Dear Congregants,
Have you ever considered being on Congregation Beth Judea's Board of Directors? It is that time of year when our Nominating Committee convenes to fill the seats of retiring Board Members, and we're looking for you!
Why did I become a Board Member? After I retired, I started looking at volunteer opportunities. I realized that my family and I received so much from being a member of Congregation Beth Judea, that it was time to give back. My favorite part of serving on the Board has been working on committees. In these smaller groups, I have made friends, I have gained transferable skills, I have learned more about Judaism and I have had my voice heard and valued. Why should you become a board member? It is my hope that Congregation Beth Judea means something special to you- a house of worship, a house of learning, and a home where you can share your joys and sorrows. As a board member, you would be giving back to this community that has so much to offer you. Involvement can also be a gift to yourself. It can provide an opportunity for personal growth and exploration. As Hillel said, “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am not for others, what am I? And if not now, when?” Our constitution allows all members in good standing to be eligible for service on the Board of Directors. The Board has the authority for guiding many aspects of our congregational life; some of those include oversight of our professional staff, budgeting, finance matters, and establishment of policies related to Synagogue operations - all while serving as goodwill ambassadors to our greater community. Board members are also required to serve as an active member of a standing committee, usher at services, and be an active participant in our synagogue's programs. Please, if you are interested, we ask that you simply answer the following questions to begin the process and assist the committee: 1.

Dear Congregation Beth Judea Membership, The Congregation Beth Judea Inclusion Committee is excited to announce our First Inclusion Shabbat on February 9th at 7:30pm. This service will include a speaker, Jen Phillips, Director of Recreation and Programming at Keshet and Cantor Amy Zussman along with choir members from Selah, a newly formed choir for individuals with special needs. We look forward to sharing this special event with the congregation. As we begin to plan Inclusion Shabbat, we wanted to bring together Voices from Our Community who have benefited from inclusion here firsthand. We ask the question, “What Does It Mean to Be an Inclusive Synagogue?” Looking back, we can think of moments that stand out in our minds as times when inclusion here at Beth Judea worked. Whether it be at a program, a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, a service, or a youth group activity, individuals with special needs have been and will continue to be included here in our synagogue.
We ask you to share a moment with us that we can share with the synagogue at our Shabbat. We would like to make a small booklet compiling the defining and memorable experiences that our congregants have had here at Beth Judea in regards to inclusion. We just concluded our Morning to Remember program where individuals shared their memories of our congregation. This is another opportunity to share what our synagogue is doing or has done to make a welcoming and including environment. We have asked you to share an experience that you would be willing for us to share. B’nei Mitzvah Bios Ethan Michael Karp will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, February 17, 2018.
Haley Berg will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, March 3, 2018.
Ethan is a 7th grader at Twin Groves Middle School in Buffalo Grove.
Haley is a 7th grader at Cooper Middle School in Buffalo Grove.
He loves anything about technology and cars. He plays baritone horn with the band at his school. Ethan spends his summers at sports camp and Camp Chi. Ethan enjoys spending time with his friends and family. For his mitzvah project, he will donate his time and resources to the Beth Am Food Pantry. Joining Ethan on his special day are his parents, Deborah and Jeffrey, and his sister Lauren. He will also be celebrating with his grandparents, Estelle and David Karp and Carol and Laurence Gross, and his aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Ethan and his family would like to thank Rabbi Klatzker, Hazzan Weisberg, and his tutor Kim Abern for their help in preparing him for this special day. A big thank you goes to Anna Besser and all the wonderful Hebrew school teachers who have taught Ethan so much over the years.

Haley is focusing on helping others for her mitzvah project. She decided to help to serve meals at The Ark. The Ark is an organization that helps Jewish families in need. This organization is important to Haley because her great grandmother volunteered her time at The Ark weekly for over thirty years. Haley chose to also complete volunteer work at The Ark as a way to honor her great grandmother and feel connected to her on her Bat Mitzvah day. Haley will be sharing her special day with her parents, Alison and Michael, and her brothers Andrew and Mitchell. Her grandparents, Debbie and Steve Ehrlich and Roz and Bernie Berg; her aunts, uncles, and cousins will also be there along with other family and many friends to help celebrate this special day. Haley would like to thank all those who have helped her in her journey to become a Bat Mitzvah. Special thanks to her awesome Hebrew school teachers, Kim Abern, Hazzan Weisberg, and Rabbi Klatzker for preparing her for her special day.

