NOTES FROM HAZZAN H W Whoa followed by a celebration of singing and dancing. A modern version of this ritual still happens today in many Orthodox communities. The singing and dancing will last from early evening until late in the night (please watch the following video: https://youtu.be/smcxp8u7X8g).
“In the beginning, God began to create heaven and earth…” “Before God created the world, what was there?” This is a question asked in religious schools all over the world by teachers to their students and by students of their teachers. The answer is always the same: There was nothing. There was only God.
HAZZAN GIL EZRING
The Torah gives us a different answer. The first part of this answer comes in the second verse of B’reishit: “The earth being unformed and void, with darkness on the surface of the deep and a wind from God sweeping over the water…” The second part comes from the second day of creation: “God said, ‘Let there be an expanse in the midst of the water, that it may separate water from water.’” What was there before God created the world? There was water, the great source of life and sustenance in our universe. As a Hazzan and singer, water is a necessity to take care of my voice… especially during the past month of the High Holy Days, Sukkot, Sh’mini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah. In Jewish tradition, we discuss the importance of water throughout the year. During our most recent festival of Simchat Torah we read about the separation of the waters in creation. The day before, on Sh’mini Atzeret, we said Birkat Geshem, a blessing asking God to give rain, an essential element in maintaining and growing of life on the Earth. There is a festive tradition during Sukkot called Simchat Beit Hashoeva, the Rejoicing of the Water-drawing House. This ritual originally began every morning of Sukkot. Water would be drawn in the City of David and carried to the Temple. Every evening, people would congregate by the thousands in the outer courtyards of the Temple and watch the ritual as that water was drawn. The ritual was then
During the festival of Pesach, a more recent tradition has been adopted by many communities. The addition of Miriam’s Cup to the Passover Seder reminds us of Miriam’s Well, the well which followed Miriam during the Israelites’ time wandering in the wilderness. Miriam’s Well gave the Israelites life and hope as they travelled together looking for a new homeland. When Miriam died, the well dried up, leaving the Israelites to look to Moses for their source of water. We use water to purify ourselves, returning us to the clean slate we had when were first born. When we are brought into our people’s covenant with God, we go into the mikveh. Before marriage and about to start a new life, we take a dip in the mikveh. Any time we feel we need to purify ourselves we ritually bathe in the mikveh, washing away our bad memories and sins. Water has found its way into our everyday prayer and ritual. It is our great giver of life and sustenance. We even sing and dance about it. May the waters of our everyday lives help cleanse and purify your bodies, hearts, minds, and souls as we begin this new cycle of Torah. I leave you with this great melody by Dan Nichols to the text “Ushavtem Mayim”: https://youtu.be/H-OQyTqK-z4. I hope it leaves you saying H2Whoa!

President’s Message What a whirlwind October was with all the holidays! I hope you found them to be as meaningful and inspirational as I did. I was truly honored to get to address the entire congregation during my Kol Nidre Appeal. Thank you to everyone who has already submitted their pledge card. If you have not remitted your financial or

spiritual pledge cards, this is a gentle reminder. Please consider what is meaningful to you. All gifts, whether financial or volunteer efforts, are valued and appreciated. My Kol Nidre speech is on the website. As I stated in my speech, great things are happening at Congregation Beth Judea!! The great things happening at Congregation Beth Judea during October were the celebrating of all the High Holidays. These great things could not happen without all the work of our clergy, professional staff, and volunteers. To all of you who helped in so many ways, a huge THANK YOU!! After all the holidays, a great thing happened at Congregation Beth Judea the consecration of the kindergarten class.. Rabbi Zimbalist, Cantor Ezring, and Anna Besser led a wonderful Shabbat Service and program for our youngest members, their parents, grandparents, families and friends. I was so impressed with what they learned in such a short period of time. The future of Congregation Beth Judea looks bright. In October, we had our first Trivia Night at the synagogue. With an array of different questions from sports, music, history, and even a tv theme song question to delicious desserts and treats, a fun time was had by all

