Rabbi's Reflections Legacies I will be fifty years old this year. For most of my adult life I have paid so little attention to my age that I would sometimes have to calculate what it was from my birthdate. But approaching this birthday feels different. It is totally irrational. We all know that there is not much difference in our lives from one year to the next; being fifty is no more significant than forty nine or fifty one. Still, the number has focused my attention on big questions more than anything else recently, reminding me that my life is, at best, two thirds over. What has it all meant? What have I achieved, and what is there left to do in the time left to me? These are questions that we all ask ourselves. As we get older and see children grow up and establish lives of their own, and as older family members and friends pass away, we inevitably begin to consider our place in the world and the idea of life after death – not in a spiritual sense, of our personal experience of the next world, but life in this world after we die. We want to know what our legacy will be. Leaving possessions, memories, and life lessons to family are certainly primary concerns, but they are not the only ones. Beyond the impact we have had on those closest to us, what have we done to ensure that the institutions we love will survive us? What steps have we taken to improve the lives of people we may never meet? How will we perpetuate the traditions that have tied us together as Jews, even when we no longer walk the earth? None of us has had success in life without the often unacknowledged efforts of others who preceded us. We need to ‘pay it forward’ and do the same for those who will follow us. This year I would like the focus of our prayer, study, and celebrations to be on the theme of legacy. We need to think about our dearest values as individuals and as a
The Word – September 2015
community, and then make concrete plans to make those values outlive us through specific actions. There are a number of ways we will do this. First, as we expand the reach of our ongoing Me’ah campaign to establish a large endowment fund, each of us must step up to contribute. Be ready to make a meeting with a committee representative to take part in a meaningful way. Second, we will begin a congregational discussion about membership for area families and the synagogue. If we are not meeting the needs of Jews in our neighborhood, what can we do differently to do so? Third, we will re-examine our ritual practices, re-emphasizing those which will best educate and inspire us, and de-emphasizing those which have simply become habit. Fourth, we will engage in a communal dialogue about the future direction of our clergy team. In just three years, Hazzan Weisberg will retire. Now is the time to talk about our path forward after that time. Fifth, we will create relationships that will heal our society and the world by committing to social action programs that will lift up the lives of those outside the walls of the synagogue. Each of these areas – the Me’ah campaign; Membership; Ritual Observance; Religious Leadership; Social Action – is an opportunity to build our legacy. Over the coming fall holidays, the Yamim Nora’im, I will be speaking about each of these efforts in more detail, and will expect each member of our community to consider the legacy they would like to live far beyond our own years. As we think about teshuvah/repentance in the weeks to come, I am confident that we will find the inspiration to make the coming year one of great achievements for ourselves and for those who will inherit the world from us. Shanah tovah tikateivu u’tikhateimu, may you be inscribed and sealed for a good year. Hag same’akh, Rabbi Jeff Pivo

