Rabbi’s Reflections Scrolling, Scrolling, Scrolling...Rawhide! In this age of digital news, when information is instantly communicated around the world and often just as quickly forgotten, Britain recently announced plans to cease recording acts of Parliament on parchment. I admit to being initially surprised that it took them so long – parchment, really? – but then I thought again. Writing on parchment lasts thousands of years; writing on paper, only a few hundred; digital archives…we really don’t know yet. It’s possible we won’t be able to read PDFs and similar sources in just a few years. As traditionalists in Parliament have pointed out, without parchment much of what we know of history would have been totally, irretrievable lost. Among Jews, parchment has never lost its place. When printing was invented, our sacred texts and rabbinic commentaries certainly made their way onto paper, but the use of parchment made from animal skins for sacred scrolls has persisted for thousands of years. Torah scrolls are the most widely known, but parchment is also used for the scriptural passages inside tefillin, for the klaf we put inside our mezuzot, and for the scroll we will read on Purim (March 23/24), Megillat Esther. There is one other kind of scroll that uses parchment: a sefer haftarah. This scroll includes every haftarah read during the year on Shabbat and holidays and, like other sacred scrolls, is hand-written by a sofeir. I announced earlier in the year that, as part of our Me’ah campaign, we have commissioned such a scroll, and now we are making sponsorships of its sections available to our members. Unlike a Torah scroll, a haftarah scroll can include vowels, making reading it as easy as a printed text. Our scroll will indeed include vowels, as well as the trope marks which
readers use to sing the haftarah properly. In addition, we will be able to inscribe the names of families above the section they sponsor. This new scroll is not merely decorative. We will be using it regularly during Shabbat and holiday services, and encouraging all our readers to do so. It will be a beautiful addition to our religious life at Beth Judea, and a permanent record of b’nei mitzvah celebrations, anniversaries, and memorials of any kind. The funds raised by its sponsorships will go to our permanent endowment fund, which will in turn benefit our members for many years to come. The cost of a sponsorship is $6000, or $100 a month for 60 months. There are a finite number of sections available; if you are interested in sponsoring a section, please contact me or our Me’ah co-chairs, Natalie Solomon and Mitch Lerman. We will celebrate the writing of the sefer haftarah with a public ceremony, music and lunch on Sunday May 15 at noon. Mark your calendar now for what is sure to be a moving celebration of this new scroll, a permanent reminder of our devotion to our tradition, to our synagogue, and to our members’ life cycle events. Lest I forget, I also look forward to seeing all of you for the reading of the megillah on Purim, and at the 5th annual Purim Masquerade on March 12, at which we will honor Debbie and Arnie Bender as our Purim Queen and King. Hag Purim same’akh!

President’s Message Several weeks ago, Lee and I traveled to St Martin to get a reprieve from the cold wintery Chicago weather. On the first day of our trip, we were saddened to learn of the passing of a member of our CBJ family, Lauren Gordon. Lauren’s passing was very upsetting in light of her young age and the fact that Dave, her spouse, had passed away less than 12 months before. I want to formally extend my condolences on behalf of the entire Beth Judea Congregation to the Gordon family.
ARNIE GOLDBERG CBJ PRESIDENT
On the same day, we received a text informing us that Lee’s cousin had also suddenly passed. Ruth Melman was one of Lee’s closest relatives, and both Lee and I will miss her. Being in St. Martin, I had an opportunity to reflect. Most of us have lives that are overflowing with blessings, and we should thank God for them every day. But I believe it is the difficult times in our lives that make us stronger. Everyone is faced with challenges: family illness, loss of love ones, relationships that have ended. It is the challenges that make us kinder and more empathetic human beings.
I am extremely proud how our congregation, led by our clergy, assists congregants in difficult times. In addition to the clergy, the hesed committee is there to assist congregants in need. A new committee initiative, Helping Hands led by Larry Wolheim, will offer small everyday services to congregants. You can volunteer for either of these committees by calling the CBJ office. Hopefully, March will bring warmer weather. We have several events to look forward to this month. On March 6th, Orin Rotman and Celia Pivo will be honored as the Beth Judea Men’s Club’s Man and Youth of the Year at the FMCJ dinner. These
awards are more than well deserved. Orin been a constant figure at our Shabbat and holiday services for longer than most of us can remember. His enthusiasm on the Bima is contagious as he enlightens and enriches our services. Cecil Pivo has been an active participant and leader in both our CBJ youth group and the regional youth council. Cecil is energetic and vibrant, and her enthusiasm is passed along to her peers.
