B’nei Mitzvah Bios Jake Drucker will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, January 8, 2022.
Jacob Drucker
Jake is a 7th grader at Aptakisic Junior High School. He plays both the alto and tenor saxophone in the school band as well as the jazz band. Jake is also a member of the Aptakisic wrestling team and is looking forward to the beginning of the season. He enjoys playing baseball in the spring and summer and is planning on being an umpire this spring as well. He is a “Lifer” at Camp Nageela Midwest. Jake’s hobbies include chess, yoyos, and Rubik’s Cube type puzzles. Jake is looking forward to celebrating his Bar Mitzvah with his parents Marla and Brian, brother Max, Bubbe, Zayde, aunts, uncles, lots of cousins, extended family, friends, and passersby. This day has an extra special significance, as he is chanting the same Torah portion that his Zayde did for his Bar Mitzvah. Jake and his family sincerely thank all those who helped him get to his special day. Special thank you to Kim Abern, Rabbi Zimbalist, and Hazzan Bat-Sarah, to Mom for getting him through his practicing, and to Zayde for coaching him to lead the Torah and Musaf service. Charles Andrew Groner will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, January 15, 2022. Charlie is an eighth grader at Middle School South in Lake Zurich. He is very involved in music and plays alto saxophone in both symphonic and jazz bands. In addition to music, Charlie swims on swim team, runs cross country, and is a Life rank in Boy Scouts. In his spare time, Charlie enjoys riding his bike, researching technology, and spending time with his friends.
Charles Groner
For his Mitzvah project, Charlie organized a drive for United Way of Lake County. His family and friends donated money, gift cards, and items for families in need. Charlie collected donations and shopped for winter coats, hats, and boots. After organizing the generous donations, he delivered the items to United Way so that several families could have a happy holiday. Charlie is looking forward to sharing this special day with his parents, Stacy and Allen, his sister, Lori, his grandparents, Lynn and Art Freedman and Natalie Groner, along with additional family and friends. Charlie’s Grandpa Jerry will be missed, but we know he will be there in spirit. Charlie would like to thank Natalie Gurin, Rabbi Zimbalist, and Cantor BatSarah for helping him prepare for his Bar Mitzvah. He also thanks Anna Besser, Kim Abern, and all his teachers who provided him with a meaningful Jewish education.
B’nei Mitzvah Bios Max Isaac Kudlowitz will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, January 22, 2022. Max is a seventh grader at Daniel Wright Junior High School, where he plays bass in the orchestra and jazz band. Max also enjoys playing basketball for the Lincolnshire Sports Association as well as spending time with his sister Anna, his brother Aaron, and his rescue dog Abby. Max Kudlowitz
Max is looking forward to celebrating this milestone with his parents Matt and Effie, his sister Anna, his brother Aaron, his savta Shlomith Cohen, his grandmother Sharon Kudlowitz, his grandfather Barry Kudlowitz as well as his other relatives and friends. His saba Baruch Cohen, who is tremendously missed, will be with us in spirit. Max and his family would like to thank Rabbi Zimbalist, Cantor Bat-Sarah, his bar mitzvah tutor Natalie Gurin, and all his teachers throughout the years for all their assistance, education, guidance, and support in reaching this momentous occasion. Max would also like to thank his sister Anna for helping him learn his Torah portion and for reading Torah at his bar mitzvah.

HESED COMMITTEE Congregation Beth Judea is more than just a building. It is a caring community, and we are here to help each other in times of need. The Hesed committee consists of dedicated volunteers who want to support our congregants when they need it most. As such, we offer a variety of services that we hope will be helpful to our CBJ congregants. The committee has five (5) sub-committees, outlined below, that would welcome the opportunity to be of assistance. Please let us know if you need assistance by calling the synagogue office or emailing the Hesed chairs Marilyn Green-Rebnord or Evan Rumack at hesed.cbj@gmail.com. Confidentiality is one of our major concerns, so please do not be embarrassed to ask for our help. Only our chairs and the volunteer will know.
If you are ill — and give permission to our clergy or office staff — we will try to have a committee member call to see how you are doing and if you need anything. This may include a hospital, rehab facility, home, or skilled nursing care visit during your illness. If you need help getting to a doctor’s appointment, religious services, synagogue programs, or such errands as prescription pickup, our committee is set up to help you. While we may not always be able to make such arrangements, we will do our best. Should you have a loss, we will try to arrange for a committee member to stay at the shiva house during the funeral service so the house will not be unattended, and no family member or friend need miss the service. We will be there to accept deliveries, but not to set up the kitchen. Rabbi will ask you if you would like this help when he is contacted. For security reasons, you will be told in advance who is coming to your home. Should you need, the committee will try to arrange to attend the evening minyan at the shiva home to ensure that a minyan is present to enable mourners to say kaddish. Minyan leaders are also willing to help. At the end of shloshim, we will contact you to check in during your bereavement. It is our intention that this period will be marked during the evening minyan by acknowledging your loved one’s name and by dedicating the reading of a psalm to them and inviting you to the service.
We would like to thank our current committee members for their commitment to helping others .
If you have any questions or wish to join us, please contact Marilyn Green-Rebnord (847-8217740) or Evan Rumack (847-253-4130).

