Rabbi’s Reflections ISRAEL AND INCLUSION That effort to include and affirm this Nearly fifty members of the Beth Judea young man exemplified the Jewish community and their families travelled to value of seeing him created betzelem Israel in late December. I was pleased to Elohim, in the image of God. Doing so accompany them and to enjoy many also reflected benefits back to others, familiar sights anew through their eyes, through the particular set of skills that as well as experiencing a number of new he shared and which provided benefits things. One of our many stops was at an to others. This past fall I outlined a IDF base in the West Bank. We had a Rabbi Jeff Pivo program of inclusion for our synagogue tour of parts of the base and learned about the security situation there, as well as which is intended to mirror these same values climbing on, and in, several of the armored and community benefits. By including all Jews, vehicles that the troops use. regardless of physical, intellectual, or emotional ability in our religious services, education The commander who guided us that evening programs and social events, we affirm our shared a story about a young man who wanted commitment to seeing every individual as being to serve in the IDF. This is not typically a created in the divine image. By including all who problem; army conscription is mandatory for seek a place in Jewish life, we too will benefit most Israelis. But this man had a disability that from their personal gifts. prevented him from being able to walk. Even though he was exempt from serving, he insisted Last month we formally began the process of that he wanted to do so, and since he had strategizing our approach to inclusion. In expertise in computer programming, the army addition to making Beth Judea a home for those placed him at this base, where his skills greatly who face the challenges of disabilities, we are enhanced their ability to fulfill their mission. Notes from the Cantor JEWISH MUSIC SEASON Feb 11-May 2, 2017 Each year in the middle of winter, we have a special Sabbath known as Shabbat Shirah, the Sabbath of Song. Shabbat Shirah always occurs on or just before Tu B’Shevat, the New Year of the Trees, and it is designated as the beginning of Jewish Music Season. The weekly Torah portion on Shabbat Shirah, known as B’shallah, includes the Song of the Sea, called Shirat HaYam. This was the song which Moses and the people of Israel sang as they rejoiced in their newfound freedom, having safely escaped from slavery in Egypt. Shirat HaYam is considered so vital that it is part of our morning liturgy each and every day. It also contains the words of the Mi Chamocha prayer which we recite as part of the blessing which follows the Sh’ma in both the morning and evening prayers. Additionally, we have a special Haftarah on Shabbat Shirah, called the Song of Deborah. Deborah was one of the Biblical Judges, like Joshua and Samson, who led the Israelites in taking possession of Cana’an, at a time when other groups. She too sang a song of triumph after the tribes of Ephraim, Zebulun and Naphtali overcame the Canaanites who fought against them. As we celebrate Jewish Music Season this year, we have an opportunity to focus on new Jewish music which is always in the works, both in Israel and in America. In recent months, with the passing of songwriter Leonard Cohen, we have seen some of his music, such as his “Halleluya”, being adapted to our liturgy. Likewise, Craig Taubman, Josh Nelson and other contemporary musicians continue to introduce new and interesting settings. I, too, continue to try writing new material, hoping to keep our prayers fresh, provocative and meaningful, while staying true to the rich heritage of our musical tradition. Wishing for you and yours a happy Tu B’Shevat, in which we recognize how blessed we are, by our trees, by our Jewish heritage, by music and by one another. See you in shul, Hazzan Roger Weisberg

President’s Message
ARNIE GOLDBERG CBJ PRESIDENT
Today is January 16th, the day we honor Martin Luther King, one of many great American patriots who exemplify the spirit and values of our country. Honoring our leaders is important as it creates a feeling of being part of something larger than any one individual.
At Beth Judea we often honor our leaders. Recently we had an amazing event honoring Hazzan Weisberg for his thirty years of service. The attendance was overwhelming and everyone participated as a member of Congregation Beth Judea. I believe it is noble to recognize our leaders, but equally important to honor those individuals who make up our Congregation. Our members are highly diverse. Our ages range from pre-school to our most senior members. We observe Jewish customs and rituals in different ways. We come from different geographic parts of the country, our families are of all different sizes, we have varied interests, occupations, political views and significant opinions regarding Judaism and CBJ. The one common thread is we are a Mishpacha (family) The intrinsic value of being a member of Beth Judea cannot be measured in pure dollars and cents, but rather in the value we realize from being part of this family. The ability to share our simchas and tzarots with friends and family is an invaluable benefit. Over the past few years our Congregation has made a major push to attract new young families who are the future and life blood of our Congregation. We tried not to ignore our current members and to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere both inside and outside our building. Our efforts were well intended, but I believe we can do more. As we approach our 50th Anniversary on June 30th 2018, I will be initiating several Shabbat events to honor congregants and to thank you for being members of Beth Judea. As always, I hope to see you at various Congregational events so I can thank you for your support of Congregation Beth Judea.
The Word – February 2017

