Rabbi’s Reflections JEWISH DEBATE I don’t recall another year when the fall holidays lined up quite so neatly with the month of October. This year, over the course of October’s 31 days, we will experience the joy and solemnity of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the festivities associated with Sukkot and Shemini Atzeret, and the delight of Simhat Torah as we begin the annual cycle of Torah reading. There are also five Shabbatot in October, so in all, 12 of these 31 days will be spent in prayer, reflection, song, study, and rest. Soon after this month of religious holidays we will also engage in the ultimate act of civic responsibility: we will cast votes for presidential, Senate, and House candidates. I will be speaking on the themes of leadership and civility, from a Jewish point of view, on the second day of Rosh Hashanah, and wanted to share some of what I will say here, by way of preview and for the benefit of any who may not be with us that day. There are a number of well-known rabbinic anecdotes about the care and respect with which we are to treat people with whom we disagree. A favorite of mine comes from the Talmud, which records the story of two of the greatest sages of their generation, Rabbi Yohanan and his brotherin-law Reish Lakish. As it happens, Reish Lakish had a sordid past: as a younger man he had entertained the masses in the Roman circuses as a gladiator, killing animals for entertainment. In time he abandoned that life for one centered on Torah study, becoming a great sage and the primary philosophical opponent of Rabbi Yohanan. The two of them argued fiercely over many matters of Jewish law and, on one occasion during an argument over the kashrut of a certain knife, Rabbi Yohanan slighted his brother-in-law, in essence yielding to him by referring to his past career, saying ‘Well, you would know about these things.’ Reish Lakish died of shame, and Rabbi Yohanan spiraled into depression over his feelings of

The Word – October 2016

guilt. When the other sages sent a colleague to comfort him, saying ‘I have a hundred proofs for every one of your utterances,’ Rabbi Yohanan cried out for his brother-in-law, ‘Where is Reish Lakish?’ which is to say, where is the trusted friend who will tell me when I am wrong? Too often we seek comfort in the opinions of those who agree with us, and avoid, or even disparage, those who disagree. We are often so convinced of our own rightness that we cannot admit the possibility that we are wrong or that we are not seeing the whole picture. And as we see too often in public debate, those who disagree often sink into personal attacks, character assassination, and rumor-mongering in order to undermine their opponents. Rabbinic culture, which is to say Jewish culture, prizes disagreement. We insist that the path toward truth can be found only by listening to opposing views, taking their concerns into account, and letting the best argument win the day. As the tale of Rabbi Yohanan and Reish Lakish illustrates, innuendo about intellectual opponents is not only inappropriate, it is shameful. We rely on those who disagree with us to poke holes in our assumptions, to sharpen our own point of view and, when appropriate, to convince us of something that we hadn’t considered before. As Jews, we insist on civility and respect for opposing views because we affirm the humanity and the dignity of those who hold them. We don’t have to agree on everything, but we must all agree to hold others in the same respect that we expect from them. Every human being is created in the image of God. As we begin a new Jewish year, and look ahead to a civil election, we must rededicate ourselves to hold our candidates, and ourselves, to a standard of respect that reflects the best of our tradition.

Congregation Beth Judea commissioned a new sacred scroll, as the next phase of our Me’ah Campaign. This sacred scroll contains all the haftarot read throughout the year and we will be welcomed it into our community on September 18th. This scroll adds a meaningful and unique aspect to our services and also enables families to establish a connection with a particular haftarah. This scroll will uniquely allow the inscription of donor names for each haftarah, honoring B’nai Mitzvah, special anniversaries, birthdays or memorials. The cost of each haftarah sponsorship is $6000, or $100 a month for 60 months. Me’ah Campaign Gift Opportunities $6000 Sponsorship of a Haftarah $3600 Haftarah Sustainer $1800 Haftarah Supporter $540 Haftarah Guardian $100 single verse in the scroll $18 single word in the scroll If you would like to participate in contributing to the Me’ah Campaign please contact our Me’ah chairs Steve Limer or Paul Saharack at meah@bethjudea.org.

President’s Message I hope everyone had a wonderful summer. As a Cubs fan, I loved every minute, and my expectations are over the top- hoping that we will not be saying “wait till next year.” Over the past year, we have spent part of our time together on the High Holidays introducing new programs,

ARNIE GOLDBERG CBJ PRESIDENT

updating congregants on facility improvements, and advising every one of the current climate at CBJ. As we make these announcements and have advertisements in the building, I will be advocating for your personal involvement in assisting the Board of Directors in making the difficult decisions that will help sustain our Congregation for the next fifty years. We have serious work to accomplish that will shape our Congregation for many years to come. This has been, and will continue to be, a year in which we are all tested politically, spiritually, and personally. I hope you can use the High Holidays to reflect on how to interact with the complicated world around us. The Executive Committee and the Board of Directors have already been hard at work over the past several months addressing some of the challenges we will be facing over the next several months. I encourage everyone to get involved in assisting with these decisions by joining a CBJ committee. Please contact me to get more involved or if you have any questions

Our programming year always begins with our Shabbat under the Stars evening. As always it was a wonderful night. Great food, great singing, and, most importantly, an opportunity to spend time with our Beth Judea families. There are several inspirational, quality programs planned for the upcoming months.

