of “normal.” Personal time is at a premium, and it is easy to lose sight of the need for self-care. Leaders must recognize this, and the communities they serve need to accept and support it, while at the same time crafting the clear message that we are in this together and we will be okay.
OUTGOING BOARD MEMBERS
The genuine emotion of a leader impacts the mood of the greater community and models for others what too often we are afraid to say or express. Leadership demands emotion and, just like every person in the communities they serve, leaders should feel comfortable to freely express emotion. What kind of leaders would they be if they didn’t? Sometimes leadership requires more from a leader than anyone would have ever expected, even the leader himself or herself. No one is super-human. Even the best leaders cry, and in today’s world, that should be considered a hallmark of exemplary leadership. And when coupled with resilience, those tears and authentic emotion will reveal new pathways and opportunities for the future.

NOTES FROM HAZZAN When I first arrived at CBJ, I wrote my first Word article about Shehecheyanu moments. Those are moments in our lives in which we thank God for helping us arrive at this time. As I sit to write my final Word article, I return to the Shehecheyanu. In preparation for my father’s retirement last year, my sister and I wrote a song based on this idea. As I prepare to leave Chicago, I find myself remembering the lyrics we wrote: HAZZAN GIL EZRING
“Here I stand at the end of one journey looking out at what lies ahead, Remembering places and faces that brought me here to reflect on this life, that so far I’ve led.” I am now reflecting on my time at CBJ. I am thinking about all the people I’ve met and relationships I’ve made. I am eternally grateful for the lessons and support from this incredible community. I have grown as we celebrated and grieved together, as we sang and prayed together, as we learned and taught together. Through the Holidays, b’nei mitzvah, the weddings, the baby namings, the funerals, the birthdays, the anniversaries, and the events in all our lives, I have had the amazing opportunity to get to know you. I will never forget you and the lessons that you have taught me. Because of you, my CBJ family, I have become a better leader, teacher, and Hazzan. Thank you all for an incredible two years of growth, learning, laughing, singing, crying, hugging (until social distancing), praying, and love. It has been an honor to be your Hazzan. I am trying to stay positive and hope for a day when the building can be open. When Governor Pritzker delivered his approach to reopen Illinois, I knew we needed to make some difficult decisions. The first decision that needed to be addressed was the High Holidays. As I discussed at the Annual Meeting, the high holidays are going to be different this year. We held four ritual committee meetings to discuss the holiday season and received a lot of feedback by many members of not only the ritual committee but other synagogue members who wanted to join the discussion. Thank you to Arnie Bender and Rabbi Zimbalist for your leadership through these meetings. The one constant about the High Holiday Services this year that is no different from previous years is that they will be creative, meaningful, and inspiring thanks to the efforts of our entire staff and our dedicated congregants.
One thing that CBJ needs and has is a devoted membership. Today, we need that membership more than ever. The budget that was discussed at the annual meeting is based on our membership numbers remaining

I can honestly say it has been my privilege and honor to serve as your president during 2019/2020 fiscal year. I’ve talked to several past presidents, and we all say the same thing – every president has faced a challenging time. While challenging, it is my goal that CBJ get through this and other times in order to celebrate another 50 years. I can’t believe that when the next Word is published, I will be halfway done with my term. I have learned so much from this experience, and I am grateful for the confidence you have placed in me. I wish for all of us continued health and safety during this difficult time. If you need anything, please do not hesitate to contact our clergy, our professional staff, or any member of the Board of Directors. My email, if you would like to contact me directly, is goldstein4@hotmail.com. L’Shalom,