Cantor’s Column “You Say You Want a ReSOLUTION...” “Well, you know, we all want to change the world,” John Lennon once said. He went to suggest that we should free our minds instead! We each have a role to play in this world, we can make a difference…but during the High Holidays, our focus is directed inward: what changes should I be making in my world? How do we open our hearts and minds to new possibilities? John Lennon, one of my personal heroes, was a dreamer, as I was reminded when I visited the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame in July. He was part of a musical revolution, but he would often combine his music with powerful, meaningful messages. He taught us to be more sensitive to others, urged us to “imagine” a better world, one filled with love and peace. John Lennon’s middle name was Winston, named after Winston Churchill, the British heroic prime minister when Lennon was born. Ironic, perhaps, since Churchill was the realist who brought his people through the dark days of World War II after his predecessor, Neville Chamberlain, tried to appease Hitler, acceding to his outrageous demands, hoping to avert war. Was he too idealistic to believe that the Nazis would actually carry out their diabolical plans? John Lennon’s life was marked by much tragedy as well – he had to choose between living with his mother or father at the age of 5, his years were cut short in his prime by an act of violence. But he spoke up for the oppressed, for kindness and peace. So what is the message for us? It is time to make some resolutions. The Holy Days remind us that through sincere repentance, prayer, and giving to others in need, we can indeed succeed in bringing positive change into our lives and into the world. May G-d help us overcome bad habits and reach our personal goals. Perhaps together we “will” make a difference, bring the world a little closer to true peace and a lasting freedom. Congress, for example, is about to vote on the Iranian agreement. What are its
The Word - September 2015
implications for Israel, for the Middle East, for us? Millions of lives may hang in the balance. If you have not yet done so, you can still contact your legislators and let them know your position. One final note: In early July, 2016, Rabbi Lifshitz and I hope to bring a group from Beth Judea to Spain, as part of a mission being organized by the Cantors Assembly and the Conservative Movement. This unique trip will highlight the Sephardic experience, the Golden Age of Spanish Jewry which existed for a thousand years until the Inquisition in 1492. Rabbi Lifshitz and I have each visited Spain in recent years, and are looking forward to sharing our own experiences and background with you, together with expert tour guides. We will have a chance to interact with the Jewish communities that are still there today, to learn of their struggles as well as their successes. While some parts of Europe are experiencing an upsurge in anti-Semitism, the Spanish government has recently issued a strong statement condemning boycotts of Israel and opening the door to citizenship for Jews with Spanish roots. We need to show them our support and appreciation! If the trip is too expensive, we could make some modifications, to better suit the needs of our members. Please do let one of us know if you have any interest and would like to discuss further! I can be reached at hazzanweisberg@bethjudea.org or through the synagogue office. Audrey joins me in wishing each of you a wonderful, healthy, joyous and sweet New Year in 5776. We look forward to seeing you in shul during the coming High Holidays and throughout the year ahead. President’s Message The Art of Volunteering “It is in giving we receive” In Parsha Vayyakhel, we learn that G-d commands the Jewish people in the desert to build the Tabernacle, a place ARNIE GOLDBERG where G-d would dwell in CBJ PRESIDENT their midst. Moses asks that each person contribute everything needed for the Tabernacle, and that every person who is inspired and capable should create what G-d commanded. Every person is to become involved in the work of building the Tabernacle. The people were so inspired that Moses needed to call a moratorium because everyone was so moved that too much was provided and too many skilled workers volunteered. When I was in high school (a very long time ago), I remember my teachers suggesting we participate in extra curriculum activities to help others and to round out our education (also to fill in another line on our college application). The parsha Vayyakhel epitomizes life’s extra activities. Moses asks the people to assist in building the Tabernacle by volunteering, not only tangible possessions, but also their time, wisdom, and expertise. So it is at CBJ; we volunteer to enrich our synagogue experience. For those congregants who give freely of their time, please accept my heartfelt appreciation for all you contribute. However, we are always in search of additional congregants with specific skills to assist our staff, clergy and lay leaders in managing the operations of our Congregation. I am asking those members who are, as of yet, not as engaged in synagogue life to consider volunteering just a few hours every month. There are several ways you can contribute to the congregation: Daily Minyan Many of our members regularly attend Minyan, but we often do not have a sufficient number of congregants to make a minyan either in the morning or the evening every day. Your participation would be a mitzvah in helping those who want to say Kaddish.
The Word - September 2015
Shabbat Services Part of being a Jewish community is to worship as a community. I find our Shabbat services not only to be inspirational, but also educational, as we learn from the weekly parsha and the Rabbi’s sermon. Not only are we appreciative of those who attend and participate, but welcome volunteers who are able to read Torah and Haftorah. After Friday evening services, we gather for an oneg and on Saturday morning for a kiddush with our fellow members where we have the opportunity to better get to know one another and further connect with our synagogue. Standing Committees There are many standing committees constantly seeking additional volunteers to help manage the day to day operations of the Synagogue. Our standing committees are Finance, Ways and Means, Education, Ritual, Programming, Membership, Youth, Facilities, Social Action, Israel Affairs and Planned Giving. Special committees There are already several functioning special committees: Personnel, Communications, and Me’ah. Immediately after the High Holidays, I will be forming two additional special committees. First, a committee to review our dues structure and recommend possible revisions; and second, a technical committee to help refine our communications, systems, network, software, and our web site. If you have any of these specific technical skills we would greatly appreciate your help. We are also looking for Congregants with expertise in sales and marketing who would be willing to assist several of our standing committees market and publicize our shul events. Just a few hours of your time can make a significant difference in advancing our Congregation Beth Judea’s growth and sustainability.
I personally want to wish everyone a Shana Tova. May you be inscribed in the Book of life in the year 5776. Arnie Goldberg President