2018 BETH JUDEA’S MEN’S CLUB MAN & YOUTH OF THE YEAR ROB LIPKA 2018 Beth Judea Men’s Club Man of the Year
ARI WEISS 2018 Beth Judea Men’s Club Youth of the Year
Rob serves as the Treasurer for the Beth Judea Men’s Club. In this position Rob is responsible for managing the treasury of the club as well as designating charities that will receive donations from the tzedakah contributions. Rob will also be following in the footsteps of Beth Judea’s 2017 Man of the Year, Louis Rabin, as he will be the Ritual Chairman for the upcoming FJMC Midwest Regional Retreat at Starved Rock.
Ari Weiss is currently a senior at Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire. He’ll be headed off to college in August to study engineering. Ari has been extremely involved in the USY chapter at Congregation Beth Judea, BJUSY, serving on the Executive Board as Membership/Kadima Vice President and Junior Representative. This year, Ari served on the CHUSY Regional Executive Board as Membership/Kadima Vice President. He is also involved in USY internationally, having attended International Convention last year in Dallas and this year in Chicago, and participating in USY Israel Adventure during the summer of 2016.
In addition to his responsibilities as Treasurer, Rob is also quite active in the synagogue. He regularly attends Sunday and Thursday morning minyan and participates in Shabbat morning services where he is Hagbah and leads the Musaf Service when asked. Because of this Rob has been given the nicknames “Raizor” and “Mr. Musaf”. Rob occasionally reads torah and was given the honor of reading torah at the 2017 FJMC International Convention in Washington, D.C. Rob has been a member of Beth Judea for 18 years. He loves to travel and is an avid wine collector, primarily California reds. He has been to Napa and Sonoma Valley’s and has toured many of the wineries there. Rob is also a big sports fan and is very loyal to his Chicago teams including the Cubs, Bears, and Bulls. Needless to say, tears came to his eyes when the Cubs won the 2016 World Series. The only thing that would have made it better would have been if he could have shared that moment with his late father. Rob would like to thank his family for all of their support. He knows that they are very proud of this honor he is receiving. He would also like to thank the members of the Beth Judea Men’s Club for this auspicious honor. He is greatly appreciative and humble to be chosen to represent his chapter.

Along with USY, Ari has also been a very active member of Beth Judea’s religious school. He began Sunday School in kindergarten and continued his formal Hebrew education through Hey. He has continued to contribute to Beth Judea by volunteering as a madrich alongside his mom in the religious school for the past five years, since 8th grade. Ari’s experiences with the younger students inspired his decision to run for Membership/Kadima Vice President in the chapter and then the region. He has enjoyed serving as a mentor and leader to many of the Kadimaniks and Kadinkers he has known since kindergarten. Outside of USY, Ari is a member of Stevenson’s National Honors Society and was involved with SHS TV. SHS TV involves students from all high school grade levels in broadcasting live on the internet activities at Stevenson, including athletic events and theatre performances. Ari is proud and honored to be receiving Beth Judea’s Youth of the Year Award. He thanks Marc Sender, CBJ’s Youth Director, for his encouragement and for acting as a mentor to him, his amazing BJUSY and CHUSY family, and his parents, Debbie and Mitch, and big brother, Max, for their support and patience. Ari is especially grateful to Papa Bill up in heaven, and his Grandma Elaine for showing him the importance of being part of our Jewish community.

The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws. Historically, the Board of Directors of Congregation Beth Judea has sent shiva baskets to the immediate family of Board members; parents, spouses, siblings and G-d forbid, children. We would like to extend this gesture to the entire congregation.

