FROM THE RABBI From Passover to Shavu’ot: A Prayer for Personal and Communal Growth Loving God, we have fulfilled the commandments of Passover and emotionally and spiritually journeyed from slavery to freedom. But in many ways, our journey to freedom is just beginning and cannot be viewed as finite or as an event that is fixed in time. Our journey to freedom is a process that must begin with ourselves and then transcend our lives to the greater world. And just as we must be disciplined to improve our lives, we must be committed to making the world a better place, too. There is tremendous suffering in our world;

this process and change the course of history for others, too. History must be shaped and molded by our actions, not by our inactions or intentions.

As we journey from Passover to Shavuot and recall the teachings of the Sages and martyrs throughout time, we must find more strength and increased inspiration to break through all barriers RABBI and embrace the other – no matter MORRIS ZIMBALIST where the other might be. Over the past few months we have prayed for and stood side-by-side with the Jewish community in Pittsburgh and with the Muslim community in New Zealand. HESED COMMITTEE ANNOUNCEMENT We are pleased to announce that the Bikur Cholim and Helping Hands committees are being combined to create a new Hesed Committee for the benefit of our congregants. Our goal is to support congregants at times of need. The committee is comprised of six subcommittees, which are the following:

 Should you give permission to clergy or the office staff, members of our committee will telephone you during an illness and if you wish, visit you at home or in the hospital.  Members will be available to sit in your house to provide security and accept deliveries while your family and friends attend the funeral of a loved one; we will not be able to set up the kitchen.  When possible, we will assist you by driving you to doctor’s appointments, religious services or programs, or on errands.  We will call you at the end of the 30-day shloshim, or mourning period, to check in during your bereavement.  Committee members are available to lead shiva minyans or to attend shiva should you need help forming the minyan. Should you wish any assistance from the committee, please contact one of our co-chairs: Marilyn Green-Rebnord (847-8217740) or Evan Rumack (847-253-4130). We can also be reached through our clergy or synagogue office staff. If you are interested in becoming a member of the committee, we will have a training conducted by Rabbi Zimbalist. President’s Message The constitution states: Any member in good standing may also run independently for a position. You must submit a petition bearing the signatures of not less than ten General Members in good standing, to the President or Secretary, no later than May 14, 2019. At the Annual Meeting, we will also be approving the 2019/2020 synagogue budget and seeking approval of amendments to our CBJ Constitution. The Constitution Review Committee is recommending amendments and revisions to our CBJ Constitution. The entire Constitution as amended can be found here. A redline of proposed changes may be found here. In the redline, proposed additions are underlined and proposed deletions are struck-through. We will have an opportunity for full discussion and questions concerning the proposed changes during the Annual Meeting, but the proposed changes will be addressed in nine motions as follows: ▪ Motion 1 - Articles 18 and 20 ▪ Motion 2 - Section 3.2(a) ▪ Motion 3 - Section 3.2(c) ▪ Motion 4 - Section 3.2(d) ▪ Motion 5 - Sections 4.4 and 9.4 ▪ Motion 6 - Sections 6.6 and 7.5 ▪ Motion 7 - Sections 6.10 and 8.5 ▪ Motion 8 - Section 8.4 ▪ Motion 9 - Everything Else A summary of each motion and the associated proposed changes can be found here. Wednesday, May 1, 2019 7:00 pm Featured Speaker: Magda Brown Magda Brown is a Holocaust survivor and is on a mission to share her story with as many people as she can. Magda (Perlstein) Brown was born June 11, 1927, in Miskolc, Hungary. She grew up in a safe, loving home and enjoyed a normal childhood. At the time, Hungarian Jewry as a whole lived in comparative personal and physical safety. Then, on Magda’s 17th birthday — she and her family were crowded onto a railroad box car with 80 other people. Each transport held thousands of people, including children and the elderly. They traveled for three days without food, water or any idea where they were being sent. The final destination was the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland. After arriving, Magda was separated from her mother, father, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. It was the last time she saw them — they were sent directly into the gas chambers