who attended. Thank you to Brian Gurin and Debbie Bender for coordinating this event. Congratulations to 1st place winners Real Simple, 2nd place winners Infomaniacs, and 3rd place winders Tequila Mockingbird!! It was another great thing that happened at Congregation Beth Judea.
While we can look back at the past month, we need to look ahead to things that are going to occur. One of those events is going to be the congregational trip to Israel. A survey was sent out earlier this year to gauge interest in the trip. Whether you completed the survey or not, there is a meeting on November 5 regarding the trip. Please make sure you attend the meeting to get your questions answered and participate in this experience. Once again, Congregation Beth Judea will be participating in the Annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration on Sunday, November 24 at 7 PM at Temple Chai in Long Grove. This is an inspiring event sponsored by the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council featuring the Interfaith Adult Choir, the Interfaith Children’s Choir, the Interfaith Orchestra Praise Band, and the Bell Choir. Make sure you mark your calendars because you will want to attend. May 5780 be a year of health, happiness, and peace for all of us, our families, our neighbors, and friends. ISRAEL TRIP IN 2020!! LET’S GO TO ISRAEL IN 2020!! Friends Our New Year is off to an amazing start! A few months ago, we sent out an initial questionnaire to gauge congregational interest in a potential Israel trip and our response was overwhelming positive - CBJ members want to go to Israel!
Since then, we've looked carefully at the survey results and the calendar, and we would like to propose the following: • • •
•
Our trip would be 10 days (including travel). Our itinerary would be geared towards adults. Our ideal window for travel would be between October 18, 2020 and November 3, 2020. (All of the holidays and festivals for 2020 conclude on October 11, 2020.) Our Theme (and trip name) Israel 20/20: Seeing the Promise from within the Land
We have reached out to travel agencies and have many fabulous ideas, so what are our next steps??? We need you! Please join us on Tuesday evening, November 5, 2019 at 8:00 p.m. in the CBJ Lieberman Social Hall to continue the conversation. Bring your ideas, questions and enthusiasm! Refreshments will be served. Please let me know if you have any questions and remember: Great things are happening at Congregation Beth Judea!!! Rabbi Zimbalist

“7 + 1” Hanukkah Gift Drive
KRISTALLNACHT REMEMBRANCE DAY
Looking for a Way to Give Back this Hanukkah? Join CBJ in our Annual “7+1” Gift Drive for Jewish Child and Family Service
Kristallnacht November 9, 1938 Kristallnacht is literally translated to 'Night of Crystal' and refers to the 'Night of Broken Glass'. The Night of Broken Glass was a wave of violent anti-Jewish attack that resulted in shattered glass from Jewishowned homes, synagogues, and businesses lining the streets of Germany.
Join CBJ in our Annual “7+1” Gift Drive for Jewish Child and Family Service. Celebrate 7 days of Hanukkah for your children/grandchildren and donate one day of gifts for a child from JCFS. Involve your children or grandchildren in the Mitzvah of giving by including them in the shopping process. We have holiday wish slips for 60 children receiving services from JCFS available for you to shop for or you can donate new games, toys, gifts cards or electronics to a general gift collection. Each child’s story is unique, but each child is part of a family that is experiencing such financial difficulty that holiday gifts are just not a possibility. Whether their need is a result of a recent job loss, divorce, death or other tragedy, JCFS is proud to be able to provide a bright spot for these families. Thank you for making this possible. Please read the instructions carefully.
Close to 100 Jews were killed and some 30,000 Jewish men were arrested and sent to Nazi concentration camps.

You may spend up $50 per child or donate a gift card for them to use. Gift cards can be purchased through the synagogue – so it is one stop shopping. Please email Ronn a Leibach at bows23@gmail.com in order to receive the wish list. I will need to know how many children you want to shop for, if you have a gender or age preference, or if you want to purchase gift cards. We will do most of the wish list requests through email. Gifts must be new and unwrapped. Please print out the tag, tape it to the outside of the bag, close the bag and return it to the synagogue no later than Tuesday, November 26, 2019. You need not purchase everything on a child’s list. JCFS limits each child to a maximum of $50 worth of gifts. Please do not purchase “R” rated movies or music with a parent’s advisory label. If you choose, you may substitute an appropriate gift card. Please return the purchased gifts to the synagogue before Tuesday, November 26th. If you choose to get a gift card, you can do a double mitzvah and order it at the synagogue through the office. You can order a gift card for your child, and the synagogue will take care of making sure it gets put in the collection! Please email Ronna with any questions. Thank you