On March 12th, we will hold our annual Purim Masquerade event honoring Arnie and Debbie Bender as our King and Queen. Arnie and Debbie contribute so much of their time in so many different ways to Beth Judea. If there is any project or help we need, I know I can count on the Benders. If you have not already made reservations for either the FMCJ awards dinner or the Purim Masquerade I hope you will reconsider your decision. I also would like to mention one additional event at Congregational Beth Shalom on Thursday evening March 3rd, 2016 at 8:00PM. As part of the distinguished speakers program, CBS will be presenting Rabbi Ed Feinstein speaking on “A history of Chutzpah.” Rabbi Feinstein is the senior Rabbi of Valley Beth Shalom in Encino, California. I heard Rabbi Feinstein speak at the USCJ Convention last November; he is witty, humorous, and an engaging lecturer. I have been following Rabbi Feinstein’s weekly sermons since November. I know you will find this an enjoyable evening. The program is free and open to the public. Wishing everyone a happy, healthy and warmer March Arnie Goldberg President CBJ

TIME SENSITIVE RESPONSE REQUIRED BY TUESDAY, MARCH 1, 2016
Join the Beth Judea Board of Directors!! IMPORTANT NOTICE Dear Congregants, Have you ever considered being on Congregation Beth Judea's Board of Directors? It is that time of year when our Nominating Committee convenes to fill the seats of retiring Board Members, and we're looking for you! Why did I become a Board Member? It was years ago, when my youngest children were in Hebrew School, complaining and whining about it often. At that point, I was pretty much a three-day-a- year Jew. However, I have tried to instill in my kids that it is easy to complain, but much more difficult to affect change. So, I told them that I would apply to the Board of Directors in order to be their voice.
My favorite part of serving on the Board has been working on committees. In these smaller groups, I have had my voice heard and valued, I have made friends, I have gained transferable skills, and I have learned more about Judaism. Why should you become a Board Member? It is my hope that Congregation Beth Judea means something special to you; a house of worship, a house of learning, and a home where you can share your joys and sorrows. As a Board Member, you would be giving back to this community that has so much to offer you. Involvement can also be a gift to yourself. It can provide an opportunity for personal growth and exploration. As Hillel said, “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am not for others, what am I? And if not now, when? Our constitution allows all members in good standing to be eligible for service on the Board of Directors. The Board has the authority for guiding many aspects of our Congregational life, some of those including oversight of our Professional Staff, budgeting, finance matters and establishment of policies related to Synagogue operations all while serving as goodwill ambassadors to our greater community. Board Members are also required to serve as an active member of a standing committee, usher at services, and be an active participant in our synagogue's programs. Please, if you are interested, we ask that you simply answer the following questions to begin the process and assist the committee: 1. How long have you been a member of CBJ? 2. What, if any committees have you previously served on - or are presently serving? 3. Why do you have a desire to be of service as a member of the Board of Directors? 4. What areas of the synagogue are you most interested in? How would you envision participating in pursuing that interest? Your response should be sent via email to me, Debbie Kreisman Dubin, at debdubin-cbj@hotmail.com, by Tuesday, March 1, 2016. If you have any questions, I can be reached at home (847) 913-9789 or cell (847) 7389799. Sincerely, Debbie Kreisman Dubin, Nominating Committee Chairperson, Immediate Past President

Planned Giving From Generation to Generation “Making a Difference in the Lives that Follow” The following article is Reprinted with permission from JUF News It is a very informative article written by Steven Wander of JUF. Even though the article discusses donating to JUF the same strategy for your charitable giving and paying dues is appropriate for Congregation Beth Judea. ARNIE BENDER CBJ VP of PLANNED IVING
“A great
opportunity extendedpermanently! AT THE END OF 2015, Congress reinstated the IRA charitable rollover and extended it for the future. This is a great opportunity to reduce your taxes by making a gift from your IRA to a qualified charity each year. The provision allows individuals 70½ and older to transfer tax-free up to $100,000 from their ndividual Retirement Account (IRA)—including to the JUF Annual Campaign or The Centennial Campaign. We recommend that you determine with your tax advisor if this provision will benefit you. The requirements are as follows: • Individuals age 70 1/2 or older may take advantage of this law; • Qualified charitable distributions up to $100,000 may be made only to a qualified charitable organization such as the JUF or Jewish Federation; • Distributions must be made directly to the charitable organization through the plan administrator; and • Distributions may not be made to a donor advised fund, supporting foundation, split interest trust or charitable gift annuity. Qualified distributions receive the following benefits: • The distribution will not be treated as a taxable distribution to you (but you would not receive a charitable deduction for the distribution amount); • Taxable assets will be removed from your estate; • Gifts qualify for IRA required minimum distributions; and • Most importantly, your generosity will help Jews in need.