Religious Education Purim Foods around the World

Food has been intrinsic to Jewish ritual, life, and culture from the outset. What is the very first act that the Israelites in Egypt were commanded to do? To have a communal meal. And with that, the beginning of the Jewish people is through a meal. Throughout the year, there are various rituals and holiday celebrations that are accompanied by a seudah, celebratory meal. Purim is no exception. Many customs relating to eating special foods have developed around Purim, the most famous of which is eating hamantaschen, also known as Oznei Haman (Haman’s ears). But there are foods to consider eating on Purim. Here’s a few to consider trying this year.
•
The theme of disguise is prevalent in the story of Purim. So it’s no surprise that we would eat “hidden” foods, such as kreplach and ravioli (where the filling is covered up with dough) on Purim.
•
A special Purim challah, known as keylitsh [kulich] in Russian, is sometimes made. This challah is oversized and extensively braided. The braids on the challah are intended to remind us of the rope used to hang Haman.
•
A special Moroccan Purim bread, known as Boyoja Ungola di Purim, is made with hard boiled eggs to represent Haman’s eyes.
•
Among Sephardic Jews, it’s a custom to wrap pastry dough around a decorated hard-boiled egg to create the shape of a Purim character or an animal. After baking, these artistic creations (Folares) are displayed with pride and eaten with delight.
•
Pasta has long been considered a traditional Purim dish. Consider enjoying some Caveos di Aman (Haman’s Hair), a traditional Bulgarian Purim meal consisting of pasta, eggs, lemons, olives, and spices.
•
Bean dishes are also eaten. They include salted beans boiled in their jackets and chickpeas boiled and seasoned with salt and pepper: This is meant to remind us that Esther would not eat anything at the court of King Ahashuerus that was not kosher, so she mainly ate peas and beans.
•
Palmiers, a French Jewish dessert, is meant to evoke the misshapen ears of Haman.

Adult children often find themselves too busy to volunteer their time or to donate to others. In this session we will discuss some of our current challenges and explore concrete strategies we can bring to the children in our lives to help shape their character.
Presented by Lena Kushnir, Ed.D. Lena Kushnir, Ed.D. has been in Jewish education for over 20 years. She began her career as a teacher at Sager Solomon Schechter Day School, later became the Director of Education, and spent six years as the school Principal. She is currently working as an independent consultant and leadership coach, working with day schools and religious schools throughout Chicagoland, as well as nationally. She is passionate about helping to shape our future generations into competent, compassionate and Jewishly connected individuals.

Youth WHAT’S UP IN THE WORLD OF OUR YOUTH??? International!!! At the very end of December over 600 teens descended upon Chicago from all over the world. To first spend Shabbat with around 80 teens locally hosted at our own chapter and then to move on to spend the next 5 days at the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Chicago with the hundreds from everywhere was an incredibly powerful experience. To better understand the experience from a teens perspective please read the article below from our very own Communications Vice-President, Abbey Finn! Please make sure to mark the date for this year’s Purim Carnival, February 25th on your calendar!!! We encourage all teens in 8th grade and up to come help at the carnival and sign up to volunteer!!! Youth Reflection on International Convention by Abbey Finn Last month, I attended USY’s (United Synagogue Youth) International Convention in Chicago. It was easily one of the most incredible experiences of my life. I’ve been involved in USY since elementary school but becoming active internationally was unlike anything I’ve ever encountered before. The theme of the convention was D’ror Yikra, the road to freedom.
We had many educational sessions and speakers who taught this concept of freedom, but one speech stood out to me. Rabbi Michael Siegel from Anshe Emet Synagogue and Pastor Chris Harris from Bright Star Church spoke on the importance of connections between the Jewish and African American communities. They stressed the term “better together.” I’m heavily involved in interfaith work, so seeing this clear example of bridging separate identities to initiate freedom was amazing. At the end of the speech, Pastor Chris Harris sang the Israeli national anthem, Hatikvah. Seeing an African American Pastor sing Hatikvah in front of hundreds of Jewish teens is something I will not soon forget. On Christmas day, we got to go out into the Chicago community and volunteer on several service projects. I am currently in a JUF program called VOICES, which is a philanthropy team composed of Jewish teens that works to grant money to various nonprofits. Several teams volunteered at organizations that VOICES has granted money, and it was really cool to see the direct impact the money made.
I personally worked at the Pacific Garden Mission, which is a charity organization that helps homeless people and people living in poverty in the area. The majority of these people are Christian, and we served them a nice meal for Christmas. It made me grateful for everything I have, and it felt really nice to take advantage of my non-observance of the holiday to help people who do to have a meaningful day. In addition to all of this, I made many new friends from all over the country. I got to take them around Chicago, and although many of them aren’t used to the cold, it was so much fun. One of my friends helped me wrap tefillin for the first time during Shacharit on the last day. It was a really meaningful experience that aided me in feeling more connected to Judaism. USY has made an extreme impact on my life, and IC enriched that connection even further. I made amazing friends, celebrated Beth Judea’s winning International Chapter of the Year, volunteered, explored my faith, and had one of the best weeks of my life. Through all of this, I discovered what my road to freedom, D’ror Yikra, means to me.

