FROM THE RABBI SHALOM As I prepare to say goodbye to CBJ, I want to tell you how pleased I am that you have succeeded in identifying the congregation’s needs and in finding new spiritual leadership to guide you.
I have enjoyed working with your wonderful Rabbi Emeritus, Hazzan, Executive Director, Education Director, teachers and staff, and appreciated the support of your devoted officers and board members.
I realize that there were plenty of things At this moment of transition, I am that I wasn’t able to do here, or didn’t reminded of a passage in the Talmud have time to do, or didn’t even realize RABBI DAVID KLATZKER which describes the greetings needed to be done. But a transitional exchanged by the watchmen in the rabbi serves a very different purpose ancient Temple as they changed shifts. than a settled rabbi. A transitional rabbi As the guards passed by each other, they would is like the friend you find after a breakup, a say, “We wish you love, we wish you divorce, or the death of a partner. He is the brotherhood, we wish you peace, we wish you person who helps you believe in yourself friendship.” As Randy and I leave the synagogue, again. That is what I have tried to do. we wish you the things that so many of you have given us—love, brotherhood, peace, and I have many outstanding memories of my year friendship. here: sharing special moments in your lives, When I leave CBJ in July, it will not be both happy and sad; feeling uplifted by your appropriate for me to discuss any synagogue participation in Shabbat and holiday services; business with you—I will no longer be your rabbi. enjoying the stimulation of your questions at But I will always be your friend. TISHA B’AV
TISHA B'AV: A TIME TO MOURN TISHA B’AV SCHEDULE
Saturday night, July 21, 2018, is the eve of Tisha B'Av -- the saddest day in the Jewish calendar. Erev Tisha B'Av memorial Services will be held at 8:30 PM on Saturday night at Congregation Beth Judea. The synagogue is located on IL Route 83 and Hilltop Road in Long Grove. The community is cordially invited to attend.
EREV TISHA B’AV SATURDAY, JULY 21, 2018 Tisha B’Av Services – 8:30 pm and
The Jewish holiday of Tisha B'Av commemorates the destruction of both Jewish Temples -- the first in 586 BCE by the Babylonians and the second in 70 CE by the Romans. Over the course of time, this holiday has become a time to mourn the persecutions of Jews throughout history, including the Spanish Inquisition and the Holocaust.
TISHA B’AV (Fast Day) SUNDAY, JULY 22, 2018 Shaharit – 9:00 am Minha/Ma’ariv – 6:45 pm PLEASE COME JOIN US FOR THESE COMMEMORATIVE SERVICES
Like Yom Kippur, Tisha B'Av is a major fast day, observed from sunset to sunset. On Tisha B'Av, as on Yom Kippur, observant Jews abstain from eating, bathing, wearing perfume and leather shoes and engaging in any kind of physical pleasure. During services on Saturday night the Book of Lamentations (Eikhah) will be recited and chanted by candlelight as the congregation sits along the steps of the bima or on the floor. This ritual is meant to elicit a reflective and forlorn mood. This powerful book laments the loss of the Temple and describes the desolation of Jerusalem and the suffering of the Jewish people in the five moving chapters of Eikhah.

Rabbi Klatzker came to CBJ at a critical time and helped our Board of Directors and our members to move on from the past and to look forward to the future. His guidance has helped us throughout our time together and helped to further the process to find new clergy. The presence of both Rabbi and his wife, Randy, in our congregation brought joy, learning, and stability to all.

CBJ Israel Committee presents: Heading Home: The Tale of Team Israel Directed by Seth Kramer, Daniel A. Miller, and Jeremy Newberger Sunday, July 8 - 6:00 PM at Congregation Beth Judea A stirring story of sports, patriotism, and personal growth! Heading Home charts the underdog journey of Israel's national baseball team competing for the first time in the World Baseball Classic. After years of defeat, Team Israel is finally ranked among the world's best in 2017, eligible to compete in this prestigious international tournament. Their line-up included several Jewish American Major League players―Ike Davis, Josh Zeid, and ex-Braves catcher Ryan Lavarnway―most with a tenuous relationship to Judaism, let alone having never set foot in Israel. Their odyssey takes them from Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, where they are greeted as heroes, to Seoul, where they must debunk their has-been, wannabe reputations.

Shiva Baskets
NEW!! WAYS & MEANS
Sunshine Fund
CBJ Business Directory Advertising Opportunity
The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws. Historically, the Board of Directors of Congregation Beth Judea has sent shiva baskets to the immediate family of Board members; parents, spouses, siblings and G-d forbid, children. We would like to extend this gesture to the entire congregation.

