Congregation Beth Judea Mission Statement Congregation Beth Judea is a welcoming egalitarian synagogue whose mission is to create a warm and inviting home that serves the lifelong spiritual, educational and fellowship needs of our members. Consistent with the principals of the Conservative movement, we embrace Torah and our responsibility to serve and support the greater Jewish community, the community at large, the United States of American and the State of Israel. 5

NOTES FROM THE CANTOR THE SUMMER OF `17 Many opportunities for service participation!

HAZZAN ROGER WEISBERG

Summer can be the perfect time to take up or revitalize synagogue skills. We have ample openings for both adults and young adults who have learned to leyn (read) Torah. Or perhaps you would like to lead some of our services: weekday mornings or evenings or on Shabbat? Do not let these abilities go to waste!! When was the last time you were called up to the Torah for an aliyah or a related Torah honor? We even have opportunities for learning and taking part in the unique chanting of the Book of Eicha which is read on Erev Tisha B’Av (the evening of Monday, July 31st this year).

How can we make your role in our synagogue service more fulfilling, more meaningful? I am ready and happy to work with you and provide you with recordings to help strengthen you in whatever area you would like to participate – I just need to hear from you!! 5778 HIGH HOLIDAY TORAH – Each year we have a few openings for those who would like to prepare a Torah portion for Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur, depending on time and location. This is a wonderful opportunity, particularly for those who recently completed the Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah program, as well as others who have become Bar or Bat Mitzvah this past year. If you have been reading Torah on the Holidays these past years, please email me ASAP to confirm that you wish to do so again this coming fall, so I can hold that reading for you! 5778 HIGH HOLIDAY CHOIR – Another opportunity for those who are musically inclined is our High Holiday Choir that rehearses on Tuesday evenings beginning usually in early July. We would love to have you join us this year. If you are thinking about it, please contact either me (hazzanweisberg@bethjudea.org) or Marty Karlin (karlin0704@gmail.com) for details. The rehearsal schedule for the 2017 High Holiday season will be available soon! SHIRAT SHABBAT MUSIC ENSEMBLE – Do you play guitar or flute, violin or clarinet? Do you like to harmonize? We are always looking for music-minded members to enhance our Friday evening worship, enlivening our prayers, and bringing added warmth and joy as we welcome Shabbat with instrumental accompaniment. If you’re interested, please let me know!

Jr. YAD SQUAD PROGRAM for YOUNG TORAH READERS! A special opportunity for accelerated incoming Bet Students to learn how to read Torah with Hazzan Weisberg on Thursdays, 4:15 - 5:00 PM!! Students who enjoy learning Hebrew and music are invited to get a head start using the ancient musical phrases known as the Trope System. After getting to know the trope signs, students will have a chance to prepare small portions in the Torah for Gan Shabbat services in early 2018, for the Bet Class Shabbat, and Alef/Bet Kallah that spring. There is a one-time $60 fee for texts/recordings. Returning Jr. Yad Squad members will be able to continue their Torah-reading studies and receive new assignments in the 3:30-4:15 PM time slot on Tuesdays before school. Please contact me at (847) 634-0777 or hazzanweisberg@bethjudea.org to sign up or for more info. Please respond by June 15, 2017 if you wish to participate in any of the above opportunities

Sunshine Fund The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws.

Congregation Beth Judea is once again hosting a USY on Wheels Bus HOUSING NEEDED ON THURSDAY, JUNE 29th Congregation Beth Judea is once again hosting a USY on Wheels Bus. USY on Wheels is a spectacular program that allows usyers to travel around the country in a Bus for 6 weeks and explore Judaism in a variety of ways and from a variety of places. This is made possible through congregations and congregants opening their doors and homes and hosting these USYers as they come through each city. This summer Congregation Beth Judea has the unique honor to once again be hosting a USY on Wheels Bus for one night on THURSDAY, JUNE 29th. We are therefore reaching out to you to open your home and take in at least two USYers (no USYers can be housed alone). If you are able to house USYers please click the link below to sign up with your information: Wheels Bus 2017 Host Family RSVP We will give preference to families that have USY or close to USY aged children around during the summer, however due to the large number of USYers that we will be hosting we are looking for anybody who can host regardless of if they have children around or not. Housing of the USYers will require them to be picked up from Congregation Beth Judea on THURSDAY night (they will have already been fed dinner). The USYers would then need to be fed breakfast on FRIDAY morning and dropped back off at the synagogue (this is generally early enough to get to work on time, typically around 7:30am). More information on exact timings as well as a detailed packet about hosting a USYer can be sent to anybody whose home is selected. Please RSVP ASAP by clicking the above link. If you have any questions at all please contact Marc Sender. Thank you in advance for all your help. B'Shalom Marc Sender - Youth Director Congregation Beth Judea

