Rabbi's Reflections Jewish Values in an Election Year Between February and November, Americans in all 50 states will go to the polls to choose candidates for the presidency. Fifty times we will vote in primaries, and once in November we will choose a new leader for the country. Every citizen has the responsibility to vote for the candidates whose policies best represent our vision for the future. While Jews are a small minority of the total votes cast nationally, our voices continue to influence national policy in important ways. As rabbi, I cannot and should not tell anyone how to vote, what party to affiliate with, or which candidates should receive Jewish support. But I can remind our members of some of the values that have been consistent features of Jewish religious and communal life over millennia in the hope that those values will guide us in these important matters. Israel is at the top of many Jews’ concerns. Our connection to the land God promised to our ancestors has always been a Jewish concern, even prior to the creation of the state in 1948. For nearly 1900 years, the return of Jews to Israel was a feature of daily prayer, a sentiment at the heart of Jewish identity. In our time, when Israel is a free, strong, democratic state, our commitment has shifted from hoping for a return to ensuring Israel’s continuity. The value of supporting Israel should certainly inform how we vote. At a time when violence seems suffuse local, national, and world news on a daily basis, another Jewish value is an emphasis on
protecting human life and dignity. More than 30,000 Americans die every year due to gun violence, many of them suicides; mass shootings have become commonplace; around the world refugees flee war and persecution. Jews should be at the forefront of efforts to reduce these kinds of violence and to protect innocent lives. As a people we have often had to flee violence directed against us, we should be leading voices in creating safe havens for refugees. And in a century when our planet teeters on the verge of ecological catastrophe, the Jewish value of tending and caring for the earth is a message in desperate need. The Torah teaches us that our role is to take care of the land, sea, and air because we are God’s representatives on earth, inhabiting God’s creation. Where we despoil the earth we must repair it, cleaning up the mess we have made, and changing the systems that created the problems in the first place. There are many other values I could mention, but if these three – concern for Israel, protecting human life, caring for the environment – help us to choose wisely in the upcoming elections, our commitment to those values will have a real effect. America leads the world in many ways, and we should make these values a driving force in pushing our elected leaders to create a world that will fulfill our highest aspirations as both Americans and as Jews.

