Rabbi's Reflections Happy Renewed Year The Days of Awe lift our spirits, reminding us through familiar words of prayer, melody, and customs of what connects to one another. The fall holidays – from Rosh Hashanah through Yom Kippur to Sukkot and Simhat Torah – overwhelm the senses with seasonal tastes, sounds and sights: Apples and honey, shofar, fasting, the sukkah, the four species and, finally, the rescrolling of the Torah to begin again at Bereshit. The New Year begins with the renewal of these rites, as we not only repeat them but also invest them with new meaning. As the year is renewed, so are we. Looking ahead to 5776, there are endless possibilities for personal growth and for communal transformation. The holidays, Shabbat, indeed every element of our ritual lives are opportunities to re-engage in an existing tradition and to infuse that tradition with our own experiences, points of view, and values. Judaism is not static but an evolving culture, one which adapts to the needs of the time while holding fast to eternal values. This year we have a fantastic opportunity to renew who we are on a movement-wide basis. The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (USCJ) is hosting its national convention right here in Schaumberg November 13-17. The convention will draw Conservative Jews from all over the country, feature dozens of inspiring speakers, and host forums for intensive learning and discussion about the direction of our movement. Among the presenters will be Arnold Eisen, Chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS), as well as nationally known

The Word – October 2015

figures, rabbis like David Wolpe, Brad Artson, Ed Feinstein, cantors such as George Mordecai, JTS professors, and lay leaders from across the country, including (drum roll, please!) our own Norm Kurtz. I will be attending the convention, as will Hazzan Weisberg, our president Arnie Goldberg, and members of our Board of Directors. We will be learning how synagogues around the country are reinventing themselves to better serve their communities in the 21st century and sharing our own visions for where we should be going. A sampling of the sessions includes presentations on inclusion of those who cope with disabilities in our communal life, meaningfully engaging different types of Jewish families, and innovative approaches to financing synagogue life. You can find a full listing of presenters and the convention schedule online at ShapetheCenter.org. For all of us who have yearned for a chance to shape the direction of our movement and learn what the possibilities are for renewal right here at home, this is a golden opportunity. We want a strong presence at convention from Beth Judea, a congregational contingent that will make our voice heard and that will bring new ideas back to our membership. Check out the website, register for convention online, or contact me directly with any questions. I look forward to seeing you at convention as we renew our year, our congregation and ourselves. Notes From The Cantor JOIN US ON A DELUXE TRIP TO SPAIN In early July, 2016, Rabbi Lifshitz and I hope to bring a group from Beth Judea to Spain as part of a mission being organized by the Cantors Assembly and the Conservative Movement. This unique trip will highlight the Sephardic experience, the Golden Age of Spanish Jewry which existed for a thousand years until the Inquisition in 1492. Rabbi Lifshitz and I have each visited Spain in recent years and are looking forward to sharing our own experiences and background with you, together with expert tour guides. We will have a chance to interact with the Jewish communities that are still there today to learn of their struggles as well as their successes. While some parts of Europe are experiencing an upsurge in anti-Semitism, the Spanish government has recently issued a strong statement condemning boycotts of Israel and opening the door to citizenship for Jews with Spanish roots. We need to show them our support and appreciation! If the trip is too expensive, we could make some modifications to better suit the needs of our members. Please do let one of us know if you have any interest and would like to discuss further! I can be reached at hazzanweisberg@bethjudea.org or through the synagogue office.

President’s Message We Couldn’t Do It Without YOU! Over the past several weeks the response to most of my requests has been “wait until after the holidays.” Well, the High Holidays are over, and it’s time to return to business as usual.

I would also like to thank each and every congregant who attended our services. Your participation helps gives special meaning to our Communal Prayer. I have included the text of my Kol Nidre appeal in this month’s Word. It was a special honor to address the congregation. If you have not remitted your financial or spiritual pledge card, I would appreciate your consideration to returning your pledge card and making a contribution meaningful to you. I hope that 5776 is a year of health, happiness, and prosperity for all our Beth Judea family. Arnie Goldberg President Congregation Beth Judea