The Word - March 2016
Who can take advantage of an IRA charitable rollover? 1. If you are one of the approximately two-thirds of taxpayers who take the standard deduction (and thus cannot deduct their charitable gifts), you can get the equivalent of a deduction by making gifts directly from your IRA to qualified charities and not being taxed on the income. 2. If, by taking a distribution from your IRA, you will be placed into a higher tax bracket, you may wish to consider an IRA charitable rollover. This becomes more important as many benefits such as social security can be reduced or eliminated as adjusted gross income increases. 3. If you bump into the adjusted gross income ceilings on the amount of charitable gift deductions you take, you can use your IRA to make additional gifts. Because you will not be taxed on the distributions, you have the equivalent of additional charitable deductions. 4. If you have charitable deductions you could not take in prior years, you can use the carried over amount in the current year, and instead make charitable gifts from an IRA. Many individuals delay taking IRA withdrawals until November or December of each year—there is no need to wait. You can direct a payment at any time to JUF or Jewish Federation for the Annual Campaign or The Centennial Campaign. It is a very convenient way to give and will benefit the Jewish community immediately. Contact the custodian of your IRA today to take advantage of this permanent way to give. To learn more about how distributions from your IRA may fit into your charitable giving, contact me or any of the Legacies and Endowments professionals at (312) 357-4853 or legacy@juf.org. Steven A. Wander is the senior director of Gift Planning & Endowments for Legacies & Endowments department of the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago.”

Religious Education Just Give, Give, Give It is no secret that we are creatures of habit. Our days are filled with consistent rituals; our Jewish life is no different. Judaism has many things to say about the intricacies of ritual. So it is interesting that of all the daily rituals which are time-bound, there is one noticeably absent – tzedakah. Of course, we are obligated to give tzedakah on a regular basis, and there are the laws about the tithing (giving a
ANNA BESSER EDUCATION DIRECTOR
10% to charity each year). Tzedakah is a crucial element of the Jewish experience, but if tzedakah is such an important Mitzvah, why is there no time-bound, daily ritual associated with it?
There are 2 Jewish holidays associated with the ritual of tzedakah: Yom Kippur and Purim. On Purim we are clearly commanded to give tzedakah. Throughout the festivity of the day, we give “matanot la'evyonim,” (gifts to the poor). In Megillat Esther 9:22, it states, “The days wherein the Jews had rest from their enemies, and the month which was turned unto them from sorrow to gladness, and from mourning into a good day; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, and of sending portions one to another, and gifts to the poor.” Matanot la’evyonim might be one of the hardest mitzvot to fulfill because to do it properly means it must be done person to person, hand to hand. In our modern world, it might hard to accomplish this task. If we find ourselves unable to give gifts to needy individuals on Purim day, we should strive to give tzedakah to at least one charitable organization that supports the poor in our community year-round.
The Word - March 2016
But why of all our holidays does Purim come to be associated with tzedakah? Purim embodies our complicated relationship with charity throughout the year. If we simply waited around for the perfect time to give tzedakah, perhaps we would never give at all. Therefore, why not tie the mitzvah of giving to the day which represents not order, but chaos; not perfection, but randomness.
