FROM THE RABBI ADAPTING TRADITION TO OUR EVER-CHANGING TIMES process of sacrificial worship which was something very different from preredemption Judaism in Egypt and the Judaism that was practiced by our Patriarchs and Matriarchs. And certainly with the destruction of the Temple and the abandonment of animal sacrifice, prayer has become a foundational stone for post-Temple RABBI Judaism. As students of Torah it is MORRIS ZIMBALIST easy to overlook this transformation and simply accept it as part of our fixed Rabbi Hartman in which the author Jodi tradition. Yet to me, it seems to lay a fluid Rudoren wrote, “Rabbi Hartman…was a foundation for interpretation and application of leading advocate of the idea that Jews are Jewish law and practice thus enabling us to partners with G-d in a covenant, and they continue sacred traditions in modern times. should therefore adapt religious observance to modern values in a multicultural world.” In At this time of the year, our calendar even other words, modern Jews must respect highlights change as we transition from the month tradition while simultaneously embrace change of Tishrei – a month full of holidays and festivals – – a founding tenet of Conservative Judaism. The progressive and open-minded nature of to the month of Heshvan – a month bereft of any Rabbi Hartman’s vision permeates within the formal and traditional celebrations. Oftentimes Hartman Institute – a “Jewish Think-tank” in we joke amongst ourselves that perhaps God Jerusalem which was founded in memory of should have given us a longer duration of time in his father. And for the greater Jewish people, between Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Rabbi Hartman’s philosophy of “adaptation” is Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. Couldn’t deeply rooted within the Torah and seen in our God have spread them out over a few months practical theology both then and now. instead of just one? However, I can’t help but to wonder if in God’s grand design, the month of Times change, but our responsibility to ensure that Judaism maintains its roots steeped in Heshvan was set aside as a time for communal Torah, has not changed. That said, as time assessment in order to identify needs, set goals changes so must we adapt our and development strategies for maximizing Torah understandings, interpretations and accessibility in the years ahead. With many of applications of Torah. Our congregation and the major holidays behind us, and our community needs to continuously strive to congregation and community enthusiastic about make Torah accessible to all. The Book of the year ahead, now is the time to assess our Devarim states (30:12-13), “Lo Bashamayim strengths and weaknesses, hopes and dreams, He – The Torah is not something that is in the and desires for growth, transition and change. Heavens, nor is it something that is across the sea,” rather it is right here with us. This lesson Our challenge is, and will continue to be, to adapt is so important. I hope that we not only ourselves, our rituals and our observances to the recognize and appreciate it, but also apply it ever-changing world that we live in. Our and adapt ourselves accordingly. For our ancestors did this and now, it’s our turn. ancestors, that meant building the Mishkan the sacred Tabernacle – and developing a Rabbi Morris Zimbalist

In February 2013, the Jewish world lost a giant – Rabbi David Hartman, z’’l – who was a champion of need for pluralistic Judaism. Rabbi Hartman was also passionate in his claim that Jews must continue to study and to ask questions with the knowledge that definitive answers may never be found and as times change, our questions will change and therefore our responses must change, too. B’nei Mitzvah Bios With much pride and love, Sarah Esther Besser will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, October 6, 2018. Sarah is a 7th grader at Hawthorn Middle School South in Vernon Hills. Sarah actively participates in band, art club, and student council. She enjoys cooking, photography, painting, and spending time with family and friends. Over the summers, Sarah loves her time at Camp Chi; her “home away from home.” Joining Sarah on her special day are her proud parents, Anna and Michael Besser, siblings Robbie and Miriam, grandparents Susie and Jake Besser and Bella and Izidor Gologorsky as well aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends from near and far. As part of her Mitzvah Project, Sarah, with family and friends, knitted hats for cancer patients at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital. Sarah has also made the decision to donate her hair next month to Wigs for Kids. There is a personal connection, as Sarah has seen family members and friends be affected by cancer and the effects it has on them and their families. The Besser family would like to thank Rabbi Zimbalist, Hazzan Ezring, Hazzan Weisberg, and all of Sarah’s Hebrew school teachers for providing guidance and an excellent Jewish education. Sarah would like to extend a special thank you to Natalie Gurin and Kim Abern, who patiently helped her prepare for this amazing experience.

Shayna Renee Finkel will be called to the Torah on October 20, 2018 at JCC Camp Chi. Shayna is a 7th grader at Twin Groves Junior High School, where her favorite subject is math. When Shayna is no t at school you can usually find her playing lacrosse, field hockey, or at one of her many dance classes. She also loves spending time with her friends and having camp get togethers. Shayna’s favorite time of the year is summer because she has grown up at JCC Camp Chi. Her favorite activities at camp are water skiing, horseback riding, and outdoor cooking. Shayna also loves the partnership Camp Chi shares with Keshet. Because of this special connection, as her Mitzvah Project she has chosen to help make Twiddle Muffs, which is like a fidget cuff, for keshet campers to use while at camp and during the rest of the year. Family and friends are very important to Shayna. She is excited to share her special day with her parents Brad and Rachael, brother Blake, grandmothers Ruth Finkel and Roberta Star, as well as aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends. Shayna would like to thank Rabbi Zimbalist, Cantor Weisberg, Cantor Ezring, Anna Besser and all of her hebrew school teachers who have helped her through the years with her Jewish education. She would also like to thank her amazing tutor, Kim Abern, for all her hard work helping Shayna prepare for this special day.