President’s Message – Kol Nidre Appeal Good Evening, I would like to thank each of you for allowing me several moments on Erev Yom Kippur when everyone is deeply engaged in prayer to be inscribed in the Book of Life. It’s serious stuff; we ask G-d to show mercy and forgive us for our sins, to have compassion for us, and absolve us of our transgressions. Please indulge me for one moment as I share a short personal prayer. I rarely do this, but given the significance of my appeal and being that this is my first time, here is my prayer: G-d give strength to my voice so that it connects to each congregant, and please help me to remember and to properly pronounce all my words. When I was a young child, we regularly visited my grandparents for Shabbat dinner. I loved my grandmother. She exemplified all that was good, and she unconditionally loved all her grandchildren. My grandmother owned a set of wine glasses her family brought from Russia. These glasses were always displayed in the breakfront and only brought out on holidays to enrich and beautify our family celebrations. These glasses served as a clear reminder of my grandmother, of our Jewish heritage and customs that are so important in my daily life. The glasses are of little tangible value, but to me they clearly are of great sentimental value, as they recall memories of someone whom I dearly loved. I am certain each of you has a similar item; though of little tangible value, it is one of your most beloved possessions. I believe that being part of the Jewish community, supporting the State of Israel, and being a member of Congregation Beth Judea has the same intrinsic value as my grandmother’s glasses. Being a member of the Jewish community creates a sense of belonging, of shared common tradition and history. Knowing that wherever you are there will be a Jewish community with the same heritage, and regardless of their individual customs, they will always be warm and welcoming. When my family relocated from Philadelphia to Buffalo Grove, it was comforting to discover a welcoming Jewish community here at Beth Judea. Support for the State of Israel should be considered another valued ideal. After centuries of wandering and being exiled from so many places, the Jewish people now have a homeland that is ours and represents a place where any Jew can live and freely practice their Judaism. There has always been a communal gathering place for Jewish people. From the construction of the tabernacle through the destruction of both Temples, the synagogue has become the core of Jewish life. The Word - October 2015

9

President’s Message – Kol Nidre Appeal Our facility is not only a building, but rather a place where we are all valued congregants. We pray, socialize, learn, celebrate, and mourn - not as individuals, but as a Kehilla. As a Jew, committed to the Jewish community, to the State of Israel, and our Congregation Beth Judea, I am concerned about the challenges we all face and what legacy we will pass on to future generations. My first concern is the number of non-affiliated Jews .The percentage of affiliated Jews is estimated to be less than 13%. Unlike previous generations, fewer families place the same value on membership in a shul. They are seeking opportunities to develop their Jewish identity outside the traditional synagogue. My second concern is the growth of anti-semitism throughout Europe, the US, and other counties. Attacks on Jews seems to now be an accepted practice in numerous places. Several groups are not willing to find a way to live together in peace, but rather have the common goal of destroying the State of Israel and all Jews. Beth Judea, “the Conservative Synagogue” in the North West suburbs, was founded in 1968 by a small group of families who saw the need for a Conservative place of worship in the newly developing suburbs of Buffalo Grove ,Arlington Heights, and Long Grove. As we approach our fiftieth anniversary, we continually face the challenge of sustainability. If we were to look forward fifty years, what would the “The Conservative Synagogue” in The Northwest suburbs look like? Would we still exist? What legacy will we be passing on to future generations? I recognize that many of you are aware that these issues are important but wonder "what can I, an individual contribute?" Why is it significant at this point in time? The answer is supplied as we remember the words of Hillel “if not now when!” My appeal tonight is four fold: the donation of monies to Jewish organizations and our Kol Nidre appeal, the establishment of a Congregation Beth Judea endowment, and the contribution of your time. Strengthening the Jewish community by supporting those Jewish organizations that assist Jews throughout the world is important. We at CBJ support the overall Jewish community, through our Social Action committee, by hosting events for Jewish organizations. Also, on numerous occasions we have invited the entire Jewish community to events that we believe will help establish a Jewish connection.

