Rabbi’s Reflections THE LIGHTS WE KINDLE In the same way, the lights we kindle Every December, or more accurately on Hanukkah are both a reminder of every Kislev and Tevet, we celebrate miracles past and a call to action. The Hanukkah by lighting the hanukkiah. The Maccabees’ military victory and the oil hanukkiah reminds us of the light of the in the Temple were miracles, the former Temple, which was rededicated after our resulting from the people’s efforts on people’s victory over the Syrian Greeks in nd their own behalf and the latter deriving the 2 century B.C.E. After the war, there from God. When we publicize those was only enough oil to burn for a day, yet Rabbi Jeff Pivo miracles on Hanukkah, we are it miraculously burned for eight. We reminding ourselves, and others, that there are commemorate that miracle, as well as the times when we rely on God to help us, but that, miracle of the Maccabees’ victory against more often than not, it is human initiative that will overwhelming odds, by lighting the hanukkiah save us. Like the blind man that Rabbi Yose met, for eight days. our Hanukkah ‘torch’ is a light to remind others that we all rely on one another. Each of us is ‘blind’ in This lighting is the main tradition of Hanukkah, and among its customs none is more important some way, and it is the responsibility of every than that of pirsum haneis, the publicizing of the human being to see and to aid another person miracle. This is done by placing the hanukkiah whenever possible, helping them to overcome near a window through which others can see it. their particular ‘blindness.’ Hanukkah’s light is that That custom raises questions about who is of miracles divine and human, and we must never supposed to be seeing the lights, and why. allow our part of that equation to be dimmed or Publicizing the miracle assumes that there is extinguished. someone who doesn’t know about it, but who needs to know. There is a story in the Talmud about an incident concerning Rabbi Yose that may help illuminate this issue. He said: I was long perplexed by this verse: “And you shall grope at noonday as the blind gropes in darkness [Deut. 28:29].’ Now what difference does it make to a blind man whether it is dark or light? Once I was walking on a pitch-black night when I saw a blind man walking with a torch in his hands. I asked him ‘Why do you carry the torch?’ He replied: ‘As long as the torch is in my hand, people can see me and aid me.’

The Word – January 2017

And, although I am writing this just prior to the synagogue Israel trip, you are reading it just after our return. I look forward (or back?) to our journey to the land where the Maccabees fought for Jewish tradition, especially since we will be in Jerusalem during Hanukkah. As we return to you, we hope to bring a bit of Hanukkah’s light, and the joy of visiting the land of our beginnings, to all of you. Hanukkah sameakh,

B’nei Mitzvah Bios Asher Barshefsky will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, January 28, 2017. Asher is a seventh grader at Woodlawn Middle School in Long Grove, IL, where he’s on the school’s basketball, cross country, and track teams. He also plays saxophone in the school’s band. However, nothing brings Asher greater joy than the baseball season, when he’s able to play for his Lake County Stars team and spend as much time at Wrigley Field as possible. Asher’s mitzvah project approach was to learn about multiple social service agencies serving our local community and to volunteer his time at each, understanding both the impact of the organization and his efforts. Among these experiences has been packing kosher meals through the Jewish Relief Agency of Chicago for delivery to those in need, spending time visiting with the elderly at the Lieberman Center in Skokie, and serving meals at JUF’s Uptown Café downtown. Asher, his parents Laura and Adam, and his sister Ariel are appreciative of the guidance of Rabbi Pivo and Hazzan Weisberg and are particularly thankful to his tutor, Kim Abern, who has made the overall bar mitzvah preparation experience so meaningful, special, and fun for his entire family.

Aden Mosak will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on February 4, 2017. Aden is a seventh grader at Cooper Middle School in Buffalo Grove, Illinois, where he is an honor roll student. When not at school, Hebrew school, or studying for his Bar Mitzvah, Aden enjoys playing baseball and playing his saxophone and guitar. For his mitzvah project, Aden is collecting gently used musical instruments to benefit the West Point School of Music, which provides musical instruction and instruments to disadvantaged youth in some of Chicago’s toughest neighborhoods. He is excited to help children who otherwise might not have the opportunity to experience the passion for music. Aden is looking forward to sharing this special day with his parents, Barbara and Bryan, his brother Michael, and his Bubbe Esther Mosak. He is also excited that many of his cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends are able to join him from around the globe. Aden and his parents would like to thank Rabbi Pivo, Hazzan Weisberg, his CBJ Hebrew and Judaica teachers, and his fantastic tutor Kim Abern for all their support and instruction in helping him reach this exciting milestone.

