HESED COMMITTEE Congregation Beth Judea is more than just a building. It is a caring community, and we are here to help each other in times of need. The Hesed committee consists of dedicated volunteers who want to support our congregants when they need it most. As such, we offer a variety of services that we hope will be helpful to our CBJ congregants. The committee has five (5) sub-committees, outlined below, that would welcome the opportunity to be of assistance. Please let us know if you need assistance by calling the synagogue office or emailing the Hesed chairs Marilyn Green-Rebnord or Evan Rumack at hesed.cbj@gmail.com. Confidentiality is one of our major concerns, so please do not be embarrassed to ask for our help. Only our chairs and the volunteer will know. 

If you are ill — and give permission to our clergy or office staff — we will try to have a committee member call to see how you are doing and if you need anything. This may include a hospital, rehab facility, home, or skilled nursing care visit during your illness. If you need help getting to a doctor’s appointment, religious services, synagogue programs, or such errands as prescription pickup, our committee is set up to help you. While we may not always be able to make such arrangements, we will do our best. Should you have a loss, we will try to arrange for a committee member to stay at the shiva house during the funeral service so the house will not be unattended, and no family member or friend need miss the service. We will be there to accept deliveries, but not to set up the kitchen. Rabbi will ask you if you would like this help when he is contacted. For security reasons, you will be told in advance who is coming to your home. Should you need, the committee will try to arrange to attend the evening minyan at the shiva home to ensure that a minyan is present to enable mourners to say kaddish. Minyan leaders are also willing to help. At the end of shloshim, we will contact you to check in during your bereavement. It is our intention that this period will be marked during the evening minyan by acknowledging your loved one’s name and by dedicating the reading of a psalm to them and inviting you to the service.

We would like to thank our current committee members: Bruce Darin Joanne Dicker Steve Dicker Cathy Feiger (congregant calls coordinator) Helene Fox Marilyn Green-Rebnord (Hesed co-chair) Ellene Lammers (shloshim coordinator) Brenda Levin

Marcie Marcus Louis Rabin (shiva minyan coordinator) Orin Rotman Evan Rumack (Hesed co-chair) Merle Rumack Heidi Sakol Bonnie Sender (shiva house sitting coordinator) Barb Stark Larry Wollheim (driving/Helping Hands coordinator)

If you have any questions or wish to join us, please contact Marilyn Green-Rebnord (847-821-7740) or Evan Rumack (847-253-4130).

CBJ Business Directory Advertising Opportunity

The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws.

Sisterhood I really, really want to stay positive, but we have been at this six weeks already. As I am writing this, it is too early to know when we will be out and about. I miss seeing all of you in person. Zoom helps, but it is not the same. I recently attended an Institute of Coaching webinar on resiliency. I thought I would share some of the take-aways. Resiliency (definition): the process of adapting skills well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or significant sources of stress Resiliency regarding emotions: R-U-L-E-R

Emotions are an important part of decision making. We all need to make space for our emotions. Recognize the emotion Understand the cause and consequence Label it (anger, frustration, disappointment….) Express it (talk about it) Regulate it – take action to do something about it Resiliency regarding actions: Be proactive, be prepared Expect the unexpected Plan A – probable – go through the What ifs Plan B – worst case – go through the What ifs This is hard. It stinks, but we will get through this! I want to take the opportunity to thank all of those on the front lines of the pandemic. All of you are helping to keep us all safe and sane.

Upcoming Zoom events:

Farewell to Karen Nagel – our beloved gift shop co-chair is moving to California. This is the next best thing to a hug. May 4th @ 8pm Sisterhood Board Meeting – If you have never attended a board meeting, Zoom is making it easy to get to join us. May 12th @ 8pm Sisterhood elections and social event – We will have the elections. We are not exactly sure what the “social” part will be but join us to find out…. May 18th @ 8pm Our installation is scheduled to be June 8th. We will advise you what the plan is for the event as we get closer. I would love to think we could all be together but don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves. Please take care of yourselves and each other. If there is anything we can do to help, please let us know.

Debbie Limer and Sarah Goldenberg Sisterhood Co-Presidents

Contact Information: We can’t begin to thank Karen for the love, support and generosity that she has shown to all of us over the many years with her devotion to the Congregation Beth Judea Sisterhood and Gift Shop. We hope the friendships that we have developed will continue across the miles. We love you and will miss you. Best of luck as you start your new adventure.

Men’s Club Ma Nishtanah! How many different responses have you heard that people have come up with in response to the events of this epochal year? Probably as many as there are who asked the question since everyone’s experience and reaction to how life has changed in the midst of COVID-19 is naturally going to be different. For me, not having a house full of guests the first night as is our custom, and then sharing the second night with over one hundred other participants will be forever etched in my memory as the most memorable part of Pesach 2020. And just think about how these unique nights will be portrayed (and embellished?) to future generations when added to the traditional telling of the Passover lessons. And one wonders whether there will now be an asterisk added to the recital of the ten plaques to account for the horror of COVID-19 and it after effects? While up to the time this is being written, we have thankfully not learned of any CBJ congregants having been affected, I’m sure that the majority of us have by now sadly learned of a relative or someone we know who regrettably has been stricken. For me, the Pesach observance and these days of sheltering in place and practicing safe social distancing on the infrequent ventures out for essentials, have given me cause to be thankful for my health (and that of all my widely dispersed family) and for all those creature comforts that I’ve come to take for granted. Also, during these bleak times I’ve gained greater appreciation for all those who put themselves in harm’s way to ensure that the general populace can avail themselves of critical services and essential provisions. I’ve also been saddened by the vast numbers of people who have suffered financial setbacks during these troubling times and for those who will endure future hardships until the economy returns to some semblance of normalcy. As Jews, it’s times like these that we’re all called upon to do what we can to help those whose needs are greatest. All forms of deeds of loving kindness and tzedakah, no matter how small, will help make someone’s life a little better.