HESED COMMITTEE Congregation Beth Judea is more than just a building. It is a caring community, and we are here to help each other in times of need. The Hesed committee consists of dedicated volunteers who want to support our congregants when they need it most. As such, we offer a variety of services that we hope will be helpful to our CBJ congregants. The committee has five (5) sub-committees, outlined below, that would welcome the opportunity to be of assistance. Please let us know if you need assistance by calling the synagogue office or emailing the Hesed chairs Marilyn Green-Rebnord or Evan Rumack at hesed.cbj@gmail.com. Confidentiality is one of our major concerns, so please do not be embarrassed to ask for our help. Only our chairs and the volunteer will know.
If you are ill — and give permission to our clergy or office staff — we will try to have a committee member call to see how you are doing and if you need anything. This may include a hospital, rehab facility, home, or skilled nursing care visit during your illness. If you need help getting to a doctor’s appointment, religious services, synagogue programs, or such errands as prescription pickup, our committee is set up to help you. While we may not always be able to make such arrangements, we will do our best. Should you have a loss, we will try to arrange for a committee member to stay at the shiva house during the funeral service so the house will not be unattended, and no family member or friend need miss the service. We will be there to accept deliveries, but not to set up the kitchen. Rabbi will ask you if you would like this help when he is contacted. For security reasons, you will be told in advance who is coming to your home. Should you need, the committee will try to arrange to attend the evening minyan at the shiva home to ensure that a minyan is present to enable mourners to say kaddish. Minyan leaders are also willing to help. At the end of shloshim, we will contact you to check in during your bereavement. It is our intention that this period will be marked during the evening minyan by acknowledging your loved one’s name and by dedicating the reading of a psalm to them and inviting you to the service.
We would like to thank our current committee members: Bruce Darin Joanne Dicker Steve Dicker Cathy Feiger (congregant calls coordinator) Helene Fox Marilyn Green-Rebnord (Hesed co-chair) Ellene Lammers (shloshim coordinator) Brenda Levin
Marcie Marcus Louis Rabin (shiva minyan coordinator) Orin Rotman Evan Rumack (Hesed co-chair) Merle Rumack Heidi Sakol Bonnie Sender (shiva house sitting coordinator) Barb Stark Larry Wollheim (driving/Helping Hands coordinator)
If you have any questions or wish to join us, please contact Marilyn Green-Rebnord (847-821-7740) or Evan Rumack (847-253-4130).

The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws.

For 40 years, Albert has chanted the Haftorah at the Yom Kippur Mincha services. Albert thanks Rabbi Zimbalist and Hazzan Ezring for their help and encouragement. Albert shares this day with his very proud family: wife Linda, children Jeffrey and Jill, Barry and Barbra, and grandchildren Zachary, Allison, Justin, Shaina, and Ben. They love him very much and look forward to celebrating this joyful day all together.

