spring pushes out the frigid temperatures to become the dominant season. Perhaps we’ll allow the snowbirds to come slinking back with their tans and summer clothes knowing we Midwestern stalwarts are made of much sterner stuff.
The Word - December 2017
I’d like to point out some upcoming events in the coming months: March 11th: is the Next Man of The Year, Youth of The Year Dinner. Our Honored MOY this year Is the most deserving Rob Lipka, whose contributions and hard work have been a tremendous asset to our Men’s Club and congregation. March 16th: Is our next Midwest Region Men’s Club Retreat, which has proven that it gets better every time by having increasing attendees. Guys, you are really missing out if you haven’t experienced one of these events. More info to follow. So, save the date! April 11th: Is Yom HaSoah. Our day to remember all our fallen martyrs who died too early at the hands of monsters. There are a few Hearing Men’s Voices events coming up. Dates to be determined, where you can safely talk with other men about concerns and troubles that we all face and think you may have nobody to open up to. Be sure to watch your email! Being in Men’s Club, and being associated with this grand group of great guys who give to the greater good, has been and is an uplifting experience that I wholly endorse. The comradery and friendships are only a part of what we are all about. Stop by sometime. That’s about all for now, safe travels to all, good health, and I’ll see you in shul.

INTERFAITH COUNCIL News from the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council by Joanne Dicker and Helene Fox, Beth Judea representatives to the Council We want to thank everyone who participated in the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council’s Thanksgiving Celebration held at Temple Chai on Sunday, November 19, 2017. A special thanks to Rabbi Klatzker, who gave the invocation, and Hazzan Weisberg, for composing and chanting, “A Prayer of Thanksgiving” with the choir. The celebration was a wonderful time to join with our neighbors in prayer, song and celebration. After the program, we socialized over home baked and donated pastries and drinks from Continental Restaurant, Deerfield’s Bakery, Leonard’s Bakery, Mariano’s, Market Square restaurant, the Original Bagel and Bialy, Shalom Bakery and Sunset Foods. Our left-over pastries were then donated to both the USO to give our servicemen and women a treat at O’Hare while they are travelling and Journey’s End.
Please remember the less fortunate who live in our community throughout the year. Donations may be made directly to: Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council 1282 Green Knolls Drive Buffalo Grove, IL 60089 For more information on any of our programs please contact: nwsinterfaith@gmail.com or by telephone at: 224-699-0386 or visit our website at: http://www.northwestsuburbaninterfaith.org or your council representatives: Joanne Dicker: joannedicker@comcast.net Helene Fox: helene125125@gmail.com
Our theme this year at the Thanksgiving Celebration came from Genesis 5:1-2: This is the story of the generations of humans; on the day that G-d created us, we were created in G-d’s image. May we remember at this time of year and hopefully, throughout the year, that we are all one people; we should care for all of our neighbors in need: the hungry, the weak, the cold, and the homeless. “May our observance of Thanksgiving inspire us with gratitude for the wondrous gifts that are ours, and fill us with the resolve to share them with those in need.” Happy Thanksgiving.

From The Editors In order for your article to be published in the next issue, we must have it at the synagogue by the 10th of the month! There will be no exceptions. This includes information on disk as well. We need your article as it is important to let the congregation know what your group is doing. Announcements should take the form of articles in The Word rather than separate flyers. The opinions expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Rabbi, Board of Directors or the editors.