The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws.

Men’s Club Greetings from the Men’s Club. As I am writing this, there are only a couple of weeks left of 2021. I hope your year was good and that you stayed healthy. We just came back from our Men’s Club Retreat (more on that a little later in this article) and are now looking forward to what’s coming up this month. As mentioned above, we have just gotten back from our Men’s Club Retreat at the Ridge Hotel in Lake Geneva, WI. There were 28 of us who attended, and it was approximately 19 hours of prayer, ruach, discussion, and fun. The theme for the weekend was “Legacy.” We kicked off the weekend with a short Maariv service followed by Havdalah and then dinner. After dinner, it was all about fun and games. Thanks to the Hospitality Committee (Jared Goldstine, Robert Levy, and Dan Sheehan) for a wonderful and fun program. We finished the evening with a chance to just relax and hang out. Sunday morning began with Torah study led by Orin Rotman or a fitness activity with Sandy Victor. That was followed up with a D’var Torah from our Ritual Chairman Sam Sussman and then morning services led by Lou Rabin and Jerry Sakol. After breakfast, we had an HMV (Hearing Men’s Voices) program led by Alan Marcus and his team (Ron Friedman, Jerry Gothelf, and Lou Rabin), and our discussion revolved around our theme of Legacy. For those of you who have been to one of these programs in the past, you know that what is said during the program is usually very thought provoking and always stays with the participants. This program lived up to that, but I can say that we did get some particularly good discussion and ideas on what legacy means and how we can continue that within our club. We followed the HMV with a discussion on tzedakah, led by Alan Friedlander, and what we should be doing for our community. As with the HMV, there were many good ideas, and we will be talking about this more on the coming months. We concluded the formal portion of the weekend with lunch and some final remarks. Many of us then headed over to the Lake Geneva Bowling Lanes, where we could go bowling, play darts or pool, or watch whatever football game they had on. Overall, it was a wonderful time away, and if you couldn’t make it, I strongly encourage you to plan on 2023. I want to thank the Brandt Rosen, Steve Limer, Alan Friedlander, and Norm Kurtz for all your hard work in putting this together. This was a large task, considering the circumstances, and you did a wonderful job. As I have mentioned in the past couple articles, the Beth Judea Men’s Club and the Congregation Beth Shalom Men’s Club are partnering on an evening at the Chicago Wolves game. The date will be Saturday February 19, and the Wolves will be playing the Iowa Wild. Game time is at 7:00 PM at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont. Tickets are $18 and this is a family event, so feel free to bring your spouse and kids. For more details, see the flyer or call Steve Limer or me. On Friday January 7, our Hebrew Literacy students will be graduating. Please join Wesley Morris, Alan Sabol, and Eric Scott and their teachers, Lou Rabin and Jerry Sakol, as they help lead the services that evening. I wish a hearty Mazel Tov to each of you on this wonderful accomplishment. Our next Tap the Torah will be Wednesday February 2. Orin Rotman will be leading the discussion on the topic “I, Robot.” Please keep an eye on your email for more details and location. On Sunday February 13, we will once again be having our annual World-Wide Wrap. This year we will be wrapping in person and via Zoom. We are currently in the planning stages so please keep an eye out for more information. Finally, a very special mazel tov to Brandt, Jennifer, and Sia Rosen on the birth of Ren Maisel. She came into the world on December 8, and all are doing well. That’s it for now. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out to me or Brandt Rosen. As always, please stay safe and healthy. L’Shalom, Rob Lipka BJMC Co-President

From The Editors In order for your article to be published in the next issue, we must have it at the synagogue by the 10th of the month! There will be no exceptions. This includes information on disk as well. We need your article as it is important to let the congregation know what your group is doing. Announcements should take the form of articles in The Word rather than separate flyers. The opinions expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Rabbi, Board of Directors or the editors.