BLOCK PARTY 2015
Thank you to the more than 120 adults and children who came out in the heat to celebrate the end of summer and back to school at our annual CBJ Block Party! Everyone had a fantastic time. With crafts for the tots, music with Howard from A-Z, and a great playground too, everyone had a fantastic time. A water balloon toss gave the kids a little relief from the heat. The highlight of the day was the youth winning (for a change) the softball game against Men’s Club! Way to go USY! A great big thank you goes out to Mitch Weiss and Bruce Darin for grilling our hot dogs and veggie burgers, to Men’s Club for helping us bring everything to the park, and of course to Manny, Sarit, and Lisa for all of their help. - Tammy Brody, Programming VP

He has been busily preparing for this special day with his tutor, Kim Abern. David is a 7th grade student at Twin Groves and recently made sectionals for track and field. His family looks forward to his achievements on the track in the upcoming season. David is excited to be joined by his proud parents, Craig and Katya, and his grandmother Gilian from South Africa. He also thinks of his grandparents, Olga and Anatoly, who are unable to travel from Russia for this important milestone in his life. David and his family also fondly recall his late grandfather Derek (z'l), who is always in his thoughts.
The Smolensky family would like to thank Rabbi Pivo, Hazzan Weisberg, his tutor Kim Abern, and everyone who helped prepare him for this special day. Interpretive Minyan in the Library Service Leader: Norm Kurtz You are invited to join the Interpretive Minyan in the Library the first and third Shabbat of every month. Brandon Matthew Turofsky is looking forward to his upcoming Bar Mitzvah on September 26, 2015. He has worked very long and hard towards his special day and is so excited to share it with his family and friends. Brandon is an amazing young man who is able to take on all different challenges that he is faced with. His hard work, positive attitude, and perseverance has always been the key towards his success. His parents are proud of him today and every day. When Brandon is not studying for his upcoming bar mitzvah, he spends a lot his time playing baseball, which has been a passion that Brandon for many years. This year he was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to play in a tournament in Cooperstown, NY at Dreams Park, considered the mecca tournament for travel baseball players. All four of Brandon’s grandparents were even able to travel to New York to watch him play and support him Helping him celebrate his special day are his parents, Steven and Staci, his grandparents Susan & Allen Hymen and Marla & Melvin Turofsky; his nine year old sister, Amanda, has also been looking forward to this day, knowing that her bat mitzvah is only a few more years away. Brandon will also be joined by his two uncles, Jeff Turofsky and Mark Kreger, and countless members of his family and friends. This past May, Brandon's 44 year old aunt, Robyn Kreger, lost her battle with breast cancer. While she’ll physically not be present with him on his special day, she’ll be with him in his heart and spirit.
We meet in the synagogue library on the second floor from 10:30 until 11:45. We look forward to welcoming you to our community. Shabbat shalom, Norm Kurtz

LIFE IN ISRAEL THE GOODMAN’S BLOG
Did You Know... In the last issue of The Word the Goodman’s talked about the Sar El program. Laura and Stan Zoller are currently participating in that program.
Howie and Suzanne Goodman were valued members at Beth Judea until they decided to make aliyah in 2009. The Goodmans have agreed to provide us with a blog on their experiences as new olim in Israel. Though we continue to miss the Goodmans, we can all look forward to reading about their adventures in Israel through the blog.
The Sar El program is, where volunteers are stationed on IDF (Israel Defense Force) or IAF (Israel Air Force) posts for two or three weeks where they do work in place of israel soldiers. In this issue the Goodman’s talk about meeting up with the Zollers in Tel Aviv. .

