FROM THE RABBI Thank you for your warm welcome to Beth Judea! I feel blessed to be in this beautiful community. I am eager to start the work you brought me here to do: helping you move into a healthy future. I look forward to greeting you all in the weeks ahead.

It has not taken me long to discover that CBJ has a wonderful cantor, education director, and executive director, a dedicated staff, and a caring leadership.

No one knows better than you the changes that this congregation needs. BEN SAYPOL MEMORIAL SERVICE

CLERGY SEARCH UPDATE

On Friday evening, September 8th, Beth Judea will be holding a special Shabbat Service as a memorial tribute to our dear friend Ben Saypol. We have invited Ben's mother, Judye Groner and his wife, Lyn Dickinson, but unfortunately neither of them will be able to join us. Ben's mother will be sending some words that we will share that evening.

Look here for regular updates from both the rabbi and second clergy search committees. The co-chairs of the rabbi search committee are Bruce Darin, Tammy Brody, and Michael Gluck. The co-chairs for the second clergy search (Hazzan Weisberg's replacement after his retirement) have also been named - Scott Eisner, Gary Ernsteen, and Rachel Jordan. The two committees will be closely linked with each other to assure a unified approach to meeting CBJ's vision for filling these very important positions.

We are asking our CBJ community to attend and everyone will be given an opportunity to share personal thoughts about Ben. We hope you will be able to join us. We are in the process of establishing a Ben Saypol Memorial Fund. If any member would like to contribute to the fund in memory of Ben, it will be greatly appreciated by our synagogue and also by Ben's family. The fund will be used for beautification of the synagogue and its grounds as well as for cantorial services and High holiday services.

Much of the committee work will commence after the high holidays. However, the 2nd clergy committee leads are seeking volunteers representative of CBJ membership to join the committee at this time. If you are interested in joining the 2nd clergy search committee, please contact any of the co-chairs before September 8th. ernsteeng@yahoo.com, scott.eisner1@gmail.com, or rachela32@yahoo.com.

Sincerely, Sidney Mathias CBJ President

Ryan Hunter Scheibe will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, September 9, 2017.

Jack is an 8th grader at Lake Zurich Middle School North. He is an active active member of the District 95 stage crew; participating behind the scenes in many shows. Jack is a huge hockey and Chicago Blackhawks fan. He loves to volunteer when he can and enjoys working with younger children. Jack was a volunteer in the Hebrew School as a heh student and hopes to be a madrich in coming years. He served as a counselor in training at JCC Camp Apachi. Jack has unique talents with coordination and scheduling and is often found assisting during school and unique situations.

Ryan is an honor student at Larsen Middle School in Elgin.

Joining Jack in his simcha will be his proud parents Ken and Beth, sister Elana, grandparents Barry and Donna Jeross and Harvey and Pam Redfern, Harriet Jacobs and John Domke, and aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends. Jack and his family would like to thank Rabbi Klatzker, Hazzan Weisberg, and his tutor Kim Abern for their help in preparing him for this day. A Hearty Mazel Tov to all our September B’nei Mitzvah

from the Beth Judea Family.

The Word - September 2016

Ryan’s effort and dedication with his school work is more than most children his age. He takes school seriously and strives to reach each and every goal he sets for himself. Ryan loves all types of cars, but has a special passion for Dodge cars. He spends his free time washing and detailing cars until they shine! Ryan spends hours learning and researching different vehicles to continue to be ahead of the game with the latest models and designs. He can tell you what has changed daily on all kinds of cars! He has helped people research cars to find what fits best for them. As part of his Mitzvah project, Ryan will be donating toy cars to children in need. Ryan has the biggest heart and is the most unselfish person. He uses this innate trait when he donates his time to help in Hebrew school, his Bubbie & Zadie around the house, and when he takes care of his younger brother and children of all ages. Ryan has a strong sense about others and when someone needs help or just a friend he is there. His parents can always rely on him when they need anything because he just jumps in! Ryan will be celebrating this special milestone with his proud parents, Tammy and Tim Scheibe, his two best friends, his brothers, Nathan and Logan, Bubbie and Zadie, family, and friends. Ryan would like to thank his “crew” of educators who have guided him to be successful with Judaic learning. Thank you Cantor Weisberg, Anna Besser, Hebrew school teachers, and especially the “Crew Chief”, Natalie Gurin.