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about my family. In my family, there are some I never see, hardly ever see, never want to see, love to see, can’t wait to see, wish I could see more often, see a lot, see once in a while, keep trying to see but never manage to see, and those who have passed away and will never see again.
2-4-2018 WWW — The World-Wide Wrap. Men and women, young and old, clergy and lay people, experienced and novices all come together on this day to wrap themselves with Tefillin. This is a chance to connect with our fellow Jews across the globe. This is an annual event, and this is your year to come and join us.
There are those family members I don’t even know, ones who think they know me but don’t, ones who know me too well and love me anyway, ones I haven’t met yet, ones I like, love, and have strong disagreements with, sometimes all at the same time. I suspect that almost every type of relationship that there is to have, I have with one or more family members. Taking that all into account, at the end of the day, I feel truly blessed to be a part of my family. I live a wonderfully full complicated but complete life due to my family.

If you haven’t guessed by now, I’m referring to my family at Congregation Beth Judea. I’ve heard and read several times, that in times of great distress, people will either go home or to their place of worship (their other home). Many people I know do have second homes, some for climate, and getaways, or for investments. My second home is CBJ. I’ve made a huge investment, but have even greater returns. We will persevere in spite of and because or diversities. Hey CBJ! I love you. At the end of this month we will be reading the Megillah. I am hoping to see a great many of my CBJ family members there. No family member lets another family member celebrate Purim alone. Sisterhood Happy February everybody! While it may be cold outside, Sisterhood will warm your soul with our annual and very meaningful Sisterhood Shabbat service on Saturday morning, February 3rd at 9:30 am, which this year is being paired with our Torah Fund Campaign. The service will be entirely led by Sisterhood members and is being coordinated by Phyllis Udany. We are very excited that our guest speaker will be Edna Schrank, the current Women’s League Central Great Lakes Region President and former Region Torah Fund VP. She will be sharing information about the good that your donations to Torah Fund do for all the Conservative seminaries, which is where our rabbis, cantors and educators are trained. And after the service, please stay and join us for a beautiful Kiddush lunch. As we’re sure you’re aware, Purim is almost upon us, which is then (seemingly quickly) followed by Pesach. At our seders, many of us have added the relatively new tradition of the Miriam’s Cup to celebrate how Moses’ sister Miriam was able to create a well of fresh water wherever she was in the desert on the journey from Egypt. If you haven’t already started this tradition, perhaps you would like to join us at on Wednesday, February 7th at 7:45 pm for a unique Judaic Arts Program to create your own Miriam’s Cup. We will be designing and etching your choice of either a Miriam’s Cup or an Elijah’s Cup. The cost is $15.00 for Sisterhood members and $18.00 for non-members. Reservations are required. Lawmakers must seek ways to address acts of anti-Semitism on campus With growing anti-Semitism on campus, the only unacceptable option is inaction. by Bruce Portnoy | Jan 23, 2018 Having experienced anti-Semitism, I was motivated to seek an understanding as to why anti-Jewish extremism is gaining a current foothold on college campuses across the United States. Two years ago, I recognized a virus-like, anti-Israel malady targeting pro-Israel Jewish students and faculty members, as well as speakers brought on campus to educate all about Jewish values and concerns. In the beginning, the confrontations appeared relatively civil. However, as coverage by press and television crews expanded, the rhetoric seemed to intensify. Yet, the occasionally hostile exchanges that followed appeared to be largely ignored by campus authorities. Characterized as Israel policy reactions, angry protestors could be heard spouting recognizable anti-Semitic characterizations, some laced with threats. In addition, the demonstrators loudly silenced any perceived challenges to their anti-Israel philosophy, which stifled rare opportunities for rational discussion. Ironically, only the perpetrator's free speech and assembly rights seemed to matter. As time went on, without meaningful recourse, some of the young demonstrators appeared to act as if the First Amendment gave them the entitlement to intimidate fellow students. With no