Religious Education Show Us the Honey How can we make CBJ Religious School a sweet experience for our students and their families? On Rosh Hashanah, we dip apple slices into honey to internalize the sweetness. We also give students a taste of honey on the first day they attend school, to symbolize that their attainment of Jewish knowledge is sweet. Let’s take a minute to explore honey… Honey's unique qualities. On Rosh Hashanah, we use honey rather than sugar for the appledipping custom. Why? According to Rabbi Schneur Zalman, honey absorbs and preserves its contents. As we study together, the learning sticks with us and infuses our lives. Raw = life. Some people prefer using raw honeycombs. Did you know that “Chai” not only means life, but it also means raw? As we dip our apples and challah into honey, we wish is to be inscribed in the Book of Life. To bee or not to bee? Did you know that honey can be made from dates? The honey of Eretz Yisrael was made from dates or grapes or figs or raisins because the land at the time had no domestic bees, only Syrian bees. To extract honey from their combs, it had to be smoked. We prefer to use bee’s honey for Rosh Hashanah because even though bees have a sting within them, their product is sweet. We pray for a sweet result (inscribed in the Book of the Life) that is tempered by God’s mercy and compassion. I wish you and your family a Shanah Tova U’Metukah. May it be a sweet year of learning for all!
CBJ Religious School receives a $10,000 Grant Congregation Beth Judea’s Religious School is one of the recipients of the Best Practices in Jewish Education grants from the Community Foundation for Jewish Education. CBJ was awarded a $10,000 grant for this upcoming year. The Best Practice grant is to help congregation education programs build on what they already are doing well. CBJ’s Religious School will be using the grant money to expand our Shabbatonim programs. Shabbatonim are an excellent way to engage our students and teach them through experiences. It is an opportunity for them to connect not only with their peers and teachers, but to also gain an appreciation for Shabbat; a chance to slow things down and enjoy being “unplugged.” Grade-level Shabbatonim help us promote Shabbat observance, K’lal Yisrael and Talmud Torah. We believe the experience can only benefit our students; it gives them an understanding of why it’s important to take a day off, be on a different schedule, celebrate and learn as a community, and build bonds that will last for years to come. We want to thank the Community Foundation of Jewish Education for their generosity. We look forward to being able to implement new and exciting ideas in this year’s kallot.

SISTERHOOD Sisterhood – Sept 2015 Every woman has the opportunity to participate in preserving, promoting, and perpetuating Conservative/Masorti Judaism through active giving to the Torah Fund Campaign of Women’s League in support of The Jewish Theological Seminary (New York, NY), Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies (Los Angeles, CA), and the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies (Jerusalem). The Torah Fund Campaign began in 1942 as a scholarship fund. In 1963, it merged with the Mathilde Schechter Residence Hall campaign that provided housing for undergraduate students. In time, the campaign identified needs and raised funds for specific projects, including: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
Women’s League Educational Pavilion (Kripke Tower) Women’s League Seminary Synagogue Mathilde Schechter Residence Hall Renovations Goldsmith Hall Residence Hall at the American Jewish University JTS quadrangle JTS Library Bookshelves Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies Garden
For the past several years, funds raised by Torah Fund have gone toward scholarships to all the schools. There are continuing opportunities for sisterhoods and individuals to provide support to all four institutions through Torah Fund. Thousands of dedicated volunteers have contributed to the spiritual, esthetic, and material well being of these educational communities by supporting Torah Fund projects. TORAH FUND PIN FOR 5776 (2015-2016) Nat’ah Karem is a phrase from the beloved prayer Eishet Chayil, taken from the biblical book of Proverbs. We re-envision this prayer today with appreciation for the hard-working, generous, family-oriented woman who “plants a vineyard by her own labors” (Proverbs 31:7). We honor her productivity, independence, creativity, and orientation to a hopeful future with the 2016 Torah Fund pin/pendent. Women’s League’s support of the Torah Fund Campaign helps strengthen Conservative/Masorti Judaism throughout the world and enhances the Jewish community by recognizing and appreciating our diverse families. Beth Judea Sisterhood is very proud of our Torah Fund Vice President, Pam Herstein. Last year, we exceeded our fund raising goal because of her hard work and dedication. Please contact Pam to make your donations to our Sisterhood Torah Fund Campaign. Love and best wishes, always. L'shana Tovah, Sherry and Kitty Sisterhood Co-Presidents