Religious Education Special Food Days to Enjoy Over the Summer (courtesy of JTeah.org)
Anna Besser Education Director
The calendar is filled with special days throughout the year. Put your own Jewish twist on these summer days while you enjoy special foods.
June 12 – International Falafel Day: Falafel is a particularly popular food in Israel. Take the opportunity to connect with Israeli cuisine by making your own falafel and enjoying it in a pita with hummus and tahini. You can find a recipe for falafel (along with some of its history) here.
June 17 – Eat Your Vegetables Day: In the Torah, it says that when God created people, God instructed them that they have domain over the Earth and that they have a responsibility to take care of the Earth (Genesis 1:2830, Genesis 2:15). On Eat Your Vegetables Day, make a salad with a variety of sustainably produced vegetables. Discuss how you can use the earth’s resources while continuing to protect those same resources. You can even start producing your own produce.
July 7 – International Chocolate Day: Chocolate is especially important on the Jewish calendar around Chanukah, when gelt (chocolate coins) is a favorite treat. As you enjoy some chocolate on International Chocolate Day, think about the Maccabees’ courage in standing up for what they believed was right and what you can do to make a difference in the world. You can even make your own chocolate with cocoa powder and common kitchen items. Check out one recipe here. If you would rather keep it simple look for Israeli chocolate at your local supermarket.
July 13 – French Fries Day: Believe it or not, French fries just might have originated in France (though Belgium also claims ownership). French fries have become a popular addition to sandwiches at falafel stands in Israel (though they are called chips there). Reprise your falafel sandwich from June’s Falafel day and include your own homemade French fries. You can find a recipe for French fries here.
The Word – June/July 2018

Religious Education Special Food Days to Enjoy Over the Summer (continued)
July 16 – National Ice Cream Day: The whole month of July is National Ice Cream Month, but July 16 has been specially set aside as a day to enjoy this tasty, cold treat. This year, National Ice Cream Day falls during the Three Weeks on the Jewish calendar. The Three Weeks are the days leading up to Tisha b’Av, when we commemorate the destruction of the first and second Beit Hamikdash (Temple in Jerusalem), which the Talmud tells us happened because the Jewish people were not being nice to each other. In commemoration of the Three Weeks, buy a tub of ice cream and work as a team to sculpt a model of the Beit Hamikdash. As you eat the sculpture, discuss how working together as a team helped the success of the project.
July 26 – National Bagelfest Day: This one kind of goes without saying. Bagels are a delicacy that were brought to North America by Polish Jews. While different places have their own methods of making bagels, can anyone debate the deliciousness of this boiled-then-baked, hole-inthe-middle bread? Take the opportunity to cook your own. While it might be a patshke (a time consuming, multi-step process, in this case), you can find one recipe here and a gluten-free one here. When your bagels are done, whether you enjoy lox, cucumber, or avocado on top, make sure to include a good schmear.
August 2 – Ice Cream Sandwich Day: In Israel, the ice cream sandwich is called a (קָ סֶ טָ הkaseta) because of its resemblance to a cassette; and it often contains half chocolate and half vanilla ice cream. Put on some Israeli music and enjoy eating a קָ סֶ טָ ה. You can even find Israeli hits from the 80’s, the heyday of the cassette tape (but you can still play the music through your favorite digital source).
August 3 – Watermelon Day: In the Torah, it says that watermelon was one of the foods that B’nei Yisrael missed from Egypt as they traversed the desert on the way to the Promised Land (Numbers 11:5). In fact, there is historical evidence that watermelon was cultivated in ancient Egypt as far back as the second millennium BCE. Celebrate the freedom of summer by eating some watermelon and remembering the Exodus from Egypt. Enjoy that we can eat watermelon as free people. Click here for some fun ways to present your watermelon.
August 5 – National Mustard Day: Whether you like Dijon, brown, yellow, or any of the many varieties of mustard, this is the day for you. Just as we can take mustard seeds and develop them into a variety of flavors that enhance our food in different ways, so too the Torah offers us multiple flavors of understanding that enhance our lives and our communities. Do a mustard taste test. (You can even make your own if you prepare far enough in advance.) As you taste different mustards, choose your favorite pasuk (verse) or narrative from the Torah and discuss the different flavors that emerge from it.

