50th Anniversary Celebration

CBJ 50th ANNIVERSARY EVENTS

On April 29th, 2018 Beth Judea will celebrate its 50th Anniversary. This anniversary year gives us an opportunity to look back into our history from our start at the Kingsbury Methodist Church to the 500 plus family Conservative Jewish community we are today.

Over the past 50 years, with the hard work of our professional staff and lay leaders, we have become a strong Conservative synagogue. To me, Beth Judea is so much more than just a place of worship. It is a Jewish community where we learn, socialize, celebrate, and get through difficult times together. This Anniversary not only gives us an opportunity to celebrate our past, but also to prepare for our future. Starting in July, we will welcome our new Rabbi and possibly a new Hazzan and begin to plan for the years ahead.

This Anniversary will clearly mark the Gateway to our Future! I hope you will join Rabbi Klatzker, Hazzan Weisberg, Rabbi Lifshitz, and me in supporting the future of CBJ.

Yom HaShoah MEN’S CLUB

BETH JUDEA’S MEN’S CLUB

To the Beth Judea Community: Each year our Men’s Club provides our families with yellow candles to light in memory of the victims of the Shoah (the Holocaust). The six million Jews who were murdered in the Shoah lost their lives for no other reason than their ! identity as Jews. It made no difference to the Nazis whether their victims were religious or secular, ritually observant, knowledgeable in Jewish texts and practices or completely estranged from them. In their mania to rid Europe of its Jews they cast a broad net. The memory, lessons, and magnitude of the Holocaust inconceivably continue to fade away and are even denied by some as having occurred. We commemorate this meaningful, historic occasion with the Federation of Jewish Men's Clubs Yellow Candle Program.

This year, you will notice a difference in your candle- the name of a child who perished in the Holocaust. Please remember that boy or girl when you light the Yellow Candle on April 11 and vow, "Never Again." The lighting of a memorial candle for the dead is a long held Jewish tradition. We ask that you light the candles on the evening of April 11 and join us on thar evening for the Community Yom Hashoah service at Temple Chai at 7:00 pm. This is a vital, important, and symbolic way to show our solidarity and resolve that we will never forget! If you would like to make a contribution to offset the cost of providing these candles, I strongly encourage it. One of the functions of a synagogue is to make it possible to remember our shared tragedies. By lighting the yellow candle, we remind ourselves that evil was not limited to the Shoah, and that we commit ourselves to preserving its memory as a caution against future evil.

The Word – March 2018

Sunday, March 4, 2018 10:00 am The candles are packed and distributed by Congregation Beth Judea Men’s Club members every year. Yom Hashoah falls on April 12 this year. The lighting of a memorial candle for the dead is a long held Jewish tradition. We ask that you light the candles on the evening of April 11 and join us that evening for the Community Yom Hashoah service being held at Temple Chai at 7:00 pm. Click here for flyer

Religious Education Strangers in A Strange Land

Anna Besser Education Director

Passover provides us an opportunity to reflect on the stranger in our midst as we recall our own journey. At the Seder we remember what it was like to be a people wandering alone, no one to turn to, and not knowing where we were going. Our story reminds us to never forget what it was like to be strangers in a strange land.