Shiva Baskets

NEW!! WAYS & MEANS

Sunshine Fund

CBJ Business Directory Advertising Opportunity

The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws. Historically, the Board of Directors of Congregation Beth Judea has sent shiva baskets to the immediate family of Board members; parents, spouses, siblings and G-d forbid, children. We would like to extend this gesture to the entire congregation.

Youth WHAT’S UP IN THE WORLD OF OUR YOUTH??? Leading today for a better tomorrow! This past month and a half we have started out the year growing our next set of Jewish leaders. We have had a chapter LTI (leadership training institute) for our BJUSY board members, a Kadima board meeting and development session for our middle school leaders, and a regional LTI weekend that 19 of our BJUSY members attended. Throughout the course of each of these programs, our teens have been working on skills to help them become the leaders of today and tomorrow. As we have just wrapped up another incredible year of high holidays, I was constantly reminded about just how lucky I am to call CBJ my home. The teen leaders and the adult leaders have all worked so incredibly hard to make high holidays 5779 a huge success. Make sure to take advantage of everything there is here at Congregation Beth Judea, and your family will find that it will become a second home to you as well. To highlight that point I am sharing below reflections from two of our USYers about their experience growing as leaders at LTI. Reflection from Amelia Tehrani 2018-2019 BJUSY Communications Vice-President

My LTI experience! By: Amelia Tehrani Hi! I’m Amelia Tehrani, BJUSY’s 2018-2019 Communications Vice President. This past weekend, I was attending CHUSY’s 2018-2019 LTI convention. This convention really helped me get a better understanding of my position and why it’s so important and how my position affects the whole board. One of the biggest things I’ve learned was how important of a role a communications vice president is, because comm’s are the people who have to help bring in membership by posting about events, taking really fun pictures, and communicating to people. My LTI experience was really helpful for me to learn more about my position and about the REB comm and all of her really helpful tips. I can’t wait for this year to continue being great!

Reflection from Maddie CHUSY President:

Brim

2018-2019

Smiling faces and plenty of new ones — our Leadership Training Intensive Weekend was marked with a 45% increase of USYers over our previous LTI in 2017. It wasn’t just the numbers that stood out to me; the light-hearted atmosphere was filled with passion and a desire to learn. In the opening program, “This is USY,” chapters each got the chance to refocus their year upon core values, smart goals, and mission statements. This refocused program put the emphasis back on the chapters and the individual USYer.

This activity was followed by a presentation focusing on thinking positive, CHUSImTirtzu, and Our USY Promise. We reviewed the statistics of a previous USY experience survey (for example: 94% of teens said USY taught them valuable leadership skills), how a thinking positive focus put on how our work can get results like Beth Judea USY winning International Chapter of the Year in 2017, and an overview of the idea of “We are just USYers serving USYers,” thereby putting the leadership focus back upon the individual USYers & their chapters, rather than the region. Even though it was only 48 hours spent together, I could tell that the USYers who came, came to listen, to learn, and to inspire future generations of USYers. This weekend truly amplified the idea of CHUSImTirtzu, the 2018-2019 year long mission statement, where the Regional Executive Board has a strong focus on turning dreams into a reality for us and the great members of CHUSY Region. The weekend ended with over 120 attendees at our Second City kickoff program, and I cannot wait to experience the same CHUSY spirit at the CHUSY Shabbat on October 12th and CHUSYfest 2018. Sisterhood It’s October, and Fall is definitely upon us. We hope everyone had a wonderful High Holiday season and that you were written into all the very best Books! The good news is that we still get to enjoy Simchat Torah in the very beginning of this month. I don’t know about you, but I love all the joy of this holiday. I just love when they completely unwrap the Torah and give each of us a chance to hold onto a little bit while they reroll it. Who knew an unrolled Torah could take up so much space in our sanctuary? Sisterhood has one of our very best programs coming up - our annual Membership Dinner on Wednesday, October 24th. This year we will be “screening” Inside the Rabbi’s Chamber, where Rabbi Zimbalist will be questioned by Interviewer Rhonda Cohn. This year’s Tikun Olam project will be in honor of Ronald McDonald House Charities. We are asking everyone to bring specific items on the wish list which are listed on the invitation. A delicious dinner will be provided, and you will have FUN at this wonderful annual event. And, if you haven’t already done so, please join Sisterhood so you can get in for FREE!!!