HESED COMMITTEE Congregation Beth Judea is more than just a building. It is a caring community, and we are here to help each other in times of need. The Hesed committee consists of dedicated volunteers who want to support our congregants when they need it most. As such, we offer a variety of services that we hope will be helpful to our CBJ congregants. The committee has five (5) sub-committees, outlined below, that would welcome the opportunity to be of assistance. Please let us know if you need assistance by calling the synagogue office or emailing the Hesed chairs Marilyn Green-Rebnord or Evan Rumack at hesed.cbj@gmail.com. Confidentiality is one of our major concerns, so please do not be embarrassed to ask for our help. Only our chairs and the volunteer will know.
If you are ill — and give permission to our clergy or office staff — we will try to have a committee member call to see how you are doing and if you need anything. This may include a hospital, rehab facility, home, or skilled nursing care visit during your illness. If you need help getting to a doctor’s appointment, religious services, synagogue programs, or such errands as prescription pickup, our committee is set up to help you. While we may not always be able to make such arrangements, we will do our best. Should you have a loss, we will try to arrange for a committee member to stay at the shiva house during the funeral service so the house will not be unattended, and no family member or friend need miss the service. We will be there to accept deliveries, but not to set up the kitchen. Rabbi will ask you if you would like this help when he is contacted. For security reasons, you will be told in advance who is coming to your home. Should you need, the committee will try to arrange to attend the evening minyan at the shiva home to ensure that a minyan is present to enable mourners to say kaddish. Minyan leaders are also willing to help. At the end of shloshim, we will contact you to check in during your bereavement. It is our intention that this period will be marked during the evening minyan by acknowledging your loved one’s name and by dedicating the reading of a psalm to them and inviting you to the service.
We would like to thank our current committee members: Bruce Darin Joanne Dicker Steve Dicker Cathy Feiger (congregant calls coordinator) Helene Fox Marilyn Green-Rebnord (Hesed co-chair) Ellene Lammers (shloshim coordinator) Brenda Levin
Marcie Marcus Louis Rabin (shiva minyan coordinator) Orin Rotman Evan Rumack (Hesed co-chair) Merle Rumack Heidi Sakol Bonnie Sender (shiva house sitting coordinator) Barb Stark Larry Wollheim (driving/Helping Hands coordinator)
If you have any questions or wish to join us, please contact Marilyn Green-Rebnord (847-821-7740) or Evan Rumack (847-253-4130).

The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws.

Religious Education SHELTERING-IN-PLACE ACTIVITIES
Anna Besser Education Director
As we enter Phase 3 of Restore Illinois, we hope to begin gathering in small groups and participating in outdoor activities while still practicing social distance. While we look forward to “3D” engagement with friends and family, we will still be limited in our activities, so here are some fun family-time activities to pass the time.
PUZZLES: Are you antsy and bored? Putting a puzzle together is a great distraction and keeps your mind busy. There are many options to choose from – pick one that suits your family – 100 pieces, 500 pieces, or 1,000 pieces! VIRT UAL HAPPY FAMILY TIME: Use Zoom, Google Meet/Hangout, or HouseParty to gather family and friends together for a fun night of games! You can play Kahoot, Trivia, Heads Up, or you name it…so many options to pick from. For an adult gathering, make it a Happy Hour Time. Share some cocktail/mocktail recipes and a new bottle of red. As the weather warms up, take the opportunity for family to gather in their backyards/driveways while socially distancing.
GAME NIGHT: What a great time to play board games! In our home, Trivia Pursuit, Scrabble, and Uno are big hits. Our trivia game sometimes takes us a week to declare a winner. We have quite the collection of games we’ve amassed over the years, so it’s nice to have choices of games. GET MOVING: If you’re used to participating in sports or going to a gym, now is the time to try something new. Try a modified at-home workout, go for a walk/run, set up a net in the backyard for soccer, baseball, volleyball, or use the reopened tennis or pickleball courts and batting cages. Summer is almost here, and this is the time to spend it outdoors. And remember, CBJ offers weekly exercises classes – Restorative Yoga and Body Building Bonanza.
PICK UP A NEW HOBBY: Always been wanting to try your hand at painting or photography? Maybe you have an interested in knitting or gardening? Or maybe you have a great idea for a podcast, but have never had the time to dedicate to starting it? Now’s the time to give it a go! You can order nearly anything on Amazon these days, so what are you waiting for? COOK: What more is there to say? This is the time to try something new. A new cuisine, a new food, a twist on an old recipe. Host a family dinner theme night – dress up, decorate for the theme, and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Try Italian, French, Greek, Hawaiian - you name it!
Religious Education Special Food Days to Enjoy Over the Summer (courtesy of Jteah.og)
The calendar is filled with special days throughout the year. Put your own Jewish twist on these summer days while you enjoy special foods. • June 12 – International Falafel Day: Falafel is a particularly popular food in Israel. Take the opportunity to connect with Israeli cuisine by making your own falafel and enjoying it in a pita with hummus and tahini. You can find a recipe for falafel (along with some of its history) here. • June 17 – Eat Your Vegetables Day: In the Torah, it says that when God created people, God instructed them that they have domain over the Earth and that they have a responsibility to take care of the Earth (Genesis 1:28-30, Genesis 2:15). On Eat Your Vegetables Day, make a salad with a variety of sustainably produced vegetables. Discuss how you can use the earth’s resources while continuing to protect those same resources. You can even start producing your own produce. • June 21 – National Smoothie Day: Some things are just meant for each other – peanut butter and jelly, peas and carrots, naps and rainy weather. Smoothies are made for summer. Celebrate National Smoothie Day by blending together food, family, and fun in the sun as you kick off the first day of summer in style. Throw in your favorite mix of sweet juices, tangy fruits, fresh vegetables, and delectable surprise ingredients — and express your own personal take on the taste of summer. • July 7 – International Chocolate Day: Chocolate is especially important on the Jewish calendar around Chanukah, when gelt (chocolate coins) is a favorite treat. As you enjoy some chocolate on International Chocolate Day, think about the Maccabees’ courage in standing up for what they believed was right and what you can do to make a difference in the world. You can even make your own chocolate with cocoa powder and common kitchen items. Check out one recipe here. If you would rather keep it simple look for Israeli chocolate at your local supermarket. • July 13 – French Fries Day: Believe it or not, French fries just might have originated in France (though Belgium also claims ownership). French fries have become a popular addition to sandwiches at falafel stands in Israel (though they are called chips there). Reprise your falafel sandwich from June’s Falafel day and include your own homemade French fries. You can find a recipe for French fries here.
Religious Education • July 19 – National Ice Cream Day: The whole month of July is National Ice Cream Month, but July 16 has been specially set aside as a day to enjoy this tasty, cold treat. This year, National Ice Cream Day falls during the Three Weeks on the Jewish calendar. The Three Weeks are the days leading up to Tisha b’Av, when we commemorate the destruction of the first and second Beit Hamikdash (Temple in Jerusalem), which the Talmud tells us happened because the Jewish people were not being nice to each other. In commemoration of the Three Weeks, buy a tub of ice cream and work as a team to sculpt a model of the Beit Hamikdash. As you eat the sculpture, discuss how working together as a team helped the success of the project. • July 26 – National Bagelfest Day: This one kind of goes without saying. Bagels are a delicacy that were brought to North America by Polish Jews. While different places have their own methods of making bagels, can anyone debate the deliciousness of this boiled-then-baked, hole-in-the-middle bread? Take the opportunity to cook your own. While it might be a patshke (a time consuming, multi-step process, in this case), you can find one recipe here and a gluten-free one here. When your bagels are done, whether you enjoy lox, cucumber, or avocado on top, make sure to include a good schmear. • August 3 – Watermelon Day: In the Torah, it says that watermelon was one of the foods that B’nei Yisrael missed from Egypt as they traversed the desert on the way to the Promised Land (Numbers 11:5). In fact, there is historical evidence that watermelon was cultivated in ancient Egypt as far back as the second millennium BCE. Celebrate the freedom of summer by eating some watermelon and remembering the Exodus from Egypt. Enjoy that we can eat watermelon as free people. Click here for some fun ways to present your watermelon. • August 5 – National Mustard Day: Whether you like Dijon, brown, yellow, or any of the many varieties of mustard, this is the day for you. Just as we can take mustard seeds and develop them into a variety of flavors that enhance our food in different ways, so too the Torah offers us multiple flavors of understanding that enhance our lives and our communities. Do a mustard taste test. (You can even make your own if you prepare far enough in advance.) As you taste different mustards, choose your favorite pasuk (verse) or narrative from the Torah and discuss the different flavors that emerge from it.