President’s Message – Kol Nidre Appeal The State of Israel is in constant need of not only financial support, but also your advocacy. There are a wide variety of opportunities to donate to and to be informed about the State of Israel. Beth Judea’s Israel committee has been extremely active in supporting groups that let Israel's voice be heard. They have engaged speakers and educational movies to keep us informed. They were the catalyst behind the congregation’s most recent Israel trip in 2014 and are planning a family trip in December of 2016. My next appeal is for the Congregation; like my grandmothers glasses, being a member has many intangible values. First the synagogue is a constant reminder of past events. My children, like many of yours, attended Hebrew school and became B’nai Mitzvah here. We celebrated other simchas like marriages and baby namings. Tomorrow as a community, we will remember our loved ones and friends we lost. Your Kol Nidre gift helps sustain our Congregation on an annual basis. Recognizing that only 75% of our operating budget is derived from our dues and fees, we are in need of your financial support to supplement our operating budget. For those congregants who have given generously in prior years, we appreciate your contribution and hope you can increase your pledge this year. For those congregants who have chosen not to participate previously, we would appreciate if you would consider a gift that is meaningful to you. As little as $.50 per day would make a big difference in enabling Beth Judea to meet its financial challenges. Over the last year, our congregation has been engaged in a very special fund raising campaign, Me’ah. Our goal is to raise 3 million dollars, which will be used mostly to fund a permanent endowment. Led by our campaign committee and its co-chairs Mitch Lerman and Natalie Solomon, we have reached out on an individual basis to over 120 families and have raised roughly $1.2 million in cash and $500 thousand in planned gifts. This Me’ah endowment fund will help to create the legacy of our Conservative Congregation hopefully for the next fifty years. However, we cannot achieve our goal without the contributions of the entire Congregation. On behalf of the entire congregation,I would like to thank those who have already made a pledge to the Me’ah campaign, and to those who have not as of yet been approached, I request that you assist in creating our legacy by pledging tzedakah to Me’ah or the Sefar Haftarah project. Lastly, my appeal is for your time. Finding volunteers has been a difficult task, and we need help with projects to keep operating in the most efficient manner. I recognize that many of you have time constraints. You often you work long hours and are involved in many different activities. There are group of congregants who devote significant hours to support and maintain CBJ.

The Word - October 2015

11

President’s Message – Kol Nidre Appeal My appeal is that a larger group dedicate a few hours each month. If 50% of our congregants offered just 1 hour a month, that would equate to almost 300 volunteer hours a month. That small amount of time from each congregant would greatly assist CBJ achieve sustainability. We have included a new spiritual pledge card in your envelopes. The tabs equate to both hours you could contribute and your area of interest. I would appreciate if all of you would consider a gift of your time as well as your financial support. I would like to thank all of our staff and clergy for their hard work. Rabbi Pivo, Cantor Weisberg, and Rabbi Lifshitz- your efforts make Beth Judea an inspiring religious home. Ben Saypol your voice continues to enrich our High Holiday services. To Lisa, Anna, Mark and their entire staff, thank you for all you do to make Beth Judea a very special place. To each of you on an individual basis, may the coming year, 5776, have special meaning to you and your loved ones May you be inscribed in the Book of Life for many years to come. G’mar Chatimah Tova Arnie Goldberg CBJ President

B’nai Mitzvah Bio Blake Adam Finkel will be called to the Torah on October 24, 2015. A 7th grader at Twin Groves Junior High School, Blake enjoys competing on the track and field team and playing the viola with the school orchestra. When not at school, you can usually find him on a soccer field playing with the Chicago Fire Juniors North travel team. Blake is a huge history buff and could tell you anything you want to know about World War II. He also enjoys watching movies and hanging out with his friends. Blake’s favorite time of the year is summer because he has grown up at JCC Camp Chi. His favorite activities at camp are waterskiing, horseback riding, and outdoor cooking. Since camp has played such an important role in his life, Blake and his friends will be doing several projects over his Bar Mitzvah weekend to help beautify the camp. Blake is also volunteering with Keshet and helping with their Buddy Bowling program as part of his Mitzvah Project.

Family and friends are very important to Blake. He is excited to share his special day with his parents Brad and Rachael, sister Shayna, grandparents Ruth Finkel and Roberta & Joe Star, great grandmother Sarah Deicher, as well as aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends. Blake would like to thank Rabbi Pivo, Cantor Weisberg, Anna Besser, and all of his Hebrew school teachers who have helped him through the years with his Jewish education. He would also like to thank his tutors Andrea Dickson and Chuck Kahalnik for all their hard work helping Blake prepare for this special day.

The Word - October 2015

Jonathan Samuel Fine will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, October 31st, 2015. Jonathan is a 7th grader at Jack London Middle School in Wheeling, where he was accepted as part of the "Sensations" choral group. He also enjoys baseball, tennis, acting (last spring he was one of the stars of his school play), and riding his bike.