Religious Education Shabbat is a unique time of the week during which we learn to take time: time to slow down, time to consider our role in the world, time to rest. Shabbat is also a time to get together for a family meal, unwind, and relax. Here are some Shabbat topics that can be discussed around the dinner table.

Anna Besser Education Director

Gratitude Tonight at dinner, take a moment to talk about what you are grateful for this week. Regardless of how (or even whether or not) you celebrate Shabbat, make this your weekly Friday night ritual. Not only will this give you a chance to connect with your family, it will help your children learn the importance of being thankful for what they have. Shabbat Shalom! Heroes Most heroes worthy of recognition are not found in the headlines. Judaism discovers heroism in everyday people – parents who endure fatigue to eke out a livelihood for their families; noble hearts who give of themselves to help those less fortunate; and individuals who stand their ground in matters of religious and ethical conviction. You are a hero to those around you! Ask your kids what they can do to be heroes every day. Shabbat Shalom. TGIF TGIF! G-d, in G-d’s infinite wisdom, knew what we all know deep down. Sometimes you need to take a break from the chaos, to take a step back, in order to gain perspective and appreciate what you really have. This week, turn off the TV during dinner and make the effort to stop, look around, take a breath, and reconnect. With great food, warm family ambiance, and meaningful reflection and conversation, Shabbat has the power to unite us, to relax us and to recharge our batteries. Shabbat Shalom! Tikun Olam If G-d created the world for us to use, does that mean that we can use it however we please? We cannot live on this earth without having an impact on the world and tikun olam, the perfecting or the repairing of the world, has become a major theme in Judaism. There is no one else to repair it but us. This week, try making extra efforts to turn off the light when you leave the room; turn off the tap while you’re brushing your teeth; unplug appliances when they’re not in use. What else can you do? Shabbat Shalom! Tzedakah From a very early age, we teach our children that “sharing is caring,” and deeply rooted in this notion is the Jewish principle of tzedakah. Shabbat presents a great opportunity to reinforce this value by making it a weekly habit to give to others. Mark the end of the week by talking about how you can share what you’ve earned with those less fortunate. Shabbat Shalom!

The Word – January 2017

Religious Education Nature / Exploring the Quiet Set aside one Shabbat each month as “nature Shabbat” and take time to be outdoors together — hike in a local park, go to the beach, or relax in the yard together for a period of time to appreciate creation. If being outdoors is not of interest to your family, look for other opportunities to experience quiet and serenity together like meditation, massage, reading aloud or individually in the same room, doing a jigsaw puzzle together or attending services. Customs There is a beautiful custom of blessing our children every Friday night. We place a hand on their head and pray that our sons will grow up to exhibit the qualities of Ephraim and Menashe, biblical brothers who were not tempted by their immoral surroundings and were united in their efforts to maintain their Jewish values. And we pray for our daughters to emulate the righteous qualities of our matriarchs Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah with insight, a giving nature, sensitivity and leadership. What values do you wish to impart on your children? Take a moment to bless your children tonight – either with the traditional blessing or one you have created – and enjoy a special moment of connection. Shabbat Shalom! Forgiveness The concept of forgiveness is the major underlying theme of the High Holidays. While it’s not always easy to acknowledge and take responsibility for one’s transgressions, harder still for most is being able to forgive someone for theirs. Why is it important to forgive? Because holding a grudge is like letting someone live rent-free in your head. When we forgive, we are no longer prisoners of our past. It takes courage, not weakness to forgive and, furthermore, if I can’t learn to forgive you, then how could I possibly ask another for forgiveness? Shabbat Shalom! Prayer What is prayer and why do we pray? Prayer serves to help recognize that everything we are, everything we have, and everything we use ultimately comes from G-d (Babylonian Talmud, Brakhot 35a). Prayer is an integral part of everyday Jewish life; it expresses our belief in G-d and unites us as a people. Tonight at dinner, work together to come up with a family prayer. Whether it be for thanksgiving, petition or forgiveness it will unite you around a common goal. Shabbat Shalom!

Sisterhood It is so hard to believe that 2016 is about to end and as you read this, 2017 has begun. We have enjoyed many Sisterhood social and educational programs and are looking forward to spending time with new and old friends as we participate in our upcoming events as we move forward in 2017.

By the time you read this, we will have enjoyed our Sisterhood Chanukah party planned by Sarah Goldenberg. It is always a fun evening filled with good friends and many laughs. Sarah will be compiling our favorite recipes shared at the party into a digital format for us to enjoy. A white elephant re-gift and game is such a fun idea. Thank you, Sarah,!