Each year our Men’s Club provides our families with yellow candles to light in memory of the victims of the Shoah (the Holocaust). During the Holocaust, the Nazis and their collaborators murdered over 1.5 million Jewish children under the age of 16. Unfortunately, lost in this statistic is the tragedy of each and every child that was murdered. This year, Congregation Beth Judea’s Men’s Club again hopes to underscore the horror of the Shoah by providing each Synagogue family with the name of a young victim who may have no surviving relatives to light a candle in their memory. The name, age, and place of death for that child is attached to the candle you received. The lighting of a memorial candle for the dead is a long-held Jewish tradition. During the week of shiva, and on the eve of a yahrzeit, we kindle a light as a symbol of the continuing presence of the dead in our lives. During the Shoah, the symbol the Nazis used to identify Jews for persecution and eventual death was the yellow star, a patch sewn onto a Jew’s outer garments. The candle we light in memory of the victims of the Shoah is yellow for that reason. We use a bit of the symbol of their suffering to sanctify their deaths. Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance) Day falls on 27 Nisan (May 2) this year. Please attend morning minyan on that day to say Kaddish for a child of the Shoah. Please do not forget to light the enclosed yellow candle on the evening of May 1 and attend the Community Yom HaShoah Services being held at Beth Judea at 7:00 pm on May 1 . If you would like to make a contribution to offset the cost of providing these candles, it would be greatly appreciated. One of the functions of a synagogue is to make it possible to remember our shared tragedies. By lighting the yellow candle, we remind ourselves that unspeakable evil was not limited to the Shoah, and that we commit ourselves to preserving its memory as a caution against future evil. Many of you know me through our over 40 year affiliation with Beth Judea, and on May 16th, I look forward to telling you the beginning of that story.” Alina……

Zach is a 7th grader at Aptakisic Junior High, in Buffalo Grove. When not in school, you will most likely find him in the midst of many online battles with his friends from school, where he has spent countless hours over the years doing what he loves most, chatting with his friends and being sarcastic and silly. Zach's mitzvah project was to gather doggie toys, food, and supplies and donate them to local shelters in the Chicagoland local community and to volunteer time at each, understanding both the impact of the organization and his efforts. He has also purchased the Bima Basket contents with his own savings, to create Bima Baskets with school supplies he can donate to local food pantry banks, as well. Zach is an avid baseball player and tackle football player. His nickname is "ZSIII," and his coaches have long joked that they have never met another player with such lack of regard for his own personal safety. He approaches playing both sports with the same intensity and focus as he does his life — with his whole heart. Zach, his parents Carrie and Mike, and his brother Eli, are appreciative of the guidance of Rabbi Zimbalist and Hazzan Ezring and are particularly thankful to his tutor, Kim Abern, who has made the overall Bar Mitzvah preparation experience so meaningful, special, and fun for his entire family.

B’nei Mitzvah Bios Brooke Anne Arndt will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, May 25, 2019. Brooke is a seventh-grade student at Hawthorn Middle School South in Vernon Hills. In her free time, she enjoys hanging out with her friends, dancing, gymnastics, and being on the school's Cheerleading team and Cheering with Ice. Brooke's mitzvah project, she will be collecting school supplies for students in Waukegan. Brooke would like to encourage friends, family, and congregants to contribute to those students who are less fortunate. Donations can be brought to the synagogue and dropped off in the donation box in the school office May 1st through May 23rd. Brooke is grateful for the friends she has made in middle school and Hebrew school. Brooke is thankful on this special day for her parents Dana and Jake and her brother Jacob and for all their love and support. Her proud grandparents Marlene and Jerry Gothelf will be sharing in the celebration as well as her many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who will be coming from near and far to help celebrate. Brooke would like to thank Rabbi Zimbalist, Hazzan Ezring, Anna Besser, and all her Hebrew school teachers for all of their support, guidance, and encouragement. A special thank you to Kim Abern for her tutoring and mentoring, which prepared Brooke for this special day.

Elizabeth Brooke Fine daughter of Melinda and Jeffrey Fine, will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on June 1st, 2019. Sharing in her happiness are her brother, Jonathan, maternal grandmother Jean Berenson, paternal grandfather Cyron Fine, Aunt and Uncle Sharon and RJ Thibodeau from Texas, Aunt and Uncle Nancy and Steven Fine from North Carolina, Aunt and Uncle Robin and Avrom Litton from Chicago, cousins Isabelle, Eli, Lexi, Samantha, and Josh. Elizabeth is a 7th grader at London Middle School, where she is a member of the soccer, basketball, volleyball, and track & field teams. Outside of school she loves soccer, volleyball, shopping, and hanging with her friends. Elizabeth splits her summer between Camp Apachi in Lake Zurich and Camp Chi in Wisconsin. For Elizabeth’s mitzvah project, she ran a 10k charity run called “RunForrestRun”, with proceeds going to the Gary Sinise Foundation. Elizabeth raised over $4,000 dollars, which will go to help wounded veterans, active military, and first responders with making their home lives better. In addition, Elizabeth helped to pack and deliver Passover baskets with Maot Chitim. Elizabeth and her family would like to thank Rabbi Zimbalist, Hazzan Ezring, and her tutor Natalie Gurin for their help in preparing her for this special day. A big thank you goes to Anna Besser and all the wonderful Hebrew school teachers at Beth Judea, who have taught her so much about Jewish culture over the years. Her parents and family are very proud of her on reaching this major milestone in her life.

