Rabbi’s Reflections GETTING READY Because of the intricacies of the Hebrew calendar, . the High Holidays appear to be ‘late’ this year. While their Hebrew dates remain constant, an October beginning can leave us feeling a bit adrift. But this extra month gives us an opportunity to better prepare ourselves for these awe-filled days, to pay attention in ways that we might not otherwise. Here are some tips for making these Days of
Prepare the home by cleaning, clearing away unused objects and papers, making the physical space we inhabit as clear of clutter as the lives we hope to lead in the year to come. Buy new clothes for the holidays to show how much respect we hold for them and the God who commands us to observe them.
Awe as meaningful as they can be: Start the year off right by taking part in the communal welcome of the Sefer Haftarah on September 18. We will sing, dance, and eat in celebration of this wonderful new addition to our sanctuary service, as we fill in final letters of the scroll. If you have not yet sponsored a word, verse, or entire section of the haftarah scroll and wish to, contact me immediately. Enroll in one of our fall Adult Education courses. Hazzan and I are team teaching a four-part course on the themes and music of the High Holidays. Join us to learn the melodies and theologies that make these days such a highlight of the Jewish year. Engage in daily prayer prior to the holidays, especially in morning minyan in the weeks leading into Rosh HaShanah, where we first hear the shofar blown. You need morning minyan, and minyan needs you!
Talk. Speak to family members and friends about hopes for the year to come, and begin the process of apology that marks this season. It is only by wiping the slate of the past year clean that we can begin again, newly aware of our own frailties and vigilant about not repeating the mistakes of the past. In all these ways, we can make these High Holidays more than an exercise in showing up. I also encourage our members to arrive as early as possible each of these days; it is a shame to miss the morning service, or even the Torah service, which are the heart of these days’ experience. I look forward to seeing all of you during September as we prepare for another year of learning, of celebration, and of building new and deeper relationships with one another.

President’s Message Last year in my September Word article, I discussed the Parsha Vayyakhel. This parsha describes God commanding the Jewish people to build the Tabernacle. Moses asks each person to contribute everything needed for the Tabernacle. Every person was to become involved in the work of building the Tabernacle. The people were so inspired that Moses needed to call a moratorium on their giving.

B’nei Mitzvah Bios Alexa Brea Feldman, daughter of Rebecca and Lawrence Feldman will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on September 10, 2016. Sharing in her happiness are maternal great grandmother, Bubbie Golda Indig (from Florida), grandparents Hedi Indig Bednarz (from Florida), Ed Morgan (from Ohio), and Marian and Earl Feldman (from Michigan). Alexa is an 8th grader at Aptakisic Junior High where she participates in cheerleading and leadership club. Outside of school, she loves dance with her friends and plays soccer. At home, she enjoys spending time with her family, including sister Mara, pets Marshmallow and Stanley, and her beloved iPhone. Alexa has spent the last 5 summers at Camp Chi in Lake Delton, Wisconsin with her camp friends and considers that her “second home.” She also worked with 4-year olds this past summer as a Counselor-in-Training at the JCYS Summer Camp. For her mitzvah project, she collected her weight in newspapers to donate to the Orphans of the Storm Animal Shelter, a close place to her heart and where she adopted both her cat and dog. Alexa also collected and donated blankets, towels, crates, and other necessary items to help other animals in need. Alexa began her religious education in Michigan and has continued on her path to today’s bat mitzvah. She is so very grateful to be surrounded on her special day by family and friends from near and far. Her parents are so very proud of her on this major accomplishment. The Feldman Family would like to offer special thanks to her tutor Kim, Rabbi Pivo, and Hazzan Weisberg for their patience and supporting her on this special day.
The Word - September 2016
Amelia Elle Tehrani, an eighth grader at Hawthorn Middle School North in Vernon Hills, will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on September 17, 2016. Since she was 4 years old, Amelia has always loved to dance. In fact, she will receive her 10-year-anniversary dance award from Encore Dance Studio in Vernon Hills next May. She has participated in competitions in Schaumburg and has even performed at Six Flags Great America. She has performed many types of dances from hiphop to ballet to jazz and tap. Besides dance, Amelia loves to play softball. The lefty slugger likes playing second base best. For her mitzvah project, Amelia is leading a team to raise money and walk in the annual Light the Night walk for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in October in Glenview. She will also donate a percentage of her Bat Mitzvah gifts to the nonprofit organization. She is excited to announce that her Grandmother, Sharon, has been cancer-free from leukemia for two years this September. Amelia would like to thank all of the people who helped her prepare for her Bat Mitzvah her parents and family, her Hebrew school and Sunday school teachers, her tutor Andrea Dickson, Rabbi Pivo, and Cantor Weisberg.
A Hearty Mazel Tov to all our September B’nei Mitzvah
from the Beth Judea Family.

