KRISTALLNACHT REMEMBRANCE DAY
Kristallnacht November 9, 1938 Kristallnacht is literally translated to 'Night of Crystal' and refers to the 'Night of Broken Glass'. The Night of Broken Glass was a wave of violent anti-Jewish attack that resulted in shattered glass from Jewishowned homes, synagogues, and businesses lining the streets of Germany. Close to 100 Jews were killed and some 30,000 Jewish men were arrested and sent to Nazi concentration camps. Learn More: https://www.history.com/topics/holocaust/kri stallnacht

The Jewllennialz most recently put together what we called a "Kabbalah Cookout" on October 17, where thirteen of us got together in the Beth Judea parking lot, had some delicious barbecue and snacks prepared by our CBJ Caterer Karen, and learned about Kabbalah from our very own Cantor BatSarah. Spirited discussion and tasty desserts were had by all well past sundown! We had a great time at our first in-person Jewllennialz event and hope to organize more just like it in the near future. Thank you again to Cantor Bat-Sarah for her engaging presentation!

HESED COMMITTEE Congregation Beth Judea is more than just a building. It is a caring community, and we are here to help each other in times of need. The Hesed committee consists of dedicated volunteers who want to support our congregants when they need it most. As such, we offer a variety of services that we hope will be helpful to our CBJ congregants. The committee has five (5) sub-committees, outlined below, that would welcome the opportunity to be of assistance. Please let us know if you need assistance by calling the synagogue office or emailing the Hesed chairs Marilyn Green-Rebnord or Evan Rumack at hesed.cbj@gmail.com. Confidentiality is one of our major concerns, so please do not be embarrassed to ask for our help. Only our chairs and the volunteer will know.
If you are ill — and give permission to our clergy or office staff — we will try to have a committee member call to see how you are doing and if you need anything. This may include a hospital, rehab facility, home, or skilled nursing care visit during your illness. If you need help getting to a doctor’s appointment, religious services, synagogue programs, or such errands as prescription pickup, our committee is set up to help you. While we may not always be able to make such arrangements, we will do our best. Should you have a loss, we will try to arrange for a committee member to stay at the shiva house during the funeral service so the house will not be unattended, and no family member or friend need miss the service. We will be there to accept deliveries, but not to set up the kitchen. Rabbi will ask you if you would like this help when he is contacted. For security reasons, you will be told in advance who is coming to your home. Should you need, the committee will try to arrange to attend the evening minyan at the shiva home to ensure that a minyan is present to enable mourners to say kaddish. Minyan leaders are also willing to help. At the end of shloshim, we will contact you to check in during your bereavement. It is our intention that this period will be marked during the evening minyan by acknowledging your loved one’s name and by dedicating the reading of a psalm to them and inviting you to the service.
We would like to thank our current committee members for their commitment to helping others .
If you have any questions or wish to join us, please contact Marilyn Green-Rebnord (847-8217740) or Evan Rumack (847-253-4130).

The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws.

As I write this, the CDC has just recommended COVID-19 vaccinations for children aged 5 to 11 years. When I let that fact sink in, I start to really think about the journey of the last 21 months. Our students, and the Jewish communities that support them, have been incredibly creative, flexible, and resilient. As I discussed last month, we all thrive on routines, our children most of all. It seems to me that our routines may be about to change again. It will be incredibly important to think through our next steps and to move slowly.
The heart of Judaism is our texts, our debates, and our actions. The curriculum here at Beth Judea includes not just the first five books of the Jewish Bible, it teaches the stories and the conflicts of the Prophets and of the Sages in the Talmud. As I watch our teachers teach these stories to exemplify such Jewish values as Gevurah, strength or heroism, I realize how much very these texts have helped us to thrive throughout the ages. I believe deeply that our curriculum is growing children who will be engaged Jewish adults because they have engaged in the same debates as our ancestors and because they have learned the skills of adult Jewish practice, whether it’s reading Torah or giving tzedakah. This school year will continue to require flexibility from our entire school community. We will be focusing on engaging our students and connecting our families. We are so grateful for your support!

