FROM THE RABBI STORIES MATTER We also heard stories about private There was a sense of excitement on lives: how the congregation cared for December 3, when Rabbi Lifshitz, many of you when you were ill or Hazzan Weisberg, and many of our overwhelmed by grief, and how it members came together to share helped you to educate your children in memories of the past fifty years at CBJ. Jewish values and living. These stories We heard a lot of interesting stories. are not merely private—they are also For example, did you know that in 1968 the congregation decided to become RABBI DAVID KLATZKER public, for they show how our lives have become intertwined. In fact, that morning in hallah bread to greet new residents to the area? December, we imagined a “history of the If a family was not Jewish, they gratefully future”—a projection of what we hope to accepted the gift; if they were Jewish, they accomplish over the next five years. Our understood the full meaning of the gesture, and findings will be posted on the CBJ webpage for many joined the new congregation. everyone to review. Let me offer some brief reflections on the importance of CBJ’s history in the shaping of its congregational mentality. Quite early in the narrative of CBJ, a unique culture was formed, with special emphasis on hands-on, participatory Judaism, rather than the “high church,” “let the rabbi and cantor do it all” kind of Judaism that is common at many other synagogues. Many of our members can recall times when they did something for CBJ that made them feel very proud and satisfied. Fundraising has sometimes been a challenge, but whenever there was a compelling vision, people responded.
We underestimated the time needed for this story-telling process, so we will try to arrange other opportunities for people to share their synagogue experiences. As we look back on fifty years of history, let us tell stories that are lively and true, and try to discern the deeper significance of those stories.
Best of Life, Rabbi David Klatzker

SPECIAL SHABBAT SERVICES
Dear Congregation Beth Judea Membership,
TEMPLE CHAI & CONGREGATION BETH JUDEA SHARED SHABBAT SERVICE Friday, January 12th, 2018 Service will be hosted at Temple Chai 1670 Checker Road, Long Grove, IL Kabbalat Panim (Pre-Service Oneg) 5:45 pm | Worship 6:30 pm __________________________
The Congregation Beth Judea Inclusion Committee is excited to announce our First Annual Inclusion Shabbat on February 9th at 7:30pm. This service will include a speaker, Jen Phillips, Director of Recreation and Programming at Keshet and Cantor Amy Sussman along with choir members from Selah, a newly formed choir for individuals with special needs. We look forward to sharing this special event with the congregation. As we begin to plan Inclusion Shabbat, we wanted to bring together voices from our community who have benefited from inclusion here firsthand. We ask the question, “What does it mean to be an inclusive synagogue?” Looking back, we can think of moments that stand out in our minds as times when inclusion here at Beth Judea worked. Whether it be at a program, a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, a service, or a youth group activity, individuals with special needs have been and will continue to be included here in our synagogue.
Rejoice at our annual Shabbat Celebrating Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
We ask you to share a moment with us that we can share with the synagogue at our Shabbat. We would like to make a small booklet compiling the defining and memorable experiences that our congregants have had here at Beth Judea in regards to inclusion. We just concluded our Morning to Remember program where individuals shared their memories of our congregation. This is another opportunity to share what our synagogue is doing or has done to make a welcoming and including environment. We have asked you to share an experience that you would be willing for us to share.
Let’s join our voices in song and spirit as we honor the legacy of Dr. King and his messages of Equality, Freedom, Peace and Unity!
If you are willing to participate, please email your short anecdote by February 1st to Scott Rosen at SJR9018@gmail.com who will be compiling the booklet. Please also let us know how you would like your passage signed such as first name only, congregant, or first name with first initial of your last name. You may also email me any questions you might have.
(No services at Beth Judea that evening)
Thank you in advance for your willingness to share your story. We all look forward to hearing about your experiences. Sincerely, Scott Rosen and the Inclusion Committee of Congregation Beth Judea Please contact Lisa Neiman at lneiman@bethjudea.org or 847634-0777 if you need any special accommodations, including transportation, to participate in our program.

B’nei Mitzvah Bios Leah Beth Drizner will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, January 20, 2018. Leah is a 7th grader at Twin Groves Middle School in Buffalo Grove. Her hobbies include improv comedy, swimming, singing, and making people laugh, but mostly she enjoys hanging with her friends, family, and cherished pal, her dog Ferb. As a caring, sweet, and empathic individual, Leah likes to help her dad and brother Matt deliver holiday meals to families in need through Maot Chitim. Leah is the youngest of three children, and she looks forward to following in the footsteps of her brother Matthew and sister Samantha to the Beth Judea bimah for her Bat Mitzvah. Leah will be sharing her special day with friends and family, both local and from around the country. Aunts, uncles, cousins, and more will be on hand to help her celebrate. And, in spirit, Leah's Buby Henchie and Zady Allen, Buby Roz and Papa Sammy, and Uncle Steven will be watching over her. Leah and the rest of the Drizner family would like to thank Rabbi Klatzker and Cantor Weisberg for their guidance, and Kim Abern for her valuable teaching and sense of humor. Thank you, as well, to all the Beth Judea teachers who through the years have prepared Leah for this day and encouraged her to respect and appreciate her religious and cultural identity.