TIME SENSITIVE RESPONSE REQUIRED BY WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2017
Join the Beth Judea Board of Directors!! IMPORTANT NOTICE Dear Congregants, Have you ever considered being on Congregation Beth Judea's Board of Directors? It is that time of year when our Nominating Committee convenes to fill the seats of retiring Board Members, and we're looking for you! Why did I become a Board Member? It was years ago, when my youngest children were in Hebrew School, complaining and whining about it often. At that point, I was pretty much a three-day-a- year Jew. However, I have tried to instill in my kids that it is easy to complain, but much more difficult to affect change. So, I told them that I would apply to the Board of Directors in order to be their voice.
My favorite part of serving on the Board has been working on committees. In these smaller groups, I have had my voice heard and valued, I have made friends, I have gained transferable skills, and I have learned more about Judaism. Why should you become a Board Member? It is my hope that Congregation Beth Judea means something special to you; a house of worship, a house of learning, and a home where you can share your joys and sorrows. As a Board Member, you would be giving back to this community that has so much to offer you. Involvement can also be a gift to yourself. It can provide an opportunity for personal growth and exploration. As Hillel said, “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am not for others, what am I? And if not now, when? Our constitution allows all members in good standing to be eligible for service on the Board of Directors. The Board has the authority for guiding many aspects of our Congregational life, some of those including oversight of our Professional Staff, budgeting, finance matters and establishment of policies related to Synagogue operations all while serving as goodwill ambassadors to our greater community. Board Members are also required to serve as an active member of a standing committee, usher at services, and be an active participant in our synagogue's programs. Please, if you are interested, we ask that you simply answer the following questions to begin the process and assist the committee: 1. How long have you been a member of CBJ? 2. On which committees have you previously or currently served, at Beth Judea or another synaogogue? 3. Why do you have a desire to be of service as a member of the Board of Directors? 4. What areas of the synagogue are you most interested in? How would you envision participating in pursuing that interest? Your response should be sent via email to me, Debbie Kreisman Dubin, at debdubin-cbj@hotmail.com, by Wednesday, February 15, 2017. If you have any questions, I can be reached at home (847) 913-9789 or cell (847) 738-9799. Sincerely, Debbie Kreisman Dubin, Nominating Committee Chairperson, Immediate Past President

Youth WHAT’S UP IN THE WORLD OF OUR YOUTH??? Data, Data, Data As January puts us right into the throws of MAP testing in the public schools, the focus of this month’s article is data. How do we measure success? At CBJ we are always looking to make each facet of the synagogue more successful than it has ever been before. We want worship services to be more inviting, school to better educate, youth programs to better engage, general synagogue programming to be more expansive and inclusive, and overall just better, better, better. The question then becomes, how do we know if it is working/better/improving? In companies, the answer to the questions typically lies in data. Is your marketing strategy workingcheck your sales numbers. Is your television show successful- check the ratings. Is your personal training plan working- weigh in. In each of these scenarios there is a very real and very tangible way to measure success. Either the numbers are improving and the plan is successful or the numbers are not improving and the plan is not successful. How, then, do we measure success at CBJ? Is it simply a question of membership numbers? Is it a question of how many programs we run or what the attendance at them is? Do we look at revenue generated and our bottom line? Do we look at enrollment in our Hebrew school or youth programs? My contention would be, that if we only focus on numbers, regardless of which numbers, we would miss out on the bigger picture of what makes CBJ successful. A place to call a second home, a place to laugh, cry, celebrate, and mourn. A place to network with new people and reminisce with old friends. A place to create new memories and walk down memory lane. Our synagogue community needs to be measured by far more than purely numbers. It needs to be measured by the feeling that it gives to the people that are involved. It needs to be measured by the difference it makes in the community as a whole and in each person’s individual life. I cannot give you a specific metric to measure all this by but can only say that when a place achieves this you feel it. It becomes something organic and feels special. This is the way our synagogue success needs to be measured and it should be done that way by each and every member on a regular basis. Remember you can always stay up to date with all things BJUSY throughout the entire year by visiting our new and improved website www.bethjudeausy.weebly.com as well as our calendar http://tinyurl.com/BJUSYcalendar. Religious Education Tu Bishevat, the Jewish New Year for the trees, is almost here. Since Biblical times, the Jewish People have been compared to a variety of trees. The date palm, olive trees and even walnut trees all evidence characteristics which we, as a people, also exhibit. Anna Besser Education Director
OLIVE TREE: There are olive trees in Israel that are 1,000 years old and still produce fruit. It is very difficult to destroy an olive tree. The roots of the olive tree go down deep into the soil, anchoring it and preventing erosion. If the branches are cut off, and only the stump remains, that stump will send forth new saplings to grow again.
DATE PALM TREE: The date palm is also an extraordinary tree. Every part of the date palm can be used, and every part is needed. That means that no part of the date palm tree is ever wasted. The dates are for eating; the lulav branches are for Sukkot blessings and for the S’kakh (thatched roofs), the fibers can be used for ropes, the leaves as a strainer and its resilient trunk for building. The date palm is able to bend with the wind without breaking. The Jewish people have a special relationship with olives and dates – just as olive oil brings light into the world, so do the people of Israel bring light into the world – Midrash Shir Hashirim Rabbah (1:2) What are some ways we bring light onto the world? How are you like an olive tree? How are the Jewish people like the olive tree?