Passover is the ultimate refugee holiday. As we recall our freedom, we are called upon to act on the current refugee crisis around the world. The American Jewish World Service’s newest version of the Haggadah, AJWS Haggadah: Next Year in a Just World, makes a direct connection: "Around the world today, courageous people are making similar journeys — leaving behind violence, poverty and persecution and seeking security, freedom, prosperity and peace." Many Jewish organizations are offering new readings and rituals to include during the Seder. Here are some suggestions from Jewish organizations to link the ancient holiday with the current refugee crisis. Think of it as three more questions to add to the traditional four. SHOES AT THE DOORSTEP HIAS, Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, suggests putting a pair of shoes on the household doorstop to symbolize the fact that Jews have stood in the shoes of the refugee. During the Seder, this provides us an opportunity to discuss our own family journeys. PUT TROPICAL FRUIT ON THE TABLE Both the banana and the pineapple are being suggested as additions to the Passover table. The banana is a connection to the story of Syrian refugee Aylan Kurdi and his brother, who drowned on a beach in Turkey on the cusp of reaching safety. In an interview with their father, the brothers had talked about bringing them a banana as a treat. The pineapple has been a traditional symbol of welcome and hospitality since colonial times because of its exotic pedigree and rich flavor. In bygone days, a pineapple on the table demonstrated that the hosts had gone to special trouble to welcome and honor their guests. WHAT WOULD YOU TAKE WITH YOU? HIAS has put together a Passover supplement that encourages us to think about what necessary or treasured object you would take on a journey to freedom. It also provides examples of actual objects taken by recent refugees, like Farhad, who hid a photograph of his mother under his clothes when smugglers told him to throw everything away as he escaped Afghanistan; and Sajida, who kept the necklace her best friend gave her to remember her childhood in Syria. Ba’al Tefillah Training: Leading Shabbat Shaharit in 6 Weeks Facilitated by Hazzan Weisberg Tuesday evenings, 6:15 – 7:15 pm Dates: Feb. 6 – March 13, 2018 The Shabbat Amidah has some elements which are shared with all other versions of the Amidah, but some parts of its liturgy are unique. We will go through each of the seven Shabbat Amidah blessings as chanted in the Shabbat Shaharit service. Whether or not you reach the level where you can lead the Shaharit service for Shabbat by mid-March, you will be more attuned to one of the core elements of every service, the Amidah.

Men’s Club Ladies and Gentlemen of Beth Judea,

Looking at this secular month of March, I am struck by an uncanny amount of similarities and coincidences of the beginning and the end of this month. There is an expression attributed to the month of March: “in like a lion, out like a lamb.” The book of Esther’s story is preceded by the story of Daniel and the Lion’s Den. When we were in Persia, Daniel was thrown into a lion’s den and conducted a seder in full view of the hungry lions, and six years later, the story of Esther begins. March 1st is the first day of Purim (the Lion), and March 31st is the 1st day of Pesach (the Pascal Lamb). Some other parallels are: Megillah-Haggadah, HamentashenMatzah, Babylonians- Egyptians, exiled from Israel- going to Israel. There are many more teachings about the relationship between Purim and Pesach, but perhaps we can discuss that another time. There are a number of wonderful things happening this month. Please attend as many as you are able. 3-1-2018 The first day of Purim! 8:00 am. Reading of the Megillah! Hag Sameach. 3-1-2018 Men’s Club board meeting at 8:00 pm 3-4-2018 Candle Packing for Yom HaShoah. We are going to hand deliver a memorial candle to every family in the area to commemorate the grievous loss of our brethren in Europe at this tragic time in history. We need a crew of dedicated folks to help prepare the candles for delivery. 3-4-2018 2:00 pm. Sisterhood/ Men’s Club event where we sample wines that cater to a more sophisticated palate. No disrespect to the Mogen David and Manishevitz lovers, but after all these years of suffering, can’t we have something different? I mean we were slaves then, but now we’re not!

The Word - March 2018

3-11-2018 The annual Man of the Year, and Youth of the Year dinner. We are honoring Rob Lipka and Ari Weiss for their selfless contributions. We can show our appreciation and support by attending this event. I hope to see you there. 3-16-2018

Men’s Club at Lieberman

3-24-2018 Men’s Club Shabbat. I am really looking forward to this service. Our own Lou Rabin will be spearheading this great event. Please contact him if you want to participate. Hopefully, there is still time to get in on the ruach. The Sisterhood Shabbat was beautifully executed last month. They really set the bar high on this one. I was once again extremely proud to be a part of a synagogue that holds so many high caliber people. What a splendid service it was on so many levels! Kudos and Yasher Koach to our Sisterhood. 3-30-2018 Pesach, first Seder. I cannot convey in words the feelings I get from this holiday. I am truly in awe of this giant moment in our history. I wish everyone a most meaningful and spiritual experience and next year look forward to spending the holiday with all of us together in Jerusalem L’shana Haba’ah. April 11th: Is Yom HaSoah. Our day to remember all our fallen martyrs who died too early at the hands of monsters. Join us at the Community Yom HaShoah Service that will be held at Temple Chai at 7:00 pm. Watch your weekly email for further details. That’s all I have for now, be well and I’ll see you in Shul,