Ways & Means xxIt seems obvious why fundraising is important: to raise funds for needed items, services, and programs. Yet, raising funds has so many other benefits besides the obvious. MITCH HECHT WAYS & MEANS VP

Often, budgets get cut or less than ideal family situations mean that children must go without things or activities that their classmates receive, and later life opportunities may be diminished because of it. There are, unfortunately, needs of great variety all around us, and fundraising will most likely be an aspect of our lives for generations to come. But raising funds for a cause has a lot more benefits than taking care of an obvious monetary need. Fundraising is important for a variety of other reasons as well. For example, it allows the children or other recipients of the funds (or what they purchase) to feel some pride of ownership. In many cases, the beneficiaries of funds that are raised are able to feel not as if they have received ‘charity,’ but as if they have actually earned the item or experience that the funds have provided. What better way to help a person to feel empowered than to allow them to help raise the funds needed for a cause that will benefit them? With this said, many families shop online, and Congregation Beth Judea has been approved for ‘Amazon Smile’. A formal notification along with instructions on how to use this web site with the URL address will be sent to all congregants. This is a great way to do your holiday shopping in addition to the Chanukah Bazaar here at the synagogue.

SUPPORT BETH JUDEA BY PURCHASING GIFT CARDS

The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws. Historically, the Board of Directors of Congregation Beth Judea has sent shiva baskets to the immediate family of Board members; parents, spouses, siblings and G-d forbid, children. We would like to extend this gesture to the entire congregation.

Purchasing gift cards is one of the easiest ways to support Beth Judea. The Congregation earns a rebate from the vendors when you utilize the gift cards, so there is no cost to you. Gift cards can be utilized the same as cash, there are no restrictions. If you are shopping for groceries or clothes, going to a movie or traveling, you can help support our Congregation. Order forms for Gift Cards are available in the office or in the Lobby on Sunday morning. They can be purchased with cash, check, or credit cards (a 2.5% convenience fee will be added when paying with a credit card). Click Here to Download Form

Religious Education Our tradition understands the different ways that people connect to meaning. Many of our holidays have home rituals that include a special meal. Rosh Hashanah is just one of many chagim with numerous simanim (symbolic holiday foods) such as:

• Apples dipped in honey: a good and sweet New Year • Head of a fish: that we be the head and not the tail • Fish: that we be fruitful and multiply like fish Anna Besser Education Director

• Pomegranate: that our merits increase as the seeds of the pomegranate

Many of us grew up with the items above on our Rosh Hashanah table and continue to add new simanim each year. Here are a few additional simanim to consider:

• Kiwis and mangos to symbolize other wishes for the coming year • Carrots (gezer): that G-d’s decree (gezirah) on us only good decrees and bless us with a good year • Beets (selek): that our adversaries be removed (sileik) • Dates (tamar): that our enemies be consumed (tam) (http://www.behrmanhouse.com/download/file/fid/4053) Now it’s your turn. What will you add to your Rosh Hashanah table this year? I wish you and your family a Shanah Tova U’Metukah. OPENING DAY PROGRAM: Join us on Sunday, September 10th at 9 am for our Opening Day program. Meet the clergy, administration, and lay leadership of our school. It’s a great time to get a panorama of our entire program, ask questions, and meet other parents. This informal and educational conversation will help you get acquainted with school events (holiday & family programs, Consecration, etc.), school policies, overnighters for aleph-dalet students, and much more. Following this assembly, you’re invited to join your children’s classes to meet the teachers and hear about the curriculum and class expectations. JUNIOR CONGREGATION Shabbat is an important part of our school curriculum. We teach our students about the joys and beauty of Shabbat. We train them to become proficient members of our community. In an effort to coordinate what our students are learning in the classroom, we are starting Junior Congregation, which will begin on SHABBAT, SEPT 9TH. It is a Shabbat service run by kids for kids for ages 7 – 13 in the beit midrash. Children end the morning in the Robbins sanctuary, where they help lead Ein Keloheinu, Aleinu and Adon Olam on non-bar/bat mitzvah mornings. Children are invited to join Shabbat Kiddush following services. Junior Congregation services begin at 10:30 am o Will count towards 4 Shabbat services for Aleph & Bet o Will count towards 3 Shabbat services for Gimel, Dalet & Heh