“This Is How It Always Is” by Laurie Frankel This is how a family keeps a secret…and how that secret ends up keeping them. This is how a family lives happily ever after…until happily ever after becomes complicated. This is how children change…and then change the world. This is Claude. He’s five years old, the youngest of five brothers, and loves peanut butter sandwiches. He also loves wearing a dress, and dreams of being a princess.

Laurie Frankel's This Is How It Always Is is a novel about revelations, transformations, fairy tales, and family. And it’s about the ways this is how it always is: Change is always hard and miraculous and hard again, parenting is always a leap into the unknown with crossed fingers and full hearts, children grow but not always according to plan. And families with secrets don’t get to keep them forever.

Men’s Club Ladies and Gentlemen of Beth Judea,
My term of being President of Men’s Club ends on the 30th of this month. It has truly been an honor to serve as President. There was no campaigning or funding to do, I was not really elected, but chosen. Very much like us, The Children of Israel; we are G-d’s chosen people. A great many people, in my opinion, think we were chosen to stand head and shoulders above the rest of humanity. I feel as a people, (not a race), we are an extraordinary group of human beings. Our contributions to mankind have been disproportionately beneficial to the population on a grand scale. This is our gift, and our burden. I believe we were chosen to bring humanity to humanity, as custodians of The Word, to lead with dignity, honor, truth, compassion, justice, charity, morality, and kindness to all. It’s quite a task; it’s not easy to be a Jew. Sometimes it appears we do not get the recognition, or appreciation, that is our due. On a much grander scale, Hashem knows how this feels— as we were made in His image, and many times in our teachings are told we are be like the Angels. I don’t consider myself to be an Angel, mind you, but my opinion of what it is to be president, is to strive to serve the Men’s Club as best I can. I mostly blame that Norm guy (no last names). He told me it was time to step up. I told him no, someone else was surely more capable or qualified. He is very persistent, but for a man as well rounded and intelligent as he is, he lacks the ability to conceptualize what the word “no” means. He promised as much support as I needed, and actually, he did deliver in a big way, but he was a bit vague on how many things I may be needed to do. I was really happy staying in the background and doing small things now and then. He had way too much confidence in me. Somehow, I managed to do a lot more than I thought I could, and I have to admit I did get a lot more out of these two years than I put in. There is still so much to do in Men’s Club, I do feel compelled to stay on for a little while, like maybe two years because I decided to try my hand at VP of Ritual, which I feel hugely underqualified to do, but hey, after being president, this should be easy.
The Word - June/July 2018
The month of June does not have a great many activities on the calendar. We are welcoming Rabbi Zimbalist at the end of the month and saying goodbye to Rabbi Klatzker at the same time. We all owe him a tremendous amount of thanks for guiding us through this transition. The place we were in when he first came here to where we are now has been an amazing journey. I was filled with great trepidation a year ago. The expression “it takes a village” certainly applies here, and I don’t know how we could have done it without Rabbi Klatzker’s help and guidance. We will certainly all miss him and Randy, a true woman of valor, and wish them well on their next endeavor. The following slate of officers and directors will be voted upon at the June 7 Men’s Club board meeting: President: Ron Friedman Executive VP/Treasurer: Rob Lipka Programming VP: Allen Harris, and Steve Limer Ritual: Jerry Sakol Membership and Communications: Brandt Rosen and David Granoff Secretary: Allan Friedlander Volunteer Coordinator at Lieberman: Sandy Ramras Directors at Large: Norm Kurtz, Fred Rabinowitz, Orin Rotman, Evan Rumack, Sandy Victor, Eric Yegewel, Mischa Schlichting 6-02-2018: Is the next Lieberman Shabbat. The Men’s Club assists the nursing home with the Shabbat service. This is a very rewarding activity we do monthly and is open to women as well. Please contact Sandy Ramras at Si1ramras1@mac.com. All menches are welcome! 6-07-2018: The next Men’s Club Board meeting at 8:00 pm The Men’s Club wishes all our members a safe and wonderfully memorable summer and firmly requests everyone’s safe return. Be well and I’ll see you in shul. Jerry Sakol Men’s Club President

From The Editors In order for your article to be published in the next issue, we must have it at the synagogue by the 10th of the month! There will be no exceptions. This includes information on disk as well. We need your article as it is important to let the congregation know what your group is doing. Announcements should take the form of articles in The Word rather than separate flyers. The opinions expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Rabbi, Board of Directors or the editors.