For his Mitzvah project, Jonathan wanted to utilize his love of riding his bike and to make a big difference. This summer he challenged himself and rode his bike 86 miles over 2 days—raising $5,000 for Multiple Sclerosis. Jonathan is sharing this amazing day surrounded by what is most important to him: family and friends. His overjoyed parents, Melinda and Jeff, his adoring sister, Elizabeth, his grandmother, Jean Berenson, his grandfather, Cyron Fine, along with aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends who couldn't be more proud of him and the man he has become. Jonathan knows those who have passed on are looking down on him with a smile, including his grandfather Jerry Berenson, his grandma Sue Fine and his great grandmothers Sarah Berenson Singer, Edith Alderman, and Edith Chavin Goodman.

Jonathan would like to give special thanks to Rabbi Pivo, Hazzan Weisberg, Kim Abern, Sam Sussman, Anna Besser, and all his Hebrew school teachers who helped him prepare for this remarkable day.

Religious Education THE HEART OF THE MATTER Jewish holidays have labels that describe the essence of the holidays. Pesach is known as “the time of our freedom;” Shavuot is known as “the time of giving the Torah;” Sukkot and Simchat Torah are known as “the time of our simcha (happiness).” What makes Simchat Torah the time of our happiness? Let’s take a look at what we’re celebrating: the Torah. It’s our favorite book— one we read and reread. It never gets shelved. The moment we finish it, we scroll to the beginning and start anew. Each time I read my favorite book, I read with a new perspective. Prior knowledge, age, and experiences change how I read the book. It’s the same words, but a new layer of understanding emerges. And that takes us to the heart of the matter- the last and first words of the Torah – Yisrael and Bereshit. Take the last letter of the last word - lamed - and the first letter of the first word bet; together they form the word lev, which means heart. For many, this shows that the Torah is the heart of the Jewish people. Children learn with their minds (mo’ach) AND hearts (lev). The Torah is the perfect thing to engage the whole child – something which will help the child grow in mind and heart, body and soul. Can children of any age really study Torah? ABSOLUTELY YES! Each year brings a year’s worth of personal experiences to a child’s encounter with the Torah. The more a child delves into the Torah, the more they feel a sense of ownership of the Torah. Our goal is to allow the Torah to capture the minds and hearts of our children. The celebration of Simchat Torah is the perfect jumping point to teaching our children about the Jewish people’s FAVORITE BOOK. And when your children ask, “Did that really happen?” (and they will ask!) it is always safe to say, “Well, I wasn’t there, but that’s what the Torah says. What do you think?” Pave the way to Torah for children, and they will go eagerly. And with that, we look forward to seeing all of you at our Simchat Torah celebrations on Oct. 5th! Kindergarten Consecration Please join us for our annual Congregation Beth Judea Kindergarten Consecration on Erev Simchat Torah, Monday, October 5th at 7 pm when we welcome our kindergarten students to a lifetime of Jewish Learning! SISTERHOOD Summer is coming to a close, our young kids are headed back to school, and our older ones are headed off to college, perhaps for the very first time. This is also when Sisterhood's wonderful College Care Card project gets underway. Each year at this time, the CBJ office puts a notice in The Word requesting the name and address of all our undergraduate college students. In the past, 30-35 parents responded with the necessary information. Sisterhood, headed by College Care Card chairperson Linda Lippman, compiles the list of names, and right after the Thanksgiving Break, the mailing goes to each listed student, containing a gift card, and warm wishes from Sisterhood, as well as a humorous and personal letter from Rabbi Pivo. The CBJ undergrad students look forward each year to this special mailing and the connection from home that Sisterhood brings them. If your student (undergraduates only, please) would like to receive this anticipated and always appreciated mailing, please email his/her name and complete college address to Lisa Neiman (lneiman@bethjudea.org). Sisterhood thanks you in advance for your support of our very worthwhile project focusing on our Beth Judea college students.