Religious Education CBJ Religious School receives a $9,000 Grant Congregation Beth Judea’s Religious School is one of the recipients of the Best Practices in Jewish Education grants from the Community Foundation for Jewish Education. CBJ was awarded a $9,000 grant for this upcoming year. The Best Practice grant is to help congregation education programs build on what they already are doing well. CBJ’s Religious School will be using the grant money to implement a new Judaic curriculum (ShalomLearning) and expand technology in the classrooms. ShalomLearning partners with synagogues all over the world to provide a fresh approach to Jewish education by using technology and making the curriculum and materials relevant to the students. ShalomLearning’s interactive, Jewish valuesbased curriculum helps children develop a positive Jewish identity. It is built on the principle of creating relevancy between a student’s secular life and Jewish tradition. By using a Jewish values-based curriculum, students acquire important tools and learning skills that provide them with the ability to find relevancy in their life experience today. Rather than being a linear, content focused curriculum, ShalomLearning has a modern, integrated, and holistic approach that is appealing to 21st century learners. The curriculum is based on seven Jewish values we all share, like Gevurah “Using your inner strength to do what’s right,” and Teshuvah “Taking responsibilities for your actions.” Throughout each value unit, Torah stories, Jewish history, Israel, holidays, and more are weaved and integrated so that each student explores his or her personal connection to our heritage.

The final swims are happening in swimming pools across the Chicagoland area. Theme parks are getting ready to close down, school is in full session, and vacation plans already begin for next year’s summer. All of this at the same time as the High Holidays rolling around again in the Jewish calendar. It is interesting to think about the parallels between the end of summer and the Jewish High Holidays. We often refer to the word teshuvah when referencing the idea of making amends or asking for forgiveness during the time of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. If we look at the literal translation for teshuva, however, it means return. This is a time of year for return. Yes, of course, we return in the sense of asking for forgiveness and trying to return goodness in ways that we have wronged people, but we return during this time of year in a number of other ways. This is the time of the year, for many people, that they return to a normal routine. Kids go back to school; families return from vacation; the synagogue returns back to yearround setup. It is my hope that as we “return” from each of these things that we also find time to return to something new to try. Over the past month, we lost our dear friend and cantorial soloist Ben Saypol. Remembering how short life can be reminds us that each year we should try to return in many ways beyond just forgiveness. We should return to new things, we should return to make old things better, we should return to old friends, and return to new friends. Take a few minutes this holiday season and return to something new for you. Perhaps a new hobby, perhaps that book you always wanted to write, perhaps try out a youth, Men’s Club, or Sisterhood program. Whatever it is, take advantage of our annual time to reset our lives and return to something brand new! Wishing each and every one of you a safe and meaningful fast, and may you all be sealed in the book of life! Shana Tovah and G’mar Chatimah Tovah! Men’s Club Ladies and Gentlemen of Beth Judea, The official last day of summer this year is September 22nd, but for me it’s Sept.16 when Selichot occurs. The summer seemed to fly by, and now it’s time to look forward to the High Holidays. This Sept. 15th is a Shirat Sabbat that will feature musical instruments and some different tunes to our service. On Sept. 24th, we are going to erect the Beth Judea sukkah. There has been a great deal of planning and work done to get this accomplished. Our very own Sandy Victor has directed the crew of busy volunteers in totally reconstructing all the wall panels. In a succession of 3 Sundays we, the crew, consisting of Sandy Victor, Alan Marcus, Norm Kurtz, Evan Rumack, Steve Limer, Bruce Hoffman, Zach Pesin, and me, have worked very hard to make sure we as a congregation can observe and celebrate this ancient holiday.