Youth
WHAT’S UP IN THE WORLD OF OUR YOUTH??? HIGH HOLIDAYS!!! Really...already!!! That’s right friends... In just a few short days, we will be starting the High Holidays. This is typically the time of year that people reflect back on the previous 11 ½months to judge themselves on what went well and what did not. Many people will typically look to make amends for previous wrongdoings or even send out the blanket “I’m sorry for anything I have done to hurt you this year” statement to friends and family. Does this really make sense though? On the one hand, the mere fact that someone is taking the time to reflect back and trying to right wrongs inherently is a good thing. While in the past I have been quick to write off those blanket apology statements, as I have thought more about it, I have recognized that it is a great first step. The simple fact is, a person is recognizing that he/she is human and has made mistakes and is clearly still thinking about those mistakes enough that he/she is trying to make amends even months later. This altogether is a good thing.
On the other hand, does an apology really mean anything if it is done in the face of judgment long after the fact? To this I would say: forget about the apology and instead look to right the wrong or alter future relationships. While mistakes will always happen, as to err is human, it is what we do afterwards that really defines us. This does not have to wait for a special “holy” time of year to do though. We can make amends and continue to grow throughout the year. Working with teens, I see relationships build and tear down between two people all the time (sometimes in just one day). The best is when I see two people figure out that there will always be the challenges to any sort of relationship and fight through them to learn from the challenge and from each other. We work at BJUSY to constantly learn from our mistakes to try to improve the program as well as improve ourselves as individuals for the future. We hope to make this year just a bit better than last and promise that we will still make plenty of mistakes along the way. We would like to preemptively apologize for those mistakes and ask that you call us out on them so we can improve for the future and make amends right then in the moment. Please enjoy the message below written by our 2016-2017 BJUSY President Paige Reinstein. We look forward to seeing you at events throughout the year. Make sure to also be on the lookout for our upcoming open house date for parents to come by and learn about all the fun ways to get their kids involved. Date TBA soon! Youth Message from BJUSY President, Paige Reinstein: I walked timidly into the synagogue doubting whether I would ever truly enjoy a youth group. I walked out that same night leaving a utopia-like community. I finally met people like me and was welcomed into the tribe! I saw passion in the purest form, from singing ruach songs on the bus ride to talking about the upcoming charity carnival. I was able to gain confidence and skills which helped make high school the best years so far! These are just some of the reasons I am excited to give back to such a great community during my last year of high school. My name is Paige Reinstein; I am honored and excited to be the BJUSY president during the 2016-2017 school year and hope to help many more teens embrace the purple elephants! My board has been working very hard and is super excited for this upcoming year. We hope to have programs for people of every interest! Some of my favorites include a political “party,” a Broadway themed Shabbat program, Eilat beach party, and Iron Chef competition. We also have a basketball team, community service events, and leadership opportunities. I encourage everyone to try BJUSY and see for themselves the amazing community that continues to inspire me through whichever mode they feel most comfortable. If you have any ideas, suggestions, or questions, I would love to hear from you! Please email BJUSYPRESIDENT@gmail.com, call 847-634-0777, and communicate with us through popular social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram.