And on behalf of all the members of the Men’s Club, I want to add my voice to the chorus of outpouring of thanks and expressions of appreciation directed to our clergy, professional staff, Board of Directors, and other applicable lay people for the fantastic job they’ve done in using technology to help keep our community together. There were comments made before COVID-19 about how many programs were always being offered at CBJ. That number of programs pales in comparison to what is now being offered in both variety and substance. Thank you again to everyone who’s made, and will make, a contribution to the wonderful offerings for our congregants. . And on the subject of well-deserved praise, I want to heartily thank and extend a yasher koach to those who were responsible for putting together a truly wonderful Men’s Club Shabbat. To Jerry Sakol who organized the entire day’s program; to the Torah readers, Bruce Entman, Evan Rumack, Harris Weiner, Eric Yegelwel, Louis Rabin, Rabbi Zimablist, Hazzan Ezring; to Al Gimpel for his Maftir reading; to gabbaim Orin Rotman and Albert Stark; to Rob Lipka’s Musaf, and to all those who contributed with readings and prayers. Your efforts were greatly appreciated and helped create a very meaningful service. The Men’s Club contribution to May’s list of Zoom offerings will be the next Tap the Torah on May 13. This time it will be led by Al Gimpel, who’s chosen the intriguing topic “Seasons in the SUN.” So line up your favorite beverage and snacks and join us for what is sure to be a very inspiring and thought-provoking evening. And be sure to check the weekly listing of events for the week of May 9-15 for the exact time.

Until the next WORD issue, I hope everyone remains well and stays safe.

Youth WHAT’S UP IN THE WORLD OF OUR YOUTH???

Zoom in to the New Normal Last month I wrote about the three Cs, connections, collaboration, and communication and how they have changed and impacted things in the current social distancing environment we live in. This month I am talking about Zooming into the new normal. While of course this is a play on words because we are literally using the Zoom platform to navigate the new normal, the message of the word “zoom” should go beyond that. While we all hope and dream that we are able to come together in person again very soon, the idea of zooming into the new normal is an important one for right now. We need to run to this new normal with both arms wide open. Embrace the fact that we have opportunities in today’s generation to connect to others in new and exciting ways. At the same time, make sure to always take care of yourself. During this time it is important for us all to focus on taking care of ourselves. Mental health is just as important as physical health when it comes to wellness. Make sure to take some time to take care of your needs. If you need any inspiration, check out the article written by our very own BJUSY President, Amelia Tehrani! Youth WHAT’S UP IN THE WORLD OF OUR YOUTH??? Article from Amelia: Hi, USY! My name is Amelia Tehrani, and I am one of your 2020 Achshav Blog Coordinators. Today, I’m here to talk to you about mental health. If you attended IC SoCal, you may remember me and my story. I was able to give a USY Talk during which I discussed how I was able to get out of the darkest time in my life. If you weren’t there, or you want a refresher, take a few minutes to watch my USY Talk. The reason I chose today, April 23, 2020, to discuss mental health on the blog, is because today marks 731 days of happiness for me – two years! This day is a big deal for me because I learned that I do have a place in life and how I matter to others and how everyone matters to one another.

I want you all to know – you are amazing the way you are. Throughout my journey, I have learned that we are all human. We all have flaws, and we all make mistakes‌ but our flaws are what make us stand out. Like Hannah Montana said, “nobody’s perfect.â€? Now I would like to talk about life. Life is a crazy adventure that has so many ups and downs. It’s a roller coaster, it’s one bumpy ride, but it’s all worth it. Previously, I never wanted my life to have those ups and downs – I always wanted life to just stay at the same level at all times. But now, I know that you cannot live life without those ups and downs. As much as we all want to live perfect and easy lives, the truth is there will be those ups and downs, and as people, we have to learn how to accept them – and grow from them. Right now there is a lot going on in our world, and everything feels a little bit different and out of sorts, but I want everyone to remember to stay positive. Throughout my journey, I learned that staying positive is important, and so is taking time to relax. The world around us may feel scary and weird at the current moment, but I want you all to know that so many people are here to support you. Make sure you take time to catch up with your loved ones – we all need some human connection right now! In these times, it’s important to focus not only on physical wellness, but also mental wellness. If you ever need someone to talk to – I am happy to be someone in your life. My Snapchat is @dancingemmie200 đ&#x;™‚

Thank you for taking the time out of your day to read my thoughts. I also want to thank my family, friends, and USY for always being there for me and for always supporting me no matter what! These past two years have been two of the best years of my life, and I wouldn’t be in the place I am today without your support. I encourage everyone to stay positive, and seek the light at the end of the tunnel, and remember it’s okay to not be okay. ___________________________________ If you or a loved one are struggling with a mental health issue – know that you are not alone.
