Rabbi’s Reflections PURIM’S TWO JEWS Jews the world over celebrate Purim this month by reading megillat Esther on the 14th day of Adar (the evening of March 11th and the morning of the 12th this year). The story of Esther teaches us several things about identity, specifically about Jewish identity. There are two modes of Jewish identification in the story, that of Esther and that of her cousin (yes, cousin)

to one another, regardless of the form that our Jewishness takes. As in the case of Mordecai and Esther, differences among us as Jews can be a positive value: each type has its role to play in ensuring the continuity of the whole. .

We see that dynamic in play in American Jewish life. While the beliefs Rabbi Jeff Pivo and practices of Conservative Judaism Mordecai. President’s Message One of the benefits of being retired is that you have few time constraints. You can travel at will. Over the last five years, Lee and I have visited cities all over the world. We always try to visit the historic synagogue in the area. ARNIE GOLDBERG CBJ PRESIDENT Amongst my three favorites are the three oldest synagogues in the United States: The Touro Synagogue in Newport Rhode Island; Kahal Kodash Beth Elohim in Charleston South Carolina; and Congregation Mickve Israel in Savannah Georgia. These synagogues represent more than just buildings. They depict the history of the Jewish people in America from colonial days. When visiting these synagogues, I was made aware of the important role the Jewish community has played in the founding and development of our country.

President’s Message In each case, these historic buildings could not have been maintained solely by the dues collected from their congregants, but needed the generous support of the entire Jewish community so these historic buildings could be preserved and continue to tell the Jewish story. Beth Judea, while not one of the early synagogues in the U.S., is one of early congregations in the Northwest Chicago suburbs, starting forty-nine years ago in the Kingswood Methodist Church on Dundee Road. We, as a congregation, tell the story of the Jewish community in this area. Our growth from a small Jewish kehilla in Buffalo Grove and Arlington Heights to a much larger and more vibrant Jewish community that now also encompasses Vernon Hills and Mundelein shows a migration from various neighbors of Chicago to Skokie to the North Shore and then westward. Over the years our congregants have formed fond memories and nurtured lasting friendships. However, like the three oldest congregations in the U.S., we cannot continue to survive on just dues. We depend on the generous support and donations of our congregants. There are many ways to contribute to CBJ: make a Me’ah contribution, donate to one of philanthropic funds, buy a leaf on the Tree of Life to commemorate a life cycle event, recognize a parsha on our Torah board, support and attend a Beth Judea fund raising event, recognize or make a planned gift to CBJ. It is our responsibility to pass our Jewish heritage to the next generation. Wishing everyone a great March. I hope to see you at Purim Palooza and Camp CBJ.

Congregation Beth Judea Mission Statement Congregation Beth Judea is a welcoming egalitarian synagogue whose mission is to create a warm and inviting home that serves the lifelong spiritual, educational and fellowship needs of our members. Consistent with the principals of the Conservative movement, we embrace Torah and our responsibility to serve and support the greater Jewish community, the community at large, the United States of American and the State of Israel.

The primary purpose of the Shiva tradition, or "sitting Shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong Shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the Shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws. Historically, the Board of Directors of Congregation Beth Judea sent Shiva baskets to the immediate family of Board members; parents, spouses, siblings and G-d forbid children. We would like to extend this gesture to the entire congregation. As chairman of the Sunshine Fund donations may be sent to Mitch Hecht at 215 S. Evergreen Avenue, Arlington Heights, IL 60005 or to the shul attention Lisa Neiman.