ISRAEL 2016 CONGREGATIONAL MULTI-GENERATIONAL TRIP
Multi-Generation Israel Trip RSVP's Due by Wednesday, February 3, 2016 To the entire Beth Judea community After a fantastic synagogue trip to Israel in 2014, we wanted to schedule another visit dedicated to the needs of families with children. We are now in the final phase of making that trip a reality. This is meant to be a multi-generational trip, with extended families traveling and experiencing Israel together. I am thrilled to be able to return to Israel with members of our shul, and look forward to officiating at a bar/bat mitzvah service and celebration during our time there. As you can see on the attached itinerary, this is a high impact trip, including religious and historical sites as well as interactions with the people of Israel in a variety of settings. Our Israel Generations trip is scheduled for December 18-30, 2016. The cost is approximately $3500 per person, which includes all touring, accommodations and most meals; airfare is not included. Depending on the total number of participants, the cost may come down. We need to make a firm commitment to our tour company and are asking all Beth Judea members who wish to join us to reply by next Wednesday, February 3rd, even if you have already indicated interest at one of our informational meetings. President’s Message Translation from the Amidah: “Faithful are you in giving life to the dead”
ARNIE GOLDBERG CBJ PRESIDENT
I have wondered exactly what this passage from the Amidah means and why it is one of the three initial prayers of the Amidah. I am certain that Jewish scholars over the centuries have debated this sentence. Not too long ago I heard an interesting retrospection of this line.
As we look outside and view the effects of the winter weather, we envision the rejuvenation of nature as it returns every spring; when the ice melts, the flowers bloom, and the trees and the grass turn green. In a fashion giving life to what appears to be dead. At Beth Judea we also have a tree that has fallen into disrepair and neglect. Our Tree of Life, which can be found in our Lobby, has for many years memorialize life cycle events of our congregants and their families. Past Events such as birthdays, baby naming, weddings, anniversaries, and b’nei mitzvah were memorialized on the Tree of Life by individual leafs and stones. Now is clearly the time as spring approaches to give new life to our CBJ Tree of Life. This project will take considerable effort and many volunteers. I would like to thank several of our members who have already started this project by identifying those congregants who have made previous contributions to have their life cycle event commemorated. We have already started the process of obtaining quotes to rebuild and expand our Tree and to replace each and every leaf. I would greatly appreciate your help in this endeavor. Please try and stay warm and healthy, Arnie Goldberg President CBJ
Congregation Beth Judea Mission Statement Congregation Beth Judea is a welcoming egalitarian synagogue whose mission is to create a warm and inviting home that serves the lifelong spiritual, educational and fellowship needs of our members. TIME SENSITIVE RESPONSE REQUIRED BY TUESDAY, MARCH 1, 2016
Join the Beth Judea Board of Directors!! IMPORTANT NOTICE Dear Congregants, Have you ever considered being on Congregation Beth Judea's Board of Directors? It is that time of year when our Nominating Committee convenes to fill the seats of retiring Board Members, and we're looking for you! Why did I become a Board Member? It was years ago, when my youngest children were in Hebrew School, complaining and whining about it often. At that point, I was pretty much a three-day-a- year Jew. However, I have tried to instill in my kids that it is easy to complain, but much more difficult to affect change. So, I told them that I would apply to the Board of Directors in order to be their voice.
My favorite part of serving on the Board has been working on committees. In these smaller groups, I have had my voice heard and valued, I have made friends, I have gained transferable skills, and I have learned more about Judaism. Why should you become a Board Member? It is my hope that Congregation Beth Judea means something special to you; a house of worship, a house of learning, and a home where you can share your joys and sorrows. As a Board Member, you would be giving back to this community that has so much to offer you. Involvement can also be a gift to yourself. It can provide an opportunity for personal growth and exploration. As Hillel said, “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am not for others, what am I? And if not now, when? Our constitution allows all members in good standing to be eligible for service on the Board of Directors. The Board has the authority for guiding many aspects of our Congregational life, some of those including oversight of our Professional Staff, budgeting, finance matters and establishment of policies related to Synagogue operations all while serving as goodwill ambassadors to our greater community. Board Members are also required to serve as an active member of a standing committee, usher at services, and be an active participant in our synagogue's programs. Please, if you are interested, we ask that you simply answer the following questions to begin the process and assist the committee: 1. How long have you been a member of CBJ? 2. What, if any committees have you previously served on - or are presently serving? 3. Why do you have a desire to be of service as a member of the Board of Directors? 4. What areas of the synagogue are you most interested in? How would you envision participating in pursuing that interest? Your response should be sent via email to me, Debbie Kreisman Dubin, at debdubin-cbj@hotmail.com, by Tuesday, March 1, 2016. If you have any questions, I can be reached at home (847) 913-9789 or cell (847) 7389799. Sincerely, Debbie Kreisman Dubin, Nominating Committee Chairperson, Immediate Past President

Planned Giving From Generation to Generation “Making a Difference in the Lives that Follow” Learn how your “planned gifts” can ensure the sustainability of Congregation Beth Judea for future generations.
ARNIE BENDER CBJ VP of PLANNED IVING
Myth:
I have children and relatives, shouldn’t I leave my entire estate to them?
Fact:
Depending on the current tax laws, leaving a gift to charity in your will may reduce the estate tax burden on your heirs significantly. Check with your financial advisor.
Myth: Planned giving is for the wealthy. Fact: Ordinary people are showing extraordinary generosity by leaving legacy gifts in their wills and estate plans. This kindness is evident in people from all walks of life with different income levels. Because of their concern for others, their memories will never be extinguished, and their gifts will remind us all that we, too, can make a difference in the lives of future generations.
If every adult in America made a will and included a bequest of just $100, billions of dollars would flow to charitable causes every year! (Source: Leave A Legacy at leavealegacy.org)