Sisterhood On May 18th, we voted on and installed our new Board for 2020/21. A huge todah rabah to our outgoing board members Rebecca Schlichting, Karen Nagel, Jennifer Rosen, Helaine KatzRatskoff, Phyllis Udany, Wendy Weinger, Eileen Spiegel, Natalie Pesin, and Evi Gibbs. Just because you are leaving now does not mean you can’t come back later. A hearty welcome to Judy Fisher and Susan Katz, who are joining our Board in new positions this year. We were not able to have our usual installations in person, but it was a fun evening nonetheless with a virtual game headed by Sarah Goldenberg. Thank you to Rhonda Cohn for leading our evening’s festivities. Our farewell to Karen Nagel was a beautiful evening! We will miss seeing her smiling face at the gift shop, but she is moving to California to be closer to her kids and grandkids. It was so nice to see so many faces, share memories, and enjoy each other’s company. It was so disappointing to not be in person, but the large turnout made up for the lack of actual in person connection.
Hopefully, you are already aware that the Women’s League Convention will now be entirely virtual on July 12th. It is unfortunate as it was scheduled to be in our own backyard, Schaumburg. The registration for the virtual convention is forthcoming. The mitzvah projects for the Ark are still being collected. They are fleece tie blankets and shopping bags made from t-shirts. They are both no-sew projects. If you are like me and are purging at home, you probably have a few extra t shirts that could be put to good use. For many different reasons, we are not having our yearly rummage sale. We are planning an Unrummage Funraiser on August 30th. The plan is to have a truck in the parking lot ready to take bags and boxes of soft good (clothes, linens, towels….). I know that August 30th seems like a long time from now, but before you know it…. Please consider holding on to your donations as the money raised will go back to the synagogue. Understand that this collection is planned, but as many things that have been planned, it could change. Keep an eye on the weekly emails for updates as they come. Typically, over the summer our programming takes a breather as we prepare for the fall. There is a good chance this fall is not going to look like the last. Our current situation is not ideal, but we have learned that we can be resilient and flexible. Let us use that to our advantage as the opportunities present themselves. If you have a good idea for summer programming, please share it. We would be happy to see what we can put together on short notice. As the synagogue year draws to a close, I reflect on a year we were not planning. COVID has certainly changed everything about our beloved CBJ and those we love within it. It has forced us to focus on the things that really matter: our connections and our health and wellbeing. In that respect, I think that we have come out ahead. There will continue to be challenges in the days, weeks, and year ahead. Facing them head-on as a congregation with those ideals, we will get through this. We need each other. As one year ends and another begins, we say shalom to Sarah Goldenberg as she moves out of the co-president position. Thank you so much for your help, support, and friendship over the last year. It has been fun. We made a great team! We also say shalom to Michele Sussman, who is joining me as co-president this year. I am excited to work with another wonderful, dedicated woman. We will see what this year has in store for all of us. Whatever it is, we are better together!