Shiva Baskets

Sunshine Fund
SUPPORT BETH JUDEA BY PURCHASING GIFT CARDS
The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws. Historically, the Board of Directors of Congregation Beth Judea has sent shiva baskets to the immediate family of Board members; parents, spouses, siblings and G-d forbid, children. We would like to extend this gesture to the entire congregation.
Donations may be sent the shul attention Lisa Neiman. Thanking you in advance for you generous donations. Respectfully, Lisa Neiman

By joining our CBJ delegation, you will have an opportunity to choose to lead on a variety of important issues effecting Israel and the U.S.-Israel relationship, i.e. advocate to our legislators that they strictly oversee Iran’s malign activities in the region, protect Israel at the UN, and continue to provide the military assistance critical to Israel’s security. And you’ll be able to enjoy the company of our CBJ friends as we get together to learn from internationally-recognized thought leaders on the Middle East.

Religious Education Baal Tashchit: How Much Do We Waste?
Anna Besser Education Director
In modern times, Tu B’Shevat has come to represent ecological or green issues. Bal Tashchit, Aramaic for “do not waste,” is a Jewish value which means that we are not to waste resources. It is an idea developed from a Biblical prohibition against cutting down fruit bearing trees during war: “When, in your war against a city, you have to besiege it a long time in order to capture it, you must not destroy its trees, wielding the ax against them. You may eat of them, but you must not cut them down. Are the trees of the field human to withdraw before you into the besieged city? Only trees that you know do not yield food may be destroyed.” (Deuteronomy 20:19-20)
And here’s what Maimonides had to say about Bal Tashchit. “Whoever breaks vessels, or tears garments, or destroys a building, or clogs a well, or does away with food in a destructive manner violates the negative mitzvah of bal tashchit” (Rambam, Hilkhot Melakhim 6:10) Another anonymous rabbinic view: “The purpose of this mitzvah [bal tashchit] is to teach us to love that which is good and worthwhile and to cling to it, so that good becomes a part of us and we will avoid all that is evil and destructive. This is the way of the righteous and those who improve society, who love peace and rejoice in the good in people and bring them close to Torah: that nothing, not even a grain of mustard, should be lost to the world, that they should regret any loss or destruction that they see, and if possible, they will prevent and destruction that they can. (Sefer Ha-Hinukh, #529) Bal Tashchit is practiced through recycling efforts and general conservation of natural resources. If we were to buy only products that use minimal recyclable packaging, that would exemplify Bal Taschit. Take a moment to contemplate the items we purchase on a daily and weekly basis. How quickly do we use them up? Do we need everything we use? Can some of these disposable things be replaced with alternatives, with things we can use over again? Here are some statistics on American consumption patterns for you to consider.
Americans represent 5% of the world’s population, but generate 30% of the world’s garbage. The average person in the USA produces 4 pounds of garbage a day. The average person in the USA throws away about 20 pounds of nonfood waste each week. This includes 11 pounds of paper, 2 pounds of glass, 2 pounds of plastic, and 2 pounds of metals. Of the garbage Americans throw out, half could be recycled, which is enough to fill a football stadium from top to bottom every day. Of these recyclables, Americans throw away enough aluminum to rebuild the entire commercial air fleet every three months, enough steel to reconstruct Manhattan, and enough wood to heat 5 million homes for 200 years. It takes 95% less energy to produce an aluminum can from an existing one than it does to produce one from raw materials.