Book Club Facilitated by Rabbi Pivo Cosponsored by Men’s Club & Sisterhood
Like many young Americans, Jonathan Safran Foer spent much of his teenage and college years oscillating between enthusiastic carnivore and occasional vegetarian. As he became a husband, and then a father, the moral dimensions of eating became increasingly important to him. Faced with the prospect of being unable to explain why we eat some animals and not others, Foer set out to explore the origins of many eating traditions and the fictions involved with creating them. Tuesday Evenings – 8:00 pm – 9:00 pm Dates: Feb. 14, 21, 28, March 14, 21, 2017 COST: Members – FREE; Non-Members - $36 for series OR $10 per session

Sisterhood It’s so hard to believe that we are now entering February already. Time is going so quickly. On January 7th, with Phyllis Udany as our wonderful leader, we celebrated Sisterhood Shabbat in a warm and lovely service. Thank you to Phyllis and all who participated so beautifully in our wonderful Shabbat morning. We celebrated Sisterhood Shabbat as an annual event, as part of a larger group of Sisterhoods around the world affiliated with Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. This year we inaugurated the centennial year of the 1918 founding of Women’s League by Mathilde Schechter. Our sisters led the service and read from the Torah. We had an added celebration of Noah Ban’s 30th anniversary of his Bar Mitzvah, where he read his Haftorah as he had 30 years ago. Thanks to Jenny Ban as well for participating. It was lovely to share the morning with you. Sisterhood and Men’s Club are co-sponsoring an Adult Ed book club series facilitated by Rabbi Pivo on Tues. evenings Feb. 14, 21, 28 and March 14, 21, 2017. Men’s Club Ladies and Gentlemen of Beth Judea, February seems to be a segue kind of month. I always considered it to be the indication of winter losing its grip on us. It may get cold again, but the bad weather can’t last no matter what the groundhog says. We will make it through and better things are ahead. February 1st, is a Tap the Torah event led by Orin Rotman. It will be at the Continental Restaurant in Buffalo Grove at 7:45 pm.
Thursday, February 2nd at 8:00, is our monthly Men’s Club meeting. All members of Men’s Club are welcome, but seating is limited. The next annual World Wide Wrap is on Sunday the 5th of February at 8:00 am. This is an event for everybody, young and not young so much anymore, men and women, any person who even thinks they want to put on t’fillen should come and participate. Many of the attendees will be putting on t’fillen for the first time. Some of our younger congregants will be using t’fillen that they made themselves. There will be extra pairs available for those who don’t have their own. Experienced wearers will be there to assist those that need help in putting them on with explanations about what we are doing and why. This is an event that I always attend and really come away from with a great sense of satisfaction.
The Sisterhood/Men’s Club Book Club series starts on Tuesday, February14th at 8:00 pm., and continues for four more Tuesdays. The book is called “Eating Animals” by Jonathon Safran Foer and the event will be facilitated by Rabbi Pivo. I hope to see you there. Though it is not a true holiday, February 17th is random acts of kindness day (look it up if you don’t believe me). An excellent opportunity to shake off the winter blues and be that something or someone in somebody’s life that can make a big difference in a positive way.

Interfaith News from the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council By Joanne Dicker, President Last year was an interesting year for the country and for the Interfaith Council. While the country was on a rollercoaster ride, the Interfaith Council stayed on a steady path adhering to its purpose to foster understanding and community with our neighbors of different beliefs, to encourage cooperative community service efforts and to serve as an ethical and moral voice. We will strive to continue on that path this year. We will continue with our annual programs and we will also be introducing new ones including: In May, we will have two clergy led panels entitled “Know your Neighbor. One will be held at Shir Hadash and the other at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Each will discuss our religious beliefs and practices. Please look for our upcoming fliers on these events. July 30-August 3rd, we will leave for our 4th Annual Interfaith Service trip. This year, we will be going to the Greater St. Louis area to help with flood recovery. The St. Louis area suffered from a massive flash flood in December of 2015. The inhabitants are still recovering and their federal grant expires in November. Please mark your calendars and join us in this worthy endeavor. All skill levels are welcome. More information will be forthcoming. We will also continue with our annual spring programs: Stamp out Hunger in May and the i-walk in June. I hope that you will join us on our path this year as we continue to feed the hungry, provide shelter for the needy and speak out for civil rights and civil discourse.
For more information on any of our programs, please contact us by e-mail or telephone: nwsinterfaith@gmail.com, 224-699-0386 or visit our website at: http://www.northwestsuburbaninterfaith.org or your council representatives:

From The Editors In order for your article to be published in the next issue, we must have it at the synagogue by the 10th of the month! There will be no exceptions. This includes information on disk as well. We need your article as it is important to let the congregation know what your group is doing. Announcements should take the form of articles in The Word rather than separate flyers. The opinions expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Rabbi, Board of Directors or the editors.