Men’s Club Less than half of those in attendance at a Shabbat service in Conservative/Masorti synagogues are comfortable praying in Hebrew. This inability to read Hebrew poses an immediate and personal problem. It impedes our participation in Jewish life. Our services call for passionate davening and active participation but how can meaningful participation be achieved and the desired passion be realized if we are not comfortable with Hebrew? English cannot replace the richness of the Hebrew language and all of the associations it carries. Without the ability to read Hebrew, most of the service is off limits. The Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs recognized this problem many years ago and developed the Hebrew Literacy Program. The course is designed to teach adults with no previous (or forgotten) knowledge of Hebrew how to read. The class is a twelve-week program that focuses on learning to read the prayers used in the Friday night service. Congregation Beth Judea’s Men’s Club is once again offering this class which is scheduled to meet on Tuesday evenings beginning on September 1. Graduation will take place during the Friday Night Service on December 11, 2015.
Tzedakah Fund The Men's Club has made donations from the minyan tzedakah box to: Hillel We thank all those who have contributed to the tzedakah fund administered by Men's Club.
HELP THE ELDERLY ATTEND SERVICES Once a month, the Beth Judea Men’s Club volunteers at the Lieberman Geriatric Center and helps the elderly get to and from services. We need volunteers for September...
Men’s Club will again be sponsoring Project Isaiah. We will provide paper bags on Rosh Hashanah. We ask that you fill these bags with nonperishable kosher food items and bring them with you to services on Kol Nidre. High school volunteers will collect the bags, which will then be donated to the Ark. This is a great way to start the New Year by giving to those who are less fortunate. The fall season is also the time we celebrate Sukkot. Please join Sandy Victor and the rest of the Men’s Club construction crew when we build the Sukkah on September 20. Carpentry skills are not required. Men’s Club's most popular event, Steak and Scotch in the Sukkah, is scheduled for October 4. Please add this to your calendar, as this evening has always been one of Men’s Club’s bestattended and most popular events. The annual Dr. Jack Rizman Memorial Golf Outing was held August 30. Thank you to Chuck Walcer, Morry Rizman, and Allen Harris for chairing this event. Men’s Club meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month at 8 PM. All members of Men’s Club are more than welcome to attend our meetings. Men’s Club provides a great opportunity to get involved in the ritual, social and/or educational activities of our synagogue. Through Men’s Club you can help support our youth, enhance Jewish observance, increase involvement in the Jewish community, and work on projects to support our congregation,. Men’s Club creates camaraderie and ruach all while having fun at the same time! Wishing you and your families a Shana Tova, Eric Yegelwel

YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE We firmly believe that reaching out to others benefits not only the recipient, but the person providing help as well. This is, without a doubt, a win-win situation for all involved. If you are interested in making a difference, please contact one of the Hesed (Caring) committee members below: Rabbi Pivo Ellene Lammers Wendy Wunsch Evan Rumack
We Would Like To Know WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance.
Upon three things the world is based: Upon Torah, Upon Divine Service and
Upon the Practice of Charity
If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records. Please call the synagogue office with this information. Do not assume that someone else will have notified the synagogue staff.
PLANNED GIVING Look here next month for planned giving details.

SHALVA “Its okay, the children aren’t effected” But what if you knew they were?
Did you Know……… SHALVA Collects Cellphones?
Shalva clients will often say that they can withstand their husband’s abuse as long as he never directs his anger toward their children. What many women don’t understand is that children are the silent victims of abuse and that they often repeat the behaviors they have seen.
For quite a few years now, Congregation Beth Judea has been generously collecting cell phones for SHALVA.
According to a recent study, over 90% of children are aware of domestic abuse in their home. These children are affected emotionally, cognitively, and physically. They are at great risk and often experience low selfesteem, shame, fear and guilt. Many distrust adults, fail to thrive or suffer from depression and anxiety. What can we do? The issue of domestic abuse is not just a women’s issue; it affects the entire family as well as our Jewish community. SHALVA offers free counseling to Jewish women who are or were in an intimate partner relationship. If you or someone you know needs our help, call 773-583-4673.
We thought you’d enjoy knowing a bit about how this process works. After we gather the phones you put into the collection box, we ship them to a recycling operation in Florida, Shelter Alliance . They pay us according to the “blue book”value of each phone. In processing the thousands of phones we send them every year, they wipe clean all your personal data and either refurbish your phones, recycle the parts or melt them down. Each year SHALVA receives around $40005,000 just by collecting your old or broken cellphones. All of these dollars go directly to help our clients. Recently Shelter Alliance has expanded their recycling program and now accepts Ipods, Ipads, and Readers. So, the next time you pass by the synagogue office and see the SHALVA collection box, think about all those old cellphones, ipads and ipods taking up space in your drawer or closet, and help us turn them into dollars for clients.
Upon three things the world is based: Upon Torah, Upon Divine Service, and Upon the Practice of Charity.
Cell Phone Drop-Off Box In Synagogue Office! Help domestic abuse victims by donating your old cell phones. Each phone raises money for domestic abuse crisis-counseling services in the Jewish community! There is a collection box in the synagogue office. The Word - September 2015