I would also like to announce that our Men’s Club Softball Team has won first place in the league again this year. That makes three times in the past four years! We are very proud of our teams. As the end of the month of September, is Yom Kippur, I would like to implore any person I have wronged to find in your heart forgiveness, and I wish you all a joyous and healthy New Year, and meaningful holiday. Safe travels, and I’ll see you in Shul. Jerry Sakol Men’s Club President

Tzedakah Fund The Men's Club has made donations from the minyan tzedakah box to: Chai Lifeline

At the Men’s Club Convention in July, we received a Bronze Torch Award for a mitzvah performed by three congregants and many unnamed individuals. I would like to honor three men who have brought great honor to our synagogue. Evan Rumack, Norm Kurtz, and Orin Rotman brought several sets of tefillin to the Ramah Wisconsin Hebrew day camp after a distress call came to us that the campers had none and was there something we could do? These three men drove to the camp, showed them how to wrap themselves in tefillin that were donated by the Midwest Region of the FJMC, Beth Judea Men’s Club, FJMC, and anonymous donors, and came home- all in 24 hours. This action that they took is part of a prayer that we say every day. Let these matters that I command you this day, be upon your heart. Teach them diligently to your children at home and away… bind them as a sing upon your arm and a frontlet between your eyes (Deut: 6: 5-9). These men are, to me, what Judaism is all about, and great examples of how we are to conduct ourselves. I for one am proud of my association with them as a member of the Men’s Club and CBJ.

The Word - September 2017

Keshet Maot Chitim We thank all those who have contributed to the tzedakah fund administered by Men's Club.

Men’s Club strives to offer something for everyone. As such, we’re always open to new and creative programming ideas that help Jewish men lead rich and filling Jewish Lives.

Sisterhood Dear Sisters, Here we are in September and already off and running. First of all, a HUGE thank you to the fabulous Sandy Goldenberg and her rummage sale committee for a job well done. Also, thank you to all the wonderful volunteers! We couldn't have done it without you! We took in record amounts of merchandise and earned more than the original goal. Sandy knows how to motivate her committee to get the best possible results – and she comes through every time. The rummage sale is always our big kick-off fundraiser event and helps set us on the course for the coming year. Ladies, a job well done! Speaking of events, our annual Membership Dinner is fast approaching on Thursday, September 7th. The theme this year is “Let’s Wrap Up the Summer with our Picnic Dinner.” Leslie Peck, Membership Dinner Organizer Extraordinaire, and her enthusiastic committee have planned an evening of great food and fun featuring the Name That TV Theme Song Game. The cost? If you’re a current Paid-Up Sisterhood member, it’s FREE!! What? You say you didn’t join yet? Well then, wouldn’t THIS be the perfect time to join?! Of course!!

This year we’re bringing back something fun we haven’t done in a couple of years. On the first Wednesday of every month, come join us for a VERY informal get together at Panera Bread on Milwaukee and Deerfield at 7:00 pm. We’ll be getting together to schmooze, drink some tea or coffee (or whatever), and just enjoy each other. That’s it. Nothing fancy. Come and talk about your day, your kids, your grandkids, whatever. Trust me, you’ll enjoy yourself. The first Wednesday of September is the 6th. Remember, 7:00. However, if you get there at 7:15 or 7:30, no biggie! Just come! Rosh Hashanah is from Wednesday night, September 20th through Friday, September 22nd with Yom Kippur following from Friday night, September 29th through Saturday, September 30th. From our homes to yours, we wish you the sweetest of New Years. And may we all be inscribed in the Book of Life, Health, Happiness, and Prosperity. And may the whole world be inscribed in the Book of Peace – please. L’shana tovah, Rhonda Cohn and Heidi Sakol Sisterhood Co-Presidents