Sisterhood March has arrived! And what a month this is. We start the month celebrating Purim and end it celebrating Passover. From hamentaschen to matzah in less than a month. Wow! To get you in the mood for Passover, Men’s Club and Sisterhood will be co-hosting the annual Passover Wine Tasting event on Sunday, March 4th at Beth Judea, where you’ll have the opportunity to sample and purchase quite the variety of wines. Later that week, on Thursday, March 8th, the Book Club will be discussing All the Rivers by Dorit Rabinyan, to be held at the home of Brenda Levin. And a week later, on Thursday, March 15th will be our annual Sisterhood Seder, which is held at Beth Judea. Our committee is currently making plans for what will be another fabulous evening! You will definitely want to plan to join us! Last month was our Sisterhood and Torah Fund Shabbat. Fran Eisner did an amazing job planning and promoting the event on the Torah Fund side. Through her efforts. our sisterhood’s donations to Torah Fund have greatly increased. We thank you, Fran, for all you do as our Torah Fund VP. Our sisterhood is very fortunate to have someone who is as caring and creative as you are as a member. Thank you again!

On the Shabbat service side, Phyllis Udany again amazed us with her organizational skills to put the service together in a cohesive manner, as well as her own skills in leading the service. Phyllis, you are a gem! We are very happy to announce that we have picked our Valued Volunteers who will be honored at the Women’s League for Conservative Judaism Central Great Lakes Region dinner on Sunday, April 22nd at North Suburban Synagogue Beth El in Highland Park. These two women give so much of their time, effort, and yes, souls, to our sisterhood through their service to our Judaica Shop, Hanukah Gift Bazaar, and so much more, and we are glad we have a chance to honor both Ann Lerman and Karen Nagel. The entire congregation and community are invited to come and honor them at the Valued Volunteer Dinner at 6:00 on Sunday, April 22nd. More information about the dinner will be forthcoming. Please come and honor these two very worthy ladies. You know you want to!

Be a part of our Torah Fund appeal!

When Liat meets Hilmi on a blustery autumn afternoon in Greenwich Village, she finds herself unwillingly drawn to him... Together they explore the city, sharing laughs and fantasies and pangs of homesickness. But the unfettered joy they awaken in each other cannot overcome the guilt Liat feels for hiding him from her family in Israel and her Jewish friends in New York. As her departure date looms and her love for Hilmi deepens, Liat must decide whether she is willing to risk alienating her family, her community, and her sense of self for the love of one man.

Shiva Baskets

Sunshine Fund

SUPPORT BETH JUDEA BY PURCHASING GIFT CARDS

The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws. Historically, the Board of Directors of Congregation Beth Judea has sent shiva baskets to the immediate family of Board members; parents, spouses, siblings and G-d forbid, children. We would like to extend this gesture to the entire congregation.

Donations may be sent the shul attention Lisa Neiman.

Purchasing gift cards is one of the easiest ways to support Beth Judea. The Congregation earns a rebate from the vendors when you utilize the gift cards, so there is no cost to you. ISRAEL COMMITTEE EVENTS Dear Friends: I am delighted to invite you to join our Congregation Beth Judea delegation at the AIPAC Policy Conference – March 4-6. The AIPAC Policy Conference serves as the finest example of bipartisan support for Israel, bringing together liberals and conservatives, Jews (of all denominations) and non-Jews, young and old, regardless of gender, race or cultural background, all in pursuit of a common goal. By joining our CBJ delegation, you will have an opportunity to choose to lead on a variety of important issues effecting Israel and the U.S.-Israel relationship, i.e. advocate to our legislators that they strictly oversee Iran’s malign activities in the region, protect Israel at the UN, and continue to provide the military assistance critical to Israel’s security. And you’ll be able to enjoy the company of our CBJ friends as we get together to learn from internationally-recognized thought leaders on the Middle East.

AIPAC POLICY CONFERENCE March 4 - 6, 2018

Join fellow members of Beth Judea in our nation’s capitol for three of the most important days affecting Israel’s future. For those who sign up to the conference, there is also an opportunity to register for the AIPAC Shabbaton, and hear from Hartman institute scholars and other thought leaders in a restful and memorable pre-conference Shabbaton experience. For more information, please reach out to me, any of the AIPAC leaders in our community such as Arnie Goldberg or Cathy Feiger, or our local AIPAC staff at lcrosenberg@aipac.org.
