Rabbi’s Reflections LIVING WATERS Throughout our history, Jews have created rituals of sanctification that delineate special times. Shabbat is the most well-known, but each of our holidays is a celebration of times that differ from the usual and transform the everyday into the sacred. More so than other cultures, Judaism is distinguished by an exquisite appreciation for time. One of the longest observed rituals in Jewish life is

Immersion in water to sanctify time. In the biblical period, immersion separated days of impurity from those of purity in a number of contexts, particularly when Jews would travel to Jerusalem to celebrate the festivals. The use of a mikveh, a small immersion pool, for those purposes, became a standard feature of Jewish communal life. Such pools have been found in ancient sites throughout the land of Israel, including in the area just south of the Temple mount. Throughout the last two thousand years, wherever Jews established new communities, the construction of a mikveh was a primary concern. In our time, mikveh serves many purposes, each of them demarcating sacred time. Brides and grooms use mikveh prior to weddings as a sign of purity prior to entering huppah; converts to Judaism use mikveh to mark their transition into a covenant with God and becoming part of the

Jewish people; married women use mikveh to mark the end of their menstrual cycle and the renewal of marital relations each month. Others visit mikveh to mark the end of a period of illness or recovery from surgery, or to enter Shabbat feeling cleansed. The Community Mikveh of the Conservative Movement continues to serve all these needs. Established a number of years ago and housed at Beth Hillel Congregation B’nai Emunah in Wilmette, the mikveh was designed to be open to the entire community and stands as testament to our continued commitment to serving all who need it. The mikveh is not a money-making concern; Congregation Beth Judea is one of dozens of synagogues that provide the financial support required for it to stay in operation. But serving its many users takes much more. If you are inspired by its mission and want to make a real difference in Jewish lives by adding to that support, please contact me. We all have a stake in sustaining Jewish communal institutions and ensuring that mikveh’s living waters continue to sanctify times of transition for any Jew in the community. Rabbi Jeff Pivo

Congregation Beth Judea Mission Statement Congregation Beth Judea is a welcoming egalitarian synagogue whose mission is to create a warm and inviting home that serves the lifelong spiritual, educational and fellowship needs of our members. Consistent with the principals of the Conservative movement, we embrace Torah and our responsibility to serve and support the greater Jewish community, the community at large, the United States of American and the State of Israel. NOTES FROM THE CANTOR SUMMER MONTHS soon to arrive!! Many opportunities for service participation! Don’t let the fact that Shavuot is still weeks away fool you: summer is in the air! This is the perfect time to take up or revitalize synagogue skills. We have ample openings for both adults and young adults who have learned to leyn (read) Torah. Or perhaps you would like to lead some of our services: weekday mornings or evenings or on Shabbat? Do not let these abilities go to waste!! When was the last time you were called up to the Torah for an aliyah or a related Torah honor? We even have opportunities for learning and taking part in the unique chanting of the Book of Eicha which is read on Erev Tisha B’Av (the evening of August 13th this year). How can we make your role in our synagogue service more fulfilling, more meaningful? I am ready and happy to work with you and provide you with recordings to help strengthen you in whatever area you would like to participate – I just need to hear from you!! 5777 HIGH HOLIDAY TORAH – Each year we have a few openings for those who would like to prepare a Torah portion for Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur, depending on time and location. This is a wonderful opportunity, particularly for those who recently completed the Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah program, as well as others who have become Bar or Bat Mitzvah this past year. If you have been reading Torah on the Holidays these past years, please email me ASAP to confirm that you wish to do so again this coming fall, so I can hold that reading for you! 5777 HIGH HOLIDAY CHOIR – Another opportunity for those who are musically inclined is our High Holiday Choir that rehearses on Tuesday evenings beginning usually in early July. We would love to have you join us this year. If you are thinking about it, please contact either me (hazzanweisberg@bethjudea.org) or Marty Karlin (karlin0704@gmail.com) for details. The rehearsal schedule for the 2016 High Holiday season will be available soon! SHIRAT SHABBAT MUSIC ENSEMBLE – Do you play guitar or flute, violin or clarinet? Do you like to harmonize? We are always looking for music-minded members to enhance our Friday evening worship, enlivening our prayers, and bringing added warmth and joy as we welcome Shabbat with instrumental accompaniment. If you’re interested, please let me know! Jr. YAD SQUAD PROGRAM for YOUNG TORAH READERS! A special opportunity for accelerated, incoming Bet Students to learn how to read Torah with Hazzan Weisberg on Thursdays, 4:15 - 5:00 PM!! Students who enjoy learning Hebrew and music are invited to get a head start using the ancient musical phrases known as the Trope System. After getting to know the trope signs, students will have a chance to prepare small portions in the Torah for Gan Shabbat services in early 2017, for the Bet Class Shabbat, and Alef/Bet Kallah that spring. There is a one-time $60 fee for texts/recordings. Returning Jr. Yad Squad members will be able to continue their Torah-reading studies and receive new assignments in the 3:30-4:15PM time slot on Tuesdays before school. Please contact me at (847) 634-0777 or hazzanweisberg@bethjudea.org to sign up or for more info. Please respond by June 10, 2016 if you wish to participate in any of the above opportunities