B’nei Mitzvah Bios Alyse Lichtenstein will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, March 4, 2017. She is excited to share this simcha with her friends and family who will be coming from near and far to attend this event. Alyse is a seventh-grade high honor roll student at Hawthorn Middle School North in Vernon Hills. She juggles a very busy schedule. Along with school, she competes as a USAG Level 7 gymnast, plays volleyball for her school’s 7th grade team, plays viola in her school orchestra, attends Hebrew school at CBJ with her friends known as the “Jew Crew,” and has been preparing for her Bat Mitzvah. A few weeks after her Bat Mitzvah, she will compete at the Illinois Level 7 State gymnastics meet. For Alyse's mitzvah project, she will be working with The Chesed Fund. She will be taking several friends to volunteer in mid-April. Until then, she will be collecting both monetary donations and nonperishable kosher food items. She encourages friends, family, and congregants to contribute to this worthy cause and will have a collection box in the synagogue office from March 5th through April 5th. Alyse is grateful for the friends she has made in middle school, Hebrew school, and gymnastics. She would especially like to thank her parents Margaret and Todd and her younger sister Sophie for their love and support in helping her reach this milestone. The Lichtenstein family would like to thank Hazzan Weisberg for his tutoring and assistance – both in the past nine months leading up to the Bat Mitzvah and for the Yad Squad program that started Alyse on the road to reading Torah. She would also like to thank Rabbi Pivo, Anna Besser, and all of her Hebrew school teachers.

Olivia is ecstatic to share this day with her parents Marcy & Jon, her brother Logan, and devoted grandparents Gaga-Renee Blustein and Lois & Jerry Soble. She will also celebrate with her loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. She will especially be missing her Papa on this day. Olivia and her parents would like to give special thanks to Rabbi Pivo, Hazzan Weisberg, Kim Abern, Ryan Sussman, Anna Besser, and all her Hebrew school teachers who helped her prepare for this remarkable day.

Youth WHAT’S UP IN THE WORLD OF OUR YOUTH??? Haman… AHHHH As we begin the month of March, everything is in full swing in the CBJ youth department. With a busy month planned, we are looking at ways to increase engagement any way we can. This month alone, we have a babysitting night, a joint open house with the Hebrew School, a Purim Party with the entire synagogue community, a Purim carnival for the entire community, a Tikun Olam Prom hosted at CBJ, a celebration of our youth concert, the Man of the Year/Youth of the Year Luncheon, and tons of other programs. The Jewish holiday of Purim incorporates in the tradition of booing and making noise loudly every time the name “Haman” is mentioned. Sometimes I wonder about the strange coincidence that this holiday lands at a time when everybody feels the need to scream out loud. With schools at the most difficult part of the year, preparations for the end of the school year ongoing, financial places attempting to wrap up their taxes from the previous fiscal year, winter rolling onto its final month, and so much more, this is the time of year when we all need to shout out loud. This year, CBJ has given a great outlet for that. Instead of just reading the megillah and celebrating as we usually would, we have taken advantage of the fact that Purim is on a Saturday night, and a wonderful Purim Party has been planned for the entire synagogue community. I strongly encourage everybody to take advantage of this night. Whether it is for the fun of dressing up, the retelling of the story to pass down to your children, or simply the need to have an excuse to scream and shout and make as much noise as you can at a very hectic time of the year, come and do it with us! Religious Education Did You Know This About Purim?

Anna Besser Education Director

 Esther was a vegetarian. According to midrash, while Queen Esther lived in the court of King Ahasuerus, she followed a vegetarian diet consisting largely of legumes so that she would not break the laws of kashrut. For this reason, it is a tradition to eat beans and peas on Purim.  There should be a go-between in delivering your mishloach manot. In the Book of Esther, it stipulates that we should send gifts to one another, not just give gifts to each another. So, send your packets of goodies to a friend via a messenger. Anyone can act as a go-between.