On December 11th, we had our annual Chanukah bazaar planned by Ann Lerman and Karen Nagel. It was a success on so many levels thanks to these wonderful ladies and the “village” of volunteers before, during, and after the bazaar. Thank you to Ann and Karen for all their time, talents, and love they put into this event as well as the Gift Shop all year long. We are so grateful for everything you do for Sisterhood and our synagogue, as well as your treasured friendship.

January 7th will be our Sisterhood Shabbat. Thank you to Phyllis Udany who is coordinating the service. It is not too late to contact her if you would like to participate. Her email is phyllisdiane45@yahoo.com. There are English and Hebrew readings as well as non-speaking parts. We’d love to have you attend as part of the congregation, whether you choose a specific part in the service or not. Please consider joining us to celebrate the strength of Jewish women and the joy of Shabbat.

I just returned today from a wonderful Sisterhood Judaic Arts Program at Gallery’s Choice Studio in Downers Grove. We each designed and crafted a fused glass mezuzah with the help of the creative studio’s owners, Rose and Bill Jarecki, who could not have been nicer. Thank you to Hannah Whitney and Marilyn Victor for planning the event and working behind the scenes with the talented owners to create the working design of our mezuzot. It was a new experience for Rose and Bill as they were not familiar with the concept of a mezuzah. They were very enthusiastic and up for the challenge. If you are interested in contacting this wonderful studio to see all they have to offer, the website is www.gallerychoice.com.

Best wishes for a year filled with peace and gratitude,

Men’s Club Ladies and Gentlemen of Beth Judea, I hope this day finds you all in good health and spirits. As we start a new secular year, we, as American Jews, get a second chance to make a new start. I hope this coming year brings you only nachas. We Americans will inaugurate our new president this month. I know I am not the only one who is hoping and praying for a better life for everyone. One way to ensure this is to become more deeply involved in tikun olam. Rebuild the world. Giving a helping hand to those in need is essential to the survival of all of us. This month, on Saturday the 14th, we are once again helping at The Lieberman Home at 9:15 am. This is a service the Men’s Club has been involved with once a month for several years. You don’t have to be in the Men’s Club, or even be a man to participate. We help the elderly down to the sanctuary, and participate in the service. Contact me or Sandy Ramras for more details if you are interested. Another way to help our planet is to recognize and support those who are actively involved in doing for others. Our Man of the Year, Louis Rabin, and Youth of the Year, Avi Limer, are being honored at the annual FJMC Midwest Region Man/Youth of the Year dinner on March 19th of this year. Buying an ad in the ad book will show appreciation and support for these two fine, giving people. Our Men’s Club retreat is coming up on the 21st of this month. Though it promises to be a fun and engaging event, we will also be making strong bonds and building relationships in a positive way. Tzedakah and charitable acts are always a big part of what we do. On Friday night, the 27th of this month, we are having a graduation for our adult Hebrew Literacy Class. All are welcome to attend this beautiful event that recognizes the months of work these

The Word - January 2017

dedicated adults have committed to learning how to read and chant a Shabbat service. In conclusion, I would like to point out that your membership to Beth Judea is a lot like belonging to a health club. The more you go, the more you get out of it. So, if joining a health club is on your list of New Year’s resolutions, consider really putting in some hours here for your spiritual health. Be well everyone, see you at shul.

Jerry Sakol Men’s Club President

We have some important dates to remember this month:: 1-5-2017:

Men’s Club meeting @ 8:00.

1-14-2017: Lieberman Nursing Home Shabbat Service. Every fourth Saturday, we are blessed with the opportunity to do a beautiful mitzvah. Some of our Men’s Club members go to the Lieberman center and help the residents celebrate Shabbat in their synagogue. This is actually one of my favorite activities connected to Men’s Club. If you you are interested, call me or Sandy Ramras for details. 1-21-2017 Men’s Club Retreat . 1-27-2017 Hebrew Literacy Graduation 2-1-2017

Hesed Committee

An Important Announcement CONGREGATION BETH JUDEA HESED (CARING) COMMITTEE The Hesed committee would like to know if you have any difficulties/problems that you would like to discuss with a knowledgeable individual. We have a group of congregants who have been trained or are professionals who would be able to provide a brief consultation with you in order to refer you on for more in-depth assistance. We are also thinking about starting some support groups. We would like to know what you feel your needs are. Please email Ellene Lammers at elammers@comcast.net or call Rabbi Pivo. FOR A LIST OF EMERGENCY HOTLINE NUMBERS, AGENCIES AND RESOURCES click here

We Would Like To Know WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records. Please call the synagogue office with this information. Do not assume that someone else will have notified the synagogue staff.