ADULT EDUCATION Welcome to our Adult Education Series. To register for classes or to find out more information, please contact Anna Besser at abesser@bethjudea.org.
Adult Education Series September 2016 Torah Reading
Taught by Hazzan Weisberg How and why did our cantillation system come about? Once you learn the different signs, their sounds and how they structure each sentence of Torah, you will be able to chant the text with accuracy and conviction. This is a wonderful and useful skill and can be a meaningful way to participate in synagogue life. You should be able to read Hebrew with some fluency, and carry a tune; you will NOT need to read music. COST: textbook $25; an iPad or smartphone is recommended Tuesday Evenings; 6:15 – 7:15 pm Sept. 6, 2016 – March 21, 2017 (No classes in Oct., Nov. 22, Dec.13, 27, Jan. 3)
As the Jewish New year arrives, we pray and hope for good fortune. We are expected to be compassionate; to forgive and forget. But can one really be expected to just let go all the time. Let’s explore these and other topics as we prepare ourselves for this new year.
Monday, September 12
8:00 pm
YOM KIPPUR: THE MEANING OF FASTING Rabbi Pivo All Jewish holidays include distinctive food, but twice a year, on Yom Kippur and Tisha b’Av, Jews refrain from eating at all, fasting for a full day. There are also a number of minor (sunup to sundown) fasts on the Jewish calendar. As part of our year-long study of Jewish eating customs, we will explore the role of fasting in Jewish religious practice.
Monday, September 19
8:00 pm
COMPARATIVE LITURGY Hazzan Weisberg Let’s look at the prayers and service structure of our Weekday and Shabbat services in relation to those of the Yamim Nora’im. Much of the High Holiday service is simply built around our normal daily prayers. We still have the Amidah, but there are some important differences! What exactly is Selihot, Vidui, Neilah? Why the extra "le-eila" in the Kaddish, why repeat Kol Nidre three times? Bring your machzor and let's learn what's going on.

Sisterhood “Your life and mine should be valued not by what we take…but by what we give.” Edgar Allen, Founder of Easter Seals We each volunteer for a variety of reasons….to make friends in a new community, to learn something new, to participate in a book club, or to enjoy the camaraderie of working with other liked minded women…. yet, the bottom line is that we are all giving back. Yes, we are taking something away, be it making new friends or learning a new skill, but as I like to say, “I am involved because I want to give back, to my sisterhood, my region, and the Jewish world at large.” For the most part, we are very fortunate − we have clothes to wear, shoes for our feet, and kitchen cabinets filled with food, and because of this we volunteer to help make our communities and the world a better place to be. This is the time of year that our sisterhood is looking out towards the new year and making plans. We are immersed in the details of finding a venue, thinking about an interesting program, or finding a team to work on it. And in all of these preparations, we are so focused on the details that we sometimes forget about the time that we spend on these details…that we are giving back….to create a warm, welcoming environment so that others can join us and give back. Working together helps us to grow and to develop new friendships. If you’d like to join sisterhood, please contact Debbie Limer at debs825@datamanagersinc.com. We would love to have you. Thank you for giving to the women of Beth Judea so that together all our voices are heard.

Men’s Club Ladies and Gentlemen of Beth Judea: over 50 years ago I was in little league. To make things fair to all the players, there were three levels of competency ratings. The very good, the average, and the artistic types. I was an artistic type. I missed a few practices and games due to the fact that I had very little interest in the game. If my mother didn’t remind me that we had a practice, or a game, I usually didn’t bring it up either. The thing that I remember most about little league, was the coach. As you may have surmised, his son was on our team. I can’t recall his son’s name, but his love of or lack thereof was on a par with my own. When we were playing a game, although I was out on the field, my mind was not. Our coach, realizing he had a field filled with day dreamers would occasionally call out to us, “Is anybody out there?” This was our cue to show we were still in the game and lend support to the infield. “Hey batter ho batter, hey batter etc. you get the idea. The joke among the contributors of this publication is nobody reads the Word. Well I do. And I know I’m not alone. I’m calling out to all of the members of Beth Judea. Is
anybody out there? One of the activities that is part of Men’s Club is Hearing Men’s Voices. Every one of us has at least one story. Attending one of these events will give voice to who you are and perhaps a person who has something of value to offer. These and other upcoming events will be
announced in The Word. This coming Sunday, Sept. 4th, we are going to meet after minyan around 10:00 AM to help rebuild the parts of our Sukkah that have become unusable. Sandy Victor and I will be there with materials and tools. The actual Sukkah building will take place Oct. 9th. Sept. 18th we are dedicating our new Sefer Haftarah at 12:00 noon. This promises to be a very spiritually uplifting and joyous occasion. Sept. 24th is a Saturday that Our Men’s Club volunteers to help at Lieberman Center where we assist the residences there with a Shabbat service. Contact me at Fivepie@aol.com if you are interested in participating in this embracing mitzvah. Sept. 24th at 9:00 PM is Selichot when we welcome in the High Holidays. Yours truly will be among the members of the Choir singing that night. I am hoping by this time we can look forward to more temperate weather, as this has been a particularly hot and sticky summer. Good health and safe travels to all.