 The Book of Esther is the only biblical book that does not include G-d’s name. The Book of Esther also makes no reference to the Temple, to prayer, or to Jewish practices such as kashrut.  Hamantaschen might have been designed to symbolize Haman’s hat — or his ears or pockets. Some say these cookies represent Haman’s ears, and refer to a custom of cutting off a criminal’s ears before his execution. Another theory is that the three corners represent the three patriarchs whose power weakened Haman and gave strength to Esther to save the Jews. Yet another theory: Because the German word tasche means “pouch” or “pocket,” the cookies could signify Haman’s pockets and the money he offered the king for permission to kill the Jews.  In 1945, a group of American GI’s held belated Purim services inside a confiscated castle. A Jewish chaplain “carefully arranged the candles over a swastika-bedecked bookcase in the main dining room,” and Jewish soldiers explained to their Christian comrades in attendance “about Haman and why it was so fitting that Purim services should be held in a castle that a Nazi propagandist had confiscated from the Jews.  The Jewish calendar has a regular leap year with two months of Adar (but only one Purim, which falls during the second Adar). To ensure that the holidays remain in their seasons, the Jewish calendar gets adjusted to accommodate the 11-day difference between the lunar and solar years. A formula was created to know in which years a leap month would be added: every 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th, 14th, 17th, and 19th year over a 19-year period.  Purim is celebrated one day later inside walled cities than it is everywhere else. The Book of Esther differentiates between Jews who lived and fought their enemies for two days within the walled, capital city of Shushan and those who lived in unwalled towns, where only one day was needed to subdue the enemy. Accordingly, if a person lives in a city that has been walled since the days of Joshua (circa 1250 B.C.E.), as Shushan was, Purim is celebrated on the fifteenth of the month of Adar, a day referred to as “Shushan Purim.”

Like many young Americans, Jonathan Safran Foer spent much of his teenage and college years oscillating between enthusiastic carnivore and occasional vegetarian. As he became a husband, and then a father, the moral dimensions of eating became increasingly important to him. Faced with the prospect of being unable to explain why we eat some animals and not others, Foer set out to explore the origins of many eating traditions and the fictions involved with creating them. Sisterhood It’s no secret that you should happy on Purim! But why do we celebrate the threat of near extinction with such silliness and joy? Maybe it’s a complete picture of human emotions. The importance of dealing with stress and hardship with laughter has been recognized since biblical times, and clinical research shows the positive influence of laughter on humans. They’ve even developed laughter therapy! Laughter decreases depression, increases mental acuity, improves memory, and positively effects sleep patterns. Daily laughter decreases stress, improves cardio-vascular function, increases immunity, and helps to relieve pain. Research shows that laughter with others is more effective that laughing alone. The data on sharing humor indicates not only better relationships, but an improved self-image and ability to cope with stress. March 11 - Join us for a good laugh as Sisterhood and Men’s Club entertain you with a Purim Shpiel, during Purim-Palooza. March 26 - Our annual Passover Wine tasting. Be sure to come and sample the world-wide selection of Passover wines and place your orders to receive great discounted prices in time for the holiday.

March 30 - share meaningful time and some laughter with friends at “My Fair Seder”, as we explore the connections between My Fair Lady and the story in the Haggadah. And for those of you interested in discussing issues related to world wide food production and the ethics of eating animals, Rabbi Pivo will be leading a book discussion for five Tuesdays in a row, beginning Feb 14 thru March 14th. The book, “Eating Animals” by Jonathan Safran Foer, is an exploration of the history, marketing and environmental & ethical issues around eating meat. It may not turn you into a vegetarian, but it will certainly provide for some very stimulating discussions.

Please be sure to visit our face book page at Congregation Beth Judea Sisterhood and like us. We hope to share more activities, pictures, and reviews as we learn to navigate social media in order to communicate better with each of you!

Be Happy it’s Adar! We hope to see you soon. Kitty and Heidi, your Sisterhood Co-presidents Contact Kitty Hoffman mskitty.hoffman@gmail.com, or Heidi Sakol heidis121@yahoo.com for more information or to get involved.

Men’s Club Ladies and Gentlemen of Beth Judea, there is a phrase I’ve been hearing a lot lately. It’s March Madness. Since I’m not quite sure what that is, I can only assume it refers to Purim. A joyous holiday to commemorate our triumph over anti-semitism. I am befuddled about our attempt to blot out the name of Haman. If it were not for us, who would be saying his name at all? The holiday is also a tribute to the actions of one woman, Esther, who was responsible for saving all the Jews of Persia. There are a great many times in our history that the brave actions of one woman have been our salvation. Besides, where would any of our Patriarchs be without their mothers? Please have a safe and meaningful Purim. March 2, is the Men’s Club monthly meeting.

