NOTES FROM HAZZAN It’s that time of year again. That time of year when we dig through our things to begin the process of transformation — a transformation we make in our homes once a year as we celebrate the saving of our people. A transformation unlike any other. A transformation that requires time, thought, and preparation. A transformation that leads to a celebration with food, drink, song, stories, family, and community. A transformation which requires… finding the perfect costume. That’s right! Purim is just around the corner. This month we celebrate Purim with our annual Purim Masquerade followed closely by our Purim Carnival! All of this leads to our celebration of Purim itself and the reading of the Megillah. We are celebrating more than just the survival of the Jewish people. We are taking this time to acknowledge our resilience. Throughout history we have gained a strength from one another. On Purim we learn that, through the support of our community, we can challenge what we find wrong and perform feats and actions we never thought we could. In our Megillah, Esther becomes frightened to speak up to King Achashverosh about his decree against the Jewish people. She becomes afraid of the repercussions of entering the king’s presence without invitation. To do these things she asks her cousin Mordechai to gather the Jewish people of Shushan and ask them to fast for 3 days. Esther and the Jewish people fast
together and it is this support of her community which gives Esther the courage to take a leap of faith and go to Achashverosh. To this day we, as a Jewish community, still observe the Fast of Esther the day before Purim.
HAZZAN GIL EZRING
When we put on our costumes this Purim, we are taking a step in the shoes of these great characters who have shown us how to be strong together as a community. It is this strength as a community which gives us the fortitude to endure. We saw this in our own community when we came together for Solidarity Shabbat in support of Tree of Life Congregation in Pittsburgh. I have seen this online in support of those affected by natural disasters. Jewish communities from all over the country came together in support of those who lost Jewish summer camps in Californiathe places which gave so many Jews a home away from home to grow in their Judaism together- to wildfires. . This endurance of our community is exemplified in the song “We Will Rise” by Jewish Songwriter Charlie Kramer (https://youtu.be/2XAZGBNXFS4). This year at CBJ, let us all celebrate each other this Purim. Let us celebrate the joy we can take in each other and the comfort we can feel knowing that this great Beth Judea family will be here in our times of need and in the face of any Haman... Booooo!!!!! Rash! Rash! Rash!

Yom HaShoah MEN’S CLUB
BETH JUDEA’S MEN’S CLUB
To the Beth Judea Community: Each year our Men’s Club provides our families with yellow candles to light in memory of the victims of the Shoah (the Holocaust). The six million Jews who were murdered in the Shoah lost their lives for no other reason than their ! identity as Jews. It made no difference to the Nazis whether their victims were religious or secular, ritually observant, knowledgeable in Jewish texts and practices or completely estranged from them. In their mania to rid Europe of its Jews they cast a broad net. The memory, lessons, and magnitude of the Holocaust inconceivably continue to fade away and are even denied by some as having occurred. We commemorate this meaningful, historic occasion with the Federation of Jewish Men's Clubs Yellow Candle Program. This year, you will again notice the name of a child who perished in the Holocaust. Please remember that boy or girl when you light the Yellow Candle on May 1 and vow, "Never Again.“ The lighting of a memorial candle for the dead is a long held Jewish tradition. We ask that you light the candles on the evening of May 1 and join us on the next evening for the Community Yom HaShoah service at Congregation Beth Judea at 7:00 pm. This is a vital, important, and symbolic way to show our solidarity and resolve that we will never forget! If you would like to make a contribution to offset the cost of providing these candles, I strongly encourage it. One of the functions of a synagogue is to make it possible to remember our shared tragedies. By lighting the yellow candle, we remind ourselves that evil was not limited to the Shoah, and that we commit ourselves to preserving its memory as a caution against future evil.
The Word – March 2019
Sunday, March 24, 2019 10:00 am The candles are packed and distributed by Congregation Beth Judea Men’s Club members every year. Yom HaShoah falls on May 2 this year. The lighting of a memorial candle for the dead is a long held Jewish tradition. We ask that you light the candles on the evening of May 1 and join us the following evening for the Community Yom Hashoah service being held at Beth Judea at 7:00 pm. Click here for flyer