President’s Message As we conclude our fiscal 2015/2016 year, I would like to thank all of our congregant families for supporting Beth Judea. Congregants are the foundation of our kehillah and without their support, whether it be volunteering or financial, there would be no Conservative congregation in Long Grove.

enable both young families and other new members to join our kehillah at a lower entry price point. Hopefully these programs will entice families who may have been considering membership in a Conservative congregation, but were unable to make the financial commitment. ARNIE GOLDBERG CBJ PRESIDENT

My goal, and the goal of our staff and executive committee, is to ensure that our congregation can remain sustainable well beyond the next 50 years. To accomplish this goal, we must have a strong membership base. Due to circumstances, many beyond our control, our total membership has been decreasing, as has the amount of dues we collect. It is not realistic to continue to raise our dues. Out of necessity, for the first time in five years we have had to increase dues for all member categories by $50 for families and $25 for single membership in order to balance our budget. We also cut expenses by asking more of our staff. It is now essential that we stabilize our membership and increase the number of young families joining our Congregation. This past year, working closely together, the membership committee, the finance committee, and an ad hoc dues committee created several new programs to

There is no guarantee that these programs will be successful. The price of membership is rarely the only factor as to why families join a Congregation. Everyone wants a place where they feel at home, a Congregation that is warm and welcoming, and where members perceive value. We are the ones who define CBJ. Our efforts make it warm and welcoming. The extra “hello” or “how are you” go a long way in making members feel they are part of our family. As members of CBJ, you are the best source of referrals for new members. Our membership committee has established a new and exciting referral program that should give every congregant an extra incentive to mention CBJ to neighbors, friends, or family I hope everyone has a relaxing, safe, and enjoyable summer.

B’nei Mitzvah Bios Rayna Nicole Finn will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, June 4, 2016.

Melissa Nusinow will be called to Torah as Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, June 11, 2016.

Rayna is a 7th grader at Daniel Wright Junior High School in Lincolnshire.

Melissa just completed seventh grade at Twin Groves Middle School. She

She enjoys riding horses, playing video games, and hanging out with her friends. She has attended Camp Chi in Lake Delton, Wisconsin for the past four summers, but is skipping this summer, opting instead to continue her Bat Mitzvah celebration with her family on Masada in Israel.

is on her middle school teams for soccer, volleyball, and track and field. She enjoys music and fashion and absolutely loves animals. She likes spending her downtime hanging out with her friends.

For her mitzvah project, Rayna is volunteering with Foster2Home, a charitable organization dedicated to finding permanent homes for adoptable dogs, many of which come from high-kill shelters. Foster2Home is close to her heart as it is where her family found their best friend, Cooper. Rayna would like to thank all those who have helped her achieve becoming a Bat Mitzvah including her tutor, Kim Abern, Anna Besser, Rabbi Pivo, Cantor Weisberg, and all the brilliant Hebrew school teachers who have guided her over the years.