B’nai Mitzvah Bio Gabrielle Rose Friedlander will be called to the Torah on February 13, 2016. Every person born into this world represents something new, something that never existed before, something original and unique. Gabrielle loves to share her unique and friendly personality with those around her, which is why everyone knows her as “Gabby”.
Gabby is a 7TH grader at Highland Middle School in Libertyville where she is one of only two 7TH graders on the 8TH grade Varsity Poms Squad that just placed in her first competition. She spends her evenings practicing hip hop, jazz, and leaps-n-turns dance classes. Gabby loved her Martial Arts classes and did very well in the tournament and tests. Gabby’s main activity is soccer, where she plays with focused passion and has been coached for the past 17 seasons by her Dad. She would love to be on a state champion soccer team like her big brother, Max. She enjoys shopping and, of course, hanging out with friends.
Alexander Reese Goldwasser will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, February 20, 2016. Alex is a 7th grade Woodlawn Middle School student who enjoys spending time with his family and friends, swimming, playing baseball (Bearcats Travel Team), basketball, running, travel, and giant rollercoasters around the country. Alex earned his first degree black belt in fourth grade and just become First Class rank in Boy Scout Troop 140. Alex focused his Mitzvah Project on collecting donations for Orphans of the Storm Animal Shelter. He delivered literally a truckload of beds, blankets, pet supplies, over 200 pounds of newspaper, and monetary contributions and continues collecting and helping the little lost and abandoned animals.
Gabby and her family are excited to share her celebration with the congregation, friends, and extended family who will be coming from far away. Joining her will be her parents; Danna and Alan, her brother; Max, maternal grandparents; Ronna and Allan, and paternal grandparents; Shirley and Dan.
Alex will be sharing this milestone day with his parents Susan and Richard, siblings Sammie and Joshua, relatives traveling from New Mexico, Virginia, Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, and many friends and mentors. Present in spirit: grandparents Abraham & Rebecca, Frank & Lillian, Uncle Jack and Uncle Frank. Alex is dedicating his bar mitzvah to their memory.
For her Mitzvah project Gabby chose to help “Orphans of the Storm” because she wants to help animals and loves her dog named Hester – after Devin Hester.
He and his family would like thank those who helped prepare him for this important passage: his Beth Judea Hebrew school teachers, Anna Besser, Rabbi Pivo, Hazzan Weisberg, and his tutor, Kim Abern.
Gabrielle would like to thank all those who have helped start her along the path of Judaism on her journey to become a Bat Mitzvah. This day would not be possible without the wonderful teaching from all of the teachers at Beth Judea. Gabby extends a special thank you to Anna Besser, Andrea Dickson, Hazzan Weisberg, and Rabbi Pivo for preparing her for this special day.
Alex is thrilled to have you all be present to share this day. His family is very proud of his achievement and the young man he has become.
Peter Frank Shteynberg will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Thursday, February 25, 2016. Peter attends Thomas Middle School. Despite his challenges, Peter enjoys playing piano, swimming, playing video games, and drawing. Peter worked very hard towards this wonderful and special day. For his special project Peter chose to adopt a dog from a shelter. The Shteynberg family would like to thank Andrea Dickson, Rabbi Pivo, and Hazzan Weisberg for helping Peter achieve this milestone.
Peter will be joined by his family .

Religious Education 3 Good Things Take a moment to intentionally focus on three good things that happened in your day. Doing so provides room for feelings of gratitude to take root. Try this exercise at home. Find 10 minutes to come together as a family. Have each family member list 3 good things that happened to them that day on a slip of paper. Next to each item, write one to two sentences about why or how it happened. For example: Today we had a spelling test and my score was 100%. This happened because I studied my spelling list with Mom on Monday and did a practice test on Wednesday, so I knew all of the words. Once everyone is done with his or her list, place each slip of paper into an empty bowl. Take turns selecting a piece of paper from the bowl to read aloud (don’t choose your own). When you have finished reading someone’s list to the group, give that person one compliment about an effort they made that produced one of their list items. For example: Sam, you really worked hard to learn your spelling words, and you deserved that good grade. Great job! This exercise has been proven to boost levels of happiness and gratitude, especially when practiced on a regular basis. However, it may take a couple of tries to get in the groove. Commit to trying it more than once and see if your family becomes more comfortable creating their lists with each practice—and whether they seem less inclined to take good things in their lives for granted.

Sisterhood Did you know that Jewish Book Month was way back in November? I have to admit I did not, but since I’m always trying to catch up on my reading, that copy of JUF News filled me in. The cover provided this question and lots of opportunities to answer it, “What’s on your bookshelf?” Beth Judea’s Sisterhood Book Club just finished reading Single Jewish Male Seeking Soul Mate by Letty Cottin Pogrebin, and on a cold winter evening Book Club meetings are a very good reason to get out of the house. Women’s League Reads is just one of the many things you can participate in as a member of Sisterhood. On line discussions are even offered. In January the online discussion was about The Secret Chord: an original novel of King David by Pulitzer Prize Winner Geraldine Brooks WOMEN’S LEAGUE READS Every member of Women’s League is invited to read with us. Online book group: the newest addition to our program for all members. Participate in discussions online Orpah’s Selection: In honor of Jewish Book Month, new titles of interest to Jewish women are selected with study guides BookMarks: new books of interest, interviews with authors, and more If you are not a member of Women's League Reads, you can join by emailing lsilverman@wlcj.org. Include your name, email & Beth Judea Sisterhood when you register.