The highlight of our programming calendar will be a Cantorial Concert and dinner on December 3rd featuring Hazzan Alberto Mizrahi to honor Hazzan Weisberg and mark his 30th anniversary at CBJ. Please save the date, as this will be an emotional, entertaining evening and one you do not want to miss. I want to thank our clergy, staff, our Executive Committee, our Board of Directors, all those who volunteer their time and money, and all the members of our congregation. Collectively we make Congregation Beth Judea a very special Jewish place. Wishing you and a sweet and healthy New Year, and may you and your families be inscribed for a happy, healthful, and peaceful New Year.

Shana Tova, Arnie Goldberg President CBJ

B’nei Mitzvah Bios Ethan Davidson Zeidman will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, October 22, 2016.

Zachary Benjamin Zeidman will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, October 22, 2016.

Ethan is a seventh grader at Aptakisic Junior High.

Zachary is an eighth grader at Aptakisic Junior High School.

Ethan loves any “real” sport with a ball. He plays soccer for the Lincolnshire Lightning and Aptakisic Junior High School. He also enjoys playing in both the Aptakisic Junior High School band and Jazz Band. He has also spent his summers at Ramah Day Camp. This year, as part of a new program the 7th and 8th graders, Ethan and brother Zachary had the opportunity to develop their leadership skills by helping to run various activities for the younger groups. In addition, they raised money and made capes to donate to Capes for Kids, an organization that provides capes to children in hospitals and shelters to raise their spirits, because capes are just plain awesome and kids love them. As proof, ask Ethan about his socks. Ethan, being a dog lover, was instrumental in finding and rescuing the family dog Molly five years ago. Ethan is looking forward to sharing this special day with his parents, Marc and Rebecca, and his brothers Jared, Michael, and especially Zachary. Grandparents Davita and Ron Bloom, Phillip and Elaine Zeidman. Larry Rosenthal, Sandy and Gene Glass, and Jodi Ream will also be celebrating with Ethan, as will many special aunts, uncles, cousins, and good friends from coast to coast. Ethan and his family would like to thank Rabbi Pivo and Hazzan Weisberg for all their support in helping him prepare for this special day and his many Hebrew School teachers who have contributed to his Jewish education. A special thanks goes to his fantastic tutor, Natalie Gurin for her support in helping him prepare for this important milestone.

He is a very intuitive and creative young man. He enjoys strategy based games like the card game Magic, and the Sid Meier's Civilization series on the computer. This year, as part of a new program the 7th and 8th graders at Camp Ramah, Zachery and brother Ethan had the opportunity to develop their leadership skills by helping to run various activities for the younger groups. B’nei Mitzvah Bios Rebecca Audrey Sturt will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, October 29, 2016. Rebecca is an 8th grader at The Einstein Academy in Elgin. She plays softball on the Libertyville Wildcats 14u travel team and enjoys horseback riding, singing, dancing, music, video games, Rubik’s cubes, hanging out with her friends, movies, cooking with her mom, shopping, and of course, all animals. Over the years, Rebecca has volunteered and participated in numerous fundraisers and activities for animals as well as a variety of charities and other causes that she is passionate about. For her Mitzvah Project, Rebecca is collecting donations and finding other ways of raising funds to help sponsor a student’s tuition to attend The Einstein Academy. She feels that everyone should have the opportunity to receive the kind of high quality, individualized education that she is getting. Rebecca is looking forward to sharing her special day with all of her family and friends. She is excited to share this celebration with her parents, Michael and Cheryl, her little brother, Brian, her grandmother, Edith Rubenfaer, and her Zaydie, Norman Sturt. Her greatgrandparents, Benny and Sarah Rubenfaer, and her Bubbe, Francine Sturt will be tremendously missed; they will all be with us in spirit. Rebecca is fortunate to bring together aunts, uncles, cousins, as well as other family and friends who will be traveling from Florida, Indiana, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey, Texas, and Wisconsin. Rebecca and her family would like to thank Hazzan Weisberg, Rabbi Pivo, and all of her teachers throughout the years for all of their assistance, education, guidance, and support in reaching this momentous occasion.