Youth WHAT’S UP IN THE WORLD OF OUR YOUTH??? Be Kind! Over the past month, a clip came out where a camera caught Ellen Degeneres and former President George W. Bush sitting and joking together at a Dallas Cowboys game. The clip itself sparked all kinds of controversy and backlash on Twitter and across the spectrum of people who sit on both the liberal and conservative sides of the spectrum. What Ellen said afterwards is something I have focused strongly on this month. Ellen came out and said "When I say be kind to one another, I don't mean be kind to the people who think the same way you do. I mean be kind to everyone." In today’s polarized world that we live in, I think we too often forget that basic idea. Just be kind to everyone. The quote itself is a simple idea that should be a no brainer, yet it is something we need to remind ourselves of at every level and in every situation. Just be kind to other people around you. It is ok to have a difference of opinion, it is ok to have a different faith, or different gender identity, or different sexual orientation. None of that matters, just be kind This year, I am trying to keep this quote in the back of my mind all the time. I am trying to look at each person and focus on the positive and see all the wonderful things that I can be kind to that person about. Our world has become too divided, and it is because we spend far too much time focusing on our differences. The reality is, we are all different and that is not only ok, that is a great thing. The key is to focus on the ways we can be kind to each other. Two very simple words- be kind- but ones that can change an entire outlook. During the holidays, I challenged all of the teens to take this new approach to looking at things in their interactions. I invite all of you to join us and practice being kind all the time. Religious Education November
Anna Besser Education Director
In education, it is said that we learn through our actions. Is it possible to learn how to play baseball by watching a video or reading a book about it? How coordinated would one be by doing so? How would someone who learned to play a sport this way connect with teammates? What was your first effort at Fortnite or Minecraft like? Didn’t you have to play many times before you succeeded? The same is true of prayer. In class, we teach our students the words and melodies to prayers as well as what the prayers mean. Without practical application of these skills, the exercise misses the heart and soul of Jewish prayer. Not only does prayer connect us to God, but it also connects us to the divine in each other. While it is possible to pray alone, it is much more powerful to do so communally.
To that end, we encourage you to attend Shabbat Services with your children. The Shabbat Service is a delight that can only be experienced when one joins the community in prayer. Help us put the classroom learning into action. Join us on Shabbat morning in the Robbins’ sanctuary and enjoy being part of our communal Shabbat experience. Junior Congregation is another opportunity for our students to put their learning into practice. Students get to take leadership roles based upon their interests and abilities. They form a community that is cohesive and confident in their synagogue skills. Junior Congregation is meeting on November 2nd, February 29th and April 25th; 10:30 am – 12:00 pm in the Beit Midrash. Students will receive Shabbat credit for attending these services. It is said “more than Israel has kept Shabbat, Shabbat has kept Israel.” Shabbat is the highlight of each week. It is an opportunity to refrain from the pace of the weekday world. It is an opportunity to connect to God and to each other. I look forward to seeing you on Shabbat morning.

Sisterhood I hope that everyone had a meaningful holiday season. What great weather we had for our Sukkot parties! It was so nice to see everyone at shul, the high school, and then at our community Sukkot parties. Thank you to the Rabbi, Alison, Zack, and Evelyn for opening your house and sukkah to all of us. We had our second membership outreach and had a nice intimate evening enjoying coffee, dessert, and conversation. It was nice to see some familiar and new faces. Our doors are always open. Speaking of membership, our next big event is our dinner on November 13th. HOLY MOLEY, WE ARE EATING CANNOLI! It is free to all paid up Sisterhood members. If you haven’t RSVP’d yet, now is the time. We want to make sure we have enough food and cannoli for all, so please get your name in by November 6th. The evening will include collections for the Ronald McDonald house as our Tikkun Olam project. Thank you to Leslie Peck and her committee for all the work that they have put into all of our membership events. Ready to think about Hanukkah?? Well we are! The Sisterhood Hanukkah Bazaar will be held on December 8th. Ann and Karen are looking for volunteers before, during, and after. If you can spare an hour or two, Ann and Karen will make it worth your while. Stop by the gift shop to let them you know are interested or email Ann (annlerman325@gmail.com). After you volunteer, we are hoping you and all your friends will do some Hanukkah shopping as well. Ann, Karen, and their volunteers put so much time into the sale (and the gift shop). I love that they find unusual and practical gifts you won’t find anywhere else. They have something for everyone. They even gift wrap for free! Start planning now! Mark your calendar for the Hanukkah party on December 11th. I can’t give away all our surprises this month, so stay tuned, but plan to attend. It will be fun! You might want to be on the lookout for your white elephant gift (just in case). Do you have a college student? We are collecting names for our College Connections. Eileen Spiegel is in heading up this one. Lisa is collecting names, addresses, and email. We have sent gift cards and a note from the Rabbi in the past. Please get the details to Lisa by November 15th. We are going to want to get the gift out early to get ahead of finals and winter break. Let us make sure we don’t forget our kids who are away. That should wrap up all that is coming up. I don’t think I missed anything. If I did, feel free to let me know. We wish all of you and your families a Happy Thanksgiving.