Youth WHAT’S UP IN THE WORLD OF OUR YOUTH??? Pesach, Elections, Party This past month we celebrated the holiday of Pesach – a time when we reflect back and imagine ourselves as though we participated in the Exodus from Egypt. It is this visioning that takes us to what we do in the synagogue every day. Participation in as many aspects of synagogue life is what allows YOU to be part of the CBJ family. Find your way to be part of the journey. Just as we are told to imagine that we were part of the journey so many years ago, today we do not have to imagine but can actually be part of the journey. Our CBJ community offers so much to be involved in. At this past month’s Spring Kinnus, our very own Maddie Brim, wrapped up her time as CHUSY President. She did so by hosting the largest attended Kinnus in 4 years. Thanks to her leadership and the strong work of the rest of the CHUSY Executive Board, including four more incredible BJUSY members; Samantha Brody, Jordyn Neiman, Elana Redfern, and Lauren Appel, CHUSY and BJUSY are both in strong positions moving forward. Israel has been at the forefront of innovation for many years. Just recently we experienced the excitement of Israeli SpaceIL spacecraft, Beresheet, making it to the moon. While it wasn’t the dream ending we hoped for, Israel did make it to the moon. SpaceIL and Morris Kahn have announced the establishment of Beresheet 2, another attempt at a lunar landing. Morris Kahn’s message to the younger generation: “Even if you do not succeed, you get up again and try. ” While Kahn recruits a new group of donors, a newly appointed engineering team is already at work.

As Israel celebrates is 71st Birthday and continues to be at the forefront of innovation, let’s take a look at 11 Israeli innovations that have changed the world. https://theculturetrip.com/middle-east/israel/articles/11-israeli-innovations-that-changed-the-world/ MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY SniffPhone – the device that can smell disease The SniffPhone is a diagnostic tool that can literally sniff out disease. Currently undergoing field trials, this project is an evolution of the ‘NaNose’ technology developed by Professor Hossam Haick of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. NaNose is a breathalyzer that can detect the symptomatic odor caused by some cancerous tumors, Parkinson’s dementia, multiple sclerosis, and many more diseases to an 86% to 93% degree of accuracy. The SniffPhone aims to further simplify this diagnostic process by making the technology accessible via a plug-in that can be attached to smartphones. ReWalk – a battery-packed ‘exoskeleton’ ReWalk allows paraplegics to stand upright, walk, and even climb stairs. This exoskeleton-esque robot receives movement signals from a wristwatch and is powered by a backpack battery. PillCam – a swallowable medical camera Pillcam is a digestible, disposable camera that transmits data to a receiver outside the body. FDAapproved, the PillCam is now used across the globe to diagnose infection, intestinal disorders, and cancers in the digestive system. It’s also able to access areas of the digestive system that are typically out of range during a conventional procedure. The PillCam has revolutionized modern medicine by allowing patients to avoid visits to the hospital. The Flexible Stent – preventative medical tech Millions of people owe their lives to the flexible stent – a tube-shaped device used to open up arteries to treat coronary heart disease and blockages, preventing the need for open-heart surgery. Known in the medical world as the NIR stent or EluNIR™ it was developed by Medinol.

SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENTS Firewall – the original protection against malware The software that protects our data from dangerous cyber activity is one of the cornerstones of computer security. The biological parents of the firewall are widely accepted to be Gil Shwed, Marius Nacht, and Shlomo Kramer of Israel-based Check Point Software Technologies. The team developed the first ever fully viable commercial firewall in 1993, and since then, Check Point has expanded, opening subsidiaries overseas and partnering with major tech companies, including Nokia.

Religious Education ICQ – the first global instant messenger The so-called “original instant messenger” was none other than ICQ, a free-to-download app developed in 1996 by Israeli internet company Mirabilis. Though there were a few messenger services around in the 1990s, most were specialized, used for peer-to-peer communication in places like universities and businesses. Software developers Sefi Vigiser, Yair Goldfinger, Amnon Amir, and Arik Vardi teamed up with internet mogul Yossi Vardi (Arik’s father) to create a universal communication system. ICQ, a play on the English phrase “I seek you,” allowed Windows users to send each other messages in real time, and the convenient, centralized system quickly reached a widespread audience. Disk on Key – the world’s first USB drive An Israeli patent paved the way for one of the world’s most common everyday items – the portable USB memory drive. The technology itself is a marriage of two innovative prototypes: flash memory was developed by Toshiba in the 1980s, and just a decade before a coalition of industry leaders developed Universal Serial Bus – or USB – a standardized port used to connect devices. It wasn’t until 1999 that Israel-based company M-Systems filed a patent for the “USBbased PC flash disk”, opening the door for the development and production of the portable USB that we all know and love.