The lesson is clear – no matter the day, no matter the circumstance, just give, just give, just give. (http://www.haaretz.com/a-lesson-of-charity-in-thefrivolity-of-purim.premium-1.505724)

Bible Stories You Haven’t Heard Taught by Rabbi Emeritus Lifshitz
Who were Jeptha, Amaziah, and the daughters of Zelophed? Their stories are just some of the lesser known events found in the Tanach (the Bible) that we will discuss. Among others will be those of Rachav and Yael, courageous non-Jews; of Absalom and his rebellion against King David; of Ahab and Jezebel and their evil acts along with Elijah’s response, and of Josiah, a young king who sparks a reformation of Israelite religion and a revival of the nation. Besides finding episodes interesting, we will also seek to find in them lessons relevant for our own time. Monday Evenings; 8:00—9:00 pm April 11 – 25, 2016
Melton: Jewish Mysticism and Kabbalah: Secret Knowledge in Judaism Taught by Rabbi David M. Rosenberg
Despite the public chatter about Kabbalah, for many, this important aspect of the Jewish tradition remains a “closed book”. This course presents the rich history of Jewish mysticism, along with understandings of many of the texts that have been so central to that tradition speaking to the deepest mysteries of human existence and to many of life’s eternal universal questions. Men’s Club Men’s Club Shabbat is scheduled for March 26, 2016. In the past, Men’s Club Shabbat has been meaningful, spiritual and fun! Last year we had over thirty men participate in the service. Please consider attending the service and even participating in Men’s Club Shabbat. Depending on your skills and comfort level, you can do as much or as little as you would like. If you have not yet been contacted, please email Lou Rabin (louleemg@aol.com), who is coordinating Men’s Club Shabbat. Eat, drink and be merry. On Monday evening, January 25, Men’s Club hosted another get together at the Beer Market in Vernon Hills. Those who attended enjoyed good beer, camaraderie, and free pizza. About twentyfive men attended the get together. We discussed our upcoming softball season and hope to be able to field two teams for the 2016 season. We also discussed having another Craft Beer and Burger event (Moo and Brew!) on Sunday, May 22. Save the date! More information will be available soon.
This is a vital, important, and symbolic way to show our solidarity and resolve that we will never forget! The World Wide Wrap was held on Super Bowl Sunday, February 7. It was much more exciting and interesting than the Super Bowl (which may not be saying much). We had a wonderful turnout. The program was informative, engaging, and fun. Norm Kurtz and Orin Rotman did a great job in teaching us about tefillin and how to wrap (and rap!). Thank you to the following men who assisted the dalet class in the Build-A-Pair program in preparation for the World Wide Wrap: Orin Rotman, Rob Lipka, Sandy Victor, Evan Rumack, and Jerry Sakol. After the wrap we were treated to a Sunday morning brunch thanks to David Granoff, Sandy Ramas, Alan Marcus, Fred Rabinowitz, Manny Velazquez, and Sarit Elran.
Yom Hashoah begins the evening of May 4, 2016. Men’s Club is scheduled to pack Yellow Candles on Sunday, April 3. Routes will be mapped out and distributed to our members who will deliver the candles to most of the members of Congregation Beth Judea. This process will be similar to how the Hanukah candles were successfully distributed. The memory, lessons, and magnitude of the Holocaust inconceivably continue to fade away and are even denied by some as having occurred. We commemorate this meaningful, historic occasion with the Federation of Jewish Men’s Club Yellow Candle Program.
It has been one year since our Beth Judea’s Men’s Club retreat was held at the Geneva Ridge resort in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. We had almost thirty men from Congregation Beth Judea’s Men’s Club attend the retreat. We learned about our Jewish rituals, prayers, Israel, Men’s Club, as well as something about each other. Most of all, we had fun! If you thought that our club’s post Shabbat retreat was worthwhile, imagine what a retreat would be like when you get members from over a dozen different Men’s Clubs! From May 13-15, 2016 the Midwest Region of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs will hold their 2016 Regional retreat at the Starved Rock Lodge and Conference Center in Oglesby, IL. This will be a memorable weekend of physical, spiritual-health and wellness. Programming includes inspiring motivational speakers, lively discussions, traditional and alternative services, swimming and hiking through scenic Starved Rock State Park. There will be plenty of fun and ruach for everyone. Please feel free to contact me for more information. This is a unique not-to-be missed event.

Contact Allen Harris at allen.Harris@tyson.com if you would like to play for a winning team. You must be a member of Men’s Club in order to play.

INTERFAITH COUNCIL My name is Joanne Dicker. I am president of the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council. (IFC). I would like to introduce you to the Interfaith Council and its activities. The members of the IFC are Congregation Beth Am, Congregation Beth Judea, Congregation B’nai Shalom, Hope Lutheran Church, Kingswood United Methodist Church, Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Shir Hadash Synagogue, St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church, St. Mary Catholic Church, St. Viator High School, and Temple Chai. We have four food pantries operated by Beth Am, Kingswood United Methodist Church, St. Mary Catholic Church and St. Alphonsus Liguori Church. The IFC was formed 25 years ago as a result of clergy and community members speaking out to condemn anti-Semitic vandalism to the JCC in Buffalo Grove. Since then, local churches, synagogues, and our newest member, St. Viator High School, have gathered together to foster understanding among those of different faiths, encourage cooperative social service efforts, and serve as an ethical and moral voice promoting the positive growth and unity of our community. Our annual programs include: 1.