agreed-upon legal definition of anti-Semitism from which to draw potential protection, Jewish students on campus became vulnerable to the whims of the protestors. At the same time, they were denied justice traditionally offered to other targeted students under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, simply because it only prohibited discrimination based on race, color, and national origin, not recognizing organized acts of religious discrimination. Determining a need for federal intervention, on Dec. 1, 2016, the Senate, led by Sens. Tim Scott, R-S.C., and Bob Casey, D-Pa., passed on its first floor vote, and by unanimous consent, legislative initiative S.10, also known as The Anti-Semitism Awareness Act. The intent of the act was to codify a definition of antiSemitism that would permit the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights enforcement division to investigate those suspected of organized anti-Semitic activity on campuses across the U.S. and to hold accountable the academic institutions tolerating such activities. This ultimately would have helped all students enjoy a more safe learning environment. On the same day, the House of Representatives' Bipartisan Task Force for Combating anti-Semitism, led by co-chairs Peter Roskam, R-Ill., and Ted Deutch, D-Fla., introduced companion legislation to the adopted Senate bill. Yet, the bill, which had so much promise, was never brought to a floor vote and instead was moved to the House Judiciary Committee under the direction of Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va. Subsequently, it was transferred to the House Constitution and Civil Justice Subcommittee, where it was left to languish until the end of the 114th congressional term. It was then voided for lack of follow-through, effectively denying its protection to targeted Jews on campuses across the U.S. There were expressed concerns that the legislative language necessary to accomplish the desired goals might encounter First Amendment issues and codifying anti-Semitism might have its own downside risks. Neither of which was sufficient to summarily dismiss the intent behind the anti-Semitism bill. Short of reintroducing the anti-Semitism bill, alternate means to address the hostile, if not potentially dangerous, situation on many campuses, must be sought. Perhaps, it might be advantageous to encourage individual states to take on the necessary corrective measures, similar to those used to disarm the "Boycott, Divestment, and Sanction" movement that targeted Israel's legitimacy and viability. Or, perhaps, Congress might investigate amending the Title VI list of discrimination's to include organized religion-based persecution. With growing anti-Semitism on campus, the only unacceptable option is inaction. Bruce Portnoy is a retired optometrist and author of the Geo-political, thriller novel, "First, the 'Saturday People', and then the..." as well as a former op-ed contributor to the Miami Herald. He has volunteered with youth offenders at a detention facility and taught high school students.

Scholarship Programs
Through the generosity of the Kovler family, two scholarships will be awarded ($10,000 each year of study toward a four year undergraduate program) to Jewish high school seniors beginning college in the fall of 2018. Students must have financial need and minimum of a B average academically. Math and business majors are preferred.

Interfaith Council News from the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council By Joanne Dicker and Helene Fox, Beth Judea representatives to the Council As I write this column, it’s quite cold but sunny. It’s a good time to reflect. The holidays are over, but many of our neighbors are still in need. Please remember those less fortunate. Donations of canned goods are accepted throughout the year at our food pantries located at Congregation Beth Am (1370 Abbott Court, Buffalo Grove), Kingswood Methodist Church (401 W. Dundee, Buffalo Grove), and St. Mary Parish (10 North Buffalo Grove Road.) We look forward to the spring and summer with the following upcoming programs: 1.
Stamp out Hunger: sponsored by the US Postal mail carriers on May 12, 2018. You place non-perishable food in your mailbox and the mail carriers will collect it. The Interfaith Council will then pick up the food and distribute it to our pantries which serve our community.

5th annual I-walk against Hunger on Sunday, June 24, 2018: A family walk from St. Mary Parish to Hope Lutheran Church and back. Refreshments are served at Hope Lutheran. All donations collected go to assist our food pantries. We need walkers, sponsors, and volunteers. If interested, please contact us below.

5th annual service trip to Detroit on August 1-5, 2018.
