Rabbi Jeff Pivo for Jews outside of Israel. Without the In traditional circles, the revelation of the ability to fit our beliefs to current circumstances, law to our ancestors is understood as having the Judaism of the Torah would have collapsed taking place in two modes, through writing and when the walls of the Temple did nearly two through speech. The writing is what we now call thousand years ago. Torah, in its narrow sense: The five books of Moses. The speech is the oral component of our That flexibility reflects a theology in which tradition, widening our sense of ‘Torah’ by both God and people play an active role in including those laws and traditions which were determining Jewish belief and behavior. It may seem odd that our tradition claims that some laws were ‘left out’ of the written Torah, to be conserved only in oral statements. If they were important enough for God to say to Moses, why not write it down? If the Torah lacks a mitzvah, doesn’t that suggest that what is missing is of a lower status? The rabbis answer decisively: God gave the Torah in two forms, both forms are binding, and each complements the other. While that traditional understanding may strain for acceptance among modern Jews, it nevertheless explains a great deal about Jewish behavior and religious practice. Why is it that we consider non-biblical mitzvot, such as the lighting of Hanukkah candles, to be as binding as the words of the Torah itself? How can we continue to live in a world without a Temple in Jerusalem where animal sacrifices are made to God? How can the laws of kashrut change from

The Word – May 2017

Arguments among Jewish scholars as to whether a particular oral law is binding can be heard as a fight over whether God accepts a new tradition or not. Once an oral law is widely accepted, it takes on the force of the written law; our words take on God’s authority. On Shavuot this year, I invite you all to join us in studying late into the evening following the service for the first night of the festival (May 30). We will also be honoring our Confirmation class during the following Shabbat morning service on June 3; please join us that day to celebrate their continuing commitment to the partnership between God and humanity in our eternal, and eternally evolving, tradition.

Sunshine Fund The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws. Historically, the Board of Directors of Congregation Beth Judea has sent shiva baskets to the immediate family of Board members; parents, spouses, siblings and G-d forbid, children. We would like to extend this gesture to the entire congregation.

Men’s Club Ladies and Gentlemen of Beth Judea,

May 4th is the next Men’s Club meeting.

This month of May begins and ends with Memorial Day. May 1st is Yom Hazikaron, our remembrance of the fallen soldiers who died making our State of Israel a real thing and the soldiers who gave their lives to keep it. May 29th is our American Memorial Day, which means much more than the date we can legally wear white pants and safely plant our vegetable gardens. We should all take a bit of time to remember that the freedoms we enjoy every day were won by people who willingly gave their lives for us. Our heroes of yesteryear gave us today. The very next day is our Israel Independence Day or Yom Ha’atsma’ut. In very real terms, we are all citizens of the State of Israel. A few years ago, I was at the Western Wall in Jerusalem and only then realized that Israel is truly a part of me and I am a part of Israel. There is an odd sensation I get at times like these, exuberance and sorrow simultaneously. Like many things in life it hurts and tickles at the same time.

May 6th is our next opportunity to help the elderly at Lieberman Center. This is a monthly activity that we take part in, assisting the residents with a Shabbat service. This is one of the activities that I find particularly compelling. This past month was cancelled due to an outbreak of the flu. I am hoping that we will be able to help this month. For more details, contact me, or Sandy Ramras at (847) 541-6425

Last month, we had a great crew of volunteers help with the candle packing for Yom HaShoah: Jennifer Brandt

all pitched in and made short work of the preparation of our packages of candles. Thank you one and all for joining in on such a worthwhile event. As with every other month, May gives us a great number of activities to keep us just a bit busier than the last.

The Word - May 2017

May 9th is the next Tap the Torah. This session is titled: Something’s Wrong, a Jewish response to fetal questions. May 12th is the next Shirat Shabbat. This is not a regularly scheduled Men’s Club event, but I hear the president of the Men’s Club will be singing with the Hazzan and a group of other talented folks that night. May 14th is Lag Ba’omer. A holiday usually celebrated with food and a bonfire. This is a holiday I can really get into! May 23rd has a new program called Feed My Starving Children. This is an organization that, with the help of volunteers, packs food in plastic which are then distributed to hungry children around the world. This is an excellent way to perform a mitzvah and get adults and youth to work together for a worthy cause. I plan on participating, and there is room for at least 4 more adults and at least 10 of our youth but we are not limited to just that many. This event is in Libertyville and starts at 8:00 pm. Dan Landau is leading this event and you can contact him at (847)-370-2852. Great thanks to him for allowing us this chance to really make a difference in these peoples’ lives. May 24th is Yom Yerushalayim, when we commemorate the winning back of our most revered part of the city of Jerusalem: the Western Wall. This is a great achievement that took place in my lifetime and holds a special meaning to very many people.

Men’s Club As we say goodbye to the month of May we also bid adieu to the counting of the Omer, which brings us to Shavuot, which I hope will bring deep feelings of spiritual meaning to all. This year's Men's Club Convention promises to be a must attend event- better than Hamilton and easier to get tickets to. A particularly rewarding event will be the combined Women’s League and Men's Club Shabbat service. I cannot possibly convey to you the power and feeling you will feel when you attend a prayer service of this many enthusiastic daviners. There is a wave of strong, sincere, and spiritual ruach that you feel and that will almost bowl you over. Be prepared to have the time of your life. A special thanks to all of our Yom Hashoah candle delivery people: Al Friedlander