AGRICULTURE AND ENVIRONMENT Netafim – a desert-friendly irrigation system For decades, farmers in Israel struggled to grow crops in the country’s arid desert climate. In 1965, engineer Simcha Blass designed a pipe that would drip water on to crops, making it possible to grow them while using a limited amount of water - hence the birth of micro-irrigation. By 1967, Netafim – literally meaning ‘drops of water’ – had improved crop yields by 70% in the Arava desert in Israel, all while reducing water usage in the region by 5%. The technology has spread across the country, and across the globe. Watergen – drinking water produced from thin air It may sound far-fetched, but this start-up is producing clean drinking water out of thin air using nothing more than a portable generator. Watergen’s devices use patented GENius technology to extract humidity from the air – i.e. vaporized water that is present in the atmosphere everywhere from rainforests to desert climates like Israel’s. Watergen’s generators cool and liquidize the air vapor, producing up to four litres of water for every kilowatt-hour of electricity they use. The generators also include built-in filtration technology to account for air pollution and further treat the extracted water to ensure it is safe to consume. The life-saving device is already being used in disaster zones across the globe, including 2017’s Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. BioBee – harmless pest control BioBee is a multinational company that focuses on biological pest control. Perfecting its biotechnology since 1983 under the guidance of bug lover Akiva Falk, it aims to reduce the use of pesticides in agriculture, using the natural power of insects to make crops safer to eat and their habitat a more secure place to be. BioBee runs three projects simultaneously: breeding bumblebees for pollination in greenhouses, using ‘friendly insects’ like mites, wasps, and beetles to attack harmful pests, and reducing the number of harmful insects by genetically modifying their ability to reproduce.

Religious Education NAVIGATION AND ROAD SAFETY Mobileye – life-saving AI “Sensing the Future” is the mantra at Mobileye, an Israeli security company. The car technology was developed in 1999 by Amon Shashua who developed algorithms that would allow a tiny camera placed in cars to alert drivers of potential hazards, such as pedestrians or steering out of the lane. Today, more than 25 global automakers use Mobileye technology to make driving safer, and over 15 million vehicles worldwide are equipped with its technology. The number of lives it has saved is countless. Waze – a navigation device with a twist When Ehud Shabati first tried using a GPS, he was simultaneously delighted and disappointed. He made it from A to B, but his journey was hindered by traffic and roadworks. He looked into other GPS systems and realized they fell short in the same way: they couldn’t provide traffic information in real time. So, Shabati took matters into his own hands. The engineer mapped out his native Israel, first on his own and later with co-founders Uri Levine and Amir Shinar, aiming to make a community-based navigation device that provided road reports on the go. Soon, the engineers had built a community of thousands of drivers on Waze, using crowdsourcing to collect incident reports such as accidents and roadworks.

Sisterhood It may be May, but sisterhood is still aglow with the fabulous Broadway Sisterhood Seder from last month. Sandy Englander and one of the best committees EVER put together an amazing evening. Who didn’t LOVE Sarah Goldenberg’s dramatic entrance as Pharoah while singing a parody of King George’s big number from Hamilton? The Broadway theme kept us all smiling and singing throughout the entire seder. If you missed this one, then you missed a Tony-award level event! Thank you to all involved!