Men’s Club What a truly tremendous October for Beth Judea. Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, and Simcha Torah all in the same month and all beautifully lead by our wonderful clergy team who’ve certainly hit their stride in the second year of their positions on the bima as our synagogue leaders. And it’s always such a treat to have our emeritus clergy back again to show us that they’ve still got the strength and spirit to help make the holidays something special. Hopefully the yomim tovim were personally enjoyable, meaningful, and inspirational for all. We also had several occasions to come together for some Men’s Club events. On Oct. 6, 19 of us combined our efforts for the annual re-assembly of Beth Judea’s sukkah. Those involved, for whom we extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation, were: Gerry Gothelf, Maynard Hirsch, Norm Kurtz, Alan Marcus, Louis Rabin, Fred Rabinowitz, Evan Rumack, Orin Rotman, Jerry Sakol, Ruth, Laura and Dan Sheehan, Sam Sussman, Manny Velazquez, Sandy Victor, Phil Wein, Dan Weinberger, and Eric Yegelwel. On Oct. 16 there was another thought-provoking installment of Orin Rotman’s Tap the Torah followed a few days later on Oct. 20 by the ever popular meal and alcoholic beverages in the Sukkah. This year’s edition was changed to Beef and Bourbon to feature this increasingly popular spirit that has seen a proliferation of a wide variety of different flavors and exclusive offerings from small batch breweries. Allen Harris once again planned and executed a successful event with the able assistance of Brandt Rosen, Rob Lipka, Jerry Sakol, Karen Edidin, and many others. Finally, to close the month, the sukkah was taken down on Oct. 27 with the able assistance of many helpful congregants who, because of Word article submission deadlines, will have to wait until next month’s edition to receive their welldeserved recognition.
Looking ahead, November will be relatively quiet. On Nov. 3, the Men’s Club will be packing candles in preparation of their delivery. Although the packing will have taken place soon after this article is published, there is still plenty of time to help distribute the candles to each congregant’s home before the Chanukah holiday. We’re always in need of extra help with the delivery phase of the activity, so please consider stopping in Room 1 downstairs at CBJ where you’ll find a selection of easy to follow route instruction sheets and a supply of candles. Each route is designed to take no more than an hour measured as “door-to-door” from CBJ. Hopefully, you’ll find time in your busy schedule to spare an hour to perform this mitzvah in support of the entire congregation. Thank you in advance for your assistance. On Nov. 9, the Men’s Club once again has the privilege of helping the residents at the Lieberman Center attend Shabbat Services. I can’t emphasize enough how meaningful of a mitzvah this is, and I strongly encourage you to join us. Please contact Sandy Ramras at si1ramras1@mac.com if you either have further questions or are interested in helping.
The highlight event of the month for the Men’s Club will take place on Monday, Nov. 25, when we will host Mike Berman as a featured guest speaker. Mike, who has been the weekend sports news anchor for Chicago’s NBC Channel 5 affiliate outlet since August 2016, is a local boy who’s “made good.” Mike graduated from Glenbrook North High School, went on to attend college in Missouri, and started his broadcasting career in Springfield, IL. From there he went on to Austin, TX and was in Indianapolis before being recruited by the local NBC station. He will certainly have some very interesting stories to share along with unique perspectives about the broadcast industry. The evening’s schedule will also include a light dinner. Please be sure to mark your calendars for this must-see event. Ron Friedman, BJMC President

BOARD OF JEWISH EDUCATION PRE-SCHOOL
October has flown by! With all the days off because of the Jewish holidays, we’ve been very busy. In each of the classrooms you have seen investigations of apples, children building of their own sukkahs, the lulav and the etrog, and more. We’ve marched with Torahs and sung with Rabbi Zimbalist. Our 3’s and our Pre-K even celebrated Shabbat in the sukkah last week! The 2’s have dived right in to exploring paint, using their hands with red, yellow, and blue fingerpaint. They sure do enjoy making a mess. In addition to the learning about and celebrating the Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and Simchat Torah, the 3’s have also been investigating fall and all the items they see at that time. They’ve created artwork with their fall finds and enjoyed opening the pumpkins to see what was inside. In the Pre-K, the children were fascinated by the sunflowers a former parent donated to our school. Together they pulled them apart, looked at each part of the flower, collected the seeds, and came up with so many questions. We’re going to look into trying to use these seeds to grow our very own sunflowers for outside!

From The Editors In order for your article to be published in the next issue, we must have it at the synagogue by the 10th of the month! There will be no exceptions. This includes information on disk as well. We need your article as it is important to let the congregation know what your group is doing. Announcements should take the form of articles in The Word rather than separate flyers. The opinions expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Rabbi, Board of Directors or the editors.