B’nei Mitzvah Bios Ariel Barshefsky will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, March 2, 2019.
Lindsay Jordyn Gluck will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, March 9, 2019.
Ariel is a 7th grader at Woodlawn Middle School in Long Grove. When not in school, you will most likely find Ariel in the dance studio, where she has spent countless hours over the years doing what she loves most.
Lindsay is a 7th grader at Twin Groves Middle School in Buffalo Grove. She enjoys playing travel softball, currently playing for the Mundelein Stampede. Lindsay’s favorite positions are pitcher and first base. She also participated on the Twin Groves girls’ volleyball team this year. Lindsay enjoys spending time with family and friends. Once softball is over in July, Lindsay can be found at Camp Chi in Wisconsin. Lindsay is looking forward to continuing to support others through her visits to Feed My Starving Children.
Ariel’s mitzvah project approach was to learn about multiple social service agencies serving our local community and to volunteer her time at each, understanding both the impact of the organization and her efforts. Among these experiences has been delivering Thanksgiving meals through the Ark, spending time visiting with the elderly at Gidwitz Place in Skokie, and serving meals at JUF’s Uptown Café downtown. Ariel, her parents Laura and Adam, and her brother Asher, are appreciative of the guidance of Rabbi Zimbalist and Hazzan Ezring and are particularly thankful to her tutor, Kim Abern, who has made the overall bat mitzvah preparation experience so meaningful, special, and fun for her entire family.
Joining Lindsay on this special day are her parents Amy and Ross Gluck, her brother Joey, grandparents Paul and Karen Saharack and Sandi and Shelly Gluck. Lindsay will also be joined by aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends from near and far. Lindsay and her family would like to thank her Hebrew School teachers, Rabbi Zimbalist, Hazzan Ezring, and Kim Abern for helping to prepare her for this special day.
A Hearty Mazel Tov to all our March B’nei Mitzvah Families
from your Beth Judea Family.

Shiva Baskets
NEW!! WAYS & MEANS
Sunshine Fund
CBJ Business Directory Advertising Opportunity
The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws. Historically, the Board of Directors of Congregation Beth Judea has sent shiva baskets to the immediate family of Board members; parents, spouses, siblings and G-d forbid, children. We would like to extend this gesture to the entire congregation.

Religious Education THE TIME IS RIGHT https://ajws.org/who-we-are/resources/holiday-resources/purim/ Purim is about turning the expected on its head. It’s about revealing the potential for goodness that sometimes seems hidden. The holiday celebrates a moment in history where a potential for great injustice was reversed because of the courage of Queen Esther.
Anna Besser Education Director
We can find inspiration in the Book of Esther. At a critical moment in the Purim story, when King Achashverosh is poised to carry out Haman’s plan to wipe out the Jews, Mordechai emboldens Queen Esther to approach the King, by offering her these inspiring words: [Esther 4:14]
“…and who knows, perhaps it was for a time like this that you came to be part of the royal household?” Mordechai’s encouragement gives Esther courage, and she seizes this moment—ultimately upending the terrible decree against the Jewish people. Each of us is imbued with the power both to encourage others to act and to act with courage ourselves. And it’s this kind of bold and righteous action that can literally change history. On Purim, may we be moved by Mordechai’s words and ask ourselves how we can heal the world at “such a time as this”—a time when people are suffering from injustice. Follow in Esther’s footsteps, garner your courage, and take action: • Support the work of organizations empowering women and girls – Jewish Women’s Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago, Jewish Women International (JWI), and Hadassah are just a few examples. •
Share with others what you have the courage to do and who you can inspire to join you.

Sisterhood If March is here can spring be far away? We sure hope not! Enough of this cold weather already! But if you need to be warmed up a little bit, how about joining us on Sunday, March 24th for our Pesach Wine Tasting, which we do in conjunction with the Men’s Club. Pam Herstein always puts together a fun event, and it’s a must-not-miss. Plus, when you purchase your wine at this event, you write your check to Beth Judea!! Probably not a tax savings, but it just feels good to be so supportive.
A huge thank you goes to Fran Eisner and her committee for creating High Tea with the Hazzan. What a spread!! The ladies outdid themselves creating delicious goodies, decorations, and more. We’d be hard pressed to think when the social hall looked more beautiful. Thank you also to Hazzan Ezring for educating us about his early life, education, and time at JTS, as well as entertaining us with a variety of musical numbers. What a wonderful afternoon!
Looking ahead to April, Sandy Englander and her committee are planning a Women’s Seder with a Broadway theme. This sounds very unique, as are all of the seder ideas Sandy has brought to us in the past. As of this writing, the actual date is a bit up in the air, but please check the announcements for the final date. And make sure to invite your mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, nieces and/or granddaughters to this event. As many of our programs are, this one is, indeed, multigenerational!
And another thank you to Marilyn Victor and Hannah Whitney, our Sisterhood Judaic Arts Chairs, for putting together a VERY unique program about the art of Jewish Mindfulness. We discussed the Ki Tissa parashah featuring the Golden Calf from a different perspective. What an interesting topic!
Last month was a very busy month for Sisterhood. Michele Sussman arranged for a Golda Meir impersonator to make a presentation. Well, WOW!! What a turnout! We had men AND women in attendance to hear all about Golda’s story. We all learned so many things that evening about Golda, which for many of us, just whetted our appetites to go out and learn more on our own. That’s what happens after such a great program when you learn something new. Thank you, Michele!
The Word – March 2019
Thank you also to Brenda Levin who runs our book club. The ladies who attend have the opportunity to discuss the current book as well as pick the next one. If you would like to be a participant, please join us. All are welcomeeven if you haven’t read the book. Make sure to check future announcements for the next date and book. It’s always an interesting time. We look forward to seeing you at our programs. Please join us. You’ll be happy you did! Rhonda Cohn & Sarah Goldenberg Co-Sisterhood Presidents