Religious Education High Holidays through the Five Senses It’s the time of year when we reflect inward. We take stock of the past year and look forward to the next year. Being able to experience the High Holidays through our senses provides opportunities for reflection and introspection. Shehechiyanu: Appreciating the New On the second night of Rosh Hashanah, we taste, smell and touch a new fruit – ideally one we’ve never encountered, or at least one we have not yet had this season. This lesser known tradition invites us to give blessing to that which is new, and appreciate meaningful opportunities and challenges in our lives and the lives of those we care for. Honey: Adding Sweetness to Our Lives Israel is known for delicious apples and its biblical promise of being a land of milk and honey. It is not surprising that we start the Jewish year with the promise of sweetness as we dip apples into honey. By doing so, we embody the Rosh Hashanah greeting of Shanah Tovah u'Metukah – sharing with one another a blessing for a sweet New Year. This is yet another example of how sensory immersion invites opportunity for personal and communal reflection. Courtesy of www.theicenter.org TASTE: Cook, bake, and prepare. Even our youngest children can help bake by adding ingredients for honey cake or knead hallah dough and shape it in a round. While we enjoy our usual taste of apples and honey, try a new fruit this year…how about a pomegranate, dragon fruit, star fruit, or pawpaw? SIGHT: Light Yom Tov candles with your children. The flickering beauty of candles on the table is exciting to little eyes. SMELL: It is said that our olfactory sense is the key to our longest-held memories. Aromas of chicken soup and brisket roasting in the oven evoke the warm anticipation of family gathering for a holiday meal. TOUCH: Touch is not just about the feel of objects but also about the feeling created by snuggling together for a great book. Touch can communicate our love for our children beyond words. SOUND: Hear the sound of the Shofar. Its calls resonate for each of us differently each time we hear them. Sing Rosh Hashanah songs, Tapuchim U’Dvash, Shanah Tova, and many more. Music and singing is comforting. The songs touch our souls not just by their words and melodies, but by the people with whom we sing. Those memories remain in our hearts forever. Wishing you good health, happiness, peace and prosperity. Today and all through the year! L’shanah Tovah!

ADULT EDUCATION Hebrew Classes Torah Reading Taught by Hazzan Weisberg How and why did our cantillation system come about? Once you learn the different signs, their sounds and how they structure each sentence of Torah, you will be able to chant the text with accuracy and conviction. This is a wonderful and useful skill and can be a meaningful way to participate in synagogue life. You should be able to read Hebrew with some fluency, and carry a tune; you will NOT need to read music. COST: textbook $25; an iPad or smartphone is recommended Tuesday Evenings; 6:15 – 7:15 pm Sept. 6, 2016 – March 21, 2017 (No classes in Oct., Nov. 22, Dec.13, 27, Jan. 3)

Ulpan 1 Taught by Lee Goldberg

In this course, students will develop reading fluency and understanding of Hebrew word and sentence structures. We will then move into Hebrew grammar and learn to converse: how to order food in a restaurant, shop, and tell the doctor what hurts and have fun doing it, with songs, word games, and imagery. The ability to read the alephbet is required. Textbook Fee: $20 Thursday evenings; 8:00 – 9:00 pm Oct. 6 – May 18, 2017

Ulpan 2 Taught by Lee Goldberg

In this course we will continue from where we left off last year. We'll continue learning Hebrew grammar while learning to order food in a restaurant, shop, and tell the doctor what hurts and have fun doing it, with songs, word games, and imagery. The ability to read the aleph-bet is required. The morah, teacher, Lee Goldberg, taught Hebrew for more than 20 years. She thinks that Hebrew is the perfect language and loves to excite others to learn it and enjoy it! Textbook Fee: $85 Thursday evenings; 6:30 – 7:30 pm Sept. 8, 2016 – May 18, 2017

Sisterhood Sisterhood has many wonderful events coming up this year, and we would like to share some of these with you. Before we do that, we have to say how much we all enjoyed the Sisterhood membership dinner on August 31st. It was a wonderful evening shared by so many of our “sisters!” Thank you so much to Leslie Peck and her awesome team for planning the joyful evening. It was wonderful to share a lovely dinner together, and we thoroughly enjoyed hearing Sue Lewis and her talk on Bubbe Meises.