Men’s Club As this is my last Word article as Men’s Club President, I am filled with a myriad of thoughts and feelings. And where should I begin? There are so many different ways to start this last article that I found myself unable to decide which one would be most appropriate. Should I start by thanking everyone who read my articles and hope they got something worthwhile/informative out of them? Should I start by thanking the Men’s Club for giving me the opportunity to have the honor of being President these past two years? Should I start by thanking the incredible Men’s Club Board for the unfailing support they provided these past two years that made it easy to be their leader and who ensured that all our programs were run successfully? Should I start by thanking everyone who participated in a Men’s Club event over the past two years and hope they felt the program was worthwhile? Should I thank my wife, Jean, who encouraged me to take on the role and for supporting my efforts these last two years? Since all the above statements equally apply, I really can’t decide. The past two years have passed by much faster than I had expected, and I feel both blessed and honored to have had the privilege of leading a truly remarkable group of men. Thank you for having the faith in me to entrust me with this awesome role. And now, back to the regularly scheduled program! Yasher Koach to Al Gimpel for the informative, erudite, and thoroughly enjoyable Tap the Torah entitled “Here comes the SUN” he conducted on May 13. Al’s presentation helped clarify and make more understandable the very complex and intricate Jewish calendar. He also helped us marvel at the genius of the Rabbinic sages who developed this unfailing mechanism that has proved remarkably accurate after 1,300 years and is expected to remain so for the next 14 millennia! We look forward to many more future programs where Al can share his vast Judaic knowledge, insights, and humor. A very hearty shout-out to Sandy Victor for organizing the much needed and greatly appreciated Wellness Program in May. After being confined to home for so long, getting outside for some exercise and fresh air was a welcome change. And suggesting the newly
The Word – June-July 2020
renovated Buffalo Creek Forest Preserve as the site for walking, running, or biking was a wonderful idea. If you haven’t had the opportunity to visit this location for whatever form of exercise you choose, it is highly recommended that you do so at your earliest convenience. This is truly a gem of a Forest Preserve. The beginning summer months is usually a slow period for the Men’s Club with few, if any events scheduled. And this year, whatever plans we may have had for an event obviously have been cancelled. The COVID-19 pandemic has even stricken the Annual Jack Rizman Golf Outing, which is one of the biggest and more successful of our events, that has officially been cancelled. Although this well attended event typically takes place on the last Sunday in August, it’s doubtful that we’ll be far enough along on the road to resuming normal activities to consider trying to stage this program on the originally planned date. Hopefully, with a little bit of luck this popular event may still show up later this year! It is with great pleasure that I turn the mantle of Men’s Club President over to Rob Lipka, who now will have the privilege of authoring future Men’s Club WORD articles. Good luck Rob! Respectfully, Ron Friedman, BJMC President

From The Editors In order for your article to be published in the next issue, we must have it at the synagogue by the 10th of the month! There will be no exceptions. This includes information on disk as well. We need your article as it is important to let the congregation know what your group is doing. Announcements should take the form of articles in The Word rather than separate flyers. The opinions expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Rabbi, Board of Directors or the editors.