Men’s Club The World Wide Wrap was a spectacular celebration and wonderful way to start February that proved to be the premier event of the day easily eclipsing the professional sports game later in the day. There was a strong turnout of over one hundred participants and worshippers with everyone finding a way to share in the ruach and spirituality of the day. Our Rabbi was so impressed that he was moved to write the following to our Men’s Club: “Wow! Thank you all for a wonderful and meaningful World Wide Wrap service. It was truly inspiring to see (the Men’s Club) in action and participate with our students and members. There was a great vibe in the room, and I loved seeing so many people embracing the Mitzvah of tefillin. Yashar Koach and Kol HaKovad.” The Hazzan was equally impressed which was no easy achievement since he’s seen a lot of these events in his lifetime. It turns out that the very first Wrap occurred in 1996 at Temple Israel in Charlotte, NC, which happens to be where Murray Ezring, Hazzan’s father, is the rabbi. Back then it was called the Hundred Man Wrap which Hazzan stated was the actual head count that day. Orin Rotman and Norm Kurtz, who were joined in the leadership role this year by Daniel Landau, are to be thanked for successfully putting together another chapter in our long history of outstanding events. A special shout out is deserved for the able “behind the scene” kitchen crew that labored diligently to provide an outstanding repast of delicious morsels. That group was headed by Jerry Sakol, who was assisted by Alan Marcus, Steve Limer, Jerry Gothelf, and Karen Edidin. As always, Lisa Neiman was seemingly everywhere at the same time lending her able assistance as needed. The starting event this month is the Man of the Year – Youth of the Year dinner event on March 3 at Anshe Emet Synagogue in Chicago. The honorees this year are Brandt Rosen and Adam Rosen, both of whom are highlighted elsewhere in the WORD. All are invited and encouraged to attend to help honor and recognize these two individuals for their contributions to Men’s Club, USY and the entire Beth Judea congregation. (download flyer)
We take a short break then until March 24 when there is a double-header of events. The early event is the annual Yom HaShoah candle packing that takes place at 10am in the synagogue. This is the time when the Men’s Club puts together the bags that will include a yellow candle to be lit in the evening of Yom HaShoah Observance day, which this year falls on May 2. The lighting of a memorial candle for the dead is a long held Jewish tradition. The memory, lessons, and magnitude of the Holocaust inconceivably continue to fade way and are even denied by some as having occurred. We commemorate this meaningful, historic occasion with the Federation of Men’s Club Yellow Candle Program. Volunteers are needed to help put together the Yellow Candle bags and then to deliver these packages to our congregants’ homes. (download flyer) The later event on March 24 will be the 13th annual Passover Wine Tasting from 2 – 4 pm in the synagogue that is being co-sponsored by the Men’s Club and Sisterhood. This is a great opportunity to sample new wines and place your Passover orders for which discount pricing is being provided through the generosity of Royal Wine and Binny’s Beverage Depot. In addition to being able to sample a specially selected array of fine wines, appetizers and desserts will be served. All participants will also receive a free raffle ticket for a bottle of wine to take home that day. All of that for only $5 admission. (download flyer) The following evening at 7:30 pm on March 25, there will be a gathering at the Buffalo Creek Brewery to recognize the accomplishments of our championship softball team and also provide information about the softball program to any interested parties. This is the rescheduling of the event from January 29 that was cancelled due to the weather. In addition to an interesting selection of craft brews developed by this local brewery, there will also be food provided free of charge by the Men’s Club. It should be a wonderful event that all sports lovers should make a point of attending. (download flyer) Ron Friedman, BJMC President

Men’s Club MARCH MEN’S CLUB SPOTLIGHT MEMBER: DAVID GRANOFF This month’s Men’s Club spotlight is shining on David Granoff. David has resided in the Beth Judea area for 16 years, during 14 of which he was a synagogue member. Both of David’s two children also live in the Chicago area. David’s 30year career has been primarily involved with hospitality and retail where he currently holds the position of Manager at the Penny Mustard Furnishings store in Lincolnshire. David served two years on the CBJ Board of Directors and has been, and continues to be, an active and vital member of the Men’s Club. In addition to his current, and long held, position as Co-VP of Communications and Membership, David has also served as our Club President. He was instrumental in the Lox Box program for many years and is always vitally involved in the Steak & Scotch program. David is the key to the success of distributing the Hanukkah and Yom HaShoah candles since he manages the mapping data base that is used to develop the delivery routes needed to accomplish the task. When not involved with family, David’s other passion is community theater. He has appeared in many different roles and multiple presentations, his most recent role being that of Father (Jack) in Brighton Beach Memoirs. If you are a theater goer you may spot him the next time you take in a play.

From The Editors In order for your article to be published in the next issue, we must have it at the synagogue by the 10th of the month! There will be no exceptions. This includes information on disk as well. We need your article as it is important to let the congregation know what your group is doing. Announcements should take the form of articles in The Word rather than separate flyers. The opinions expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Rabbi, Board of Directors or the editors.