SUPPORT BETH JUDEA BY PURCHASING GIFT CARDS Purchasing gift cards is one of the easiest ways to support Beth Judea. The Congregation earns a rebate from the vendors when you utilize the gift cards, so there is no cost to you. Gift cards can be utilized the same as cash, there are no restrictions. If you are shopping for groceries or clothes, going to a movie or traveling, you can help support our Congregation.

For Melissa’s mitzvah projects, she enjoys being a buddy in the BGRA Buddy Baseball program and helping pack and deliver holiday boxes for Maot Chitim. She has also donated her hair 3 times to make wigs for those who have lost their hair due to an illness. The first donation was to Locks of Love at age 3 and twice more since then to Pantene Beautiful Lengths. She wants to grow her hair out a bit more before making another donation within the next year. Melissa is looking forward to sharing this special day with her parents, Eddie and Elisa, her older brothers, Jake and Sam, and her grandmother, Judy Greenberg. They will all miss her Pops Michael, Grandma Sharon and Grandpa Abe, but all will be remembered in their hearts. Melissa and her family would like to thank Rabbi Pivo and Hazzan Weisberg for all of their support in helping her prepare for her Bat Mitzvah. Also, they appreciate all of the Hebrew school teachers who have helped to provide her a Jewish education. A special thank you goes to her tutor, Andrea Dickson, for her patience, encouragement, and support to help Melissa prepare for this very important day in her life.

Order forms for Gift Cards are available in the office or in the Lobby on Sunday morning. They can be purchased with cash, check, or credit cards (a 2.5% convience fee will be added when paying with a credit card)

Religious Education SHAVUOT Shavuot marks the finale of a seven-week journey which commemorates the Revelation and acceptance of the Torah on Mt. Sinai. Here are some great family activities. Camp Out or Camp-In: Leil Shavuot: On the third new moon after the Israelites had gone forth from the land of Egypt, they entered the wilderness of Sinai. The Israelites encamped by Mount Sinai while Moshe went up to God. Re-enact the Israelites camping at the foot of Sinai with your own camp out, weather permitting. Too cold or rainy? Pitch a tent indoors or build one with chairs and blankets. Invite friends for a sleepover, or sleep there with the whole family! Stay up late telling stories--from the giving of the Torah to Megillat Ruth to memories of camping. Wake up to the sound of a shofar or other horn blasts. Fruit Ripening Contest: Many of us are not able to watch fruit ripen on a tree during this or any other time of the year. In honor of Shavuot gather a few friends or family members and plan your own fruit ripening contest! Pick or buy about a dozen kinds of unripened fruit, such as pears, tomatoes, or bananas. Put two of each kind in the following places: - in a bowl with ripe fruit - on a sunny windowsill - in the refrigerator

- in a brown bag by itself - in a brown bag with an apple - a place of your choosing

Have each person choose which piece of fruit they think will ripen the quickest. Write this list down. Check your ripening fruit every day for a week (or more). Which one ripened the quickest? Why do you think this happened? Once you've declared the winner, consecrate the winning piece of fruit. Slice it up into fun shapes like a Star of David or bake it into a fancy dish for your holiday.

Bikkurim: Grain & Fruit: Shavuot marks the end of the grain season and the beginning of the fruit season. The following activities are connected to grain and fruit. -

Shewbreads: A Celebration of Wheat: Preparing "holy" bread in honor of the Sabbath is a great mitzvah. In honor of the wheat season and the Shavuot holiday, bake your own challah.

Local Flowers & Fruits: Go on a nature walk in a park or area of conservation land. See how many different colors you can find and how many of the seven species are available to pick or buy (Deuteronomy 8:8 details these: "A land of wheat and barley and vines and fig and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and [date] honey").

Youth

WHAT’S UP IN THE WORLD OF OUR YOUTH??? Tradition…. Tradition!!! Recently, the conservative movement ban on eating kitniyot during Passover has come to the forefront. The new information that has been put out has called into question the nearly 800 year old minhag of Ashkenazi Jews not eating kitniyot on Pesach. While I, personally, have my own beliefs about that specific debate, it did make me think about the bigger picture. Like Tevvye says in Fiddler On the Roof, “Tradition.”