Men’s Club The mission of the Men’s Club is to involve Jewish men in Jewish lives. Our club serves Congregation Beth Judea by meeting the diverse educational, religious, and social needs of Jewish families in the modern Jewish world. Congregation Beth Judea’s Men’s Club is a vital arm of our synagogue community. Two thousand years ago Hillel said, “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? Yet if I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?” Congregation Beth Judea’s Men’s Club needs your participation to help strengthen our Jewish community by involving Jewish men in Jewish life. Please join us by sending your completed membership application and check for the amount of dues to Men’s Club at Congregation Beth Judea or by joining on line. The annual building of the Sukkah under the direction of crew chief Sandy Victor took place Sunday, September 20. Final completion and decoration took place after Yom Kippur. Thank you to all who worked to construct and complete the Congregation Beth Judea Sukkah. Men’s Club's most popular event, Steak and Scotch in the Sukkah, is scheduled for Sunday evening October 4. The steaks are delicious, the scotch is smooth, and the programming is excellent. There may still be some space available at this late date. Please contact either Allen Harris or David Granoff if you have not yet made reservations and wish to attend. One of the most important things Men’s Club participates in is volunteering at the Lieberman Center in Skokie every fourth Shabbat morning. We assist the residents to and from services and as needed during the Shabbat service. We continue to receive extremely positive feedback from the folks at the Lieberman Center. Beth Judea’s Men’s Club is scheduled to assist the residents twice during the month of October. We will be volunteering on Saturday, October 3 and again on Saturday, October 31. We ask that you arrive there by 9:30 AM. Please contact either Ron Friedman or Jerry Sakol if you wish to participate in this worthy endeavor or if you have any questions. By definition, a sukkah is a temporary dwelling. Men’s Club members will be taking down the Sukkah on Sunday, October 11 at 10 AM. We need your help! Next month will also be a busy month for Men’s Club. We will be packing Hanukkah candles and distributing the candles to most of the homes of the members of Congregation Beth Judea on November 8. The contributions we receive from these candles help us support youth activities, including purchasing of siddurim for the Aleph class and providing support to synagogue youth groups. Please help us pack and distribute these candles. Remember to send your donations to Men’s Club so that we can continue to support these youth activities and spark light in Jewish life for our young people. The FJMC’s Sefer Haftorah has travelled around the country. It has been used in synagogues from the West Coast to the East Coast, from Florida to California. It will be at Congregation Beth Judea for Shabbat services on November 21. Men’s Club members will lead a lay lead service. The Haftorah will be chanted from the FJMC Sefer Haftorah, which should be memorable. It will allow us a taste of what it will be like when Beth Judea receives its very own Sefer Haftorah. In the evening of November 21 Men’s Club along with Sisterhood plan a Vodka and Latke event. More details will be available soon.

YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE We firmly believe that reaching out to others benefits not only the recipient, but the person providing help as well. This is, without a doubt, a win-win situation for all involved. If you are interested in making a difference, please contact one of the Hesed (Caring) committee members below: Rabbi Pivo Ellene Lammers Wendy Wunsch Evan Rumack

We Would Like To Know WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance.

Upon three things the world is based: Upon Torah, Upon Divine Service and

Upon the Practice of Charity

If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records. Please call the synagogue office with this information. Do not assume that someone else will have notified the synagogue staff.

SHALVA “Its okay, the children aren’t effected” But what if you knew they were?

Did you Know……… SHALVA Collects Cellphones?

Shalva clients will often say that they can withstand their husband’s abuse as long as he never directs his anger toward their children. What many women don’t understand is that children are the silent victims of abuse and that they often repeat the behaviors they have seen.

For quite a few years now, Congregation Beth Judea has been generously collecting cell phones for SHALVA.

According to a recent study, over 90% of children are aware of domestic abuse in their home. These children are affected emotionally, cognitively, and physically. They are at great risk and often experience low selfesteem, shame, fear and guilt. Many distrust adults, fail to thrive or suffer from depression and anxiety. What can we do? The issue of domestic abuse is not just a women’s issue; it affects the entire family as well as our Jewish community. SHALVA offers free counseling to Jewish women who are or were in an intimate partner relationship. If you or someone you know needs our help, call 773-583-4673.

We thought you’d enjoy knowing a bit about how this process works. After we gather the phones you put into the collection box, we ship them to a recycling operation in Florida, Shelter Alliance . They pay us according to the “blue book”value of each phone. In processing the thousands of phones we send them every year, they wipe clean all your personal data and either refurbish your phones, recycle the parts or melt them down. Each year SHALVA receives around $40005,000 just by collecting your old or broken cellphones. All of these dollars go directly to help our clients. Recently Shelter Alliance has expanded their recycling program and now accepts Ipods, Ipads, and Readers. So, the next time you pass by the synagogue office and see the SHALVA collection box, think about all those old cellphones, ipads and ipods taking up space in your drawer or closet, and help us turn them into dollars for clients.

Upon three things the world is based: Upon Torah, Upon Divine Service, and Upon the Practice of Charity.

Cell Phone Drop-Off Box In Synagogue Office! Help domestic abuse victims by donating your old cell phones. Each phone raises money for domestic abuse crisis-counseling services in the Jewish community! There is a collection box in the synagogue office. The Word - October 2015