“Stamp out Hunger” (May 7, 2016) in conjunction with the post office. The post office collects non-perishable food from residents. The food is then distributed among our four food pantries.
2.
A June non-perishable food collection drive with the BGRA.
3.
“I walk against hunger” (June 26, 2016). A family 5 K walk to raise awareness of hunger in the suburbs and to collect food and funds for our food pantries.
4.
A summer service trip covering 4 days to areas in need of rebuilding (July 20-24, 2016). In the past, we have helped tornado devastated communities in Brookport and Washington, IL. This year, we will be going to Detroit.
5.
National Night Out: (August) A summer food drive with the Park District.
6.
Buffalo Grove Days: (September) A collection food and donations during the parade.
7.
Thanksgiving celebration (November 20, 2016) An interfaith service sharing our common beliefs, praising G-d through song and prayer, and gathering together as a community.
Please join us by participating in our many activities. If you have any questions, please contact me at joannedicker@comcast.net or your other representative, Helene Fox, at: helene125125@gmail.com or visit our website at: http://www.northwestsuburbaninterfaith.org.

YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE We firmly believe that reaching out to others benefits not only the recipient, but the person providing help as well. This is, without a doubt, a win-win situation for all involved. If you are interested in making a difference, please contact one of the Hesed (Caring) committee members below: Rabbi Pivo Ellene Lammers Wendy Wunsch Evan Rumack
Did You Know... Do you know of information that would be of interest to our congregants? If so, please let us know.
We Would Like To Know WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records. Please call the synagogue office with this information. Do not assume that someone else will have notified the synagogue staff.
HESED COMMITTEE LIFE IN ISRAEL THE GOODMAN’S BLOG Howie and Suzanne Goodman were valued members at Beth Judea until they decided to make aliyah in 2009. The Goodmans have agreed to provide us with a blog on their experiences as new olim in Israel. Though we continue to miss the Goodmans, we can all look forward to reading about their adventures in Israel through the blog. To learn more about the Goodman’s life in Israel .click here to share their experience.
An Important Announcement CONGREGATION BETH JUDEA HESED (CARING) COMMITTEE The Hesed committee would like to know if you have any difficulties/problems that you would like to discuss with a knowledgeable individual. We have a group of congregants who have been trained or are professionals who would be able to provide a brief consultation with you in order to refer you on for more in-depth assistance. We are also thinking about starting some support groups. We would like to know what you feel your needs are. Please email Ellene Lammers at elammers@comcast.net or call Rabbi Pivo. SHALVA “Its okay, the children aren’t effected” But what if you knew they were?
Did you Know……… SHALVA Collects Cellphones?
Shalva clients will often say that they can withstand their husband’s abuse as long as he never directs his anger toward their children. What many women don’t understand is that children are the silent victims of abuse and that they often repeat the behaviors they have seen.
For quite a few years now, Congregation Beth Judea has been generously collecting cell phones for SHALVA.
According to a recent study, over 90% of children are aware of domestic abuse in their home. These children are affected emotionally, cognitively, and physically. They are at great risk and often experience low selfesteem, shame, fear and guilt. Many distrust adults, fail to thrive or suffer from depression and anxiety. What can we do? The issue of domestic abuse is not just a women’s issue; it affects the entire family as well as our Jewish community. SHALVA offers free counseling to Jewish women who are or were in an intimate partner relationship. If you or someone you know needs our help, call 773-583-4673.
We thought you’d enjoy knowing a bit about how this process works. After we gather the phones you put into the collection box, we ship them to a recycling operation in Florida, Shelter Alliance . They pay us according to the “blue book”value of each phone. In processing the thousands of phones we send them every year, they wipe clean all your personal data and either refurbish your phones, recycle the parts or melt them down. Each year SHALVA receives around $40005,000 just by collecting your old or broken cellphones. All of these dollars go directly to help our clients. Recently Shelter Alliance has expanded their recycling program and now accepts Ipods, Ipads, and Readers. So, the next time you pass by the synagogue office and see the SHALVA collection box, think about all those old cellphones, ipads and ipods taking up space in your drawer or closet, and help us turn them into dollars for clients.
Upon three things the world is based: Upon Torah, Upon Divine Service, and Upon the Practice of Charity.
Cell Phone Drop-Off Box In Synagogue Office! Help domestic abuse victims by donating your old cell phones. Each phone raises money for domestic abuse crisis-counseling services in the Jewish community! There is a collection box in the synagogue office. The Word - March 2016