In our CBJ youth departments we have a number of traditions. Some have been around since before I was a youth going through the programs, while others are newer traditions. Whether it be our mascot Baby J, our traditional purple BJUSY color, or a number of annual programs, tradition plays a huge part in what we do all the time at BJUSY. The CBJ youth department has a history and tradition of offering excellent programming at a variety of levels to youth of all ages. We try to come up with new and innovative programming every year while also continuing to offer some of the traditional programming that has made the program so great in the past. As we wind down another successful, award-winning year in our CBJ Youth Department, we want to pause to remember all those who have helped make it a huge success. YOU! Each and every one of you have helped make the youth department successful through your support in a number of ways. Please continue to support the CBJ youth programs in whatever way you can. Remember, you can always stay up to date with all things BJUSY throughout the entire year by visiting our new and improved website www.bethjudeausy.weebly.com, and you can sign up for membership by going to http://tinyurl.com/bethjudeayouth. Tikkun Leil Saturday Evening June 11, 2016 - 8:00 pm Join us for a night of study. At Shavuot we remember and re-enact the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. As we celebrate that event, we teach and learn deep into the night, staying awake in anticipation of the moment we came face to face with God. The evening will be full of learning with the clergy from Congregation Beth Judea and learned guest teachers.

From this best selling author, comes a tale of the paths that so easily lead us astray and the darkness within us all. The Devil in Jerusalem by Naomi Ragen is an intense thriller that explores the horrific abuse, both emotional and physical, that can be inflicted on cult followers. Based on a true, well-known Israeli court case, the story has been fictionalized to add depth to the plot. Although the novel centers around an ultra-Orthodox self-proclaimed religious leader and his acolytes, these characters could easily be replaced by other religious psychopaths

Men’s Club Men’s Club has had another phenomenal year. We have seen our membership increase by over 50% over these past two years. This year, we are fielding two softball teams! The Alternative Minyan is now meeting every Shabbat. Not only do we consistently have a minyan, we frequently have to bring in extra chairs. The participation in our programs and attendance at our events have been wonderful. Our many successful programs have also included a very well attended World Wide Wrap, an innovative Men’s Club Shabbat, Hearing Men’s Voices, Tap the Torah, and Steak and Scotch in the Sukkah. Our second Craft Beer and Burger dinner (Moo and Brew!), which as of this writing has not yet occurred, will hopefully be even more successful. CBJ Men’s Club hosted the Midwest Regional Man of the Year/Youth of the Year offsite when we honored Orin Rotman and Celia Pivo. Almost three hundred people attended the event, and the turnout from Congregation Beth Judea was extraordinary. Our Men’s Club members took a leadership role in the region and excelled. The mission of Men’s Club is to involve Jewish men in Jewish lives. Our goal is to promote leadership, innovation and community. Our commitment to the CBJ community and the greater Jewish community is demonstrated by our volunteers who assist the residents at the Lieberman Center every fourth Shabbat. We provide assistance to and from services and assist during services as well. Our Hanukkah candle program raises funds to help support our youth and provide siddurim for the Aleph class. We, along with Sisterhood, provided funds to support the hiring of Brad Engel to coordinate the Focus on Families programs. Our Yellow Candle Program helps to commemorate Yom Hashoah. This year Men’s Club members repainted the conference room and donated funds for its renovation. Next year, Men’s Club has again committed to keep the Melton School at Beth Judea by donating funds towards that end.