The One Book/One Community choice for 2015 was A Backpack, A Bear and Eight Crates of Vodka by Lev Golinkin. It’s a memoir about his childhood exodus from Russia. The title alone makes me want to read it. And here are just a few others that might spark your interest: Panic in a Suitcase by Yelena Akhtiorskaya Hold up the Sky, by Patricia Sprinkle Little Failure by Gary Shteyngart An American Bride in Kabul by Phyllis Chesler The Luminous Heart of Jonah S by Gina Hahai (another recent Sisterhood read) Through the Door of Life: A Jewish Journey Between Genders by Joy Ladin. Here’s the link to the live chat the author held in October: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0K2YvvQ yEw This is your invitation to become a part of the Beth Judea Sisterhood Book Club. Who knows, it could lead to new interests, new opportunities, and new friendships. Please contact Sherry or me, or our Book Club Director, Brenda Levin at brendaclevin@yahoo.com. Men’s Club The Midwest Region Man of the Year/Youth of the Year dinner is scheduled for Sunday, March 6 at Beth Hillel Congregation Bnai Emunah in Wilmette, IL from 4:30 PM to 9 PM. This year we honor Orin Rotman as our Man of the Year and Celia Pivo as our Youth of the Year. It is not too late to make dinner reservations. You can also honor both Orin and Celia by purchasing an advertisement in the ad book for the program. Please see the links at the end of this article for instructions for purchasing an ad and making dinner reservations. A signature program of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs is scheduled for Super Bowl Sunday, February 7, 2016. The World Wide Wrap focuses on a Jewish ritual that spans the ages and generations. We bind up, engage, and learn about the unique Jewish ritual of putting on tefillin. If you have forgotten how to take part in this most unusual ritual or have never learned, this is a great opportunity to learn in a completely stress free environment. There will be extra sets of tefillin and personal trainers to help you through this process. Afterwards, please join us for a fabulous Bagel Breakfast! The program begins at 8:30 PM and is led by Norm Kurtz and Orin Rotman. Don’t forget to check out Orin’s Rotman’s Tefillin Wrap/Rap video on You Tube! Men’s Club sponsored a PADS dinner on December 24, 2015 at the United Church of Christ in Arlington Heights. We provided a Christmas evening Chinese dinner (of course!) for forty guests.
The church also stayed open on December 25 in the morning three hours later than usual so the guests didn’t have to go outside too early. They usually have to depart at 7:00 AM. Yasher Koach to Kitty Hoffman and Marilyn Rebnord who volunteered to visit the site on Christmas morning. The holiday season is a tough time for many people - an added layer of struggle for the guests. Friendly faces were more than welcome. It has been one year since our Beth Judea’s Men’s Club retreat was held at the Geneva Ridge resort in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. We had almost thirty men from Congregation Beth Judea’s Men’s Club attend the retreat. We learned about our Jewish rituals, prayers, Israel, Men’s Club, as well as something about each other. Most of all, we had fun! If you thought that our club’s post Shabbat retreat was worthwhile, imagine what a retreat would be like when you get members from over a dozen different Men’s Clubs! From May 13-15, 2016, the Midwest Region of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs will hold their 2016 Regional retreat at the Starved Rock Lodge and Conference Center in Oglesby, IL. This will be a memorable weekend of physical, spiritual-health, and wellness. Programming includes inspiring motivational speakers, lively discussions, traditional and alternative services, swimming, and hiking through scenic Starved Rock State Park. There will be plenty of fun and ruach for everyone. Please feel free to contact me for more information. This is a unique not-to-be missed event. Eric Yegelwel

ORIN ROTMAN 2016 Beth Judea Men’s Club Man of the Year Orin Rotman is Congregation Beth Judea’s 2016 Man of the Year. Orin joined Congregation Beth Judea in 1986 even before he had closed on his house in Buffalo Grove! Orin has been an active member of Men’s Club from the beginning. He has been a CBJ Men’s Club Board member and officer for years. He either participates in or leads almost every Men’s Club activity including the World Wide Wrap , Men’s Club Shabbat, Scotch and Steak in the Sukkah and Tap the Torah. Orin can be found on most shabbat mornings as Gabbai Rishon. He has served multiple terms as Congregation Beth Judea’s Vice President of Membership, Programming, Education, Ritual, Youth and Social Action. It is remarkable that Orin had not been selected for this honor years ago. It is well deserved and long overdue.
CELIA PIVO 2016 Beth Judea Men’s Club Youth of the Year Celia Pivo is Congregation Beth Judea’s 2016 Youth of the Year. Celia Pivo is a senior at Rochelle Zell Jewish High School (formerly CJHS). She currently serves as CHUSY Region VP of Religion and Education. She previously served as Rel-Ed VP for BJUSY and served on the CHUSY Regional General Board. Celia is active in her school’s Interfaith Youth Core, which brings together Jewish, Muslim and Christian high school students; chairs the Va’ad Tefillah (prayer committee) and Shabbaton committees at RZJHS, and is editor in chief of The Prints, the school’s literary journal. She also plays varsity volleyball. Celia is very grateful to be honored with this award; her parents Rabbi Jeff and Lisa and brothers Max and Zachary are all proud of her many achievements.
Join us in honoring Orin and Celia by attending or purchasing an ad in the ad book at the Midwest Region FJMC 2016 Man of the Year/Youth of the Year Dinner which will be held on March 6, 2016.

YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE We firmly believe that reaching out to others benefits not only the recipient, but the person providing help as well. This is, without a doubt, a win-win situation for all involved. If you are interested in making a difference, please contact one of the Hesed (Caring) committee members below: Rabbi Pivo Ellene Lammers Wendy Wunsch Evan Rumack
Did You Know... Do you know of information that would be of interest to our congregants? If so, please let us know.
We Would Like To Know WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records. Please call the synagogue office with this information. Do not assume that someone else will have notified the synagogue staff.
HESED COMMITTEE LIFE IN ISRAEL THE GOODMAN’S BLOG Howie and Suzanne Goodman were valued members at Beth Judea until they decided to make aliyah in 2009. The Goodmans have agreed to provide us with a blog on their experiences as new olim in Israel. Though we continue to miss the Goodmans, we can all look forward to reading about their adventures in Israel through the blog. An Important Announcement CONGREGATION BETH JUDEA HESED (CARING) COMMITTEE The Hesed committee would like to know if you have any difficulties/problems that you would like to discuss with a knowledgeable individual. We have a group of congregants who have been trained or are professionals who would be able to provide a brief consultation with you in order to refer you on for more in-depth assistance. We are also thinking about starting some support groups. We would like to know what you feel your needs are. Please email Ellene Lammers at elammers@comcast.net or call Rabbi Pivo. SHALVA “Its okay, the children aren’t effected” But what if you knew they were?
Did you Know……… SHALVA Collects Cellphones?
Shalva clients will often say that they can withstand their husband’s abuse as long as he never directs his anger toward their children. What many women don’t understand is that children are the silent victims of abuse and that they often repeat the behaviors they have seen.
For quite a few years now, Congregation Beth Judea has been generously collecting cell phones for SHALVA.
According to a recent study, over 90% of children are aware of domestic abuse in their home. These children are affected emotionally, cognitively, and physically. They are at great risk and often experience low selfesteem, shame, fear and guilt. Many distrust adults, fail to thrive or suffer from depression and anxiety. What can we do? The issue of domestic abuse is not just a women’s issue; it affects the entire family as well as our Jewish community. SHALVA offers free counseling to Jewish women who are or were in an intimate partner relationship. If you or someone you know needs our help, call 773-583-4673.
We thought you’d enjoy knowing a bit about how this process works. After we gather the phones you put into the collection box, we ship them to a recycling operation in Florida, Shelter Alliance . They pay us according to the “blue book”value of each phone. In processing the thousands of phones we send them every year, they wipe clean all your personal data and either refurbish your phones, recycle the parts or melt them down. Each year SHALVA receives around $40005,000 just by collecting your old or broken cellphones. All of these dollars go directly to help our clients. Recently Shelter Alliance has expanded their recycling program and now accepts Ipods, Ipads, and Readers. So, the next time you pass by the synagogue office and see the SHALVA collection box, think about all those old cellphones, ipads and ipods taking up space in your drawer or closet, and help us turn them into dollars for clients.
Upon three things the world is based: Upon Torah, Upon Divine Service, and Upon the Practice of Charity.
Cell Phone Drop-Off Box In Synagogue Office! Help domestic abuse victims by donating your old cell phones. Each phone raises money for domestic abuse crisis-counseling services in the Jewish community! There is a collection box in the synagogue office. The Word - February 2016

From The Editors In order for your article to be published in the next issue, we must have it at the synagogue by the 10th of the month! There will be no exceptions. This includes information on disk as well. We need your article as it is important to let the congregation know what your group is doing. Announcements should take the form of articles in The Word rather than separate flyers. The opinions expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Rabbi, Board of Directors or the editors.