March 17 – 19 is our first synagogue wide Kallah. Members of all ages are invited. It’s at Lake Delton Wisconsin. This is really going to be a great event, I hope to see you there. Please contact Lisa Neiman for details. March 19 is our annual Man of The Year, Youth of The Year Lunch. We will be honoring Lou Rabin, and Avi Limer, two individuals who are well deserving of this honor. There is an opportunity to buy ads in the Ad book, and it’s not too late register for the meal. Please contact me if you haven’t signed up yet. March 26 at 10:00 am is the Men’s Club Yellow Candle packing. Volunteers are needed to help pack and distribute the Yom Hashoah candles.

March 11, is our next Lieberman Shabbat, where we assist with a Shabbat service at a nursing home. This is a wonderful chance to do a mitzvah while hanging out with a great bunch of people. Contact Sandy Ramras if you’d like to participate.

March 26 at 2:00 is the Passover Wine Tasting at the Synagogue. This event is co-sponsored by Sisterhood and Men’s Club. Please join us! I would like to wish you all a safe holiday, and I hope to see you at shul.

March 11 @ 7:00 pm is the Purim Palooza which includes the reading of the Megillah and festival quality entertainment, food and beverages.

Interfaith News from the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council By Joanne Dicker, President It has been an honor to serve as President of the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council for the past two years. I would like to introduce our new officers: Jay Jayapalan, President, from Kingswood United Methodist Church Lynn Moriarty, Vice President, from St. Alphonsus Liguori Parish Dolores Palikij, Secretary, from St. Mary Parish Helene Fox, Treasurer, from Beth Judea and to give thanks to all of the dedicated members of the Interfaith Council who work so hard to provide joint community service projects, promote understanding and community with our neighbors of different faiths and a united voice to support those in need of the basic necessities of life: food, shelter, clothing, and civil rights. Our other council members are: Rochelle Greenwald and Diane Popper from Beth Am; David Schulman from B’nai Shalom, Suzi Nielson from Hope Lutheran Church, Sharon Gorski from Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Suzanne Wexler from Shir Hadash, Lisa Nars from St. Alphonsus, Gary Long from St. Mary Parish, and Rich Rosen and Nancy Cowger Slonim from Temple Chai. During the course of my two year term, our clergy held a press conference speaking out against discrimination. Every congregation was represented. Many of our annual programs, the i-walk, service trip, and Thanksgiving Celebration, have grown with each passing year. Over 1,100 people attended our last Thanksgiving Celebration- finding a location is a difficult but rewarding task. We will be adding new programs. In May, we will have two clergy led panels entitled “Know your Neighbor.” Each will discuss our religious beliefs and practices. Shir Hadash will host a panel on Judaism and Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd will discuss Christianity. Did you know that socks are the most requested item at shelters? We are in the process of organizing a program to “knock your socks off.” Mark your calendars for June 25, 2017 and participate in our annual “i-walk” to feed the hungry. July 30-August 3rd, we will leave for our 4th Annual Interfaith Service trip. This year, we will be going to the Greater St. Louis area to help with flood recovery. The St. Louis area suffered from a massive flash flood in December of 2015. The inhabitants are still recovering, and their federal grant expires in November. Please mark your calendars and join us in this worthy endeavor. All skill levels are welcome. More information will be forthcoming. For more information on any of our programs, please contact us by e-mail or telephone: nwsinterfaith@gmail.com, 224-699-0386 or visit our website at: http://www.northwestsuburbaninterfaith.org or your council representatives: Joanne Dicker: joannedicker@comcast.net (Beth Judea) Helene Fox: helene125125@gmail.com (Beth Judea)