We are very proud of our sisterhood for completing another year volunteering at the PADS shelter. The good work these ladies do does not go unnoticed. This is one of the best social action activities we do as an ongoing function. Hopefully, someday it will not be necessary anymore, but until then, we are on the job! Thank you so much to all the sisterhood women who volunteer at PADS. On Sunday, May 19th will be our Sisterhood elections and social program. Please come and join us at Beth Judea for this event. More information will follow. And a HUGE thank you to Heidi Sakol and her nominating committee for putting together the 2019-2020 slate of officers and directors. Men’s Club Both Jean and I hope that everyone had a very meaningful and fulfilling Pesach observance. Pesach has always been and remains one of my very favorite holidays. In spite of all the preparatory work involved and the traditional overeating that takes place, I look forward each year to having our seder tables filled with dear friends who help make the observance more significant. Perhaps our celebration next year will take place in Jerusalem! Before getting into coming Men’s Club events, I would be remiss if a Yasher Koach wasn’t extended to all who made the Men’s Club Shabbat such a success. A very special shout out on a job well done to Jerry Sakol who was responsible for organizing the service. To all the Torah, Haftorah, and Maftir readers, to Orin Rotman on his usual ruach filled Hallel, to Rob Lipka for his leading of Musaf, to the many others who had readings or prayers, to the Sisterhood for both their contribution to the Kiddush and their able assistance in the kitchen to prepare the delicious Kiddush - a very warm and heartfelt Thank you! Coincidental with the May 1 publication date of this month’s WORD, the Community Yom HaShoah observance is being held at Beth Judea at 7 PM and features Magda Brown, a Holocaust survivor as a guest speaker. And that’s a perfect segue to allow me to thank all the wonderful volunteers who delivered those candles. Now, to coming events in May that admittedly has a very light schedule. • On May 18, CBJ’s Men’s Club will again be assisting residents at the Lieberman Center in Skokie attend Shabbat Services. If you’re interested in participating in this unique and fulfilling mitzvah, please contact Sandy Ramras at si1ramras1@mac.com. • On May 15, Orin Rotman will again present Tap the Torah (download flyer) at Continental Restaurant. This session’s topic is “Does this Make Sense, Some Talmud Mysteries.” Looking ahead in the schedule a little, our Men’s Club has resurrected the ever-popular Poker Tournament that will be held on June 23. Planning for this event has already started, but it’s not too late to lend a hand; so if you’re interested please contact Fred Rabinowitz at rabino49@aol.com. (download flyer). And finally, a reminder that registration is open for the FJMC Convention being held in Toronto from July 3-7. (click here for more information and to register). The Midwest Region of FJMC, of which we are a part, is aiming to have one of the biggest delegations at this year’s convocation so please make sure you don’t forget to register for this great event. Men’s Club MARCH MEN’S CLUB SPOTLIGHT MEMBER: GARY MALKIN This month’s Men’s Club spotlight is focused on Gary Malkin. Gary and his wife Lisa have been married 27 years, have one daughter in her college junior year and the other daughter is a high school junior. The Malkins have lived in Buffalo Grove 27 years and been members of CBJ for 26 years. Gary is an IT professional whose focus has been the insurance industry for 20 years, and he currently manages Project Managers at Allstate Insurance. Gary is a past Men’s Club President and after serving in that role, he served on CBJ’s Board of Directors for three years.

INTERFAITH COUNCIL News from the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council by Joanne Dicker, President I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday filled with blessings of family and friends. Thank you to all who participated in Knock your socks off! Our homeless population is in desperate need of socks and was thankful for all that our congregations collected. Stamp out Hunger is coming soon! On May 11, 2019, the Interfaith Council’s food pantries will be the recipients of the Post Office’s program to collect non-perishable food items. You can help by placing canned goods in your mailbox. Your postal carriers will take your donations back to the post office for collection by the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council. We can always use volunteers to help distribute the food to our pantries located at Beth Am, Kingswood Methodist Church, St. Alphonsus, and St. Mary Parish. (See attached flier) Our other scheduled programs are: 1.

i-walk for hunger: Sunday, June 23, 2019: Our annual family walk to raise awareness of hunger in our community. All funds collected are donated to our food pantries. We walk from St. Mary Parish to Hope Lutheran Church and back. Hope Lutheran hosts refreshment and entertainment for the walkers. We welcome you and other community organizations to join us.

Mission trip to East St. Louis: July 17-21, 2019: We will be joining other volunteers to rehabilitate buildings for use in a program to support former prison inmates transitioning back into society. If you are interested, please contact me, Nancy Slonim (nslonim@aol.com), or your representative for more information.

Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration: Sunday, November 24, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. Our annual family oriented celebration is filled with song and prayer.

We are also looking for volunteers to bring food or work the dinner shift at Kingswood’s PADS on Tuesdays. The Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council serves this community. If you have any programming suggestions, please forward them to your IFC representatives. MT Nesters The MT Nesters are starting our 25th year. But our dues are still the same -- $20/year (no senior discounts). However, membership in the MT Nesters for your first year is free if you are currently a member of Beth Judea. LIFE IN ISRAEL THE GOODMAN’S BLOG Howie and Suzanne Goodman were valued members at Beth Judea until they decided to make aliyah in 2009. We have a group of congregants who have been trained or are professionals who would be able to provide a brief consultation with you in order to refer you on for more in-depth assistance. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records.