We look forward to seeing so many new faces and “seasoned” faces at all our events this year. Please join us!! Rhonda Cohn & Sarah Goldenberg Co-Sisterhood Presidents Contact Information: Rhonda Cohn: funnymom@cohn1.com Sarah Goldenberg: sarahbgoldenberg@gmail.com

Men’s Club Having taken a breath after the busyness of September, I’d like to tell you about events the Men’s Club has scheduled for October. On October 7, we’ll be taking down the Sukkah. All able-bodied adults are invited and welcome to join us. While not as much fun as putting up the Sukkah, this is still a mitzvah that is just about as fulfilling. The ever-popular Hebrew Literacy I class will start again on October 9. This class is perfect for anyone who would like to learn, improve, or refresh their Hebrew reading skills. Ably led by Eric Yegelwel and Jerry Sakol, this easy to navigate twelve-week class uses familiar songs from the Friday night service as its framework. As a graduate of the class, I can attest to its effectiveness and would highly recommend it. The class culminates on January 11, 2019 when the class participants help lead parts of the service Friday night. Tap the Torah will again be led by Orin Rotman on October 17. This lively discussion will be held as usual at the Buffalo Restaurant and starts at 7:45 PM, after evening minyan. The intriguing topic this month is “Moses on Trial, Part I.”

The Word – October 2018

Lastly, the Men’s Club will be packing Chanukah candles at the synagogue on October 21. Volunteers are needed as always to help complete the process in a prompt fashion. Just as important though, is the need for volunteers to help deliver the candles to each of our congregant families. Delivery routes have been developed using a computer program that clusters congregant homes within a compact area that allows each route to be completed in less than a half hour. This can be a great parent-child opportunity, with the parent doing the driving and the child doing the navigating and bringing the candles to the congregant’s door. Since there are about three dozen routes, the need for volunteers is very strong so that all the candles get delivered in time for Chanukah. Even if you can’t help pack candles, please consider picking up a route map and family list along with the appropriate number of candles sometime when you’re at CBJ – who knows, maybe you’ll be lucky enough to get the route for you own immediate neighborhood. And, as an additional bonus incentive this year, the person who completes the most delivery routes will be awarded a bottle of liquor of their choice (not to exceed $50 value).

Men’s Club OCTOBER MEN’S CLUB SPOTLIGHT MEMBER: NORM KURTZ This month’s spotlighted Men’s Club member is Norm Kurtz. Norm and Joan, his wife of 44 years, have been CBJ members since 1976. They are the parents of three and proud grandparents of six. Norm has been in practicing law for 44 years specializing in real estate transactions and estate planning. His hobbies include reading historical novels and biographies, biking, and horseback riding. Norm’s involvement in CBJ and Men’s Club is quite impressive. He has served on the CBJ Board of Directors for 13 years, leads Shabbat and minyan services, is one of the qualified shiva service leaders, has co-led Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Family Services for 15 years, and led Gan Shabbat for 15 years. Another of Norm’s accomplishments was the development 8 years ago of the Alternative Minyan that has developed a strong following here and has been successfully introduced at other synagogues. On the Men’s Club side of the equation, he has been our club’s President, then moved on to become the FJMC Midwest Region President, and even more impressively, International Men’s Club President. In the mid 1980’s, Norm was one of a few men who were instrumental in resurrecting our men’s club and laying the foundation for what it has become today. Not being one to rest on his laurels, Norm has remained very active in both our club and FJMC Midwest Region, providing mentoring for new and younger members. He is also one of the primary coordinators of our session of the World Wide Wrap and has instructed the Hebrew Literacy class for many years.

Tzedakah Fund The Men's Club has made donations from the minyan tzedakah box: Magen David Adom Jewish National Fund We thank all those who have contributed to the tzedakah fund administered by Men's Club.

INTERFAITH COUNCIL News from the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council By Joanne Dicker and Helene Fox, Beth Judea representatives to the Council

Our next big interfaith event is our annual Thanksgiving Celebration. This year, it will be held at St. Mary Parish on Sunday, November 18, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. It is a wonderful time to gather together with your neighbors in prayer, song, and celebration. Various members of the clergy will be participating, including Rabbi Zimbalist and Cantor Ezring. We have two interfaith choirs: one for adults and one for kids. A bell choir will welcome everyone. There will be an interfaith orchestra and the praise band. After the program, meet your neighbors while snacking upon treats and refreshments donated from many of our local businesses and exceptional bakers in our own congregations. If you are interested in being part of the interfaith adult or children’s choir, please contact the cantor. If you play an instrument and wish to participate, contact Cantor Simon at Temple Chai or Mary Pietro at St. Mary for more information. If you are a baker, your treats are always welcome and should be dropped off at St. Mary’s that Sunday afternoon. Please remember those who are less fortunate. If possible, bring a donation of non-perishable foods to the celebration for those in need. We will distribute the food through our four local food pantries. (Please see flyer on this page).

From The Editors In order for your article to be published in the next issue, we must have it at the synagogue by the 10th of the month! There will be no exceptions. This includes information on disk as well. We need your article as it is important to let the congregation know what your group is doing. Announcements should take the form of articles in The Word rather than separate flyers. The opinions expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Rabbi, Board of Directors or the editors.