By the time you’re reading this, we will also have had fun socializing and using our creativity at our Sept. 28th social program at Color Me Mine in Vernon Hills. Thanks so much to Sarah Goldenberg for planning this fun event. Please join us for our upcoming programs. We’d love to have you! See flyers for details and RSVP information. Wed., October 26 Sisterhood/Hadassah Author visit event; Ronald Balson will be discussing his new book Karolina’s Twins. Sun., November 13 Docent led tour at Illinois Holocaust Museum in conjunction with our book club read of Half the Sky; Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide. You do not have to be in our book club – or have read the book to attend. Our next Sisterhood board meeting is at CBJ, November 8th at 8pm. All are welcome! As we approach the High Holidays, we begin to ponder how we can improve ourselves in the coming year. We may wonder how we can become more compassionate, humble, and respectful. Bryant H. McGill is quoted as saying, “One of the most sincere forms of respect is actually listening to what another has to say.” I’d like to share with you a few thoughts regarding this topic from Carol Simon, Women’s League for Conservative Judaism’s International President. Studies have shown that many of us

The Word - October 2016

listen, but with half an ear…the other half is our brain working to respond, or thinking of something totally unrelated. Our body language also lets others know if we are truly listening. Take the time to notice and improve your listening skills, both verbal and non-verbal. Conflicts with friends and family can be resolved more easily if we listen and speak with respect. Let’s strive to keep our judgments to a minimum and make compassion and respect our goal. Please feel free to contact us with any suggestions you may have for future programming of education or social activities. We welcome your ideas and input! Men’s Club Ladies and Gentlemen of Beth Judea, this past August 28th, The Men’s Club hosted the Jack Rizman Memorial Golf Outing. It has occurred to me that a great many of our members do not know who Jack Rizman was. He was a founding member of our Synagogue and a very active member, serving our Shul and community with great enthusiasm. We at Beth Judea are still enjoying the benefits of Jack’s diligent work and pioneering spirit that pushed us through our difficult beginning. He was a longtime member of our choir, served on the Men’s Club, Ritual Committee, and Board of Directors. He was an inspiration to a great many people with his charm, wit, musical talents, and a general easy going nature. The fund that bears his name has generously donated monies to every one of our musical events since its inception. This coming Cantor’s Concert on December 3rd was made possible in part by the Jack Rizman Fund. I myself feel blessed to be a part of this synagogue that has had such a strong foundation and steady leadership carrying us thru today. Ladies and Gentlemen, there is a saying, “It takes a whole village to raise one child.” That being said, it takes a whole month to make one WORD. As I write this article on the 12th of September, I think of all the events that will happen in the next two weeks. By the time you read this, those will be in our past. October 3rd will start our new year. In that light, I humbly ask all whom I have offended to please forgive

me, and I give full pardon to all who may have hurt me. October 6th is the next Men’s Club meeting. Sunday October 9th at 10:00 am, we will be building our Sukkah. Anybody with a drill or skill would be appreciated. Please join Men’s Club for our Tap the Torah on Nov. 2nd. It will be at my house. 1121 Twisted Oak ln. Featuring Orin Rotman and a real live fire pit (and beer). More details to follow. Kol Nidre is on October 11th and I wish everyone a meaningful fast. May we all be written in The Book of Life for the new year. Saturday October 22nd at 9:30 am, the Men’s Club will once again be volunteering at the Lieberman Center Nursing Home. This is a very rewarding and meaningful mitzvah. Contact me or Sandy Ramras if you would like more details or are interested in joining us. Sunday October 23rd at 5:00 pm is our Steak and Scotch in the Sukkah. Please look for the flyer in the WORD and weekly announcements. Sun. Oct. 30th, we take down the Sukkah, and Ladies and Gents, that’s our month. Good health and safe travels to you all. Jerry Sakol Men’s Club President

INTERFAITH COUNCIL News from the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council This month, many members of the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council will be celebrating the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah) on October 3-4, followed by the “Days of Awe,” and culminating in Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. It is a time of celebration and a time of reflection. We ask for forgiveness from G-d and those we have harmed during the course of the year. We attempt to correct the damage we have caused. How can this be achieved? We can follow three paths: give to charity and support the needy; repent by acknowledging our shortcomings and resolving to not repeat the mistakes of the past; and come together in prayer. In this spirit, we ask that you join us this year at our upcoming Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration Service on Sunday, November 20, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Mary Parish, 10 N. Buffalo Grove Road, Buffalo Grove, IL. Sing words of praise. Listen to our adult and children choirs from our combined congregations. Enjoy the puppets. Gather with your neighbors after the service for refreshments. The Thanksgiving Celebration is open to all. We ask that you remember the less fortunate who live in our community and bring non-perishable food for our four food pantries that serve our community to the service. Please remember the less fortunate who live in our community throughout the year. Donations may be made directly to: Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council 1282 Green Knolls Drive Buffalo Grove, IL 60089 For more information on any of our programs please contact: nwsinterfaith@gmail.com or by telephone at: 224699-0386 or visit our website at: http://www.northwestsuburbaninterfaith.org or your council representatives: Joanne Dicker: joannedicker@comcast.net Helene Fox: helene125125@gmail.com