Religious Education SHAVUOT

Anna Besser Education Director

Shavuot celebrates the Jewish people receiving The Torah from G-d. Every year, Jews around the world commemorate this festival by reciting the Ten Commandments, eating lots of dairy products and cake to remember the introduction of ‘Kosher’ food, as well as eating the 'first fruits,’ which were the native foods of Israel. However, how can we incorporate all these commemorations into one task? By making a Bible cake of course!

Bible Cake: The ingredients for this cake are hidden in Bible verses. Study first, then bake, and eat.

Ingredients: A. B. C. D. E. F.

½ cup Judges 5:25 2 cups Jeremiah 6:20 2 tablespoons I Samuel 14:25 6 Jeremiah 17:11 1 ½ cups I Kings 5:2 2 teaspoons Amos 4:5

G. H. I. J. K. L.

4 teaspoons4 teaspoons II Chronicles 9:9 a pinch of Leviticus 2:13 ½ cup Judges 4:19 2 cups (chopped) Nahum 3:12 2 cups I Samuel 30:12 2 cups (chopped) Numbers 13:23

Directions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Cream together A, B, C and the yolks of D. Sift together E, F, G, and H. Combine the above together with I. Add J, L, and K. Add in stiffly beaten whites of D. Bake in a well-greased rectangular (13″ X 9″) pan at 325 degrees for an hour or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.

Men’s Club Ladies and Gentlemen of Beth Judea,

Tzedakah Fund

I know the official first day of summer is still several weeks away, but Memorial Day is a good enough sign for me. I hope all is well with all of you. I was told that this article is to be an article covering July also. By August 1st, we will already be back from the Men’s Club Convention. If you weren’t there, you don’t know what you missed. Please stop me and ask. I know I will have some great things to tell you about. Today is the second day of Shavuout. I wish everyone a Hag Sameach. Thursday the eighth is our next Men’s Club meeting. This coming Friday night, on the ninth of this month, is another Shirat Shabbat. We have musical instruments and several different melodies that I find inspiring and spiritually compelling. The month of June may seem like a slow month, but we are dedicated to our youth and their graduations. Best of luck and good health in all their endeavors. July is also a lighter month activity wise at our synagogue. I hope everyone has a great holiday celebrating our independence. We have a Men’s Club meeting on Thursday, July 6. July 9th (a Sunday), we are having a joint brunch with Temple Chai. The Men’s Clubs from both shuls are having a meal together for the first time. If you are interested, call me for details. It’s at Buffalo’s, which is under new management, or actually, the old management has returned. It should be a very interesting dynamic. July 19th is when the Convention starts. Seriously guys, this event will knock your socks off. I wish everyone good health and safe travels. Be well and I’ll see you in shul. Jerry Sakol Men’s Club President

The Word - June/July 2017

Hesed Committee

An Important Announcement CONGREGATION BETH JUDEA HESED (CARING) COMMITTEE The Hesed committee would like to know if you have any difficulties/problems that you would like to discuss with a knowledgeable individual. We have a group of congregants who have been trained or are professionals who would be able to provide a brief consultation with you in order to refer you on for more in-depth assistance. We are also thinking about starting some support groups. We would like to know what you feel your needs are. Please email Ellene Lammers at elammers@comcast.net or call Rabbi Pivo. FOR A LIST OF EMERGENCY HOTLINE NUMBERS, AGENCIES AND RESOURCES click here

We Would Like To Know WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records. Please call the synagogue office with this information. Do not assume that someone else will have notified the synagogue staff.