At our International Convention in Miami last summer, we received yet another Quality Club Award. We also received a Torch Award for our club’s retreat held in February 2015. We had expected only 10-12 men to attend this retreat. Twenty-nine men were there. We plan to hold another Beth Judea’s Men’s Club post Shabbat retreat in Lake Geneva in January 2017. We hope this next retreat will be even more successful. The Annual Dr. Jack Rizman Memorial Golf Outing is planned for August 28. Jack was a founding member of CBJ and a dynamic member of Men’s Club. His strong work ethic, good nature, and terrific sense of humor were an inspiration to those who knew him. The golf outing supports both Men’s Club and the Rizman Fund, which supports Jewish musical concerts and programs for our synagogue and the community. Please consider participating in this outing. You can support this program even if you do not golf by sponsoring a hole or attending the dinner which at this time is planned to be held at Lou Malnati’s. The success of our Men’s Club is due to our leaders and members. We are a group of men who have accomplished much while having fun and enjoying a strong sense of camaraderie. It is truly a team effort. Moving forward for the next two years we will be led by Jerry Sakol as our new president. Ron Friedman will serve as our new Secretary. Our new Treasurer is Robert Lipka. Craig Cohn will join our board as a Director at large. Sandy Ramas will also be joining our board and serve as our Coordinator of Volunteers at the Leiberman Center. Allen Harris, Louis Rabin and David Granoff will continue to serve as VP Programming, Ritual and Communications, respectively. With these new leaders Men’s Club will continue to play an important role in the Beth Judea community. We will continue to serve our congregation by meeting the educational, religious, and social needs of our members. Eric Yegelwel Men’s Club President, 2014-2016

BETH JUDEA COMMUNITY NEWS Adam Bender

Chavurah Aleph

Adam Bender became Temple of Aaron’s New Engagement Director. Adam just graduated from University of Minnesota with a degree in Finance. He has worked as the Youth Department's Youth Advisor for the past two years, taught Sunday and Wednesday School, and participated in TAXY programs.

Sandy Goldenberg Sandy Goldenberg was honored as Sisterhood’s Valued Volunteer at the Women’s League dinner honoring all the region’s valued volunteers.

On a bright sunny morning, May 22, 2016, Chavurah Aleph had the privilege of going to the Ida Crown Center in Skokie to assist an outdoor game hour for the special needs clients served by Keshet. Keshet means “rainbow,” and as we played hula hoops, ring toss, bean bag throw, Frisbee, and flew model airplanes, we came to realize what a rainbow Keshet is in the lives of those it serves. SHALVA “Its okay, the children aren’t effected” But what if you knew they were?

Did you Know……… SHALVA Collects Cellphones?

Shalva clients will often say that they can withstand their husband’s abuse as long as he never directs his anger toward their children. What many women don’t understand is that children are the silent victims of abuse and that they often repeat the behaviors they have seen.

For quite a few years now, Congregation Beth Judea has been generously collecting cell phones for SHALVA.

According to a recent study, over 90% of children are aware of domestic abuse in their home. These children are affected emotionally, cognitively, and physically. They are at great risk and often experience low selfesteem, shame, fear and guilt. Many distrust adults, fail to thrive or suffer from depression and anxiety. What can we do? The issue of domestic abuse is not just a women’s issue; it affects the entire family as well as our Jewish community. SHALVA offers free counseling to Jewish women who are or were in an intimate partner relationship. If you or someone you know needs our help, call 773-583-4673.

We thought you’d enjoy knowing a bit about how this process works. After we gather the phones you put into the collection box, we ship them to a recycling operation in Florida, Shelter Alliance . They pay us according to the “blue book”value of each phone. In processing the thousands of phones we send them every year, they wipe clean all your personal data and either refurbish your phones, recycle the parts or melt them down. Each year SHALVA receives around $40005,000 just by collecting your old or broken cellphones. All of these dollars go directly to help our clients. Recently Shelter Alliance has expanded their recycling program and now accepts Ipods, Ipads, and Readers. So, the next time you pass by the synagogue office and see the SHALVA collection box, think about all those old cellphones, ipads and ipods taking up space in your drawer or closet, and help us turn them into dollars for clients.

Upon three things the world is based: Upon Torah, Upon Divine Service, and Upon the Practice of Charity.

Cell Phone Drop-Off Box In Synagogue Office! Help domestic abuse victims by donating your old cell phones. Each phone raises money for domestic abuse crisis-counseling services in the Jewish community! There is a collection box in the synagogue office. The Word - June-July 2016

This includes information on disk as well. We need your article as it is important to let the congregation know what your group is doing. Announcements should take the form of articles in The Word rather than separate flyers. The opinions expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Rabbi, Board of Directors or the editors.