Sisterhood Dear Congregants, We hope that this newsletter finds you and your families healthy and happy. Sisterhood has had a busy month, and we hope that you were able to find the time to participate in some of the events that were offered by our chapter, Central Great Lakes Region, and/or the Women’s League of Conservative Judaism. CGLR offered an entertaining program of Broadway Music and WLCJ presented a moving presentation by Judaic artist Gary Rosenthal. On October 13, our very own chapter hosted a Cabaret Potpourri by Jeff and Janis with musical selections from Broadway, Jewish, Yiddish, Israeli, and Italian folk music. Thank you to Lori Finn and her committee for working so hard to offer a lovely evening of entertainment and raffle prizes (and goody bags!) for our Membership Event. We are proud to report that all raffle donation money was donated to Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation in memory of Leslie Peck. It’s hard to believe that Hannukah is right around the corner! The first candle will be lit on November 28th. On Thursday, November 11, the Gift Shop managers will set up a “Channukah Shopping Day” from 2pm to 7pm. Men’s Club Greetings from the Men’s Club. I hope you are all doing well. Fall is definitely in the air as the leaves are now beginning to turn and fall off the trees. I hope you are enjoying the season. It’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving is just a few short weeks away and Hanukkah is literally right behind it. This month, the Men’s Club has a few events scheduled so, hopefully, you will be able to take advantage of some of them. On Sunday October 10, the Men’s Club Executive Board officially welcomed Cantor Bat-Sarah and her husband Lev to CBJ. Special thanks go to Brandt, Jennifer, and Sia Rosen for hosting us at their house as well as preparing all the food. It was a wonderful evening, and we really got to know the Hazzan and Lev a little better. Welcome to the CBJ family and we look forward to the many years you will be with us. Our annual Hebrew Literacy class has begun with Jerry Sakol and Lou Rabin being our teachers. This year, we have three students who are taking the class: Alan Sabol, Eric Scott, and Wesley Morris. The class is held on Tuesday evenings from October 5, 2020 – January 4, 2022, with graduation on Friday evening January 7, 2022. Our annual Tap the Torah series began on October 20 with the topic “Finders Keepers: Reviewing what’s yours.” Yashar Koach to Orin Rotman and CBJ president Herb Finn on a wonderful presentation. There were 12 people who attended, and it was an interesting discussion about the ownership of one’s property and what happens when it is lost and someone finds it. The next Tap the Torah will be Wednesday, January 26. Speaking of Hanukkah, as we have in the past, the Men’s Club once again will be providing Hanukkah candles to the congregation. We packed and distributed the candles, routes, and supplies to our volunteers on October 31. Thanks to Brandt Rosen and David Granoff for organizing and putting the routes together. If you have not received your candles yet, they are probably on the way. If you live in an apartment, condominium, or gated community please contact Lisa, Brandt, or me and we can arrange to get you a box.
We are just one month away from our club retreat at the Ridge Hotel in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. If you haven’t signed up, please do, as this will be a great time. Our chairs, Brandt Rosen, Steve Limer, and Alan Friedlander along with their various committees have much planned for the time we will be together. Something that is in the preliminary stages but that I wanted to let everyone know is we are planning a joint club event with the Congregation Beth Shalom Men’s Club. We are still working on the details, and I will have more to say about this in the coming months. That’s it for now. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out to me or Brandt Rosen. As always, please stay safe and healthy. I wish all of you a very Happy Thanksgiving and a very Happy Hanukkah.
L’Shalom, Rob Lipka BJMC Co-President

INTERFAITH COUNCIL News from the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council By Joanne Dicker and Helene Fox, Congregation Beth Judea Representatives
Working together, we can accomplish much. “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” Psalm 133
Please join us for our annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration. This year, as last year, our Thanksgiving service will be held virtually on YouTube and Facebook on Sunday, November 21, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. Our theme this year is “Living Together with Gratitude.” The Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration is a special way to express unity and hope for the future with our neighbors in prayer, song, and celebration. Our speakers this year will be Rabbi Ilana Baden from Temple Chai, Father Dan Whiteside from St. Mary Parish, and Pastor Jim Andrews from Hope Lutheran Church. Rabbi Zimbalist provided the clergy reading from which he and Cantor Bat-Sarah will read along with other clergy members. As we did last year, various members of the congregations will share what they think living together with gratitude means to them. We will have a bell choir and music from past children’s choirs and current adult choirs. To join us, go to our website at www.northwestsuburbaninterfaith.org or check your congregation’s e-mails or website for the link a couple days before the Celebration. Please see the attached flier for more information. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, please join the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council on the day after Thanksgiving as we pack food at Feed My Starving Children in LIbertyville on November 26, 2021. This is a wonderful family and friend project to help teach gratitude and thanksgiving. You may sign up as a family unit or group. Join other church and synagogue members in the fight against hunger. Please see the attached flier for more information. Please remember those who are less fortunate. The Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council still helps support our local food pantries. Monetary donations are always welcome. If you prefer, please donate non-perishable food to our member food pantries located at Congregations Beth Am, St. Mary Parish and Kingswood Methodist Church - all located in Buffalo Grove - and St. Alphonsus in Prospect Heights. . Pantry Assistance Flyer The Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council proudly serves this community. If you have any programming suggestions, please forward them to us or your IFC representatives. Hesed Committee
An Important Announcement CONGREGATION BETH JUDEA HESED (CARING) COMMITTEE The Hesed committee would like to know if you have any difficulties/problems that you would like to discuss with a knowledgeable individual. We have a group of congregants who have been trained or are professionals who would be able to provide a brief consultation with you in order to refer you on for more in-depth assistance. We are also thinking about starting some support groups. We would like to know what you feel your needs are. Please email Ellene Lammers at elammers@comcast.net or call the Rabbi. FOR A LIST OF EMERGENCY HOTLINE NUMBERS, AGENCIES AND RESOURCES click here
We Would Like To Know WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records.
Please call the synagogue office with this information. Do not assume that someone else will have notified the synagogue staff. 46