AJEC presents Raising a Mensch in an Age of Entitlement What we want most for our children and grandchildren is for them to be kind, decent human beings. Today’s society offers many influences that actively work against this goal, allowing children to grow up in a world of instant gratification and constant distraction. Adult children often find themselves too busy to volunteer their time or to donate to others. In this session we will discuss some of our current challenges and explore concrete strategies we can bring to the children in our lives to help shape their character.
Presented by Lena Kushnir, Ed.D. Lena Kushnir, Ed.D. has been in Jewish education for over 20 years. Men’s Club Ladies and Gentlemen of Beth Judea, It is my hope that you all have a healthy and happy secular New Year. Men’s Club has had, and is looking forward to, a very active and exciting number of events. I would be remiss in my duties to not recognize and thank the volunteers who showed up on a Sunday some time ago and made very short work of the Chanukah candle packing. Our happy packers include: Fred Rabinowitz, Rob Lipka Ron Friedman, Marilyn Victor, Joe Rosenfeld, Barry Bikshorn, Eric Yegelwel, Lou Rabin, Orin Rotman. Phyllis Udany, and Albert Stark. Our synagogue is truly blessed with people who so readily and willingly give of their time to volunteer at so many levels and tasks. On that same note, the candle delivery volunteers gave time, effort, and gas towards making sure that every congregant received a set of candles to bring light and warmth to this time-honored tradition. Our dauntless, dedicated delivery dudes include: Ron Friedman, Sandy Victor, Louis Rabin, Fred Rabinowitz, Orin Rotman, Chuck Walcer, Eric Yegelwel, Evan Rumack, Arthur , Stacy Sachs, Rob Lipka, Barry Bikshorn, Norm Kurtz, and of course me. Many of our driver-deliverers took several routes braving a wide variety of weather conditions. Thank you again one and all. Turning back the clock just a bit, and several centuries, our very own Orin Rotman led a very different and compelling Tap the Torah event on November 15th. He used the play The Merchant of Venice to bring some interesting and thoughtprovoking discussions that can be as effective, and timely to our lives today. Yasher Koach to Orin for once again expanding our understanding of life in so many ways and still tying in our Jewish connection. Our next Tap the Torah is on February 21st, please watch this space for further details.
Looking back more recently, the First Annual Sisterhood/Men’s Club Latke & Vodka evening was a wonderful event. Sarah Goldenberg and Brandt Rosen really hit this one out of the park.
With a full crew of volunteers, not least among them master chefs Brandt Rosen and Steve Limer, and company, planned, chopped shredded, set up, cooked, and cleaned their way to an extremely well executed and joyous fest of food, spirits, and a MURDER MYSTERY solved by a super sleuth participant. Please read the Sisterhood article in this newsletter listing each wonderful volunteer by name. It was a great night enjoyed by three generations of Beth Judeans. Our next Men’s Club board meeting is January 4th at 8:00 pm at the synagogue. Please join us and get your feet wet. It’s a great fellowship that could always use at least one more good man. Our next Saturday morning at Lieberman Center is January 13th at 9:15 am. The Men’s Club assists the residents to a Shabbat service, helps with the service, and assists the residents back to their rooms. This is a wonderful opportunity to help others and have a good time doing it. My email is Fivepie@aol.com. Please send me a message if you want to help out. A very big event is coming quite soon. It’s the Annual Men’s Club Man and Youth of rhe Year dinner. We are honoring Rob Lipka and Ari Weiss this year. Folks, this is really a big deal. Our honorees have proven themselves to be extremely well-rounded people dedicated in every way to our species, country, faith, and most specifically to our synagogue. Please show your gratitude and support by placing an ad in the Ad Book and attending the dinner to honor them. You can access the ad book and register for the function online at https://midwestregionfjmc.myshopify.com This event is on March 11th at 4:30 at Beth Shalom, 3433 Walters Ave. Northbrook IL 60062. The early bird cost for the dinner is $36.00. This is a great chance to recognize two people who have done so much for you this past year and beyond. This event will be here before we know it so please sign up soon! continued on next page

Vodka & Latkes and Murder Mystery
December 9, 2017
Sisterhood Happy 2018 everybody! Sisterhood is looking forward to a new year of exciting programs to share with you. Before we start in on the new, we should thank everyone for the “old.” Last December 9th, Sisterhood and Men’s Club hosted for the first time ever a very fun event called Vodka, Latkes… and MURDER! The turnout was amazing. Besides the “regulars,” there were new synagogue members, potential new synagogue members, friends, friends of friends, and members who’ve never come to anything like this before. We’d like to thank the committee, chaired by Sarah Goldenberg and Brandt Rosen, which included Natalie Pesin, Rich Ward and Wendy Weinger, Debbie and Steve Limer, Rebecca and Mischa Schlichting, Sandy Victor, Rhonda Cohn, Heidi and Jerry Sakol, and of course, Karen Edidin and Lisa Neiman. Even Natalie Silk, who came early, just pitched in to help. We sampled some interesting vodkas, ate THREE kinds of latkes, and played a very unique game of Clue, Jewish style! We cannot thank by name everyone who helped put this unforgettable evening together and those who came to participate and made this evening really unforgettable. And a SPECIAL thank you to Brandt and Steve who spent the entire night frying up the latkes so we could eat them and play the game.
Mark your calendars for 7:00 Wednesday, January 17th for a Sisterhood Special Educational Event at Sunset Foods (Route 83 in Long Grove). Courtney Mayszak, Registered Dietician Nutritionist, will give us an overview, a tour, and answer our questions on nutrition. This event is a kickoff to our 2018 focus on Health and Wellness. There is no charge AND it’s open to ALL synagogue members and friends. Saturday February 3rd will be our annual Sisterhood Shabbat. This year, we are combining it with Torah Fund to help educate our members as to all the good their donations to Torah Fund do. Phyllis Udany is handing out parts to anyone who wants to participate. She’s got Hebrew, English, AND non-speaking parts for those of you who are shy. Now you have NO excuse for not participating! Please call her and let her know what kind of part you’d be interested in. Rhonda Cohn and Heidi Sakol Sisterhood Co-Presidents
